Cover Story: Metallic layers that are deposited on hot semiconductor surfaces can turn into nanometer-sized droplets. These droplets drill tiny holes in the semiconductor by etching. When these holes are filled, quantum dots are created, which are excellent quantum light emitters. In the study, the authors investigate the threshold of droplet formation and its dependencies. Critically, the density and shape of the holes change drastically around this threshold. This has a decisive influence on the optical properties of the quantum light emitters. View this paper
