Reinforced concrete (RC) deep beams constructed with low-strength concrete are susceptible to sudden splitting failures in the strut region due to shear–compression stresses. To mitigate this vulnerability, various strengthening techniques, including steel plates, fiber-reinforced polymer sheets, and cementitious composites, have been explored to confine the strut area. This study investigates the structural performance of RC deep beams with low-strength concrete, strengthened externally using an Engineered Cementitious Composite (ECC) layer. To ensure effective confinement and uniform shear distribution, shear reinforcement was provided at equal intervals with configurations of zero, one, and two vertical shear reinforcements. Four-point bending tests revealed that the ECC layer significantly enhanced the shear capacity, increasing load-carrying capacity by 51.6%, 54.7%, and 46.7% for beams with zero, one, and two shear reinforcements, respectively. Failure analysis through non-linear finite element modeling corroborated experimental observations, confirming shear–compression failure characterized by damage in the concrete struts. The strut-and-tie method, modified to incorporate the tensile strength of ECC and shear reinforcement actual stress values taken from the FE analysis, was used to predict the shear capacity. The predicted values were within 10% of the experimental results, underscoring the reliability of the analytical approach. Overall, this study demonstrates the effectiveness of ECC in improving shear performance and mitigating strut failure in RC deep beams made with low-strength concrete. Full article

Glass fiber-reinforced polymer (GFRP) composites exhibit significant advantages over conventional structural webbing materials, including lightweight and corrosion resistance. This study investigates the localized compression performance of the proposed GFRP grid web–concrete composite beam through experimental and numerical analyses. Three specimen groups with variable shear-span ratios (λ = 1.43, 1.77) and local stiffener specimens were designed to assess their localized compressive behavior. Experimental results reveal that a 19.2% reduction in shear-span ratio enhances ultimate load capacity by 22.93% and improves stiffness by 66.85%, with additional performance gains of 77.53% in strength and 94.29% in stiffness achieved through local stiffener implementation. In addition, finite element (FE) analysis demonstrated a strong correlation with experimental results, showing less than 5% deviation in ultimate load predictions while accurately predicting stress distributions and failure modes. FE parametric analysis showed that increasing the grid thickness and decreasing the grid spacing within a reasonable range can considerably enhance the localized compression performance. The proposed analytical model, based on Winkler elastic foundation theory, predicts ultimate compression capacities within 10% of both the experimental and numerical results. However, the GFRP grid strength adjustment factor βg should be further refined through additional experiments and numerical analyses to improve reliability. Full article

Experimental tests on confined concrete specimens are essential to characterize the mechanisms activated under varying degrees of confinement. Such characterization is critical for understanding how full, partial, and non-uniform wrapping configurations influence strength and ductility enhancements. This study investigates the compressive behavior of concrete cylinders (160 mm × 320 mm) confined using full, partial, and non-uniform carbon fiber-reinforced polymers (CFRP) configurations. In the first phase, all wrapping schemes were applied with equivalent quantities of CFRP, enabling a direct performance comparison under material parity. The results indicate that non-uniform confinement (NUC) achieved approximately 15% higher axial strength than full confinement (FC2) using the same amount of CFRP. In the second phase, the NUC configuration was tested with 25% less CFRP material, yet the reduction in strength was limited to about 3%, demonstrating its superior efficiency. A new predictive model was developed to estimate peak axial stress and strain in CFRP-confined concrete cylinders. Compared to existing models, the proposed model demonstrated greater predictive accuracy (R2 = 0.98 for stress and 0.91 for strain) and reduced error metrics (RMSE and scatter index). ANOVA confirmed the statistical significance of the model’s predictions (p < 0.00001 for stress, p = 0.002 for strain). These findings highlight the performance advantages and material efficiency of non-uniform CFRP confinement and support the utility of the proposed model as a practical design tool for developing advanced confinement strategies in structural engineering. Using lightweight concrete (LWC) reduces the dead weight of the concrete structure by 25–30% compared to ordinary concrete. However, harmful and corrosive substances penetrate the lightweight concrete matrix due to its high permeability, resulting in higher maintenance costs and a reduced structure service life. Therefore, in harsh environments where conventional steel bars are susceptible to corrosion, fibre-reinforced polymer (FRP) bars should be used for reinforcement. However, there is a paucity of experimental studies regarding LWC structural elements reinforced with FRP bars. Shear strength is a critical limit state that typically determines the proper design of such elements, ensuring the required safety margin and an appropriate level of reliability. The research work was conducted to compare the experimentally determined shear strengths (Vexp) of 50 structural elements (beams, slabs) made of LWC/FRP with code predictions (Vcode) made according to eight codes used for design. Based on this comparison, the so-called conformity coefficient (Vexp/Vcode) was calculated and used to assess which provision documents are the best, considering the entire population of test results. The work demonstrated that the recent Eurocode best predicts the shear strength of LWC/FRP elements. Full article

