The rapid advancement of underwater wireless communication technologies is critical to unlocking the full potential of marine resource exploration and environmental monitoring. This paper reviews recent progress in three primary modalities: underwater acoustic communication, radio frequency (RF) communication, and underwater optical wireless communication (UWOC), each designed to address specific challenges posed by complex underwater environments. Acoustic communication, while effective for long-range transmission, is constrained by ambient noise and high latency; recent innovations in noise reduction and data rate enhancement have notably improved its reliability. RF communication offers high-speed, short-range capabilities in shallow waters, but still faces challenges in hardware miniaturization and accurate channel modeling. UWOC has emerged as a promising solution, enabling multi-gigabit data rates over medium distances through advanced modulation techniques and turbulence mitigation. Additionally, bio-inspired approaches such as electric field communication provide energy-efficient and robust alternatives under turbid conditions. This paper further examines the practical integration of these technologies in underwater platforms, including autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs), highlighting trade-offs between energy efficiency, system complexity, and communication performance. By synthesizing recent advancements, this review outlines the advantages and limitations of current underwater communication methods and their real-world applications, offering insights to guide the future development of underwater communication systems for robotic and vehicular platforms. This paper introduces a theoretical large-scale radio channel model for the downlink in cellular systems, aimed at estimating variations in received signal power at the user terminal as a function of device mobility. This enables applications such as direction-of-arrival (DoA) estimation, estimating power at subsequent points based on received power, and detection of coverage anomalies. The model is validated using real-world measurements from urban and suburban environments, achieving a maximum estimation error of 7.6%. In contrast to conventional models like Okumura–Hata, COST-231, Third Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) stochastic models, or ray-tracing techniques, which estimate average power under static conditions, the proposed model captures power fluctuations induced by terminal movement, a factor often neglected. Although advanced techniques such as wave-domain processing with intelligent metasurfaces can also estimate DoA, this model provides a simpler, geometry-driven approach based on empirical traces. While it does not incorporate infrastructure-specific characteristics or inter-cell interference, it remains a practical solution for scenarios with limited information or computational resources. Radio frequency (RF)-based wireless systems are broadly used in communication systems such as mobile networks, satellite links, and monitoring applications. These systems offer outstanding advantages over wired systems, particularly in terms of ease of installation. However, researchers are looking for safer alternatives as a result of worries about possible health problems connected to high-frequency radiofrequency transmission. Using the visible light spectrum is one promising approach; three cutting-edge technologies are emerging in this regard: Optical Camera Communication (OCC), Light Fidelity (Li-Fi), and Visible Light Communication (VLC). In this paper, we propose a Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO) modulation technology for Internet of Things (IoT) applications, utilizing an LED array and time-domain on-off keying (OOK). The proposed system is compatible with both rolling shutter and global shutter cameras, including commercially available models such as CCTV, webcams, and smart cameras, commonly deployed in buildings and industrial environments. Despite the compact size of the LED array, we demonstrate that, by optimizing parameters such as exposure time, camera focal length, and channel coding, our system can achieve up to 20 communication links over a 20 m distance with low bit error rate. For maritime cognitive radio networks (MCRN), spectrum sensing (SS) is challenging due to the movement of the sea, channel interference, and unstable link quality. Besides the basic sensing capabilities that are required, SS in MCRN also requires the ability to adapt to complex and dynamic environments. By transforming spectrum sensing into a classification problem and leveraging cyclostationary features and Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN), This paper proposes a classification-guided TC2NND (Transfer Cyclostationary- feature and Convolutional Neural Networks Detection) spectrum sensing algorithm, which regards the maritime spectrum sensing as a classification problem. The TC2NND algorithm first classifies the received signal features by extracting cycle power spectrum (CPS) features using the FFT (Fast Fourier Transform) Accumulation Method (FAM), and then makes a judgment using a variety of C2NND decision models. The experimental results demonstrate that the proposed TC2NND algorithm could achieve a detection probability of 91.5% with a false-alarm probability of 5% at SNR = −10 dB, which significantly outperforms the conventional methods. Radio frequency fingerprint identification (RFFI) leverages the unique characteristics of radio signals resulting from inherent hardware imperfections for identification, making it essential for applications in telecommunications, cybersecurity, and surveillance. Despite the advancements brought by deep learning in enhancing RFFI accuracy, challenges persist in model deployment, particularly when transferring RFFI models across different receivers. Variations in receiver hardware can lead to significant performance declines due to shifts in data distribution. This paper introduces the source-free cross-receiver RFFI (SCRFFI) problem, which centers on adapting pre-trained RF fingerprinting models to new receivers without needing access to original training data from other devices, addressing concerns of data privacy and transmission limitations. We propose a novel approach called contrastive source-free cross-receiver network (CSCNet), which employs contrastive learning to facilitate model adaptation using only unlabeled data from the deployed receiver. By incorporating a three-pronged loss function strategy—minimizing information entropy loss, implementing pseudo-label self-supervised loss, and leveraging contrastive learning loss—CSCNet effectively captures the relationships between signal samples, enhancing recognition accuracy and robustness, thereby directly mitigating the impact of receiver variations and the absence of source data. Our theoretical analysis provides a solid foundation for the generalization performance of SCRFFI, which is corroborated by extensive experiments on real-world datasets, where under realistic noise and channel conditions, that CSCNet significantly improves recognition accuracy and robustness, achieving an average improvement of at least 13% over existing methods and, notably, a 47% increase in specific challenging cross-receiver adaptation tasks. With the vigorous development of Internet of Things technologies, Cell-Free Radio Access Network (CF-RAN), leveraging its distributed coverage and single/multi-antenna Access Point (AP) coordination advantages, has become a key technology for supporting massive Machine-Type Communication (mMTC). However, under the grant-free random access mechanism, this network architecture faces the problem of information freshness degradation due to channel congestion. To address this issue, a joint decoding model based on logical grouping architecture is introduced to analyze the correlation between the successful packet transmission probability and the Peak Age of Information (PAoI) in both single-AP and multi-AP scenarios. On this basis, a global Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) algorithm is designed to dynamically adjust the channel access probability to minimize the average PAoI across the network. To reduce signaling overhead, a PSO algorithm based on local topology information is further proposed to achieve collaborative optimization among neighboring APs. Simulation results demonstrate that the global PSO algorithm can achieve performance closely approximating the optimum, while the local PSO algorithm maintains similar performance without the need for global information. It is especially suitable for large-scale access scenarios with wide area coverage, providing an efficient solution for optimizing information freshness in CF-RAN. Full article

