In the present paper, impedance spectroscopy was employed to study the corrosion and anodic oxidation of stainless steel (AISI 316L at 280 °C/9 MPa) in contact with the boron-free primary coolant of a small modular reactor at two levels of KOH concentration. Analysis of impedance spectra with a distribution of relaxation times revealed contributions from the oxide layer and its interface with the coolant. Glow-Discharge Optical Emission Spectroscopy (GDOES) was used to estimate the thickness and elemental composition of the formed oxides. A quantitative interpretation of the impedance data using the Mixed-Conduction Model allowed us to estimate the kinetic and transport parameters of oxide growth and dissolution, as well as iron dissolution through oxide. The film thicknesses following exposure agreed with ex-situ analyses. The obtained corrosion and release rates were used for comparison with laboratory and industrial data in nominal pressurized water reactor primary coolants. Full article

The 1.9 billion metric tons of steel globally manufactured in 2023 justify the steel industry’s pivotal role in modern society’s growth. Considering the rapid development of countries that have not fully taken part in the global market, such as Africa, steel production is expected to increase in the next decade. However, the environmental burden associated with steel manufacturing must be mitigated to achieve sustainable production, which would align with the European Green Deal pathway. Such a burden is associated both with the GHG emissions and with the solid residues arising from steel manufacturing, considering both the integrated and electrical routes. The valorisation of the main steel residues from the electrical steelmaking is the central theme of this work, referring to the steel electric manufacturing in the Dalmine case study. The investigation was carried out from two different points of view, comprising the action of a plasma electric reactor and a RecoDust unit to optimize the recovery of iron and zinc, respectively, being the two main technologies envisioned in the EU-funded research project ReMFra. This work focuses on those preliminary steps required to detect the optimal recipes to consider for such industrial units, such as thermodynamic modelling, testing the mechanical properties of the briquettes produced, and the smelting trials carried out at pilot scale. However, tests for the usability of the dusty feedstock for RecoDust are carried out, and, with the results, some recommendations for pretreatment can be made. The outcomes show the high potential of these streams for metal and mineral recovery. Full article

The production of iron and steel plays a significant role in the anthropogenic carbon footprint, accounting for 7% of global GHG emissions. In the context of CO2 mitigation, the steelmaking industry is looking to potentially replace traditional carbon-based ironmaking processes with hydrogen-based direct reduction of iron ore in shaft furnaces. Before industrialization, detailed modeling and parametric studies were needed to determine the proper operating parameters of this promising technology. The modeling approach selected here was to complement REDUCTOR, a detailed finite-volume model of the shaft furnace, which can simulate the gas and solid flows, heat transfers and reaction kinetics throughout the reactor, with an extension that describes the whole gas circuit of the direct reduction plant, including the top gas recycling set up and the fresh hydrogen production. Innovative strategies (such as the redirection of part of the bustle gas to a cooling inlet, the use of high nitrogen content in the gas, and the introduction of a hot solid burden) were investigated, and their effects on furnace operation (gas utilization degree and total energy consumption) were studied with a constant metallization target of 94%. It has also been demonstrated that complete metallization can be achieved at little expense. These strategies can improve the thermochemical state of the furnace and lead to different energy requirements. Full article

In the energy sector and in other types of industries (cement, iron/steel, chemical and petrochemical), highly roasted coffee ground residue can be used as a source material for producing bioadsorbents suitable for CO2 capture. In this study, a bioadsorbent was produced in a two-step process involving biowaste carbonization and biocarbon activation within a KOH solution. The physicochemical properties of the bioadsorbent were assessed using LECO, TG, SEM, BET and FT-IR methods. Investigating the CO2, O2 and N2 equilibrium adsorption capacity using an IGA analyzer allowed us to calculate CO2 selectivity factors. We assessed the influence of exhaust gas carbon dioxide concentration (16%, 30%, 81.5% and 100% vol.) and adsorption step temperature (25 °C, 50 °C and 75 °C) on the CO2 adsorption capacity of the bioadsorbent. We also investigated its stability and regenerability in multi-step adsorption–desorption using a TG-Vacuum system, simulating the VSA process and applying different pressures in the regeneration step (30, 60 and 100 mbarabs). The tests conducted assessed the possibility of using a produced bioadsorbent for capturing CO2 using the VSA technique. Full article

