As artificial intelligence (AI) is increasingly used in classrooms, tutoring systems, and learning platforms, it is essential that these tools are not only powerful, but also easy to understand, fair, and supportive of real learning. Many current AI systems can generate fluent responses or accurate predictions, yet they often fail to clearly explain their decisions, reflect students’ cultural contexts, or give learners and educators meaningful control. This gap can reduce trust and limit the educational value of AI-supported learning. This paper introduces the PEARL framework, a human-centered approach for designing and evaluating explainable AI in education. PEARL is built around five core principles: Pedagogical Personalization (adapting support to learners’ levels and curriculum goals), Explainability and Engagement (providing clear, motivating explanations in everyday language), Attribution and Accountability (making AI decisions traceable and justifiable), Representation and Reflection (supporting fairness, diversity, and learner self-reflection), and Localized Learner Agency (giving learners control over how AI explains and supports them). Unlike many existing explainability approaches that focus mainly on technical performance, PEARL emphasizes how students, teachers, and administrators experience and make sense of AI decisions. The framework is demonstrated through simulated examples using an AI-based tutoring system, showing how PEARL can improve feedback clarity, support different stakeholder needs, reduce bias, and promote culturally relevant learning. The paper also introduces the PEARL Composite Score, a practical evaluation tool that helps assess how well educational AI systems align with ethical, pedagogical, and human-centered principles. This study includes a small exploratory mixed-methods user study (N = 17) evaluating example AI tutor interactions; no live classroom deployment was conducted. Together, these contributions offer a practical roadmap for building educational AI systems that are not only effective, but also trustworthy, inclusive, and genuinely supportive of human learning. Circular economy (CE) strategies in the agri-food sector hold strong potential for reducing waste, enhancing resource efficiency, and promoting sustainable value creation. However, early-stage assessment of innovative valorisation pathways remains challenging due to limited data availability and heterogeneous sustainability trade-offs. This study presents a multi-criteria evaluation tool designed to identify sustainability hotspots and support the preliminary screening of CE solutions based on easily obtainable information. The tool combines a structured literature review with expert-based scoring across environmental (ENV), economic (EC), and social (SOC) dimensions. Its applicability was demonstrated through the following three case studies: (i) reconstitution of cheese approaching expiration, (ii) extraction of polyphenols from grape-wine residues via subcritical water extraction, and (iii) biodegradable mulching film production from grape-wine pomace. Results show that the tool successfully differentiates sustainability performance across value chain areas Residue, Final Product, and Process (RES, FP, and PRO) and reveals critical gaps requiring further investigation. Scenario 3 achieved the higher overall score (69.7%) due to fewer regulatory constraints, whereas Scenarios 1 and 2 (61.2% and 54.5%, respectively) are penalised due to the more regulations for human consumption. The proposed tool offers a practical and efficient method to support researchers and industry stakeholders in identifying CE strategies with the highest potential for sustainable development. This study aims to enhance the value of the Montepulciano d’Abruzzo PDO supply chain by integrating multi-elemental and isotopic profiling with chemometric analysis. The objective is to establish a pilot study for origin authentication, supporting strategic, managerial, and regulatory decision-making for stakeholders in the wine sector. Wine and soil samples from producers in the Abruzzo region were analyzed for 63 elements and selected isotopic ratios using HR-ICP-MS and MC-ICP-MS. Exploratory data analysis, including PCA and clustering, was employed to investigate intrinsic data structure. Variable selection techniques identified the most discriminant markers, and multiple classification models were tested to assess producer-level differentiation. The combined elemental and isotopic dataset showed strong intrinsic structure. Four variables—Mo, 208Pb/206Pb, P, and 87Sr/86Sr—emerged as key discriminants. Quadratic Discriminant Analysis and Artificial Neural Networks achieved 100% accuracy in classifying samples by producer. The results demonstrate that integrating multi-elemental and isotopic data with chemometric tools offers a pilot approach to authenticate wine origin and enhance transparency across the PDO supply chain. Beyond scientific innovation, this study provides a pilot decision support model that can strengthen competitive differentiation, regulatory compliance, and sustainable territorial development, highlighting opportunities for digital transformation in PDO management. To address the problem of the shortage of delivery drivers in the transportation sectors in Japan, this study explores the potential of the crowdshipping concept through the utilization of Shinkansen trains. This concept allows the passengers of the Shinkansen to transport parcels during their journey in exchange for monetary rewards. This allows the logistics companies to shift some of their long-distance shipments from trucks to high-speed rail, reducing delivery costs and greenhouse gas emissions. We formulate a cooperative game with side payments to evaluate the profitability of the scheme and design fair profit-sharing rules among the logistics company, the railway operator, and participating passengers. We use game-theoretic solution concepts, such as the Shapley value and nucleolus, to accomplish this. Numerical experiments using Sagawa Express and JR Central data suggest that under high passenger participation rates, a substantial portion of parcels on the Tokyo–Osaka corridor could be handled via crowdshipping, maintaining or improving profitability for all stakeholders while reducing CO2 emissions relative to conventional truck-based delivery. Canada’s ageing population continues to grow rapidly and significantly more diverse, which will require unique health and home service needs. The COVID-19 pandemic exacerbated existing challenges in Canada’s healthcare system and demonstrated the need for long-term care (LTC). Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 17 decision makers, managers, and leaders in long-term ethnically focused facility care. Braun & Clarke’s six-stage process of thematic analysis was applied using an iterative, deductive approach to examine the experiences of stakeholders involved in the operational, managerial, financial, and clinical aspects of an ethnicity-focused LTC. Findings highlighted salient characteristics of impactful ethnicity-focused care and factors were uniquely shaped by the delivery of culturally specific care. Key subthemes included social isolation and emotional impact, operational and logistic difficulties during COVID-19, mitigation measures implemented in response, and the social, behavioural, and health benefits observed among seniors living in these LTC homes. Participants identified political and economic constraints (e.g., provincial funding) to establishing ethnicity-focused care homes but proposed several solutions and highlighted potential benefits that could support successful implementation. Analysis of experiences of operational challenges in safely and adequately running ethnicity-focused LTC reinforces the value of ethnicity-focused LTC during times of crisis such as the COVID-19 pandemic, as they provide a culturally safe and familiar space with preventive measures applied in a timely manner for seniors to engage with their peers in an environment that meets their health needs, ensuring safety standards. The environmental and social crises affecting global agri-food systems highlight the need for a profound transformation of production models and their territorial relations. In this context, agroecology, understood as science, practice, and movement, has emerged as a paradigm capable of integrating ecological sustainability, social equity, and community participation. Within this framework, the work carried out by CREA in the AgrEcoMed project (new agroecological approach for soil fertility and biodiversity restoration to improve economic and social resilience of Mediterranean farming systems), funded by the PRIMA programme, investigates agroecology as a social and political process of territorial regeneration. This process is grounded in co-design with local stakeholders, collective learning, and the construction of multi-actor networks for agroecology in the Mediterranean. The Manifesto functions as a tool for participatory governance and value convergence, aiming to consolidate a shared vision for the Mediterranean agroecological transition. The article examines, through an analysis of the existing literature, the role of agroecological networks and empirically examines the function of the collective co-creation of the Manifesto as a tool for social innovation. The methodology is based on a participatory action-research approach that used local focus groups, World Café, and thematic analysis to identify the needs of the companies involved. The results highlight the formation of a multi-actor network currently comprising around 90 members and confirm the effectiveness of the Manifesto as a boundary object for horizontal governance. This demonstrates how sustainability can emerge from dialogue, cooperation, and the co-production of knowledge among local actors. Full article

Rural governance is a key means of promoting sustainable rural development and is gradually evolving toward interdisciplinary research across multiple scales. How should governments at all levels implement precise policy to achieve rural revitalization goals? To reveal the multi-scale characteristics of rural spatial governance, this study proposes theoretical hypotheses and constructs a three-level analytical framework encompassing the municipal, functional area, and township dimensions. Taking Nanning City as a case study, it comprehensively employs global and local spatial autocorrelation methods to quantitatively analyze the spatial differentiation patterns and governance effectiveness across the five dimensions of rural revitalization at different scales. The results indicate that indicators such as ecological livability, industrial prosperity, life affluence, rural civilization, and effective governance all exhibit significant clustering patterns at various scales, with notable differences in the intensity of clustering across these scales. Specifically, the ecological livability indicator exhibits the strongest spatial agglomeration at the municipal level (Moran’s I = 0.578), industrial prosperity and affluent living show the strongest correlations at the functional area level (with average Moran’s I values of 0.281 and 0.414, respectively), while rural civilization and effective governance display the most pronounced clustering at the township level (Moran’s I values of 0.363 and 0.350). The findings provide direct evidence for implementing differentiated and precise rural spatial governance in Nanning City and similar regions, while also contributing to the optimization of cross-level policy resource allocation. Future research should further integrate multidisciplinary perspectives and expand the analysis of multi-stakeholder participation mechanisms. Full article

