This study explores the development and optimization of TiO2-based photoactive coatings enhanced with silver (Ag)—to boost photocatalytic performance—for application on glass-fiber-reinforced polyester (GFRP) and epoxy (GFRE) composites. The influence of Ag content on the structural, physicochemical, and functional properties of the coatings was evaluated. The TiO2-Ag coating showed the best performance and was tested under UV-A irradiation and visible light (Vis), with high efficiency in VOC degradation, self-cleaning, and microbial activity. The tests were repeated in multiple runs, showing high reproducibility in the results obtained. In GFRP, pollutant and microorganism removal ratios of more than 90% were observed. In contrast, GFRE showed a lower adhesion and stability of the coating. This result is attributed to incompatibility problems with the epoxy matrix, which significantly limited its functional performance. The results highlight the feasibility of using the TiO2-Ag coating on GFRP substrates, even under visible light. Under real-world conditions for 351 days, the coating on GFRP maintained its stability. This type of material has high potential for application in modular building systems using sandwich panels, as well as in facades and automotive components, where self-cleaning and contaminant-control properties are essential. In recent years, industries have prioritized low-cost, biodegradable, long-lasting materials. Businesses are focusing on composite materials using the world’s abundant natural fibers. Researchers and academics are considering using plant and animal fibers as polymer composite reinforcement to enhance their sustainability. In this context, finding new plant fibers for polymer composite reinforcement is important. This study hybridizes jute and acacia fibers using compression molding and changing epoxy fiber weight percentages to create novel polymer composites. This article examines how fiber orientation affects mechanical and morphological analysis for manufactured jute–acacia hybrid composites. The composite had the highest tensile strength of 33.59 MPa, a flexural strength of 66.42 MPa, an impact strength of 3.22 J/m, and a hardness of 85 Shore D. The scanning electron microscope (SEM) showed that alkali treatment filled microscopic cracks, gaps, and pores in natural fiber composites, improving their tensile, flexural, and impact strength. Sandwich composites had better mechanical and morphological qualities than two-layer stack patterned composites. The research findings of jute–acacia fiber-based composites can be applied in various industrial applications. Full article

This paper presents an experimental investigation of six different types of composite sandwich panels manufactured from waste-based materials, which are comprised of two different types of skins (made from hemp and recycled PET (Polyethylene terephthalate) fabrics with bio-epoxy resin) and three different cores (composite wood, recycled plastic, and styrofoam) materials. The skins of these sandwich panels were investigated under five different environmental conditions (normal air, water, hygrothermal, saline solution, and 80 °C elevated temperature) over seven months to evaluate their durability performance. In addition, the tensile and dynamic mechanical properties of those sandwich panels were studied. The bending behavior of cores and sandwich panels was also investigated and compared. The results indicated that elevated temperatures are 30% more detrimental to fiber composite laminates than normal water. Composite laminates made of hemp are more sensitive to environmental conditions than composite laminates made of recycled PET. A higher-density core makes panels more rigid and less susceptible to indentation failure. The flexible plastic cores are found to be up to 25% more effective at increasing the strength of sandwich panels than brittle wood cores. Full article

How to solve hydrogen embrittlement (HE) is a key issue that urgently needs to be addressed in the hydrogen energy industry. The use of hydrogen barrier coatings can effectively reduce the occurrence of HE. In this article, we utilized the epoxy resin (ER) as the base coating and the graphene (GN) and the silicon carbide (SiC) as the additives to prepare the (GN-ER)/(SiC-ER)/(GN-ER) sandwich structure composite hydrogen barrier coatings by the spin coating method and investigated the effect of coating composite ways on the hydrogen barrier performance. The GN-ER and the SiC-ER are used as the hydrogen barrier layer and the hydrogen capture layer, respectively, in order to improve the hydrogen barrier performances jointly. The XRD and the SEM were used to characterize their phase compositions and microstructures, and the hydrogen barrier performances were analyzed by the electrochemical hydrogen permeation curves. The adhesive strength was characterized through the pull-out method. Compared to the single-layer and the double-layer structures, sandwich structures can effectively enhance the hydrogen barrier performance of the coatings, such as the relatively low electrochemical hydrogen diffusion coefficient (Dt, 3.88 × 10−8 cm2·s−1), the relatively high permeation reduction factor (PRF, 59) and adhesive strength (10.9 MPa). This research may provide a theoretical basis for improving the hydrogen barrier performance of coatings. The (GN-ER)/(SiC ER)/(GN-ER) sandwich structures composite hydrogen barrier coatings can be expected to be used in the field of safe hydrogen storage and transportation. Full article

