Despite extensive research on early childhood education (ECE) quality at the preschool level, toddler settings remain comparatively understudied, particularly in Chile and Latin America. Research suggests that quality ECE strengthens child development, while low-quality services can be harmful. ECE quality comprises structural features like ratios and classroom resources, and process features related to interactions within classrooms. This study examines how process and structural quality indicators are related in nurseries serving disadvantaged backgrounds. Data were collected from 51 Chilean urban classrooms serving children aged 12–24 months. Classrooms were evaluated using the Classroom Assessment Scoring System (CLASS) for toddlers, questionnaires, and checklists. Latent Profile Analysis identified process quality patterns, while multinomial regression examined associations with structural quality indicators. The results revealed low-to-moderate process quality across classrooms (M = 4.78 for Emotional and Behavioral Support; M = 2.35 for Engaged Support for Learning), with three distinct quality clusters emerging. Marginally significant differences were found between high- and low-performing clusters regarding classroom space (p = 0.06), number of toys (p = 0.08), and staff educational credentials (p = 0.01–0.07). No significant differences emerged for group sizes or adult-to-child ratios, which are heavily regulated in Chile. These findings underscore the need to strengthen quality assurance mechanisms ensuring all children access quality ECE. Full article

Investigating the coevolution between ecosystem services (ES) and human well-being (HWB) holds significant implications for achieving the sustainable operation of human–environment systems. However, limited research has focused on ES-HWB interactions in ecotourism-dominated counties. To address this gap, this study takes Chun’an County in Zhejiang Province, China, as a case study, with the research objective of exploring the processes, patterns, and mechanisms of the coevolution between ecosystem services (ES) and human well-being (HWB) in ecotourism-dominated counties. By integrating multi-source heterogeneous data, including land use data, the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI), and statistical records, and employing methods such as the dynamic equivalent factor method, the PLUS model, the coupling coordination degree model, and comprehensive evaluation, we analyzed the synergistic evolution of ES-HWB in Chun’an County from 2000 to 2020. The results indicate that (1) the ecosystem service value (ESV) fluctuated between 30.15 and 36.85 billion CNY, exhibiting a spatial aggregation pattern centered on the Qiandao Lake waterbody, with distance–decay characteristics. The PLUS model confirms ecological conservation policies optimize ES patterns. (2) The HWB index surged from 0.16 to 0.8, driven by tourism-led economic growth, infrastructure investment, and institutional innovation, facilitating a paradigm shift from low to high well-being at the county level. (3) The ES-HWB interaction evolved through three phases—disordered, antagonism, and coordination—revealing tourism as a key mediator driving coupled human–environment system sustainability via a pressure–adaptation–synergy transmission mechanism. This study not only advances the understanding of ES-HWB coevolution in ecotourism-dominated counties, but also provides a transferable methodological framework for sustainable development in similar regions. Ecosystem restoration represents a promising solution for enhancing ecosystem services and environmental sustainability. However, border regions—characterized by ecological fragility and geopolitical complexity—remain underrepresented in ecosystem service and restoration research. To fill this gap, we coupled spatially explicit models (e.g., InVEST and RUSLE) with scenario analysis to quantify the ecosystem service potential that could be achieved in China’s Tibetan borderlands under two interacting agendas: ecological restoration and border-strengthening policies. Restoration feasibility was evaluated through combining local biophysical constraints, economic viability (via restoration-induced carbon gains vs. opportunity costs), operational practicality, and simulated infrastructure expansion. The results showed that per-unit-area ecosystem services in border counties (particularly Medog, Cona, and Zayu) exceed that of interior Tibet by a factor of two to four. Combining these various constraints, approximately 4–17% of the border zone remains cost-effective for grassland or forest restoration. Under low carbon pricing (US$10 t−1 CO2), the carbon revenue generated through restoration is insufficient to offset the opportunity cost of agricultural production, constituting a major constraint. Habitat quality, soil conservation, and carbon sequestration increase modestly when induced by restoration, but a pronounced carbon–water trade-off emerges. Planned infrastructure reduces restoration benefits only slightly, whereas