Applying Transformer-Based Dynamic-Sequence Techniques to Transit Data Analysis

Transit systems play a vital role in urban mobility, yet predicting individual travel behavior within these systems remains a complex challenge. Traditional machine learning approaches struggle with transit trip data because each trip may consist of a variable number of transit legs, leading to missing data and inconsistencies when using fixed-length tabular representations. To address this issue, we propose a transformer-based dynamic-sequence approach that models transit trips as variable-length sequences, allowing for flexible representation while leveraging the power of attention mechanisms. Our methodology constructs trip sequences by encoding each transit leg as a token, incorporating travel time, mode of transport, and a 2D positional encoding based on grid-based spatial coordinates. By dynamically skipping missing legs instead of imputing artificial values, our approach maintains data integrity and prevents bias. The transformer model then processes these sequences using self-attention, effectively capturing relationships across different trip segments and spatial patterns. To evaluate the effectiveness of our approach, we train the model on a dataset of urban transit trips and predict first-mile and last-mile travel times. We assess performance using Mean Absolute Error (MAE) and Root Mean Squared Error (RMSE). Experimental results demonstrate that our dynamic-sequence method yields up to a 30.96% improvement in accuracy compared to non-dynamic methods while preserving the underlying structure of transit trips. This study contributes to intelligent transportation systems by presenting a robust, adaptable framework for modeling real-world transit data. Our findings highlight the advantages of self-attention-based architectures for handling irregular trip structures, offering a novel perspective on a data-driven understanding of individual travel behavior. Land use significantly influences mobility dynamics, affecting both travel behavior and mode choice. Traditional indicators such as the Floor Area Ratio, Land-Use Mix Index, and Built-up Area Ratio are widely used to describe settlement patterns; yet, they often fail to capture their functional impacts on road networks. This study introduces two complementary indicators—Settlement Ratio (SR) and Settled Area (SA)—developed through a spatial analysis framework integrating GIS data and MATLAB processing. SR offers a continuous typological profile of built-up functions along the road axis, while SA measures the percentage of anthropized land within fixed analysis windows. Applied to two Italian state roads, SS14 and SS309, in the Veneto Region, the dual-indicator approach reveals how the intensity (SR) and extent (SA) of settlement vary across different territorial contexts. In suburban segments, SR values exceeding 15–20, together with SA levels between 10% and 15%, highlight the significant spatial impact of isolated development clusters—often not evident from macro-scale observations. These findings demonstrate that the SR–SA framework provides a robust tool for analyzing land use in relation to road function. Although the study focuses on spatial structure and indicator design, future developments will explore correlations with traffic flow, speed, and crash data to support road safety analyses. Accurately predicting the next location of urban individuals is a central issue in human mobility research. Human mobility exhibits diverse patterns, requiring the integration of spatiotemporal contexts for location prediction. In this context, multi-view learning has become a prominent method in location prediction. Despite notable advances, current methods still face challenges in effectively capturing non-spatial proximity of regional preferences, complex temporal periodicity, and the ambiguity of location semantics. To address these challenges, we propose a representation-enhanced multi-view learning network (ReMVL-Net) for location prediction. Specifically, we propose a community-enhanced spatial representation that transcends geographic proximity to capture latent mobility patterns. In addition, we introduce a multi-granular enhanced temporal representation to model the multi-level periodicity of human mobility and design a rule-based semantic recognition method to enrich location semantics. We evaluate the proposed model using mobile phone data from Fuzhou. Experimental results show a 2.94% improvement in prediction accuracy over the best-performing baseline. Further analysis reveals that community space plays a key role in narrowing the candidate location set. Moreover, we observe that prediction difficulty is strongly influenced by individual travel behaviors, with more regular activity patterns being easier to predict. Full article

