Background/Objectives: Dental practitioners widely use dental implants to treat traumatic cases. Titanium implants are currently the most popular choice among dental practitioners and surgeons. The discovery of newer polymeric materials is also influencing the interest of dental professionals in alternative options. A comparative study between existing titanium implants and newer polymeric materials can enhance professionals’ ability to select the most suitable implant for a patient’s treatment. This study aimed to investigate material property advantages of high-performance thermoplastic biopolymers such as PEEK and PEKK, as compared to the time-tested titanium implants, and to find the most suitable and economically fit implant material. Methods: Three distinct implant material properties were assigned—PEEK, PEKK, and commercially pure titanium (CP Ti-55)—to dental implants measuring 5.5 mm by 9 mm, along with two distinct titanium (TI6AL4V) abutments. Twelve three-dimensional (3D) models of bone blocks, representing the mandibular right molar area with Osseo-integrated implants were created. The implant, abutment, and screw were assumed to be linear; elastic, isotropic, and orthotropic properties were attributed to the cancellous and cortical bone. Twelve model sets underwent a three-dimensional finite element analysis to evaluate von Mises stress and total deformation under 250 N vertical and oblique (30 degree) loads on the top surface of each abutment. Results: The study revealed that the time-tested titanium implant outperforms PEEK and PEKK in terms of marginal bone preservation, while PEEK outperforms PEKK. Many low-temperature applications, such as rocket engines and liquefied natural gas (LNG) transport pumps, necessitate ultra-low-temperature operational environments. In these conditions, the properties of lubricating oils and greases are significantly influenced by temperature, leading to the widespread adoption of solid lubrication. Currently, there is no international research regarding the influence of bearing coatings on the subsurface stress distribution in raceways. The Lundberg–Palmgren (L-P) theory states that subsurface stress variations govern bearing lifespan. Therefore, this paper utilizes existing formulas and Python programming to calculate the subsurface stress field of the inner raceway in a MoS2 solid-lubricated angular contact ball bearing. Furthermore, it analyzes the impacts of factors such as coating material properties, slide-to-roll ratio, traction coefficient, and load on its subsurface stress field. The results reveal that for solid-lubricated ball bearings, as the load increases, the maximum subsurface stress shifts closer to the center of the contact area, and the maximum subsurface shear stress becomes more concentrated. As the traction coefficient increases, the stress on the XZ-plane side increases and its position moves closer to the surface, while the opposite trend is observed on the other side. Additionally, the maximum value of the subsurface von Mises stress is approximately 0.64P0, and the maximum value of the orthogonal shear stress component τyz in the subsurface is approximately 0.25P0. Finite Element Analysis on Stress Development in Alveolar Bone During Insertion of a Novel Dental Implant Design

A novel macrodesign for a dental implant characterized by a non-monotonic variation in core diameter and thread shape has been described to produce lower stress levels during insertion as compared to conventional tapered implants. Two finite element models resembling the lower left molar region with preformed osteotomies were created based on a cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) scan. Insertion of both the novel and the conventional, tapered implant type were simulated using Standard for the Exchange of Product model data (STEP) files of both implant types. Von Mises equivalent stress, strain development, and amount of redistributed bone were recorded. The conventional implant demonstrated a continuous increase in strain values and reaction moment throughout the insertion process, with a brief decrease observed during the final stages. Stress levels in the cortical bone gradually increased, followed by a reduction when the implant was finally positioned subcrestally. The novel implant achieved the maximum magnitude of reaction moment and cortical bone strain values when the implant’s maximum core diameter passed the cortical bone layer at around 60% of the insertion process. Following a notable decrease, both the reaction moment and stress started to rise again as the implant penetrated further. The novel implant removed more bones in the trabecular region while the conventional implant predominantly interacted with cortical bone. Overall, the novel design seems to be less traumatic to alveolar bone during the insertion process and hence may lead to reduced levels of initial peri-implant bone loss. Full article

The scaphoid is the most commonly fractured carpal bone. Headless compression screws became the gold standard for fixation, but the ideal screw diameter remains debated. This study investigates the relative benefit of using a larger screw diameter to improve stability in typical scaphoid fractures. It also examines the effects of preload and screw length on mechanical behaviour. A finite element (FE) model of a mid-waist scaphoid fracture was created. Screws from Medartis (1.7 mm, 2.2 mm, and 3.0 mm diameter; 23 mm length) were placed along the longitudinal axis. Boundary and loading conditions matched prior studies. Interfragmentary displacement (IFD) and von Mises stress were compared across screw sizes. The effects of screw length and preload were also evaluated. Maximum in-plane IFD was 2.08 mm (1.7 mm screw), 0.53 mm (2.2 mm), and 0.27 mm (3.0 mm). The 1.7 mm screw exceeded the scaphoid’s average ultimate stress (60.51 MPa). Increasing preload reduced IFD, especially above 60 N. Screws longer than 1.5 times the mid-waist diameter offered no added benefit. Larger screws provide better biomechanical fracture stability. However, the gain from 2.2 mm to 3.0 mm is minor, while 1.7 mm screws lack sufficient strength. The 2.2 mm screw offers a good balance of stability and bone preservation, making it the preferred choice. Full article

