Intensified water consumption has driven rapid groundwater depletion globally, threatening economic and environmental sustainability. Understanding large-scale groundwater dynamics has been constrained by the scarcity of long-term, high-resolution records. This study uses multi-decadal, high-density groundwater level monitoring data from the Southern Hebei Plain (SHP) to analyze the evolution of the groundwater flow field and depression cones from 1959 to 2020. We quantitatively characterize trends over six decades and assess the impact of the South-to-North Water Diversion Project (SNWD). The regional flow field shifted from a natural topographic-driven pattern (foothills to coast) in the 1960s to localized systems centered on depression cones by the 1980s. Subsequent management policies and the SNWD have progressively reduced the extent of these cones, facilitating a partial recovery of the regional flow pattern towards its original direction. Shallow aquifer levels declined steeply from the 1980s until 2016, particularly along the Taihang Mountains’ alluvial fan margins, with cumulative drawdown of 20–60 m. After SNWD implementation, levels stabilized and began recovering in piedmont urban areas. Deep aquifer levels generally declined from the 1980s to 2016, with the most significant drawdown (40–90 m) occurring in the central–eastern plain. The recovery of deep aquifers lagged behind shallow ones. These results provide critical insights for supporting sustainable groundwater management and depression cone recovery in the Hebei Plain. Background/Objectives: The objective of this study was to investigate current endodontic practice patterns and the adoption of newer technologies among dentists, endodontic specialists, and postgraduate students in Spain and Latin America. Methods: A cross-sectional survey was conducted using a structured 30-item questionnaire covering demographics, training, technology adoption (NiTi instrumentation, magnification, CBCT, irrigation adjuncts, bioceramic sealers), obturation techniques, irrigant selection, and clinical procedures. The survey was distributed through a professional Instagram account and WhatsApp groups of dentists, specialists, and postgraduate students. Participation was voluntary, anonymous, and restricted to qualified professionals. Data were collected via Google Forms, cleaned, and grouped into Spain, Mexico, Venezuela, Colombia, Southern Cone & Andes (Argentina, Chile, Peru, Ecuador, Bolivia), and other countries. Descriptive statistics were calculated, and intergroup comparisons were performed using Chi-square or Fisher’s exact tests with Bonferroni correction (p < 0.05). Multiple regression analyses were performed. Results: A total of 1358 valid responses were analyzed, distributed as follows: Spain (219), Mexico (353), Venezuela (162), Colombia (108), Southern Cone & Andes (260), and other countries (256). Most respondents (62.8%) had ≤10 years of experience, and 61.2% reported postgraduate training. Loupes (55.4%) were the most frequent magnification system, followed by microscopes (18.6%). Sodium hypochlorite (98.3%) was the irrigant of choice, commonly used with EDTA (83.5%) and, to a lesser extent, chlorhexidine (33.4%). Sonic (83.2%) and ultrasonic (52.9%) activation were frequent. Bioceramic sealers were used by 18.9%, while calcium hydroxide medication was applied by 37.4%. Specialists and master-level clinicians showed greater use of rotary NiTi systems, CBCT, magnification, and bioceramic sealers, whereas general practitioners relied more on manual instrumentation and single-cone obturation. Success was mainly verified by combined clinical and radiographic evaluation (86.7%). Spain demonstrated higher adoption of microscopes, warm vertical compaction, and CBCT. Conclusions: Core practices such as sodium hypochlorite irrigation and rubber dam use were widespread, while advanced technologies and irrigant protocols varied with training level and region. Continuous education remains essential to promote evidence-based practice and reduce disparities in endodontic innovation. Full article

