Background/Objectives: Perceived physical literacy (PPL) appears to be a relevant strategy for combating the prevalent sedentary lifestyle among young people. Therefore, understanding their PPL levels will facilitate the implementation of appropriate strategies for this purpose. Therefore, this study aimed to analyze the differences in PPL considering the sex dimension (i.e., males and females) and the age-group (i.e., early compulsory secondary education, late compulsory secondary education and baccalaureate). Methods: Seven-hundred-and-four Spanish students (age = 14.3 ± 1.6 years old) belonging to three different Spanish secondary schools voluntarily participated in this study. To assess adolescents’ perceptions of their physical literacy, the Spanish Adolescents’ Perceived Physical Literacy Assessment (S-PPLI) was used. This instrument consists of nine items equally distributed across three categories: self-perception and self-confidence, self-expression and communication with others, and knowledge and understanding. Results: Males obtained higher scores in all the indicators of PPL, except for items 1, 8 and 9, compared to their female counterparts (p < 0.05), while the oldest age-group reported higher scores in the indicators of knowledge and understanding category compared to students in the early years of compulsory secondary education (p < 0.01). Conclusions: Programs based on increasing the PPL should be implemented specifically for females. Also, similar programs must be included into scholar curriculums from the beginning of secondary education, with the aim of promoting improvements in the health and physical condition of Spanish adolescents. Background and Objectives: Anemia and stunting are major public health concerns for young Indonesian children. Limited information is available from studies on multi-micronutrient supplements in Indonesia. The objective of this study was to investigate the effect of 12-month multi-micronutrient powder (MNP) supplementation on serum hemoglobin levels, anemia, and growth. Methods: A randomized double-blinded placebo-controlled study was performed, including 232 eligible children aged 8–10 months old. Children with severe anemia or stunting/those classed as underweight were not included as subjects. The study was performed in a low-socioeconomic-status community in Jakarta. With an active-to-placebo ratio of 60:40, 139 subjects received MNP sachets twice/day, and 93 subjects received placebo sachets, mixed with complementary food. The outcome parameters were hemoglobin level, anemia, and growth indicators. Per-protocol analysis was performed for 179 (intervention: 110; control: 69) subjects. Results: There were no differences at baseline between the groups, except for the weight-for-length z-scores (WLZ). Upon intervention, the serum hemoglobin level and anemia proportion did not change significantly within the group, and no significant differences were found between the groups (p > 0.05). However, subgroup analysis of non-anemic children at baseline showed a significant increase in hemoglobin levels in the youngest age group (8.0–8.9 months old) receiving MNP compared to placebo (0.13 vs. −0.79, p = 0.031). Iron deficiency anemia proportion showed a similar upward trend upon intervention in both groups. No significant differences in growth were found between both groups. Conclusions: This study failed to find a significant effect of 12-month MNP supplementation on serum hemoglobin level, anemia, and growth. Full article

Background/Objectives: Biofeedback interventions are increasingly utilized in pediatric and adult care, with evidence in treating specific medical conditions and specific symptoms. However, evidence supporting their efficacy among children and adolescents and young adults (AYAs, aged 15–39) with cancer is limited. The aims of this systematic review are to present, assess, and synthesize the existing research on biofeedback in pediatric and AYA oncology, identify gaps in biofeedback research within this population, and provide recommendations for future research and clinical implications. Methods: A systematic search for articles was conducted using six bibliographic databases—PubMed/MEDLINE (NLM), EMBASE (Elsevier), CINAHL (EBSCO), SPORTDiscus (EBSCO), PsycINFO (OVID), and PEDro (NeuRA)—with an update on 5/7/2025. Included were studies involving pediatric/AYA oncology participants (0–39 years old) and those receiving at least one biofeedback modality. The methodological quality and risk of bias among included articles were assessed using the Cochrane Risk of Bias (ROB) Tool (modified version for non-randomized studies). A narrative synthesis of included studies examined the