The changing global climate and rapid urbanization make extreme rainstorm events frequent, and the flood disaster caused by rainstorm has become a prominent problem of urban public safety in China, which severely restricts the healthy and sustainable development of social economy. The weight calculation method of traditional risk assessment model is single and ignores the difference of multi-dimensional information space involved in risk analysis. This study constructs a flood risk assessment model by incorporating natural, social, and economic factors into an indicator system structured around four dimensions: hazard, exposure, vulnerability, and disaster prevention and mitigation capacity. A combination of the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) and the entropy weight method is employed to optimize both subjective and objective weights. Taking the central urban area of Wuhan with a high flood risk as an example, based on the risk assessment values, spatial autocorrelation analysis, cluster analysis, outlier analysis, and hotspot analysis are applied to explore the spatial clustering characteristics of risks. The results show that the overall assessment level of flood hazard in central urban area of Wuhan is medium, the overall assessment level of exposure and vulnerability is low, and the overall disaster prevention and mitigation capability is medium. The overall flood risk levels in Wuchang and Jianghan are the highest, while some areas in Qingshan and Hanyang have the lowest levels. The spatial characteristics of each dimension evaluation index show obvious autocorrelation and spatial differentiation. These findings aim to provide valuable suggestions and references for reducing urban disaster risks and achieving sustainable urban development. Full article

Wildfire regimes are closely linked to changes in landscape structure, yet the influence of accelerated land use transitions on fire activity remains poorly understood, particularly in rapidly transforming regions like central Chile. Although land use change has been extensively documented in the country, the specific role of the speed, extent, and spatial configuration of these transitions in shaping fire dynamics requires further investigation. To address this gap, we examined how landscape transitions influence fire frequency in central Chile, a region experiencing rapid land use change and heightened fire activity. Using multi-temporal remote sensing data, we quantified land use transitions, calculated landscape metrics to describe their spatial characteristics, and applied intensity analysis to assess their relationship with fire frequency changes. Our results show that accelerated landscape transitions significantly increased fire frequency, particularly in areas affected by forest plantation rotations, new forest establishment, and urban expansion, with changes exceeding uniform intensity expectations. Regional variations were evident: In the more densely populated northern areas, increased fire frequency was primarily linked to urban development and deforestation, while in the more rural southern regions, forest plantation cycles played a dominant role. Areas with a high number of large forest patches were especially prone to fire frequency increases. These findings demonstrate that both the speed and spatial configuration of landscape transitions are critical drivers of wildfire activity. By identifying the specific land use changes and landscape characteristics that amplify fire risks, this study provides valuable knowledge to inform fire risk reduction, landscape management, and urban planning in Chile and other fire-prone regions undergoing rapid transformation. Excess Commuting in Rural Minnesota: Ethnic and Industry Disparities

Research on commuting patterns has mainly focused on urban and metropolitan areas, and such studies are not typically applied to rural and small-town regions, where workers often face longer commutes due to limited job opportunities and inadequate public transportation. By using the Census Transportation Planning Package (CTPP) data, this research fills that gap by analyzing commuting behavior by ethnic group and industry in south-central Minnesota, which is a predominantly rural area of 13 counties in the United States. The results show that both white and minority groups in District 7 experienced an increase in excess commuting from 2006 to 2016, with the minority group in Nobles County showing a significantly higher rise. Analysis by industry reveals that excess commuting in the leisure and hospitality sector (including arts, entertainment, and food services) in Nobles County increased five-fold during this time, indicating a severe spatial mismatch between jobs and affordable housing. In contrast, manufacturing experienced a decline of 50%, possibly indicating better commuting efficiency or a loss of manufacturing jobs. These findings can help city and transportation planners conduct an in-depth analysis of rural-to-urban commuting patterns and develop potential solutions to improve rural transportation infrastructure and accessibility, such as promoting telecommuting and hybrid work options, expanding shuttle routes, and adding more on-demand transit services in rural areas. Urban Carbon Metabolism Optimization Based on a Source–Sink–Flow Framework at the Functional Zone Scale

