Upper Silesia, historically shaped by hard-coal mining and coal-based energy production, is undergoing a critical phase of just transition under the European Union’s 2050 climate-neutrality objective. This study examines the legal, institutional, and spatial conditions shaping this process and assesses declared social acceptance in seven mining subregions of the Silesian Voivodeship comprising 64 municipalities. The research combines structured desk research on European Union, national, and regional policy and legal instruments with a CATI survey of electricity consumers in the transformation area (N = 602). Particular attention is given to regulatory barriers affecting the revitalization and redevelopment of post-mining and post-industrial land. The document analysis reveals fragmented institutional responsibilities, weak coordination between sectoral strategies, and insufficient integration of mine-closure, revitalization, and spatial-planning regulations. The survey findings indicate that public support for the energy transition is conditional rather than unconditional. Respondents generally acknowledge the need for change; however, they expect the principal financial burden to be borne by the state budget and energy companies, while direct household financing receives only marginal support. The results also show that the survey measured self-reported familiarity with the term “energy transition” rather than objectively tested knowledge. The study contributes an integrated analytical framework linking governance, legal-regulatory constraints, post-mining land regeneration, and declared social acceptance in a coal region undergoing structural transformation. Amid intensifying global geopolitical conflicts and increasingly frequent market fluctuations, enhancing the resilience of agricultural sustainable development has become a core issue for ensuring food security and promoting rural revitalization. Digital infrastructure offers a crucial pathway for addressing the pain points in agricultural development and improving resilience levels. Using panel data from 30 Chinese provinces over the period 2013–2024, this paper employs the entropy method to measure agricultural sustainable development resilience and the level of digital infrastructure development. It empirically examines the empowering effect and mechanism of digital infrastructure on agricultural sustainable development resilience through FE two-way models, mediation models, and other econometric approaches. The findings are as follows: (1) digital infrastructure can enhance agricultural sustainable development resilience in the long term; (2) digital inclusive finance plays a significant partial mediating role, and this empowering effect exhibits a double-threshold characteristic; (3) marketization exerts a positive moderating effect; (4) the empowering effect is more pronounced in the central region. Accordingly, this paper proposes policy recommendations including optimizing the regional layout of digital infrastructure, implementing threshold-based differentiated policies for digital inclusive finance, and improving market-oriented supporting mechanisms, thereby providing practical support for international academic research on enhancing agricultural sustainable development resilience. Promoting green, sustainable, and coordinated development in the agricultural and rural sector is crucial for achieving high-quality development in China. By clarifying the internal linkages between the two stages, this study considers the agricultural and rural sector as an overall network system consisting of agricultural ecology and the rural economy with shared resources. In this framework, we propose efficiency measurements and global Luenberger productivity indices (GLPIs) for estimating the efficiency and productivity of the overall system and subsystems. Furthermore, we conduct a full decomposition of the proposed GLPI to identify the drivers of performance changes in the agro-ecological and rural economic system. The proposed methods are empirically applied to assess the efficiency and productivity of the agricultural and rural sector across 30 provinces in China. It is evident that the efficiencies of the overall system and the agro-ecological subsystem generally exhibit clear improvements after rural revitalization, whereas the efficiency of the rural economy remains relatively stable. Additionally, the GLPIs of the overall system and both subsystems of most provinces turn out to be positive after rural revitalization, which is mainly due to the positive best-practice gap (BPC) components. Lastly, whether we examine efficiency or GLPIs, regional heterogeneity is still evident. Full article

Indigenous languages in Southern Thailand are increasingly affected by modernization, digital communication, and language contact, yet the relationship between kinship terminology, social organization, and linguistic sustainability among Indigenous Austroasiatic-speaking communities remains insufficiently explored. This study addresses three research questions: (1) how Tan’ean and Jaahaai kinship systems differ in their semantic structures and classificatory patterns; (2) how kinship terms reflect cultural worldviews, social organization, and relational values of the Manni and Mueng’ra communities; and (3) what challenges influence the transmission and sustainability of kinship-related linguistic knowledge. This study aims to comparatively analyze consanguineal and affinal kinship terminology in the Tan’ean language of the Manni ethnic group and the Jaahaai language of the