This study evaluated the effect of various adhesive systems, particularly silane application, on the repair bond strength of a nanofill resin composite and associated stress distribution using finite element analysis (FEA). A total of 105 composite specimens (4 × 6 mm) were aged by thermal cycling (10,000 cycles), roughened, etched with phosphoric acid, and assigned to seven groups (n = 15): G1. control—no adhesive; G2. Single Bond Universal Adhesive; G3. composite primer; G4. PQ1; G5. Silane + PQ1; G6. Clearfil Universal Bond; G7. All-Bond Universal. Shear bond strength was measured using a universal testing machine (1 mm/min), and failure modes were microscopically classified. FEA was conducted under static and fatigue conditions using 3D models built in Fusion-360. Mechanical properties were obtained from technical data and the literature. A 300 N load was applied and contact detection (0.05 mm) and constraint zones were defined. Statistical analysis was performed using one-way ANOVA and Tukey’s HSD (p = 0.05). Pearson’s correlation was used to assess the relationship between bond strength and von Mises stress. The highest bond strength was found in G2 (21.54 MPa) while G1 showed the lowest (8.86 MPa). Silane-treated groups exhibited favorable stress distribution and a strong correlation between experimental and simulated outcomes. Silane applications significantly enhance composite repair performance. Full article

The design of custom abutments (CA) can affect the mechanical reliability of implant-supported restorations. The purpose of the study was to evaluate the influence of design parameters on the fatigue limit of CA and to compare optimized custom designs with the reference abutment (RA). A morse-tapered dental implant, an anatomical abutment, and a connector screw were digitalized using microcomputed tomography. A cone beam computed tomography scan was obtained from one of the authors to virtually place the implant-abutment assembly in the upper central incisor. Ten design parameters were selected according to the structural geometry of the RA and the implant planning. A reverse-engineered RA model was created in SOLIDWORKS and was modified considering a Taguchi orthogonal array to generate 36 CAs with ±20% dimensional variations. Finite element analysis was conducted in ABAQUS, and fatigue limits were estimated using Fe-safe. ANOVA (α = 0.1) identified the most influential parameters. Von Mises stress values ranged from 229 MPa to 302 MPa, and 94.4% of the CAs had a higher fatigue limit than the RA. Three parameters significantly affected the fatigue performance of the implant system. The design process of custom abutments includes critical design parameters that can be optimized for longer lifetimes of implant-abutment restorations. Full article

This study presents a methodology for developing and validating digital models of tooth-inlay systems, aiming to trace the complete workflow from clinical procedures to simulation by involving dental professionals—dentists for manual cavity preparation and dental technicians for restoration modelling—while integrating micro-computed tomography (micro-CT) imaging with finite element analysis (FEA). The proposed workflow includes (1) the acquisition of high-resolution 3D micro-CT scans of a non-restored tooth, (2) image segmentation and reconstruction to create anatomically accurate digital twins and mesh generation, (3) the selection of proper resin and the 3D printing of four typodonts, (4) the manual preparation of cavities on the typodonts, (5) the acquisition of high-resolution 3D micro-CT scans of the typodonts, (6) mesh generation, digital inlay and onlay modelling and material property assignment, and (7) nonlinear FEA simulations under representative masticatory loading. The approach enables the visualisation of stress and deformation patterns, with preliminary results indicating stress concentrations at the tooth-restoration interface integrating different cavity alternatives and restorations on the same tooth. Quantitative outputs include von Mises stress, strain energy density, and displacement distribution. This study demonstrates the feasibility of using image-based, tooth-specific digital twins for biomechanical modelling in dentistry. The developed framework lays the groundwork for future investigations into the optimisation of restoration design and material selection in clinical applications. Full article

Double-Side-Cooled (DSC) power modules, widely utilized in various industrial and transportation applications, are favored for their remarkable high cooling efficiency and minimal packaging parasitics. To extend the life cycle, the design and optimization of metal or alloy spacers have garnered significant research attention due to their role in mitigating thermal-expansion-mismatch-induced stresses. Among the optimization approaches, topology optimization (TO) methods have the merit of generating innovative spacer shapes, thereby maximizing the buffering effects. However, without certain design considerations and constraints predetermined, the overall processes can become computationally costly. This paper proposes an efficient strategy for finding the optimized spacer topology for a double-sided 1700 V/400 A DSC SiC MOSFET power module. First, comparative thermal-stress investigations are carried out to predetermine the spacer height prior to TOs. Subsequently, to identify the appropriate optimization target, different objectives are employed in the TOs of a 2D simplified model. Following this, TO with the selected target function is performed on 3D simplified models featuring diverse spacer combination architectures, with the preferable one chosen based on the outcomes. Eventually, leveraging the predetermined spacer height, objective function, and preliminary structure, a 3D TO spacer design utilizing a full-domain model is conducted to validate the effectiveness of the proposed methodologies. The final spacer design reduces the maximum von-Mises stress in the attachment by 19.42% (from 111.78 MPa with brick spacers of the same height to 90.07 MPa). The proposed multi-step TO method can therefore be used to improve the thermo-mechanical lifetime of DSC power modules. Full article

