With the rapid expansion of the electric vehicle (EV) market, optimizing the distribution of charging stations has attracted increasing attention. Unlike internal combustion engine vehicles, EVs are typically charged at the end of a trip rather than during transit. Therefore, analyzing EV users’ charging preferences based on their activity–travel patterns is essential. This study seeks to improve the operational efficiency and accessibility of EV charging stations in Lanzhou City by optimizing their spatial distribution. To achieve this, a novel multi-objective optimization model integrating NSGA-III and TOPSIS is proposed. The methodology consists of two key steps. First, the NSGA-III algorithm is applied to optimize three objective functions: minimizing construction costs, maximizing user satisfaction, and maximizing user convenience, thereby identifying charging station locations that address diverse needs. Second, the TOPSIS method is employed to rank and evaluate various location solutions, ultimately determining the final sitting strategy. The results show that the 232 locations obtained by the optimization model are reasonably distributed, with good operational efficiency and convenience. Most of them are distributed in urban centers and commercial areas, which is consistent with the usage scenarios of EV users. In addition, this study demonstrates the superiority in determining the distribution of charging station locations of the proposed method. In summary, this study determined the optimal distribution of 232 EV charging stations in Lanzhou City using multi-objective optimization and ranking methods. The results are of great significance for improving the operational efficiency and convenience of charging station location optimization and offer valuable insights for other cities in northwestern China in planning their charging infrastructure. The global automotive industry’ s rapid transformation has led to electric vehicles (EVs) capturing a significant market share as a sustainable transportation option. To sustain this growth, it is crucial to not only attract new users but also retain existing ones through repurchases. This decision is shaped by both vehicle attributes and users’ prior experiences. This study examines the impact of five dimensions of expected utility and experienced utility gap (including cost utility, functional utility, emotional utility, environmental utility, and social utility) on the repurchase intentions of 863 Chinese EV users. Discrete choice experiments were used to analyze these factors, considering both vehicle and personal attributes. The results show that when emotional utility exceeds expectations, users are more likely to repurchase pure electric and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles. However, if environmental and social utilities fall short of expectations, users may be discouraged from choosing these two vehicle types. In contrast, decisions regarding gasoline vehicles are primarily driven by economic and habitual factors, with minimal influence from emotional, environmental, or social utilities. Additionally, EV users show a preference for medium-sized models that offer shorter charging times and longer driving ranges. These findings offer insights for enhancing consumer acceptance, accelerating EV market penetration, and supporting the automotive industry’s sustainable development, thereby contributing to the achievement of environmental sustainability goals. The transport sector significantly contributes to global greenhouse gas emissions, making electromobility crucial in the race toward the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. In recent years, the increasing competition among manufacturers, the development of cheaper batteries, the ongoing policy support, and people’s greater environmental awareness have consistently increased electric vehicles (EVs) adoption. Nevertheless, EVs charging needs—highly influenced by EV drivers’ behavior uncertainty—challenge their integration into the power grid on a massive scale, leading to potential issues, such as overloading and grid instability. Smart charging strategies can mitigate these adverse effects by using information and communication technologies to optimize EV charging schedules in terms of power systems’ constraints, electricity prices, and users’ preferences, benefiting stakeholders by minimizing network losses, maximizing aggregators’ profit, and reducing users’ driving range anxiety. To this end, accurately forecasting EV charging demand is paramount. Traditionally used forecasting methods, such as model-driven and statistical ones, often rely on complex mathematical models, simulated data, or simplifying assumptions, failing to accurately represent current real-world EV charging profiles. Machine learning (ML) methods, which leverage real-life historical data to model complex, nonlinear, high-dimensional problems, have demonstrated superiority in this domain, becoming a hot research topic. In a scenario where EV technologies, charging infrastructure, data acquisition, and ML techniques constantly evolve, this paper conducts a systematized literature review (SLR) to understand the current landscape of ML-based EV charging demand forecasting, its emerging trends, and its future perspectives. The proposed SLR provides a well-structured synthesis of a large body of literature, categorizing approaches not only based on their ML-based approach, but also on the EV charging application. In addition, we focus on the most recent technological advances, exploring deep-learning architectures, spatial-temporal challenges, and cross-domain learning strategies. This offers an integrative perspective. On the one hand, it maps