This study investigates the interplay between infill structure and surface texture in Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM)-printed polymer specimens and their combined influence on tribological and mechanical performance. Unlike previous works that focus on single-variable analysis, this work offers a comparative evaluation of Shore D hardness and coefficient of friction (COF) for PLA and Iglidur materials, incorporating diverse infill patterns. The results reveal that specific combinations (e.g., grid infill with 90% density) optimize hardness and minimize friction, offering practical insights for design optimization in functional parts. Our aim is to provide design insights for enhanced wear resistance and hardness through tailored structural configurations. Carbon Fiber-reinforced PLA (PLA CF), aramid fiber-reinforced Acrylonitrile Styrene Acrylate (Kevlar), and Iglidur I180-BL tribofilament. Disc specimens were fabricated with gyroid infill densities ranging from 10% to 100%. Experimental methodologies included Ball-on-Disc tests conducted under dry sliding conditions (5 N normal load, 150 mm/s sliding speed) to assess friction and wear characteristics. These tribological evaluations were complemented by profilometric and microscopic analyses and Shore D hardness testing. The results show that Iglidur I180-BL achieved the lowest friction coefficients (0.141–0.190) and negligible wear, while PLA specimens with 90% infill demonstrated a polishing-type wear with minimal material loss and a friction coefficient (COF) of ~0.108. In contrast, PLA CF and Kevlar exhibited higher wear depths (up to 154 µm for Kevlar) and abrasive mechanisms due to fiber detachment. Shore hardness values increased with infill density, with PLA reaching a maximum of 82.7 Shore D. These findings highlight the critical interplay between infill architecture and surface patterning and offer actionable guidelines for the functional design of durable FDM components in load-bearing or sliding applications. Tribological performance is critical for the longevity and efficiency of machined components in industries such as aerospace, automotive, and biomedical. This study investigates whether electrical discharge machining recast layers can serve as a cost-effective and time-efficient alternative to conventional tungsten inert gas cladding coatings for enhancing surface properties. The samples were prepared using electrical discharge machining and tungsten inert gas cladding. For electrical discharge machining, various combinations of electrical and non-electrical parameters were applied using Taguchi’s L18 orthogonal array. Similarly, tungsten inert gas cladding coatings were prepared using a suitable combination of current, voltage, powder size, and speed. The samples were characterized using, scanning electron microscopy, optical microscopy, microhardness testing, tribological testing, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction analysis and profilometry. The electrical discharge machining recast layers exhibited superior tribological performance compared to tungsten inert gas cladding coatings. This improvement is attributed to the formation of carbides, such as TiC and Ti6C3.75. The coefficient of friction and specific wear rate were reduced by 11.11% and 1.57%, respectively, while microhardness increased by 10.93%. Abrasive wear was identified as the predominant wear mechanism. This study systematically compares electrical discharge machining recast layers with tungsten inert gas cladding coatings. The findings suggest that optimized electrical discharge machining recast layers can serve as effective coatings, offering cost and time savings. Full article

This article presents the results of the tribological performance of 20MnCr5 (1.7147) tool steel countersamples produced by Direct Metal Laser Sintering (DMLS), as a potential material for inserts or working layers of sheet metal forming tools. Tribological tests were performed using a roller-block tribotester. The samples were sheet metals made of materials with significantly different properties: Inconel 625, titanium-stabilised stainless steel 321, EN AW-6061 T0 aluminium alloy, and pure copper. The samples and countersamples were analysed in terms of their wear resistance, coefficient of friction (COF), changes in friction force during testing, and surface morphology after tribological contact under dry friction conditions. The tests were performed on DMLSed countersamples in the as-received state. The largest gain of countersample mass was observed for the 20MnCr5/EN AW-6061 T0 friction pair. The sample mass loss in this