The Corsican pine (Pinus nigra subsp. laricio (Poir.) Maire), a subspecies of black pine endemic to southern Italy, is widely known for the quality of its valuable timber, and the parts of the plant that are not used for this purpose are considered unusable production waste. In this study, we investigated the phytochemical profile and a series of biological activities of extracts from the female and male pine cones. The extracts were prepared by maceration with ethanol and subsequently fractionated using liquid-liquid separation. The total phenolic and flavonoid content, antioxidant potential (DPPH and β-carotene bleaching tests), anti-inflammatory activity (nitric oxide inhibition in RAW 264.7 cells), and enzymatic inhibition against pancreatic lipase and α-amylase were determined. The female cones showed a higher crude extract yield and total phenolic content (76.4 mg GAE/g) than the male cones, while the latter were richer in flavonoids. The extracts from the female cones showed higher antioxidant and pancreatic lipase inhibitory activities. On the contrary, extracts from male cones showed greater activity against α-amylase, with the dichloromethane fraction proving to be the most potent (IC50 = 35.28 ± 3.08 µg/mL). The hexane fraction of female cones also showed significant anti-inflammatory activity (IC50 = 107.50 ± 15.22 µg/mL). Our results reveal that the pine cones of Pinus nigra subsp. laricio (Poir.) Maire are a rich source of bioactive compounds. These results provide the first scientific evidence of the potential of extracts from this still poorly studied part of the plant for further investigation of their antioxidant and anti-inflammatory capabilities. The pistachio psyllid (Agonoscena pistaciae) is a significant pest in pistachio (Pistacia vera) orchards, leading to serious economic losses. Understanding its overwintering behaviour is essential for developing effective pest control strategies. This study aimed to identify the overwintering habitats of A. pistaciae and to explore an alternative nature-based trapping method to managing its population. Field surveys were conducted over two years (2020–2022) in five key pistachio-growing regions of southern Türkiye. Our findings suggest that the A. pistaciae primarily overwinters in the mature cones of Turkish pine (Pinus brutia) and Mediterranean cypress (Cupressus sempervirens), as well as on the semi-evergreen leaves of oak trees (Quercus brantii, and Q. infectoria). Based on these observations, we developed cone-based overwintering traps and deployed them in pistachio orchards. These traps captured ten times more psyllids than those that were naturally overwintering in cones, which highlights their potential as a pest management tool. This study provides the first evidence of A. pistaciae overwintering in conifer cones and suggests that cone-based traps could serve as a practical and eco-friendly alternative to chemical control methods. Implementing this strategy in pistachio orchards may help reduce psyllid populations while preserving the ecological balance. Full article

Non-food geographical indications (GIs) are emerging as strategic policy instruments in the European Union after Regulation (EU) 2023/2411 extended protection to craft and industrial products. While the literature on agri-food GIs is extensive, empirical and comparative evidence on non-food GIs remains scarce and fragmented. This study addresses this gap by constructing a harmonised dataset, combining 132 registered and 380 potential non-food GIs identified by EUIPO (512 in total across the EU). Using secondary institutional data, descriptive and comparative statistics, and a hierarchical clustering (Ward, squared Euclidean distance) on normalised indicators total GIs, GIs per million inhabitants (GI/POP), and GIs per € billion of GDP (GI/GDP), the analysis identifies three country typologies differing by scale and intensity. Results reveal a strong geographical concentration in Southern Europe but also unexpectedly high intensity in smaller or mid-sized economies such as Portugal, Cyprus, and Slovenia. A forward-looking scenario analysis based on Cost of Non-Europe (CoNE) estimates suggests that the full implementation of the new Regulation could generate 284,000–338,000 new jobs and € 37–50 billion in additional intra-EU trade. The study contributes to EU policy debates by introducing comparative indicators (GI/POP, GI/GDP) as monitoring tools for evidence-based policymaking and by highlighting the role of non-food GIs as hybrid institutions connecting industrial competitiveness, cultural identity, and sustainability transitions. We report the first occurrence of an arboreal spiny rat of the tribe Echimyini in the Early Holocene of southern South America. The specimen, a lower deciduous premolar, was recovered from fluvial deposits exposed along the right bank of Doll Creek, in northeastern Argentina. Morphological comparisons indicate strong affinities with the extant Amazonian genus Lonchothrix, although the fossil exhibits distinct traits such as thicker enamel and a transverse, short posterior mesofossettid. The available evidence of strong climatic niche conservatism in Echimyini supports its interpretation as an indicator of the transient presence of humid, Amazonian-like forests in the region around 10,000 years ago. Sedimentological and stratigraphic evidence correlates this warming phase with an Early Holocene transgression in the Paraná Delta. The absence of aff. Lonchothrix in the recent fauna may be the result of a post-optimum extinction event triggered by a drier phase during the Middle Holocene. This discovery provides novel evidence for a short-lived biogeographic connection between Amazonia and the southern cone during a climatic window of expansion for tropical biotas. It also highlights the role of the fossil record of Echimyidae as a sensitive proxy for reconstructing paleoenvironmental changes in temperate South America. Full article