Carbon flow tracking and spatial pattern optimization at the scale of urban functional zones are key scientific challenges in achieving carbon neutrality. However, due to the complexity of carbon metabolism processes within urban functional zones, related studies remain limited. To address these scientific challenges, this study, based on the “source–sink–flow” ecosystem services framework, develops an integrated analytical approach at the scale of urban functional zones. The carbon balance is quantified using the CASA model in combination with multi-source data. A network model is employed to trace carbon flow pathways, identify critical nodes and interruption points, and optimize the urban spatial pattern through a low-carbon land use structure model. The research results indicate that the overall carbon balance in Hangzhou exhibits a spatial pattern of “deficit in the center and surplus in the periphery.” The main urban area shows a significant carbon deficit and relatively poor connectivity in the carbon flow network. Carbon sequestration services primarily flow from peripheral areas (such as Fuyang and Yuhang) with green spaces and agricultural functional zones toward high-emission residential–commercial and commercial–public functional zones in the central area. However, due to the interruption of multiple carbon flow paths, the overall carbon flow transmission capacity is significantly constrained. Through spatial optimization, some carbon deficit nodes were successfully converted into carbon surplus nodes, and disrupted carbon flow edges were repaired, particularly in the main urban area, where 369 carbon flow edges were restored, resulting in a significant improvement in the overall transmission efficiency of the carbon flow network. The carbon flow visualization and spatial optimization methods proposed in this paper provide a new perspective for urban carbon metabolism analysis and offer theoretical support for low-carbon city planning practices. Urban rail transit networks’ rapid expansions have led to increasing intersections between existing and new lines, particularly in dense urban areas where new stations must underpass existing infrastructure at zero distance. Deformation controls during construction are critical for maintaining the operational safety of existing stations, especially in soft soil conditions where construction-induced settlement poses significant risks to structural integrity. This study systematically investigates the influence mechanisms of different construction schemes on base plate deformation when an open-top UBIT (underground bundle composite pipe integrated by transverse pre-stressing) underpasses existing stations. Through precise numerical simulation using PLAXIS 3D, the research comparatively analyzed the effects of 12 pipe jacking sequences, 3 pre-stress levels (1116 MPa, 1395 MPa, 1674 MPa), and 3 soil chamber excavation schemes, revealing the mechanisms between the deformation evolution and soil unloading effects. The continuous jacking strategy of adjacent pipes forms an efficient support structure, limiting maximum settlement to 5.2 mm. Medium pre-stress level (1395 MPa) produces a balanced deformation pattern that optimizes structural performance, while excavating side chambers before the central chamber effectively utilizes soil unloading effects, achieving controlled settlement distribution with maximum values of −7.2 mm. The optimal construction combination demonstrates effective deformation control, ensuring the operational safety of existing station structures. These findings enable safer and more efficient urban underpassing construction. Full article

Coupled grey and green infrastructure (CGGI) offers a promising pathway toward sustainable stormwater management in historic urban environments. This study compares CGGI and conventional grey infrastructure (GREI)-only strategies across four degrees of layout centralization (0%, 33.3%, 66.7%, and 100%) in the Quanzhou West Street Historic Reserve, China. Using a multi-objective optimization framework integrating SWMM simulations, life-cycle cost (LCC) modeling, and resilience metrics, we found that the decentralized CGGI layouts reduced the total LCC by up to 29.6% and required 60.7% less green infrastructure (GI) area than centralized schemes. Under nine extreme rainfall scenarios, the GREI-only systems showed slightly higher technical resilience (Tech-R: max 99.6%) than CGGI (Tech-R: max 99.1%). However, the CGGI systems outperformed GREI in operational resilience (Oper-R), reducing overflow volume by up to 