The research and development of the next generation of supersonic transports (SSTs) meets economic and environmental problems. An SST encounters critical challenges, including the need for low fuel consumption, low noise, and low gas emissions. Currently, the feasibility of developing SSTs is increasing through the application of cutting-edge technologies, such as composite materials, advanced electric systems, sustainable aviation fuel, and innovative design methodologies. The object of this study was to perform the conceptual design of a 50-seat supersonic transport utilizing general conceptual design methods. In estimating weight and flight performance, statistical formulae were correlated with data from civil supersonic and subsonic jet transports. For wing sizing, carpet plots were created to explore the optimal combination of wing aspect ratio and wing loading. The results suggested that by utilizing advanced technologies, such as the use of a composite material for the structure, the maximum takeoff weight can potentially be reduced while still meeting design requirements. The constraint of climb gradient largely affects the maximum takeoff weight, and it is anticipated that flight performance at low speeds will be improved. Full article

This paper provides shadowgraphy and molecular tagging velocimetry (MTV) acquisition results and validates a computational fluid dynamics (CFDs) simulation for an underexpanded supersonic gas jet in a plenum pointed toward a wall with an aligned converging pipe outlet. Flow configurations of this type are encountered in pulse-jet systems for online industrial gas filter regeneration. Although previous CFD validation efforts for pulse-jet systems have relied on static pressure measurements, this work expands the validation data using high-resolution flow visualization and velocimetry techniques. Simulations were performed with an axisymmetric two-dimensional Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes model and are in close agreement with the shadowgraphy and MTV data, including the description of Mach disks, barrel shocks, and reflected shocks in the underexpanded jet. The CFD model was finally applied to study the role of the converging tube downstream of the jet. Full article

Flow ultrasound generators are devices that emit high-frequency sound waves due to the hydrodynamic instability of the supersonic flow. In the electric power industry, such generators are used in arc quenching systems of high-voltage gas blast circuit breakers. The design of the flow ultrasound generator includes a nozzle and a hollow cylindrical resonator. Self-oscillations of the sealing waves occur when a supersonic gas jet collides with a resonator. This article is devoted to the analysis of the arrester operation, which has design features of flow ultrasound generators. The paper includes both experimental investigations of the proposed spark gap arrester design and mathematical modeling of the processes occurring in it. A description of the methods used is presented, and a comparison of the time dependences of currents and voltages obtained as a result of experimental studies and as a result of calculations is performed in the next section. The calculation results include oscillograms of the voltage and current, and the plasma temperature distribution in the arrester chamber at different moments of time. The investigations show that the presence of a nozzle and resonator leads to an intensification of the gas dynamic effect on the electric arc. Full article

When a motor is accidentally started, the solid particles produced by fuel combustion have impact and erosion effects on the surrounding structure via gas ejection, and the structure of the bulkhead is damaged. Therefore, in this paper, the effect of solid particle phase motion on a bulkhead was investigated. A two-dimensional SST k-ω model was used for the analysis. The grid size of the core area of a supersonic jet was selected as RN/24 by the calculation accuracy, and the resources and time consumption of the calculation were comprehensively considered. Based on the simulation of supersonic impact jets, the influence of the phase motion of solid particles was introduced, and the impact of a two-phase jet field on a wall was investigated. The addition of a particle phase created a hysteresis effect on the airflow, changing the shock structure of the pure gas-phase flow field. The rebound of the particle phase at the wall caused the waves in front of the wall to move forward and the stagnation bubble structures to disappear in some cases. The particle aggregation degree and collision angle would affect the particle erosion rate of solid bulkheads. The increase in particle jet impingement distance would change the distribution of particle aggregation and would influence the distribution of wall particle erosion rate and deposition rate. This paper would provide theoretical and engineering guidance for the safety protection design of magazines, which is of great significance for the safety assurance of ship magazines. Full article

