Rapid Minimum Wage Increases and Societal Sustainability: Evidence from Labor Productivity in China

Minimum wage is an important tool for reducing income inequality and supporting social welfare. Consequently, governments around the world have established minimum wage systems. As such, minimum wage policies connect distributive justice with the economy’s capacity to sustain broad-based welfare over time, placing the equity–efficiency trade-off at the center of societal sustainability. However, the micro-level impact of the minimum wage system on firms has always been an important topic for scholars. This study uses panel data from listed Chinese manufacturing firms over a period from 2005 to 2021 to construct an indicator of the minimum wage standards implemented in the firm locations. Employing the multiple linear regression model, this paper empirically examines the effects of minimum wage on labor productivity. The empirical findings demonstrate that minimum wage significantly reduced the sample firms’ labor productivity. Moreover, the negative impact of the minimum wage was primarily concentrated among non-state-owned firms, labor-intensive firms, firms operating in industries characterized by intense product market competition, firms situated in regions with strong legal protections, firms with comparatively low average employee wages, and export-oriented firms. Subsequently, this study delves into the mechanism through which minimum wage negatively affects labor productivity. We find that implementation of minimum wage leads to a reduction in corporate investment, indicating that there is no significant substitution relationship between capital and labor. These adjustment margins provide microfoundations through which statutory wage floors can influence the resilience and inclusiveness of development, indicating that the pace and design of wage increases should balance income protection with the preservation of productive capacity to support sustainable human development—grounded in steady productivity growth, equitable income distribution, and stable firm investment. Our findings contribute to a better understanding of the mechanism through which minimum wage affects labor productivity in theory, while concurrently furnishing policy insights for the optimization of the minimum wage system and maintaining sustainable societal development in practice. Higher education institutions are increasingly expected to excel in environmental, social, and governance (ESG) performance, but questions remain about how a university’s core missions contribute to its ESG outcomes. This study investigates the relationships between the missions of universities—education, research, and entrepreneurship—and their ESG performance, focusing on environmental and social dimensions. We utilize data from 12 research-intensive Dutch universities from 2023 to 2025, drawing on QS World University Rankings (WUR) indicators, the QS Sustainability Rankings, and Times Higher Education (THE) metrics. A partial least squares structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM) approach is employed with formative constructs for each mission and outcome. The results reveal that the entrepreneurship mission (knowledge exchange and industry income) has a strong positive influence on both environmental and social performance, while the research mission significantly boosts social performance. The education mission shows no significant direct effect on either outcome in our model. The findings underscore the critical role of the third mission in driving university ESG performance and suggest that research excellence translates to social impact when aligned with societal needs. Artificial intelligence (AI) is increasingly regarded as a transformative enabler of sustainable logistics and supply chain management, particularly in the context of global energy transition and decarbonization efforts. This study provides a comprehensive conceptual and exploratory assessment of the multidimensional role of AI, highlighting both its potential to enhance energy efficiency and reduce greenhouse gas emissions, as well as its inherent environmental costs associated with digital infrastructures such as data centers. The findings reveal the dual character of digitalization: while predictive algorithms and digital twin applications facilitate demand forecasting, process optimization, and real-time adaptation to market fluctuations, they simultaneously generate additional energy demand that must be offset through renewable energy integration and intelligent energy balancing. The analysis underscores that the effectiveness of AI deployment cannot be captured solely through economic metrics but requires a holistic evaluation framework that incorporates environmental and social dimensions. Moreover, regional disparities are identified, with advanced economies accelerating AI-driven green transformations under regulatory and societal pressures, while developing economies face constraints linked to infrastructure gaps and investment limitations. The analysis emphasizes that AI-driven predictive models and digital twin applications are not only tools for energy optimization but also mechanisms that enhance systemic resilience by enabling risk anticipation, adaptive resource allocation, and continuity of operations in volatile environment. The contribution of this study lies in situating AI within the digital–green synergy discourse, demonstrating that its role in logistics decarbonization is conditional upon integrated energy–climate strategies, organizational change, and workforce reskilling. By synthesizing emerging