combination was also the largest, amounting to 19.96% of the initial mass. On the other hand, in the 20MnCr5/Inconel 625 friction pair, no significant changes in the mass of materials were recorded. For the Inconel 625 sample, a mass loss of 0.04% was observed. The basic wear mechanism of the samples was identified as abrasive wear. The highest friction forces were observed in the 20MnCr5/Cu friction pair (COF = 0.913) and 20MnCr5/EN AW-6061 T0 friction pair (COF = 1.234). The other two samples (Inconel 625, 321 steel) showed a very stable value of the friction force during the roller-block test resulting in a COF between 0.194 and 0.213. Based on the changes in friction force, COFs, and mass changes in friction pair components during wear tests, it can be concluded that potential tools in the form of inserts or working layers manufactured using 3D printing technology, the DMLS method, without additional surface treatment can be successfully used for forming sheets of 321 steel and Inconel 625. Background: Attachments are essential components in clear aligner therapy, enhancing retention and improving the predictability of tooth movements. Mechanical and wear properties of the composite resins used for attachment reproduction are critical to maintaining their integrity and shape over time. This study aimed to evaluate and compare the mechanical properties, thermal behavior, and wear performance of the hybrid composite Aligner Connect (AC) and the flowable resin (Connect Flow, CF). Methods: Twenty samples (ten AC and ten CF) were reproduced. All specimens underwent differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), combustion analysis, flat instrumented indentation, compression stress relaxation tests, and tribological analysis. A 3D wear profile reconstruction was performed to assess wear surfaces. Results: DSC and combustion analyses revealed distinct thermal transitions, with CF showing significantly lower Tg values (103.8 °C/81.4 °C) than AC (110.8 °C/89.6 °C) and lower residual mass after combustion (23% vs. 61%), reflecting reduced filler content and greater polymer mobility. AC exhibited superior mechanical properties, with higher maximum load (585.9 ± 22.36 N) and elastic modulus (231.5 ± 9.1 MPa) than CF (290.2 ± 5.52 N; 156 ± 10.5 MPa). Stress relaxation decrease was less pronounced in AC (18 ± 4%) than in CF (20 ± 4%). AC also showed a significantly higher friction coefficient (0.62 ± 0.060) than CF (0.55 ± 0.095), along with greater wear volume (0.012 ± 0.0055 mm3 vs. 0.0070 ± 0.0083 mm3) and maximum depth (36.88 ± 3.642 µm vs. 17.91 ± 3.387 µm). Surface roughness before wear was higher for AC (Ra, 0.577 ± 0.035 µm; Rt, 4.369 ± 0.521 µm) than for CF (Ra, 0.337 ± 0.070 µm; Rt, 2.862 ± 0.549 µm). After wear tests, roughness values converged (Ra, 0.247 ± 0.036 µm for AC; Ra, 0.236 ± 0.019 µm for CF) indicating smoothened and similar surfaces for both composites. Conclusions: The hybrid nanocomposite demonstrated greater properties in terms of stiffness, load-bearing capacity, and structural integrity when compared with flowable resin. Its use may ensure more durable attachment integrity and improved aligner–tooth interface performance over time. Full article

The traction behavior in cryogenic solid-lubricated ball bearings (CSLBBs) used in liquid rocket engines (LREs) affects not only the dynamic response of the bearing but also the lubricity and wear characteristics of the solid lubrication coating. The traction coefficient between the ball and raceway depends on factors such as contact material, relative sliding velocity, and contact pressure. However, existing traction curve models for CSLBBs typically consider only one or two of these factors, limiting the accuracy and applicability of theoretical predictions. In this study, a novel traction model for CSLBBs is proposed, which incorporates the combined effects of contact material, relative sliding velocity, and contact pressure. Based on this model, a tribo-dynamic framework is developed to investigate the tribological and dynamic behavior of CSLBBs. The model is validated through both theoretical analysis and experimental data. Results show that the inclusion of solid lubricant effects significantly alters the relative sliding and frictional forces between the rolling elements and the raceway. These changes in turn influence the impact dynamics between the rolling elements and the cage, leading to notable variations in the bearing’s vibrational response. The findings may offer valuable insights for the wear resistance and vibration reduction design of CSLBBs. Full article

