Rural roads are critical for connecting isolated communities to essential services such as education and health and administrative services, as well as production and market opportunities in low-income countries. More than 70% of movements of people and goods in Sub-Saharan Africa are heavily reliant on rural transport systems, using both motorised but mainly alternative means of transport. However, rural roads often suffer from poor construction due to the use of low-strength, in situ soils and limited financial resources, leading to premature failures and subsequent traffic disruptions with significant economic losses. This study investigates the use of rice husk ash (RHA), a waste byproduct from rice production, as a sustainable supplement to Ordinary Portland Cement (OPC) for soil stabilisation in order to increase durability and sustainability of rural roads, hence limit recurrent maintenance needs and associated transport costs and challenges. To conduct this study, soil samples collected from Mulungushi, Zambia, were treated with combinations of 6–10% OPC and 10–15% RHA by weight. Laboratory tests measured maximum dry density (MDD), optimum moisture content (OMC), and California Bearing Ratio (CBR) values; the main parameters assessed to ensure the quality of road construction soils. Results showed that while the MDD did not change significantly and varied between 1505 kg/m3 and 1519 kg/m3, the OMC increased hugely from 19.6% to as high as 26.2% after treatment with RHA. The CBR value improved significantly, with the 8% OPC + 10% RHA mixture achieving the highest resistance to deformation. These results suggest that RHA can enhance the durability and sustainability of rural roads and hence improve transport systems and subsequently improve socioeconomic factors in rural areas. This research demonstrates the potential of plant waste cellulose as a remarkable biomaterial for multilayer tablet formulation. Rice husks (RC) and orange peels (OC) were used as cellulose sources and characterized for a comparison with commercial cellulose. The FTIR characterization shows minimal differences in their chemical components, making them equivalent for compression into tablets containing ibuprofen. TGA measurements indicate that the RC is slightly better for multilayer formulations due to its favorable degradation profile. This is corroborated by an XRD analysis that reveals its higher crystalline fraction (~55%). The use of a heat press at combined high pressures and temperatures allows the layer-by-layer tablet formulation of ibuprofen, taken as a model drug. Additionally, this study compares the release profile of three types of tablets compressed with cellulose: mixed (MIX), two-layer (BL), and three-layer (TL). The MIX tablet shows a profile like that of conventional ibuprofen tablets. Although both BL and TL tablets significantly reduce their release percentage in the first hours, the TL ones have proven to be better in the long run. In fact, formulations made of extracted cellulose sandwiching ibuprofen display a zero-order release profile and prolonged release since the drug release amounts to ~70% after 120 h. This makes the TL formulations ideal for maintaining the therapeutic effect of the drug and improving patients’ wellbeing and compliance while reducing adverse effects. Full article

This study uses life cycle analysis (LCA) to evaluate the environmental impacts of co-firing bituminous coal with agricultural biomass waste, such as coconut and rice husks, emphasising circular economy principles. Seven experimental scenarios with different coal-to-biomass ratios were designed, ranging from pure coal to pure biomass. The results show that Scenario B (100% rice husk) achieved the best overall environmental performance, with the lowest global warming potential (300 kg CO2 equivalent), eutrophication potential (4.742 kg PO4 equivalent), and smog formation potential (0.012 kg C2H4 equivalent). Additionally, Scenario F (15% biomass mix) recorded the lowest acidification potential (57.39 kg SO2 eq), indicating that even partial substitution can yield significant environmental benefits. In contrast, Scenario C (100% coal) exhibited the highest acidification (164.08 kg SO2 eq) and eutrophication (8.82 kg PO4 eq) potential. Overall, the results demonstrate that co-firing biomass waste significantly reduces pollutant emissions compared to burning coal alone. This study highlights the effectiveness of biomass waste co-firing in mitigating environmental impacts, promoting resource recovery, and supporting a sustainable energy transition within a circular economy framework. The disposal of agro-industrial waste is a pressing environmental issue. At the same time, due to the high silica content in specific agricultural residues, their processed products can be utilised in various industrial sectors as substitutes for commercial materials. This study investigates the key technological, physico-mechanical, and viscoelastic properties of industrial elastomeric compounds based on synthetic styrene–butadiene rubber, intended for the tread of summer passenger car