This study proposes the SMR Smart Net-Zero City (SSNC) framework—a scalable model for achieving carbon neutrality by integrating Small Modular Reactors (SMRs), renewable energy sources, and sector coupling within a microgrid architecture. As deploying renewables alone would require economically and technically impractical energy storage systems, SMRs provide a reliable and flexible baseload power source. Sector coupling systems—such as hydrogen production and heat generation—enhance grid stability by absorbing surplus energy and supporting the decarbonization of non-electric sectors. The core contribution of this study lies in its real-time data emulation framework, which overcomes a critical limitation in the current energy landscape: the absence of operational data for future technologies such as SMRs and their coupled hydrogen production systems. As these technologies are still in the pre-commercial stage, direct physical integration and validation are not yet feasible. To address this, the researchers leveraged real-time data from an existing commercial microgrid, specifically focusing on the import of grid electricity during energy shortfalls and export during solar surpluses. These patterns were repurposed to simulate the real-time operational behavior of future SMRs (ProxySMR) and sector coupling loads. This physically grounded simulation approach enables high-fidelity approximation of unavailable technologies and introduces a novel methodology to characterize their dynamic response within operational contexts. A key element of the SSNC control logic is a day–night strategy: maximum SMR output and minimal hydrogen production at night, and minimal SMR output with maximum hydrogen production during the day—balancing supply and demand while maintaining high SMR utilization for economic efficiency. The SSNC testbed was validated through a seven-day continuous operation in Busan, demonstrating stable performance and approximately 75% SMR utilization, thereby supporting the feasibility of this proxy-based method. Importantly, to the best of our knowledge, this study represents the first publicly reported attempt to emulate the real-time dynamics of a net-zero city concept based on not-yet-commercial SMRs and sector coupling systems using live operational data. This simulation-based framework offers a forward-looking, data-driven pathway to inform the development and control of next-generation carbon-neutral energy systems. Full article

Taconis oscillations represent spontaneous excitation of acoustic modes in tubes with large temperature gradients in cryogenic systems. In this study, Taconis oscillations in hydrogen and helium systems are enhanced with a porous material resulting in a standing-wave thermoacoustic engine. A theoretical model is developed using the thermoacoustic software DeltaEC, version v6.4b2.7, to predict system performance, and an experimental apparatus is constructed for engine characterization. The low-amplitude thermoacoustic model predicts the pressure amplitude, frequency, and temperature gradient required for excitation of the standing-wave system. Experimental measurements, including the onset temperature ratio, acoustic pressure amplitudes, and frequencies, are recorded for different stack materials and geometries. The findings indicate that, independent of stack, hydrogen systems excite at smaller temperature differentials than helium (because of different properties such as lower viscosity for hydrogen), and the stack geometry and material affect the onset temperature ratio. However, pressure amplitude in the excited states varies minimally. Initial measurements are also conducted in a cooling setup with an added regenerator. The configuration with stainless-steel mesh screens produces a small cryogenic refrigeration effect with a decrease in temperature of about 1 K. The reported characterization of a Taconis-based thermoacoustic engine can be useful for the development of novel thermal management systems for cryogenic storage vessels, including refrigeration and pressurization. Minimizing carbon dioxide emissions is crucial due to the generation of energy from fossil fuels. The significance of carbon capture and storage (CCS) technology, which is highly successful in mitigating carbon emissions, has increased. On the other hand, hydrogen is an important energy carrier for storing and transporting energy, and technologies that rely on hydrogen have become increasingly promising as the world moves toward a more environmentally friendly approach. Nevertheless, the integration of CCS technologies into power production processes is a significant challenge, requiring the enhancement of the combined power generation–CCS process. In recent years, there has been a growing interest in process intensification (PI), which aims to create smaller, cleaner, and more energy efficient processes. The goal of this research is to demonstrate the process intensification potential and to model and simulate a hybrid integrated–intensified