This study presents a novel one-dimensional solution method to demonstrate the effects of fuel composition and channel roughness on phase-change heat transfer in spiral regenerative cooling systems. The calculated models are grounded in an experimental correlation of liquefied natural gas (LNG) flow boiling, and their accuracy is validated through ignition experiments conducted on a 1 kg/s-class thrust chamber. The experimental data shows that the physical characteristics of LNG contribute to an extended reach within the two-phase region, resulting in a calculated pressure drop that exceeds that of pure liquid methane. Variations in surface roughness influence the pressure drop by altering the frictional coefficient. Specifically, an increase in surface roughness from 2 µm to 8 µm results in a 47.8% rise in pressure drop. The proposed model demonstrates high accuracy, with deviations in the coolant temperature rise and the pressure drop being less than 9.0% and 7.6%, respectively, when compared to experimental data. The findings serve as an engineering guide for designing and optimizing heat transfer in LOX/LNG rocket engine cooling systems. Full article

As the key technology of space exploration, space power has been a major area of international research focus. A lot of research work has been carried out around the world for the space nuclear reactor using the heat pipe, liquid metal and gas cooling methods. With the development of molten salt reactor in the Generation IV reactor system, molten salt dissolving fissile material and acting as a coolant at the same time has become a new cooling scheme, which provides new ideas for the design of space nuclear reactors. In this study, a novel reactor, the liquid-solid dual-fuel space nuclear reactor (LSSNR) was preliminarily proposed, combining the molten salt fuel and cross-shaped spiral solid fuel to achieve the design goals of 30-year lifetime and an active core weight of less than 200 kg. Monte Carlo neutron transport code OpenMC based on ENDF/B-VII.1 library was employed for neutronics design in the aspect of fuel type, cladding material, reflector material and the spectral shift absorber. Then, the thickness of the control drum absorber was optimized to meet the requirement of the sufficient shutdown margin, lower solid fuel enrichment, and 30-effective-full power-years (EFPY) operation lifetime. Finally, UC solid fuel with U-235 enrichment of 80.98 wt.% and B4C thickness of 0.75 cm were adopted in LSSNR, and BeO was adopted as the reflector and the matrix material of the control drum. A spectral shift absorber Gd2O3 was used to avoid the subcritical LSSNR returning to criticality in a launch accident. The keff with the control drum in the innermost position is 0.954949, and the keff reaches 1.00592 after 30 EFPY of operation. The total mass of the active core is 158.11 kg. In addition, the thermal-hydraulic feasibility of LSSNR using cross-shaped spiral fuel was analyzed based on a 4/61 reactor core model. The structure of cross-shaped spiral fuel achieves enhanced heat transfer by generating turbulence, which leads to a uniform temperature distribution of the coolant flow field and reduces local temperature peaks. Based on the LSSNR scheme, some neutronic characteristics were analyzed. Results demonstrate that the LSSNR has strongly negative reactivity coefficients due to the thermal expansion of liquid fuel, and the fission gas-induced pressure meets safety requirements. One hundred years after the end of core life, the total radioactivity of reactor core is reduced by 99% and is 7.1305 Ci. Full article

More energy efficient heat pumps can be designed if the industry is able to identify reliable optimization schemes able to predict how a fixed amount of money is best spent on the different individual components. For example, how to optimally design and size the different heat exchangers (HEs) in a heat pump with respect to cost and performance. In this work, different optimization algorithms and HE area integral approximations are compared for heat pumps with two and three HEs, with or without ejectors. Since the main goal is to identify optimal numerical schemes, not optimal designs, heat transfer is simplified, assuming a constant U-value for all HEs, which reduces the computational work significantly. Results show that high-order HE area approximations are 10400 times faster than conventional trapezoidal and adaptive integral methods. High-order schemes with 45 grid points (N) obtained 80100% optimization success rates. For subcritical processes, the LMTD method produced accurate results with N5, but such schemes are unreliable and difficult to extend to real HE models with non-constant U. Results also show that constrained gradient-based optimizations are 10 times faster than particle swarm, and that conventional GA optimizations are extremely inefficient. This study therefore recommends applying high-order HE area approximations and gradient-based optimizations methods developing accurate optimization schemes for the industry, which include realistic heat transfer coefficients. Subcritical water extraction (SWE) is an eco-friendly technology offering advantages such as green solvent and selectivity, especially for extracting bioactive compounds. Despite its potential, limited data exists on upscaling this process. This study investigates the upscaling of SWE by comparing two systems: a commercially available high-pressure system (ASE 200, 32 mL capacity) and high-volume subcritical water extraction (HVSWE) (1000 mL capacity). Medicinal compounds, 6-gingerol and 6-shogaol, were extracted from ginger using SWE at temperatures ranging from 130 °C to 200 °C, at a constant pressure of 3.5 MPa, for 30 min. High-Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) was employed for quantitative analysis. The optimal extraction temperature for 6-gingerol using the high-volume SWE system was 130 °C, yielding 1741.54 ± 0.96 µg/g, whereas ASE 200 achieved optimal extraction at 140 °C with 1957.22 ± 2.55 µg/g. For 6-shogaol, both systems demonstrated an optimal extraction temperature of 170 °C, with yields of 541.78 ± 3.16 µg/g and 1135.23 ± 1.18 µg/g for the high-volume SWE and ASE 200 systems, respectively. These variations stem from the 35-fold difference in capacity, influencing heat and mass transfer during extraction. Thus, scale-up factors must be carefully considered to enhance the mass transfer efficiency and optimize SWE processes at larger scales. Full article