Hybrid VLC-RF Channel Estimation for GFDM Wireless Sensor Networks Using Tree-Based Regressor

This paper proposes a tree-based regression model for hybrid channel estimation in wireless sensor networks (WSNs) in generalized frequency division multiplexing (GFDM) over both visible light communication (VLC) and radio frequency (RF) links. The hybrid channel incorporates both additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) and Rayleigh fading to mimic realistic environments. Traditional estimators, such as MMSE and LMMSE, often underperform in such heterogeneous and nonlinear conditions due to their analytical rigidity. To overcome these limitations, we introduce a data-driven approach using a decision tree regressor trained on 18,000 signal samples across 36 SNR levels. Simulation results show that support vector machine (SVM) achieved 91.34% accuracy and a BER of 0.0866 at 10 dB, as well as 96.77% accuracy with a BER of 0.0323 at 30 dB. Random forest achieved 91.01% accuracy and a BER of 0.0899 at 10 dB, as well as 97.88% accuracy with a BER of 0.0212 at 30 dB. The proposed tree model attained 90.83% and 97.63% accuracy with BERs of 0.0917 and 0.0237, respectively, at the corresponding SNR values. The distinguishing advantage of the tree model lies in its inference efficiency. It completes predictions on the test dataset in just 45.53 s, making it over three times faster than random forest (140.09 s) and more than four times faster than SVM (189.35 s). This significant reduction in inference time makes the proposed tree model particularly well suited for real-time and resource-constrained WSN scenarios, where fast and efficient estimation is often more critical than marginal gains in accuracy. The results also highlight a trade-off, where the tree model provides sub-optimal predictive performance while significantly reducing computational overhead, making it an attractive choice for low-power and latency-sensitive wireless systems. High demand for 6G wireless has made photonics-aided D-band (110–170 GHz) communication a research priority. Photonics-aided technology integrates optical and wireless communications to boost spectral efficiency and transmission distance. This study presents a Radio-over-Fiber (RoF) communication system utilizing photonics-aided technology for 4600 m long-distance D-band transmission. We successfully show the transmission of a 50 Gbps (25 Gbaud) QPSK signal utilizing a 128.75 GHz carrier frequency. Notwithstanding these encouraging outcomes, RoF systems encounter considerable obstacles, including pronounced nonlinear distortions and phase noise related to laser linewidth. Numerous factors can induce nonlinear impairments, including high-power amplifiers (PAs) in wireless channels, the operational mechanisms of optoelectronic devices (such as electrical amplifiers, modulators, and photodiodes), and elevated optical power levels during fiber transmission. Phase noise (PN) is generated by laser linewidth. Despite the notable advantages of classical Volterra series and deep neural network (DNN) methods in alleviating nonlinear distortion, they display considerable performance limitations in adjusting for phase noise. To address these problems, we propose a novel post-processing approach utilizing a two-dimensional convolutional neural network (2D-CNN). This methodology allows for the extraction of intricate features from data preprocessed using traditional Digital Signal Processing (DSP) techniques, enabling concurrent compensation for phase noise and nonlinear distortions. The 4600 m long-distance D-band transmission experiment demonstrated that the proposed 2D-CNN post-processing method achieved a Bit Error Rate (BER) of 5.3 × 10−3 at 8 dBm optical power, satisfying the soft-decision forward error correction (SD-FEC) criterion of 1.56 × 10−2 with a 15% overhead. The 2D-CNN outperformed Volterra series and deep neural network approaches in long-haul D-band RoF systems by compensating for phase noise and nonlinear distortions via spatiotemporal feature integration, hierarchical feature extraction, and nonlinear modelling. Complexity of non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) digital signal processing