Due to increased precipitation intensity and sea-level rise, low-lying coastal roads are increasingly vulnerable to subbase saturation. Widely applied lumped hydrological approaches cannot accurately represent time and space-varying groundwater levels in some highly conductive coastal soils, calling for more sophisticated tools. This study assesses the suitability of the Gridded Surface Subsurface Hydrologic Analysis model (GSSHA) for representing hydrological processes and groundwater dynamics in a unique coastal roadway setting in Alabama. A high-resolution model was developed to assess a 2 km road segment and was calibrated for hydraulic conductivity and aquifer bottom levels using observed groundwater level (GWL) data. The model configuration included a fixed groundwater tidal boundary representing Mobile Bay, a refined land cover classification, and an extreme precipitation event simulation representing Hurricane Sally. Results indicated good agreement between modeled and observed groundwater levels, particularly during short-duration high-intensity events, with NSE values reaching up to 0.83. However, the absence of dynamic tidal forcing limited its ability to replicate certain fine-scale groundwater fluctuations. During the Hurricane Sally simulation, over two-thirds of the segment remained saturated for over 6 h, and some locations exceeded 48 h of pavement saturation. The findings underscore the importance of incorporating shallow groundwater processes in hydrologic modeling for coastal roads. This replicable modeling framework may assist DOTs in identifying critical roadway segments to improve drainage infrastructure in order to increase resiliency. Full article

Effective management and handling of construction and demolition waste (CDW) can yield significant technical and environmental benefits for road pavement construction. This article aims to provide a comprehensive and up-to-date chronological review of studies on the mechanical performance of asphalt mixtures—primarily hot mix asphalt (HMA)—incorporating recycled concrete aggregate (RCA). Since the main limitation of RCA is the presence of residual adhered mortar, the review also includes studies that applied various surface treatments (mechanical, chemical, and thermal, among others) to enhance mixture performance. The article summarizes the experimental procedures used and highlights the key findings and conclusions of the reviewed research. Although the results are varied and sometimes contradictory—mainly due to the source variability and heterogeneity of RCA—the use of these materials is technically viable. Moreover, their application can provide environmental, social, and economic advantages, particularly in the construction of low-traffic roadways. Finally, the article identifies research gaps and offers recommendations for future researches. Full article

To enhance the understanding of dust diffusion laws in tunnel blasting operations of metal mines and determine optimal ventilation dust removal times, a scaled physical model of a metal mine tunneling face under the China Zijin Mining Group was established based on field measurements. Numerical simulation was employed to investigate airflow movement and dust migration in the tunneling roadway, and the fundamental features of airflow field and dust diffusion laws after tunnel blasting operations in the fully mechanized excavation face were revealed. The effects of three main factors included airflow rate (Q), ventilation distance (S), and tunnel length (L) on the dust removal time after tunnel blasting operations were investigated based on the orthogonal design method. Results indicated that reducing the dust concentration in the roadway to 10 mg/m3 required 53 min. The primary factors influencing dust removal time, in order of significance, were determined to be L, Q, and S. The lowest dust concentration occurs when the ventilation distance was 25 m. A predictive model for dust removal time after tunnel blasting operations was developed, establishing the relationship between dust removal time and the three factors as T = 20.7Q−0.73S0.19L0.86. Subsequent on-site validation confirmed the high accuracy of the predictive model, demonstrating its efficacy for practical applications. This study contributes a novel integration of orthogonal experimental design and validated CFD modeling to predict ventilation dust removal time, offering a practical and theoretically grounded approach for tunnel ventilation optimization. Energy harvesting systems (EHSs) are widely used to power wireless sensors. Piezoelectric harvesters have the advantage of producing an electric signal directly related to the exciting force and can thus be used to power condition monitoring sensors in dynamically loaded structures such as bridges. The need for such monitoring is exemplified by the fact that the condition of close to 25% of public roadway bridges in, e.g., Germany is not satisfactory. Stack-based piezoelectric energy harvesting systems (pEHSs) installed near bridge bearings could provide information about the traffic and dynamic loads on the one hand and condition-dependent changes in the bridge characteristics on the other. This paper presents an approach to co-optimizing the design of the mechanical and electrical components using a nonlinear solver. Such an approach has not been described in the open literature to the best of the authors’ knowledge. The mechanical excitation is estimated through a finite element simulation, and the electric circuitry is modeled in Simulink to account for the nonlinear characteristics of rectifying diodes. We use real traffic data to create statistical randomized scenarios for the optimization and statistical variation. A main result of this work is that it reveals the strong dependence of the energy output on the interaction between bridge, harvester, and traffic details. A second result is that the methodology yields design criteria for the harvester such that the energy output is maximized. Through the case study of an actual middle-sized bridge in Germany, we demonstrate the feasibility of harvesting a time-averaged power of several milliwatts throughout the day. Comparing the total amount of harvested energy for 1000 randomized traffic scenarios, we demonstrate the suitability of pEHS to power wireless sensor nodes. In addition, we show the potential sensory usability for traffic observation (vehicle frequency, vehicle weight, axle load, etc.). Full article