This study aims to clarify the longitudinal flexural cracking characteristics in hogging moment regions and propose a practical calculation method for the cracking load and ultimate bearing capacity for a steel–GFRP strips–UHPC composite deck structure. The longitudinal flexural behavior of two steel–GFRP strips–UHPC composite beams in the hogging moment region is determined through a three-point loading test method. Their failure modes and mechanisms, crack propagation and distribution characteristics are analyzed considering the influence of the reinforcement ratio. The variation of the law of mid-span displacement, maximum crack width, strains and interface slip with load are discussed. Calculation methods for the cracking load and ultimate bearing capacity of steel–GFRP strips–UHPC composite beams are proposed. The results show that with the increase of the reinforcement ratio, the cracking load and ultimate bending capacity are improved by 11.1% and 6.0%, respectively. However, the development of cracks is inhibited, as the crack width, average crack spacing and strain of the reinforcement bars are reduced as the reinforcement ratio increases. The maximum crack width changes linearly with the load as it is less than 0.2 mm. The theoretical cracking load and ultimate bearing capacity of the composite beams considering the tensile contribution of UHPC achieve good agreement with the experimental values. Full article

In practical engineering, buildings are predominantly subjected to combined forces, and reinforced concrete (RC) beams serve as the primary load-bearing components of buildings. However, there is a paucity of research on the torsional effects of RC beams, particularly concerning the torsional failure mechanisms of large-size beams. To address this gap, this paper establishes a meso-scale numerical analysis model for RC beams reinforced with Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymer (CFRP) sheets under combined bending and torsion pressures. The research analyzes how the fiber ratio and torsion-bending ratio govern torsion-induced failure characteristics and size effects in CFRP-strengthened RC beams. The results indicate that an increase in the fiber ratio leads to accumulated damage distribution in the RC beam, a gradual decrease in CFRP sheet strain, and an increase in peak load and peak torque, albeit with diminishing amplitudes; as the torsion-bending ratio increases, crack distribution becomes more concentrated, the angle between cracks and the horizontal direction decreases, overall peak load decreases, peak torque increases, and CFRP sheet strain increases; and the nominal torsional capacity of CFRP-strengthened RC beams declines with increasing size, exhibiting a reduction of 24.1% to 35.6%, which distinctly demonstrates the torsional size effect under bending–torsion coupling conditions. A modified Torque Size Effect Law is formulated, characterizing in quantitative terms the dependence of the fiber ratio and the torsion-bending ratio. Full article

This current review examines modeling approaches for renovating reinforced concrete (RC) buildings for vertical forest (VF) application, taking into account structural retrofitting, energy systems, forestry integration, and occupant comfort. The study assesses research conducted with an advanced 3D finite element analysis and the use of retrofitting modeling techniques, including textile-reinforced mortar (TRM), fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP), seismic joints, and green concrete applications. The energy system modeling methods are reviewed, taking into account the complexity of incorporating vegetation and seasonal variations. During forestry integration, three main design parameters are identified, namely, root systems, trunks, and crowns, for their critical role in the structural stability and optimal environmental performance. The comfort models are identified evolving from static to adaptive models incorporating thermal, acoustic, visual and air quality parameters. The current review consists of more than one hundred studies indicating that the integration of natural systems to buildings requires a multidimensional and multidisciplinary approach with sophisticated systems. The findings of this review provide the basis for implementing VF models to RC buildings, while highlighting areas requiring further research and validation. Full article