schemes is particularly relevant in mobile environments because of the varying channel conditions of every single user. In contrast to legacy modulation and coding schemes (MCSs), NOMA MCSs typically have irregular symbol constellations with asymmetric symbol decision regions affecting synchronization at the receiver. Research papers investigating signal processing in this emerging field usually lack sufficient details for facilitating software-defined radio (SDR) implementation. This work presents a new symbolic framework approach for simulating signal processing functions in SDR transmit–receive paths in a dynamic NOMA downlink use case. The proposed framework facilitates simple and intuitive implementation and testing of NOMA schemes and can be easily expanded and implemented on commercially available SDR hardware. We explicitly address several important design and measurement parameters and their relationship to different tasks, including variable constellation processing, carrier and symbol synchronization, and pulse shaping, focusing on quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM). The advantages of the proposed approach include intuitive symbolic modeling in a dynamic framework for NOMA signals; efficient, more accurate, and less time-consuming design flow; and generation of synthetic training data for machine-learning models that could be used for system optimization in real-world use cases. To address the issues of poor differentiation capability for high-order signals and low average recognition rates in existing communication modulation recognition techniques, this paper first performs denoising using an entropy-based dynamic Singular Value Decomposition (SVD) method and proposes a three-channel convolutional gated recurrent units (GRU) model combined with an improved SE attention mechanism for automatic modulation recognition.The model denoises in-phase/quadrature (I/Q) signals using the SVD method to enhance signal quality. By combining one-dimensional (1D) convolutional and two-dimensional (2D) convolutional, it employs a three-channel approach to extract spatial features and capture local correlations. GRU is utilized to capture temporal sequence features so as to enhance the perception of dynamic changes. Additionally, an improved SE block is introduced to optimize feature representation, adaptively adjust channel weights, and improve classification performance. Experiments on the RadioML2016.10a dataset show that the model has a maximum classification recognition rate of 92.54%. Compared with traditional CNN, ResNet, CLDNN, GRU2, DAE, and LSTM2, the average recognition accuracy is improved by 5.41% to 8.93%. At the same time, the model significantly enhances the differentiation capability between 16QAM and 64QAM, reducing the average confusion probability by 27.70% to 39.40%. Full article

The rise of the Internet of Things (IoT) has made it possible to explore different types of communication, such as underwater IoT (UIoT). This new paradigm allows the interconnection of ships, boats, coasts, objects in the sea, cameras, and animals that require constant monitoring. The use of sensors for environmental monitoring, tracking marine fauna and flora, and monitoring the health of aquifers requires the integration of heterogeneous technologies as well as wireless communication technologies. Aquatic mobile sensor nodes face various limitations, such as bandwidth, propagation distance, and data transmission delay issues. Owing to their versatility, wireless sensor networks support remote monitoring and surveillance. In this work, an architecture for a general packet radio service (GPRS) wireless sensor network is presented. The network is used to monitor the geographic position over the coastal area of the Gulf of Mexico. The proposed architecture integrates cellular technology and some ad hoc network configurations in a single device such that coverage is improved without significantly affecting the energy consumption, as shown in the results. The network coverage and energy consumption are evaluated by analyzing the attenuation in a proposed channel model and the autonomy of the electronic system, respectively. Full article