type of cancer studied, type of biofeedback used, study designs and methodological quality, and key outcomes evaluated. Results: While the literature suggests that biofeedback may offer beneficial outcomes for managing various pediatric/AYA oncology-related symptoms, such as pain, anxiety, and fatigue, only 8 studies out of 1013 screened (<1%) met inclusion criteria. Limitations included low study quality (small sample sizes, lack of control groups, and methodological inconsistencies). Conclusions: While biofeedback shows promise as a feasible and effective intervention, there is a call to action for well-designed, methodologically rigorous studies to substantiate its effectiveness and inform evidence-based practice specifically for pediatric/AYA oncology patients and clinicians. (1) Background: The provision of monofunctional or inadequately distributed services in urban park green spaces often constrains residents’ opportunities and diversity for outdoor activities, particularly limiting access and participation for specific age groups or activity preferences. However, functional nodes with temporal and spatial flexibility demonstrate high-quality characteristics of resilient and shared services through integrated development. Accurately identifying user demand provides a solid basis for optimizing the functional configuration of urban parks. (2) Methods: This study took the old city area of Zhengzhou, Henan Province, China, as a case study. By collecting and integrating various types of data, such as geographic spatial data, field investigation data, and behavioral observations, we developed a population demand quantification method and a modular analysis approach for park service functions. This framework enabled correlation analysis between diverse user needs and park services. The study further classified and combined park functions into modular units, quantifying their elastic and shared service capabilities—namely, the adaptive flexibility and shared utilization capacity of park services. Additionally, we established a demand-responsive evaluation system for identifying and diagnosing problem areas in park services based on multi-source data. (3) Results: The demand response index and diagnostic results indicate that the supply of fitness facilities—particularly equipment-based installations—is insufficient within the old urban district of Zhengzhou. Among the three user groups—children, young and middle-aged adults, and the elderly—the elderly population exhibited the lowest demand response index, revealing a significant gap in meeting their specific needs. (4) Conclusions: Based on the research findings, a three-tier optimization strategy is proposed: A. improve green space connectivity to expand the service coverage of parks; B. implement multifunctional overlay and coordinated integration in spatial design based on site characteristics and demand diagnostics; and C. increase the total supply of facilities to enhance spatial efficiency in parks. By integrating the demand assessment data and diagnostic results, this approach enabled a data-driven reorganization of service types and targeted allocation of resources within existing park infrastructure, offering a practical tool and reference for the planning of urban outdoor activity spaces. Many studies have focused on ageing and gut microbiota, but the correlation between gut microbiota and physical function in older adults, especially those with longevity, remains obscure and deserves further exploration. In this study we investigated changes in the gut microbiota and the association between gut microbiota and physical function in adults with longevity. This is a prospective observational study. Fifty-one older adults aged ≥ 60 years (including 27 participants aged 90 years and above) were enrolled. Information on clinical data, physical function including intrinsic capacity by Integrated Care for Older People (ICOPE) tool, and dietary habits of participants was collected and analysed. Gut microbiota structure and functional pathways were analysed by Metagenomics. Intrinsic capacity (measured as ICOPE scores) of adults’ longevity (aged 90–98, longe group) was significantly lower than older adults aged 60–89 years (CON group) (5.44 ± 2.15 vs. 6.71 ± 1.46, p = 0.017). Gut microbiota of the longe group is enriched in Akkermansia and Bifidobacterium, which may be beneficial to health. Gut microbiota was closely related to daily milk (including plain milk, flavoured milk with a content of cow’s milk or reconstituted milk of ≥80%, or reconstituted milk or fermented milk with a content of cow’s milk or milk powder of ≥80%) consumption, anxiety, and physical function including grip strength