Background/Objectives: In an increasingly pervasive digital environment, trait boredom has been identified as a key psychological factor in the onset and maintenance of problematic digital technology use. This systematic review aims to investigate the role of trait boredom in digital behavioral addictions, including problematic smartphone use, Internet and social media overuse, and gaming addiction, through theoretical models such as the I-PACE model and the Compensatory Internet Use Theory (CIUT). Methods: A systematic literature search was conducted across multiple scientific databases (PsycINFO, Web of Science, PubMed, and Scopus), yielding a total of 4603 records. Following the PRISMA guidelines after duplicate removal and screening based on title and abstract, 152 articles were assessed for full-text eligibility, and 28 studies met the predefined inclusion and exclusion criteria and were included in the final review. Results: Findings reveal that trait boredom functions as both a direct and indirect factor in problematic technology use. It serves as a mediator and moderator in the relationship between psychological vulnerabilities (e.g., depression, alexithymia, vulnerable narcissism) and dysfunctional digital behaviors. Furthermore, as an independent variable, it has an influence on technological variables through Fear of Missing Out (FoMO), loneliness, low self-regulation, and dysfunctional metacognitions, while protective factors such as mindfulness and attentional control mitigate its impact. Conclusions: Boredom represents a central psychological lever for understanding behavioral addictions in the digital age and should be considered a key target in preventive and therapeutic interventions focused on enhancing self-regulation and meaningful engagement with free time. Background: Perioperative care is an integral part of the procedure of a surgical operation, with strictly defined rules. The need to upgrade and improve some individual long-term processes aims at optimal patient care and the provision of high-level health services. Therefore, preoperative care is drawn up with new data resulting from the evolution of technology to upgrade the procedures that need improvement. According to the international literature, a factor considered to be of major importance is high preoperative anxiety and its effects on the patient’s postoperative course. High preoperative anxiety is postoperatively responsible for prolonged hospital stays, increased postoperative pain, decreased effect of anesthetic agents, increased amounts of analgesics, delayed healing of surgical wounds, and increased risk of infections. The use of Virtual Reality technology appears as a new method of managing preoperative anxiety. Objective: This study investigates the effect and effectiveness of Virtual Reality (VR) technology in managing preoperative anxiety in adult patients. Methods: A literature review was performed on 193 articles, published between 2017 and 2024, sourced from the scientific databases PubMed and Cochrane, as well as the trial registry ClinicalTrials, with a screening and exclusion process to meet the criterion of investigating VR technology’s effectiveness in managing preoperative anxiety in adult patients. This systematic review was conducted under the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA 2020) guidelines. Results: Out of the 193 articles, 29 were selected. All articles examined the efficacy of VR in adult patients (≥18) undergoing various types of surgery. The studies represent a total of 2.354 participants from 15 countries. There are two types of VR applications: distraction therapy and patient education. From the studies, 14 (48%) used the distraction VR intervention, 14 (48%) used the training VR intervention, and 1 (4%) used both VR interventions, using a range of validated anxiety scales such as the STAI, VAS-A, APAIS, and HADS. Among the 29 studies reviewed, 25 (86%) demonstrated statistically significant reductions in preoperative anxiety levels following the implementation of VR interventions. VR technology appears to manage preoperative anxiety effectively. It is a non-invasive and non-pharmacological intervention with minimal side effects. Conclusions: Based on the review, the management of preoperative anxiety with VR technology shows good levels of effectiveness. Further investigation of the efficacy by more studies and randomized controlled trials, with a larger patient population, is recommended to establish and universally apply VR technology in the preoperative care process as an effective method of managing preoperative anxiety. Natural Ventilation Technique of uNVeF in Urban Residential Unit Through a Case Study

