Cooked-rice aroma strongly affects consumer choice, yet the chemical traits distinguishing glutinous rice from normal-amylose japonica rice remain underexplored because earlier studies targeted only a few dozen volatiles using one-dimensional gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC-MS). In this study, four glutinous and seven normal Japanese cultivars were cooked under identical conditions, their headspace volatiles trapped with MonoTrap and qualitatively profiled by comprehensive GC × GC-TOFMS. The two-dimensional platform resolved 1924 peaks—about ten-fold previous coverage—and, together with hierarchical clustering, PCA, heatmap visualization and volcano plots, cleanly separated the starch classes (78.3% cumulative PCA variance; Euclidean distance >140). Volcano plots highlighted 277 compounds enriched in the glutinous cultivars and 295 in Koshihikari, including 270 compounds that were not previously documented in rice. Normal cultivars were dominated by ethers, aldehydes, amines and other nitrogenous volatiles associated with grainy, grassy and toasty notes. Glutinous cultivars showed abundant ketones, furans, carboxylic acids, thiols, steroids, nitro compounds, pyrroles and diverse hydrocarbons and aromatics, yielding sweeter, fruitier and floral accents. These results expand the volatile library for japonica rice, provide molecular markers for flavor-oriented breeding and demonstrate the power of GC × GC-TOFMS coupled with chemometrics for grain aroma research. Accurate forecasting of energy consumption in buildings is essential for achieving energy efficiency and reducing carbon emissions. However, many existing models rely on limited input variables and overlook the complex influence of indoor environmental quality (IEQ). In this study, we assess the performance of hybrid machine learning ensembles for predicting hourly energy demand in a smart office environment using high-frequency IEQ sensor data. Environmental variables including carbon dioxide concentration (CO2), particulate matter (PM2.5), total volatile organic compounds (TVOCs), noise levels, humidity, and temperature were recorded over a four-month period. We evaluated two ensemble configurations combining support vector regression (SVR) with either Random Forest or LightGBM as base learners and Ridge regression as a meta-learner, alongside single-model baselines such as SVR and artificial neural networks (ANN). The SVR combined with Random Forest and Ridge regression demonstrated the highest predictive performance, achieving a mean absolute error (MAE) of 1.20, a mean absolute percentage error (MAPE) of 8.92%, and a coefficient of determination (R2) of 0.82. Feature importance analysis using SHAP values, together with non-parametric statistical testing, identified TVOCs, humidity, and PM2.5 as the most influential predictors of energy use. These findings highlight the value of integrating high-resolution IEQ data into predictive frameworks and demonstrate that such data can significantly improve forecasting accuracy. This effect is attributed to the direct link between these IEQ variables and the activation of energy-intensive systems; fluctuations in humidity drive HVAC energy use for dehumidification, while elevated pollutant levels (TVOCs, PM2.5) trigger increased ventilation to maintain indoor air quality, thus raising the total energy load. Goji berries (Lycium barbarum L.) are considered a functional food due to their high content of bioactive compounds with demonstrated health benefits. This study evaluated four cultivars (G3, G4, G5, and G7) grown under Mediterranean climate conditions, focusing on their physicochemical properties (total soluble solids, titratable acidity, and pH), bioactive compound (sugars and organic acids, total and individual phenolic and carotenoid compounds, and antioxidant activities (DPPH and CUPRAC assay)), and aromatic profiles (by GC-MS) to assess their suitability for fresh consumption or incorporation into food products. G4 exhibited the most favorable physicochemical characteristics, with the highest total soluble solids (20.2 °Brix) and sugar content (92.8 g 100 g−1 dw). G5 stood out for its lower titratable acidity (0.34%) and highest ripening index (54.8), indicating desirable flavor attributes. Concerning bioactive compounds, G3 and G4 showed the highest total phenolic content (17.9 and 19.1 mg GAE g−1 dw, respectively), with neochlorogenic acid being predominant. G4 was notable for its high carotenoid content, particularly zeaxanthin (1722.6 μg g−1 dw). These compounds significantly contributed to antioxidant activity. Volatile organic compound (VOC) profiles revealed alcohols and aldehydes as the dominant chemical families, with hexanal being the most abundant. G5 and G7 exhibited the highest total VOC concentrations. Principal component analysis grouped G3 and G4 based on their high sugar and phenolic content, while G5 and G7 were characterized by their complex aromatic profiles. Therefore, G3 and G4 are promising candidates for fresh consumption and potential functional applications, while G5 and G7 are particularly suitable for new product development due to their nutraceutical and aromatic value. This study aims to quantify total VOC emissions and evaluate how torrefaction alters the heat of combustion of three agricultural residues. The work examines the amount of VOC emissions during the torrefaction process at various temperatures and investigates the changes in the heat of combustion of agri-biomass resulting from the torrefaction process. The process was carried out at the following temperatures: 225, 250, 275, and 300 °C. Total VOC emission factors were determined. The reaction kinetics analysis revealed that meadow hay exhibited the most stable thermal behavior with the lowest activation energy. At the same time, rye straw demonstrated higher thermal resistance and complex multi-step degradation characteristics. The authors analyze three types of agricultural biomass: meadow hay, rye straw, and oat straw. The research was divided into five stages: determination of moisture content in the sample, determination of ash content, thermogravimetric analysis, measurement of total VOC emissions from the biomass torrefaction process, and determination of the heat of combustion of the obtained torrefied biomass. Based on the research, it was found that torrefaction of biomass causes the emission of torgas containing VOC in the amount of 2–10 mg/g of torrefied biomass, which can be used energetically, e.g., to support the torrefaction process, and the torrefied biomass shows a higher value of the heat of combustion. Unlike prior studies focused on single feedstocks or limited temperature ranges, this work systematically compares three major crop residues across four torrefaction temperatures and directly couples VOC quantifications. Monitoring water quality is crucial for achieving clean water and sanitation goals, particularly in remote areas. The project “Morbidity vs. Water Quality for Human Consumption in Tonosí: A Pilot Study” aimed to enhance water quality assessments in Panama using advanced analytical techniques to assess volatile organic compounds, heavy metals, and microbiological pathogens. To support this, the Technical Unit for Water Quality (UTECH) was established, featuring a novel mobile laboratory with cutting-edge technology for accurate testing, minimal chemical reagent use, reduced waste generation, and equipped with a solar-powered battery system. The aim of this paper is to explore the design, deployment, and impact of the UTECH. Furthermore, this study presents results from three sampling points in Tonosí, where several parameters exceeded regulatory limits, demonstrating the capabilities of the UTECH and highlighting the need for ongoing monitoring and intervention. The study also assesses the environmental, social, and economic impacts of the UTECH in alignment with the Sustainable Development Goals and national initiatives. Finally, a SWOT analysis illustrates the UTECH’s potential to improve water quality assessments in Panama while identifying areas for sustainable growth. The study showcases the successful integration of advanced mobile laboratory technologies into water quality monitoring, contributing to sustainable development in Panama and offering a replicable model for similar initiatives in other regions. High-Performance Pd-Pt/α-MnO2 Catalysts for the Oxidation of Toluene