The nozzle, as a critical jet component in dry powder fire extinguishing systems, significantly affects jet characteristics through its geometric configuration. To explore the influence of structural parameters on ultrafine dry powder gas-solid two-phase jet characteristics, a bidirectional coupled numerical model based on the SST k-ω turbulence model and the Discrete Phase Model is employed. This study examines how variations in the semi-expansion angle (α) and semi-contraction angle (β) of the nozzle affect compressible gas flow behavior and particle distribution trajectories through a combination of simulations and experiments. The results indicate that when α = 2°, the gas jet is in an under-expanded state, leading to increased particle dispersion due to the stripping effect of the surrounding high-speed airflow. Within the range of x = 0–180 mm, the dry powder exhibits a diffusion trend. When α = 4.5°, the gas jet core region is the longest, providing optimal particle acceleration. Under constant inlet pressure, reducing α enhances particle collimation. The reduction of α alters the gas jet state, with α = 2° showing better powder diffusion compared to α = 6°. However, an excessively small α is detrimental to increasing the range of dry powder. With consistent structural parameters, the diffusion and range of dry powder remain the same across different β values, and variations in β have a relatively minor impact on supersonic jet characteristics. These findings offer theoretical guidance for optimizing and improving nozzles in ultrafine dry powder fire extinguishing systems. Full article

Creating a high-quality aircraft engine is closely connected to the problem of obtaining the jet flow characteristics that appear while an aircraft’s engine is in operation. As natural experiments are costly, studying turbulent jets by numerical simulation appears practical and acute. Biconic nozzle supersonic jet flow is the research subject of this article. A compression and expansion train of waves called barrels were formed in the jet flow at preset conditions. The simulation was performed on an unstructured numerical grid. In order to enhance the calculation accuracy in the shock-wave domain, a hybrid gradient computation scheme and numerical grid static adaptation method were applied in the regions of gas-dynamic values’ significant differential. This approach resulted in a description of nozzle supersonic gas flow structure. It was shown that building local refinement when using a static adaptation numerical grid contributed to improving the accuracy of determining shock waves’ fronts. In addition, this approach facilitated the identification of the Mach disk in the flow when using an unstructured grid, allowing for calculation schemes not higher than a second-order of accuracy. Printed circuit boards (PCBs) are the main components of e-waste. In order to reduce the negative impact of waste PCBs on human health and the environment, they must be properly disposed of. A new method is demonstrated for recycling waste PCBs. It is referred to as the high-temperature thermo-mechano-chemical gasification (TMCG) of PCBs by the detonation-born gasification agent (GA), which is a blend of H2O and CO2 heated to a temperature above 2000 °C. The GA is produced in a pulsed detonation gun (PDG) operating on a near-stoichiometric methane–oxygen mixture. The PDG operates in a pulsed mode producing pulsed supersonic jets of GA and pulsed shock waves possessing a huge destructive power. When the PDG is attached to a compact flow reactor filled with waste PCBs, the PCBs are subject to the intense thermo-mechano-chemical action of both strong shock waves and high-temperature supersonic jets of GA in powerful vortical structures established in the flow reactor. The shock waves grind waste PCBs into fine particles, which undergo repeated involvement and gasification in the high-temperature vortical structures of the GA. Demonstration experiments show full (above 98%) gasification of the 1 kg batch of organic matter in a setup operation time of less than 350 s. The gaseous products of PCB gasification are mainly composed of CO2, CO, H2, N2, and CH4, with the share of flammable gas components reaching about 45 vol%. The solid residues appear in the form of fine powder with visible metal inclusions of different sizes. All particles in the powder freed from the visible metal inclusions possess a size less than 300–400 μm, including a large fraction of sizes less than 100 μm. The powder contains Sn, Pb, Cu, Ni, Fe, In, Cd, Zn, Ca, Si, Al, Ti, Ni, and Cl. Among these substances, Sn (10–20 wt%), Pb (5–10 wt%), and Cu (up to 1.5 wt%) are detected in the maximum amounts. In the powder submitted for analysis, precious elements Ag, Au, and Pt are not detected. Some solid mass (about 20 wt% of the processed PCBs) is removed from the flow reactor with the escaping gas and is partly (about 10 wt%) trapped by the cyclones in the exhaust cleaning system. Metal inclusions of all visible sizes accumulate only in the flow reactor and are not detected in powder samples extracted from the cyclones. The gasification degree of the solid residues extracted from the cyclones ranges from 76 to 91 wt%, i.e., they are gasified only partly. This problem will be eliminated in future work. Full article