Malaria, caused by a protozoan parasite of the genus Plasmodium and transmitted by mosquitoes of the genus Anopheles, remains a significant vector-borne disease worldwide. In 2018, Paraguay became the first country in the Americas in 45 years to be certified malaria-free by the World Health Organization. Between 2016 and 2017, a period with no reported human malaria cases, the presence of Plasmodium spp. in Anopheles mosquitoes was investigated in the departments of Caaguazú and Alto Paraná. These studies found that the most prevalent Anopheles species in Paraguay, including Anopheles albitarsis (59.4%), Anopheles strodei (21.5%), and other Anopheles species in smaller proportions, were all negative to the parasite. The objective of this study was to re-evaluate these presence data and to define environmentally suitable areas for Anopheles spp. and their association with bioclimatic variables using DIVA-GIS/MaxEnt software for the entomological surveillance of malaria risk in Paraguay. Results showed that areas of bioclimatic suitability included the Humid Chaco, Cerrado, Paraná Atlantic Forest, and Southern Cone Mesopotamian savanna ecoregions. The most relevant climatic variables were the precipitation of the wettest month (contribution of 80.4%) and the precipitation of the driest month (contribution of 18.4%). Anopheles albitarsis, also reported as a vector of the Venezuelan equine encephalitis virus in neighbouring countries, was the most abundant mosquito species. Anopheles darlingi, the main vector of malaria in Paraguay, was not found. However, species richness indices (Chao/ACE) suggest that cryptic or sibling species may be present. Finally, the possible succession of Anopheles species and their geographical segregation are discussed in scenarios of entomological surveillance and epidemiological risk. Full article

Objectives: Torus mandibularis (TM) is a benign bony exostosis on the lingual surface of the mandible, typically developing from the third decade of life with slow progression; its etiology remains unclear. As TM excision causes no functional or aesthetic disadvantages, its use as autologous bone graft material (e.g., for pre-implant or sinus lift augmentation) has been suggested. In this study, we investigate the prevalence and expression of TM in a southern German population with regard to age and gender. Additionally, we examine whether TM undergoes dynamic changes over time, with the hypothesis that TM may show temporal growth. Material and Methods: A retrospective analysis of CBCT scans from 210 randomly selected patients (105 males, 105 females) was performed. Patients were divided into three age groups (≤40, 41–60, ≥61 years; 70 per group), and TM was measured using OsiriX MD. For the longitudinal study, 146 CBCTs from 73 patients were compared over intervals of 2–9 years. Surface changes were assessed via 3D overlay using GOM Inspect. Results: TM was found in 30.5% of patients, and its prevalence was significantly higher in males (38%) than females (23%), with no age-related differences identified. Most TMs measured <2 mm (n = 51); only five exceeded this size. No dynamic growth was observed over time. Conclusion and Clinical Implications: TM is a common anatomical variant, more frequently detected through 3D imaging than clinical examination. In most cases, size remains minimal (<2 mm), limiting its clinical use as augmentation material in rare individual cases. Full article

