Design Thinking (DT) has emerged as a relevant methodology for addressing global challenges aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). This study presents a systematic literature review, conducted following PRISMA 2020 guidelines, which analyzes 42 peer-reviewed publications from 2013 to 2023. Through inductive content analysis, 10 core DT principles—such as empathy, iteration, user-centeredness, and systems thinking—I identified and thematically mapped to specific SDGs, including goals related to health, education, innovation, and climate action. The study also presents five real-world cases from diverse sectors such as technology, healthcare, and urban planning, illustrating how DT has been applied to address practical challenges aligned with the SDGs. However, the review identifies persistent gaps in the field: the lack of standardized evaluation frameworks, limited integration across SDG domains, and weak adaptation of ethical and contextual considerations, particularly in vulnerable communities. As a response, this paper recommends the adoption of structured impact assessment tools (e.g., Cities2030, Responsible Design Thinking), integration of design justice principles, and the development of participatory, iterative ecosystems for innovation. By offering both conceptual synthesis and applied insights, this article positions Design Thinking as a strategic and systemic approach for driving sustainable transformation aligned with the 2030 Agenda. Adapting Ophthalmology Practices in Puerto Rico During COVID-19: A Cross-Sectional Survey Study

Background/Objectives: The COVID-19 pandemic caused pronounced disorder in healthcare delivery globally, including ophthalmology. Our study explores how ophthalmologists in Puerto Rico (PR) altered their practices during the pandemic, confronting obstacles such as resource shortages, evolving public health mandates, and unique socio-economic and geographic constraints. The study aims to enhance preparedness for future public health crises. Methods: We conducted descriptive analyses on four online surveys distributed at crucial time points of the pandemic (March 2020, May 2020, August 2020, August 2021) to all practicing ophthalmologists in PR (N ≈ 200), capturing data on closures, patient volume, personal protective equipment (PPE) access, telemedicine use, and financial relief. Results: Survey responses ranged from 41% (n = 81) to 56% (n = 111). By March 2020, 22% (24/111) of respondents closed their offices. By May 2020, 20% (19/93) of respondents maintained a closed office, while 89% (64/72) of open offices reported seeing less than 25% of their usual patient volume. Access to PPE was a challenge, with 59% (65/111) reporting difficulty obtaining N95 masks in March 2020. Telemedicine usage increased initially, peaking in May 2020 and declining in July 2020. By August 2021, all respondents were fully vaccinated and most practices returned to pre-pandemic levels. Overall, 86% (70/81) of respondents found the surveys to be useful for navigating practice changes during the pandemic. Conclusions: PR ophthalmologists showed adaptability during the COVID-19 pandemic to maintain care given limited resources. Guidelines from professional organizations and real time surveys play an important role in future crisis preparedness. Full article

Macroeconomic Effects of Oil Price Shocks in the Context of Geopolitical Events: Evidence from Selected European Countries

