Cover Story: The assessment of speech perception during clinical interventions for hearing loss is key to rehabilitation. This article introduces a new speech test for the English language, the Chear open-set performance test (COPT), which can be used to assess speech recognition as part of the validation of hearing aid fittings or cochlear implant programming. The test uses a carrier phrase to allow time for the processing parameters of the device to reach stability before the presentation of the keyword. Phoneme and word scores are obtained. No practice effects are apparent, and critical differences are specified. The COPT can provide results that are easy to interpret quickly, which is essential in clinical settings. View this paper
