Cover Story: Treating pulmonary infections by inhalation of drug-containing particles is highly promising as a strategy to directly deliver drugs to the site of action (lungs), thus reducing side effects. However, the particles should have sufficient loads, suitable release kinetics and a size no larger than 5 microns, if bronchioles and/or alveoli are targeted. In this work, an atomization process has been used to obtain alginate microparticles within the desired size range, followed by a drying process using progressive solvent exchange, and finally antibiotic (colistin sulfate) loading. Antibiotic crystals were formed on the surface of alginate microparticles, promoting a fast release that is desirable for inhaled therapeutics. The drug content was higher than 8% and its bactericidal activity was preserved after loading. View this paper