Herein, α-MnO2-supported Pt-Pd bimetal (xPd-yPt/α-MnO2; x and y are the weight loadings (wt%) of Pd and Pt, respectively; x = 0, 0.23, 0.47, 0.93, and 0.92 wt%; and y = 0.91, 0.21, 0.46, 0.89, and 0 wt%) catalysts were prepared using the polyvinyl alcohol-protected NaBH4 reduction method. The physicochemical properties of the catalysts were determined by means of various techniques and their catalytic activities for toluene oxidation were evaluated. It was found that among the xPd-yPt/α-MnO2 samples, 0.93Pd-0.89Pt/α-MnO2 showed the best catalytic performance, with the toluene oxidation rate at 156 °C (rcat) and space velocity = 60,000 mL/(g h) being 6.34 × 10−4 mol/(g s), much higher than that of 0.91Pt/α-MnO2 (1.31 × 10−4 mol/(g s)) and that of 0.92Pd/α-MnO2 (6.13 × 10−5 mol/(g s)) at the same temperature. The supported Pd-Pt bimetallic catalysts possessed higher Mn3+/Mn4+ and Oads/Olatt molar ratios, which favored the enhancement in catalytic activity of the supported Pd-Pt bimetallic catalysts. Furthermore, the 0.47Pd-0.46Pt/α-MnO2 sample showed better resistance to sulfur dioxide poisoning. The partial deactivation of 0.47Pd-0.46Pt/α-MnO2 was attributed to the formation of sulfate species on the sample surface, which covered the active site of the sample, thus decreasing its toluene oxidation activity. In addition, the in situ DRIFTS results demonstrated that benzaldehyde and benzoate were the intermediate products of toluene oxidation. Full article