Mueng’ra ethnic group, focusing on how kinship systems encode cultural worldviews, social relations, and adaptive strategies under contemporary change. Guided by Componential Analysis and Ethnolinguistic Vitality Theory, this study employed a qualitative ethnolinguistic approach. Data were collected through genealogical elicitation, in-depth interviews, and participant observation with 40 key informants from Trang, Phatthalung, Satun, Songkhla, Yala, and Narathiwat provinces. The data were analyzed through semantic feature identification and comparative interpretation of kinship structures. The findings demonstrate that, despite shared Austroasiatic heritage, Tan’ean and Jaahaai exhibit distinct kinship systems reflecting different cultural logics. In response to the first research question, the findings reveal that the Manni system resembles the Hawaiian type, emphasizing egalitarian relations, generational categories, and inclusive incorporation of affinal relatives, whereas the Mueng’ra system shows Crow–Omaha characteristics, including generational skewing, gender-specific markers, hierarchical classification, and stronger influence from dominant regional languages. Regarding the second research question, the findings demonstrate that kinship terminology functions as a cultural mechanism for organizing social relationships, identity, and intergenerational obligations, reflecting different models of Indigenous social organization. For the third research question, the study identifies language contact, changing social conditions, and reduced intergenerational transmission as challenges affecting the continuity of Indigenous kinship knowledge. Therefore, the study recommends community-based orthographies, participatory digital learning platforms, and policies supporting Indigenous linguistic rights to strengthen language revitalization, cultural continuity, and Indigenous communities’ capacity to adapt to social transformation. The paper analyzes the evolution and strategy development for sustainable community-based ecotourism (CBET) in the commune of Hoa Bac in Central Vietnam. It is based on a pilot project carried out from 2019 to 2025 within the scope of a larger research project funded by the German Federal Ministry of Research, Technology and Space (BMFTR) as part of the research line ‘Sustainable Urban Regions’. As a key component of the overall research approach, the goal of this pilot project along the Cu De River valley in the vicinity of the city of Da Nang has been a culturally adapted and ecologically sensitive tourism model that leads to income and socio-economic improvement, environmental protection and a decentralized low-impact infrastructure. The results of six years of qualitative longitudinal participatory research based on community workshops, interviews and surveys, direct observations as well as participatory field activities show how transformations in natural, cultural, human, social, financial and built capitals have shaped the transition from resource-dependent livelihoods to a diversified ecotourism economy. By mobilizing and empowering the local community, partly belonging to the Co Tu ethnic minority, sustainable development emerged not from isolated interventions but from a structured process of interlinked development strategies including cultural revitalization, environmental preservation, locally adapted agroforestry, skills and capacity development, cooperative governance, decentralized infrastructure, and income diversification. The study demonstrates that stakeholder and community empowerment, appropriately designed governance models (in this case the establishment of a tourism cooperative), targeted capacity development and knowledge transfer can strengthen the resilience and long-term sustainability of ecologically sound and culturally adaptive community-based tourism initiatives. Overall, the lessons learned from the research in Hoa Bac contribute to designing and implementing a holistic approach to CBET in rural settings. Full article

Understanding the spatiotemporal evolution of rural settlements in ethnic minority regions is essential for coordinated rural development, cultural landscape conservation, and rural revitalization. Taking Fuxin Mongolian Autonomous County in Northeast China as a case study, this study examined rural settlement patterns and their driving mechanisms from 2000 to 2024 using GIS-based spatial analysis, landscape pattern metrics, and the optimal parameter-based geographical detector (OPGD) model. A multidimensional indicator system was constructed from four dimensions: natural environment, production-resource environment, ethnic–cultural environment, and socioeconomic environment. The results show that rural settlements remained significantly clustered, although clustering gradually weakened, with average nearest-neighbor ratios increasing from 0.7729 in 2000 to 0.8370 in 2024. High agglomeration was mainly concentrated in the southern and southeastern areas, whereas low agglomeration occurred in the western and northwestern areas. Annual average temperature had the strongest explanatory power (q = 0.2492), followed by road network density (q = 0.1786) and elevation (q = 0.1716), indicating that thermal conditions, transportation accessibility, and topographic constraints were dominant drivers. All two-factor interactions showed enhancement effects, suggesting a coupled rather than single-factor mechanism. Ethnic–cultural variables had relatively lower q-values but remain important for interpreting cultural continuity, heritage conservation value, and differentiated rural development. Full article