This study investigates the factors influencing school trip mode choice among senior high school students in the Chiang Rai urban area, Chiang Rai, Thailand, under normal and adverse weather conditions. Utilizing data from 472 students across six extra-large urban schools, a Multinomial Logit (MNL) regression model was applied to examine the effects of socio-demographic attributes, household vehicle ownership, travel distance, and spatial variables on mode selection. The results revealed notable modal shifts during adverse weather, with motorcycle usage decreasing and private vehicle reliance increasing, while school bus usage remained stable, highlighting its role as a resilient transport option. Car ownership emerged as a strong enabler of modal flexibility, whereas students with limited access to private transport demonstrated reduced adaptability. Additionally, increased waiting and travel times during adverse conditions underscored infrastructure and service vulnerabilities, particularly for mid-distance travelers. The findings suggest an urgent need for transport policies that promote inclusive and climate-resilient mobility systems, particularly in the context of Chiang Rai, including expanded school bus services, improved first-mile connectivity, and enhanced pedestrian infrastructure. This study contributes to the literature by addressing environmental variability in school travel behavior and offers actionable insights for sustainable transport planning in secondary cities and border regions. Railway systems occupy a predominant role in urban transport, providing efficient, high-capacity mobility. Progress in rail transport allows fast traveling, whilst environmental concerns and CO2 emissions are on the rise. The integration of railway systems with renewable energy source (RES)-based stations presents a promising avenue to improve the sustainability, reliability, and efficiency of urban transport networks. A storage system is needed to both ensure a continuous power supply and meet train demand at the station. Batteries (BTs) offer high energy density, while supercapacitors (SCs) offer both a large number of charge and discharge cycles, and high-power density. This paper proposes a hybrid RES (photovoltaic and wind), combined with batteries and supercapacitors constituting the hybrid energy storage system (HESS). One major drawback of trains is the long charging time required in stations, so they have been fitted with SCs to allow them to charge up quickly. A new fuzzy energy management strategy (F-EMS) is proposed. This supervision strategy optimizes the power flow between renewable energy sources, HESS, and trains. DC bus voltage regulation is involved, maintaining BT and SC charging levels within acceptable ranges. The simulation results, carried out using MATLAB/Simulink, demonstrate the effectiveness of the suggested fuzzy energy management strategy for various production conditions and train demand. One of the fundamental goals of contemporary mobility is to optimize transport processes in urban areas. The solution in this area seems to be the implementation of the idea of sustainable transport systems based on the Smart City concept. The article presents a case study—an assessment of the possibilities of changing mobility habits based on the idea of sustainable urban transport, taking into account the criterion of energy consumption of individual means of transport. The analyses are based on a comparison of selected means of transport occurring in the urban environment according to several key parameters for the optimization and efficiency of transport processes, i.e., cost, time, travel comfort, and impact on the natural environment, while simultaneously linking them to the criterion of energy consumption of individual means of transport. The analyzed parameters currently constitute the most important group of challenges in the area of shaping and planning optimal and sustainable urban transport. The presented research was used to indicate the connections between various areas of optimization of the transport process and the energy efficiency of individual modes of transport. Analyses have shown that the least time-consuming process of urban mobility is associated with the highest level of CO2 emissions and, at the same time, the highest level of energy efficiency. However, combining public transport with other means of transport can meet most of the transport expectations of city residents, also in terms of energy optimization. The research results presented in the article can contribute to the creation of a strategy for the development of the transport network based on the postulates of increasing the optimization and efficiency of individual means of transport in urban areas. At the same time, recognizing the criterion of energy intensity of means of transport as leading in the development of sustainable urban mobility. Thus, confirming the important role of existing transport systems in the process of shaping and planning sustainable urban mobility in accordance with the idea of Smart City. Full article

Urban areas are facing increasing traffic congestion, pollution, and infrastructure strain. Traditional urban transportation systems are often fragmented. They require users to plan, pay, and travel across multiple disconnected services. Mobility-as-a-Service (MaaS) integrates these services into a single digital platform, simplifying access and improving the user experience. This review critically examines the role of MaaS in fostering sustainable mobility ecosystems. MaaS aims to enhance user-friendliness, service variety, and sustainability by adopting a customer-centric approach to transportation. The findings reveal that successful MaaS systems consistently align with multimodal transport infrastructure, equitable access policies, and strong public-private partnerships. MaaS enhances the management of routes and traffic, effectively mitigating delays and congestion while concurrently reducing energy consumption and fuel usage. In this study, the authors examine MaaS as a new mobility paradigm for a sustainable transportation system in smart cities, observing the challenges and opportunities associated with its implementation. To assess the environmental impact, a sustainability index is calculated based on the use of different modes of transportation. Significant findings indicate that MaaS systems are proliferating in both quantity and complexity, increasingly integrating capabilities such as real-time multimodal planning, dynamic pricing, and personalized user profiles. Autonomous vehicles (AVs) have emerged as a promising sustainable urban mobility solution, expected to lead to enhanced road safety, smoother traffic flows, less traffic congestion, improved accessibility, better energy utilization and environmental performance, as well as more efficient passenger and freight transportation, in terms of time and cost, due to better fleet management and platooning. However, challenges also arise, mostly related to data privacy, security and cyber-security, high acquisition and infrastructure costs, accident liability, even possible increased traffic congestion and air pollution due to induced travel demand. This paper presents the results of a survey conducted among 654 residents who experienced an autonomous bus (AB) service in the city of Trikala, Greece, in order to assess their willingness to use (WTU) and willingness to pay (WTP) for ABs, through testing a range of factors based on a literature review. Results useful to policy-makers were extracted, such as that the intention to use ABs was mostly shaped by psychological factors (e.g., users’ perceptions of usefulness and safety, and trust in the service provider), while WTU seemed to be positively affected by previous experience in using ABs. In contrast, sociodemographic factors were found to have very little effect on the intention to use ABs, while apart from personal utility, users’ perceptions of how autonomous driving will improve the overall life standards in the study area also mattered. What Determines Carbon Emissions of Multimodal Travel? Insights from Interpretable Machine Learning on Mobility Trajectory Data