The aim of this study was to prevent the development of microorganisms in the refrigerated storage of tench by releasing allyl isothiocyanate (AITC) produced by black mustard seeds. Tench reared in an aquaculture centre were sacrificed and the fillets were separated. Different amounts of defatted mustard seed (300, 400 and 500 mg) were added to hermetic polypropylene trays. Microbiological, sensory, and gas chromatography with MS detection analysis were done. AITC release increased progressively until the third day of storage, significantly delaying the development of microorganisms in samples with higher mustard seed content. The tasting panel detected positive aromas at the beginning of the study, but these decreased and negative aromas appeared. The mustard seed treatment resulted in a higher positive aroma at the end of the storage, reducing rotting and ammonia odours. A total of 31 volatile compounds were detected and grouped into hydrocarbon, alcohol, benzenoid, isothiocyanate, ketone, acetate, aldehyde, and others. Butylated hydroxytoluene, an indicator of bacterial contamination, was the major aromatic compound found during storage. The release of AITC resulted in fewer organic compounds with negative aromas appearing during storage. PCA analysis allowed us to classify the assays during storage according to their volatile profiles, confirming the differences observed between treatments. Thus, adding mustard seed to fish packaging could be a viable alternative to extending the product’s shelf life and ensuring food safety. Full article

Rose hips are rich in polyphenols, making them a promising ingredient for the development of functional fruit-based beverages. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of Pulsed Electric Field (PEF) extraction treatment on rose hip (RH) pulp to enhance the extraction of polyphenols, carotenoids, and volatile compounds. Additionally, this study examined the impact of adding rose hip berries during different stages of carbohydrate fermentation on the resulting phenolic and aroma profiles. A control wort and four experimental formulations were prepared. Rose hip pulp—treated or untreated with PEF—was added either during fermentation or beforehand, and the volatiles produced were analyzed using GC-MS (in triplicate). Fermentation was carried out over 10 days at 20 °C using Saccharomyces cerevisiae and Torulaspora delbrueckii. At a 10:1 ratio, all beverage samples were subjected to physicochemical testing and HPLC analysis for polyphenols, organic acids, and carotenoids, as well as GC-MS analysis for aroma compounds. The results demonstrated that the use of PEF-treated rose hips significantly improved phenolic compound extraction. Moreover, the PEF treatment enhanced the aroma profile of the beverage, contributing to a more complex and appealing sensory experience. This research highlights the rich polyphenol content of rose hips and the potential of PEF-treated fruit as a natural ingredient to improve both the functional and sensory qualities of fruit-based beverages. Their application opens new possibilities for the development of innovative, health-promoting drinks in the brewing industry. Full article

This article describes a new software architecture for the non-invasive detection of canine leishmaniasis disease. The proposed platform combines gas-sensing technologies, artificial intelligence (AI), and modular cloud-based software components to identify disease-specific volatile organic compounds (VOCs) found in dog breath and hair samples. The system, which has a multi-tier architecture that includes data collection, pre-processing, machine learning-based analysis, diagnosis-request processing, and user interfaces for veterinarians, faculty researchers, and dog owners, has been integrated into a Li-ion Power website plug-in. The primary goal of implementing the proposed platform is to detect parasites at any point they are infectious to a host. This includes detecting parasites at all stages of their life cycle, where they can infect a new host. In addition, this is crucial for accurate diagnosis, effective treatment, and preventing further transmission. Full article

