Bump feeding is a nutritional management strategy in swine production that involves increasing feed allowance and/or dietary nutrient density during the final weeks of gestation, usually from day 90 to farrowing, to support rapid fetal growth and prepare sows for lactation. This strategy is widely applied to improve piglet birth weight, neonatal viability, and subsequent reproductive performance. This review synthesizes current evidence on the effects of increased maternal feed intake during late gestation on sow body condition and feeding-related behavioral responses, and farrowing outcomes. Available studies suggest that increasing feed allowance during late gestation can influence litter characteristics, piglet survival at birth, and sow energy reserves, as reflected by changes in backfat thickness (BFT) and body condition score (BCS). The nutritional composition of bump-feeding diets, including dietary energy and amino acid balance, is critically evaluated in relation to pregnancy maintenance, farrowing duration, and early lactation performance. In addition, the roles of parity and feeding behavior during late gestation are examined, with particular emphasis on their associations with sow activity patterns, restlessness around parturition, and farrowing efficiency. Despite these reported effects, findings across studies remain inconsistent, particularly regarding the balance between improved reproductive outcomes and the risk of excessive fat deposition in sows. This review highlights key knowledge gaps and underscores the need for optimized, parity-specific bump-feeding strategies that integrate nutritional management with feeding behavior to enhance farrowing performance, piglet survival, sow welfare, and economic sustainability in modern pig production. Background: Current guidelines for NSCLC follow-up lack specific recommendations on surveillance duration. This study aims to analyze survival and surveillance data in resected stage I NSCLC. Methods: We retrospectively reviewed 759 pathological stage I NSCLC (9thTNM ed.) patients with no history of lung cancer (LC) undergoing surgery from January 2003 to December 2018. Overall survival (OS), incidence of relapse (IR), and incidence of new primary LC (NP) were analyzed. Long-term effect of follow-up beyond 5 years was assessed by landmark analysis of OS, IR, and NP at 10 years, restricted to individuals alive without relapse or NP at 5 years (5-year event-free survivors, 5y-EFSs). Results: The rates of 10-year OS, 10-year IR, NP incidence, and 5y-EFSs were, respectively, 75%, 18%, 1.1%/year, and 59.1% (449 patients). Carcinoid IA/IB (0–10%) and adenocarcinoma IA/IB without lung nodules (LNs) (8–12%) had a similarly lower risk of relapse (p = 0.5088) compared to adenocarcinoma with LNs (p = 0.0191). Similarly, carcinoid (0–0.2%/year) and adenocarcinoma without LNs (0-0.3%/year) had the same lower incidence of NP (p = 0.8062) compared to patients with LNs (p < 0.0001). The group of 5y-EFSs had a conditional 10-year OS, IR, and NP incidence of 92%, 5%, and 0.8%/year. In 5y-EFSs, 10-year OS was better in carcinoid (100%) and adenocarcinoma (94%, p = 0.0009) patients; 10-year IR was lower in stage IA (4%) vs. IB (10%, p = 0.0444), and NP was lower in patients with no pre-surgery (0.5 vs. 1.5%/year, p = 0.0147) and no post-surgery LNs (0.6 vs. 1.1%/year, p = 0.0202). Conclusions: Based on our results, we propose a tailored surveillance strategy by de-escalating follow-up for low-risk patients while maintaining intensive monitoring for high-risk individuals. Unstable car-following behavior under truck-induced visual occlusion on mountainous two-lane roads significantly increases rear-end crash risk. However, compared with studies focusing on overtaking or curve risk prediction, the car-following-truck (CFT) risk and its influencing factors have received limited attention. Therefore, this study used unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) to collect high-resolution trajectory data of CFT scenarios on both straight and curved segments under truck-induced occlusion. First, the CFT risk was quantified based on an anticipated collision time (ACT) indicator, a two-dimensional surrogate safety measure that accounts for vehicle acceleration variations. Then, extreme value theory (EVT) was applied to calibrate alignment-specific risk thresholds. Finally, an XGBoost-based risk identification model was developed using vehicle dynamics-related features, and feature importance analysis combined with partial dependence interpretability was conducted to obtain key influencing factors. The results show that the calibrated ACT thresholds are approximately 3.838 s for straight segments and 4.385 s for curved segments, providing a reliable basis for risk classification. In addition, the XGBoost-based risk identification achieved accuracies of 90.63% and 95.87% for straight and curved segments, respectively. Further analysis indicates that CFT distance was the contributing factor. Moreover, risk increases markedly within a 10–20 m range on straight segments, while it rises rapidly once spacing falls below about 10 m on curved segments. Speed and acceleration differences exhibited stronger amplifying effects under short-spacing conditions. These findings provide a micro-behavioral basis for safety management and intelligent driving applications on mountainous roads with high truck mixing rates, supporting safer and more sustainable traffic operations. Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) remain the leading cause of mortality worldwide and constitute a substantial economic burden. Despite population aging, recent years have witnessed an increasing prevalence of conditions such as heart failure (HF), including among young adults. In this context, coronary artery disease (CAD) has also become an increasingly discussed issue. It has long been recognized that control of risk factors is crucial for prevention. Researchers stress the need to monitor these factors from the earliest stages of life, and detailed analyses indicate an influence of the prenatal period on the development of chronic diseases, including cardiovascular disorders. Transgenerational and intergenerational epigenetic mechanisms are also taken into account. This review aims to systematically evaluate the existing literature and summarize the mechanisms that may link these factors. We consider epigenetic, metabolic, immunological, and inflammatory influences. We describe examples of environmental exposures, such as air pollution, maternal diet, toxins, and infections, and analyze data derived from clinical studies. We discuss gaps in the literature and identify limitations, outlining directions for future research and emphasizing the need for CVD prevention initiated at the earliest stages of life. Full article

The subject of this research is the exploration of the potential of remote sensing and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) for basin-scale spatio-temporal monitoring of drought and its impacts in the Ukrina River Basin, Bosnia and Herzegovina (BH), during the last decade (2015–2024). The aim is to integrate meteorological, hydrological, agricultural, and socio-economic drought signals and to delineate areas of long-term drought exposure. Meteorological drought was evaluated using CHIRPS precipitation and the Standardized Precipitation Index (SPI) calculated at 1-, 3-, 6-, and 12- month accumulation scales using Gamma fitting and a fixed long term reference period; hydrological drought was examined using available water-level records complemented by the Standardized Water Level Index (SWLI) and supported by correspondence with standardized ERA5-Land runoff anomalies; agricultural drought was mapped using remote sensing indices—the Temperature Condition Index (TCI), Vegetation Condition Index (VCI), and Vegetation Health Index (VHI)—calculated from MODIS satellite data; and socio-economic effects were assessed using municipal crop-production statistics (2015–2019). The results indicate that drought conditions were most pronounced in 2015, 2017, 2021, and especially 2022, showing consistent agreement between precipitation deficits, hydrological responses, and vegetation stress, while 2016, 2018–2020, 2023, and 2024 were generally more favorable. As a key novelty, a persistent drought-prone zone was delineated by intersecting drought-affected areas across major episodes, providing a basin-scale identification of chronic drought hotspots for a river basin in BH. The persistent zone covers 40.02% of the basin and spans nine cities and municipalities, with >93% located in Prnjavor, Derventa, Stanari, and Teslić. Hotspots are concentrated mainly in lowlands below 400 m a.s.l., with a statistically significant concentration across lower elevation classes, indicating higher long-term exposure in the central and northern valley sectors, and land use overlay further highlights high relative exposure of productive land. Overall, the integrated remote sensing and GIS framework strengthens drought monitoring by providing spatially explicit and repeatable evidence to support targeted adaptation planning and drought-risk management. Background: Pulmonary infarction (PI) is the result of the occlusion of distal pulmonary arteries resulting in damage to downstream lung areas that become ischemic, hemorrhagic, or necrotic, and it is often a complication of an underlying condition such as pulmonary embolism (PE). Since in most of cases it is located peripherally, lung ultrasound (LUS) can be a good evaluation tool. The typical radiological features of PI are well-known; however, there are limited data on its sonographic characteristics and its evolution. Methods: The aim of