The construction industry is exploring alternatives to traditional steel reinforcement in concrete due to steel’s corrosion vulnerability. Glass Fiber Reinforced Polymer (GFRP) and Basalt Fiber Reinforced Polymer (BFRP), known for their high tensile strength and corrosion resistance, are viable options. This study evaluates the flexural performance of concrete beams reinforced with GFRP, BFRP, and hybrid systems combining these materials with steel, following ACI 440.1R-15 guidelines. Twelve beams were assessed under three-point bending to compare their flexural strength, ductility, and failure modes against steel reinforcement. The results indicate that GFRP and BFRP beams achieve 8% and 12% higher ultimate load capacities but 38% and 58% lower deflections at failure than steel, respectively. Hybrid reinforcements enhance both load capacity and deflection performance (7% to 17% higher load with 11% to 58% lower deflection). However, GFRP and BFRP beams show reduced energy absorption, suggesting that hybrid systems could better support critical applications like seismic and impact-prone structures by improving ductility and load handling. In addition, BFRP beams predominantly failed due to debonding and concrete crushing, while GFRP beams failed due to bar rupture, reflecting key differences in their flexural failure mechanisms. Concrete structures increasingly face dynamic loading conditions, such as seismic events, vehicular traffic, and environmental vibrations, necessitating enhanced energy dissipation capabilities. The damping ratio, a critical parameter quantifying a material’s ability to dissipate vibrational energy, is typically low in conventional concrete, prompting extensive research into strategies for improvement. This review comprehensively explores the impact of advanced concrete types—such as Engineered Cementitious Composites (ECCs), Ultra-High-Performance Concrete (UHPC), High-Performance Concrete (HPC), and polymer concrete—on enhancing the damping behavior. Additionally, key mix design innovations, including fiber reinforcement, rubber powder incorporation, and aggregate modification, are evaluated for their roles in increasing energy dissipation. External factors, particularly curing conditions, are also discussed for their influence on the damping performance. The findings consolidate experimental and theoretical insights into how material composition, mix design, and external treatments interact to optimize dynamic resilience. To guide future research, this paper identifies critical gaps including the need for multi-scale numerical simulation frameworks, standardized damping test protocols, and long-term performance evaluation under realistic service conditions. Advancing work in material innovation, optimized mix design, and controlled curing environments will be essential for developing next-generation concretes with superior vibration control, durability, and sustainability. These insights provide a strategic foundation for applications in seismic-prone and vibration-sensitive infrastructure. Full article

Organic polymer introduction effectively enhances the toughness, bond strength, and durability of ordinary cement-based materials, and is often used for concrete repair and reinforcement. However, the entrained air effect simultaneously induced by polymer and the inhibitory action on cement hydration kinetics often lead to degradation in mechanical performances of polymer-modified cement-based composite (PMC). Nanomaterials provide unique advantages in enhancing the properties of PMC due to their characteristic ultrahigh specific surface area, quantum effects, and interface modulation capabilities. This review systematically examines recent advances in nano-reinforced PMC (NPMC), elucidating their synergistic optimization mechanisms. The synergistic effects of nanomaterials—nano-nucleation, pore-filling, and templating mechanisms—refine the microstructure, significantly enhancing the mechanical strength, impermeability, and erosion resistance of NPMC. Furthermore, nanomaterials establish interpenetrating network structures (A composite structure composed of polymer networks and other materials interwoven with each other) with polymer cured film (The film formed after the polymer loses water), enhancing load-transfer efficiency through physical and chemical action while optimizing dispersion and compatibility of nanomaterials and polymers. By systematically analyzing the synergy among nanomaterials, polymer, and cement matrix, this work provides valuable insights for advancing high-performance repair materials. Full article

The use of short cylinders of recycled aggregate concrete (RAC) reinforced with basalt fiber-reinforced polymer (BFRP) circumferential strips and polyvinyl chloride (PVC) tubes has been proven effective in previous studies. However, BFRP circumferential strips are cumbersome to install and do not ensure the integrity of the BFRP strips. Therefore, this study investigates axial compression experiments on RAC short cylinders reinforced with BFRP spiral strips and PVC tubes. A combination of experimental studies, finite element simulations, and theoretical analyses revealed that the winding angle and spacing of BFRP strips significantly affect the load-bearing capacity and ductility of the restrained specimens. Additionally, an improved strength model was developed based on an existing model. When evaluated using both computational and experimental results, the equations generated in this study showed an average error of less than 10%. The findings indicate that the composite structure provides effective reinforcement and offers valuable reference information for practical applications. Full article

Continuously Formed Fiber-Reinforced Thermoplastic Composite Rebar for Concrete Reinforcement