Background: Phoebe zhennan and Phoebe chekiangensis are valuable evergreen trees recognized for their unique aromas and ecological significance, yet the organ-related distribution and functional implications of aroma-active volatiles remain insufficiently characterized. Methods: In this study, we applied an integrated GC-MS-based volatile metabolomics approach combined with a relative odor activity value (rOAV) analysis to comprehensively profile and compare the volatile metabolite landscape in the seeds and leaves of both species. Results: In total, 1666 volatile compounds were putatively identified, of which 540 were inferred as key aroma-active contributors based on the rOAV analysis. A multivariate statistical analysis revealed clear tissue-related separation: the seeds were enriched in sweet, floral, and fruity volatiles, whereas the leaves contained higher levels of green leaf volatiles and terpenoids associated with ecological defense. KEGG pathway enrichment indicated that terpenoid backbone and phenylpropanoid biosynthesis pathways played major roles in shaping these divergent profiles. A Venn diagram analysis further uncovered core and unique volatiles underlying species and tissue specificity. Conclusions: These insights provide an integrated reference for understanding tissue-divergent volatile profiles in Phoebe species and offer a basis for fragrance-oriented selection, ecological trait evaluation, and the sustainable utilization of organ-related metabolic characteristics in breeding and conservation programs. The energetic valorization of digestate obtained from anaerobic digestion (AD) of the organic fraction of municipal solid waste (OFMSW) was investigated via pyrolysis in a bench-scale rotary kiln. The mass rate of dried digestate to the rotary kiln pyrolyzer was fixed at 500 gr/h. The effect of the pyrolysis temperature was investigated at 600, 700, and 800 °C. The pyrolysis products, char, oil, and gas, were quantified and chemically analyzed. It was observed that with the increase in the temperature from 600 to 800 °C, the char decreased from 60.3% to 52.2% and the gas increased from 26.5% to 35.3%. With the aim of increasing the methane production and methane concentration in syngas, the effect of CaO addition to the pyrolysis process was investigated at the same temperature, too. The mass ratio CaO/dried digestate was set at 0.2. The addition of CaO sorbent has a clear effect on the yield and composition of pyrolysis products. Under the experimental conditions, CaO was observed to act both as a CO2 sorbent and as a catalyst, promoting cracking and reforming reactions of volatile compounds. In more detail, at the investigated temperatures, a net reduction in CO2 concentration was observed in syngas, accompanied by an increase in CH4 concentration. The gas yield decreased with the CaO addition because of CO2 chemisorption. The oil yield decreased as well, probably because of the cracking and reforming effect of the CaO on the volatiles. A very promising performance of the CaO sorbent was observed at 600 °C; at this temperature, the CO2 concentration decreased from 32.2 to 13.9 mol %, and the methane concentration increased from 16.1 to 29.4 mol %. To explore an industrial fermentation approach for traditional mung bean sour pulp, this study isolated core microorganisms including lactic acid bacteria and yeasts from naturally fermented samples and constructed a synthetic microbial community. The optimized community consisted of Lactiplantibacillus pentosus, Lactococcus garvieae, and Cyberlindnera jadinii at a ratio of 7:3:0.1 and was used to ferment cooked mung bean pulp with a material-to-water ratio of 1:8 and 1% sucrose addition. Under these conditions, the final product exhibited significantly higher levels of protein (4.55 mg/mL), flavonoids (0.10 mg/mL), polyphenols (0.11 mg/mL), and vitamin C (7.75 μg/mL) than traditionally fermented mung bean sour pulp, along with enhanced antioxidant activity. The analysis of organic acids, free amino acids, and volatile compounds showed that lactic acid was the main acid component, the bitter amino acid content was reduced, the volatile flavor compounds were more abundant, and the level of harmful compound dimethyl sulfide was significantly decreased. These results indicate that fermentation using a synthetic microbial community effectively improved the nutritional quality, flavor, and safety of mung bean sour pulp. Full article