tyres, when replacing the commercially used highly reinforcing silica filler (SF), Extrasil 150VD brand (white carbon black), with a carbon–silica filler (CSF). The CSF is produced by carbonising a finely ground mixture of rice production waste (rice husks and stems) in a pyrolysis furnace at 550–600 °C without oxygen. It was found that replacing 20 wt.pts. of silica filler with CSF in industrial tread formulations improves processing parameters (Mooney viscosity increases by up to 5.3%, optimal vulcanisation time by up to 9.2%), resistance to plastic deformation (by up to 7.7%), and tackiness of the rubber compounds (by 31.3–34.4%). Viscoelastic properties also improved: the loss modulus and mechanical loss tangent decreased by up to 24.0% and 14.3%, respectively; the rebound elasticity increased by up to 6.3% and fatigue resistance by up to 2.7 thousand cycles; and the internal temperature of samples decreased by 7 °C. However, a decrease in tensile strength (by 10.7–27.0%) and an increase in wear rate (up to 43.3% before and up to 22.5% after thermal ageing) were observed. Nevertheless, the overall results of this study indicate that the CSF derived from the carbonisation of rice production waste—containing both silica and carbon components—can effectively be used as a partial replacement for the commercially utilised reinforcing silica filler in the production of tread rubber for summer passenger car tyres. This study presents a cost-effective, carbon-negative construction material for affordable housing, developed entirely from locally available agricultural wastes: rice husk ash, wood ash, and rice straw—materials often problematic to dispose of in many African regions. Rice husk ash provides high amorphous silica, acting as a strong pozzolanic agent. Wood ash contributes calcium oxide and alkalis to serve as a reactive binder, while rice straw functions as a lightweight organic filler, enhancing thermal insulation and indoor climate comfort. These materials undergo natural pozzolanic reactions with water, eliminating the need for Portland cement—a major global source of anthropogenic CO2 emissions (~900 kg CO2/ton cement). This process is inherently carbon-negative, not only avoiding emissions from cement production but also capturing atmospheric CO2 during lime carbonation in the hardening phase. Field trials in Kenya confirmed the composite’s sufficient structural strength for low-cost housing, with added benefits including termite resistance and suitability for unskilled laborers. In a collaboration between the University of Tartu and Kenyatta University, a semi-automatic mixing and casting system was developed, enabling fast, low-labor construction of full-scale houses. This innovation aligns with Kenya’s Big Four development agenda and supports sustainable rural development, post-disaster reconstruction, and climate mitigation through scalable, eco-friendly building solutions. Traditional stabilization techniques, such as lime and cement, widely used for their effectiveness, albeit with economic and environmental limitations, are leading to the search for sustainable approaches that utilize agricultural and industrial waste, such as rice husk ash, bagasse, and natural fibers. These have been shown to improve key geotechnical properties, even under saturated conditions, significantly. In particular, the combination of rice husk ash and recycled ceramics has shown notable results in Ecuadorian coastal soils. The article emphasizes the importance of selecting techniques that balance effectiveness, cost, and sustainability and identifies existing limitations, such as the lack of long-term data (ten years) and predictive models adapted to the Ecuadorian climate. From a bibliographic perspective, this article analyzes the challenges posed by expansive soils in the western coastal region of Ecuador, whose high plasticity and instability to moisture negatively affect civil works such as roads and buildings. The Ecuadorian clay contained 30% kaolinite and only 1.73% CaO, limiting its chemical reactivity compared to soils such as Saudi Arabia, which contained 34.7% montmorillonite and 9.31% CaO. Natural fibers such as jute, with 85% cellulose, improved the soil’s mechanical strength, increasing the UCS by up to 130%. Rice husk ash (97.69% SiO2) and sugarcane bagasse improved the CBR by 90%, highlighting their potential as sustainable stabilizers. All of this is contextualized within Ecuador’s geoenvironmental conditions, which are influenced by climatic phenomena such as El Niño and La Niña, as well as global warming. Finally, it is proposed to promote multidisciplinary research that fosters more efficient and environmentally responsible solutions for stabilizing expansive soils. Full article