The article presents a comprehensive review of key issues and challenges related to enhancing the durability of hot forging tools. It discusses modern strategies aimed at increasing tool life, including modifications to tool materials, heat treatment, surface engineering, tool and die design, die geometry, tribological conditions, and lubrication. The review is based on extensive literature data, including recent publications and the authors’ own research, which has been implemented under industrial conditions at the modern forging facility in Forge Plant “Glinik” (Poland). The study introduces original design and technological solutions, such as an innovative concept for manufacturing forging dies from alloy structural steels with welded impressions, replacing traditional hot-work tool steel dies. It also proposes a zonal hardfacing approach, which involves applying welds with different chemical compositions to specific surface zones of the die impressions, selected according to the dominant wear mechanisms in each zone. General guidelines for selecting hardfacing material compositions are also provided. Additionally, the article presents technological processes for die production and regeneration. The importance and application of computer simulations of forging processes are emphasized, particularly in predicting wear mechanisms and intensity, as well as in optimizing tool and forging geometry. This study investigates the mechanical, tribological, and electrochemical behaviour of a novel precipitation-hardenable martensitic alloy produced by selective laser melting (SLM). The alloy was specifically engineered with an optimised composition, free from cobalt and molybdenum, and featuring reduced nickel content (7 wt.%) and 8 wt.% chromium. It has been developed as a cost-effective and sustainable alternative to conventional maraging steels, while maintaining high mechanical strength and a refined microstructure tailored to the steep thermal gradients inherent to the SLM process. Several ageing heat treatments were assessed to evaluate their influence on microstructure, hardness, tensile strength, retained austenite content, dislocation density, as well as wear behaviour (pin-on-disc test) and corrosion resistance (polarisation curves in 3.5%NaCl). The results indicate that ageing at 540 °C for 2 h offers an optimal combination of hardness (550–560 HV), tensile strength (~1700 MPa), microstructural stability, and wear resistance, with a 90% improvement compared to the as-built condition. In contrast, ageing at 600 °C for 1 h enhances ductility and corrosion resistance (Rp = 462.2 kΩ; Ecorr = –111.8 mV), at the expense of a higher fraction of reverted austenite (~34%) and reduced hardness (450 HV). This study demonstrates that the mechanical, surface, and electrochemical performance of this novel SLM-produced alloy can be effectively tailored through controlled thermal treatments, offering promising opportunities for demanding applications requiring a customised balance of strength, durability, and corrosion behaviour. Considering environmental concerns, water-based nanolubricants have gained significant attention over conventional oil-based ones. Non-ecotoxic and highly environmentally friendly nanoadditives were chosen for nanolubricant synthesis, especially considering their use at elevated temperatures. In this study, hexagonal boron nitride nanosheets (hBNNSs) and titanium dioxide nanoparticles (TiO2 NPs) were used to prepare water-based lubricants with glycerol and surfactant sodium dodecyl benzene sulfonate (SDBS) in water under ultrasonication. An Rtec ball-on-disk tribometer was used to investigate the tribological performance of the synthesised water-based lubricants containing different nano-hBN/TiO2 concentrations, with dry and water conditions used as benchmarks. The results indicated that the water-based nanolubricant containing 0.5 wt% hBN and 0.5 wt% TiO2 exhibited the best tribological performance at both ambient (25 °C) and elevated (500 °C) temperatures. This optimal concentration leads to a reduction in the coefficient of friction (COF) by 72.9% and 37.5%, wear of disk by 62.5% and 49%, and wear of ball by 74% and 69% at ambient and elevated temperatures, respectively, compared to that of distilled water. Lubrication mechanisms were attributed to the rolling, mending, tribofilm, solid layer formation, and synergistic effects of hBNNSs and TiO2 NPs. Full article