Roadway deformation failure is often related to the presence of weak structural planes (WSPs) in the surrounding rock mass. Especially in coastal mining environments, WSP-induced deformation can create pathways that connect faults with seawater, accelerating groundwater seepage and inrush hazards. This study employs an optimized Finite–Discrete Element Method (Y-Mat) to simulate WSP-driven fracture evolution, introducing an elastoplastic failure criterion and enhanced contact force calculations. The results show that the farther the WSP is from the roadway, the lower its influence; its existence alters the shape of the plastic zone by lengthening the failure zone along the fault direction, while its angle changes the shape and location of the failure zone and deflects fracture directions, with the surrounding rock between the roadway and WSP suffering the most severe failure. The deformation failure of roadway surrounding rock is influenced by WSPs. Excavation unloading reduces the normal stress and shear strength in the weak structural plane of surrounding rock, resulting in slip and deformation. Additionally, WSP-induced fractures act as groundwater influx conduits, especially in fault-proximal roadways or where crack angles align with hydraulic gradients, so mitigation in water-rich mining environments should prioritize sealing these pathways. The results provide a theoretical basis for roadway excavation and support engineering under the influence of WSPs. Full article

This study examines the safety and cost-effectiveness of implementing shoulder rumble strips (SRS) and road lighting on Saudi Arabian freeways, providing insights into their roles in fostering sustainable transport systems. By leveraging the Highway Safety Manual (HSM) framework, this research develops localized Crash Modification Factors (CMFs) for these interventions, ensuring evidence-based and context-specific evaluations. Data were collected for two periods—pre-pandemic (2017–2019) and post-pandemic (2021–2022). For each period, we obtained traffic crash records from the Saudi Highway Patrol database, traffic volume data from the Ministry of Transport and Logistic Services’ automated count stations, and roadway characteristics and pavement-condition metrics from the National Road Safety Center. The findings reveal that SRS reduces fatal and injury run-off-road crashes by 52.7% (CMF = 0.473) with a benefit–cost ratio of 14.12, highlighting their high cost-effectiveness. Road lighting, focused on nighttime crash reduction, decreases such crashes by 24% (CMF = 0.760), with a benefit–cost ratio of 1.25, although the adoption of solar-powered lighting systems offers potential for greater sustainability gains and a higher benefit–cost ratio. These interventions align with global sustainability goals by enhancing road safety, reducing the socio-economic burden of crashes, and promoting the integration of green technologies. This study not only provides actionable insights for achieving KSA Vision 2030’s target of improved road safety but also demonstrates how engineering solutions can be harmonized with sustainability objectives to advance equitable, efficient, and environmentally responsible transportation systems. To tackle the inefficiencies in 3D mine tunnel modeling and the tedious task of drawing centerlines, this study introduces a faster method for generating centerlines using CAD secondary development. Starting with the tunnel centerline, the research then dives into techniques for creating detailed 3D tunnel models. The team first broke down the steps and logic behind tunnel modeling, designing a 3D tunnel framework and its data structure—complete with key geometric components like traverse points, junctions, nodes, and centerlines. By refining older centerline drawing techniques, they built a CAD-powered tool that slashes time and effort. The study also harnessed advanced algorithms, such as surface fitting and curve lofting, to swiftly model tricky tunnel sections like curves and crossings. This method fixes common problems like warped or incomplete surfaces in linked tunnel models, delivering precise and lifelike 3D scenes for VR-based mining safety drills and simulations. Full article