Objectives: Our goal was to assess the role of leaflet geometry on the structural deterioration of bioprosthetic aortic valves (BAVs) in a closed configuration. Methods: With a Fung-type orthotropic model, finite element modeling was used to create ten cases with parabolic, circular and spline leaflet curvatures and six leaflet angles. Results: A circular circumferential curvature led to lower von Mises and compressive stresses in both the coaptation and load-bearing areas, reduced tensile stresses in the coaptation regions, and increased tensile stresses in the load-bearing areas. A parabolic radial curvature reduced von Mises stresses in the coaptation, as well as the load-bearing regions, reduced compressive stresses in the coaptation, and reduced tensile stresses in the load-bearing regions, leading to a slight increase in the minimized tensile stress in the coaptation regions (1.794 vs. 1.765 MPa) and the minimized compressive stress in the load-bearing regions (0.772 vs. 0.768 MPa). Within a range of downward inclination of the leaflets, all stresses in the coaptation regions decreased. A parabolic circumferential curvature, a linear radial curvature, and, for most cases, upward leaflet inclinations were associated with larger contact pressures between the leaflets. Conclusions: A parabolic radial curvature and downward leaflet inclination likely lead to the longer durability of BAVs. Full article

Approximately 20% of emissions from air travel are attributed to the auxiliary power units (APUs) carried in commercial aircraft. This paper proposes to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in international air transport by adopting proton-exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cells to replace APUs in commercial aircraft: we consider the design of three compressed hydrogen storage vessels made of 304 stainless steel, 6061-T6 aluminium, and Grade 5 (Ti-6Al-4V) titanium and capable of delivering 440 kW—enough for a PEM fuel cell for a Boeing 777. Complete structural analyses for pressures from 35 MPa to 70 MPa and wall thicknesses of 25, 50, 100, and 150 mm are used to determine the optimal material for aviation applications. Key factors such as deformation, safety factors, and Von Mises equivalent stress are evaluated to ensure structural integrity under a range of operating conditions. In addition, CO2 emissions from a conventional 440 kW gas turbine APU and an equivalent PEM fuel cell are compared. This study provides insights into optimal material selection for compressed hydrogen storage vessels, emphasising safety, reliability, cost, and weight reduction. Ultimately, this research aims to facilitate the adoption of fuel cell technology in aviation, contributing to greenhouse emissions reduction and hence sustainable air transport. Full article

Optimizing stress distribution at the bone–implant interface is critical to enhancing the long-term biomechanical performance of dental implant systems. Vertical misalignment between splinted implants can result in elevated localized stresses, increasing the risk of material degradation and peri-implant bone resorption. This study employs three-dimensional finite element analysis (FEA) to evaluate the mechanical response of peri-implant bone under oblique loading, focusing on how variations in vertical implant platform alignment influence stress transmission. Four implant configurations with different vertical placements were modeled: (A) all crestal, (B) central subcrestal with lateral crestal, (C) lateral subcrestal with central crestal, and (D) all subcrestal. A 400 N oblique load was applied at 45° simulated masticatory forces. Von Mises stress distributions were analyzed in both cortical and trabecular bone, with a physiological threshold of 100 MPa considered for cortical bone. Among the models, configuration B exhibited the highest cortical stress, exceeding the physiological threshold. In contrast, configurations with uniform vertical positioning, particularly model D, demonstrated more favorable stress dispersion and lower peak values. Stress concentrations were consistently observed at the implant–abutment interface across all configurations, identifying this area as critical for design improvements. These findings underscore the importance of precise vertical alignment in implant-supported restorations to minimize stress concentrations and improve the mechanical reliability of dental implants. The results provide valuable insights for the development of next-generation implant systems with enhanced biomechanical integration and material performance under functional loading. Full article