the state of the art, identifying a notable shift toward deep-learning approaches and an increasing interest in public EV charging stations. On the other hand, it uncovers underexplored methodological intersections that can be further exploited and research gaps that remain underaddressed, such as real-time data integration, long-term forecasting, and the development of adaptable models to different charging behaviors and locations. In this line, emerging trends combining recurrent and convolutional neural networks, and using relatively new ML techniques, especially transformers, and ML paradigms, such as transfer-, federated-, and meta-learning, have shown promising results for addressing spatial-temporality, time-scalability, and geographical-generalizability issues, paving the path for future research directions. With the rapid growth of user demand for large language models (LLMs) in their work, the application market is driving intense competition among large language model providers (LLMPs). Users have different preferences and psychological perceptions towards the charging models of different LLMPs. LLMPs with different intelligence levels must design pricing strategies based on diverse user characteristics. To investigate the impact of user heterogeneity on the strategic pricing of competing LLMPs, this paper establishes a competitive model with two providers, comprising a highly intelligent initial LLM provider and a follower provider. Both providers can independently decide to adopt either a subscription model or a pay-per-use model, resulting in four pricing mode combinations (dual subscription SS, subscription-pay-per-use SD, pay-per-use-subscription DS, dual pay-per-use DD). The study shows that when the pay-per-use model is adopted, the user’s psychological perception of the “tick-tock effect” reduces the provider’s service price and profit, as the perceived psychological cost lowers the user’s valuation of the product, thereby decreasing demand. Furthermore, we analyze the equilibrium strategies for pricing mode selection by the two providers. The results indicate that the subscription model is not always advantageous for providers. Both providers will only choose to adopt the subscription model when both user usage frequency and perceived psychological cost are high. Conversely, when both user usage frequency and perceived psychological cost are low, the two providers will not simultaneously adopt the subscription model. Interestingly, as the product intelligence levels of the two providers converge, their choices of pricing modes are also more inclined to diverge. These insights guide LLMPs to strategically adjust their pricing models based on user behavioral patterns to maximize profitability in the competitive AI market. Full article

As electric vehicle (EV) adoption accelerates, residential buildings—particularly multi-dwelling structures—face increasing challenges to electrical infrastructure, notably due to conservative sizing practices of electrical feeders based on maximum simultaneous demand. Current sizing methods assume all EVs charge simultaneously at maximum capacity, resulting in unnecessarily oversized and costly electrical installations. This study proposes an optimized methodology to estimate accurate coincidence factors, leveraging simulations of EV user charging behaviors in multi-dwelling residential environments. Charging scenarios considering different fleet sizes (1 to 70 EVs) were simulated under two distinct premises of charging: minimization of current allocation to achieve the desired battery state-of-charge and maximization of instantaneous power delivery. Results demonstrate significant deviations from conventional assumptions, with estimated coincidence factors decreasing non-linearly as fleet size increases. Specifically, applying the derived coincidence factors can reduce feeder section requirements by up to 86%, substantially lowering material costs. A fuzzy logic inference model is further developed to refine these estimates based on fleet characteristics and optimization preferences, providing a practical tool for infrastructure planners. The results were compared against other studies and real-life data. Finally, the proposed methodology thus contributes to more efficient, cost-effective design strategies for EV charging infrastructures in residential buildings. Full article

The rapid electrification of transportation and the proliferation of rooftop solar photovoltaics (PVs) in urban environments are reshaping the operational dynamics of power distribution networks. However, the inherent uncertainty in electric vehicle (EV) behavior—including arrival times, charging preferences, and state-of-charge—as well as spatially and temporally variable solar generation, presents a profound challenge to existing scheduling frameworks. This paper proposes a novel data-driven distributionally robust optimization (DDRO) framework for solar-powered EV charging coordination under spatiotemporal uncertainty. Leveraging empirical datasets of EV usage and solar irradiance from a smart city deployment, the framework constructs Wasserstein ambiguity sets around historical distributions, enabling worst-case-aware decision-making without requiring the assumption of probability laws. The problem is formulated as a two-stage optimization model. The first stage determines day-ahead charging schedules, solar utilization levels, and grid allocations across an urban-scale distribution feeder. The second stage models real-time recourse actions—such as dynamic curtailment or demand reshaping—after uncertainties are realized. Physical grid constraints are modeled using convexified LinDistFlow equations, while EV behavior is