by the Short Physical Performance Battery (SPPB). Bacteroides plebeius and Bacteroides eggerthii were increased in long-living adults with better physical function. Escherichia coli was more abundant in frail young-old adults. Grip strength is positively correlated with the abundance of Roseburia hominis, Eubacterium rectale, Eubacterium eligens, and Roseburia intestinalis (p < 0.05). Pathways related to amino acid synthesis that include L-isoleucine, L-valine, and L-threonine were over-presented in long-living adults of better physical function. Adults with longevity showed comparable gut microbiota abundance to younger elderly individuals. The gut microbiota of long-living adults showed higher abundance of potentially beneficial bacteria, and the altered bacteria are closely associated with physical function. Changes in the gut microbiota may precede clinical indicators during the process of ageing. Gut microbiota may be a potential biomarker for longevity and healthy ageing. Nutrition and emotional state can be important influencing factors. Full article

Historical cross-sectional approaches examining cognitive aging consistently reveal a pattern of steady decline on nonverbal problem-solving, speeded tasks, and maintenance on verbal tasks. However, as measures developed and broadened the factor structure to align with Cattell–Horn–Carroll (CHC) theory, and age ranges were extended from 75 to 90 years, a more nuanced approach to cognitive aging emerged. The present study, using the Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale, Fifth Edition (WAIS-5), examined the cognitive aging process through a cross-sectional approach. WAIS-5 normative sample data (aligned with the 2022 U.S. census) were obtained from the test publisher. The sample included adult participants aged 20–24 through 85–90 (n = 1660), which were mapped into 11 age groups. Using post-stratification weighting to control for educational attainment, cognitive decline was observed throughout aging; verbal skills were maintained longer than other abilities, while processing speed declined steadily and rapidly from young adulthood to old age. Working memory was vulnerable to the aging process but demonstrated slower patterns of decline than the other vulnerable abilities. Fluid reasoning and visual spatial skills (although aligning with separate CHC broad abilities theoretically) were strikingly similar in their pattern of decline across a person’s lifespan. Results are highly consistent with the large body of cross-sectional research conducted during the previous generation by Salthouse and his colleagues, as well as other teams of researchers. Background: Periodontitis is a chronic inflammatory disease influenced by host aging, yet the specific effects of aging on disease susceptibility remain unclear. Objective: This study aimed to evaluate whether aging increases susceptibility to Porphyromonas gingivalis (P. gingivalis)-induced periodontitis in a murine model. We formulated the null hypothesis that age does not affect susceptibility to periodontal bone loss. Methods: Young (8 weeks) and aged (78 weeks) male C57BL/6 mice were randomly assigned into four groups: young control, young infected, old control, and old infected (n = 8 per group, except for old control, where n = 7). Experimental periodontitis was induced by oral application of P. gingivalis suspended in 5% carboxymethylcellulose (CMC), administered every other day, for a total of three applications. Alveolar bone loss was assessed 39 days after the last inoculation using histomorphometric measurement of buccal distance from the cemento-enamel junction to the alveolar bone crest (CEJ–ABC distance) and micro-computed tomography (μCT) at mesial and distal interdental sites. Bonferroni’s correction was applied to the Mann–Whitney U Test to determine statistical significance. A p-value of less than 0.05 was considered statistically significant. Results: Morphometric analysis showed significantly greater buccal bone loss in infected mice versus controls in both age groups (young: 0.193 mm vs. 0.100 mm, p < 0.01; old: 0.262 mm vs. 0.181 mm, p < 0.01). μCT analysis revealed that interdental bone loss was significant only in aged infected mice (mesial: 0.155 mm vs. 0.120 mm, p < 0.05; distal: 0.185 mm vs. 0.100 mm, p < 0.01), and not significant in young infected mice. Conclusions: Aging significantly exacerbates P. gingivalis-induced alveolar bone loss, particularly in interdental regions. These results allowed us to reject the null hypothesis. This study validates a clinically relevant murine model for analyzing age-related periodontitis and provides a foundation for investigating underlying molecular mechanisms and potential therapeutic interventions. Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) is the most prevalent acquired heart disease in cats and shares many clinical, phenotypical and pathological features with human HCM. Despite its relevance, knowledge on the pathomechanisms underlying the disease is limited. The present study aimed to characterize the molecular phenotypic changes in cardiomyocytes in feline HCM (fHCM) to better understand their contribution to the pathogenesis. To achieve this, the myocardium of the left ventricular free wall of 15 cats with confirmed fHCM and 30 control cats (two age groups: 16 cats 18-month-old, and 14 older adult cats without cardiac disease) were subjected to RT-qPCRs for markers representative of cardiomyocyte function. Overall, all markers were expressed at the highest level in young control cats, and increasing age correlated with decreased expression, regardless of sex. The comparison between the older adult control cats and those with HCM showed increased transcription levels for most markers associated with the disease, and higher expression of all markers in affected male cats compared to females. The constitutive transcription of all markers provides evidence of continuous myocardial adaptation throughout cats’ life. The high transcription values in the myocardium of young healthy cats and male cats affected by HCM suggest a particularly high myocardial responsiveness early in life and with HCM and reveal sex as relevant factor in the disease process. These results support the relevance of age and sex in the cardiac response to HCM in feline hearts. Full article

Background/Objectives: This study aims to investigate the progression of retinal microvascular changes using OCTA in young T1DM patients without clinical signs of DR over a period of 3 years. Methods: This prospective, longitudinal study analyzed OCT angiograms of T1DM patients without clinical signs of DR. It included 40 T1DM patients aged between 7 and 20 years old who formed the T1DM study group and 40 healthy subjects with similar demographic characteristics to the control group. The patients underwent comprehensive ophthalmic examination and OCT imaging using a Retina Wide protocol (6 × 6 mm). We analyzed the following microvascular retinal parameters: FAZ area, perimeter and circularity and superficial capillary plexus (SCP) and deep capillary plexus (DCP) vessel density. Results: Statistically significant differences between the two groups were identified for the following parameters: the mean FAZ area at follow-up (0.38 ± 0.13) was larger than the mean FAZ area at baseline (0.31 ±0.11), the mean FAZ perimeter at follow-up (3.22 ± 0.75) was larger than the mean FAZ perimeter at baseline (2.61 ± 00.52) and the men FAZ circularity index at follow-up (0.47 ± 0.13) was decreased compared to the FAZ circularity index at baseline (0.56 ± 0.12). A statistically significant difference were also registered for the following parameter: the total SCP and DCP vessel density was decreased at follow-up (37.47 ± 1.57) compared to baseline (38.79 ± 1.00). Conclusions: OCTA long-term monitoring of T1DM patients represents an effective method for tracking progressive changes in FAZ parameters and capillary plexus vascular density. Full article

Objective: The present study investigated the relationship between protein and amino acid supplementation and various associated aspects among recreational gym goers at 2 gymnasiums in Oradea (Romania). Methods: A total of 165 gym goers (110 men and 55 women, most of them 18–30 years old) with high educational levels were included in the present study, which was conducted as face-to-face interviews. Results: Participants were divided into 4 groups: protein supplement users (PSUs, 42/165), creatine supplement users (CSUs, 38/165), L-carnitine supplement users (LcSUs, 37/165), and protein + creatine + L-carnitine supplement users (PCLcSUs, 48/165). Most consumers were young (18–30 years) and preferred the triple combination. Females consumed PS and CS (38.2% and 34.5%, respectively), while the most-used NSs by males were PCLcS (36.4%) and LcS (27.3%). Obese gym goers opted for LcS consumption (r = 0.999, p < 0.05). Creatine and L-carnitine were consumed for force training (65.79 and 62.16%), while PCLcS and PS were used in cardio + force and force training in equal measures (42.86 and 47.92%, respectively). Most PSUs were gym goers for 7–12 months and more than 1 year (r = 0.999 and r = 0.952, respectively, p < 0.05), while PCLcSUs had a training frequency of at least 5 times a week (r = 0.968, p < 0.05). Muscle mass growth was the primary training focus for all NS users (57.89%), followed by muscular tonus (40.54%, p < 0.05). Almost 30% of one-only NS users reported various side effects, whereas all PCLcSUs claimed side effects (p < 0.05). Conclusions: Age and gender were key factors in diet type, training type, frequency, duration, scope, NS type, and dose intake. The frequency of side effects substantially depended on the kind of NS and the dose consumed. The present study’s results highlight the need for health professionals’ advice and monitoring in personalized diets and protein and amino acid supplementation in recreational gym goers. Full article