For a long time, the explanation of the various determinants of oil price fluctuations and their impact on economic activity has been based on the supply and demand mechanism. However, with various volatile changes in the international situation in recent years, such as threats to public health and an increase in regional conflicts, special attention has been paid to the geopolitical context as an additional driver of oil price fluctuations. This study examines the relationship between oil price changes and GDP growth and other macroeconomic variables from the perspective of the vulnerability of oil-importing and oil-exporting countries to unexpected oil price shocks, driven by tense geopolitical events, in three European countries (Norway, Germany, and Poland). We apply the Structural Vector Autoregressive (SVAR) model and orthogonalized impulse response functions, based on quarterly data, in regard to two samples: the first spans 1995Q1–2019Q4 (pre-2020 sample), with relatively gradual changes in oil prices, and the second spans 1995Q1–2024Q2 (whole sample), with sudden fluctuations in oil prices due to geopolitical developments. A key finding of this research is that vulnerability to unpredictable oil price shocks related to geopolitical tensions is higher than in regard to expected gradual changes in oil prices, both in oil-importing and oil-exporting countries. Different causality patterns and stronger responses in regard to GDP growth during the period, including in regard to tense geopolitical events in comparison to the pre-2020 sample, lead to the belief that economies are not more resilient to oil price shocks as has been suggested by some studies, which referred to periods that were not driven by geopolitical events. Our research also suggests that countries implementing policies to reduce oil dependency and promote investment in alternative energy sources are better equipped to mitigate the adverse effects of oil price shocks. Highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) remains a persistent threat to global poultry production and public health. Current vaccine platforms show limited cross-clade efficacy and often fail to induce mucosal immunity. Recent advances in microbiome research reveal critical roles for gut commensals in modulating vaccine-induced immunity, including enhancement of mucosal IgA production, CD8+ T-cell activation, and modulation of systemic immune responses. Engineered commensal bacteria such as Lactococcus lactis, Bacteroides ovatus, Bacillus subtilis, and Staphylococcus epidermidis have emerged as promising live vectors for antigen delivery. Postbiotic and synbiotic strategies further enhance protective efficacy through targeted modulation of the gut microbiota. Additionally, artificial intelligence (AI)-driven tools enable predictive modeling of host–microbiome interactions, antigen design optimization, and early detection of viral antigenic drift. These integrative technologies offer a new framework for mucosal, broadly protective, and field-deployable vaccines for HPAI control. However, species-specific microbiome variation, ecological safety concerns, and scalable manufacturing remain critical challenges. This review synthesizes emerging evidence on microbiome–immune crosstalk, commensal vector platforms, and AI-enhanced vaccine development, emphasizing the urgent need for One Health integration to mitigate zoonotic adaptation and pandemic emergence. Despite the widespread accessibility of vaccines and antivirals, seasonal influenza virus epidemics continue to pose a threat to public health. In this study, we constructed a recombinant replication-deficient simian adenovirus type 25 vector carrying the full-length hemagglutinin (HA) of the H1N1 influenza virus, named rSAd25-H1. Both systemic and mucosal humoral immune responses, as well as the protective efficacy, were assessed in mice immunized via the intramuscular (IM) or intranasal (IN) route. A single-dose IM or IN administration of rSAd25-H1 elicited a robust systemic IgG antibody response, including hemagglutination inhibition antibodies. As expected, only IN immunization was able to induce IgA production in serum and respiratory mucosa. Notably, a single dose of rSAd25-H1 at the highest dose (1010 viral particles) conferred complete protection against lethal homologous H1N1 challenge in mice despite the route of administration. These findings demonstrate the potential of simian adenovirus type 25-based vectors as a promising candidate for intranasal vaccine development targeting respiratory pathogens. Full article

Fumonisins, primarily produced by Fusarium spp. and Aspergillus section nigri, are common contaminants in maize, cereal grains, and other processed and derived products, representing a significant risk to food safety and public health. This study presents the development and optimisation of a high-performance liquid chromatography method with fluorescence detection (HPLC-FLD) for the quantification of fumonisin B1 (FB1) and B2 (FB2) in various food matrices. In contrast with conventional protocols employing potassium phosphate buffers as the mobile phase, the proposed method utilises formic acid, offering enhanced compatibility with liquid chromatography systems. An automated online precolumn derivatisation with o-phthaldialdehyde (OPA) was optimised through experimental design and response surface methodology, enabling baseline separation of FB1 and FB2 derivatives in less than 20 min. The method demonstrated high sensitivity, with limits of detection of 0.006 µg mL−1 for FB1 and 0.012 µg mL−1 for FB2, and excellent repeatability (intraday RSD values of 0.85% and 0.83%, respectively). Several solid-phase extraction (SPE) strategies were evaluated to enhance sample clean-up using a variety of food samples, including dried figs, raisins, dates, corn, cornmeal, wheat flour, and rice. FumoniStar Inmunoaffinity columns were the only clean-up method that provided optimal recoveries (70–120%) across all tested food matrices. However, the MultiSep™ 211 column yielded good recoveries for both fumonisins in dried figs and raisins. Additionally, the C18 cartridge achieved acceptable recoveries for both fumonisins in dried figs and wheat flour. Full article