The growing demand for sustainable composites has increased interest in natural fiber reinforcements as alternatives to synthetic materials. This study evaluates the bending properties of sandwich structures with flax fibers and 3D-printed lightweight foaming PLA cores compared to conventional designs using glass fibers and traditional cores. Three-point bending tests (EN 310) and density profile analysis showed that, despite its lower density, the 3D-printed foaming PLA core achieved a modulus of elasticity of 2269.19 MPa and a bending strength of 31.46 MPa, demonstrating its potential for lightweight applications. However, natural fibers influenced resin absorption, affecting core saturation compared to glass fibers. The use of bio-based epoxy and foaming PLA contributes to a lower environmental footprint, while 3D printing enables precise material optimization. These findings confirm that 3D-printed cores offer a competitive and sustainable alternative, with future research focusing on further optimization of internal structure to enhance mechanical performance. Within the range of composite laminates for structural applications, sandwich laminates are a special category intended for applications characterized by high flexural stresses. As it is well known from the technical literature, structural sandwich laminates have a simple configuration consisting of two skins of very strong material, to which the flexural strength is delegated, between which an inner layer (core) of light material with sufficient shear strength is interposed. As an example, a sandwich configuration widely used in civil, naval, and mechanical engineering is that obtained with fiberglass skins and a core of various materials, such as polyurethane foam or another lightweight material, depending on the application. Increasingly stringent regulations aimed at protecting the environment by reducing harmful emissions of carbon dioxide and carbon monoxide have directed recent research towards the development of new composites and new sandwiches characterized by low environmental impact. Among the various green composite solutions proposed in the literature, a very promising category is that of high-performance biocomposites, which use bio-based matrices reinforced by fiber reinforcements. This approach can also be used to develop green sandwiches for structural applications, consisting of biocomposite skins and cores made by low-environmental impact or renewable materials. In order to make a contribution to this field, a structural sandwich consisting of high-performance sisal–epoxy biocomposite skins and an innovative renewable core made of balsa wood laminates with appropriate lay-ups has been developed and then properly characterized in this work. Through a systematic theoretical–experimental analysis of three distinct core configurations, the unidirectional natural core, the cross-ply type, and the angle-ply type, it has been shown how the use of natural balsa gives rise to inefficient sandwiches, whereas performance optimization is fully achieved by considering the angle-ply core type [±45/90]. Finally, the subsequent comparison with literature data of similar sandwiches has shown how the optimal configuration proposed can be advantageously used to replace synthetic glass–resin sandwiches widely used in various industrial sectors (mechanical engineering, shipbuilding, etc.) and in civil engineering. In cold climate regions, ships navigate through diverse ice conditions, making the varied interaction scenarios between hulls and ice critically important. It is crucial to consider the safety and integrity of the hull during an ice–hull interaction, especially in the presence of lightweight structures. Proper design and material selection can help improve the structure’s ability to withstand ice forces. Within the scope, understanding the behavior of ice and its interaction with the structure can inform the development of appropriate measures to minimize possible damage or failure. The current study focuses on the interactions occurring during the impact loading phases, which are characteristic of thin first-year ice. A sandwich structure made with carbon fiber-reinforced epoxy prepreg and PVC core was investigated. Low-velocity ice impact was modelled using the Ansys Workbench 2023 R2 and LS-DYNA R11 explicit solver. As the material model, the *MAT055 was chosen based on the literature, while ice was represented with its equation of state. The Tsai Wu criterion was adopted to identify tensile and compressive failure in the matrix and fibers. This simulation allowed us to evaluate how the composite material responds to ice impacts, considering factors such as the speed of the impact, the shape and thickness of the ice, and the properties of the composite material itself. This research delves into the design, modeling, and finite element impact analysis of the segmented sandwich composite armor system subjected to impact loading, considering different parameters such as materials to be used, armor height, and armor design configuration. Initial studies were performed to select the ideal model that will provide the best impact resistance at the least weight and with minimal fabrication requirements. Material type, thickness, and overall model configuration were defined during the initial model development period. Once the final design was defined, finite element analysis was performed using 2017 ABAQUS software to observe the performance of the model and to validate the efficiency of the chosen armor. Based on the results from the material selection and thickness validation, the optimal design with the best impact resistance was noted as 1.2 mm thick rectangular segmented silicon carbide tiles, serving as the top layer that covers the three-level gradient core composed of a titanium metal honeycomb frame filled with silicon carbide inserts, and finally a 2 mm thick glass epoxy composite layer made from four laminas in a 0/45/90/-45-degree configuration serving as the last layer of the armor. Composite materials are popular substitutes for conventional materials owing to their high strength-to-weight ratio. Reinforcements in the form of woven fabric clothes are common due to their ease of availability and preparation. The use of hybrid intra-ply as reinforcements synergises the advantages of more than one type of fibre. The current work focuses on the preparation of woven carbon fibre (CF) and carbon–Kevlar (CF-K) intra-ply hybrid fibre-based composites. Epoxy resin was used as the matrix and balsa sheet was used as the sandwich material. The angle of orientation of the woven fibre cloth was varied from 0° to 45° along the direction of loading. The dynamic properties of prepared samples were experimentally investigated using an impact hammer test. The natural frequency and damping ratio were influenced by the angle of orientation and the fibre reinforcement. The CF-K hybrid composite showed better dynamic properties when compared with the CF composite. The natural frequency was highest for the 0° sample, it reduced with the angle of orientation, and a reverse trend was observed for damping ratio. Both CF- and CF-K-based composites showed similar trends. The storage modulus variation also showed a similar trend as that of the natural frequency for both types of samples with orientation, but a reverse trend was observed for loss modulus, i.e., the loss modulus increased with the change in the angle of orientation, indicating the improvement in energy storage ability of the composite. The subject of this article is an experimental analysis of the control system of a composite-based piezoelectric actuator and an aluminum-based piezoelectric actuator. Analysis was performed for both the unimorph and bimorph structures. To carry out laboratory research, two piezoelectric actuators with a cantilever sandwich beam structure were manufactured. In the first beam, the carrier layer was made of glass-reinforced epoxy composite (FR4), and in the second beam, it was made of 1050 aluminum. A linear mathematical model of both actuators was also developed. A modification of the method of selecting weights in the LQR control algorithm for a cantilever-type piezoelectric actuator was proposed. The weights in the R matrix for the actuator containing a carrier layer made of stiffer material should be smaller than those for the actuator containing a carrier layer made of less stiff material. Additionally, regardless of the carrier layer material, in the case of a bimorph, the weight in the R matrix that corresponds to the control voltage of the compressing MFC patch should be smaller than the weight corresponding to the control voltage of the stretching MFC patch. Despite significant advancements in bio-based natural-fiber-reinforced composites, the recyclability/reprocessing of thermoset composites remains a persistent challenge that needs to be addressed. In the present study, an effort is made to provide a justification for the recyclability/reprocessing assessment of sandwich composite panels made with ‘recyclate’ (i.e., recycled flax/bio-based epoxy composite) cores and (flax/bio-based epoxy) skins produced by liquid composite molding. Resin transfer molding and vacuum-assisted resin infusion processes were used to investigate the influence of production processes on mechanical properties. Two different recyclate sizes—4 mm and 10 mm—were used to fabricate sandwich composite panels to study the effect of size on the mechanical properties of the panels. This study aims to compare the qualities of sandwich panels to those of virgin composite panels in terms of their physical (density) and mechanical properties (tensile and flexural). Additionally, the recyclate packing was verified by employing digital microscopy. The results illustrated that the sandwich panels made with the 4 mm recyclates exhibited better mechanical properties compared to those made with the 10 mm recyclates. In comparison with virgin composite panels, the sandwich composite panels made of flax fiber and (flax/epoxy) recyclate exhibited significantly higher flexural moduli, which was attributed to their moments of inertia. This article emphasizes recycling/reprocessing and demonstrates an effective closed-loop approach. Thus, by preserving the structural integrity of recyclates, sandwich panels could be advantageous for semi-structural applications. Full article