The discharge of synthetic dyes in industrial wastewaters poses a serious environmental threat as they are difficult to degrade naturally and are harmful to aquatic organisms. This study aimed to evaluate the feasibility of using clean untreated rice husk (CRH) as a sustainable and low-cost adsorbent for the removal of methylene blue (MB) from synthetic wastewater. This approach effectively avoids the energy-intensive grinding process by directly using whole unprocessed rice husk, highlighting its potential as a sustainable and cost-effective alternative to activated carbon. A series of batch adsorption experiments were conducted to evaluate the effects of key operating parameters such as initial dye concentration, contact time, pH, ionic strength, and temperature on the adsorption performance. Adsorption kinetics, isotherm models, and thermodynamic analysis were applied to elucidate the adsorption mechanism and behavior. The results showed that the maximum adsorption capacity of CRH for MB was 5.72 mg/g. The adsorption capacity was stable and efficient between pH 4 and 10, and reached the highest value at pH 12. The presence of sodium ions (Na+) and calcium ions (Ca2+) inhibited the adsorption efficiency, with calcium ions having a more significant effect. Kinetic analysis confirmed that the adsorption process mainly followed a pseudo-second-order model, suggesting the involvement of a chemisorption mechanism; notably, in the presence of ions, the Elovich model provided better predictions of the data. Thermodynamic evaluation showed that the adsorption was endothermic (ΔH° > 0) and spontaneous (ΔG° < 0), accompanied by an increase in the disorder of the solid–liquid interface (ΔS° > 0). The calculated activation energy (Ea) was 17.42 kJ/mol, further supporting the involvement of chemisorption. The equilibrium adsorption data were well matched to the Langmuir model at high concentrations (monolayer adsorption), while they were accurately described by the Freundlich model at lower concentrations (surface heterogeneity). The dimensionless separation factor (RL) confirmed that the adsorption process was favorable at all initial MB concentrations. The results of this study provide insights into the application of agricultural waste in environmental remediation and highlight the potential of untreated whole rice husk as a sustainable and economically viable alternative to activated carbon, which can help promote resource recovery and pollution control. Goat milk has lower allergenicity and high commercial value but faces storage limitations, often leading to waste. Converting it into powder increases costs, making blending with non-dairy ingredients, such as rice flour, a viable alternative to reduce costs and potentially improve nutrition. In this this study, we developed five dairy compounds by replacing 10–49% of goat milk powder with rice flour. We evaluated their nutritional and physical properties compared to pure goat milk powder and rice flour. Analyses included water activity, total solids, protein, lipids, energy value, color, flowability, wettability, polyphenol content, mineral profile, and morphology. Higher rice flour content increased water activity and improved wettability but reduced flowability, classifying most compounds as reasonable to fair in flow, except for the 10% rice flour sample. All samples met Brazilian standards, which require ≥13 g/100 g of protein. The dairy compounds showed a yellow-greenish color, with significant color differences compared to goat milk powder, particularly at 49% rice flour. Goat milk powder had higher mineral contents (Ca, K, Mg, Na, P, Zn). Total polyphenol content was highest in the 10% rice flour compound, while individual polyphenols were undetectable. Overall, the formulation proved viable for cost reduction while maintaining nutritional quality. Full article

In the context of efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in the building sector, the reintegration of traditional earthen construction into modern architectural and renovation practices offers a sustainable alternative. To address the mechanical and water-resistance limitations of adobe bricks, the use of agricultural waste—such as rice husk—is increasingly being explored. This experimental study evaluates the effects of rice husk addition on the mechanical, hygrothermal, and acoustic properties of adobe bricks. Two soil types—one siliceous and one calcareous—were combined with 1, 2, and 3 wt% rice husk to produce bio-based earthen bricks. The influence of rice husk was found to depend strongly on the soils’ mineralogical and granulometric characteristics. The most significant improvements were in hygrothermal performance: at 3 wt%, thermal conductivity was reduced by up to 35% for calcareous soil and 20% for siliceous soil, indicating enhanced insulation. Specific heat capacity also increased with husk content, suggesting better thermal inertia. The moisture buffering capacity, already high in raw soils, is further improved due to increased surface porosity. Mechanically, rice husk incorporation had mixed effects: a modest increase in compressive strength was observed in siliceous soil at 1 wt%, while calcareous soil showed slight improvement at 3 wt%. Acoustic performance remained low across all samples, with minimal gains attributed to limited macro-porosity. These findings highlight the importance of soil composition in optimizing rice husk dosage and suggest promising