Rising global electricity demand and the expansion of distribution networks require a critical assessment of component-level greenhouse gas contributions. Distribution transformers, although indispensable, have significant life-cycle carbon impacts due to the use of materials, manufacturing, and in-service losses. This study conducts a life-cycle assessment of a single-phase, 75 kVA oil-immersed distribution transformer manufactured in Newfoundland, one of the provinces with the cleanest, hydro-dominated grids in Canada, and evaluates it over a 40-year lifespan. Using a cradle-to-use boundary, the analysis quantifies embodied emissions from raw material extraction, manufacturing, and transportation, alongside operational emissions derived from empirically measured no-load and load losses. All the data are collected directly during the manufacturing process, ensuring high analytical fidelity. The energy efficiency of the transformer is analyzed in MATLAB version R2023b using measured no-load and load losses to generate efficiency, load characteristics under various operating conditions. Under varying load factor scenarios and based on Newfoundland’s 2025 grid intensity of 18 g CO2e/kWh, the lifetime operational emissions are estimated to range from 0.19 t CO2e under no-load operation to 4.4 t CO2e under full-load conditions. A linear regression-based decarbonization model using Microsoft Excel projects grid intensity to reach net-zero around 2037, two years beyond the provincial target, indicating that post-2037 transformer losses will remain energetically relevant but carbon-neutral. Sensitivity analysis reveals that temporary overloading can substantially elevate lifetime emissions, emphasizing the value of smart-grid-enabled load management and optimal transformer sizing. Comparative assessment with fossil fuel-intensive provinces across Canada demonstrates the dominant influence of grid generation mix on life-cycle emissions. Additionally, refurbishment scenarios indicate up to 50% reduction in cradle-to-gate emissions through material reuse and oil reclamation. The findings establish a scalable framework for integrating grid decarbonization trajectories, life-cycle carbon modelling, and circular-economy strategies into sustainable distribution network planning and transformer asset management. The rise in electric vehicles (EVs) with lithium-ion batteries supports net-zero goals, but the increasing demand will inevitably generate more battery waste. Current pack designs often rely on permanent joining techniques, which hinder disassembly and thereby limit serviceability, reuse and recycling. A critical challenge is the removal of the battery lid, typically bonded to the pack frame with sealant adhesives. In the absence of design for disassembly requirements for OEMs, this study investigates a novel debonding strategy focused on the lid-to-frame bonding. A silane-based adhesive commonly used in battery packs is first characterised under tensile, shear and mode I conditions to establish the baseline performance in the range of flexible adhesive properties. Herein, a heat-activated primer is introduced as a debondable interfacial layer between the adhesive and the substrate. Upon activation at 150 C, the primer significantly reduces adhesion, around 98% of the initial joint strength, enabling room temperature debonding. The primer demonstrates strong compatibility with epoxy and polyurethane adhesives, but its performance with silane-based systems still needs to be improved in terms of the primer’s compatibility with silane-based adhesives. Finally, a small-scale testing apparatus is developed to evaluate primer effectiveness in the disassembly of battery lids. This approach represents a promising step toward more serviceable, recyclable and sustainable battery systems. Full article

Aeroponics has emerged as a key technology for sustainable and resource-efficient food production, particularly under intensifying constraints on water availability, land use, and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. This review synthesizes recent advances in water–energy–nutrient integration, highlighting operational parameters—humidity (50–80%), temperature (18–25 °C), nutrient solution pH (5.5–6.5), and electrical conductivity (1.5–2.5 mS cm−1)—that critically influence system performance. Evidence indicates that closed-loop water recirculation and AI-assisted monitoring for environmental control and nutrient dosing can stabilize system dynamics and reduce water consumption by more than 90%. Reported yield improvements ranged from 45% to 75% compared with conventional soil-based cultivation. Moreover, systems powered by renewable energy demonstrated up to an 80% reduction in GHG emissions. Life-cycle assessment studies further suggest that aeroponics, coupled with low-carbon electricity in controlled-environment agriculture (CEA), can outperform traditional agricultural supply chains in climate and resource efficiency metrics. Additional technological innovations—including multi-tier vertical rack architectures, optimized misting intervals, and micronutrient-enriched fertigation formulations containing N, P, Ca, Mg, and K—were found to enhance spatial productivity and crop quality. Overall, aeroponics represents a promising pathway toward net-zero, high-performance agricultural systems. Full article

