For the last few decades, the use of High-Speed Trains (HSTs) has been growing rapidly in various parts of the world. Despite rapid global expansion, many HST projects fail due to demand overestimation and cost overruns. This study analyzes factors influencing HST demand in Indonesia, aiming to identify impactful determinants from user perspectives. Employing a quantitative cross-sectional approach, this research utilized questionnaires distributed to users of different modes of transportation in the Jakarta–Bandung area, including trains, buses, travel services, and private cars. Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) via Lisrel software was used to analyze the data. The results indicate that Transit-Oriented Developments (TOD) and new urban areas significantly increase HST demand by facilitating urban growth and development. Additionally, supporting infrastructure and external factors such as road accessibility, parking availability, shuttle services, and environmental integration are pivotal in shaping commuter preferences. Although factors such as safety, comfort, and reliability are important, they alone may not be adequate to persuade consumers to use high-speed trains for their travel. Full article

Since its first appearance as a human pathogen in 1976, Legionella pneumophila has been identified as a causative agent of community-acquired pneumonia (CAP). It survives in rivers, bays, lakes, and water reservoirs, and it is categorized as the fourth most common causative agent of CAP leading to hospitalization. We aimed to investigate patterns in which environmental, seasonal and regional factors may affect the prevalence of Legionnaires’ disease in Crete during the last two decades (2000–2022).The data used originated from the national surveillance database and included any person reported with travel-associated Legionnaires’ disease (TALD) between January 2000 and December 2022. Meteorological data were collected from the National Weather Service. The meteorological variables included (max) temperature (in °C), cloudiness (in octas), wind speed (in knots), and relative humidity (RH) (%). The statistical analysis was based on a case-crossover design with 1:1 matching characteristic. We revealed both seasonal and regional effects on the incidence of Legionnaires’ disease. Cases are significantly more frequent in autumn, in comparison to the other three seasons, while Rethymnon is the prefecture with fewer cases in comparison to Chania or Heraklion. In addition, our research showed that the majority of cases occurred during the years 2017–2018. TALD in Crete is significantly associated with temperature in °C and wind speed in knots. Our research suggests that temporal and spatial factors significantly influence disease cases. These results are in line with studies from foreign countries. The study results aspire to expand our knowledge regarding the epidemiological characteristics of Legionnaires’ disease in relation to local, geographical and meteorological factors on the island of Crete. In modern agriculture, tractors play a crucial role in powering tools and implements. Proper operation of agricultural tractors in mechanized field operations can support sustainable agriculture and reduce emissions of pollutants such as carbon dioxide (CO2). This has been a recurring concern associated with agricultural intensification for food production. This study aimed to evaluate the optimization of tractor gears and engine speed during crop operations to minimize CO2 emissions and promote sustainability. The experiment was conducted using a strip plot design with subdivided sections and six replications, following a double factorial structure. The first factor evaluated was the type of agricultural implement (disc harrow, subsoiler, or sprayer), while the second factor was the engine speed setting (nominal or reduced). Operational and energy performance metrics were analyzed, including fuel consumption and CO2 emissions, travel speed, effective working time, wheel slippage, and working depth. Optimized gear selection and engine speeds resulted in a 20 to 40% reduction in fuel consumption and CO2 emissions. However, other evaluated parameters remain unaffected by the reduced engine speed, regardless of the implement used, ensuring the operation’s quality. Thus, optimizing operator training or configuring machines allows for environmental impact reduction, making agricultural practices more sustainable. Full article