potential for rice husk-stabilized adobe bricks, especially in thermally demanding environments. The amount of waste generated by society is constantly increasing. Consequently, there is a need to develop new and better methods of treating it. A significant part of municipal waste is biowaste, which can be treated as a source of valuable resources such as nutrients, organic matter, and energy. The present work aims to determine the properties of the tested household biowaste and the possibility of using it as feedstock in slow pyrolysis to obtain biochar. The slow pyrolysis process of the biowaste was carried out in an electrically heated Horizontal Tube Furnace (HTF) at temperatures of 400 °C, 500 °C, and 600 °C in a nitrogen atmosphere. The analysis showed that depending on the type and composition of the biowaste, its properties are different. All the biowaste tested has a high moisture content (between 63.51% and 81.53%), which means that the biowaste needs to be dried before the slow pyrolysis process. The characteristics of kitchen biowaste are similar to those of food waste studied by other researchers in different regions of the world. In addition, the properties of kitchen biowaste are similar to those of the typical biomasses used to produce biochar via slow pyrolysis, such as wood, almond shells, and rice husks. Both kinds of garden biowaste tested may have been contaminated (soil, rocks) during collection, which affected the high ash content of spring (17.75%) and autumn (43.83%) biowaste. This, in turn, affected all the properties of the garden biowaste, which differed significantly from both the literature data of other garden wastes and from the properties of typical biomass feedstocks used to produce biochar in slow pyrolysis. For all biowaste tested, it was shown that as the pyrolysis temperature increases, the yield of biochar decreases. The maximum mass yield of biochar for kitchen, spring garden, and autumn garden biowaste was 36.64%, 66.53%, and 66.99%, respectively. Comparing the characteristics of biowaste before slow pyrolysis, biochar obtained from kitchen biowaste had a high carbon content, fixed carbon, and a higher HHV. Climate change resulting from human development necessitates increased land use, food, and energy consumption, underscoring the need for sustainable development. Incorporating various feedstocks into value-added liquid fuels and bioproducts is essential for achieving sustainability. Most biomass consists of cell walls, which serve as a primary carbon source for bioenergy and biorefinery processes. This structure contains a cellulose core, where lignin and hemicelluloses are crosslinked and embedded in a pectin matrix, forming diverse polysaccharide architectures across different species and tissues. Nineteen agro-industrial waste products were analyzed for their potential use in a circular economy. The analysis included cell wall composition, saccharification, and calorific potential. Thermal capacity and degradation were similar among the evaluated wastes. The feedstocks of corn cob, corn straw, soybean husk, and industry paper residue exhibited a higher saccharification capacity despite having lower lignin and uronic acid contents, with cell walls comprising 30% glucose and 60% xylose. Therefore, corn, soybeans, industrial paper residue, and sugarcane are more promising for bioethanol production. Additionally, duckweed, barley, sorghum, wheat, rice, bean, and coffee residues could serve as feedstocks for other by-products in green chemistry, generating valuable products. The widespread use of conventional plastic in food packaging has raised serious environmental issues due to its persistence and poor biodegradability. With growing concerns over plastic pollution and its long-term ecological impact, researchers are increasingly turning to natural, renewable sources for sustainable alternatives. Agricultural waste, often discarded in large quantities, offers a valuable resource for producing biodegradable polymers. This review discusses the environmental burden caused by traditional plastics and explores how agricultural residues such as rice husks, corn cobs, and fruit peels can be converted into eco-friendly packaging materials. Various types of biopolymers sourced from agricultural waste, including cellulose, starch, plant and animal-based proteins, polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHA), and polylactic acid (PLA), are examined for their properties, benefits, and limitations in food packaging applications. Each material presents unique characteristics in terms of biodegradability, mechanical strength, and barrier performance. While significant progress has been made, several challenges remain, including cost-effective production, material performance, and compliance with food safety regulations. Looking ahead, innovations in material processing, waste management integration, and biopolymer formulation could pave the way for widespread adoption. This review aims to provide a comprehensive overview of current developments and future directions in the use of agricultural waste for sustainable packaging solutions, comparing their biodegradability and performance to conventional plastics. Enrichment of Rice Flour with Almond Bagasse Powder: The Impact on the Physicochemical and Functional Properties of Gluten-Free Bread