Carbon capture technologies are largely considered to play a crucial role in meeting the climate change and global warming target set by Net Zero Emission (NZE) 2050. These technologies can contribute to clean energy transitions and emissions reduction by decarbonizing the power sector and other CO2 intensive industries such as iron and steel production, natural gas processing oil refining and cement production where there is no obvious alternative to carbon capture technologies. While the progress of carbon capture technologies has fallen behind expectations in the past, in recent years there has been substantial growth in this area, with over 700 projects at various stages of development. Moreover, there are around 45 commercial carbon capture facilities already in operation around the world in different industrial processes, fuel transformation and power generation. Carbon capture technologies including pre/post-combustion, oxyfuel and chemical looping combustion have been widely exploited in the recent years at different Technology Readiness level (TRL). Although, a large number of review studies are available addressing different carbon capture strategies, however, studies related to the commercial status of the carbon capture technologies are yet to be conducted. In this review article, we summarize the state-of-the-art of different carbon capture technologies applied to different emission sources, focusing on emission reduction, net-zero emission, and negative emission. We also highlight the commercial status of the different carbon capture technologies including economics, opportunities, and challenges. Full article

Thermal control in rolling mills motors is gaining importance as more and more hard-to-deform steel grades are rolled. The capabilities of diagnostics monitoring also expand as digital IIoT-based technologies are adopted. Electrical drives in modern rolling mills are based on synchronous motors with frequency regulation. Such motors are expensive, while their reliability impacts the metallurgical plant output. Hence, developing the on-line temperature monitoring systems for such motors is extremely urgent. This paper presents a solution applying to synchronous motors of the upper and lower rolls in the horizontal roll stand of plate mill 5000. The installed capacity of each motor is 12 MW. According to the digitalization tendency, on-line monitoring systems should be based on digital shadows (coordinate observers) that are similar to digital twins, widely introduced at metallurgical plants. Modern reliability requirements set the continuous temperature monitoring for stator and rotor windings and iron core. This article is the first to describe a method for calculating thermal loads based on the data sets created during rolling. The authors have developed a thermal state observer based on four-mass model of motor heating built using the Simscape Thermal Models library domains that is part of the MATLAB Simulink. Virtual adjustment of the observer and of the thermal model was performed using hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) simulation. The authors have validated the results by comparing the observer’s values with the actual values measured at control points. The discrete masses heating was studied during the rolling cycle. The stator and rotor winding temperature was analysed at different periods. The authors have concluded that the motors of the upper and lower rolls are in a satisfactory condition. The results of the study conducted generally develop the idea of using object-oriented digital shadows for the industrial electrical equipment. The authors have introduced technologies that improve the reliability of the rolling mills electrical drives which accounts for the innovative development in metallurgy. The authors have also provided recommendations on expanded industrial applications of the research results. Full article

Nodular cast iron is one of the most widely used materials in the machine building industry. The main reasons for this are its strength, elongation, and competitive price compared to other steels and metals. The possibility to have a high strength and elongation together is thanks to the spheroidal shape of the graphite inserts in the metal structure of the iron. To exploit these advantages, special treatments such as adding magnesium are used after the melting process but before pouring the metal in the casting mold. Classic technology is called tundish/sandwich technology when ferrosiliconmagnesium alloy in bulk is placed at the bottom of a ladle before filling it with liquid cast iron. In the present article, an alternative technology will be presented where a fesimg alloy is filled in a steel wire and inserted automatically into a ladle. Iron-rich bauxite residue (red mud) is a hazardous alkaline solid waste produced during the production of alumina from high-iron bauxite, which poses severe environmental challenges due to its massive stockpiling and limited utilization. In this study, metallic iron was recovered from high-iron red mud using the smelting reduction process. Thermodynamic analysis results show that an increase in temperature and sodium oxide content, along with an appropriate mass ratio of Al2O3 to SiO2 (A/S) and mass ratio of CaO to SiO2 (C/S), contribute to the enhancement of the liquid phase mass fraction of the slag. During the smelting reduction process of high-iron red mud, iron recoveries for low-alkali high-iron red mud and high-alkali high-iron red mud under optimal conditions were 98.14% and 98.36%, respectively. The metal obtained through reduction meets the industrial standard for steel-making pig iron, which is also confirmed in the pilot-scale experiment. The smelting reduction process of high-iron red mud can be divided into two stages, where the reaction is predominantly governed by interfacial chemical reaction and diffusion control, respectively. The apparent activation energy of high-alkali high-iron red mud is lower than that observed for low-alkali high-iron red mud. The reduced slag can be used as a roadside stone material or cement clinker. This proposed method represents a sustainable process for the comprehensive utilization of high-iron red mud, which also promotes the minimization of red mud. Full article