This study investigated the effect of cattle age on the color stability of Psoas major steaks under different packaging conditions, including polyvinyl chloride (PVC) film packaging, high-oxygen-modified atmosphere packaging (HiOx-MAP), and carbon monoxide-modified atmosphere packaging (CO-MAP), over a 14-day storage period. Steaks from old cows had a greater myoglobin content than those from young animals (p < 0.05), resulting in a darker beef color. Regardless of animal age, steaks in PVC and HiOx-MAP exhibited poor color stability during storage, as evidenced by the low color intensity and high surface metmyoglobin (MetMb; p < 0.05). These samples also exhibited a reduced MetMb reducing activity (MRA) and oxygen consumption rate (OCR) and higher 2-thiobarbituric acid reactive substance (TBARS) levels, with these effects being evident in steaks from mature cows. In contrast, steaks stored in CO-MAP had greater redness, MRA, and OCR, along with lower surface MetMb and TBARS levels (p < 0.05), contributing to the limited discoloration of steaks from both age groups. These findings suggest that while both harvest age and packaging affect the shelf stability of bovine steaks, packaging plays a more significant role. CO-MAP proved to be more effective than aerobic packaging and may mitigate age-related differences in color stability. Full article

Perpetrating–Suffering Intimate Violence: Self-Harm–Suicide Thoughts and Behaviors, Mental Health, and Alcohol Use Among Mexican Youth During COVID-19

Background The COVID-19 epidemic had a deleterious impact on mental health and substance abuse and led to an increase in several forms of violence, including self-harm and interpersonal violence among youth from low- and middle-income countries. Nevertheless, the relationship between the variables and their directionality has not been recognized. This study describes the relationship directionality between these variables among 18- to 20-year-old Mexican youths during the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods The longitudinal cohort study comprises an evolving group of young Mexican adults: 1390 participants aged 18 in 2021, 654 aged 19 in 2022, and 442 aged 20 in 2023. Proportions by sex—50% were matched in every cohort, and the evolution–age sample accomplishment accounted for 47% in 2022 and 32% in 2023. Results According to a structural equation model, which fit the data from 195 iterations with 246 parameters (X2[2722] = 8327.33, p < 0.001), yielding a CFI of 0.946, a TLI of 0.943, and an RMSEA of 0.029 [0.028–0.029]), perpetrating intimate violence, preceded by suffering intimate violence, combined with suffering anxiety symptoms, was associated with self-harm–suicide thoughts and behaviors (ShSTB), marked distress, dysfunction, and somatization symptoms. The relationship was stronger in women and 20-year-old Mexicans. In men, this pathway was exclusively associated with ShSTB. Suffering from intimate violence has been associated with depression, anxiety, and PTSD symptoms, as well as harmful alcohol use. Conclusions During an epidemic, prevention programs should be designed to warn about self-harm–suicide thoughts and behaviors, not only to ensure the safety of the victims of intimate personal-violence but also to prevent the suicidal behavior of perpetrators. Aging is associated with altered itch perception, potentially due to changes in neuronal function and pruriceptive signaling. The underlying mechanisms, however, remain unclear. We investigated age-related differences in itch sensitivity at behavioral, cellular, and molecular levels. Young and old mice were intradermally injected with various pruritogens, including small molecules (histamine, chloroquine, and serotonin) and peptides (BAM8–22, AY-NH2, and SLIGRL-NH2). Scratching behavior and mechanical itch sensitivity were assessed, and calcium imaging was used to evaluate sensory neuron responses in the dorsal root ganglia. Additionally, immunofluorescence staining was performed to analyze the expression of TRPV1 and Cav3.2. Old mice exhibited reduced scratching behavior following injections, and their neuronal responses to histamine and chloroquine were diminished. Although all treated groups showed increased mechanical alloknesis, the effect was less pronounced in old animals. The expression of TRPV1 and Cav3.2 was also reduced in dorsal root ganglia neurons of old mice. These findings suggest that aging impairs both functional responsiveness and molecular signaling in sensory neurons, contributing to reduced chemical itch sensitivity in aged individuals. Final Adult Height in Girls Treated with GnRH Analogues for Precocious Puberty Around Age Eight