Land use significantly influences mobility dynamics, affecting both travel behavior and mode choice. Traditional indicators such as the Floor Area Ratio, Land-Use Mix Index, and Built-up Area Ratio are widely used to describe settlement patterns; yet, they often fail to capture their functional impacts on road networks. This study introduces two complementary indicators—Settlement Ratio (SR) and Settled Area (SA)—developed through a spatial analysis framework integrating GIS data and MATLAB processing. SR offers a continuous typological profile of built-up functions along the road axis, while SA measures the percentage of anthropized land within fixed analysis windows. Applied to two Italian state roads, SS14 and SS309, in the Veneto Region, the dual-indicator approach reveals how the intensity (SR) and extent (SA) of settlement vary across different territorial contexts. In suburban segments, SR values exceeding 15–20, together with SA levels between 10% and 15%, highlight the significant spatial impact of isolated development clusters—often not evident from macro-scale observations. These findings demonstrate that the SR–SA framework provides a robust tool for analyzing land use in relation to road function. Although the study focuses on spatial structure and indicator design, future developments will explore correlations with traffic flow, speed, and crash data to support road safety analyses. Personal Rapid Transit (PRT) and Group Rapid Transit (GRT) are classes of fully automated public transport systems, where passengers can travel in small vehicles on an interconnected, grade-separated network of guideways, non-stop, from origin to destination. PRT and GRT are considered sustainable as they are low-emission and able to attract car drivers. The parameterized cost modeling framework developed in this paper has the advantage that profitability of different PRT/GRT systems can be rapidly verified in a transparent way and in function of a variety of relevant system parameters. This framework may contribute to a more transparent, rapid, and low-cost evaluation of PRT/GRT schemes for planning and decision-making purposes. The main innovation is the introduction of the “peak hour network saturation” S: the number of vehicles in circulation during peak hour divided by the maximum number of vehicles running at line speed with minimum time headways. It is an index that aggregates the main uncertainties in the planning process, namely the demand level relative to the supply level. Furthermore, a maximum S can be estimated for a PRT/GRT project, even without a detailed demand estimation. The profit per trip is analytically derived based on S and a series of more certain parameters, such as fares, capital and maintenance costs, daily demand curve, empty vehicle share, and physical properties of the system. To demonstrate the ability of the framework to analyze profitability in function of various parameters, we apply the methods to a single vehicle PRT, a platooned PRT, and a mixed PRT/GRT. The results show that PRT services with trip length proportional fares could be profitable already for S>0.25. The PRT capacity, profitability, and robustness to tripled infrastructure costs can be increased by vehicle platooning or GRT service during peak hours. Full article

The typical ranges available for electric vehicles (EVs) may be considered by users to be inadequate when compared to long, real-life trips, and charging operations may need to be planned along journeys. To evaluate the compatibility between vehicle features and charging options for realistic journeys performed by car, a simulation approach is proposed here, using travel data collected from real vehicles to obtain trip chains for multiple consecutive days. Car travel activities, including stops with the option of charging, were simulated by applying an agent-based approach. Charging operations can be integrated into trip chains for user activities, assuming that they remain unchanged in the event that vehicles switch to electric. The energy consumption of the analyzed trips, disaggregated by vehicle type, was estimated using the average travel speed, which is useful for capturing the main route features (ranging from urban to motorways). Data were recorded for approximately 25,000 vehicles in the Turin Metropolitan Area for six consecutive days. Market segmentation of the vehicles was introduced to take into consideration different energy consumption rates and charging times, given that the electric power, battery size, and consumption rate can be related to the vehicle category. Charging activities carried out using public infrastructure during idle time between consecutive trips, as well as those carried out at home or work, were identified in order to model different needs. A rotating imperfect ring resonator of the gyroscope is modeled by a rotating thin ring with evenly distributed point masses. The free response of the rotating ring structure at constant speed is investigated, including the steady elastic deformation and wave response. The dynamic equations are formulated by using Hamilton’s principle in the ground-fixed coordinates. The coordinate transformation is applied to facilitate the solution of the steady deformation, and the displacements and tangential tension for the deformation are calculated by the perturbation method. Employing Galerkin’s method, the governing equation of the free vibration is casted in matrix differential operator form after the separation of the real and imaginary parts with the inextensional assumption. The natural frequencies are calculated through the eigenvalue analysis, and the numerical results are obtained. The effects of the point masses on the natural frequencies of the forward and backward traveling wave curves of different orders are discussed, especially on the measurement accuracy of gyroscopes for different cases. In the ground-fixed coordinates, the frequency splitting results in a crosspoint of the natural frequencies of the forward and backward traveling waves. The finite element method is applied to demonstrate the validity and accuracy of the model. Full article

Differential Mechanism of 3D Motions of Falling Debris in Tunnels Under Extreme Wind Environments Induced by a Single Train and by Trains Crossing

The extended operation of high-speed railways has led to an increased incidence of tunnel lining defects, with falling debris posing a significant safety threat. Within tunnels, single-train passage and trains-crossing events constitute the most frequent operational scenarios, both generating extreme aerodynamic environments that alter debris trajectories from free fall. To systematically investigate the aerodynamic differences and underlying mechanisms governing falling debris behavior under these two distinct conditions, a three-dimensional computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model (debris–air–tunnel–train) was developed using an improved delayed detached eddy simulation (IDDES) turbulence model. Comparative analyses focused on the translational and rotational motions as well as the aerodynamic load coefficients of the debris in both single-train and trains-crossing scenarios. The mechanisms driving the changes in debris aerodynamic behavior are elucidated. Findings reveal that under single-train operation, falling debris travels a greater distance compared with trains-crossing conditions. Specifically, at train speeds ranging from 250–350 km/h, the average flight distances of falling debris in the X and Z directions under single-train conditions surpass those under trains crossing conditions by 10.3 and 5.5 times, respectively. At a train speed of 300 km/h, the impulse of CFx and CFz under single-train conditions is 8.6 and 4.5 times greater than under trains-crossing conditions, consequently leading to the observed reduction in flight distance. Under the conditions of trains crossing, the falling debris is situated between the two trains, and although the wind speed is low, the flow field exhibits instability. This is the primary factor contributing to the reduced flight distance of the falling debris. However, it also leads to more pronounced trajectory deviations and increased speed fluctuations under intersection conditions. The relative velocity (CRV) on the falling debris surface is diminished, resulting in smaller-scale vortex structures that are more numerous. Consequently, the aerodynamic load coefficient is reduced, while the fluctuation range experiences an increase. Full article