Spatiotemporal Assessment of Benzene Exposure Characteristics in a Petrochemical Industrial Area Using Mobile-Extraction Differential Optical Absorption Spectroscopy (Me-DOAS)

Petrochemical complexes are spatially expansive and host diverse emission sources, making accurate monitoring of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) challenging using conventional two-dimensional methods. This study introduces Mobile-extraction Differential Optical Absorption Spectroscopy (Me-DOAS), a real-time, three-dimensional remote sensing technique for assessing benzene emissions in the Ulsan petrochemical complex, South Korea. A vehicle-mounted Me-DOAS system conducted monthly measurements throughout 2024, capturing data during four daily intervals to evaluate diurnal variation. Routes included perimeter loops and grid-based transects within core industrial zones. The highest benzene concentrations were observed in February (mean: 64.28 ± 194.69 µg/m3; geometric mean: 5.13 µg/m3), with exceedances of the national annual standard (5 µg/m3) in several months. Notably, nighttime and early morning sessions showed elevated levels, suggesting contributions from nocturnal operations and meteorological conditions such as atmospheric inversion. A total of 179 exceedances (≥30 µg/m3) were identified, predominantly in zones with benzene-handling activities. Correlation analysis revealed a significant relationship between high concentrations and specific emission sources. These results demonstrate the utility of Me-DOAS in capturing spatiotemporal emission dynamics and support its application in exposure risk assessment and industrial emission control. The findings provide a robust framework for targeted management strategies and call for integration with source apportionment and dispersion modeling tools. Full article

The reliability of passive samplers in measuring volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in indoor air depends on whether the uptake rate is constant given the environmental conditions and sampler exposure duration. The first phase of this study evaluated the performance of charcoal-based, solvent-extracted passive samplers (e.g., Radiello® 130 passive samplers with white diffusive bodies) over exposure periods ranging from 1 week to 1 year in a test house with known vapor intrusion (VI). Chloroform %Bias values exceeded the ±30% acceptance criterion after 4 weeks exposure. Benzene, hexane, and trichloroethylene (TCE) concentrations were within the acceptance criterion for up to three months. Toluene and tetrachloroethylene (PCE), the two least volatile compounds, demonstrated uniform uptake rates over one year. In the second phase of this study, testing of the longer exposure times of 6 months and 1 year were evaluated with three additional passive samplers: Waterloo Membrane SamplerTM (WMSTM), SKC 575 with secondary diffusive cover, and Radiello® 130 passive samplers with yellow diffusive bodies. The SKC 575 and Radiello® 130 passive samplers produced acceptable results (%Bias ≤ 30%) over the 6-month exposure period, while the WMSTM sampler results favored petroleum hydrocarbon more than chlorinated solvent uptake. After the 1-year exposure period, the passive sampler performances were acceptable under specific conditions of this study. The results suggest that all three samplers can produce acceptable results over exposure time periods beyond 30 days and up to a year for some compounds. Full article

The overall efficiency of combining denitrification and volatile organic compound (VOC) removal through selective catalytic reduction (SCR) technology is currently mainly limited by the VOC removal aspect. However, existing studies have not studied the microscopic mechanism of the interaction between VOCs and catalysts, failing to provide a theoretical basis for catalysts. Therefore, this work explored the interaction mechanisms between SCR catalysts doped with different additives and typical VOCs (acetone and toluene) in flue gas based on density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The results showed that the VNi-TiO2 surface exhibited a high adsorption energy of −0.80 eV for acetone and a high adsorption energy of −1.02 eV for toluene on the VMn-TiO2 surface. Electronic structure analysis revealed the VMn-TiO2 and VNi-TiO2 surfaces exhibited more intense orbital hybridization with acetone and toluene, promoting charge transfer between the two and resulting in stronger interactions. The analysis of temperature on adsorption free energy showed that VMn-TiO2 and VNi-TiO2 still maintained high activity at high temperatures. This work contributes to clarifying the interaction mechanism between SCR and VOCs and enhancing the VOC removal efficiency. Full article