An approach based on the OpenFOAM library has been developed to solve a high-speed, multicomponent mixture of a reacting, compressible flow. This work presents comprehensive validation of the newly developed solver, called compressibleCentralReactingFoam, with different supersonic flows, including shocks, expansion waves, and turbulence–combustion interaction. The comparisons of the simulation results with experimental and computational data confirm the fidelity of this solver for problems involving multicomponent high-speed reactive flows. The gas dynamics of turbulence–chemistry interaction are modeled using a partially stirred reactor formulation and provide promising results to better understand the complex physics involved in supersonic combustors. A time-scale analysis based on local Damköhler numbers reveals different regimes of turbulent combustion. In the core of the jet flow, the Damköhler number is relatively high, indicating that the reaction time scale is smaller than the turbulent mixing time scale. This means that the combustion is controlled by turbulent mixing. In the shear layer, where the heat release rate and the scalar dissipation rate have the highest value, the flame is stabilized due to finite rate chemistry with small Damköhler numbers and a limited fraction of fine structure. This solver allows three-dimensional gas dynamic simulation of high-speed multicomponent reactive flows relevant to practical combustion applications. Full article

A two-way coupled model between polydisperse particle phases with compressible gases and a density-based coupling implicit solution method, combining the third-order MUSCL with QUICK spatial discretization scheme and the second-order temporal discretization scheme, are constructed based on the discrete-phase model (DPM) and the stochastic wander model (DRWM) in the Eulerian–Lagrangian framework in conjunction with a unitary particulate source (PSIC) approach and the SST k-ω turbulence model. The accuracy of the numerical prediction method is verified using previous supersonic nozzle gas-solid two-phase flow experiments. Numerical simulation of a two-phase jet of dry powder extinguishing agent gas with pilot-type supersonic nozzle was performed to analyze the influence of geometrical parameters, such as the length ratio rL and the area ratio rA of the main nozzle on the two-phase flow field, as well as on the jet performance indexes, such as the particle mean velocity vp,a, velocity inhomogeneity Φvp, particle dispersion Ψp, particle mean acceleration ap,a, etc. By analyzing the parameters, we indicate the requirements for the combination of jet performance metrics for different flame types such as penetrating, spreading, and dispersing. This study is a further development of our “Proposal of a new double-nozzle technique for in-gas-jet laser resonance ionization spectroscopy” paper published in the journal Atoms earlier this year. Here, we propose equipping the double-nozzle technique with the RF-only funnel and RF-buncher placed in a gas-jet chamber at a 70 mm distance downstream of the double-nozzle exit. It allows for highly effective extraction into vacuum heavy ion beams, produced in two-steps laser resonance ionization in the argon supersonic jet. We explored the operation of this new full version of the double-nozzle technique through detailed gas dynamic and Monte Carlo trajectory simulations, with the results presented and discussed. In particular, our calculations showed that more than 80% of all nobelium-254 neutral atoms, extracted by argon flow from the gas-stopping cell, can then be extracted into vacuum in a form of pulsed ion beam having low transverse and longitudinal emittance. High-speed gas/vapour jets injected into a cross-moving sonic liquid signifies a vital phenomenon which bears useful applications in environmental and energy processes. In the present experimental study, a pulsating jet of supersonic steam was injected into cross-flowing water. Circulation zones of opposite vorticity owing to the interaction between the steam jet and cross-water flow were found. However, a large circulation appeared in front of the nozzle exit. Also, most small circulation regions were observed at higher water-flow rates (>2 m3/s). Among the prime mixing variables (i.e., turbulence kinetic energy (TKE) and Reynolds shear stress (RSS)), the RSS estimations backed a small diffusive phenomenon within a region far from the nozzle exit. Further information extracted from the PIV images indicated the existence of Kelvin–Helmholtz (KH) instabilities. The counter-rotating vortex pairs (CVPs) appeared to be significant in the region close to the nozzle exit, and they exhibited leeward side folds. Moreover, the effects of the operating conditions on the pressure recovery and mixing efficiency as well as the penetration and the separation height were evaluated to determine the optimisation of the phenomenon. By applying extreme difference analysis, the mixing efficiency was found as the most influential parameter. Full article