The present study was motivated by the need to enhance indoor air quality and reduce airborne disease transmission in dense urban environments where high-rise residential buildings face challenges in achieving effective natural ventilation. The problem lies in the lack of scalable and convenient tools to optimize natural ventilation rate, particularly in urban settings with varying building heights. To address this, the scientific technique developed with an innovative metric, the urbanized natural ventilation effectiveness factor (uNVeF), integrates regression analysis of wind direction, velocity, air change rate per hour (ACH), window configurations, and building height to quantify ventilation efficiency. By employing a field measurement methodology, the measurements were conducted across 25 window-opening scenarios in a 13.9 m2 residential unit on the 35/F of a Hong Kong public housing building, supplemented by the Hellman Exponential Law with a site-specific friction coefficient (0.2907, R2 = 0.9232) to estimate the lower floor natural ventilation rate. The results confirm compliance with Hong Kong’s statutory 1.5 ACH requirement (Practice Note for Authorized Persons, Registered Structural Engineers, and Registered Geotechnical Engineers) and achieving a peak ACH at a uNVeF of 0.953 with 75% window opening. The results also revealed that lower floors can maintain 1.5 ACH with adjusted window configurations. Using the Wells–Riley model, the estimation results indicated significant airborne disease infection risk reductions of 96.1% at 35/F and 93.4% at 1/F compared to the 1.5 ACH baseline which demonstrates a strong correlation between ACH, uNVeF and infection risks. The uNVeF framework offers a practical approach to optimize natural ventilation and provides actionable guidelines, together with future research on the scope of validity to refine this technique for residents and developers. The implications in the building industry include setting up sustainable design standards, enhancing public health resilience, supporting policy frameworks for energy-efficient urban planning, and potentially driving innovation in high-rise residential construction and retrofitting globally. Introduction: The gut microbiota is vital for human health, and its modulation through dietary and pharmaceutical compounds has gained increasing attention. Among gut microbes, Akkermansia muciniphila has been extensively researched due to its role in maintaining intestinal barrier integrity, regulating energy metabolism, and influencing inflammatory responses. Subject: To analyze and synthesize the available scientific evidence on the influence of various bioactive compounds, including prebiotics, polyphenols, antioxidants, and pharmaceutical agents, on the abundance and activity of A. muciniphila, considering underlying mechanisms, microbial context, and its therapeutic potential for improving metabolic and intestinal health. Methods: A systematic literature review was conducted in accordance with the PRISMA 2020 guidelines. Databases such as PubMed, ScienceDirect, Scopus, Web of Science, SciFinder-n, and Google Scholar were searched for publications from 2004 to 2025. Experimental studies in animal models or humans that evaluated the impact of bioactive compounds on the abundance or activity of A. muciniphila were prioritized. The selection process was managed using the Covidence platform. Results: A total of 78 studies were included in the qualitative synthesis. This review compiles and analyzes experimental evidence on the interaction between A. muciniphila and various bioactive compounds, including prebiotics, antioxidants, flavonoids, and selected pharmaceutical agents. Factors such as the chemical structure of the compounds, microbial environment, underlying mechanisms, production of short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs), and mucin interactions were considered. Compounds such as resistant starch type 2, GOS, 2′-fucosyllactose, quercetin, resveratrol, metformin, and dapagliflozin showed beneficial effects on A. muciniphila through direct or indirect pathways. Discussion: Variability across studies reflects the influence of multiple variables, including compound type, dose, intervention duration, experimental models, and analytical methods. These differences emphasize the need for a contextualized approach when designing microbiota-based interventions. Conclusions: A. muciniphila emerges as a promising therapeutic target for managing metabolic and inflammatory diseases. Further mechanistic and clinical studies are necessary to validate its role and to support the development of personalized microbiota-based treatment interventions. Full article

In recent decades, information technology has grown. Computers have become a daily activity, facilitating access to information, faster communication and faster work. If used responsibly, it has many advantages. Objectives: To explore the potential link between prolonged use of computer input devices—such as keyboards and mice—and the development of compressive neuropathies, including carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) and cubital tunnel syndrome (CuTS), in individuals whose daily routines are heavily reliant on computer-based activities. Methods: A comprehensive review of the literature was undertaken to assess the correlation between the use of computer input devices and the incidence of compressive neuropathies in the upper limbs, with particular attention to repetitive strain, ergonomic posture deviations, and personal risk factors. Results: Current evidence indicates a potential association between prolonged computer use and the development of upper limb compressive neuropathies; however, a definitive consensus within the scientific literature remains elusive. Repetitive movements and non-neutral postures appear to be significant contributing factors, particularly among individuals with predisposing risk factors. Despite increasing awareness of this issue, standardized, evidence-based clinical guidelines for the evaluation and management of work-related nerve disorders remain lacking. Conclusions: While the relationship between computer use and compressive neuropathies remains debated, healthcare professionals should be aware of the risks, particularly in individuals exposed to repetitive strain and ergonomic stress. Further research and the development of clinical guidelines are needed to better understand and manage these work-related conditions. Full article