raising the carbon price to about US$50 t−1 CO2 substantially expands such benefits. These findings highlight both the opportunities and limits of ecosystem restoration in border regions and point to carbon pricing as the key policy lever for unlocking cost-effective restoration. Despite the increasing integration of government chatbots (GCs) into digital public service delivery, their real-world effectiveness remains limited. Drawing on the literature on algorithm aversion, trust-transfer theory, and perceived risk theory, this study investigates how the type of service agent (human vs. GCs) influences citizens’ trust of e-government services (TOE) and e-government service adoption intention (EGA). Furthermore, it explores whether the effect of trust of government (TOG) on TOE differs across agent types, and whether perceived risk (PR) serves as a boundary condition in this trust-transfer process. An online scenario-based experiment was conducted with a sample of 318 Chinese citizens. Data were analyzed using the Mann–Whitney U test and partial least squares structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM). The results reveal that, within the Chinese e-government context, citizens perceive higher risk (PR) and report lower adoption intention (EGA) when interacting with GCs compared to human agents—an indication of algorithm aversion. However, high levels of TOG mitigate this aversion by enhancing TOE. Importantly, PR moderates the strength of this trust-transfer effect, serving as a critical boundary condition. Full article

Internet of Things (IoT) applications and services have transformed the way people interact with their environment, enhancing comfort and quality of life. Additionally, Machine Learning (ML) approaches show significant promise for detecting intrusions in IoT environments. However, the high dimensionality, class imbalance, and complexity of network traffic—combined with the dynamic nature of sensor networks—pose substantial challenges to the development of efficient and effective detection algorithms. In this study, a multi-objective metaheuristic optimization approach, referred to as MOOIDS-IoT, is integrated with ML techniques to develop an intelligent cybersecurity system for IoT environments. MOOIDS-IoT combines a Genetic Algorithm (GA)-based feature selection technique with a multi-objective Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) algorithm. PSO optimizes convergence speed, model complexity, and classification accuracy by dynamically adjusting the weights and thresholds of the deployed classifiers. Furthermore, PSO integrates Pareto-based multi-objective optimization directly into the particle swarm framework, extending conventional swarm intelligence while preserving a diverse set of non-dominated solutions. In addition, the GA reduces training time and eliminates redundancy by identifying the most significant input characteristics. The MOOIDS-IoT framework is evaluated using two lightweight models—MOO-PSO-XGBoost and MOO-PSO-RF—across two benchmark datasets, namely the NSL-KDD and CICIoT2023 datasets. On CICIoT2023, MOO-PSO-RF obtains 91.42% accuracy, whereas MOO-PSO-XGBoost obtains 98.38% accuracy. In addition, both models perform well on NSL-KDD (MOO-PSO-RF: 99.66% accuracy, MOO-PSO-XGBoost: 98.46% accuracy). The proposed approach is particularly appropriate for IoT applications with limited resources, where scalability and model efficiency are crucial considerations. Full article

Can FinTech Close the VAT Gap? An Entrepreneurial, Behavioral, and Technological Analysis of Tourism SMEs

Governments worldwide are mandating e-invoicing and real-time VAT reporting, yet many cash-intensive service SMEs continue to under-report VAT, eroding fiscal revenues. This study investigates whether financial technology (FinTech) adoption can reduce this under-reporting among tourism SMEs in Greece—an economy with high seasonal spending and a persistent shadow economy. This is the first micro-level empirical study to examine how FinTech tools affect VAT compliance in this sector, offering novel insights into how technology interacts with behavioral factors to influence fiscal behavior. Drawing on the Technology Acceptance Model, deterrence theory, and behavioral tax compliance frameworks, we surveyed 214 hotels, guesthouses, and tour operators across Greece’s main tourism regions. A structured questionnaire measured five constructs: FinTech adoption, VAT compliance behavior, tax morale, perceived audit probability, and financial performance. Using Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modeling and bootstrapped moderation–mediation analysis, we find that FinTech adoption significantly improves declared VAT, with compliance fully mediating its impact on financial outcomes. The effect is especially strong among businesses led by owners with high tax morale or strong perceptions of audit risk. These findings suggest that FinTech tools function both as efficiency enablers and behavioral nudges. The results support targeted policy