this study is to evaluate, using LUS, a convenience sample of patients with acute PE with computed tomography (CT) consolidation findings consistent with PI. Patients’ clinical characteristics were collected and LUS findings at baseline and their short-term progression was assessed. LUS was performed within 72 h of PE diagnosis (T0) and repeated after one (T1) and four weeks (T2). Each procedure started with a focused examination of the areas of lesions based on CT findings, followed by an exploration of the other posterior and lateral lung fields. The convex probe was used for initial evaluation integrating LUS evaluation with the linear one was employed for smaller and more superficial lesions and when appropriate. Color Doppler mode was added to study vascularization. Results: From June to October 2023, 14 consecutive patients were enrolled at the Respiratory Unit of the University Hospital of Pisa. The main population characteristics included the absence of respiratory failure and prognostic high-risk PE (100%), the absence of significant comorbidities (79%), and the presence of typical symptoms, such as chest pain (57%) and dyspnea (50%). The average number of consolidations per patient was 1.4 ± 0.6. Follow-up LUS showed the disappearance of some consolidations and some morphological changes in the remaining lesions: the presence of hypoechoic consolidation with a central hyperechoic area (“bubbly consolidation”) was more typical at T1 while the presence of a small pleural effusion often persisted both at T1 and T2. A decrease in wedge/triangular-shaped consolidations was observed (82% at T0, 67% at T1, 24% at T2), as was an increase in elongated shapes, representing a residual pleural thickening over time (9% at T0, 13% at T1, 44% at T2). A reduction in size was also observed by comparing the mean diameter, long axis, and short axis measurements of each consolidation at the three different studied time points: the average of the short axes and the median of the mean diameters showed a statistically significant reduction after four weeks. Additionally, a correlation between lesion size and pleuritic pain was described, although it did not achieve statistical significance. Conclusions: Patients’ clinical characteristics and ultrasound features are consistent with previous studies studying PI at PE diagnosis. Most consolidations detected by LUS change over time regarding size and form, but a minority of them do not differ. LUS is a safe and non-invasive exam that could help to improve patients’ clinical approach in emergency rooms as well as medical and pulmonology settings, clinically contextualized for cases of chest pain and dyspnea. Juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA) is the most prevalent chronic rheumatologic condition in childhood, with an incidence that continues to rise worldwide. Despite substantial progress in therapeutic strategies over the past two decades, JIA remains a major health concern. Beyond joint inflammation and musculoskeletal impairment, accumulating evidence indicates that JIA is associated with metabolic disturbances and altered body composition, which may predispose affected children to an elevated cardiovascular risk in the long term. The objective of this review is to synthesize current knowledge on these metabolic and anthropometric alterations and to evaluate the role of non-invasive diagnostic methods in detecting early cardiovascular changes. A narrative review of the literature was conducted using PubMed and Scopus databases, focusing on studies assessing lipid metabolism, insulin resistance, adiposity, and cardiovascular markers in pediatric patients with JIA. Special attention was given to non-invasive diagnostic approaches, including bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA), dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA), skinfold thickness, transient elastography, carotid intima–media thickness (cIMT), as well as selected biochemical markers. Evidence suggests that children with JIA frequently present with dyslipidemia, increased insulin resistance, and abnormal body fat distribution compared with their healthy peers. Non-invasive assessment methods, particularly DXA and cIMT, have demonstrated sensitivity in detecting subclinical metabolic and vascular changes. These alterations resemble early features of metabolic syndrome and are thought to contribute to premature cardiovascular morbidity in this population. Incorporating non-invasive cardiovascular risk assessment into routine rheumatology practice may improve early detection of metabolic and vascular complications in JIA, support timely preventive interventions, and ultimately enhance long-term outcomes for affected children. Most available evidence is derived from cross-sectional studies, highlighting the need for longitudinal investigations to better define long-term cardiometabolic risk in JIA. Full article