Background: Percutaneous electrolysis (PE) is a minimally invasive procedure that utilizes galvanic current delivered through a needle. PE is increasingly employed for musculoskeletal disorders, despite the scarcity of scientific evidence supporting its use. The aim of this systematic review is to synthesize the existing evidence and explore the applications of PE in rehabilitation. Methods: In line with Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guidelines, a systematic search was conducted across the PubMed, Web of Science, Scopus, and PEDro databases from inception to July 2025. The search strategy employed the term “Percutaneous Electrolysis” without applying additional filters or time restrictions, ensuring a comprehensive search. Cited references from screened articles were also evaluated for potential inclusion. Studies were included if they met the following criteria: peer-reviewed articles, intervention-based research, relevance to the topic, and publication in English. Results: Of the 181 papers retrieved, 143 were excluded for various reasons, leaving 38 studies. The evidence suggests that PE appears effective in reducing pain and improving function, particularly when combined with exercises such as eccentric training or stretching, though inconsistencies in protocols and patient characteristics, along with unclear mechanisms, show that it warrants further investigation. Conclusions: In conclusion, while PE emerges as a promising therapeutic strategy for musculoskeletal disorders, its full integration into rehabilitation practice necessitates further rigorous research to standardize treatment protocols, elucidate the underlying mechanism, and validate its cost-effectiveness. These steps are essential to establish PE as a robust and evidence-based option within the field of rehabilitation. Full article

Background/Objectives: Despite advancements in surgery, esophagectomy remains one of the most challenging and complex gastrointestinal surgical procedures, burdened by significant perioperative morbidity and mortality rates, as well as high financial costs. Recognizing the need for standardized care provided by a multidisciplinary healthcare team, the EUropean PErioperative MEdical Networking (EUPEMEN) initiative developed a dedicated protocol for perioperative care of patients undergoing esophagectomy, aiming to enhance recovery, reduce morbidity, and homogenize care delivery across European healthcare systems. Methods: Developed through a multidisciplinary European collaboration of five partners, the protocol incorporates expert consensus and the latest scientific evidence. It addresses the entire perioperative pathway, from preoperative preparation to hospital discharge and postoperative recovery, emphasizing patient-centered care, risk mitigation, and early functional restoration. Results: The implementation of the EUPEMEN esophagectomy protocol is expected to improve patient outcomes through a day-by-day structured prehabilitation plan, meticulous intraoperative management, and proactive postoperative rehabilitation. The approach promotes reduced postoperative complications, earlier return to oral intake, and shorter hospital stays, while supporting multidisciplinary coordination. Conclusions: The EUPEMEN protocol for esophagectomy provides a comprehensive guideline framework for optimizing perioperative care in esophageal surgery. In addition, it serves as a practical guide for healthcare professionals committed to advancing surgical recovery and standardizing clinical practice across diverse care environments across Europe. Optimizing Kang-to-Room Area Ratios for Thermal Comfort in Traditional Chinese Architecture: An Empirical and Simulation-Based Approach

Traditional Chinese Kang heating systems have been used for over two millennia in northern China, yet their thermal efficiency and optimal design parameters lack scientific validation. This study aims to establish evidence-based guidelines for Kang-to-room area ratios to enhance thermal comfort and energy efficiency in rural architecture. We conducted direct measurements in a controlled experimental house (24 m2) in Huludao City, collecting temperature and humidity data from Kang surfaces and interior spaces over five-day periods. A benchmark curve for heat flux density was developed based on specific fuelwood consumption rates (1 kg/m2). TRNSYS simulations were employed to validate experimental data and analyze thermal performance in the historical Qingning Palace (352 m2) at Shenyang Imperial Palace. The benchmark curve demonstrated high accuracy with a Mean Absolute Error of 0.46 °C and Root Mean Square Error of 0.53 °C when compared to measured temperatures over the 48 h validation period; these values are well within acceptable ranges for calibrated thermal models. Simulations revealed optimal thermal comfort conditions when heat dissipation parameters were scaled appropriately for building size. The optimal Kang-to-room area ratio ranges from 0.28 to 0.69, with the existing Qingning Palace ratio (0.34) falling within this range, validating traditional design wisdom. This research provides a scientific foundation for sustainable architectural practices, bridging traditional knowledge with contemporary thermal engineering principles for both heritage preservation and modern rural construction applications. Background/Objectives: Knee osteoarthritis is one of the most significant diseases globally and in Portugal. Despite the availability of international guidelines, there is a lack of tailored, evidence-based recommendations specifically for Portuguese physiotherapists to manage their knee osteoarthritis patients with non-pharmacological and non-surgical interventions. This study aimed to develop a clinical practice guideline that integrates the latest international evidence with local clinical practice data to enhance patient outcomes. Methods: To achieve the objective, a comprehensive search was conducted in November 2024 across major health-related databases, to identify robust and recent evidence regarding the efficacy of non-pharmacological and non-surgical interventions, as well as their usage in the national context. Two key sources were identified: An umbrella and a mixed-methods study. Data from both sources were independently reviewed and integrated through a comparative analysis to identify interventions with robust scientific support and high local acceptability. Recommendations were then formulated and categorized into gold (strong), silver (moderate), and bronze (weak) levels based on evidence quality and clinical relevance. A decision-making flowchart was developed to support guideline implementation and clinical usage. Results: The integrated analysis identified three gold-level interventions, namely Nutrition/Weight Loss, Resistance Exercise, and Self-care/Education. Five silver-level recommendations were Aerobic Exercise, Balneology/Spa, Extracorporeal Shockwave Therapy, Electrical Stimulation, and Manual Therapy. Similarly, five bronze-level recommendations comprised Kinesio Taping, Stretching, Ultrasound Therapy, Thermal Agents, and Walking Aids. Conclusions: This clinical practice guideline provides a context-specific, evidence-based framework for Portuguese physiotherapists managing knee osteoarthritis. By bridging international evidence with local clinical practice, the guideline aims to facilitate optimal patient care and inform future research and guideline updates. Full article