The efficient simultaneous removal of NOx and CO from sintering flue gas under low-temperature conditions (110–180 °C) in iron and steel enterprises remains a significant challenge in the field of environmental catalysis. In this study, we present an innovative strategy to enhance the performance of CuSmTi catalysts through silver modification, yielding a bifunctional system capable of oxygen structure regulation and demonstrating superior activity for the combined NH3-SCR and CO oxidation reactions under low-temperature, oxygen-rich conditions. The modified AgCuSmTi catalyst achieves complete NO conversion at 150 °C, representing a 50 °C reduction compared to the unmodified CuSmTi catalyst (T100% = 200 °C). Moreover, the catalyst exhibits over 90% N2 selectivity across a broad temperature range of 150–300 °C, while achieving full CO oxidation at 175 °C. A series of characterization techniques, including XRD, Raman spectroscopy, N2 adsorption, XPS, and O2-TPD, were employed to elucidate the Ag-Cu interaction. These modifications effectively optimize the surface physical structure, modulate the distribution of acid sites, increase the proportion of Lewis acid sites, and enhance the activity of lattice oxygen species. As a result, they effectively promote the adsorption and activation of reactants, as well as electron transfer between active species, thereby significantly enhancing the low-temperature performance of the catalyst. Furthermore, in situ DRIFTS investigations reveal the reaction mechanisms involved in NH3-SCR and CO oxidation over the Ag-modified CuSmTi catalyst. The NH3-SCR process predominantly follows the L-H mechanism, with partial contribution from the E-R mechanism, whereas CO oxidation proceeds via the MvK mechanism. This work demonstrates that Ag modification is an effective approach for enhancing the low-temperature performance of CuSmTi-based catalysts, offering a promising technical solution for the simultaneous control of NOx and CO emissions in industrial flue gases. The article presents issues related to the melting of cast iron with a limited or zero share of pig iron in the charge. The results of melts conducted in electric induction furnaces are presented. The elimination of pig iron and its replacement with steel or return scrap is highly significant in the context of sustainable production and product life cycle assessment (LCA). The paper presents the results of research carried out during melts conducted under both laboratory and industrial conditions. The chemical composition of the cast iron, its physicochemical properties obtained from the analysis of the cooling curve and its derivative, as well as the structure, were analyzed. It was found that cast iron produced using high-quality steel scrap contains fewer sulfur and phosphorus impurities. However, it was also observed that such cast iron exhibits reduced nucleation ability, which can be improved by applying an inoculation process. Full article