Coastal port cities depend on global seafood flows, yet their food security is increasingly exposed to price volatility and supply disruptions. This study examines Busan citizens’ perceptions of seafood-related food security and seafood supply chain stability, and derives actionable municipal policy priorities for a trade-dependent port city. Anchored in the FAO four-dimensional framework—availability, access, utilization, and stability—we developed 20 seafood-related attributes and surveyed adult residents in Busan (n = 297). The measurement structure was assessed through reliability checks and exploratory factor analysis, and Importance–Performance Analysis (IPA) was used to map attribute-level priorities and identify the largest importance–performance gaps. Overall, respondents regard seafood food security as highly important but only moderately satisfactory. Availability and utilization perform relatively well, indicating perceived strengths in basic supply conditions and safe consumption, whereas access and stability show lower performance relative to importance, reflecting concerns about affordability, uneven physical access for vulnerable groups, price volatility, and exposure to external shocks. Notably, several stability-related attributes emerge as “Concentrate Here” priorities, highlighting the need for strengthened risk management, early warning communication, and resilience-oriented logistics planning at the city level. By integrating the FAO framework with attribute-level IPA, this study demonstrates how citizen perception data can translate macro food security debates into locally implementable priorities for building sustainable food systems in coastal cities. Agricultural production remains highly susceptible to water-related risks, such as drought and flooding. Although hydrologic forecasting systems, such as the National Water Model (NWM), have advanced considerably, their outputs are rarely used for real-time agricultural decision-making. This study developed the Agricultural Water Risk Indicator (AWRI), a framework that translates NWM streamflow forecasts into crop-specific risk assessment indicators. The AWRI framework has three key components: (1) the hydrological threat and exposure characterization based on NWM streamflow forecasts (B1); (2) crop sensitivity by growth stage and water needs (B2); and (3) adaptive capacity reflecting the presence of irrigation or drainage infrastructure (B3). The AWRI was evaluated across three NWM reach IDs covering five farm sites in the Black Belt region of Alabama, USA. The results show that the AWRI captured variations in hydrologic conditions, risk, and crop tolerance across the research sites within the one- to four-week forecast range. Crops in the reproductive stage were especially sensitive. Without resilience measures, up to 55% of the crops simulated at some sites had high-risk AWRI categories. Including irrigation or drainage decreased risk scores by one to two levels. The AWRI tool provides farmers and stakeholders with critical information to support proactive agricultural water management. Full article

Single-lane tunnels, characterized by narrow and high cross-sections with limited ventilation, present significantly higher fire hazards than conventional multi-lane tunnels. To investigate flame morphology and ceiling temperature evolution in such confined spaces, a comprehensive set of reduced-scale fire tests was conducted using a 1:10 scale tunnel model based on Froude similarity. The effects of the heat release rate (HRR), transverse fire location, and fire source height were systematically analyzed. The results indicate that the transverse fire location critically influences flame behavior: a centerline fire produces a stable, vertically symmetric flame, whereas a wall-attached fire exhibits a periodic oscillation of attachment, elongation, and detachment. The maximum ceiling temperature rise increases with both HRR and fire source height. Notably, compared to a centerline fire, a wall-attached fire can increase the maximum ceiling temperature rise by up to 39% due to sidewall confinement. Based on the experimental data, a predictive correlation for the maximum ceiling temperature rise under centerline fire conditions was established. Furthermore, a global prediction model incorporating a transverse position coefficient was proposed, which shows good agreement with the experimental results. Comparative analysis reveals that the temperature rise coefficient for the single-lane tunnel is approximately 13% higher than that of multi-lane tunnels. These findings provide a theoretical basis for fire risk assessment and safety design in single-lane tunnel infrastructure. Full article