There is little evidence of the implementation of the Principles for Responsible Investment in Agriculture and Food Systems between universities and businesses, and there is even less research that prioritizes people and implements sustainable development with a territorial focus. In this article, we address a form of collaborative work that integrates academia with business, where the Principles for Responsible Investment in Agriculture and Food Systems (CFS-RIA) are seen as an opportunity to promote and strengthen the management of a business in the communities where it operates, and determine a new way of working from its links with the university. The experience is developed in the provinces of Santiago Rodríguez, Valverde (Mao), and Dajabón in the Dominican Republic, with the aim of contributing, using this new approach, to economic, social, environmental, and governance development in the territory. The conceptual and methodological basis for the university–business link is Working With People, a model that integrates key elements of planning such as social learning, collaborative participation, and project management models. The main catalysts of the experience are the business values and the stakeholders who insert the principles into their programs and projects. Among these is an innovative Family Social Responsibility Program with female entrepreneurs and organic banana production. It is concluded that the implementation of the CFS-RIA Principles has a significant impact on the sustainable development of the region and that the university–business link reinforces the social responsibility of companies, providing an opportunity for the entry of new actors. Achieving food and nutrition security remains a significant challenge for small-scale farmers in Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). However, indigenous vegetables offer a promising solution to this challenge. This systematic review used four databases and retrieved 38 studies published over the past 20 years for synthesis. These studies highlight the growing importance of indigenous vegetables grown in home gardens as a sustainable solution to improve livelihoods and dietary diversity. Indigenous vegetables are well-suited to local conditions, nutritionally rich, and were associated with improved household food availability and income. However, farmers face various risks, including environmental, technological, economic, institutional, and social risks, which threaten their production. To overcome risks, farmers adopt strategies such as training, cooperatives, improved storage, and better seed varieties. Indigenous vegetable cultivation also empowers women and marginalised groups who play key roles in home gardening. Despite their benefits, indigenous vegetables remain overlooked in mainstream markets and policies. The review recommends that policymakers and stakeholders must provide support to promote indigenous vegetables through training and market integration, helping farmers commercialise their produce, while simultaneously enhancing food and nutrition security. Further research is needed to explore the profitability of indigenous vegetable production, analyse supply value chains, and investigate processing and manufacturing opportunities to support their market potential and sustainability. The Wicked Problem of Space Debris: From a Static Economic Lens to a System Dynamics View

The global space economy, valued at approximately USD 400–630 billion (depending on definitional scope), is projected to expand rapidly, crossing USD 1 trillion as early as 2032 and reaching up to about USD 1.8 trillion by 2035. This growth has been driven by a surge (a roughly twelvefold increase) in satellite launches over the past decade, transforming Earth’s orbits into an increasingly congested domain plagued by space debris. The proliferation of space junk poses an escalating threat to orbital sustainability, yet effective governance mechanisms remain limited. This paper examines why conventional solutions for managing common-pool resources (command-and-control regulation, Pigouvian taxes, private property rights, allocation of tradable permits, and horizontal governance regimes) are not fully effective or are difficult to implement in addressing the orbital debris problem. Using a system dynamics perspective, the study qualitatively maps hypothesized feedback mechanisms shaping orbital expansion and space debris accumulation. It suggests that, under the assumed causal structure, reinforcing growth loops associated with geopolitical rivalry and commercial cost reductions linked to the New Space paradigm currently dominate over delayed balancing effects arising from the finite nature of orbital space, whose regenerative capacity is progressively degraded. There exists a threshold of exploitation beyond which orbital space effectively behaves as a non-renewable resource. The analysis suggests that, without binding international coordination, meaningful intervention may require the occurrence of a catalyzing crisis—e.g., a localized cascade of orbital object collisions that could transform stakeholder perceptions and enables active debris removal deployment. Background: Spasticity, which occurs with certain neurological conditions, substantially affects quality of life, function, and social participation. Despite widespread botulinum toxin use, variability persists in patient information, access to specialized rehabilitation, and follow-up models. Methods: This two-phase Delphi-Dialogue Patients–Professionals study (DDPP), promoted by SERMEF, integrated perspectives from 77 patients and 141 rehabilitation professionals. Phase 1 used parallel surveys to assess satisfaction, perceived effectiveness of botulinum toxin, communication preferences, and rehabilitation follow-up. Phase 2 applied Real-Time Delphi with 38 experts to generate consensus recommendations to improve spasticity management. Results: Patients and professionals agreed on botulinum toxin benefits, the importance of ongoing rehabilitation, and the value of hybrid (in-person/remote) follow-up. Key gaps concerned access to Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation services, clarity and timing of information, and shared goal setting. Experts translated these misalignments into 10 prioritized recommendations, with highest feasibility for actions standardizing access pathways, optimizing botulinum toxin use, reinforcing structured education, and consolidating hybrid rehabilitation models. Conclusions: The DDPP approach offers a reproducible framework to align stakeholder perspectives by converting quantified divergence into consensus-based innovation priorities. Implementing the recommendations—particularly those strengthening communication, education, and hybrid pathways regarding botulinum toxin treatment—may support more accessible, personalized, patient-centered spasticity care. Global water management faces a critical challenge: whilst scholarly consensus recognises that multiple, interacting drivers fundamentally shape water availability and management capacity, operational governance frameworks fail to systematically incorporate this understanding. This disconnect is particularly acute in public good contexts where incomplete knowledge, diverse stakeholder values, and statutory planning mandates create distinct challenges. Using Australia’s Murray–Darling Basin as a pilot case, this research develops and demonstrates a rapid, policy-relevant heuristic for identifying, prioritising, and incorporating drivers of change in complex socio-ecological water systems. Through structured participatory deliberation with 70 experts spanning research, policy, industry, and community sectors across three sequential workshops and 15 semi-structured interviews, we systematically identified key drivers across environmental, governance, economic, social, and legacy dimensions. A risk and sensitivity assessment framework enabled prioritisation based on impact, vulnerability, and urgency. Climate change, drought, water quality events, and cumulative impacts emerged as the highest-priority future drivers, with climate change acting as a threat multiplier, whilst governance drivers show declining relative significance. Using these methodological innovations, we synthesise the I-PLAN heuristic: five interdependent dimensions (Integrative Knowledge, Prioritisation for Management, Linkages between Drivers, Adaptive Agendas, and Normative Collaboration) that provide water planners with a transferable, operational tool for driver identification and bridging to planning and management in data-sparse contexts. This study examines the relationship between publicly traded Thai companies’ ESG performance and value as well as how board structures moderate this. In the Thai context, there is a limited number of empirical studies that employ the board of directors’ structure as a moderating variable, despite the importance of the board’s role in corporate management. This study aims to address this research gap. A panel GMM regression model is employed to address endogeneity issues, and our sample consists of 94 Thai listed companies with available ESG data from 2019 to 2023, resulting in 470 firm-year observations. The results demonstrate positive direct impact of ESG score on corporate value. In addition, board independence is positively significant and relates to company value. However, this research found negative moderating effect of board independence on the relationship between ESG score and corporate value. Furthermore, the empirical results indicate that board size does not have a significant direct and moderate impact on corporate value. Moreover, firm size and leverage are not related to corporate value. The results confirm the agency theory and stakeholder theory. Based on the findings, company executives should integrate ESG practices into their strategic plans. Moreover, regulatory authorities should promote expertise diversity and independence within the board and promote ESG standards and disclosure, as well as offer tax incentives for companies with outstanding ESG. This would enable investors to consider ESG performance in their decision-making. This study represents a new contribution to literature, especially in the context of emerging markets. Full article

Despite European and international regulatory frameworks promoting circular economy principles, sustainability in the furniture sector is still challenged by the limited access to reliable information about circular materials for designers, manufacturers, and waste managers in the Made-in-Italy furniture ecosystem. This research develops a digital infrastructure to address these information gaps through mixed methodology, combining desk research on regulatory frameworks and existing platforms; field research involving stakeholder mapping and interviews with designers, manufacturers, and waste managers; and the experimental development of AI-enhanced digital tools. The result integrates a web-based platform for circular materials with a CAD plugin supporting real-time sustainability assessment. As AI-assisted data entry showed a reduced form completion time while maintaining accuracy through human verification, testing also revealed how the system effectively bridges knowledge gaps between stakeholders operating in currently siloed value chains. The platform is a critical step in enabling designers to incorporate circular materials during the early design stages, while providing manufacturers access to verified punctual sustainability data compliant with mandatory Green Public Procurement criteria. Beyond the development of an innovative digital tool, the study outlines a corresponding operational model as a practical framework for strengthening the transition toward a circular economy in the Italian furniture industry.