evidence, this article provides actionable insights for policymakers, managers, and scholars, and calls for more rigorous empirical research across sectors, regions, and time horizons to verify the long-term sustainability impacts of AI-enabled solutions in supply chains. Objective: To conduct a scoping review of the global trends of adolescent health inequities and their social determinants from 2000 to 2024 and establish an evidence base for developing targeted intervention strategies. Methods: Guided by the rainbow model, we conducted a bibliometric analysis of 171 peer-reviewed articles related to adolescent health inequalities and their social determinants from the Web of Science Core Collection using CiteSpace 6.3.1 to summarize empirical evidence on how social determinants of health (SDOH) influence adolescents’ health behaviors (e.g., drinking) and health outcomes (e.g., overweight). Results: First, results showed a progressive increase in publications addressing social determinants of adolescent health from 2000 to 2024. Journals in public health and preventive medicine accounted for the highest proportion of articles, with the United States contributing the largest national share (21.05% of global output). Second, an analysis of keywords showed that previous studies mostly focused on the effects of socioeconomic status, family affluence on adolescent health (e.g., physical activity, mental health, and overweight). Third, inequalities in adolescent health were prevalent globally. Health behaviors (e.g., diet, oral health, and smoking) have received widespread attention and are influenced by socioeconomic status, family environment, and gender, whereas various indicators of adolescent health outcomes (e.g., obesity, mental health, and suicide) were highly correlated with family socioeconomic status. Conclusions: To reduce adolescent health disparities, it is important to deepen interdisciplinary research, consider the impact of emerging societal (e.g., digital environments) and environmental factors (e.g., climate change), and develop systematic and comprehensive intervention strategies that encompass the individual, family, school, community, and national levels. The deployment of solar and other renewable energy technologies (RETs) plays a central role in the global energy transition and the pursuit of sustainable development. Beyond reducing greenhouse gas emissions, these technologies generate far-reaching societal co-benefits that shape environmental quality, social equity, and economic growth. This study systematically reviews peer-reviewed literature published between 2009 and 2025 to identify, integrate, and assess empirical evidence on how RET deployment contributes to societal welfare. Following the SALSA framework and PRISMA guidelines, 147 studies were selected from Scopus and Web of Science. The evidence reveals a consistent welfare triad: environmental gains (emission and pollution reduction, climate mitigation), social gains (improved health, affordability, energy security, and inclusion), and economic gains (employment and income growth, local development). These benefits are, however, heterogeneous and depend on enabling conditions such as policy stability, financial development, grid integration, innovation capacity, and social acceptance. The review highlights that solar energy, in particular, acts as both an environmental and social catalyst in advancing sustainable welfare outcomes. The findings provide a comprehensive basis for policymakers and researchers seeking to design equitable and welfare-enhancing renewable energy transitions. Full article

Background: Substance use relapse is a significant obstacle that hinders the success of addiction treatment and recovery for youths struggling with substance use challenges. The economic and social impacts of substance use and relapse in young people are a cause of concern worldwide; Botswana is not an exception. Objective: The study aimed to explore and describe the perceptions of youth substance users regarding the prevention of relapse in Lobatse, Botswana. Methods: A qualitative study was conducted, following an exploratory, descriptive, and contextual research design. In total, 15 participants were selected using a purposive sampling technique. Data were collected using semi-structured questions, and thematic analysis was used to analyse the data. Results: Data analysis yielded two themes and subthemes. The first theme was on the perceptions of youth substance users on the causes of substance use relapse. The second theme was on the perceptions of youth substance users on the prevention of substance use relapse. Conclusion: The study showed that substance use relapse can be caused by psychological challenges, social problems, societal issues, and healthcare barriers. Our study suggests that to abate relapses to substances, interventions should encompass individual, social, and community dimensions of a substance user’s life. Furthermore, there should be healthcare interventions geared towards relapse prevention. Full article