Introductions: Precocious puberty initiated at a very young age causes a severe loss in height potential and should be treated with gonadotropin-releasing hormone agonists (GnRHa). Controversial findings exist regarding the efficacy of GnRHa treatment in girls with central precocious puberty (CPP) onset around the age of 8. This research assessed the impact of GnRHa treatment on the final height (FAH) of 117 girls diagnosed with CPP within this age group. Methods: This retrospective study included 117 CPP girls diagnosed at around age 8 (7–9 years old). Girls who started treatment between the ages of 8 and 9 (n = 71) and 7 and 8 (n = 46) were divided into groups 1 and 2, respectively. Predicted height (PAH), target height (TH), and FAH were calculated from medical records. Girls’ PAH, TH, and FAH were also compared between groups. Results: At beginning of treatment, the girls’ average ages were 8.59 ± 0.27 in group 1 and 7.50 ± 0.47 in group 2. In groups 1 and 2, GnRHa therapy durations were 1.97 ± 0.54 and 2.91 ± 0.61, respectively. There were no significant differences in TH (160.53 ± 5.49 vs. 160.57 ± 4.94), PAH (158.72 ± 5.23 vs. 158.35 ± 5.57), and FAH (162.42 ± 5.32 vs. 162.14 ± 5.70) between groups. FAH improved 4 cm from PAH in both (p = 0.001). Multivariate linear regression analysis showed that baseline height SDS was the main FAH predictor (Beta: 0.572, p = 0.001). Conclusions: GnRHa may improve FAH even if the treatment is delayed after age 8. However, as this improvement is limited for this age group, the therapy option should be individualized and should not be considered for all children. Full article

Introduction: People with disabilities are characterized by suboptimal health and lower self-rating health. Their need for health care is greater, they often have a higher prevalence of health problems and they have more difficulty accessing health care. The aim of this study was to assess the health behaviors and health indicators of 12–18-year-old young people with intellectual disabilities and autism spectrum disorder, and to explore their school-related perceptions in the Northern Great Plain region of Hungary. Materials and Methods: A cross-sectional questionnaire survey was conducted with the participation of 185 young people. A custom questionnaire was used, based on the Health Behavior in School-aged Children (HBSC) survey, assessing eating habits, oral care, physical activity, mental well-being, and self-reported health status. The sample was categorized into three groups: the ID1 (Intellectual Disability level 1) group, encompassing young individuals with mild intellectual disability; the ID2 group, encompassing young people with moderate intellectual disability; and the ID+ASD group, encompassing young individuals affected by both intellectual disability and autism spectrum disorder. Results: Consumption of various food types was below optimal levels. Low intake of fruits and vegetables was common, with only 21.6% of the respondents consuming fruit daily and 23.8% consuming vegetables daily. ID1 group reported significantly higher rates of nervousness several times a week (17.8% vs. 5.6% and 6.9%, p < 0.001), sleep difficulties (28.8% vs. 7.4% and 15.5%, p = 0.032), and dizziness (9.6% vs. 1.9% and 3.4%, p = 0.022) compared to the other two groups. A third school-related factor, related to negative emotions, showed a near-significant difference (p = 0.064), suggesting that students with both autism spectrum disorder and intellectual disability perceive lower levels of acceptance from teachers. On school-free days, computer usage was significantly highest in the ID+ASD group; 50% of them used a computer for at least 4 h per day. Conclusions: To improve mental well-being among affected children, psychological support and the implementation of mental health programs are recommended. In addition to teaching stress management techniques and coping mechanisms, integrating relaxation techniques into comprehensive developmental programs—both individually and in groups—is advised. For teachers, it is recommended to acquire disability-specific communication strategies. Full article