segmented into user classes with individualized uncertainty structures. The model is evaluated on a modified IEEE 123-bus feeder with 52 EV-PV nodes, using 15 min resolution over a 24 h horizon and 12 months of real-world data. Comparative results demonstrate that the proposed DDRO method reduces total operational costs by up to 15%, eliminates voltage violations entirely, and improves EV service satisfaction by more than 30% relative to deterministic and stochastic baselines. This work makes three primary contributions: it introduces a robust, tractable optimization architecture that captures spatiotemporal uncertainty using empirical Wasserstein sets; it integrates behavioral and physical modeling within a unified dispatch framework for urban energy-mobility systems; and it demonstrates the value of robust coordination in simultaneously improving grid resilience, renewable utilization, and EV user satisfaction. The results offer practical insights for city-scale planners seeking to enable the reliable and efficient electrification of mobility infrastructure under uncertainty. Full article

Before the onset of global warming concerns, the idea of manufacturing electric vehicles on a large scale was not widely considered. However, electric vehicles offer several advantages that have garnered attention. They are environmentally friendly, with simpler drive systems compared to traditional fossil fuel vehicles. Additionally, electric vehicles are highly efficient, with an efficiency of around 90%, in contrast to fossil fuel vehicles, which have an efficiency of about 30% to 35%. The higher energy efficiency of electric vehicles contributes to lower operational costs, which, alongside regulatory incentives and shifting consumer preferences, has increased their strategic importance for many vehicle manufacturers. In this paper, we present a thematic literature review on electric vehicles charging station location planning and scheduling. A systematic literature review across various data sources in the area yielded ninety five research papers for the final review. The research results were analyzed thematically, and three key directions were identified, namely charging station deployment and placement, optimal allocation and scheduling of EV parking lots, and V2G and smart charging systems as the top three themes. Each theme was further investigated to identify key topics, ongoing works, and future trends. It has been found that optimization methods followed by simulation and multi-criteria decision-making are most commonly used for EV infrastructure planning. A multistakeholder perspective is often adopted in these decisions to minimize costs and address the range anxiety of users. The future trend is towards the integration of renewable energy in smart grids, uncertainty modeling of user demand, and use of artificial intelligence for service quality improvement. Full article

The ability to effectively engineer robots with appropriate social behaviors that conform to acceptable social norms and with the potential to influence human behavior remains a challenging area in robotics. Given this, we sought to provide insights into “what can be considered a socially appropriate and effective behavior for robots charged with enforcing social compliance of various magnitudes”. To this end, we investigate how social robots can be equipped with context-inspired persuasive behaviors for human–robot interaction. For this, we conducted three separate studies. In the first, we explored how the android robot “ERICA” can be furnished with negative persuasive behaviors using a video-based within-subjects design with N = 50 participants. Through a video-based experiment employing a mixed-subjects design with N = 98 participants, we investigated how the context of norm violation and individual user traits affected perceptions of the robot’s persuasive behaviors in the second study. Lastly, we investigated the effect of the robot’s appearance on the perception of its persuasive behaviors, considering two humanoids (ERICA and CommU) through a within-subjects design with N = 100 participants. Findings from these studies generally revealed that the robot could be equipped with appropriate and effective context-sensitive persuasive behaviors for human–robot interaction. Specifically, the more assertive behaviors (displeasure and anger) of the agent were found to be effective (p < 0.01) as a response to a situation of repeated violation after an initial positive persuasion. Additionally, the appropriateness of these behaviors was found to be influenced by the severity of the violation. Specifically, negative behaviors were preferred for persuasion in situations where the violation affects other people (p < 0.01), as in the COVID-19 adherence and smoking prohibition scenarios. Our results also revealed that the preference for the negative behaviors of the robots varied with users’ traits, specifically compliance awareness (CA), agreeableness (AG), and the robot’s embodiment. The current findings provide insights into how social agents can be equipped with appropriate and effective context-aware persuasive behaviors. It also suggests the relevance of a cognitive-based approach in designing social agents, particularly those deployed in sensitive social contexts. Full article