This study examines the impact of sociodemographic factors on the attitudes of EU citizens towards animal welfare and their implications for trade policy. Variations in animal welfare legislation across major commercial blocks create ethical and economic challenges, with the EU implementing stringent standards compared with other countries. Data were drawn from the Special Eurobarometer 533 survey, conducted between the 3rd and 26th March 2023, which employed a multistage, clustered sampling method across all 27 EU Member States, yielding a representative sample of 26,368 respondents. The survey collected detailed information on attitudes toward animal welfare alongside sociodemographic characteristics. The results revealed substantial public support for stricter regulations and informative labelling, with attitudes differing with age (p < 0.001), education (p < 0.001), income (p < 0.001), and political orientation (p < 0.001), according to the multinomial regression applied to each of the independent variables. These results emphasise the importance of these factors in shaping consumer expectations. The findings highlight the need for policymakers to integrate ethical and societal values into trade negotiations, ensuring that policies reflect public concerns, promote fair competition, and encourage higher animal welfare standards internationally. Additionally, understanding the perspectives and motivations of livestock industry stakeholders remains critical for implementing effective welfare strategies. By aligning EU trade policy with citizen values and stakeholder practices, it is possible to advance animal welfare globally while balancing economic and ethical considerations and promoting a fair trade. In agriculture, climate change is the most critical global issue. It is widely acknowledged that addressing this issue poses a considerable challenge, primarily due to its multifaceted impact on regional economies and land management practices. The concept of Nature-based Solutions (NbS) provides a prosperous approach offering both adaptation and mitigation models. However, NbS implementation is often compromised by various natural and societal challenges. Vojvodina Province, the northern province of the Republic of Serbia, features a typical rural landscape where centuries of agricultural practice have led to significant environmental changes, with 70% of the territory converted to arable land. However, climate change has been demonstrated to induce increasingly extreme weather conditions, which in turn exacerbate the situation with regard to food production. This paper aims to examine the most prosperous ways for NbS implementation in Vojvodina Province. The preset study mapped areas suitable for the implementation of selected NbS on the territory of Vojvodina Province. Maps were created in QGIS, while data were extracted from various sources (CORINE Land Cover, OpenStreetMap, the Institute for Nature Conservation of Vojvodina Province, and EUNIS platform). The area suitable for NbS in Vojvodina amounts to 1,183,228 ha or 55.74%. An increase in the area dedicated to organic and regenerative agriculture is projected, with a predicted range of up to 5%. Finally, we have identified grazing as a desirable management option for grassland management, which we have mapped, and it could potentially be practiced on almost 10% of the territory. Moreover, the engagement of various stakeholders is crucial in the implementation of NbS over the territory of the rural landscape. Considering that neighboring countries are facing the same climate circumstances and a similar social context, the findings we have presented in the paper may be applied to the region of the southern part of the Pannonian Plain. Background: The societal effects of prostate cancer are profound. Prostate surgeries remain one of the main treatment modalities in the care of prostate cancer, and one of the common complications associated with this procedure is postoperative erectile dysfunction (ED). ED can have a significant negative impact on men’s quality of life. The included articles from the last systematic review on effect of pre-operative pelvic floor muscle training (PPFMT) on ED after radical prostatectomy (RP) showed mixed findings but recommended the need for better exercise regime to witness better outcome. Therefore, this systematic review aims to provide further evidence from 2018 to understand the impact of PPFMT on postoperative ED and provide latest insights for future research. Methods: A systematic search was conducted on Medline, Embase, CINAHL, and Google Scholar from 2018 to June 2025, with the assistance of a subject-expert librarian. The inclusion criteria include articles which examine the effect of PPFMT on ED post prostatectomy from 2018 to June 2025 and have a minimum of two comparative groups (control vs. case). In addition, non-English articles were excluded from the study. The included articles were further assessed by two independent reviewers using Covidence, and disagreements were resolved by another independent reviewer. Results: A total of 344 articles were located and after removing duplicates, 250 articles remained. Following the abstract and title screening, nine articles were assessed for eligibility. Upon full-text review, three studies (two randomized control trials (RCTs) and one non-RCT) were ultimately included. The two RCTs showed no significant impact of PPFMT on post-operative ED. On the other hand, the non-RCT reported a significant difference in the post-operative ED rate in the case (5%) vs. control (48.6%) group. PPFMT was defined as ten pre-operative physiotherapy sessions in ten consecutive working days using anal biofeedback. Conclusions: The current study, since 2018, reveals mixed findings on the effect of PPFMT on postoperative ED. However, upon reviewing the evidence on the positive role of PPFMT in other fields (e.g., gynecology, general surgery), we noticed that the included studies may be lacking some major components like knowledge assessment, subjective and objective assessment, along with characteristics of sessions (number, duration, intensity, interval to surgery, and biofeedback) that play a crucial role in the effectiveness of the PPFMT in strengthening the pelvic floor muscle and improving the outcomes. Further research with robust designs is warranted. Full article