This study investigates the mechanical, morphological, and wear properties of SiO2-filled tri-axial warp-knitted (TWK) glass fiber-reinforced vinyl ester matrix composites, with a focus on void fraction, tensile, flexural, hardness, and wear behavior. Adding SiO2 fillers reduced void fractions, enhancing composite strength, with values ranging from 1.63% to 5.31%. Tensile tests revealed that composites with 5 wt% SiO2 (GV1) exhibited superior tensile strength, Young’s modulus, and elongation due to enhanced fiber–matrix interaction. Conversely, composites with 10 wt% SiO2 (GV2) showed decreased tensile performance, indicating increased brittleness. Flexural tests demonstrated that GV1 outperformed GV2, showcasing higher flexural strength, elastic modulus, and deflection, reflecting improved load-bearing capacity at optimal filler content. Shore D hardness tests confirmed that GV1 had the highest hardness among the specimens. SEM analysis revealed wear behavior under various loads and sliding distances. GV1 exhibited minimal wear loss at lower loads and distances, while higher loads caused significant matrix detachment and fiber damage. These findings highlight the importance of optimizing SiO2 filler content to enhance epoxy composites’ mechanical and tribological performance. Full article

As a new type of alloy system composed of five or more principal components, high-entropy alloys demonstrate outstanding comprehensive performance in the field of friction and wear through the synergistic effects of the high-entropy effect, lattice distortion effect, hysteresis diffusion effect and cocktail effect. This paper systematically reviews the research progress on the friction and wear properties of high-entropy alloys. The mechanisms of metal elements such as Al, Ti, Cu and Nb through solid solution strengthening, second-phase precipitation and oxide film formation were analyzed emphatically. And non-metallic elements such as C, Si, and B form and strengthen the regulation laws of their tribological properties. The influence of working conditions, such as high temperature, ocean, and hydrogen peroxide on the friction and wear behavior of high-entropy alloys by altering the wear mechanism, was discussed. The influence of test conditions such as load, sliding velocity and friction pair matching on its friction coefficient and wear rate was expounded. It is pointed out that high-entropy alloys have significant application potential in key friction components, providing reference and guidance for the further development and application of high-entropy alloys. This study investigates the coefficient of friction (COF) and wear behavior in fretting regimes—stick, stick–slip, and gross sliding—under dry and oil-lubricated conditions. Fretting tests were conducted by increasing oscillation amplitude from a few micrometers to 48 µm. In dry conditions, displacement amplitude initially rose rapidly, stabilizing after about 5 million load cycles, indicating steady-state behavior. The friction ratio (FR) surged early, peaking between 0.7 and 1.0, before declining to stable values, suggesting a shift from adhesive to stable frictional interaction. The minimal slip amplitude confirmed the predominance of the stick regime. Conversely, in oil-lubricated conditions, displacement amplitude stabilized after an initial increase, achieving higher amplitudes than in dry tests. The FR started below 0.2, gradually increasing to a peak around 10,000 load cycles for higher oscillation amplitudes (e.g., 15 µm), reflecting the lubricant’s role in reducing metal-to-metal contact. COF curves in lubricated tests showed smoother transitions and lower peak values compared to dry tests. These findings highlight the lubricant’s effectiveness in minimizing adhesion and enhancing sliding efficiency, offering insights for optimizing material performance in engineering applications. In recent years, significant attention has been directed toward the development of coating materials capable of tailoring surface properties for various functional applications. Transition metal nitrides, in particular, have garnered interest due to their superior physical and chemical properties, including high hardness, excellent wear resistance, and strong corrosion resistance. In this study, a fabrication process for CrN-based thin films was developed by combining reactive direct current magnetron sputtering (dcMS) with post-deposition annealing in air. CrN coatings were deposited by reactive dcMS using different argon-nitrogen (Ar:N2) gas ratios (4:1, 3:1, 2:1, and 1:1), followed by annealing at 550 °C for 1.5 h in ambient air. XRD and EDS analysis revealed that this treatment results in the formation of a composite phase comprising CrN and Cr2O3. The resulting coating exhibited favorable mechanical and tribological properties, including a maximum hardness of 12 GPa, a low wear coefficient