This study presents a novel predictive framework for estimating electric vehicle (EV) charging demand in smart cities, contributing to the advancement of data-driven infrastructure planning through behavioural and spatial data analysis. Motivated by the accelerating regional demand accompanying EV adoption, this work introduces HCB-Net: a hybrid deep learning model that combines Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) for spatial feature extraction with Extreme Gradient Boosting (XGBoost) for robust regression. The framework is trained on user-level survey data from two demographically distinct UK regions, the West Midlands and the North East, incorporating user demographics, commute distance, charging frequency, and home/public charging preferences. HCB-Net achieved superior predictive performance, with a Root Mean Squared Error (RMSE) of 0.1490 and an R2 score of 0.3996. Compared to the best-performing traditional model (Linear Regression, R2=0.3520), HCB-Net improved predictive accuracy by 13.5% in terms of R2, and outperformed other deep learning models such as LSTM (R2=0.3756) and GRU (R2=0.6276), which failed to capture spatial patterns effectively. The hybrid model also reduced RMSE by approximately 23% compared to the standalone CNN (RMSE = 0.1666). While the moderate R2 indicates scope for further refinement, these results demonstrate that meaningful and interpretable demand forecasts can be generated from survey-based behavioural data, even in the absence of high-resolution temporal inputs. The model contributes a lightweight and scalable forecasting tool suitable for early-stage smart city planning in contexts where telemetry data are limited, thereby advancing the practical capabilities of EV infrastructure forecasting. Efficient scheduling of Energy Storage Systems (ESS) within microgrids has emerged as a critical issue to ensure energy cost reduction, peak shaving, and battery health management. For ESS scheduling, both single-agent and multi-agent deep reinforcement learning (DRL) approaches have been explored. However, the former has suffered from scalability to include multiple objectives while the latter lacks comprehensive consideration of diverse user objectives. To defeat the above issues, in this paper, we propose a new DRL-based scheduling algorithm using a multi-agent proximal policy optimization (MAPPO) framework that is combined with Pareto optimization. The proposed model employs two independent agents: one is to minimize electricity costs and the other does charge/discharge switching frequency to account for battery degradation. The candidate actions generated by the agents are evaluated through Pareto dominance, and the final action is selected via scalarization-reflecting operator-defined preferences. The simulation experiments were conducted using real industrial building load and photovoltaic (PV) generation data under realistic South Korean electricity tariff structures. The comparative evaluations against baseline DRL algorithms (TD3, SAC, PPO) demonstrate that the proposed MAPPO method significantly reduces electricity costs while minimizing battery-switching events. Furthermore, the results highlight that the proposed method achieves a balanced improvement in both economic efficiency and battery longevity, making it highly applicable to real-world dynamic microgrid environments. Specifically, the proposed MAPPO-based scheduling achieved a total electricity cost reduction of 14.68% compared to the No-ESS case and achieved 3.56% greater cost savings than other baseline reinforcement learning algorithms. The differential toll policy has emerged as an effective method for regulating expressway traffic flow and has positively impacted the efficiency of vehicular movement, as well as balanced the spatial and temporal distribution of the road network. However, the acceptance of differentiated charging policies and the range of rates associated with these policies warrant further investigation. This study employs both revealed preference (RP) and stated preference (SP) survey methods to assess users’ willingness to accept the current differentiated toll scheme and to analyze the proportion of users opting for alternative travel routes and their behavioral characteristics in simulated scenarios. Additionally, we construct a Structural Equation Model-Latent Class Logistics (SEM-LCL) to explore the mechanisms influencing differentiated toll road alternative travel choices while considering user heterogeneity. The findings indicate that different tolling strategies and discount rates attract users variably. The existing differentiated tolling scheme—based on road sections, time periods, and payment methods—significantly affects users’ choices of alternative routes, with the impact of tolling based on vehicle type being especially pronounced for large trucks. The user population is heterogeneous and can be categorized into three distinct groups: rate-sensitive, information-promoting, and conservative-rejecting. Furthermore, the willingness to consider alternative travel routes is significantly influenced by factors such as gender, age, driving experience, vehicle type, travel time, travel distance, payment method, and past differential toll experiences. As the adoption of electric vehicles (EVs) rapidly increases, the expansion of charging infrastructure has become a critical issue. Unlike internal combustion engine vehicles, EV charging is sensitive to factors such as the time and location for charging, depending on the charging speed and capacity of the battery. Therefore, recommending an appropriate charging station that comprehensively considers not only the user’s preference but also the charging time, waiting time, charging fee rates, and power supply status is crucial for the user’s convenience. Currently, charging station recommendation services suggest suitable charging stations near a designated location and provide information on charging capacity, fee rates, and availability of chargers. Furthermore, research is being conducted on EV charging station recommendations that take into account various charging