To reveal the meso-mechanical essence of deep rock mass failure and capture precursor information, this study focuses on soft rock failure mechanisms. Based on the discontinuous medium discrete element method (DEM), we employed digital image correlation (DIC) technology, acoustic emission (AE) monitoring, and particle flow code (PFC) numerical simulation to investigate the failure evolution characteristics and AE quantitative representation of soft rocks. Key findings include the following: Localized high-strain zones emerge on specimen surfaces before macroscopic crack visualization, with crack tip positions guiding both high-strain zones and crack propagation directions. Strong force chain evolution exhibits high consistency with the macroscopic stress response—as stress increases and damage progresses, force chains concentrate near macroscopic fracture surfaces, aligning with crack propagation directions, while numerous short force chains coalesce into longer chains. The spatial and temporal distribution characteristics of acoustic emissions were explored, and the damage types were quantitatively characterized, with ring-down counts demonstrating four distinct stages: sporadic, gradual increase, stepwise growth, and surge. Shear failures predominantly occurred along macroscopic fracture surfaces. At the same time, there is a phenomenon of acoustic emission silence in front of the stress peak in the surrounding rock of deep soft rock roadway, as a potential precursor indicator for engineering disaster early warning. These findings provide critical theoretical support for deep engineering disaster prediction. Full article

The modern road industry requires a more effective solution according to efficiency and minimizing environmental burden. This article discusses the use of recycled materials to modify bitumen binders within the concept of the circular economy. The main aim of this article was to create a new composite based on waste materials, including polymer waste and rubber crumb. The important element is the usage of locally available waste that has not been investigated previously as a material for asphalt modification. The prepared composition was preliminarily assessed according to chemical composition. Next, research dedicated to road application was conducted, including the following: determination of the resistance to hardening, aging under the influence of high temperature and air, as well as oxidation processes, assessment of penetration, and evaluation of the softening point. The conducted studies showed that the new composites with the addition of polymer waste and rubber crumb improve the thermal stability, elasticity, and resistance of bitumen to aging. Optimum concentrations of modifiers were determined that provide an increase in the performance characteristics of bitumen, including a decrease in the brittleness temperature and an increase in the softening temperature. The obtained results demonstrate the potential for the introduction of new composites based on recycled materials in road construction, contributing to increased environmental sustainability and economic efficiency. Addressing the stability control challenges of roadways with composite roofs in the No. 34 coal seam of Donghai Mine under high-strength mining conditions, this study employed integrated methodologies including laboratory experiments, numerical modeling, and field trials. It investigated the mechanical response characteristics of the composite roof and developed a synergistic control system, validated through industrial application. Key findings indicate significant differences in mechanical behavior and failure mechanisms between individual rock specimens and composite rock masses. A theoretical “elastic-plastic-fractured” zoning model for the composite roof was established based on the theory of surrounding rock deterioration, elucidating the mechanical mechanism where the cohesive strength of hard rock governs the load-bearing capacity of the outer shell, while the cohesive strength of soft rock controls plastic flow. The influence of in situ stress and support resistance on the evolution of the surrounding rock zone radii was quantitatively determined. The FLAC3D strain-softening model accurately simulated the post-peak behavior of the surrounding rock. Analysis demonstrated specific inherent patterns in the magnitude, ratio, and orientation of principal stresses within the composite roof under mining influence. A high differential stress zone (σ1/σ3 = 6–7) formed within 20 m of the working face, accompanied by a deflection of the maximum principal stress direction by 53, triggering the expansion of a butterfly-shaped plastic zone. Based on these insights, we proposed and implemented a synergistic control system integrating high-pressure grouting, pre-stressed cables, and energy-absorbing bolts. Field tests demonstrated significant improvements: roof-to-floor convergence reduced by 48.4%, rib-to-rib convergence decreased by 39.3%, microseismic events declined by 61%, and the self-stabilization period of the surrounding rock shortened by 11%. Consequently, this research establishes a holistic “theoretical modeling-evolution diagnosis-synergistic control” solution chain, providing a validated theoretical foundation and engineering paradigm for composite roof support design. To address the limitations of traditional hardened concrete road surfaces in coal mine tunnels, which are prone to damage and entail high maintenance costs, this study proposes using modular concrete blocks composed of fly ash and coal gangue as an alternative to conventional materials. These blocks offer advantages including ease of construction and rapid, straightforward maintenance, while also facilitating the reuse of substantial quantities of solid waste, thereby mitigating resource wastage and environmental pollution. Initially, the mineral composition of the raw materials was analyzed, confirming that although the physical and chemical properties of Liangshui Well coal gangue are slightly inferior to those of natural crushed stone, they still meet the criteria for use as concrete aggregate. For concrete blocks incorporating 20% fly ash, the steam curing process was optimized with a recommended static curing period of 16–24 h, a temperature