adsorptive-membrane reactor process for simultaneous carbon capture and hydrogen production. A comprehensive, multi-scale, multi-phase, dynamic, computational fluid dynamics (CFD)-based process model is constructed, which quantifies the various underlying complex physicochemical phenomena occurring at the pellet and reactor levels. Model simulations are then performed to investigate the impact of dimensionless variables on overall system performance and gain a better understanding of this cyclic reaction/separation process. The results indicate that the hybrid system shows a steady-state cyclic behavior to ensure flexible operating time. A sustainability evaluation was conducted to illustrate the sustainability improvement in the proposed process compared to the traditional design. The results indicate that the integrated–intensified adsorptive-membrane reactor technology enhances sustainability by 35% to 138% for the chosen 21 indicators. The average enhancement in sustainability is almost 57%, signifying that the sustainability evaluation reveals significant benefits of the integrated–intensified adsorptive-membrane reactor process compared to HTSR + LTSR. The usage of fossil fuels has resulted in increasingly severe environmental problems, such as climate change, air pollution, water pollution, etc. Hydrogen energy is considered one of the most promising clean energies to replace fossil fuels due to its pollution-free and high-heat properties. However, the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) remains a critical challenge due to its high overpotential and slow kinetics during water electrolysis for hydrogen production. Electrocatalysts play an important role in lowering the overpotential of OER and promoting the kinetics. Co3O4-based electrocatalysts have emerged as promising candidates for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) due to their favorable catalytic activity and good compatibility compared with precious metal-based electrocatalysts. This review presents a summary of the recent developments in the synthesis strategies and mechanisms of Co3O4-based electrocatalysts for the OER. Various synthesis strategies have been explored to control the size, morphology, and composition of Co3O4 nanoparticles. These strategies enable the fabrication of well-defined nanostructures with enhanced catalytic performance. Additionally, the mechanisms of OER catalysis on Co3O4-based electrocatalysts have been elucidated. Coordinatively unsaturated sites, synergistic effects with other elements, surface restructuring, and pH dependency have been identified as crucial factors influencing the catalytic activity. The understanding of these mechanisms provides insights into the design and optimization of Co3O4-based electrocatalysts for efficient OER applications. The recent advancements discussed in this review offer valuable perspectives for researchers working on the development of electrocatalysts for the OER, with the goal of achieving sustainable and efficient energy conversion and storage systems. Direct electrification and hydrogen utilization represent two key pathways for decarbonizing the glass industry, with their effectiveness subject to adequate furnace design and renewable energy availability. This study presents a techno-economic assessment for optimal solar energy integration in a representative 300 t/d oxyfuel container glass furnace with a specific energy consumption of 4.35 GJ/t. A mixed-integer linear programming formulation is developed to evaluate specific melting costs, carbon emissions, and renewable energy self-consumption and self-production rates across three scenarios: direct solar coupling, battery storage, and a hydrogen-based infrastructure. Battery storage achieves the greatest reductions in specific melting costs and emissions, whereas hydrogen integration minimizes electricity export to the grid. By incorporating capital investment considerations, the study quantifies the cost premiums and capacity requirements under varying decarbonization targets. A combination of 30 MW of solar plant and 9 MW of electric boosting enables the realization of around 30% carbon reduction while increasing total costs by 25%. Deeper decarbonization targets require more advanced systems, with batteries emerging as a cost-effective solution. These findings offer critical insights into the economic and environmental trade-offs, as well as the technical constraints associated with renewable energy adoption in the glass industry, providing a foundation for strategic energy and decarbonization planning. Quinoa protein isolate (QPI) and sodium alginate (SA) have excellent biocompatibility and functional properties, making them promising candidates for food-grade delivery systems. In this study, we developed, for the first time, a QPI/SA complex-stabilized Pickering emulsion for curcumin encapsulation. The coacervation behavior of QPI and SA was investigated from pH 1.6 to 7.5, and the structural and