environments, such as power grid and renewable energy conditions. To solve these optimization problems, a large amount of information about the user’s history and conditions is required. In this paper, we propose a real-time charging station recommendation method based on minimal and simple current information while driving to the destination. We first propose a preference objective function that considers the factors of distance, time, and fees, and then analyze the recommendation results based on both synthetic and real-world charging environments. We also observe the recommendation results for different combinations of the weights for these factors. If we set all the weights equally, we can obtain appropriate recommendations for charging stations that reflect driving distance, trip time, and charging fees in a balanced way. On the other hand, as the number of charging stations in a given area increases, it has been found that gradually increasing the weighting of charging fees is necessary to alleviate the phenomenon of rising fee rates and provide balanced recommendations. Electric vehicle (EV) users have the flexibility to fulfill their charging needs using either high-speed charging stations or innovative on-road wireless charging systems, ensuring uninterrupted travel to their destinations. These options present a spectrum of benefits, enhancing convenience and efficiency. The adoption of on-road wireless charging as a complementary method influences both the timing and extent of demand at fast-charging stations. This study introduces a comprehensive probabilistic framework to analyze EV arrival rates at fast-charging facilities, incorporating the impact of on-road wireless charging availability. The proposed model utilizes transportation data, including patterns from the US National Household Travel Survey (NHTS), to predict the specific times when EVs would need fast charging. To account for uncertainties in EV user decisions concerning charging preferences, a Monte Carlo simulation (MCS) approach is employed, ensuring a comprehensive analysis of charging behaviors and their potential impact on charging stations. A queuing model is developed to estimate the charging demand for numerous electric vehicles at a charging station, considering both scenarios: on-road EV wireless charging and relying exclusively on fast-charging stations. This study includes an analysis of a case and its simulation results based on a 32-bus distribution system and data from the US National Household Travel Survey (NHTS). The results indicate that integrating on-road EV wireless charging as complementary to fast charging significantly reduces the peak load at the charging station. Additionally, considering the on-road EV wireless charging system, the peak load of the station no longer aligns with the peak load of the power grid, resulting in improved power system capacity and deferred system upgrades. The transport sector is responsible for about 60% of emissions in the atmosphere due to the exhaust-polluting gases of internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles. An effective solution to this issue is the electrification of the transport means, which can significantly reduce pollution, especially in urban areas. Apart from the necessary technological advancements that must improve the battery performances, the diffusion of electric vehicles (EVs) must be further supported and facilitated by new dedicated services and tools for electric vehicle users and operators aiming at improving the travel and charging experience. To this goal, this paper proposes new models based on Timed Colored Petri Nets (TCPN) to simulate and manage the charge demand of the EV fleet. At first, the proposed tool must take into account the charging requests from different EV drivers with different charging need located in different geographical areas. This is possible by knowing input data such as EV current location, battery data, charge points (CPs) availability, and compatibility. In particular, EV drivers are simulated when finding and booking the preferred charge option according to the available infrastructure in the area of interest and the CPs tariff and power rate. The proposed TCPN is designed to model the multi-user charging demand in specific geographic areas, and it is evaluated in several scenarios of a case study to measure its performance in serving multiple EV users. Electric vehicles (EVs) are gaining significant attention as an environmentally friendly transportation solution. However, limitations in battery technology continue to restrict EV range and charging speed, resulting in range anxiety, which hampers widespread adoption. While there has been increasing research on EV route optimization, personalized path planning that caters to individual user needs remains underexplored. To bridge this gap, we propose the electric vehicle charging route planning based on user requirements (EVCRP-UR) problem, which aims to integrate user preferences and multiple constraints. Our approach utilizes topology optimization to reduce computational complexity and improve path planning efficiency. Furthermore, we introduce an improved ant colony optimization (IACO) algorithm incorporating novel heuristic functions and refined probability distribution models to select optimal paths and charging stations. To further enhance charging strategies, we develop a discrete electricity dynamic programming (DE-DP) algorithm to determine charging times at efficiently chosen stations. By combining these methods, the proposed IACO algorithm leverages the strengths of each approach, overcoming their individual limitations and delivering superior performance in EV routing and charging optimization.