ramp-up rate of 20 °C/h, and a constant temperature of 50 °C maintained for 24 h to ensure optimal performance. Orthogonal experimental analysis revealed that fly ash content exerted the greatest influence on the compressive strength of concrete, followed by the additional water content, whereas the aggregate particle size had a comparatively minor effect. The optimal mix proportion was identified as 20% fly ash content, a maximum aggregate size of 20 mm, and an additional water content of 70%. Performance testing indicated that the fabricated blocks exhibited a compressive strength of 32.1 MPa and a tensile strength of 2.93 MPa, with strong resistance to hydrolysis and sulfate attack, rendering them suitable for deployment in weakly alkaline underground environments. Considering the site-specific conditions of the Liangshuijing coal mine, ANSYS 2020 was employed to simulate and analyze the mechanical behavior of the blocks under varying loads, thicknesses, and dynamic conditions. The findings suggest that hexagonal coal gangue blocks with a side length of 20 cm and a thickness of 16 cm meet the structural requirements of most underground mine tunnels, offering a reference model for cost-effective paving and efficient roadway maintenance in coal mines. Traffic congestion poses a significant challenge to modern urban environments, impacting both driver satisfaction and road safety. This paper investigates the effectiveness of a smart traffic light system (STL), a solution developed under the Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) initiative by the Ministry of Works Malaysia, to address these issues in Malaysia. The system integrates a network of sensors, AI-enabled cameras, and Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) technology to gather real-time data on traffic volume and vehicle classification at congested intersections. This data is utilized to dynamically adjust traffic light timings, prioritizing traffic flow on heavily congested roads while maintaining safety standards. To evaluate the system’s performance, a comprehensive study was conducted at a selected intersection. Traffic patterns were automatically analyzed using camera systems, and the performance of the STL was compared to that of traditional traffic signal systems. The average travel time from the start to the end intersection was measured and compared. Preliminary findings indicate that the STL significantly reduces travel times and improves overall traffic flow at the intersection, with average travel time reductions ranging from 7.1% to 28.6%, depending on site-specific factors. While further research is necessary to quantify the full extent of the system’s impact, these initial results demonstrate the promising potential of STL technology to enhance urban mobility and more efficient and safer roadways by moving beyond traditional traffic signal functionalities. Under deep, high-intensity mining conditions, a high mineral pressure develops at the working face, which can easily cause floor heave deformation of the roadway. In this paper, with the geological conditions of Buertai coal mine as the background, through on-site monitoring and numerical simulation, the mechanism of strong dynamic pressure roadway floor heave is clarified and a cooperative control method for roadway floor heave deformation is proposed. The main conclusions are as follows: (1) The overall strength of the floor of this strong dynamic pressure roadway is low, which can easily cause roadway floor heave, and on-site multivariate monitoring of the mine pressure is carried out, which clarifies the evolution law of the mine pressure of the mining roadway and along-the-airway roadway. (2) Combined with FLAC3D numerical simulation software, we analyze the influence of coal seam depth and floor lithology on the stability of the roadway floor and find that both have a significant influence on the stability of the roadway. Under the condition of high-intensity mining, the floor will deteriorate gradually, forming a wide range of floor heave areas. (3) Based on the deformation and damage mechanism of the roadway floor, a synergistic control method of “roof cutting and pressure relief + floor anchor injection” is proposed and various technical parameters are designed. In this research work, the authors propose an approach for analyzing a traffic accident involving a motorcycle and a pedestrian. The study was conducted under the condition that there are objects in the accident area that limit the visibility of the participants. For this purpose, a three-dimensional simulation model was developed to determine the relative positions of the pedestrian and the motorcycle-driver system at discrete moments, examining the period of time from the moment the pedestrian steps onto the roadway to the moment of contact between the participants. A Study on Three-Dimensional Flexible Mesh Influence on the Stability of Reserved Tunnels in Cemented Backfill

Ordinary backfill has characteristics such as low compressive strength, low tensile strength, and easy bending, which cannot meet the stability requirements of reserved tunnels, but three-dimensional flexible mesh can be added to improve it. In this paper, mechanical characteristics and displacement were taken as the evaluation index, an optimal three-dimensional flexible mesh was studied by a laboratory experiment of small samples, then backfill with a reserved roadway was used to carry out a large-sample similarity simulation experiment, and finally, a numerical simulation was carried out. The research shows that the three-dimensional flexible mesh had a strengthening effect on the backfill, especially on the tensile strength and shear strength of the backfill. The strengths increased by 1.57~2.00 times and 2.00~2.56 times, respectively. After backfill is damaged by external forces, three-dimensional flexible mesh can also hinder the detachment of backfill fragments. The effect of the three-dimensional flexible mesh on the backfill under static pressure was calculated by using numerical simulation, and it was found that the three-dimensional flexible mesh played an effective support role for the roadway inside the backfill, effectively reducing the displacement of the roadway roof by 21.43% and the strain energy by 40%.