Background: Cellulite is a highly prevalent condition with dermal and subcutaneous alterations poorly captured by visual grading systems. Ultrasound has emerged as a non-invasive imaging modality capable of objectively quantifying morphological features relevant to cellulite. This systematic review evaluated the evidence on ultrasound for the diagnosis, structural characterization, and treatment monitoring of cellulite, identifying methodological limitations and research gaps. Methods: This systematic review (PROSPERO:CRD420251185486) followed the PRISMA statement. Searches were conducted in PubMed, Scopus, and CENTRAL up to November 2025. Risk of bias was evaluated using ROBINS-I and the Newcastle–Ottawa Scale. Results: Nine studies involving 785 participants were included. Ultrasound frequencies ranged from 12 to 35 MHz, with some scanners operating across broader bandwidths. Despite variability in devices, acquisition protocols, and clinical comparators, all studies consistently demonstrated that ultrasound quantifies key structural characteristics of cellulite. Diagnostic investigations reported moderate-to-strong correlations (r ≈ 0.31–0.64) between ultrasound-derived measures and clinical severity scores. Interventional studies showed measurable reductions in dermal and subcutaneous thickness, decreased adipose protrusion height, and improved dermal echogenicity across multiple treatment modalities. Ultrasound frequently detected microstructural remodeling not readily visible on clinical examination. Conclusions: Ultrasound is a valuable imaging modality for objectively characterizing cellulite and monitoring treatment-induced tissue remodeling. Standardized acquisition protocols, validated analytic criteria, and larger controlled studies are needed to support integration into routine dermatologic and esthetic practice. The quantitative and reproducible nature of ultrasound-derived parameters also provides a suitable foundation for future integration with data-driven and artificial intelligence–based image analysis frameworks. Background/Objectives: Sensory deprivation, defined as a reduction or absence of external sensory input across one or more modalities, has long been investigated in extreme and experimental settings. More recently, its relevance has expanded to clinical contexts and environmental conditions. The present narrative review aims to synthesize current evidence on the neurobiological mechanisms, psychological effects, and clinical implications of sensory deprivation, with particular attention to its dual role as both a risk factor and, under controlled conditions, a potential therapeutic tool. Methods: A narrative literature search was conducted using PubMed, Scopus, and PsycINFO, covering studies published up to August 2025. Search terms included sensory deprivation, neuroplasticity, neurotransmitters, HPA axis, neuro-inflammation, circadian rhythms, psychopathology, extreme environments, and spaceflight. Preclinical and clinical studies examining biological, cognitive, and psychological consequences of reduced sensory stimulation were included. Data were synthesized thematically without quantitative meta-analysis. Results: Evidence indicates that sensory deprivation induces widespread neurobiological adaptations involving neurotransmitter systems (particularly dopaminergic pathways), dysregulation of the hypothalamic–pituitary–adrenal axis, neuroimmune activation, circadian rhythm disruption, and structural and functional brain changes, notably affecting the hippocampus. These alterations are associated with increased vulnerability to depression, anxiety, hallucinations, dissociative symptoms, and cognitive impairment. Duration, voluntariness, and individual differences (e.g., baseline vulnerability/resilience, trait anxiety, and prior psychiatric history) critically modulate outcomes. However, short-term and voluntary sensory restriction, such as Floatation-REST, may promote relaxation and emotional regulation under specific conditions. Conclusions: Sensory deprivation exerts complex, context-dependent effects on brain function and mental health. Duration, individual vulnerability, and voluntariness critically modulate outcomes. Understanding these mechanisms is increasingly relevant for clinical practice and for developing preventive strategies in extreme environments, including future long-duration space missions. When Every Minute Counts: Predicting Pre-Hospital Deliveries and Neonatal Risk in Emergency Medical Services Using Data-Driven Models