Objective: To systematically review the scientific literature on lysergic acid amide (LSA), focusing on its physical, neurobiological, and social effects, as well as its potential risks and therapeutic uses. Methods: A systematic review was conducted across PubMed, Google Scholar, and Web of Science up to December 2023, using keywords such as “ergine,” “lysergic acid amide,” and “legal high.” Studies were included if they reported original human data on the physical, neurobiological, psychological, or social effects of LSA; seventeen studies were included. Animal studies, in vitro research, and non-original articles were excluded. Two independent reviewers screened and selected the studies, with a third resolving discrepancies. Data were extracted using a standardized form. The review followed PRISMA guidelines and was prospectively registered on the Open Science Framework. Results: LSA is primarily consumed through preparations made from the seeds of Convolvulaceae plants. Reported effects include euphoria, hallucinations, nausea, and anxiety. Severe adverse outcomes, such as psychosis, hypertension, and hospitalization, have also been documented. Some evidence suggests its potential therapeutic application for cluster headaches. However, variability in dosing and misinformation on digital platforms heighten the risks associated with LSA use. Conclusions: LSA poses significant health risks, exacerbated by online misinformation and variability in its effects, and a lack of scientific studies. Background/Objectives: The use of digital technologies among children and adolescents has been increasing exponentially, raising concerns about the potential impacts on physical, mental, cognitive, educational, and social development. Understanding these effects is key to informing clinical and educational practices and public policies that promote digital wellbeing in childhood and adolescence. The main objective of this study was to map the latest available scientific evidence on the patterns of digital technology use by children and adolescents and its main impact, identifying risk factors, opportunities, and strategies for promoting digital wellbeing. Methods: A rapid review was carried out following the Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) guidelines. Quantitative, qualitative, and mixed studies published between 2020 and 2025, in Portuguese or English, that addressed the use of digital technologies by children and adolescents were included. The assessment of methodological quality was based on JBI’s Critical Appraisal Tools. Results: Ten studies from diverse contexts showed an association between excessive screen time and risks of sedentary lifestyles, sleep disorders, anxiety, depression, attention difficulties, and low academic performance. Occasional benefits arose with adult mediation and educational use; parental mediation and socioeconomic background were key factors. Conclusions: The use of digital technologies is a complex and multifactorial phenomenon that requires integrated approaches; the promotion of digital literacy, public policies for equitable access to quality digital resources, and longitudinal and intercultural studies are recommended to clarify causal relationships and adapt interventions to local contexts. Physics-informed neural networks (PINNs) have emerged as a transformative methodology integrating deep learning with scientific computing. This review establishes a three-dimensional analytical framework to systematically decode PINNs’ development through methodological innovation, theoretical breakthroughs, and cross-disciplinary convergence. The contributions include threefold: First, identifying the co-evolutionary path of algorithmic architectures from adaptive optimization (neural tangent kernel-guided weighting achieving 230% convergence acceleration in Navier-Stokes solutions) to hybrid numerical-deep learning integration (5× speedup via domain decomposition) and second, constructing bidirectional theory-application mappings where convergence analysis (operator approximation theory) and generalization guarantees (Bayesian-physical hybrid frameworks) directly inform engineering implementations, as validated by 72% cost reduction compared to FEM in high-dimensional spaces (p<0.01,n=15 benchmarks). Third, pioneering cross-domain knowledge transfer through application-specific architectures: TFE-PINN for turbulent flows (5.12±0.87% error in NASA hypersonic tests), ReconPINN for medical imaging (SSIM=+0.18±0.04 on multi-institutional MRI), and SeisPINN for seismic systems (0.52±0.18 km localization accuracy). We further present a technological roadmap highlighting three critical directions for PINN 2.0: neuro-symbolic, federated physics learning, and quantum-accelerated optimization. This work provides methodological guidelines and theoretical foundations for next-generation scientific machine learning systems. Full article