The heat transfer characteristics of evaporative condensers in an R744 air conditioning system were evaluated using the numerical and the experimental methods. Two configurations of condensers were studied: Case 1 with five layers of tubes and Case 2 with eight layers of tubes. In order to evaluate the heat transfer characteristics, the temperature field, the phase change, the pressure distribution, and thermodynamic parameters were considered. For Case 2, it indicated the capability of R744 condensation from the superheated status to the liquified status by analyzing the outlet temperature of the condenser changed from 28.7 °C to 30.3 °C with a change in condensation pressure from 72.6 bar to 68.5 bar. In this study, R744 mass flow rate increases from 14.34 kg/h to 46.08 kg/h, and the pressure drop also increases from 0.23 bar to 0.47 bar for the simulation and 0.4 bar to 0.5 bar for the experiment, respectively. The results indicate that the five-layer configuration causes a higher pressure drop and lower COP than those obtained from the eight-layer one (splitting into two sets for smaller pressure drop). Furthermore, the evaporative condensers using mini tubes that are flooded in the cooling water tank are suitable for the subcritical R744 air conditioning system. In addition, the results obtained from the experimental data are in good agreement with those obtained from the numerical results, with a deviation of less than 5%. Full article

Experiments were conducted to investigate the heat transfer and flow characteristics of the vertical upward smooth and rifled tubes from subcritical to supercritical pressure. The distributions of wall temperature and heat transfer coefficient (HTC) were obtained, and the HTC correlations and friction resistance coefficient correlations were fitted with experimental data. In addition, the influences of heat flux and type of tube on heat transfer performance were analyzed. The research shows that heat flux has different influences on the heat transfer characteristics under different pressures. The increase in heat flux improves the heat transfer characteristics in the nucleate boiling region, yet it leads to the advance in heat transfer deterioration. However, for supercritical water, the increase in heat flux reduces the heat transfer ability. In addition, using the rifled tube not only improves the heat transfer performance, but also inhibits the occurrence of heat transfer deterioration. The fitted correlations have great predictive ability for the heat transfer coefficient and friction resistance coefficient, and the average relative fitting errors are limited to 20%. Full article