interfacial characteristics of the complexes were analyzed using zeta potential measurements, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and contact angle analysis. The results showed that the formation of QPI/SA complexes was primarily driven by electrostatic interactions, hydrogen bonding, and hydrophobic interactions, with enhanced amphiphilicity observed under optimal conditions (QPI/SA = 5:1, pH 5). The QPI/SA-stabilized Pickering emulsions demonstrated excellent emulsification performance and storage stability, maintaining an emulsification index above 90% after 7 d when prepared with 60% oil phase. In vitro digestion studies revealed stage-specific curcumin release, with sustained release in simulated gastric fluid (21.13%) and enhanced release in intestinal fluid (88.21%). Cytotoxicity assays using HeLa cells confirmed the biocompatibility of QPI/SA complexes (≤500 μg/mL), while curcumin-loaded emulsions exhibited dose-dependent anticancer activity. These findings suggest that QPI/SA holds significant potential for applications in functional foods and oral delivery systems. Full article

This work proposes a new method to refill fuel cell electric vehicle hydrogen tanks from a storage system in hydrogen refueling stations. The new method uses the storage tanks in cascade to supply hydrogen to the refueling station dispensers. This method reduces the hydrogen compressor power requirement and the energy consumption for refilling the vehicle tank; therefore, the proposed alternative design for hydrogen refueling stations is feasible and compatible with low-intensity renewable energy sources like solar photovoltaic, wind farms, or micro-hydro plants. Additionally, the cascade method supplies higher pressure to the dispenser throughout the day, thus reducing the refueling time for specific vehicle driving ranges. The simulation shows that the energy saving using the cascade method achieves 9% to 45%, depending on the vehicle attendance. The hydrogen refueling station design supports a daily vehicle attendance of 9 to 36 with a complete refueling process coverage. The carried-out simulation proves that the vehicle tank achieves the maximum attainable pressure of 700 bars with a storage system of six tanks. The data analysis shows that the daily hourly hydrogen demand follows a sinusoidal function, providing a practical tool to predict the hydrogen demand for any vehicle attendance, allowing the planners and station designers to resize the elements to fulfill the new requirements. The proposed system is also applicable to hydrogen ICE vehicles. Full article

Hydrogen energy holds immense potential to address the global energy crisis and environmental challenges. However, its large-scale application is severely hindered by the lack of efficient hydrogen storage materials. This study systematically investigates the H2 adsorption properties of intrinsic C26 fullerene and Li-decorated C26 fullerene using density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The results reveal that Li atoms preferentially bind to the H5-5 site of C26, driven by significant electron transfer (0.90 |e|) from Li to C26. This electron redistribution modulates the electronic structure of C26, as evidenced by projected density of states (PDOS) analysis, where the p orbitals of C atoms near the Fermi level undergo hybridization with Li orbitals, enhancing the electrostatic environment for H2 adsorption. For Li-decorated C26, the average adsorption energy and consecutive adsorption energy decrease as more H2 molecules are adsorbed, indicating a gradual weakening of adsorption strength and signifying a saturation limit of three H2 molecules. Charge density difference and PDOS analyses further demonstrate that H2 adsorption induces synergistic electron transfer from both Li (0.89 |e| loss) and H2 (0.01 |e| loss) to C26 (0.90 |e| gain), with orbital hybridization between H s orbitals, C p orbitals, and Li orbitals stabilizing the adsorbed system. This study aimed to provide a comprehensive understanding of the microscopic mechanism underlying Li-enhanced H2 adsorption on C26 fullerene and offer insights into the rational design of metal-decorated fullerene-based systems for efficient hydrogen storage. The maritime sector’s transition to sustainable energy is critical for achieving global carbon neutrality, with container terminals representing a key focus due to their high energy consumption and emissions. This study explores the potential of hydrogen energy as a decarbonization solution for port operations, using the Chuanshan Port Area of Ningbo Zhoushan Port (CPANZP) as a case study. Through a comprehensive analysis of hydrogen production, storage, refueling, and consumption technologies, we demonstrate the feasibility and benefits of integrating hydrogen systems into port infrastructure. Our findings highlight the successful deployment of a hybrid “wind-solar-hydrogen-storage” energy system at CPANZP, which achieves 49.67% renewable energy contribution and an annual reduction of 22,000 tons in carbon emissions. Key advancements include alkaline water electrolysis with 64.48% efficiency, multi-tier hydrogen storage systems, and fuel cell applications for vehicles and power generation. Despite these achievements, challenges such as high production costs, infrastructure scalability, and data integration gaps persist. The study underscores the importance of policy support, technological innovation, and international collaboration to overcome these barriers and accelerate the adoption of hydrogen energy in ports worldwide. This research provides actionable insights for port operators and policymakers aiming to balance operational efficiency with sustainability goals. Full article