actions such as subsidies for e-invoicing, tax compliance training, and transparent audit communication. By integrating technological and psychological dimensions, the study contributes new evidence to the digital fiscal governance literature and offers a practical framework for narrowing the VAT gap in tourism-driven economies. To address the limited flexibility of pumped storage power stations (PSPSs) under hierarchical clearing of energy and ancillary service markets, this study proposes a joint clearing mechanism for multi-level electricity markets. A bi-level optimization model based on the Stackelberg game is developed to characterize the strategic interaction between PSPSs and the market operator. Simulation results on the IEEE 30-bus system demonstrate that the proposed mechanism captures the dynamics of nodal supply and demand, as well as time-varying network congestion. It guides PSPSs to operate more flexibly and economically. Additionally, the mechanism increases PSPS profitability, reduces system costs, and improves frequency regulation performance. This game-theoretic framework offers quantitative decision support for PSPS participation in multi-level spot markets and provides insights for optimal storage deployment and market mechanism improvement. An in-depth understanding of the spatiotemporal heterogeneity of ecosystem service (ES) trade-offs and synergies, along with their driving factors, is crucial for formulating key ecological restoration strategies and effectively allocating ecological environmental resources in the Hulunbuir region. This study employed an integrated analytical approach combining the InVEST model, ArcGIS geospatial processing, R software environment, and Optimal Parameter Geographical Detector (OPGD). The spatiotemporal patterns and driving factors of the interaction of four major ES functions in Hulunbuir area from 2000 to 2020 were studied. The research findings are as follows: (1) carbon storage (CS) and soil conservation (SC) services in the Hulunbuir region mainly show a distribution pattern of high values in the central and northeast areas, with low values in the west and southeast. Water yield (WY) exhibits a distribution pattern characterized by high values in the central–western transition zone and southeast and low values in the west. For forage supply (FS), the overall pattern is higher in the west and lower in the east. (2) The trade-off relationships between CS and WY, CS and SC, and SC and WY are primarily concentrated in the western part of Hulunbuir, while the synergistic relationships are mainly observed in the central and eastern regions. In contrast, the trade-off relationships between CS and FS, as well as FS and WY, are predominantly located in the central and eastern parts of Hulunbuir, with the intensity of these trade-offs steadily increasing. The trade-off relationship between SC and FS is almost widespread throughout HulunBuir. (3) Fractional vegetation cover, mean annual precipitation, and land use type were the primary drivers affecting ESs. Among these factors, fractional vegetation cover demonstrates the highest explanatory power, with a q-value between 0.6 and 0.9. The slope and population density exhibit relatively weak explanatory power, with q-values ranging from 0.001 to 0.2. (4) The interactions between factors have a greater impact on the inter-relationships of ESs in the Hulunbuir region than individual factors alone. The research findings have facilitated the optimization and sustainable development of regional ES, providing a foundation for ecological conservation and restoration in Hulunbuir. Full article

Knowledge-graph-based recommendation aims to provide personalized recommendation services to users based on their historical interaction information, which is of great significance for shopping transaction rates and other aspects. With the rapid growth of online shopping, the knowledge graph constructed from users’ historical interaction data now incorporates multiattribute information, including timestamps, images, and textual content. The information of multiple modalities is difficult to effectively utilize due to their different representation structures and spaces. The existing methods attempt to utilize the above information through simple embedding representation and aggregation, but ignore targeted representation learning for information with different attributes and learning effective weights for aggregation. In addition, existing methods are not sufficient for effectively modeling temporal information. In this article, we propose MTR, a knowledge graph recommendation framework based on mixture of experts network. To achieve this goal, we use a mixture-of-experts network to learn targeted representations and weights of different product attributes for effective modeling and utilization. In addition, we effectively model the temporal information during the user shopping process. A thorough experimental study on popular benchmarks validates that MTR can achieve competitive results. Urban tourism has