22.6% under 50% network failure. These findings demonstrate that decentralized CGGI provides a more resilient and cost-effective drainage solution, well-suited for heritage districts with spatial and cultural constraints. Understanding changes in land use structures under multiple scenarios and their impacts on carbon storage is essential for revealing the evolution of regional development patterns and the underlying mechanisms of carbon cycle dynamics. This study adopted an integrated PLUS-InVEST modeling framework to analyze and predict changes in carbon storage in the Central Plains Urban Agglomeration (CPUA) under different scenarios for the years 2030 and 2060. The results showed the following: (1) From 2000 to 2020, the areas of forest land, water bodies, and construction land expanded, while the areas of cropland, grassland, and barren land decreased. Over this 20-year period, carbon storage showed a declining trend, decreasing from 2390.07 × 106 t in 2000 to 2372.19 × 106 t in 2020. (2) In both 2030 and 2060, cropland remained the primary land use type in the CPUA. Overall, carbon storage in the CPUA was higher in the southwestern area and decreased in the central and eastern parts, which was mainly related to the land use distribution pattern in the CPUA. (3) Carbon storage under the EP (ecological protection) and CP (cropland protection) scenarios was significantly higher than under the other two scenarios, and in 2030, carbon storage under the CP and EP scenarios exceeded that in 2020, while the UD (urban development) scenario had the lowest total carbon storage. This indicated that the expansion of construction land was detrimental to carbon storage enhancement, underscoring the importance of implementing ecological protection strategies. In summary, the results of this study quantitatively reflected the changes in carbon storage in the CPUA under different future development scenarios, providing a reference for formulating regional development strategies. The compound effects of extreme climate change and intensive urban development have led to more frequent urban inundation, highlighting the urgent need for the fine-scale evaluation of stormwater drainage system performance in high-density urban built-up areas. A typical basin, located in Shenzhen, was selected, and a pipe–river coupled SWMM was developed and calibrated via a genetic algorithm to simulate the storm drainage system. Design storm scenario analyses revealed that regional inundation occurred in the central area of the basin and the enclosed culvert sections of the midstream river, even under a 0.5-year recurrence period, while the downstream open river channels maintained a substantial drainage capacity under a 200-year rainfall event. To systematically identify bottleneck zones, two novel metrics, namely, the node cumulative inundation volume and the conduit cumulative inundation length, were proposed to quantify the local inundation severity and spatial interactions across the drainage network. Two critical bottleneck zones were selected, and strategic improvement via the cross-sectional expansion of pipes and river culverts significantly enhanced the drainage efficiency. This study provides a practical case study and transferable technical framework for integrating hydraulic modeling, spatial analytics, and targeted infrastructure upgrades to enhance the resilience of drainage systems in high-density urban environments, offering an actionable framework for sustainable urban stormwater drainage system management. This study investigated the nuanced influence of urban morphology on the thermal performance of nine mass housing blocks (21–26, 28–30) in New Belgrade’s Central Zone. These blocks, showcasing diverse structures, provided a robust basis for evaluating the design parameters. ENVI-met simulations were used to assess two scenarios: an “asphalt-only” environment, isolating the urban structure’s impact, and a “real-world” scenario, including green infrastructure (GI). Overall, the findings emphasize that while GI offers mitigation, the inherent urban built structure fundamentally determines thermal outcomes. An urban block’s thermal performance, it turns out, is a complex interplay between morphological factors and local climate. Crucially, simple metrics like Green Area Percentage (GAP) and Building Coverage Ratio (BCR) proved unreliable predictors of thermal performance. This highlights the critical need for urban planning regulations to evolve beyond basic surface indicators and embrace sophisticated, context-sensitive design principles for effective heat mitigation. Optimal performance arises from morphologies that actively manage heat accumulation and facilitate its dissipation, a characteristic exemplified by Block 22’s integrated design. However, even the best-performing Block 22 remains warmer compared to denser central areas, suggesting that urban densification can be a strategy for heat mitigation. Given New Belgrade’s blocks are protected heritage, targeted GI reinforcements remain the only viable approach for improving the outdoor thermal comfort. Full article