Transdermal drug delivery (TDD) is an increasingly important non-invasive method for administering active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) through the skin barrier, offering advantages such as improved therapeutic efficacy and reduced systemic side effects. As demand increases for patient-friendly and minimally invasive treatment options, TDD has attracted substantial attention in research and clinical practice. This review summarizes recent advances enhancing skin permeability through chemical enhancers (e.g., ethanol, fatty acids, terpenes), physical (e.g., iontophoresis, microneedles, sonophoresis), and nanotechnological methods (e.g., liposomes, ethosomes, solid lipid nanoparticles, and transferosomes). A comprehensive literature analysis, including scientific publications, regulatory guidelines, and patents, was conducted to identify innovative methods and materials used to overcome the barrier properties of the stratum corneum. Special emphasis was placed on in vitro, ex vivo, and in vivo evaluation techniques for such as Franz diffusion cells for assessing drug permeation and skin interactions. The findings highlight the importance of active physical methods, passive nanostructured systems, and chemical penetration enhancers. In conclusion, integrating multiple analytical techniques is essential for the rational design and optimization of effective transdermal drug delivery systems. Full article

Background/Objectives: Artificial intelligence (AI) is beginning to be applied in wound ballistics, showing preliminary potential to improve the accuracy and objectivity of forensic analyses. This review explores the current state of AI applications in forensic firearm wound analysis, emphasizing its potential to address challenges such as subjective interpretations and data heterogeneity. Methods: A systematic review adhering to PRISMA guidelines was conducted using databases such as Scopus and Web of Science. Keywords focused on AI and GSW classification identified 502 studies, narrowed down to 4 relevant articles after rigorous screening based on inclusion and exclusion criteria. Results: These studies examined the role of deep learning (DL) models in classifying GSWs by type, shooting distance, and entry or exit characteristics. The key findings demonstrated that DL models like TinyResNet, ResNet152, and ConvNext Tiny achieved accuracy ranging from 87.99% to 98%. Models were effective in tasks such as classifying GSWs and estimating shooting distances. However, most studies were exploratory in nature, with small sample sizes and, in some cases, reliance on animal models, which limits generalizability to real-world forensic scenarios. Conclusions: Comparisons with other forensic AI applications revealed that large, diverse datasets significantly enhance model performance. Transparent and interpretable AI systems utilizing techniques are essential for judicial acceptance and ethical compliance. Despite the encouraging results, the field remains in an early stage of development. Limitations highlight the need for standardized protocols, cross-institutional collaboration, and the integration of multimodal data for robust forensic AI systems. Future research should focus on overcoming current data and validation constraints, ensuring the ethical use of human forensic data, and developing AI tools that are scientifically sound and legally defensible. The Influence of Traps on the Self-Heating Effect and THz Response of GaN HEMTs

This study systematically investigates the effects of trap concentration on self-heating and terahertz (THz) responses in GaN HEMTs using Sentaurus TCAD. Traps, inherently unavoidable in semiconductors, can be strategically introduced to engineer specific energy levels that establish competitive dynamics between the electron momentum relaxation time and the carrier lifetime. A simulation-based exploration of this mechanism provides significant scientific value for enhancing device performance through self-heating mitigation and THz response optimization. An AlGaN/GaN heterojunction HEMT model was established, with trap concentrations ranging from 0 to 5×1017 cm3. The analysis reveals that traps significantly enhance channel current (achieving 3× gain at 1×1017 cm3) via new energy levels that prolong carrier lifetime. However, elevated trap concentrations (>1×1016 cm3) exacerbate self-heating-induced current collapse, reducing the min-to-max current ratio to 0.9158. In THz response characterization, devices exhibit a distinct DC component (Udc) under non-resonant detection (ωτ1). At a trap concentration of 1×1015 cm3, Udc peaks at 0.12 V when VgDC=7.8 V. Compared to trap-free devices, a maximum response attenuation of 64.89% occurs at VgDC=4.9 V. Furthermore, Udc demonstrates non-monotonic behavior with concentration, showing local maxima at 4×1015 cm3 and 7×1015 cm3, attributed to plasma wave damping and temperature-gradient-induced electric field variations. This research establishes trap engineering guidelines for GaN HEMTs: a concentration of 4×1015 cm3 optimally enhances conductivity while minimizing adverse impacts on both self-heating and the THz response, making it particularly suitable for high-sensitivity terahertz detectors.