Understanding the carbon emissions of multimodal travel—comprising walking, metro, bus, cycling, and ride-hailing—is essential for promoting sustainable urban mobility. However, most existing studies focus on single-mode travel, while underlying spatiotemporal and behavioral determinants remain insufficiently explored due to the lack of fine-grained data and interpretable analytical frameworks. This study proposes a novel integration of high-frequency, real-world mobility trajectory data with interpretable machine learning to systematically identify the key drivers of carbon emissions at the individual trip level. Firstly, multimodal travel chains are reconstructed using continuous GPS trajectory data collected in Beijing. Secondly, a model based on Calculate Emissions from Road Transport (COPERT) is developed to quantify trip-level CO2 emissions. Thirdly, four interpretable machine learning models based on gradient boosting—XGBoost, GBDT, LightGBM, and CatBoost—are trained using transportation and built environment features to model the relationship between CO2 emissions and a set of explanatory variables; finally, Shapley Additive exPlanations (SHAP) and partial dependence plots (PDPs) are used to interpret the model outputs, revealing key determinants and their non-linear interaction effects. The results show that transportation-related features account for 75.1% of the explained variance in emissions, with bus usage being the most influential single factor (contributing 22.6%). Built environment features explain the remaining 24.9%. The PDP analysis reveals that substantial emission reductions occur only when the shares of bus, metro, and cycling surpass threshold levels of approximately 40%, 40%, and 30%, respectively. Additionally, travel carbon emissions are minimized when trip origins and destinations are located within a 10 to 11 km radius of the central business district (CBD). This study advances the field by establishing a scalable, interpretable, and behaviorally grounded framework to assess carbon emissions from multimodal travel, providing actionable insights for low-carbon transport planning and policy design. The growing popularity of Personal Light Electric Vehicles (PLEVs), such as e-scooters, has revolutionized urban mobility by offering compact, cost-effective, and environmentally friendly transportation solutions. However, safety concerns, including inadequate infrastructure, poor protective measures, and high accident rates, remain critical challenges. This paper presents the design and development of an innovative self-balancing microvehicle under the H2020 LEONARDO project, which aims to address these challenges through advanced engineering and user-centric design. The vehicle combines features of monowheels and e-scooters, integrating cutting-edge technologies to enhance safety, stability, and usability. The design adheres to European regulations, including Germany’s eKFV standards, and incorporates user preferences identified through representative online surveys of 1500 PLEV users. These preferences include improved handling on uneven surfaces, enhanced signaling capabilities, and reduced instability during maneuvers. The prototype features a lightweight composite structure reinforced with carbon fibers, a high-torque motorized front wheel, and multiple speed modes tailored to different conditions, such as travel in pedestrian areas, use by novice riders, and advanced users. Braking tests demonstrate deceleration values of up to 3.5 m/s2, comparable to PLEV market standards and exceeding regulatory minimums, while smooth acceleration ramps ensure rider stability and safety. Additional features, such as identification plates and weight-dependent motor control, enhance compliance with local traffic rules and prevent misuse. The vehicle’s design also addresses common safety concerns, such as curb navigation and signaling, by incorporating large-diameter wheels, increased ground clearance, and electrically operated direction indicators. Future upgrades include the addition of a second rear wheel for enhanced stability, skateboard-like rear axle modifications for improved maneuverability, and hybrid supercapacitors to minimize fire risks and extend battery life. With its focus on safety, regulatory compliance, and rider-friendly innovations, this microvehicle represents a significant advancement in promoting safe and sustainable urban mobility. Full article