The growing popularity of Personal Light Electric Vehicles (PLEVs), such as e-scooters, has revolutionized urban mobility by offering compact, cost-effective, and environmentally friendly transportation solutions. However, safety concerns, including inadequate infrastructure, poor protective measures, and high accident rates, remain critical challenges. This paper presents the design and development of an innovative self-balancing microvehicle under the H2020 LEONARDO project, which aims to address these challenges through advanced engineering and user-centric design. The vehicle combines features of monowheels and e-scooters, integrating cutting-edge technologies to enhance safety, stability, and usability. The design adheres to European regulations, including Germany’s eKFV standards, and incorporates user preferences identified through representative online surveys of 1500 PLEV users. These preferences include improved handling on uneven surfaces, enhanced signaling capabilities, and reduced instability during maneuvers. The prototype features a lightweight composite structure reinforced with carbon fibers, a high-torque motorized front wheel, and multiple speed modes tailored to different conditions, such as travel in pedestrian areas, use by novice riders, and advanced users. Braking tests demonstrate deceleration values of up to 3.5 m/s2, comparable to PLEV market standards and exceeding regulatory minimums, while smooth acceleration ramps ensure rider stability and safety. Additional features, such as identification plates and weight-dependent motor control, enhance compliance with local traffic rules and prevent misuse. The vehicle’s design also addresses common safety concerns, such as curb navigation and signaling, by incorporating large-diameter wheels, increased ground clearance, and electrically operated direction indicators. Future upgrades include the addition of a second rear wheel for enhanced stability, skateboard-like rear axle modifications for improved maneuverability, and hybrid supercapacitors to minimize fire risks and extend battery life. With its focus on safety, regulatory compliance, and rider-friendly innovations, this microvehicle represents a significant advancement in promoting safe and sustainable urban mobility. Full article

This study investigates the friction stir joining of AA6082-T6 aluminum alloy and Noryl GFN2 polymer in a buttstrap configuration, targeting the development of lightweight cylindrical-shaped structures where the polymer provides thermal, chemical, and electrical insulation, while the aluminum ensures mechanical integrity. A parametric analysis was carried out to assess the ability to produce friction stir buttstrap composite panels in a single processing step and assess the resulting tensile and flexural behavior. To that end, travel and rotating speeds ranging from 2150 to 2250 rpm, and 100 to 140 mm/min, respectively, were employed while keeping plunge depth and the tilt angle constant. A total of nine composite joints were successfully produced and subsequently subjected to both tensile and four-point bending tests. The tensile and flexural strength results ranged from 80 to 139 MPa, and 39 to 47 MPa, respectively. Moreover, the microstructural examination revealed that all joints exhibited a defect within the joining region and its size and shape had a significant effect on tensile strength, whereas the flexural strength was less affected with more uniform results. The joining region was also characterized by a decrease in hardness, particularly in the pin-affected region on the aluminum end of the joint, exhibiting a W-shaped pattern. Contrarily, on the polymeric end of the joining region, no significant change in hardness was observed. Full article

The integration of autonomous vehicles (AVs) into urban transportation systems has significant potential to enhance traffic efficiency and reduce environmental impacts. This study evaluates the impact of different AV penetration scenarios (0%, 10%, 30%, 50%) on traffic performance and carbon emissions along Prince Mohammed bin Salman bin Abdulaziz Road in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. Using microscopic simulation (SUMO) based on real-world datasets, we assess key performance indicators such as travel time, stop frequency, speed, and CO2 emissions. Results indicate notable improvements with increasing AV deployment, including up to 25.5% reduced travel time and 14.6% lower emissions at 50% AV penetration. Coordinated AV behavior was approximated using adjusted simulation parameters and Python-based APIs, effectively modeling vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V), vehicle-to-infrastructure (V2I), and vehicle-to-network (V2N) communications. These findings highlight the benefits of harmonized AV–human vehicle interactions, providing a scalable and data-driven framework applicable to smart urban mobility planning. Full article