We report a landscape-scale natural experiment that followed the abundance and demography of forest-floor small mammals and the activity of small mustelids over a 4-year period of an extreme heat wave and abundant coniferous cone crops. Deer mice (Peromyscus maniculatus) and southern red-backed voles (Myodes gapperi) are major species in the coniferous forest-floor small mammal community near Summerland in southern British Columbia, Canada. Their major mammalian predators include the short-tailed weasel (Mustela richardsonii), long-tailed weasel (Neogale frenata), and American marten (Martes americana). We evaluated three hypotheses (H) that may explain the changes in these mammals from 2021 to 2024: (H1) that large coniferous cone crops in 2022 would have generated high populations of forest-floor small mammals in 2023 owing to enhanced reproductive output and overwinter survival; (H2) that increased activity of mustelids would have followed population increases, resulting in the decline of small mammal prey in 2024; and (H3) that the widespread occurrence of cone crops in 2022 would also have elicited the same mammalian responses in 2023 at a second study area (Golden, BC) 276 km and three mountain ranges from Summerland. During the summer periods of each year, small mammal populations were monitored by intensive live-trapping, and mustelid presence was measured via an index of activity based on live traps, fecal scats, and predation events. The mean abundance and reproductive performance of the P. maniculatus and M. gapperi populations increased in response to the coniferous seedfall, thereby supporting H1. The activity of small mustelids responded positively to increased numbers of small mammal prey and potentially acted in a regulatory and top–down function in these communities, and hence partially support H2. Similar responses at Summerland and Golden indicated that this seedfall event and changes in the mammalian community occurred at a landscape-scale, thereby providing partial support for H3. Potential differential effects of large seed crops on consumers did not affect the mean abundance patterns for P. maniculatus but apparently reduced this metric for M. gapperi. Heat waves, induced by anthropogenic climate change, may alter the frequency of coniferous masting events, and their effects may temporarily change the number and species of mammalian seed consumers and their predators. This study investigates the relationships between surface deformations and groundwater management in the Metropolitan Region of Guatemala (MRG), a geologically complex area subjected to different types of ground deformation, integrating five municipalities around Guatemala City. Deformation patterns were characterized through Multi-Temporal Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (MT-InSAR) and compared with groundwater piezometric data. The MT-InSAR technique allowed the identification of the main deformation areas in the MRG. Previously reported maximum subsidence rates ranged from −60 mm/year to −20 mm/year, with local maxima fitting with the extraction well fields of Villanueva and Petapa, in the South basin. Subsidence bowl or depression cone deformation areas were identified and located, similar to those described in the literature for other urban areas, such as Jakarta, Semarang, and Mexico City, among others. This study contextualizes these findings within the detailed hydrogeological framework of the region, highlighting the long-standing generalized exploitation of groundwater resources for urban, agricultural, and industrial uses. Historical data on water wells, piezometric levels, and groundwater flow patterns indicate that groundwater extraction has surpassed the natural recharge rates, particularly in the southern and eastern hydrological basins in the study area. This research identifies a critical need for sustainable water management, emphasizing the importance of integrating MT-InSAR into groundwater monitoring schemes. Full article

The Nevados de Chillán Volcanic Complex is one of the most active of the Southern Volcanic Zone. It is formed by NW-SE-aligned eruptive centers divided into two subcomplexes, namely Cerro Blanco (basaltic andesitic) and Las Termas (dacitic), and two satellite cones (to the SW and NE of the main alignment). Our study of the Shangri-La volcano, which is located between the two subcomplexes, in alignment with the satellite cones, and which produced dacitic lavas with basaltic andesitic enclaves, sheds light on the compositional and structural diversity of the volcanic complex. Detailed petrography along with mineral chemistry allows us to suggest partial hybridization between the enclaves and the host lavas and that mixing processes are related to the generation of the Shangri-La volcano and to other volcanic products generated in the complex. This is supported by mixing trends between the enclaves and the most differentiated units from Las Termas. We argue the presence of two main magma storage areas genetically related to crustal structures. A dacitic reservoir (~950 °C) is fed along NW-SE structures, whereas a deeper mafic reservoir (>1100 °C) utilizes predominantly NE-SW structures. We suggest that the intersection between these sets of structures facilitates magma ascent and controls the Nevados de Chillán plumbing system dynamics. Full article