Cellulose is classified as one of the most abundant biopolymers in nature. Its excellent properties have gained a lot of interest as an alternative material for synthetic polymers. Nowadays, cellulose can be processed into numerous derivative products, such as microcrystalline cellulose (MCC) and nanocrystalline cellulose (NCC). MCC and NCC have demonstrated outstanding mechanical properties owing to their high degree of crystallinity. One of the promising applications of MCC and NCC is high-performance paper. It can be utilized as a substitute for the aramid paper that has been commercially used as a honeycomb core material for sandwich-structured composites. In this study, MCC and NCC were prepared by extracting cellulose from the Cladophora algae resource. MCC and NCC possessed different characteristics because of their distinct morphologies. Furthermore, MCC and NCC were formed into a paper at various grammages and then impregnated with epoxy resin. The effect of paper grammage and epoxy resin impregnation on the mechanical properties of both materials was studied. Then, MCC and NCC paper was prepared as a raw material for honeycomb core applications. The results showed that epoxy-impregnated MCC paper outperformed epoxy-impregnated NCC paper with a compression strength of 0.72 MPa. The interesting result from this study is that the compression strength of the MCC-based honeycomb core was comparable to the commercial ones despite being made of a natural resource, which is sustainable and renewable. Therefore, cellulose-based paper is promising to be used for honeycomb core applications in sandwich-structured composites. Full article