Microbial fuel cells (MFCs) utilizing livestock wastewater represent a critical path toward sustainable energy and net-zero emissions. To maximize this potential, this study investigates a novel circuit configuration, integrating twin MFCs with dual supercapacitors in a closed-loop system, to enhance charge storage and electricity generation. By utilizing molasses-seawater anolytes, the study establishes a performance benchmark for optimizing energy recovery in future livestock wastewater treatment applications. The self-adjusting potential difference between interconnected MFCs is verified, and supercapacitors significantly improve energy harvesting by reducing load impedance and balancing capacitor plate charges. Voltage gain across supercapacitors exceeds that of single MFC charging, demonstrating the benefits of series integration. Experimental results reveal that catholyte properties—electrical conductivity, salinity, pH, and dissolved oxygen—strongly influence MFC performance. Optimal conditions for a neutralized anolyte (pH 7.12) include dissolved oxygen levels of 5.37–5.68 mg/L and conductivity of 24.3 mS/cm. Under these conditions, supercapacitors charged with sterile diluted seawater catholyte store up to 40% more energy than individual MFCs, attributed to increased output current. While the charge balance mechanism of supercapacitors contributes to storage efficiency, its impact is less pronounced than that of conductivity and oxygen solubility. The interplay between electrochemical activation and charge balancing enhances overall electricity harvesting. These findings provide valuable insights into optimizing MFC-supercapacitor systems for renewable energy applications, particularly in livestock wastewater treatment. Full article

Existing office buildings in Australia contribute to 24% of the nation’s electricity consumption and 10% of greenhouse gas emissions, with energy use projected to rise by 84%. Meeting the 2050 sustainability target and United Nations (UN) 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) requires improving sustainability within existing office buildings. This systematic review examines net zero energy and climate resilience strategies in these buildings by analysing 74 studies from scholarly literature, government reports, and industry publications. The literature search was conducted across Scopus, Google Scholar, and Web of Science databases, with the final search in early 2025. Studies were selected based on keywords and research parameters. A narrative synthesis identified key technologies, evaluating the integration of net zero principles with climate resilience to enhance energy efficiency through HVAC modifications. Technologies like heat pumps, energy recovery ventilators, thermal energy storage, and phase change materials (PCMs) have been identified as crucial in reducing HVAC energy usage intensity (EUI). Lighting control and plug load management advancements are examined for reducing electricity demand. This review highlights the gap between academic research and practical applications, emphasising the need for comprehensive field studies to provide long-term performance data. Current regulatory frameworks influencing the net zero transition are discussed, with recommendations for policy actions and future research. This study links net zero performance with climate adaptation objectives for existing office buildings and provides recommendations for future research, retrofit planning, and policy development. The accelerating global transition to electric mobility demands data-driven infrastructure planning that balances technical, economic, and spatial considerations. This study develops a scenario-based demand and economic modeling framework to estimate electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure needs across Abu Dhabi’s urban and rural regions through 2050. Two adoption pathways, Progressive and Thriving, were constructed to capture contrasting policy and technological trajectories consistent with the UAE’s Net Zero 2050 targets. The model integrates regional travel behavior, energy consumption (0.23–0.26 kWh/km), and differentiated charging patterns to project EV penetration, charging demand, and economic feasibility. Results indicate that EV stocks may reach 750,000 (Progressive) and 1.1 million (Thriving) by 2050. The Thriving scenario, while demanding greater capital investment (≈108 million AED), yields higher utilization, improved spatial equity (Gini = 0.27), and stronger long-term returns compared to the Progressive case. Only 17.6% of communities currently meet infrastructure readiness thresholds, emphasizing the need for coordinated grid expansion and equitable deployment strategies. Findings provide a quantitative basis for balancing economic efficiency, spatial equity, and policy ambition in the design of sustainable EV charging networks for emerging low-carbon cities. To identify the emission reduction potential and policy synergies of Tokyo’s road passenger and urban road freight transport under the “carbon neutrality target,” this paper constructs an assessment framework for megacities. First, based on macroeconomic socioeconomic variables (population, GDP, road length, and employment), regression equations are used to predict traffic turnover for different modes of transport from 2021 to 2050. Then, the prediction results are imported into the LEAP (Long-range Energy Alternatives Planning) model. By adjusting three policy levers—vehicle technology substitution (ZEV: EV/FCEV), energy intensity improvement, and upstream electricity and hydrogen supply decarbonization—a “single-factor vs. multi-factor (policy synergy)” scenario matrix is designed for comparison. The results show that the emission reduction potential of a single measure is limited; upstream decarbonization yields the greatest independent emission reduction effect, while the emission reduction effect of deploying zero-emission vehicles and improving energy efficiency alone is small. In the most ambitious composite scenario, emissions will decrease by approximately 83% by 2050 compared to the baseline scenario, with cumulative emissions decreasing by over 35%. Emissions from rail and taxis will approach zero, while buses and freight will remain the primary residual sources. This indicates that achieving net zero emissions in the transportation sector requires not only accelerated ZEV penetration but also the simultaneous decarbonization of electricity and hydrogen, as well as policy timing design oriented towards fleet replacement cycles. The integrated modeling and scenario analysis presented in this paper provide quantifiable evidence for the formulation of a medium- to long-term emissions reduction roadmap and the optimization of policy mix in Tokyo’s transportation sector. Nowadays, the automotive industry is primarily driven by the CO2 policy that targets net zero carbon emissions by 2035 from passenger cars and commercial vehicles. The main path to achieve this goal is the implementation of electric powertrains with the energy stored in batteries, as the case for battery electric vehicles (BEV). However, this technology still faces some difficulties in terms of energy density, overall weight, charging time, and vehicle autonomy. From the other point of view, fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEV) offer the same advantages as BEV in terms of CO2 reduction, providing better autonomy and lower refueling time. The energy demand by the electric powertrain strongly depends on the vehicle driving conditions as it directly affects energy consumption. In that context, the article aims to study the electrical energy demand of an ultra-energy efficient vehicle intended for a Shell eco-marathon competition in order to minimize hydrogen consumption. The study was carried out over a single lap on the racing track in Nogaro, France while applying the race rules from the competition in 2023. It includes a numerical evaluation of the vehicle resistance forces in different driving strategies and experimental validation on the propulsion test bench. Full article