Background/Objectives: Dental cavity preparation is a critical procedure in restorative dentistry that involves the removal of decayed tissue while preserving a healthy tooth structure. Excessive stress during tooth preparation leads to enamel cracking, dentin damage, and long term compressive pulp health. This study employed finite element analysis (FEA) to investigate the stress distribution in dental structures during cavity preparation using round diamond burs of varying diameters and depths of cut (DOC). Methods: A three-dimensional human maxillary first molar was generated from computed tomography (CT) scan data using 3D Slicer, Fusion 360, and ANSYS Space Claim 2024 R-2. Finite element analysis (FEA) was conducted using ANSYS Workbench 2024. Round diamond burs with diameters of 1, 2, and 3 mm were modeled. Cutting simulations were performed for DOC of 1 mm and 2 mm. The burs were treated as rigid bodies, whereas the dental structures were modeled as deformable bodies using the Cowper–Symonds model. Results: The simulations revealed that larger bur diameters and deeper cuts led to higher stress magnitudes, particularly in the enamel and dentin. The maximum von Mises stress was reached at 136.98 MPa, and dentin 140.33 MPa. Smaller burs (≤2 mm) and lower depths of cut (≤1 mm) produced lower stress values and were optimal for minimizing dental structural damage. Pulpal stress remained low but showed an increasing trend with increased DOC and bur size. Conclusions: This study provides clinically relevant guidance for reducing mechanical damage during cavity preparation by recommending the use of smaller burs and controlled cutting depths. The originality of this study lies in its integration of CT-based anatomy with dynamic FEA modeling, enabling a realistic simulation of tool–tissue interaction in dentistry. These insights can inform bur selection, cutting protocols, and future experimental validations. Full article

The edge effect refers to what occurs when an object undergoes elastic contact with the edge of a material. This is common in practical applications, but the understanding of this phenomenon is not yet mature enough, and understanding the microscopic characteristics of the material regarding this phenomenon is necessary. This article investigates the edge effects of single-crystal silicon at different indentation positions through molecular dynamics simulations. The results indicate that the edge effect of the indentation is influenced by the indentation position and depth. The closer the indentation head is to the edge of the workpiece, the more particles are extruded from the side of the workpiece and the wider the collapse range of the indentation surface. At the same time, the indentation position also affects the distribution of the von Mises stress and phase transition area. When the edge effect occurs, the von Mises stress and phase transition region tend to be concentrated near the workpiece edge. This study demonstrates the atomic-scale deformation mechanism of single-crystal silicon under varying indentation positions. Full article

The Influence of Insertion Torque on Stress Distribution in Peri-Implant Bones Around Ultra-Short Implants: An FEA Study

Using ultra-short dental implants is a promising alternative to extensive bone grafting procedures for patients with atrophic posterior mandibles and vertical bone loss. However, the amount of insertion torque (IT) applied during implant placement significantly influences stress distribution in the peri-implant bone, which affects implant stability and long-term success. Materials and Methods: This study used finite element analysis (FEA) to examine how different insertion torques (35 N·cm and 75 N·cm) affect stress distribution in cortical and trabecular bone types D2 and D4 surrounding ultra-short implants. Von Mises equivalent stress values were compared with ultimate bone strength thresholds to evaluate the potential for microdamage during insertion. Results: The findings demonstrate that increasing IT from 35 N·cm to 75 N·cm led to a significant increase in peri-implant bone stress. Specifically, cortical bone stress in D4 bone increased from approximately 79 MPa to 142 MPa with higher IT, exceeding physiological limits and elevating the risk of microfractures and bone necrosis. In contrast, lower IT values kept stress within safe limits, ensuring optimal primary stability without damaging the bone. These results underscore the need to strike a balance between achieving sufficient implant stability and avoiding mechanical trauma to the surrounding bone. Conclusions: Accurate control of insertion torque during the placement of ultra-short dental implants is crucial to minimize bone damage and promote optimal osseointegration. Excessive torque, especially in low-density bone, can compromise implant success by inducing excessive stress, thereby increasing the risk of early failure. Full article

This work focuses on characterizing structured metamaterials by assessing their elastic law and ultimate strength using finite elements and limit analysis applied to a representative volume element. The elastic and plastic behavior of a reference geometry—the octet truss lattice—is obtained by calculating the response of the representative volume element subjected to prescribed tensor strain bases, namely pure normal strain and pure shear, along the cube symmetry directions. The geometry of the body centered cubic and pure cubic phases of the representative volume element has been analyzed, highlighting that the elastic isotropic behavior depends on the ratio between the stiffnesses of the two phases. The ultimate behavior of the structure has been analyzed through the direct application of the lower bound method of limit analysis. The method has been implemented in a direct finite element environment using the limit analysis procedure developed by the authors. The method was already used and described in previous publications and is briefly recalled. It is based on the identification of the linear operator linking the self-equilibrated stress set to a discrete parameter manifold, accounting for the piecewise continuous distribution of the permanent strain. In the paper, it is highlighted that for different aspect ratios between the body-centered cubic and the pure cubic phase geometry, different ratios between limit shear stress and normal stress arise, the isotropic one assumed to coincide with the von Mises result, where σ0τ0=3.