Despite the strength and ductility of steel reinforcing bars, their susceptibility to corrosion can limit the long-term durability of reinforced concrete structures. Fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) reinforcing bars made with a thermosetting matrix offer corrosion resistance but cannot be field-bent, which limits flexibility during construction. FRP reinforcing bars made with fiber-reinforced thermoplastic polymers (FRTP) address this limitation; however, their high processing viscosity presents manufacturing challenges. In this study, the Continuous Forming Machine, a novel pultrusion device that uses pre-consolidated fiber-reinforced thermoplastic tapes as feedstock, is described and used to fabricate 12.7 mm nominal diameter thermoplastic composite rebars. Simple bend tests on FRTP rebar that rely on basic equipment are performed to verify its ability to be field-formed. The manual bending technique demonstrated here is practical and straightforward, although it does result in some fiber misalignment. Subsequently, surface deformations are introduced to the rebar to promote mechanical bonding with concrete, and tensile tests of the bars are conducted to determine their mechanical properties. Finally, flexural tests of simply-supported, 6 m long beams reinforced with FRTP rebar are performed to assess their strength and stiffness as well as the practicality of using FRTP rebar. The beam tests demonstrated the prototype FRTP rebar’s potential for reinforcing concrete beams, and the beam load–deformation response and capacity agree well with predictions developed using conventional structural analysis principles. Overall, the results of the research reported indicate that thermoplastic rebars manufactured via the Continuous Forming Machine are a promising alternative to both steel and conventional thermoset composite rebar. However, both the beam and tension test results indicate that improvements in material properties, especially elastic modulus, are necessary to meet the requirements of current FRP rebar specifications. However, GFRP bars also suffer from a few limitations. One of the main issues that affects the performance of GFRP reinforcing bars is their bond with concrete, which may differ from the bond between traditional steel bars and concrete. However, despite the wide attention of researchers, there has not been a critical review of the recent research progress on bond behavior between GFRP bars and concrete. The objective of this paper is to provide an overview of the current state of research on bond in GFRP-reinforced concrete in an attempt to systematize the existing scientific knowledge. The study summarizes experimental investigations that directly measure bond strength and investigates the different factors that influence it. Additionally, an overview of the analytical and empirical models used to simulate bond behavior is then presented. The findings indicate the dependence of the bond on several factors that include bar diameter, bar surface, concrete strength, and embedment length. Additionally, it was concluded that both traditional and more recent bond models do not explicitly account for the effect of different factors, which highlights the need for improved bond models that do not require calibration with experimental tests. Fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) bars have great potential to replace steel bars in the design of reinforced concrete (RC) beams since they have numerous advantages such as high tensile strength and good corrosion resistance. Therefore, many studies including experiments and numerical simulations have focused on the behavior of FRP RC beams. In this paper, a comprehensive overview of previous studies is conducted to provide a thorough understanding about the behavior, the design, and the limitations of FRP RC beams. Particularly, experimental studies on FRP RC beams are collected and reviewed. In addition, the numerical analysis of FRP beams including the finite element (FE) analysis, the discrete element (DE) analysis, and artificial intelligence/machine learning (AI/ML) is summarized. Moreover, the international standards for the design of FRP RC beams are presented and evaluated. Through the review of previous studies, 93 tested specimens are collected. They can be a great source of reference for other studies. In addition, it has been found that the studies on the continuous beams and deep beams reinforced with FRP bars are still limited. In addition, more studies using DE analysis and AI/ML to analyze the response of FRP RC beams under loading conditions should be conducted. Full article

Ultimate Capacity of a GFRP-Reinforced Concrete Bridge Barrier–Deck Anchorage Subjected to Transverse Loading

This paper outlines a structural qualification process to assess the use of newly developed high-modulus (HM) glass fiber-reinforced polymer (GFRP) bars with headed ends in the joint between concrete bridge barriers and decks. The main goals of the study are to evaluate the structural performance of GFRP-reinforced TL-5 barrier–deck systems under transverse loading and to determine the pullout capacity of GFRP anchorage systems for both new construction and retrofit applications. The research is divided into two phases. In the first phase, six full-scale Test-Level 5 (TL-5) barrier wall–deck specimens, divided into three systems, were constructed and tested up to failure. The first system used headed-end GFRP bars to connect the barrier wall to a non-deformable thick deck slab. The second system was similar to the first but had a deck slab overhang for improved anchorage. The third system utilized postinstalled GFRP bars in a non-deformable thick deck slab, bonded with a commercial epoxy adhesive as a solution for deteriorated barrier replacement. The second phase involves an experimental program to evaluate the pullout strength of the GFRP bar anchorage in normal-strength concrete. The experimental results from the tested specimens were then compared to the factored applied moments in existing literature based on traffic loads in the Canadian Highway Bridge Design Code. Experimental results confirmed that GFRP-reinforced TL-5 barrier–deck systems exceeded factored design moments, with capacity-to-demand ratios above 1.38 (above 1.17 with the inclusion of an environmental reduction factor of 0.85). A 195 mm embedment length proved sufficient for both pre- and postinstalled bars. Headed-end GFRP bars improved pullout strength compared to straight-end bars, especially when bonded. Failure modes occurred at high loads, demonstrating structural integrity. Postinstalled bars bonded with epoxy performed comparably to preinstalled bars. A design equation for the barrier resistance due to a diagonal concrete crack at the barrier–deck corner was developed and validated using experimental findings. This equation offers a conservative and safe design approach for evaluating barrier–deck anchorage. Full article