of 0.254 and a specific wear rate of 7.05 × 10−6 mm3/N·m, making it a strong candidate for advanced protective coating applications. Aluminum matrix composites provide an ideal solution for lightweight brake disks, but conventional casting processes are prone to crack initiation due to inhomogeneous reinforcement dispersion, gas porosity, and inadequate toughness. To break the conventional trade-off between high wear resistance and low toughness of brake disks, this study fabricated a bimetallic structure of SiCp/Al–Fe–V–Si aluminum matrix composite and cast ZL101 alloy using friction stir lap welding (FSLW). Then, the microstructural evolution, mechanical properties, and tribological behavior of the FSLW joints were studied by XRD, SEM, TEM, tensile testing, and tribological tests. The results showed that the FSLW process homogenized the distribution of SiC particle reinforcements in the SiCp/Al–Fe–V–Si composites. The Al12(Fe,V)3Si heat-resistant phase was not decomposed or coarsened, and the mechanical properties were maintained. The FSLW process refined the grains of the ZL101 aluminum alloy through recrystallization and fragmented eutectic silicon, improving elongation to 22%. A metallurgical bond formed at the joint interface. Tensile fracture occurred within the ZL101 matrix, demonstrating that the interfacial bond strength exceeded the alloy’s load-bearing capacity. In addition, the composites exhibited significantly enhanced wear resistance after FSLW, with their wear rate reduced by approximately 40% compared to the as-received materials, which was attributed to the homogenized SiC particle distribution and the activation of an oxidative wear mechanism. Graphene oxide (GO), a derivative of graphene, has attracted significant attention in tribological applications due to its unique structural, mechanical, and chemical properties. This review highlights the influence of GO and its composites on friction and wear performance across various engineering systems. The paper explores GO’s key properties, such as its high surface area, layered morphology, and abundant functional groups. These features contribute to reduced shear resistance, tribofilm formation, and improved load-bearing capacity. A detailed analysis of GO-based composites, including polymer, metal, and ceramic matrices, reveals those small additions of GO (typically 0.1–2 wt%) result in substantial reductions in coefficient of friction and wear rate, with improvements ranging between 30–70%, depending on the application. The tribological mechanisms, including self-lubrication, dispersion, thermal stability, and interface interactions, are discussed to provide insights into performance enhancement. Furthermore, the effects of electrochemical environment, functional group modifications, and external loading conditions on GO’s tribological behavior are examined. Despite these advantages, challenges such as scalability, agglomeration, and material compatibility persist. Overall, the paper demonstrates that GO is a promising additive for advanced tribological systems, while also identifying key limitations and future research directions. Full article

This study presents the structural and compositional characterisation of a newly developed Ti55Al27Mo13 alloy synthesised via aluminothermic reaction. The alloy was designed to overcome the limitations of conventional processing routes for high–melting–point elements such as Ti and Mo, enabling the formation of a complex, multi–phase microstructure in a single high–temperature step. The aim was to develop and characterise a material with microstructural features expected to enhance wear resistance, oxidation behaviour, and thermal stability in future applications. The alloy is intended as a precursor for composite nanopowders and surface coatings applied to aluminium–, magnesium–, and iron–based substrates subjected to mechanical and thermal loading. Elemental analysis (XRF, EDS) confirmed the presence of Ti, Al, Mo, and minor elements such as Si, Fe, and C. Microstructural investigations using laser confocal and scanning electron microscopy revealed a heterogeneous structure comprising solid solutions, eutectic regions, and dispersed oxide and carbide phases. Notably, the alloy exhibits high hardness values, reaching >2400 HV in Al2O3 regions and ~1300 HV in Mo– and Si–enriched solid solutions. These results suggest the material’s substantial potential for protective surface engineering. Further tribological, thermal, and corrosion testing, conducted with meticulous attention to detail, will follow to validate its functional performance in target applications. Full article