An in-depth analysis of the two-phase flow in a hydraulic braking pipeline can reveal its evolution process pertinent for designing and maintaining the hydraulic system. In this study, a high-speed camera examined the two-phase flow pattern and bubble characteristics in a hydraulic braking pipeline. Bubble flow pattern recognition, bubble segmentation, and bubble tracking were performed to analyze the bubble movement, including its behavior, distribution, velocity, and acceleration. The results indicate that the gas–liquid two-phase flow patterns in the hydraulic braking pipeline include bubbly, slug, plug, annular, and transient flows. Experiments reveal that bubbly flow is the most frequent, followed by slug, plug, and transient flows. However, plug and transient flows are unstable, while annular flow occurs at a wheel speed of 200 r/min. Bubbles predominantly appear in the upper section of the pipeline. Furthermore, large bubbles travel faster than small bubbles, whereas slug flow bubbles exhibit higher velocities than those in plug or transient flows. Full article

To overcome the limitations of current train positioning systems, including low positioning accuracy and heavy reliance on track transponders or GNSS signals, this paper proposes a novel LiDAR-inertial and visual landmark fusion framework. Firstly, an IMU preintegration factor considering the Earth’s rotation and a LiDAR-inertial odometry factor accounting for degenerate states are constructed to adapt to railway train operating environments. Subsequently, a lightweight network based on YOLO improvement is used for recognizing reflective kilometer posts, while PaddleOCR extracts numerical codes. High-precision vertex coordinates of kilometer posts are obtained by jointly using LiDAR point cloud and an image detection box. Next, a kilometer post factor is constructed, and multi-source information is optimized within a factor graph framework. Finally, onboard experiments conducted on real railway vehicles demonstrate high-precision landmark detection at 35 FPS with 94.8% average precision. The proposed method delivers robust positioning within 5 m RMSE accuracy for high-speed, long-distance train travel, establishing a novel framework for intelligent railway development. Full article

Unbalanced accelerations occurring during tram travel have a significant impact on passenger comfort and safety, as well as on the rate of wear and tear on infrastructure and rolling stock. Ideally, these dynamic forces should be monitored continuously in real-time; however, traditional systems require high-precision accelerometers and proprietary software—investments often beyond the reach of municipally funded tram operators. To this end, as part of the research project “Accelerometer Measurements in Rail Passenger Transport Vehicles”, pilot measurement campaigns were conducted in Poland on tram lines in Gdańsk, Toruń, Bydgoszcz, and Olsztyn. Off-the-shelf smartphones equipped with MEMS accelerometers and GPS modules, running the Physics Toolbox Sensor Suite Pro app, were used. Although the research employs widely known methods, this paper addresses part of the gap in affordable real-time monitoring by demonstrating that, in the future, equipment equipped solely with consumer-grade MEMS accelerometers can deliver sufficiently accurate data in applications where high precision is not critical. This paper presents an analysis of a subset of results from the Gdańsk tram network. Lateral (x) and vertical (z) accelerations were recorded at three fixed points inside two tram models (Pesa 128NG Jazz Duo and Düwag N8C), while longitudinal accelerations were deliberately omitted at this stage due to their strong dependence on driver behavior. Raw data were exported as CSV files, processed and analyzed in R version 4.2.2, and then mapped spatially using ArcGIS cartograms. Vehicle speed was calculated both via the haversine formula—accounting for Earth’s curvature—and via a Cartesian approximation. Over the ~7 km route, both methods yielded virtually identical results, validating the simpler approach for short distances. Acceleration histograms approximated Gaussian distributions, with most values between 0.05 and 0.15 m/s2, and extreme values approaching 1 m/s2. The results demonstrate that low-cost mobile devices, after future calibration against certified accelerometers, can provide sufficiently rich data for ride-comfort assessment and show promise for cost-effective condition monitoring of both track and rolling stock. Future work will focus on optimizing the app’s data collection pipeline, refining standard-based analysis algorithms, and validating smartphone measurements against benchmark sensors. Full article

This study develops a high-speed rail demand prediction model based on access probability, which quantifies the likelihood of passengers choosing a departure station among multiple alternatives. Traditional models assign demand to the nearest station or rely on manual calibration, often failing to reflect actual travel behavior and requiring excessive time and resources. To address these limitations, this study integrates survey data, real-world datasets, and machine learning techniques to model station choice behavior more accurately. Key influencing factors, including headway, access time, parking availability, and transit connections, were identified through passenger surveys and incorporated into the model. Machine learning algorithms improved prediction accuracy, with SHAP analysis providing interpretability. The proposed model achieved high accuracy, with an average error rate below 3% for major stations. Scenario analyses confirmed its applicability in network expansions, including GTX openings and the integration of mobility as a service. This model enhances data-driven decision-making for rail operators and offers insights for rail network planning and operations. Future research will focus on validating the model across diverse regions and refining it with updated datasets and external data sources. Full article