Almond bagasse, a by-product of almond milk production, is rich in fibre, protein, polyunsaturated fatty acids, and bioactive compounds. Its incorporation into food products provides a sustainable approach to reducing food waste while improving nutritional quality. This study explored the impact of enriching rice flour with almond bagasse powders—either hot air-dried (HAD60) or lyophilised (LYO)—at substitution levels of 5%, 10%, 15%, 20%, 25%, and 30% (w/w), to assess effects on gluten-free bread quality. The resulting flour blends were analysed for their physicochemical, techno-functional, rheological, and antioxidant properties. Gluten-free breads were then prepared using these blends and evaluated fresh and after seven days of refrigerated storage. The addition of almond bagasse powders reduced moisture and water absorption capacities, while also darkening the bread colour, particularly in HAD60, due to browning from thermal drying. The LYO powder led to softer bread by disrupting the starch structure more than HAD60. All breads hardened after storage due to starch retrogradation. The incorporation of almond bagasse powder reduced the pasting behaviour—particularly at substitution levels of ≥ 25%—as well as the viscoelastic moduli of the flour blends, due to fibre competing for water and thereby limiting starch gelatinisation. Antioxidant capacity was significantly enhanced in HAD60 breads, particularly in the crust and at higher substitution levels, due to Maillard reactions. Furthermore, antioxidant degradation over time was less pronounced in formulations with higher substitution levels, with HAD60 proving more stable than LYO. Overall, almond bagasse powder improves the antioxidant profile and shelf-life of gluten-free bread, highlighting its value as a functional and sustainable ingredient. Full article

The ongoing global population growth and the corresponding rise in energy demand have contributed to increased greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. The integration of alternative, locally sourced energy solutions such as biogas presents a promising strategy to partially offset conventional energy consumption. In this context, countries like Colombia—characterized by a high availability of organic waste such as palm oil mill effluent (POME), rice straw, and pig manure—have the potential to harness these residues for biogas production. This study integrates experimental assays of anaerobic co-digestion tests with the spatial analysis of substrate distribution through GIS tools, enabling the identification of optimal regions for biogas production. Methane yields reached 412 mL CH4/g VS, comparable or superior to those reported in similar studies. In addition to laboratory assays, Geographic Information System (GIS) tools were used to generate a weighted heatmap index based on feedstock availability (POME, rice straw, pig manure) across 40 municipalities in Colombia. This integrated approach supports decentralized renewable energy planning and helps identify optimal locations for biogas plant development. Full article

Starch, as a natural, low-cost, and vegan-friendly raw material, aligns well with the growing demand for sustainable, zero-waste, and waterless cosmetic products. Its biodegradability and natural origin allow for minimal environmental impact during production and disposal. Anhydrous lotion body bars, solid and water-free alternatives to traditional moisturizers, offer high concentrations of active ingredients that are more effective and have a longer shelf life. Their solid form enables packaging in paper-based containers, reducing plastic waste. To address formulation challenges such as excessive greasiness, poor absorption, or lack of structural stability, which are often associated with the high oil content of anhydrous body lotion bars, starch may serve as a promising natural additive. The aim of this study was to optimize the formulation of an innovative starch-based anhydrous lotion bar. For this purpose, physicochemical analyses of starches from various botanical sources (corn, rice, tapioca, waxy corn and potato) were performed, along with evaluations of the functional (including commercially acceptable form, hardness sufficient for application, product stability, reduced greasiness and stickiness) and mechanical properties of the resulting bars. Additionally, the rheological behavior was described using the De Kee model. The results indicate that a 2.5% starch addition, regardless of its botanical origin, provides the best balance between viscosity and ease of application. Moreover, starches with a low moisture content and high oil absorption capacity effectively reduce the greasy skin sensation. These findings demonstrate the potential of starch as a natural multifunctional additive in the development of stable, user-friendly anhydrous lotion body bars. Full article