The electric power grid constitutes a foundational pillar of modern critical infrastructure (CI), underpinning societal functionality and global economic stability. Yet, the increasing convergence of Information Technology (IT) and Operational Technology (OT), particularly through the integration of Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) and Industrial Control Systems (ICS), has amplified the sector’s exposure to sophisticated cyber threats. This study conducts a comparative analysis of five major cyber incidents targeting electric power systems: the 2015 and 2016 Ukrainian power grid disruptions, the 2022 Industroyer2 event, the 2010 Stuxnet attack, and the 2012 Shamoon incident. Each case is examined with respect to its objectives, methodologies, operational impacts, and mitigation efforts. Building on these analyses, the research evaluates the extent to which such attacks could have been prevented or mitigated through the systematic adoption of leading cybersecurity maturity frameworks. The NIST Cybersecurity Framework (CSF) 2.0, the ENISA NIS2 Directive Risk Management Measures, the U.S. Department of Energy’s Cybersecurity Capability Maturity Model (C2M2), and the Cybersecurity Risk Foundation (CRF) Maturity Model alongside complementary technical standards such as NIST SP 800-82 and IEC 62443 have been thoroughly examined. The findings suggest that a proactive, layered defense architecture grounded in the principles of these frameworks could have significantly reduced both the likelihood and the operational impact of the reviewed incidents. Moreover, the paper identifies critical gaps in the existing maturity models, particularly in their ability to capture hybrid, cross-domain, and human-centric threat dynamics. The study concludes by proposing directions for evolving from compliance-driven to resilience-oriented cybersecurity ecosystems, offering actionable recommendations for policymakers and power system operators to strengthen the cyber-physical resilience of electric generation and distribution infrastructures worldwide. Multiple sclerosis (MS) affects approximately 2.9 million people in the world, exerting a significant economic and societal burden. The disease is increasingly identified among populations considered as uncommonly affected. MS is reported in all regions of the World Health Organization (WHO) member states in Africa, the Americas, South-East Asia, Europe, the Eastern Mediterranean and the Western Pacific, affecting all ethnicities while exhibiting substantially variable prevalences. Countries with high MS prevalence and some with moderate frequencies generally have economically better structured healthcare systems. Nevertheless, health disparities in these countries are accentuated by suboptimal accessibility of care for their minorities, immigrants and other underserved populations. Social Determinants of Health (SDOH) might have an impact on morbidity and higher rates of disability. Large segments of the world population (i.e., African, Latin American, people from the Middle East and Southeast Asia) do not have access to adequate MS diagnostic procedures, compounded by reduced availability of neurologists. Healthcare disparities exist practically in every country of the world. Active wars and a large number of refugees resulting from conflict augments the challenges to healthcare systems. These global factors constitute obstacles to the adequate management of MS. A collective international path is required to facilitate access to highly effective, albeit onerous treatments, some already approved and being utilized, i.e., monoclonal antibodies and B-lymphocyte depletory agents, and others foreseen in the future as advanced therapeutic molecules continue to develop. The incorporation of utilized plastic waste into concrete mix designs for precast pavement applications presents a highly efficacious strategy, yielding demonstrably superior mechanical properties. High-density polyethylene (HDPE) is the proposed type of plastic in this study. It demonstrates remarkable performance and durability characteristics. The methodology not only significantly curtails landfill waste and incineration but also contributes to a reduction in energy consumption within the concrete sector, thereby establishing itself as a definitive sustainable solution that addresses environmental, economic, and societal imperatives. The optimal incorporation ratio for the recycled plastic within concrete matrices is determined to fall between 10% and 15%, as this range facilitates the attainment of the most desirable material properties. This study specifically focuses on plastic waste and the incorporation of recycled plastic into concrete materials. The emphasis on plastic is due to its material properties, which are particularly well-suited for concrete applications. Experimental tests are conducted on recycled concrete in comparison with the conventional concrete. The results demonstrate high mechanical properties to the recycled concrete. The novelty of this research is the type of plastic used in the concrete mix. Although most of the worldwide applications use Polyethylene Terephthalate (PET), HDPE showed exceeding properties and performance. Two important factors that influence the architectural aspect of construction materials are the heat island effect and the solar reflective index. These factors affect the energy absorption and emissivity rates of construction materials. The embodied carbon in the concrete mix impacts environmental and energy consumption rates, which directly relate to climate change, one of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Full article