Although a lot of research and development has been done to understand and master the major physics involved in cryogenic rocket engines (combustion, feeding systems, heat transfer, stability, efficiency, etc.), the injection system and wall heat transfer remain critical issues due to complex physics, leading to atomization in the subcritical regime and the interactions of hot gases with walls. In such regimes, the fuel is usually injected through a coaxial annulus and triggers the atomization of the central liquid oxidizer jet. This type of injector is often referred to as air-assisted, or coaxial shear, injector, and has been extensively studied experimentally. Including such injection in numerical simulations requires specific models as simulating the atomization process is still out of reach in practical industrial systems. The effect of the injection model on the flame stabilization process and thus on wall heat fluxes is of critical importance when it comes to the design of wall-cooling systems. Indeed, maximizing the heat flux extracted from the chamber can lead to serious gain for the cooling and feeding systems for expander-type feeding cycles where the thermal energy absorbed by the coolant is converted into kinetic energy to drive the turbo-pumps of the feeding system. The methodology proposed in this work to numerically predict the flame topology and associated heat fluxes is based on state-of-the-art methods for turbulent reactive flow field predictions for rocket engines, including liquid injection, combustion model, and wall treatment. For this purpose, high-fidelity Large Eddy Simulation Conjugate Heat Transfer, along with a reduced kinetic mechanism for the prediction of H2/O2 chemistry, liquid injection model LOx sprays, and the use of a specific wall modeling to correctly predict heat flux for large temperature ratio between the bulk flow and the chamber walls, is used. A smooth and a longitudinally ribbed combustor configuration from JAXA are simulated. The coupling strategy ensures a rapid convergence for a limited additional cost compared to a fluid-only simulation, and the wall heat fluxes display a healthy trend compared to the experimental measurements. An increase of heat transfer coherent with the literature is observed when walls are equipped with ribs, compared to smooth walls. The heat transfer enhancement of the ribbed configuration with respect to the smooth walls is coherent with results from the literature, with an increase of around +80% of wall heat flux extracted for the same chamber diameter. Supercritical water gasification (SCWG) is a promising technology for the valorization of wet biomass with a high-water content, which has attracted increasing interest. Many experimental studies have been carried out using conventional heating equipment at lab scale, where researchers try to obtain insight into the process. However, heat transfer from the energy source to the fluid stream entering the reactor may be ineffective, so slow heating occurs that produces a series of undesirable reactions, especially char formation and tar formation. This paper reviews the limitations due to different factors affecting heat transfer, such as low Reynolds numbers or laminar flow regimes, unknown real fluid temperature as this is usually measured on the tubing surface, the strong change in physical properties of water from subcritical to supercritical that boosts a deterioration in heat transfer, and the insufficient mixing, among others. In addition, some troubleshooting and new perspectives in the design of efficient and effective devices are described and proposed to enhance heat transfer, which is an essential aspect in the experimental studies of SCWG to move it forward to a larger scale. The present paper reports on an analytical and numerical study of combined Soret and Dufour effects on thermosolutal convection in a horizontal porous cavity saturated with an electrically conducting binary fluid under a magnetic field. The horizontal walls of the system are subject to vertical uniform fluxes of heat and mass, whereas the vertical walls are assumed to be adiabatic and impermeable. The main governing parameters of the problem are the Rayleigh, the Hartmann, the Soret, the Dufour and the Lewis numbers, the buoyancy ratio, the enclosure aspect ratio, and the normalized porosity of the porous medium. An asymptotic parallel flow approximation is applied to determine the onset of subcritical nonlinear convection. In addition, a linear stability analysis is performed to predict explicitly the thresholds for the onset of stationary, overstable and oscillatory convection, and the Hopf bifurcation as functions of the governing parameters. The combined effect of a magnetic field, Soret and Dufour parameters have a noticeable influence on the intensity of the convective flow, the heat and mass transfer rates, and the thresholds of linear convection. It is found that the imposition of a magnetic field delays the onset of convection and its intensification can lead to the total suppression of the convective currents. The heat transfer rate increases with the Dufour number and decreases with the Soret number and vice versa for the mass transfer rate. Full article

We found that this heat transfer problem could be solved analytically for a heat source with an arbitrary time dependence and different geometries. The method can be used to analyze the response to local thermal perturbations in glass-forming materials, as well as temperature fluctuations during subcritical crystal nucleation and decay. Biodiesels and biolubricants are synthetic esters produced mainly via a transesterification of other esters from bio-based resources, such as plant-based oils or animal fats. Microwave heating has been used to enhance transesterification reaction by converting an electrical energy into a radiation, becoming part of the internal energy acquired by reactant molecules. This method leads to major energy savings and reduces the reaction time by at least 60% compared to a conventional heating via conduction and convection. However, the application of microwave heating technology alone still suffers from non-homogeneous electromagnetic field distribution, thermally unstable rising temperatures, and insufficient depth of microwave penetration, which reduces the mass transfer efficiency. The strategy of integrating multiple technologies for biodiesel and biolubricant production has gained a great deal of interest in applied chemistry. This review presents an advanced transesterification process that combines microwave heating with other technologies, namely an acoustic cavitation, a vacuum, ionic solvent, and a supercritical/subcritical approach to solve the limitations of the stand-alone microwave-assisted transesterification. The combined technologies allow for the improvement in the overall product yield and energy efficiency. This review provides insights into the broader prospects of microwave heating in the production of bio-based products. Full article