In response to increasingly stringent emission regulations, low-carbon fuels have received significant attention as sustainable energy sources for internal combustion engines. This study investigates four representative low-carbon fuels, methane, methanol, hydrogen, and ammonia, by systematically summarizing their combustion characteristics and emission profiles, along with a review of existing after-treatment technologies tailored to each fuel type. For methane engines, unburned hydrocarbon (UHC) produced during low-temperature combustion exhibits poor oxidation reactivity, necessitating integration of oxidation strategies such as diesel oxidation catalyst (DOC), particulate oxidation catalyst (POC), ozone-assisted oxidation, and zoned catalyst coatings to improve purification efficiency. Methanol combustion under low-temperature conditions tends to produce formaldehyde and other UHCs. Due to the lack of dedicated after-treatment systems, pollutant control currently relies on general-purpose catalysts such as three-way catalyst (TWC), DOC, and POC. Although hydrogen combustion is carbon-free, its high combustion temperature often leads to elevated nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions, requiring a combination of optimized hydrogen supply strategies and selective catalytic reduction (SCR)-based denitrification systems. Similarly, while ammonia offers carbon-free combustion and benefits from easier storage and transportation, its practical application is hindered by several challenges, including low ignitability, high toxicity, and notable NOx emissions compared to conventional fuels. Current exhaust treatment for ammonia-fueled engines primarily depends on SCR, selective catalytic reduction-coated diesel particulate filter (SDPF). Emerging NOx purification technologies, such as integrated NOx reduction via hydrogen or ammonia fuel utilization, still face challenges of stability and narrow effective temperatures. Full article

This study investigates ground deformations in the southeastern Po Plain (northern Italy), focusing on the Bologna area—a densely populated region affected by natural and anthropogenic subsidence. Ground deformations in the area result from geological processes (e.g., sediment compaction and tectonic activity) and human activities (e.g., ground water production and underground gas storage—UGS). We apply a multidisciplinary approach integrating subsurface geology, ground water production, advanced differential interferometry synthetic aperture radar—DInSAR, gas storage data, and land use information to characterize and analyze the spatial and temporal variations in vertical ground deformations. Seasonal and trend decomposition using loess (STL) and cluster analysis techniques are applied to historical DInSAR vertical time series, targeting three representatives areas close to the city of Bologna. The main contribution of the study is the attempt to correlate the lateral extension of ground water bodies with seasonal ground deformations and water production data; the results are validated via knowledge of the geological characteristics of the uppermost part of the Po Plain area. Distinct seasonal patterns are identified and correlated with ground water production withdrawal and UGS operations. The results highlight the influence of superficial aquifer characteristics—particularly the geometry, lateral extent, and hydraulic properties of sedimentary bodies—on the ground movements behavior. This case study outlines an effective multidisciplinary approach for subsidence characterization providing critical insights for risk assessment and mitigation strategies, relevant for the future development of CO2 and hydrogen storage in depleted reservoirs and saline aquifers. However, potential adverse effects such as ground movements, leakage, seismic activity, and environmental pollution are observed. Existing research focuses on monitoring subsurface elements of the storage, while on the surface it is limited to ground movement observations. The review was carried out based on 191 research contributions related to geological storage. It emphasizes the importance of monitoring underground gas storage (UGS) sites and their surroundings to ensure sustainable and safe operation. It details surface