Background/Objectives: Pre-hospital delivery is an unpredictable event posing significant challenges for Emergency Medical Services (EMS) teams. Despite advances in perinatal care, emergency deliveries outside the hospital environment remain associated with increased maternal and neonatal risks. This study aimed to identify predictors of out-of-hospital delivery in EMS-attended labor cases and determinants of neonatal condition immediately after delivery. Methods: We conducted a retrospective analysis of 5097 EMS records of laboring women in Poland from August 2021 to January 2022, of which 2927 were included in the final study sample. Multivariate logistic regression models with multiple imputation for missing data were used to identify predictors of pre-hospital delivery and adverse neonatal condition (Apgar ≤ 7) in EMS-managed childbirths. Results: Pre-hospital delivery was strongly associated with second-stage labor (OR ≈ 535; p < 0.0001), ruptured membranes (OR ≈ 8.7; p < 0.0001), and fewer previous pregnancies (OR = 0.86; p = 0.018), and showed a trend with higher maternal heart rate (OR = 1.015; p = 0.083). Neonatal status classified as Apgar ≤ 7 was significantly associated with preterm birth (p < 0.0001), absence of fetal movements (OR ≈ 26.4; p = 0.025), and complications during pregnancy (p = 0.036). Complications during labor and lack of prenatal care were not significantly associated with increased risk of pre-hospital delivery in the model. Conclusions: Rupture of membranes, second-stage labor, and fewer previous pregnancies are significant predictors of pre-hospital delivery in EMS-managed cases. Absence of fetal movements and preterm gestation predict worse neonatal outcomes (Apgar ≤ 7). Early identification of these factors may enhance prehospital perinatal care and improve maternal and neonatal prognosis. Full article

Temporal Transferability of Satellite Rainfall Bias Correction Methods in a Data-Limited Tropical Basin

The Philippines experiences intense rainfall but has limited ground-based monitoring infrastructure for flood prediction. Satellite rainfall products provide broad coverage but contain systematic biases that reduce operational usefulness. This study evaluated whether three correction methods—Quantile Mapping (QM), Random Forest (RF), and Hybrid Ensemble—maintain accuracy when applied to future periods with substantially different rainfall characteristics. Using the Cagayan de Oro River Basin in Northern Mindanao as a case study, models were trained on 2019–2020 data and tested on an independent 2021 period exhibiting 120% higher mean rainfall and 33% increased rainy-day frequency. During training, Random Forest and Hybrid Ensemble substantially outperformed Quantile Mapping (R2 = 0.71 and 0.76 versus R2 = 0.25 for QM). However, when tested under realistic operational constraints using seasonally incomplete calibration data (January–April only), performance rankings reversed completely. Quantile Mapping maintained operational reliability (R2 = 0.53, RMSE = 5.23 mm), while Random Forest and Hybrid Ensemble failed dramatically (R2 dropping to 0.46 and 0.41, respectively). This demonstrates that training accuracy poorly predicts operational reliability under changing rainfall regimes. Quantile Mapping’s percentile-based correction naturally adapts when rainfall patterns shift without requiring recalibration, while machine learning methods learned magnitude-specific patterns that failed when conditions changed. For flood early warning in data-limited basins with equipment failures and variable rainfall, only Quantile Mapping proved operationally reliable. This has practical implications for disaster risk reduction across the Philippines and similar tropical regions where standard validation approaches may systematically mislead model selection by measuring calibration performance rather than operational transferability. In Italy, access to public dental care is limited, and the characteristics of patients seeking hospital-based services are poorly described. A single-centre retrospective cross-sectional study was conducted, including all individuals attending their first appointment at the public Dental Clinic of Bari University Hospital (Southern Italy) between 1 January and 31 December 2023. Demographic and clinical variables, comorbidities, reasons for consultation, and travel distance from residence were retrieved from electronic records and analysed. Among 1361 patients (49% male; mean age 47.8 ± 23.3 years), most attended for oral surgery (35%) or oral pathology (17%), while other specialties accounted for the remaining visits. Many patients presented with multiple systemic conditions, particularly cardiovascular and metabolic diseases; however, a sizeable proportion were young, apparently healthy individuals who did not meet national eligibility criteria for publicly funded dental care. The dental clinic served a wide catchment area, including referrals from other regions. Documentation on education and behavioural risk factors was frequently incomplete. Overall, these findings show that complex oral medicine and oral surgery needs are concentrated in a small number of hospital clinics and support the expansion of Italian public dental services and improvements in routine data collection.