The sustainable regeneration of industrial heritage in cold regions is constrained by severe winter climates, pronounced seasonal shifts in behavior, and declining spatial vitality. However, existing studies have not sufficiently explained how cold-climate conditions reshape catalyst effects and regeneration performance in industrial heritage districts. This study proposes a digital shadow-enhanced and digital twin-enabled analytical framework for the sustainable regeneration of cold-region industrial heritage. Using the Youfang Street industrial heritage district in Harbin, China, as an exploratory case, the framework integrates multi-source data to construct a dynamic assessment system linking climatic constraints, spatial structure, and human activity patterns. The climate correction coefficient is further operationalized through normalized climatic variables, including air temperature, wind speed, snow-cover condition, and thermal-comfort indicators. The results indicate that winter conditions substantially weaken traditional catalyst mechanisms by reducing outdoor interaction, disrupting movement continuity, and increasing dependence on indoor transitional spaces. Simulation results further demonstrate that climate-responsive interventions, including enhanced indoor connectivity, mixed-use functional integration, and seasonal activity optimization, can improve regeneration performance and spatial resilience. The framework is presented as an exploratory single-case analytical model that requires further multi-city and multi-year validation. By combining digital shadow-supported simulation with sustainable urban regeneration theory, this study provides a transferable analytical framework and practical decision-support tool for industrial heritage revitalization in cold-region cities. With the intensifying global climate change and the full implementation of China’s “dual-carbon” strategy, the green and low-carbon transition in rural areas has become a core issue in urban and rural construction. As China’s most economically developed and highly urbanized region, the Yangtze River Delta (YRD) holds typical demonstrative significance in the research and practice of green and low-carbon rural construction. This study retrieves 4166 core documents from the China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI), Web of Science (WoS), and Scopus published between 1997 and 2025 to perform multi-database bibliometric analysis and knowledge mapping analysis. CiteSpace and VOSviewer are employed to conduct a comparative analysis of domestic and international literature and to delineate the knowledge evolutionary trends, core research hotspots, and research trajectories in this field. The findings reveal that the research on green and low-carbon rural construction in the YRD has experienced three stages. The first stage involves the introduction of foundational low-carbon concepts, the second stage centers around green transition and policy response, and the third stage is driven by the national rural revitalization and “dual-carbon” strategies. Moreover, five principal research directions have been determined, including spatial planning based on “low-carbon control units”, excavation of green wisdom from traditional villages, discussion of passive green strategies, retrofitting of existing rural residences and integration of low-carbon technologies, and precision rural construction based on industry–space synergy. Consequently, by constructing a dual-thread evolutionary framework integrating the natural ecosystem with the social system, this study systematically extracts the theoretical contributions, paradigm characteristics, and transferable empirical models from the research on green and low-carbon rural construction in the YRD, and proposes a future agenda to facilitate the shift in research paradigm from “problem solving” to “forward planning”. Ultimately, this study aims to offer a demonstrative “YRD solution” for the sustainable development of rural areas in China and beyond. Full article

The study investigates whether cultivated land abandonment (CLA) reflects structural transformation or an intensifying crisis. CLA is defined as land that has remained uncultivated for a minimum of two consecutive years, with the exclusion of land that is subject to deliberate programs such as the “Grain-for-Green” initiative. Utilizing the China Land Cover Dataset and a moving-window approach, we conducted a comprehensive analysis of spatiotemporal patterns across 2847 Chinese counties from 1992 to 2022. The research employed OLS, Tobit, high-dimensional fixed effects and instrumental variable regressions. The findings of the present study indicate an annual average abandonment rate of 2.3995%, with 12.3649% of cropland abandoned at least once and 9.2028% reclaimed, suggesting a fragile equilibrium. The Huang-Huai-Hai region and Northeast China’s plains emerged as low-abandonment clusters. Cropland fragmentation was found to trigger abandonment, while a higher ecological land ratio significantly exacerbates CLA. Rural labor migration and urbanization drive cumulative abandonment, worsened by the COVID-19 pandemic. Effective governance requires context-specific interventions that address key constraints and integrate land reuse into sustainable rural development frameworks. The research methods and theoretical mechanisms presented offer a reference for balancing food security, rural revitalization, and ecological sustainability worldwide. Full article