Forests are considered one of the most valuable natural areas in metropolitan region landscapes. Considering the sensitivity and ecosystem services provided by trees, the definition of urban forest ecosystems is nowadays based on a comprehensive understanding of the entire urban ecosystem. The effective capturing of particulate matter is one of the ecosystem services provided by urban forests. These ecosystems function as efficient biological filters. Plants accumulate pollutants passively via their leaves. Therefore, another ecosystem service provided by city forests could be the use of tree organs as bioindicators of pollution. This paper aims to estimate differences in trace metal pollution between the wooded urban areas of Vienna and Krakow using leaves of evergreen and deciduous trees as biomonitors. An additional objective of the research was to assess the ability of the applied tree species to act as biomonitors. Plant samples of five species—Norway spruce, Scots pine, European larch, common white birch, and common beech—were collected within both areas, in seven locations: four in the “Wienerwald” Vienna forest (Austria) and three in the “Las Wolski” forest in Krakow (Poland). Concentrations of Cr, Cu, Cd, Pb, and Zn in plant material were determined. Biomonitoring studies with deciduous and coniferous tree leaves showed statistically higher heavy metal contamination in the “Las Wolski” forest compared to the “Wienerwald” forest. Based on the conducted analyses and the literature study, it can be concluded that among the analyzed tree species, only two: European beech and common white birch can be considered potential indicators in environmental studies. These species appear to be suitable bioindicators, as both are widespread in urban woodlands of Central Europe and have shown the highest accumulation levels of trace metals. Full article

Urban tourism has evolved into a complex adaptive system, where unregulated expansion disrupts the ecological balance and intensifies resource stress. Understanding the dynamic evolution and resilience mechanisms of the tourism ecological health network (TEHN) is essential for supporting sustainable urban tourism as a coupled human–natural system. Using Shanghai as a case study, we applied the “vigor–organization–resilience–services” (VORS) framework to evaluate ecosystem health, which served as a constraint for constructing the TEHN, using the minimum cumulative resistance (MCR) model for the period from 2001 to 2023. A resilience framework integrating structural and functional dimensions was further developed to assess spatiotemporal evolution and guide targeted enhancement strategies. The results indicated that as ecosystem health degraded, particularly in peripheral areas, the urban TEHN in Shanghai shifted from a dispersed to a centralized structure, with limited connectivity in the periphery. The resilience of the TEHN continued to grow, with structural resilience remaining at a high level, while functional resilience still required enhancement. Specifically, the low integration and limited choice between the tourism network and the transportation system hindered tourists from selecting routes with higher ecosystem health indices. Enhancing functional resilience, while sustaining structural resilience, is essential for transforming the TEHN into a multi-centered, multi-level system that promotes efficient connectivity, ecological sustainability, and long-term adaptability. The results contribute to a systems-level understanding of tourism–ecology interactions and support the development of adaptive strategies for balancing network efficiency and environmental integrity. Urban parks play an essential role in mitigating the urban heat island (UHI) effect driven by urbanization. A rigorous understanding of the cooling effects of urban parks can support urban planning efforts aimed at mitigating the UHI effect and enhancing urban sustainability. However, previous research has primarily focused on the maximum cooling impact, often overlooking the accumulative effects arising from spatial continuity. The present study fills this gap by investigating 74 urban parks located in the central area of Jinan and constructing a comprehensive cooling evaluation framework through two dimensions: maximum impact (Park Cooling Area, PCA; Park Cooling Efficiency, PCE) and cumulative impact (Park Cooling Intensity, PCI; Park Cooling Gradient, PCG). We further systematically examined the influence of park attributes and the surrounding urban structures on these metrics. The findings indicate that urban parks, as a whole, significantly contribute to lowering the ambient temperatures in their vicinity: 62.3% are located in surface temperature cold spots, reducing ambient temperatures by up to 7.77 °C. However, cooling intensity, range, and