Communication Infrastructure Design for Reliable UAV Operations in Air Mobility Corridors

The integration of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) into urban air mobility (UAM) systems necessitates reliable and uninterrupted communication infrastructure to ensure safety, control, and data continuity within designated air corridors. This paper proposes and evaluates four radio repeater deployment strategies to support robust UAV communication in urban environments: Strategy 1 with non-overlapping radio coverage, Strategy 2 with fully overlapping coverage zones, Strategy 3 with alternating redundancy between repeater pairs, and Strategy 4 with full duplication of overlapping coverage. A continuous-time Markov modeling approach is employed to quantify communication availability under varying traffic loads and failure conditions. The strategies are assessed based on infrastructure requirements, reliability performance, and suitability for segmented and non-linear corridor geometries. The results show that increasing redundancy significantly improves reliability: for example, channel unavailability drops from 35% under Strategy 1 (no redundancy) to less than 0.5% under Strategy 4 (full duplication). Strategy 3 achieves a balanced performance, maintaining unavailability below 1% with approximately 50% fewer resources than Strategy 4. A case study in the Greenline district of Astana, Kazakhstan, illustrates the practical application of the framework, demonstrating how hybrid deployment strategies can address different operational and environmental demands. The results show that increasing redundancy significantly enhances availability, with Strategy 3 offering the most efficient balance between reliability and resource use. The proposed methodology provides a scalable foundation for designing resilient UAV communication systems to support future urban airspace operations. Full article

To enhance positioning capability and reliability within existing Communication Navigation Fusion Systems (CNFSs), this paper proposes an Asymmetric Double-Sideband Composite Localization Signal (ADCLS) and a dual-carrier aggregation dual-code loop tracking mechanism with fuzzy control. By organically integrating an embedded signal into the original positioning signal, the code loop is optimized via fuzzy control, while the ADCLS signal is processed as an asymmetric double-sideband signal for joint signal extraction. Experimental validation employs the 5G New Radio (NR) Time-Delay Line (TDL) channel model to simulate multipath propagation effects. The results show that this method improves the tracking accuracy of the code loop and the main carrier loop, thereby enhancing the ranging accuracy. Full article

In this paper, a four-channel optical emission module is developed using hybrid integration technology that integrates directly modulated laser (DML) chips, low-noise amplifier (LNA) chips, and control circuits, with dimensions of 24.4 mm × 21 mm × 5.9 mm. This module enables high-gain signal output and minimizes crosstalk between neighboring channels while improving integration. An equivalent circuit model of radio frequency (RF) signal transmission is established, and the accuracy of the model and the effectiveness of the approach to improve signal gain are verified using simulations and experiments. With optimized thermal management, the module has the ability to operate at stable temperatures across an ambient range of −55 °C to 75 °C. The module has a channel wavelength spacing of approximately 1 nm, and the −3 dB bandwidth of each channel exceeds 20 GHz. The crosstalk between neighboring channels is less than −65 dB. In the range of 0.8~25 GHz, the four-channel gain is approximately 15 dB through the integration of the LNA chip. The module achieves a noise figure (NF) of less than 30 dB. Full article

To address the challenge of collaborative nodes being unable to accurately perceive each other’s positions in global navigation satellite system (GNSS)-denied environments (such as after hostile interference or in urban canyons), we propose a GNSS-independent collaborative positioning radio frequency (RF) sensor. This sensor estimates inter-node distances and orientations using wireless measurements between nodes, without requiring pre-deployed anchor points. First, we designed a low-nanosecond latency ranging logic circuit on field-programmable gate array (FPGA) hardware, enabling relative distance estimation between nodes via a low-latency collaborative ranging (LLCR) algorithm without synchronization. Additionally, a synthetic aperture rotating antenna system was built to construct an echo space energy distribution matrix, based on dynamic–static dual-channel phase differences for high-precision, unambiguous azimuth measurement, followed by angle and distance data integration for localization. Then, a novel RF sensor hardware system was designed that was lightweight, low in cost, and high in performance. Finally, two generations of prototype models were developed and tested in both an anechoic chamber and mounted on unmanned vehicles outdoors in fields. The results demonstrate that the proposed sensor can achieve high-precision relative position estimation between collaborative nodes in the absence of GNSS, with a positioning error of within 0.4 m, indicating that it is suitable for mounting on unmanned vehicles and other autonomous systems for collaborative positioning.