evolved into a complex adaptive system, where unregulated expansion disrupts the ecological balance and intensifies resource stress. Understanding the dynamic evolution and resilience mechanisms of the tourism ecological health network (TEHN) is essential for supporting sustainable urban tourism as a coupled human–natural system. Using Shanghai as a case study, we applied the “vigor–organization–resilience–services” (VORS) framework to evaluate ecosystem health, which served as a constraint for constructing the TEHN, using the minimum cumulative resistance (MCR) model for the period from 2001 to 2023. A resilience framework integrating structural and functional dimensions was further developed to assess spatiotemporal evolution and guide targeted enhancement strategies. The results indicated that as ecosystem health degraded, particularly in peripheral areas, the urban TEHN in Shanghai shifted from a dispersed to a centralized structure, with limited connectivity in the periphery. The resilience of the TEHN continued to grow, with structural resilience remaining at a high level, while functional resilience still required enhancement. Specifically, the low integration and limited choice between the tourism network and the transportation system hindered tourists from selecting routes with higher ecosystem health indices. Enhancing functional resilience, while sustaining structural resilience, is essential for transforming the TEHN into a multi-centered, multi-level system that promotes efficient connectivity, ecological sustainability, and long-term adaptability. The results contribute to a systems-level understanding of tourism–ecology interactions and support the development of adaptive strategies for balancing network efficiency and environmental integrity. The growing need for secure and privacy-preserving identity management in industrial environments has exposed the limitations of traditional, centralized authentication systems. In this context, SIBERIA was developed as a modular solution that empowers users to control their own digital identities, while ensuring robust protection of critical services. The system is designed in alignment with European standards and regulations, including EBSI, eIDAS 2.0, and the GDPR. SIBERIA integrates a Self-Sovereign Identity (SSI) framework with a decentralized blockchain-based infrastructure for the issuance and verification of Verifiable Credentials (VCs). It incorporates multi-factor authentication by combining a voice biometric module, enhanced with spoofing-aware techniques to detect synthetic or replayed audio, and a behavioral biometrics module that provides continuous authentication by monitoring user interaction patterns. The system enables secure and user-centric identity management in industrial contexts, ensuring high resistance to impersonation and credential theft while maintaining regulatory compliance. SIBERIA demonstrates that it is possible to achieve both strong security and user autonomy in digital identity systems by leveraging decentralized technologies and advanced biometric verification methods. Flexible energy sources such as electric vehicles and the battery energy storage systems of intelligent distribution systems can provide system-wide auxiliary services such as frequency regulation for power systems. This paper proposes an optimal method for operating the local energy community that is based on two-stage scheduling. Firstly, the basic concepts of the local energy community and flexible service are introduced in detail. Taking LEC as the reserve unit of artificial frequency recovery, an energy information interaction model among LEC, balance service providers, and the power grid is established. Then, a two-stage scheduling framework is proposed to ensure the rationality and economy of community energy scheduling. In the first stage, day-ahead scheduling uses the energy community management center to predict the up/down flexibility capacity that LEC can provide by adjusting the BESS control parameters. In the second stage, real-time scheduling aims at maximizing community profits and scheduling LEC based on the allocation and activation of standby flexibility determined in real time. Finally, the correctness of the two-stage scheduling framework is verified through a case study. The results show that the control parameters used in the day-ahead stage can significantly affect the real-time profitability of LEC, and that LEC benefits more in the case of low BESS utilization than in the case of high BESS utilization and non-participation in frequency recovery reserve. The incorporation of waste polyethylene terephthalate (PET) as a modifier for asphalt presents a promising approach to addressing the environmental pollution associated with waste plastics while simultaneously extending the service life of road surfaces. This study investigates the fundamental physical properties and rheological properties of asphalt modified with waste PET at both high and low temperatures. Utilizing the theory of fractional derivatives, performance