Dwellings built from rammed earth in historical contexts represent not only a heritage to be preserved but also buildings with a long service life that are still in use by the local population. Changes in urban dynamics and the revitalization of historic downtown areas have led to an increase in renovations of these buildings. However, in many cases, these projects are carried out using materials and techniques that are structurally incompatible and detrimental to sustainability. The aim of this study is to examine earthen residential architecture in the historical context of the Region of Northwest Murcia (Spain), the resources used in their construction, their building systems and their current condition. To this end, an analysis is proposed based on historical documentation, including an assessment of the costs and energy required for their construction, a visual inspection of the current condition of these buildings, and a study of the relevant building regulations. The study of their cladding, eaves, floor structures and partitions in their current state allows for an assessment of the extent of transformation they have undergone and their state of conservation, whilst the study of the regulations provides insight into recent interventions on these buildings. The results point to rammed earth as a technique that, in historic dwellings of various kinds, combined low economic and energy costs with acceptable durability, allowing them to remain in use several centuries later, albeit under the recent threat of interventions using incompatible materials that are shortening their lifespan. The intensification of agriculture and large-scale rural development policies present major challenges to the sustainability of agroecosystems worldwide. In China, the ‘Rural Revitalization Strategy’ has reshaped rural landscapes, yet its net impact on the interplay between agricultural production, ecosystem health, and human well-being remains poorly quantified at a national scale. This study investigates the spatiotemporal dynamics of Rural Ecological Livability (REL)—an integrated measure of agroecosystem health and quality of life—and identifies its key agro-ecological and socioeconomic drivers across 31 Chinese provinces from 2005 to 2020. We employed an innovative evaluation framework and a nested-weight spatial Durbin model to analyze these complex interactions. Our findings reveal a significant, yet spatially uneven, improvement in REL, with a persistent gradient between developed coastal regions and inland agricultural provinces. Forest coverage and moderate climatic conditions were key positive local drivers of REL. Crucially, our model uncovers significant negative spatial spillovers, demonstrating that intensified agricultural mechanization in one province can degrade the ecological livability of neighboring agroecosystems, likely through increased market competition and resource pressure. These results reveal a critical tension between local agricultural modernization and regional environmental sustainability. They underscore the necessity for agri-environmental policies that transcend administrative boundaries and manage landscape-level spillovers to achieve truly sustainable agroecosystem management. Linear tourism corridors can stimulate regional economic revitalization, but they may also intensify land conversion, fragment habitats, and challenge the long-term sustainability of ecologically sensitive landscapes. Resolving this tension requires a transition from qualitative zoning to data-driven, threshold-informed spatial governance. This study develops a continuous analytical pipeline to support land-use governance along China National Highway 331 (G331). We integrated principal component analysis (PCA) with a Bayesian-optimized eXtreme Gradient Boosting (XGBoost) model, validated through Spatial Block Cross-Validation to reduce spatial data leakage and provide a more conservative assessment of geographic transferability. Shapley Additive Explanations (SHAP) was used to interpret localized non-linear associations, threshold patterns, and spatially heterogeneous model responses. Empirical results indicate that anthropogenic socioeconomic intensity is the dominant predictive driver associated with spatial variation in ecological quality. The SHAP analysis identified model-derived threshold patterns, including an approximate population-density threshold around 4000 people per square kilometer and a corridor-distance response around 50 km from the G331 highway. To translate these model-derived explanatory insights into spatial governance scenarios, the Non-dominated Sorting Genetic Algorithm II (NSGA-II) was used to approximate the Pareto trade-off frontier between ecological integrity and socioeconomic expansion. This multi-objective optimization delineated three spatial governance scenarios and identified a Pareto-elbow configuration that supports compatible-use management. This closed-loop framework provides a transferable analytical approach for sustainability-oriented corridor governance by identifying where development may be concentrated, where ecological buffers should be strengthened, and where strict conservation should be prioritized. Agricultural economic resilience (AER) is not only a key pathway for promoting rural revitalization and ensuring food security, but also an important guarantee for sustainable agricultural development. Based on panel data for 1410 counties in China from 2014 to 2023, this study employs the entropy weight method, a double machine learning model (DML), an instrumental variable model, and a