As humans expanded across the globe, the Americas were the last continents to be colonized. While debates persist regarding the timing and mechanisms of this process, it is widely accepted that by the Pleistocene–Holocene transition, the New World was populated from Alaska to Tierra del Fuego. During this period, hunter-gatherer societies demonstrated remarkable cultural and adaptive diversity, particularly in subsistence strategies and technological innovations. The colonization of the Americas offers valuable insights into population dynamics, human–environment interactions, species extinctions, and adaptive capacities. From an interdisciplinary perspective that combines an isotopic analysis of megafaunal remains with archaeological evidence, this study examines human interactions with Pleistocene fauna in the south–central region of South America’s Southern Cone. Isotopic analyses provide information about the diets, adaptations, and climatic challenges faced by megafaunal communities. Archaeological evidence reveals that humans utilized megafauna and other Pleistocene species for food and tool production. These findings are supported by evidence such as cut marks and bone tools, but also by sealed sediment layers and/or indisputable associations of lithic artifacts. This research contributes to our understanding of human dispersal in the Southern Cone during the colonization of the Americas, shedding light on the regional environments and adaptive strategies of early populations. This study explores the impact of the radial interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) on the strength and latitude of peak field-aligned currents (FACs). FACs are derived through vector magnetic field observations of the Swarm satellite mission. The analysis examines how the responses of FACs to radial IMF vary according to local time, season, and hemisphere. In the dawn and noon–midnight sectors, which are primarily influenced by westward auroral electrojets, the Northern Hemisphere (NH) exhibits stronger poleward FACs (FACp) when the IMF cone angle is ≥135° and weaker FACp when the cone angle is ≤45°. In contrast, the Southern Hemisphere (SH) shows the opposite response to the IMF Bx polarity. The effect of IMF Bx is more pronounced during summer than winter, especially in the noon-to-midnight sector, while its influence on FACs is more significant during the dawn period in winter. The latitude of FACs is most strongly affected by IMF Bx around noon and midnight. A relationship is observed between FAC density and latitude in response to IMF Bx, with stronger FACp occurring at lower latitudes. Full article

This paper develops a strategic framework that integrates the theoretical perspectives of evolutionary economic geography and economic complexity to identify green export opportunities. By combining feasibility factors—such as green specialization, relatedness, and trade inertia—with desirability criteria like income, equity, and low emissions, the framework offers a comprehensive approach to identify green export diversification. The empirical application, focused on the Southern Cone (Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Paraguay, and Uruguay), suggests that economies should prioritize green opportunities aligned with their existing capabilities, gradually expanding into higher-risk, higher-return options. The study provides tailored green export diversification portfolios for each country, identifying key opportunities in renewable energy products for Argentina and Brazil, lithium-related inputs for Chile, biofuels for Paraguay, and green hydrogen for Uruguay. These findings offer valuable insights for the design of public policies aimed at fostering green export diversification. Full article

With the issue of energy shortages becoming increasingly serious, the need to shift to sustainable and clean energy sources has become urgent. However, due to the intermittent nature of most renewable energy sources, developing underground hydrogen storage (UHS) systems as backup energy solutions offers a promising solution. The thick and regionally extensive salt deposits in Unit B of Southern Ontario, Canada, have demonstrated significant potential for supporting such storage systems. Based on the stratigraphy statistics of unit B, this study investigates the feasibility and stability of underground hydrogen storage (UHS) in salt caverns, focusing on the effects of cavern shape, geometric parameters, and operating pressures. Three cavern shapes—cylindrical, cone-shaped, and ellipsoid-shaped—were analyzed using numerical simulations. Results indicate that cylindrical caverns with a diameter-to-height ratio of 1.5 provide the best balance between storage capacity and structural stability, while ellipsoid-shaped caverns offer reduced stress concentration but have less storage space, posing practical challenges during leaching. The results also indicate that the optimal pressure range for maintaining stability and minimizing leakage lies between 0.4 and 0.7 times the vertical in situ stress. Higher pressures increase storage capacity but lead to greater stress, displacements, and potential leakage risks, while lower pressure leads to internal extrusion tendency for cavern walls. Additionally, hydrogen leakage rate drops with the maximum working pressure, yet total leakage mass keeps a growing trend. Full article