evaluation indicators, such as the deformation factor and viscoelasticity factor, have been developed for the assessment of waste PET-modified asphalt. The underlying mechanism of this modification was examined through scanning electron microscopy and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The results indicate that the addition of waste PET enhances the high-temperature stability of the base asphalt but reduces its resistance to cracking at low temperatures. The fractional derivative model effectively describes the dynamic shear rheological properties of waste PET-modified asphalt, achieving a maximum correlation coefficient of 0.99991. Considering the performance of modified asphalt at both high and low temperatures, the optimal concentration of waste PET was determined to be 6%. At this concentration, the minimum creep stiffness of the PET-modified asphalt was approximately 155 MPa at −6 °C. Additionally, the rutting factor of the waste PET-modified asphalt achieved a maximum value of 527.12 KPa at 52 °C. The interaction between waste PET and base asphalt was primarily physical, with mutual adsorption leading to the formation of a spatial network structure that enhanced the deformation resistance of the asphalt. This study provides a theoretical foundation and technical support for the engineering application of waste PET as a modifier in asphalt. Full article

Ecological Restoration Reshapes Ecosystem Service Interactions: A 30-Year Study from China’s Southern Red-Soil Critical Zone

Situated in the southern hilly-mountain belt of China’s “Three Zones and Four Belts Strategy”, Gannan region is a critical ecological shelter belt for the Ganjiang River. Decades of intensive mineral extraction and irrational agricultural development have rendered it into an ecologically fragile area. Consequently, multiple restoration initiatives have been implemented in the region over recent decades. However, it remains unclear how relationships among ecosystem services have evolved under these interventions and how future ecosystem management should be optimized based on these changes. Thus, in this study, we simulated and assessed the spatiotemporal dynamics of five key ESs in Gannan region from 1990 to 2020. Through integrated correlation, clustering, and redundancy analyses, we quantified ES interactions, tracked the evolution of ecosystem service bundles (ESBs), and identified their socio-ecological drivers. Despite a 31% decline in water yield, ecological restoration initiatives drove substantial improvements in key regulating services: carbon storage increased by 6.9 × 1012 gC while soil conservation rose by 4.8 × 108 t. Concurrently, regional habitat quality surged by 45% in mean scores, and food production increased by 2.1 × 105 t. Critically, synergistic relationships between habitat quality, soil retention, and carbon storage were progressively strengthened, whereas trade-offs between food production and habitat quality intensified. Further analysis revealed that four distinct ESBs—the Agricultural Production Bundle (APB), Urban Development Bundle (UDB), Eco-Agriculture Transition Bundle (ETB), and Ecological Protection Bundle (EPB)—were shaped by slope, forest cover ratio, population density, and GDP. Notably, 38% of the ETB transformed into the EPB, with frequent spatial interactions observed between the APB and UDB. These findings underscore that future ecological restoration and conservation efforts should implement coordinated, multi-service management mechanisms. Full article

This study investigates the concept of landscape services (LS), which integrate environmental and sociocultural dimensions of sustainable development. Recognizing landscapes as essential to daily life and well-being, the research aims to support sustainable spatial planning by analyzing both their potential and their actual use. The study has three main objectives: (1) to assess the potential of 16 selected landscape types to provide six key LS through expert evaluation; (2) to determine actual LS usage patterns among the local community (residents); and (3) to identify agreements and discrepancies between expert assessments and resident use. The services analyzed include providing space for daily activities; regulating spatial structure through diversity and compositional richness; enhancing physical and mental health; enabling passive and active recreation; supporting personal fulfillment; and fostering social interaction. Expert-based surveys and participatory mapping with residents were used to assess the provision and use of LS. The results indicate consistent evaluations for forest and historical urban landscapes (high potential and use) and mining and transportation landscapes (low potential and use). However, significant differences emerged for mountain LS, rated highly by experts but used minimally by residents. These insights highlight the importance of aligning expert planning with community needs to promote sustainable land use policies and reduce spatial conflicts. Full article