panel threshold model to systematically analyze the impact of traditional rural finance (TRF) on AER and its underlying mechanisms. It also examines the threshold effect of digital finance (DF) in the process through which TRF influences AER, and further explores the roles of DF and TRF in narrowing agricultural development disparities, with the aim of providing scientific evidence for rural revitalization and food security in China and other developing countries, and contributing to the sustainable development of agriculture. The results show that (1) TRF can significantly improve AER, with agricultural technological innovation (ATI) and agricultural socialized services (ASS) playing mediating roles; (2) DF and its dimensions, including coverage breadth, usage depth, and degree of digitalization, exhibit threshold effects in the impact of TRF on AER, and as the levels of DF and its dimensions increase, the positive effect of TRF shows a diminishing marginal trend, indicating a competitive crowding-out effect between the two; (3) the promoting effect of TRF on AER exhibits significant heterogeneity, being stronger in agricultural counties and in the eastern, central, and western regions, following a “Central > Eastern > Western” pattern, while it is not significant in the northeastern region; (4) TRF significantly reduces agricultural development disparities, whereas DF overall significantly exacerbates such disparities, although its different dimensions exhibit clear heterogeneity in their effects, with coverage breadth consistently and significantly widening regional agricultural development gaps. Policies for cultural heritage protection have increasingly shifted toward the integrated conservation and development of historical cultural landscapes. In vernacular settlements located in the southwestern border regions of China, some cultural landscape remains that were once widespread are gradually disappearing. Nevertheless, these landscapes continue to be recognized, valued, and maintained by local ethnic communities. Understanding how place-based perceptions are formed, how hidden cultural landscapes can be identified, and how their cultural significance can be interpreted is therefore of considerable importance. Drawing on landscape perception theory, this study develops an analytical framework that integrates landscape structure interpretation, oral history analysis, and local ethnic group perception. The archaeological remains of the “Ancient Temple” in Baiya City, located within the Zhaozhou intermontane basin (“Bazi”) in Dali, are selected as a case study. Through field investigations, oral history interviews, and Semantic Differential (SD) scale questionnaires, perception factors are examined across four dimensions—environment, ritual, construction, and psychology—to systematically analyze the elements shaping spatial perception. The results reveal that, although local ethnic groups exhibit relatively low levels of perception regarding the architectural form of the ancient temple, they maintain strong psychological and emotional attachments to ritual pathways, ruin landscapes, and related cultural elements. The remains of the “Ancient Temple” constitute an implicit cultural landscape that plays a significant role in shaping local cultural identity and sense of place. At the same time, it reflects the community’s capacity for self-organization and the latent mechanisms underlying the reconstruction of cultural space. Based on these findings, strategies for cultural landscape regeneration should emphasize the preservation of indigenous spatial order, the revitalization of local ritual practices, and the strengthening of ethnic psychological identity. This study contributes to a deeper understanding of the social functions and cultural significance of implicit cultural landscapes in contemporary urban and rural development and provides practical references for their conservation and regeneration. This study addresses the limited nationwide examination of Mountain Villages as strategic targets for regional revitalization amid rapid depopulation and population aging. Focusing on Mountain Villages located within Depopulation Regions in the Republic of Korea, this study quantitatively assessed workation suitability at the Eup-Myeon-Dong level and identified priority areas and differentiated policy directions. A workation suitability index was calculated using the CRITIC (Criteria Importance Through Intercriteria Correlation) method, and spatial clustering and potential–demand characteristics were examined through LISA (Local Indicators of Spatial Association) and quadrant analysis. The results showed that transportation accessibility indicators, including travel time to expressway interchanges and railway stations, had high information content in differentiating workation suitability among Mountain Villages. Suitability was high in the border areas between Gyeonggi-do and Gangwon State and parts of the central inland region, whereas low suitability was observed in northern Gangwon State and northern Gyeongsangbuk-do. High–High clusters tended to overlap with high-potential and high-demand areas, while Low–Low clusters were mainly associated with low-potential areas. By integrating suitability, spatial clustering, and demand conditions, this study provides an empirical framework for spatial decision-making. The findings suggest that workation policies for Mountain Villages should distinguish priority implementation areas from foundation-building areas according to accessibility, infrastructure, and demand levels.