The Turkish steel industry aims to reduce its sectoral carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions by 55% by 2030, in line with Türkiye’s Paris Agreement commitments and the European Green Deal (EGD), and consistent with the ambition of the European Union’s economy-wide ‘Fit for 55’ emissions-reduction target. Türkiye faces significant challenges in achieving net-zero greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, particularly as a developing country confronting the impacts of climate change and in the market situation, such as the effects of the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict, limited access to affordable raw materials, and rising operational costs. This study serves as a guideline for the Turkish steel sector’s roadmap towards modernization and eventual compliance with net-zero targets. The consideration and integration of new technologies planned for the Turkish steel industry, in both electric arc furnace (EAF) and blast furnace-basic oxygen furnace (BF-BOF) facilities, have been outlined in conjunction with green hydrogen and with Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) technologies. Four different scenarios were analysed to understand the reduction in CO2 emissions: (1) In a Business-As-Usual (BAU) scenario without any reduction, (2) 39.9% CO2 emission reduction with the Moderate scenario, (3) 59.6% reduction with the Advanced scenario, and (4) 82.9% reduction in CO2 emissions from the Turkish steel sector with the Net-Zero scenario. To quantify the uncertainty in these long-term projections, a Monte Carlo simulation was conducted, generating probabilistic confidence intervals that reinforce the robustness and credibility of the net-zero pathway. The official roadmap for the sector is not available as of today; however, an in-depth discussion with a policy innovation leading to it is the objective of this study. Full article

The rise in energy demand of Electric Vehicles (EVs) is an increasing burden on the grid. Solutions proposed to reduce grid load, for example, storing surplus energy from EVs, are costly and do not address associated challenges such as communication reliability and the optimum number of charging stations. This paper proposes an optimized energy management by availing supply from EVs and renewable resources for achieving net zero. We consider that EVs sell their surplus energy via bidirectional Vehicle-to-Grid exchange. Demand and supply from EVs and energy output from renewables are intelligently predicted and shared with the grid through a 5G communication network. A cost minimization solution alters grid supply according to available EV supply. This paper analyzes the upper bounds of EV demand and supply, utilizes game theory to incentivize EVs, and discusses the optimum number of charging stations. Results show that the proposed solution reduces 38.21% of the grid load and 5.3% cost. Full article

This study investigates the environmental and economic dynamics of sustainable aviation through the perspectives of senior executives in Türkiye’s civil aviation sector. As global aviation continues to face increasing pressure to decarbonize, understanding how industry leaders perceive and respond to carbon emission challenges is critical. The research employs a qualitative methodology based on semi-structured interviews with ten executives across airlines, airports, and aviation authorities. Using Python-based data mining techniques and thematic analysis, three core themes emerged: (1) sustainable aviation experience and economic dimensions; (2) carbon emissions reduction and efficient aviation systems; (3) sustainable energy and alternative fuel technologies. Findings reveal that while environmental sustainability is a growing concern, operational costs, technological constraints, and regulatory uncertainties significantly influence implementation. Stakeholders emphasized the importance of coordinated action among governments, industry, and international organizations, especially in scaling Sustainable Aviation Fuels (SAFs) and enhancing infrastructure for electric and hydrogen-powered aircraft. The study concludes that achieving net-zero aviation by 2050 requires an integrated approach that balances technological innovation, policy incentives, and stakeholder engagement. This multidimensional insight contributes to the ongoing discourse on low-carbon transition strategies in aviation, offering policy-relevant implications for developing countries. Full article