The management of spent foundry sand (SFS) presents environmental and operational challenges for foundries. According to the European Union, European foundries generate approximately 9 million tonnes of SFS annually, mainly from the production of ferrous castings (iron and steel). Nowadays, around 25% of the spent foundry sand in Europe is recycled for specific applications, primarily in the cement industry. However, the presence of chemical residues limits the application of this solution. A possible alternative for reusing the spent foundry sand is its employment as a raw material in the production of compost. Studies in the literature indicate that the amount of chemical residue present in the sand can be reduced through the composting process, making the final product suitable for different purposes. However, information about the implementation of this technology in industrial contexts is lacking. To address this issue, this paper proposes a techno-economic analysis to assess the feasibility of composting SFS on a large scale, using information gathered during the testing phase of the Green Foundry LIFE project. This project explored the reuse of sand from organic and inorganic binder processes to create compost for construction purposes, which allowed for the final product. Since the new BREF (Best Available Techniques Reference Document) introduced by the European Union at the start of 2025 recommends composting SFS as a way to reduce solid waste from foundries, this initial study can represent practical guidance for both researchers and companies evaluating the adoption of this technology. Human development has led to increased production of oil and gas, mainly as energy sources, which, however, are responsible for contamination and metal corrosion in industrial, marine, and terrestrial environments. Lubricating oil, in particular, is widely used in generators and industrial machines in the electric sector and is responsible for contamination not only in industrial environments but also in many terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems. In this context, this study aimed to apply the Starmerella bombicola ATCC 222214 biosurfactant to inhibit metal corrosion in seawater and in an Accelerated Corrosion Chamber (ACC). For this purpose, its toxicity against the microcrustacean Artemia salina, its dispersion capacity, and its ability to promote oil biodegradation in a saline environment were investigated. The biosurfactant, when applied at twice its Critical Micellar Concentration (CMC), caused low mortality (30.0%) of microcrustaceans in a saline environment, and, in its crude form, the biosurfactant ensured the dispersion of no less than 77.56% of residual engine oil in seawater. Oil biodegradation by autochthonous microorganisms reached 94.39% in the presence of the biosurfactant in seawater. Furthermore, the biosurfactant, when used at twice its CMC, acted satisfactorily as a corrosion inhibitor by reducing the mass loss of galvanized iron specimens (plates) in seawater in a static system to only 0.36%. On the other hand, when the biosurfactant was added at the CMC as an atmospheric corrosion inhibitor, the reduction in mass loss of carbon steel plates treated in the ACC was 17.38% compared to the control containing only a biodegradable matrix based on vegetable resin. When the biosurfactant was incorporated into different paints applied to galvanized iron plates placed in contact with the salt spray produced in the ACC, the best result was obtained using the biomolecule at a concentration of 3% in the satin paint, ensuring a plate mass loss (29.236 g/m2) that was almost half that obtained without surfactant (52.967 g/m2). The study indicated the use of yeast biosurfactant as a sustainable alternative in combating the contamination of marine environments and metal corrosion, with the aim of preserving the environment and improving the quality of life in aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems. Microbiologically influenced corrosion (MIC) poses significant challenges in oilfield water injection environments, leading to substantial socioeconomic losses. L245 steel, a low-alloy steel widely used in oil and gas pipelines due to its excellent mechanical properties and cost-effectiveness, remains highly vulnerable to MIC during long-term service. This study uses surface characterization and electrochemical techniques to investigate the corrosion behavior of L245 pipeline steel under short-cycle conditions in a symbiotic environment of iron-oxidizing bacteria (IOB) and Shewanella algae (S. algae). Key findings revealed that localized corrosion of L245 steel was markedly exacerbated under coexisting IOB and S. algae conditions compared to monoculture systems. However, the uniform corrosion rate under symbiosis fell between the rates observed in the individual IOB and S. algae systems. Mechanistically, the enhanced corrosion under symbiotic conditions was attributed to the synergistic electron transfer interaction: IOB exploited electron carriers secreted by S. algae during extracellular electron transfer (EET), which amplified the microbial consortium’s capacity to harvest electrons from the steel substrate. These results emphasize the critical role of interspecies electron exchange in accelerating localized degradation of carbon steel under complex microbial consortia, with implications for developing targeted mitigation strategies in industrial pipelines exposed to similar microbiological environments. The iron and steel industry is a major emitter of carbon. In the context of China’s dual-carbon goals, hydrogen-based reduction ironmaking technology has garnered unprecedented attention. It is considered a crucial approach to reducing carbon dioxide emissions in the steel sector and facilitating the realization of carbon neutrality. This work conducted isothermal thermogravimetric analysis on limonite ore in a N2/H2 atmosphere. The influences of reduction temperature, particle size, and hydrogen partial pressure on the hydrogen reduction reaction process of limonite were investigated. Based on the principles of isothermal thermal analysis kinetics and the unreacted core model for flat-plate particles, the mechanism function and kinetic parameters for the reduction of limonite particles were determined. The research results show that the hydrogen reduction process of limonite ore is influenced by multiple factors, including temperature, hydrogen partial pressure, and particle size. Increasing the reduction temperature and hydrogen partial pressure can significantly speed up the reduction reaction rate and enhance the degree of reduction. The kinetic parameters for the hydrogen reduction of limonite particles were obtained as follows: the reaction activation energy was 44.738 kJ·mol−1, the pre-exponential factor was 31.438 m·s−1, and the rate constant for the hydrogen reduction of limonite was k=31.438×e44.738×1000RTms1. In addition, contour maps were plotted to predict the reaction time and reaction temperature required for a complete reduction of limonite particles of different sizes to iron (Fe) particles under varying hydrogen partial pressures. The research findings can serve as a scientific basis for optimizing hydrogen-based reduction ironmaking technology in the iron and steel industry and achieving carbon neutrality goals. Full article

With rapid urbanization and industrialization, steel in-use stocks (SIUS) have experienced significant growth, playing an important role in urban mining and future renewable resources. Although previous studies have quantified SIUS at the provincial level, a comprehensive understanding of its spatial distribution remains limited. This study uses Henan Province as a case to assess SIUS and its spatial distribution at the provincial level. A spatio-temporal characterization framework is developed to systematically analyze SIUS dynamics, integrating the bottom-up model, the spatial autocorrelation model, the Tapio–LMDI model, and the stock-driven model. The findings show that total SIUS has been continuously increasing, reaching 499.35 Mt in 2023, with the buildings sector being the largest contributor, accounting for 67%. However, due to its large population, per capita SIUS was 5.09 t/cap in 2023, lower than that of China. Spatial analysis reveals significant autocorrelation in per capita SIUS, with notable spatial heterogeneity in its density. Moreover, the average annual growth rate of SIUS is projected to decline from 10% in 2023 to 5% in 2060, suggesting that SIUS in Henan is approaching a saturation phase, consistent with theoretical expectations.