efficiency vary significantly across parks, with an average PCI of 0.0280, PCG of 0.99 °C, PCA of 46.00 ha, and PCE of 5.34. For maximum impact, PCA is jointly determined by park area, boundary length, and shape complexity, while smaller parks generally exhibit higher PCE—reflecting diminished cooling efficiency at excessive scales. For cumulative impact, building density and spatial enclosure degree surrounding parks critically regulate PCI and PCG by influencing cool-air aggregation and diffusion. Based on these findings, this study classified urban parks according to their cooling characteristics, clarified the functional differences among different park types, and proposed targeted recommendations. E-commerce growth has reshaped consumer behavior and retail services, driving parcel demand and challenging last-mile logistics. Existing research predominantly relies on survey data and global regression models that overlook intra-urban spatial heterogeneity in shopping behaviors. This study bridges this gap by analyzing e-commerce demand’s spatial distribution from a retail service perspective, identifying key drivers, and evaluating implications for omnichannel strategies and logistics. Utilizing waybill big data, spatial analysis, and multiscale geographically weighted regression, we reveal: (1) High-density e-commerce demand areas are predominantly located in central districts, whereas peripheral regions exhibit statistically lower volumes. The spatial distribution pattern of e-commerce demand aligns with the urban development spatial structure. (2) Factors such as population density and education levels significantly influence e-commerce demand. (3) Convenience stores play a dual role as retail service providers and parcel collection points, reinforcing their importance in shaping consumer accessibility and service efficiency, particularly in underserved urban areas. (4) Supermarkets exert a substitution effect on online shopping by offering immediate product availability, highlighting their role in shaping consumer purchasing preferences and retail service strategies. These findings contribute to retail and consumer services research by demonstrating how spatial e-commerce demand patterns reflect consumer shopping preferences, the role of omnichannel retail strategies, and the competitive dynamics between e-commerce and physical retail formats. As global climate change accelerates, the urban heat island (UHI) phenomenon has become increasingly pronounced, posing significant challenges to urban energy balance, atmospheric processes, and public health. This study used the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model to dynamically downscale two CMIP6 scenarios—moderate forcing (SSP245) and high forcing (SSP585)—focusing on Zhengzhou, a rapidly urbanizing city in central China. High-resolution simulations captured fine-scale intra-urban temperature patterns and analyze the spatial and seasonal variations in UHI intensity in 2030 and 2060. The results demonstrated significant seasonal variations in UHI effects in Zhengzhou for both 2030 and 2060 under SSP245 and SSP585 scenarios, with the most pronounced warming in summer. Notably, under the SSP245 scenario, elevated autumn temperatures in suburban areas reduced the urban–rural temperature gradient, while intensified rural cooling during winter enhanced the UHI effect. These findings underscore the importance of integrating high-resolution climate modeling into urban planning and developing targeted adaptation strategies based on future UHI patterns to address climate challenges. To date, few studies have been published for cities in Germany that take into account climate change and changing hydrologic patterns due to increases in building density. This study investigates the efficiency of LID for past and future climate in the polycentric agglomeration area Frankfurt, Main (Central Germany) using observed and projected climate (model) data for a standard reference period (1961–1990) and a high emission scenario (RCP 8.5) as well as a climate protection scenario (RCP 2.6), under 40 to 75 percent building density. LID elements included green roofs, permeable pavement and bioretention cells. SWMM5 was used as model for simulation purposes. A holistic evaluation of simulation results showed that effectiveness increases incrementally with LID implementation percentage and inverse to building density if implemented onto at least 50 percent of available impervious area. Building density had a higher adverse effect on LID efficiency than climate change. The results contribute to the understanding of localized effects of climate change and the implementation of adaption strategies to that end. The results of this study can be helpful for the scientific community regarding future investigations of LID implementation efficiency in dense residential areas and used by local governments to provide suggestions for urban water balance revaluation.