This systematic literature review explores the impacts of autonomous and connected mobility systems on sustainable road transportation. The evaluation process involves a multifaceted analysis, encompassing the assessment of their capacity to mitigate accidents, energy consumption, emissions, and urban traffic congestion. As a novel approach, this paper analyses the parameters of user acceptance of technology and how these are reflected in the overall impacts of automated and connected driving. Thus, based on a behavioral intention to use the new technology model, we aim to analyze the state of the art of the overall impacts that may be correlated with individual interests. To this end, a multi-factor approach is applied and potential interactions between factors that may arise are studied in a holistic and quantitative assessment of their combined effects on transportation systems. This impact assessment is a significant challenge, as numerous factors come into play, leading to conflicting effects. Since there is no significant penetration of vehicles with medium or high levels of automation, conclusions are often obtained through simulations or estimates based on hypotheses that must be considered when analyzing the results and can lead to significant dispersion. The results confirm that these technologies can substantially improve road safety, traffic efficiency, and environmental performance. However, their large-scale deployment will critically depend on the establishment of coherent regulatory frameworks, infrastructural readiness, and societal acceptance. Comprehensive stakeholder collaboration, incorporating industry, regulatory authorities, and society, is essential to successfully address existing concerns, facilitate technological integration, and maximize the societal benefits of these transformative mobility systems. Background/Objective: The COVID-19 pandemic resulted in unprecedented societal changes globally and negatively impacted the psychosocial health of pregnant women. This study aimed to explore how direct, indirect, and unrelated factors associated with the COVID-19 pandemic influenced stress levels among pregnant women. Methods: This interpretivist qualitative study employed open-ended survey questions to capture the lived experiences of 313 pregnant women in the third trimester residing in Florida between January and March 2022, during the Omicron surge. Thematic analysis was conducted, guided by the Stress and Coping Theory and the Stress Buffering Theory. Results: Participants described a range of stressors directly and indirectly related to the COVID-19 pandemic that affected pregnant women. Themes related to increased stress were (1) fear, worry, and anxiety related to COVID-19 infection, (2) fear, worry, and anxiety related to preparedness for birth/baby due to pandemic restrictions, (3) prevention concerns associated with COVID-19, (4) lack of social support, (5) return to normalcy, (6) health-related social needs, (7) physical health issues, and (8) navigating conflict and grief. Conversely, stress-reducing factors were (1) preventive measures during the pandemic, (2) coping strategies, (3) not having to work, and (4) social support. Conclusions: Pregnant women experienced heightened stress due to a complex interplay of factors related directly or indirectly to the COVID-19 pandemic. It is important that maternity care, mental health and health-related social needs screenings and referrals, and tailored interventions are integrated into public health crises preparedness plans to limit the stress that pregnant women experience and support their well-being. Jailbreak attacks (JAs) represent a sophisticated subclass of adversarial threats wherein malicious actors craft strategically engineered prompts that subvert the intended operational boundaries of large language models (LLMs). These attacks exploit latent vulnerabilities in generative AI architectures, allowing adversaries to circumvent established safety protocols and illicitly induce the model to output prohibited, unethical, or harmful content. The emergence of such exploits underscores critical gaps in the security and controllability of modern AI systems, raising profound concerns about their societal impact and deployment in sensitive environments. In response, this study introduces an innovative defense framework that synergistically integrates language model perplexity analysis with a Multi-Agent System (MAS)-oriented detection architecture. This hybrid design aims to fortify the resilience of LLMs by proactively identifying and neutralizing jailbreak attempts, thereby ensuring the protection of user privacy and ethical integrity. The experimental setup adopts a query-driven adversarial probing strategy, in which jailbreak prompts are dynamically generated and injected into the open-source LLaMA-2 model to systematically explore potential vulnerabilities. To ensure rigorous validation, the proposed framework will be evaluated using a custom jailbreak detection benchmark encompassing metrics such as Attack Success Rate (ASR), Defense Success Rate (DSR), Defense Pass Rate (DPR), False Positive Rate, Benign Pass Rate (BPR), and End-to-End Latency. Through iterative experimentation and continuous refinement, this work endeavors to advance the defensive capabilities of LLM-based systems, enabling more trustworthy, secure, and ethically aligned deployment of generative AI in real-world environments.