Composite sandwich structures have been used in high performance applications such as wind turbine blades, due to their unique lightweight structure and superior mechanical properties. In the current study, a new liquid thermoplastic and thermoset resin were used to fabricate four different composite sandwich panels with two various foam types and densities. Composites made with epoxy resin are presented to comprehensively compare the mechanical properties of sandwich structures to elium resin. In the case of the mechanical properties and due to a new liquid thermoplastic resin, extensive comparisons of three-point bending, climbing drum peel, and flatwise tensile strength were investigated and compared with each other. The flexural and flatwise strength of sandwich composite increased by 53% and 75%, respectively, when using Elium resin. Then, the highest value was shown in the GF/PVC/ELIUM structure. The results revealed that Elium resin could be excellent in the case of mechanical properties to replace traditional resins to fabricate various composite structures and manage the challenge of recyclable composites. Elium resin can replace thermoset-based resins for the manufacturing of laminates and composites that are fully recyclable at room temperature with comparable mechanical properties. Full article

Study on Flexural Behavior of Glass Fiber Reinforced Plastic Sandwich Composites Using Liquid Thermoplastic Resin

Experimental and numerical studies of composite sandwich structures are warranted to reap the benefits of these materials when they are well designed. In the current research, new liquid thermoplastic and epoxy resins were used to fabricate four composite sandwich panels with two additional foam types and different densities in the wind turbine industry. A comprehensive comparison of three-point bending test results was made. Finite-element-based simulations using the ABAQUS program with Hashin’s damage criterion were conducted to examine the failure behavior of the GFRP sandwich composites. The flexural behavior of the glass-fiber-reinforced plastic (GFRP) sandwich panels was investigated and compared with the experiments. The results show that the GF/PVC/Elium composite panel gives the highest load absorption, flexural strength, flexural modulus, core shear ultimate strength, and facing stress due to effect of the core foam and resin types. For the PVC foam core sandwich panel, using thermoplastic resin increased the flexural strength by 18% compared to that of the epoxy resin. The simulation results show excellent agreement between the finite-element-predicted failure loads and the experimental results. Full article

Honeycomb sandwich structures (HSSs) are excellent candidates for light and efficient microwave-absorbing materials. In this work, we design an HSS using SiO2 fiber-reinforced epoxy resin (SiO2f/ER) composites as both the top and bottom layers to improve the impedance matching with free space. Target dielectric properties of the honeycomb and coated lossy material of the HSS were calculated based on the multilayer transmission line theory, metal backplane model, and homogenization theory. In addition, the interface effect between the SiO2f/ER and honeycomb of the HSS was discussed theoretically, experimentally, and numerically, indicating a 1–4% contribution of microwave absorption resulting from the interface. By analyzing the equivalent resistance, equivalent capacitance, as well as equivalent inductance, the enhanced microwave absorption of HSS is attributed to the formation of the interfacial transition zone, which benefits both impedance matching and electromagnetic loss.