To explore the complex flow field and noise characteristics of underwater high-speed gas jets, the mixture multiphase model, large eddy simulation method, and Ffowcs Williams–Hawking (FW–H) acoustic model were used for simulations, and the numerical methods were validated by the gas jet noise experimental results. The results revealed that during the initial stages, the jet collided with the water surface and created low-pressure high-temperature gas bubbles, accompanied by much high-frequency noise. When the jet reached its maximum length, its impact weakened, the bubble broke, the jet transformed into a conical shape, and the jet noise changed from high- to low-frequency. The pressure fluctuation peaked near the position at which the Mach number reached 1, indicating that the jet was the most unstable at the sonic point. Additionally, at low frequencies, the sound pressure levels between jets with different nozzle pressure ratios were similar, whereas above 400 Hz, under-expanded jets had higher sound pressure levels. This paper provides theoretical guidance for the study of underwater jet noise. Full article

Supersonic jets of metal vapors with carrier gas are promising for producing nanostructured metal films at relatively low source temperatures and high deposition rates. However, the effects of the carrier gas on the jet composition and expansion dynamics, as well as on film properties, remain virtually unexplored. In this work, the free-jet expansion of a mixture of silver vapor with helium in a rarefied regime at an initial temperature of 1373 K is investigated through mass spectrometry and direct-simulation Monte Carlo methods. Introducing the carrier gas into the source is found to result in a transition from a collisionless to a collision-dominated expansion regime and dramatic changes in the Ag jet, which becomes denser, faster, and more forward-directed. The changes are shown to be favorable for the formation of small Ag clusters and film deposition. At a fairly high helium flow, silver Ag2 dimers are observed in the jet, both in the experiment and the simulations, with a mole fraction reaching 0.1%. The terminal velocities of silver atoms and dimers are nearly identical, indicating that the clusters are likely formed due to the condensation of silver vapor in the expanding jet. A high potential of supersonic Ag-He jets for the deposition of nanostructured silver films is demonstrated. The deposited jet Ag2 dimers appear to serve as nucleation centers and, thus, allow for controlling the size of the produced surface nanostructures. Full article

A new idea of nosebleed air jets with strong coupled internal and external flow is put forward using the lateral jet control principle to improve the maneuverability and fast reaction capabilities of hypersonic vehicles. The hypersonic vehicle’s nose stagnant high-pressure and high-temperature gas is utilized as the drive source for long-term jet control. The significant coupled jet interaction of the internal and external flow changes the aerodynamic characteristics. As a result, the structure is basic and does not rely on any external source to achieve flight attitude control. The complicated flow characteristics of the nosebleed jet in supersonic crossflow surrounding the vehicle were numerically and experimentally investigated. The jet interaction characteristics and the aerodynamic characteristic changes generated by the nosebleed air jet are verified by comparing the flow field with and without the jet. Results indicate that the nosebleed air jet alters the center-of-pressure coefficient, which is subsequently coupled with the interference aerodynamic force. This results in a variation in pitch moment. The jet decreases the pitching moment coefficient when compared with the case without a jet. It is probable that combining nosebleed air jets with model centroid adjustment yields an optimal trim angle of attack. Full article

This paper proposes a new double-nozzle technique for in-gas-jet laser resonance ionization spectroscopy. We explored the functionality of this new technique through detailed gas dynamic and Monte Carlo atom-trajectory simulations, in which results are presented and discussed. The results of similar computer simulations for JetRIS setup (as a typical representative of the conventional in-gas-jet technique nowadays) are also presented and discussed. The direct comparison of calculation results for the proposed new technique with the conventional one shows that the double-nozzle technique has many advantages compared with the one used in the JetRIS setup at GSI for future high-resolution laser spectroscopic study of heaviest elements. To fully implement the proposed new technique in all existing (or under construction) setups for in-gas-jet laser resonance ionization spectroscopy, it will be enough to replace the used supersonic nozzle with the miniature double-nozzle device described in the paper.