This study addresses the performance analysis of a subcritical and supercritical Organic Rankine Cycle (ORC) with the addition of a preheater or superheater integrated with a turbofan engine. This analysis will try to explore the heat transfer throughout the evaporator for the purpose of determining the ORC output power and thermal efficiency. A simplified numerical model of the ORC for waste heat recovery is presented. The model depicts the evaporator by using a distributed model, and includes parameters such as the effectiveness, heat capacity and inlet temperature of the waste heat and the organic fluid. For a given set of initial parameter values, the output power and thermal efficiency, as well as the mass flow rate of the working fluid are acquired by solving the system’s thermodynamic cycle with the aid of MATLAB software. The model is then verified by using data from an industrial waste heat recovery system. The connection between the turbofan engine and the ORC system was established and evaluated by means of Thrust-Specific Fuel Consumption (TSFC) as well as fuel burn. It was found that the supercritical ORC with a preheater and superheater exhibits lower TSFC than the subcritical ORC, whereas the impact of the ORC in terms of waste heat recovery in relation to the environment and sustainability indices is quite small, but still considerable depending on the engine’s weight. It is great significance to understand the mechanism of heat transfer deterioration of supercritical CO2 for heat exchanger design and safe operation in the supercritical CO2 Brayton cycle. Three-dimensional steady-state numerical simulation was performed to investigate the behavior of supercritical CO2 heat transfer in heated vertical up-flow tube with inner diameter di = 10 mm and heated length Lh = 2000 mm. Based on the characteristics of inverted-annular film boiling at subcritical pressure, the heat transfer model of supercritical CO2 flowing in the heated vertical tube was established in this paper. The mechanisms of heat transfer deterioration (HTD) and heat transfer recovery (HTR) for supercritical CO2 were discussed. Numerical results demonstrate that HTD is affected by multiple factors, such as the thickness and property of vapor-like film near the wall, the turbulence intensity near the interface between liquid-like and vapor-like, and in the liquid-like core region as well as the distribution of radial velocity vector. Among the above factors, the change of turbulent kinetic energy caused by the buoyancy effect seems to be a more important contributor to HTD and HTR. Furthermore, the influences of heat flux and mass flux on the distribution of wall temperature were analyzed, respectively. The reasons for the difference in wall temperature at different heat fluxes and mass fluxes were explained by capturing detailed thermal physical properties and turbulence fields. The present investigation can provide valuable information for the design optimization and safe operation of a supercritical CO2 heat exchanger. Full article

The porous structure of oil shale plays a vital role in heat transfer and mass transport. In this study, the pore evolution of oil shale samples during sub-critical water extraction was investigated by scanning electron microscope (SEM), N2 adsorption/desorption, and low field nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR). The following results were obtained: (1) With increased extraction time and extraction temperature, the yield of bitumen increased, pores in spent samples obviously developed and extended to the inner of the shale matrix, and their pore size gradually increased from the nano to micron size; (2) Pore volume and surface area of mesopores increased with increasing yield, indicating that the extraction of organic matter improves the development of organic matter pores distributed in mesopores; (3) The formation of secondary organic matter pores primarily contributes to the increment of pore volume in oil shale samples. The diameter of kerogen may range from 100 to 1600 nm; (4) Fractures probably propagated parallel to the bedding direction, and their evolution led to an initial increase in the total pore volume followed by a decrease. This is likely because fractures will be strongly compacted by pressure due to the weakening of inner support after more organic matter is extracted. Full article

Significant differences in the heat transfer behaviors of supercritical carbon dioxide in a heated channel have been observed at different mass fluxes. At low mass fluxes, a unique heat transfer characteristic is accompanied by a monotonously smooth temperature variation without any temperature peak, even though the ratio of heat flux to mass flux (q/G) is high. In this study, experimental and numerical investigations explore the hidden mechanism of the peculiar heat transfer characteristics of supercritical carbon dioxide at low mass fluxes in vertically upward tubes with inside diameters (ID) of 5 mm. The range of operating conditions examined within the study include a mass flux (G) between 0–200 kg/m2s, and a heat flux (q) of up to 120 kW/m2. The parametric effects within these experimental conditions were analyzed on the basis of the obtained heat transfer data. Furthermore, a qualitative modeling force analysis and quantitative numerical simulation of vertical flow at low mass flux reveal the heat transfer mechanism for these temperature profiles. In addition, the distribution of flow parameters and thermo-physical properties (such as shear stress, density, and specific heat) in the near-wall region were also studied. It is found that the heat transfer behavior of supercritical CO2 at low mass flux is similar to “film boiling” at subcritical pressure, where “vapor-like” fluid occupies the sublayer region. Due to reduced buoyancy, the fluid does not cause enough mixing/instability to bring it to the bulk flow. Full article