monitoring methods, distinguishing geodetic surveys and remote sensing techniques. Remote sensing, including active methods such as InSAR and LiDAR, and passive methods of multispectral and hyperspectral imaging, provide valuable spatiotemporal information on UGS sites on a large scale. The review covers modelling and prediction methods used to analyze the environmental impacts of UGS, with data-driven models employing geostatistical tools and machine learning algorithms. The limited number of contributions treating geological storage sites holistically opens perspectives for the development of complex approaches capable of monitoring and modelling its environmental impacts. Impact of Hydrogen Release on Accidental Consequences in Deep-Sea Floating Photovoltaic Hydrogen Production Platforms

Hydrogen is a potential key component of a carbon-neutral energy carrier and an input to marine industrial processes. This study examines the consequences of coupled hydrogen release and marine environmental factors during floating photovoltaic hydrogen production (FPHP) system failures. A validated three-dimensional numerical model of FPHP comprehensively characterizes hydrogen leakage dynamics under varied rupture diameters (25, 50, 100 mm), transient release duration, dispersion patterns, and wind intensity effects (0–20 m/s sea-level velocities) on hydrogen–air vapor clouds. FLACS-generated data establish the concentration–dispersion distance relationship, with numerical validation confirming predictive accuracy for hydrogen storage tank failures. The results indicate that the wind velocity and rupture size significantly influence the explosion risk; 100 mm ruptures elevate the explosion risk, producing vapor clouds that are 40–65% larger than 25 mm and 50 mm cases. Meanwhile, increased wind velocities (>10 m/s) accelerate hydrogen dilution, reducing the high-concentration cloud volume by 70–84%. Hydrogen jet orientation governs the spatial overpressure distribution in unconfined spaces, leading to considerable shockwave consequence variability. Photovoltaic modules and inverters of FPHP demonstrate maximum vulnerability to overpressure effects; these key findings can be used in the design of offshore platform safety. This study reveals fundamental accident characteristics for FPHP reliability assessment and provides critical insights for safety reinforcement strategies in maritime hydrogen applications. In this work, the synthesis and structural characterization of the smallest possible member of the family of bis-functionalized {MnMo6O24} Anderson–Evans polyoxometalates (POMs) is reported. The synthesis of the title compound TBA3{[HC(CH2O)3]2MnMo6O18} (1) was accomplished by using trimethylolmethane as the capping unit (TBA: tetra(n-butyl)ammonium, n-Bu4N+). The molecular structure of the organic–inorganic POM gave rise to yet undisclosed 1H-NMR features, which are discussed thoroughly. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis revealed a highly regular 3D packing of the polyoxoanions within a matrix of TBA cations. The hybrid POM is of particular interest regarding potential applications in photocatalysis (i.e., hydrogen evolution) and energy storage. Thus, the electrochemical and thermal properties of 1 are also analyzed. Full article

The large-scale integration of volatile and intermittent renewables necessitates greater flexibility in the power system. Improving this flexibility is key to achieving a high proportion of renewable energy consumption. In this context, the scientific selection of energy storage technology is of great significance for the construction of new power systems. From the perspective of life cycle cost analysis, this paper conducts an economic evaluation of four mainstream energy storage technologies: lithium iron phosphate battery, pumped storage, compressed air energy storage, and hydrogen energy storage, and quantifies and compares the life cycle cost of multiple energy storage technologies. On this basis, a three-dimensional multi-energy storage comprehensive evaluation indicator system covering economy, technology, and environment is constructed. The improved grade one method and entropy weight method are used to determine the comprehensive performance, and the fuzzy comprehensive evaluation method is used to carry out multi-attribute decision-making on the multi-energy storage technology in the source, network, and load scenarios. The results show that pumped storage and compressed air energy storage have significant economic advantages in long-term and large-scale application scenarios. With its fast response ability and excellent economic and technical characteristics, the lithium iron phosphate battery has the smallest score change rate (15.2%) in various scenarios, showing high adaptability. However, hydrogen energy storage technology still lacks economic and technological maturity, and breakthrough progress is still needed for its wide application in various application scenarios in the future.