The Barcelona Metropolitan Area (AMB) has implemented various policies to reduce car use and promote more sustainable mobility. Initiatives such as superblocks, Low Emission Zones (LEZs), and the Bicivia network aim to transform the urban model in response to environmental and congestion challenges. However, the high reliance on private vehicles for intermunicipal travel, uneven infrastructure, and social resistance to certain changes remain significant issues. This study examines the evolution of mobility patterns and assesses the effectiveness of the above policies in fostering real and sustainable change. A mixed-methods approach was adopted, which combined an exploratory factor analysis (EFA) of 2011–2024 data, trend linear regression, and a comparative international analysis. The EFA identified four key structural dimensions: traditional transport infrastructure, active mobility and bus lines, public bicycles and mixed use, and transport efficiency and punctuality. The findings reveal a clear reduction in private car use and an increase in sustainable modes of transport. This indicates that there are prospects for future transformation. Nonetheless, challenges persist in intermunicipal mobility and the public acceptance of the measures. This study provides empirical and comparative evidence and emphasizes the need for integrated metropolitan governance to achieve a resilient and sustainable urban model. Full article

At the Politecnica Salesiana University (UPS) in Guayaquil, Ecuador, urban mobility challenges were addressed with the aim of improving students’ quality of life and promoting sustainability. This study evaluated the technical, economic, and social feasibility of implementing a shared transportation (carpooling) system using a quantitative-descriptive approach. Surveys were applied to a stratified sample of 256 students to analyze transportation habits. Route planning was performed using ArcGIS software, and costs were calculated with Microsoft Excel. Social impact assessment involved focus groups and analysis of variables such as changes in mobility patterns, system acceptance, and perceived safety, comfort, and accessibility. Key indicators included the percentage of students willing to participate in the pilot (82.7%), satisfaction with travel time savings (85.7% fully satisfied), and positive perceptions of safety and comfort. The results suggest that the proposed system is not only economically viable but also widely accepted by students, contributing to reduced stress, travel time, and single-occupancy vehicle use. This study demonstrates the feasibility of shared transport in urban universities and provides a replicable model to guide sustainable mobility policies that improve safety, comfort, and efficiency in student commuting. The integration of autonomous vehicles (AVs) into urban transportation systems has significant potential to enhance traffic efficiency and reduce environmental impacts. This study evaluates the impact of different AV penetration scenarios (0%, 10%, 30%, 50%) on traffic performance and carbon emissions along Prince Mohammed bin Salman bin Abdulaziz Road in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. Using microscopic simulation (SUMO) based on real-world datasets, we assess key performance indicators such as travel time, stop frequency, speed, and CO2 emissions. Results indicate notable improvements with increasing AV deployment, including up to 25.5% reduced travel time and 14.6% lower emissions at 50% AV penetration. Coordinated AV behavior was approximated using adjusted simulation parameters and Python-based APIs, effectively modeling vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V), vehicle-to-infrastructure (V2I), and vehicle-to-network (V2N) communications. These findings highlight the benefits of harmonized AV–human vehicle interactions, providing a scalable and data-driven framework applicable to smart urban mobility planning. Full article

Traffic conditions are a key factor in our society, contributing to quality of life and the economy, as well as access to professional, educational, and health resources. This emphasizes the need for a reliable road network to facilitate traffic fluidity across the nation and improve mobility. Reaching these characteristics demands good traffic volume prediction methods, not only in the short term but also in the long term, which helps design transportation strategies and road planning. However, most of the research has focused on short-term prediction, applied mostly to short-trip distances, while effective long-term forecasting, which has become a challenging issue in recent years, is lacking. The team proposes a traffic prediction method that leverages K-means clustering, long short-term memory (LSTM) neural network, and Fourier transform (FT) for long-term traffic prediction. The proposed method was evaluated on a real-world dataset from the U.S. Travel Monitoring Analysis System (TMAS) database, which enhances practical relevance and potential impact on transportation planning and management. The forecasting performance is evaluated with real-world traffic flow data in the state of California, in the western USA. Results show good forecasting accuracy on traffic trends and counts over a one-year period, capturing periodicity and variation. Full article

Localization of mobile robots is crucial for deploying robots in real-world applications such as search and rescue missions. This work aims to develop an accurate localization system applicable to swarm robots equipped only with low-cost monocular vision sensors and visual markers. The system is designed to operate in fully open spaces, without landmarks or support from positioning infrastructures. To achieve this, we propose a localization method based on equilateral triangular formations. By leveraging the geometric properties of equilateral triangles, the accurate two-dimensional position of each participating robot is estimated using one-dimensional lateral distance information between robots, which can be reliably and accurately obtained with a low-cost monocular vision sensor. Experimental and simulation results demonstrate that, as travel time increases, the positioning error of the proposed method becomes significantly smaller than that of a conventional dead-reckoning system, another low-cost localization approach applicable to open environments.