Electric vehicles are becoming more commonplace as we shift towards cleaner transportation. However, current charging infrastructure is immature, especially in remote and off-grid regions, making electric vehicle adoption challenging. This study presents an architecture for a standalone renewable energy-based electric vehicle charging station. The proposed renewable energy system comprises wind turbines, solar photovoltaic panels, fuel cells, and a hydrogen tank. As an energy storage system, second-life electric vehicle batteries are considered. This study investigates the feasibility and performance of the charging station with respect to two vastly different Canadian regions, Windsor, Ontario (urban), and Eagle Plains, Yukon (remote). In modeling these two regions using HOMER Pro software, this study concludes that due to its higher renewable energy availability, Windsor shows a net-present cost of $2.80 million and cost of energy of $0.201/kWh as compared to the severe climate of Eagle Plains, with a net-present cost of $3.61 million and cost of energy of $0.259/kWh. In both cases, we see zero emissions in off-grid configurations. A sensitivity analysis shows that system performance can be improved by increasing wind turbine hub heights and solar photovoltaic panel lifespans. With Canada’s goal of transitioning towards 100% zero-emission vehicle sales by 2035, this study provides practical insights regarding site-specific resource optimization for electric vehicle infrastructure that does not rely on grid energy. Furthermore, this study highlights a means to progress the sustainable development goals, namely goals 7, 9, and 13, through the development of more accessible electric vehicle charging stations. Recognizing human actions in low-light industrial environments remains a significant challenge for safety-critical applications in power systems. In this paper, we propose a Low-Light Pose-Action Collaborative Network (LPAC-Net), an integrated framework specifically designed for monitoring scenarios in underground electrical vaults and smart power stations. The pipeline begins with a modified Zero-DCE++ module for reference-free illumination correction, followed by pose extraction using YOLO-Pose and a novel rotation-invariant encoding of keypoints optimized for confined industrial spaces. Temporal dependencies are captured through a bidirectional LSTM network with attention mechanisms to model complex operational behaviors. We evaluate LPAC-Net on the newly curated ARID-Fall dataset, enhanced with industrial monitoring scenarios representative of electrical infrastructure environments. Experimental results demonstrate that our method outperforms state-of-the-art models, including DarkLight-R101, DTCM, FRAGNet, and URetinex-Net++, achieving 95.53% accuracy in recognizing worker activities and safety-critical events. Additional studies confirm LPAC-Net’s robustness under keypoint noise and motion blur, highlighting its practical value for intelligent monitoring in challenging industrial lighting conditions typical of underground electrical facilities and automated power stations. Despite growing interest in positive-energy and net-zero-energy buildings (NZEBs), few studies have addressed the integration of biobased construction with building-integrated photovoltaics (BIPV) under hot–dry climate conditions, particularly in Morocco and North Africa. This study fills this gap by presenting a simulation-based evaluation of energy performance and renewable energy integration strategies for a residential building in the Fes-Meknes region. Two structural configurations were compared using dynamic energy simulations in DesignBuilder/EnergyPlus, that is, a conventional concrete brick model and an eco-constructed alternative based on biobased wooden materials. Thus, the wooden construction reduced annual energy consumption by 33.3% and operational CO2 emissions by 50% due to enhanced thermal insulation and moisture-regulating properties. Then multiple configurations of the solar energy systems were analysed, and an optimal hybrid off-grid hybrid system combining rooftop photovoltaic, BIPV, and lithium-ion battery storage achieved a 100% renewable energy fraction with an annual output of 12,390 kWh. While the system incurs a higher net present cost of $45,708 USD, it ensures full grid independence, lowers the electricity cost to $0.70/kWh, and improves occupant comfort. The novelty of this work lies in its integrated approach, which combines biobased construction, lifecycle-informed energy modelling, and HOMER-optimised PV/BIPV systems tailored to a hot, dry climate. The study provides a replicable framework for designing NZEBs in Morocco and similar arid regions, supporting the low-carbon transition and informing policy, planning, and sustainable construction strategies. Open-winding permanent-magnet synchronous motors feature flexible control and a high fault-tolerance capability, making them widely used in high-reliability and high-power scenarios such as military equipment and electric locomotives. To address the issues that traditional model predictive control fails to balance, such as zero-sequence current suppression, system loss optimization and the reliance of weight parameter design on experience (with online optimization consuming excessive resources), this paper proposes an OW-PMSM MPC strategy for loss optimization and a weight design method based on a residual neural network. Specifically, the former strategy adds a zero-sequence current suppression term and a loss quantification term to the MPC cost function, enabling coordinated control of the two objectives; the latter establishes a mapping between weight parameters and motor performance via ResNet (which avoids the gradient vanishing problem in deep networks) and outputs optimal weight parameters offline to save online computing resources. Comparative experiments under two operating conditions show that the improved MPC strategy reduces system loss by 25%, while the ResNet-based weight design improves the performance of the drive system by 30%, fully verifying the effectiveness of the proposed methods.