The recent surge in the popularity of brachycephalic dog breeds has raised concerns about their predisposition to serious health issues linked to breed-specific morphological traits. This study examined the demographic characteristics, motivations, and awareness of owners regarding welfare issues in four brachycephalic breeds (French Bulldogs, Bulldogs, Pugs, Boston Terriers). Methods: A total of 497 owners of brachycephalic dogs examined over six years at an Italian university veterinary hospital were considered; a subset of 75 owners completed a structured questionnaire. Based on responses to a key multiple-choice question about the main reason for breed choice, owners were classified into three groups: trend-driven (aesthetics/fashion), value-oriented (intelligence/behavior), and indeterminate. Results: Gender distribution did not differ significantly compared to the overall population, but brachycephalic owners were significantly younger (p < 0.001). Value-oriented owners were significantly more likely (p < 0.01) to consult a veterinarian before acquisition and showed better understanding of typical respiratory issues, which did not affect their purchasing decision. Trend-driven owners were more influenced by public figures (p < 0.05) and less engaged in preventive care. Conclusion: Our findings highlight the need for pre-acquisition veterinary counseling. Veterinarians can also assist breeders by promoting awareness of the ethical risks of selecting extreme traits in dogs. Full article

Humic Substances Promote the Activity of Enzymes Related to Plant Resistance

The extensive use of pesticides has significant implications for public health and the environment. Breeding crop plants is the most effective and environmentally friendly approach to improve the plants’ resistance. However, it is time-consuming and costly, and it is sometimes difficult to achieve satisfactory results. Plants induce defense responses to natural elicitors by interpreting multiple genes that encode proteins, including enzymes, secondary metabolites, and pathogenesis-related (PR) proteins. These responses characterize systemic acquired resistance. Humic substances trigger positive local and systemic physiological responses through a complex network of hormone-like signaling pathways and can be used to induce biotic and abiotic stress resistance. This study aimed to assess the effect of humic substances on the activity of phenylalanine ammonia-lyase (PAL), peroxidase (POX), and β-1,3-glucanase (GLU) used as a resistance marker in various plant species, including orange, coffee, sugarcane, soybeans, maize, and tomato. Seedlings were treated with a dilute aqueous suspension of humic substances (4 mM C L−1) as a foliar spray or left untreated (control). Leaf tissues were collected for enzyme assessment two days later. Humic substances significantly promoted the systemic acquired resistance marker activities compared to the control in all independent assays. Overall, all enzymes studied in this work, PAL, GLUC, and POX, showed an increase in activity by 133%, 181%, and 149%, respectively. Among the crops studied, citrus and coffee achieved the highest activity increase in all enzymes, except for POX in coffee, which showed a decrease of 29% compared to the control. GLUC exhibited the highest response to HS treatment, the enzyme most prominently involved in increasing enzymatic activity in all crops. Plants can improve their resistance to pathogens through the exogenous application of HSs as this promotes the activity of enzymes related to plant resistance. The repeated occurrence of SARS-CoV-2 variants, largely driven by virus–host interactions, was and will remain a public health concern. Spike protein mutations shaped viral infectivity, transmissibility, and immune escape. From February 2022 to April 2024, a local genomic surveillance program in Verona, Italy, was conducted on 1333 SARS-CoV-2-positive nasopharyngeal swabs via next generation full-length genome sequencing. Spike protein mutations were classified based on their prevalence over time. Mutations were grouped into five categories: fixed, emerging, fading, transient, and divergent. Notably, some divergent mutations displayed a “Lazarus effect,” disappearing and later reappearing in new lineages, indicating potential adaptive advantages in specific genomic contexts. This two-year surveillance study highlights the dynamic nature of spike protein mutations and their role in SARS-CoV-2 evolution. The findings underscore the need for ongoing mutation-focused genomic monitoring to detect early signals of variant emergence, especially among mutations previously considered disadvantageous. Such efforts are critical for driving public health responses and guiding future vaccine and therapeutic strategies. Full article

Despite growing global momentum to reduce the number of children who never received a dose of any vaccine, i.e., zero-dose (ZD) children, persistent geographic and social inequities continue to undermine progress toward universal immunization coverage. In Madagascar, where routine vaccination coverage remains below 50% in most regions, the non-governmental organization Doctors for Madagascar and public sector partners are implementing the SOAMEVA program: a targeted community-based initiative to identify and reach ZD children in sixteen underserved districts in the country’s south. This paper outlines the equity-sensitive evaluation design developed to assess the implementation and impact of SOAMEVA. It presents a forward-looking evaluation framework that integrates both quantitative program monitoring and qualitative community insights. By focusing at the fokontany level—the smallest administrative unit in Madagascar—the evaluation captures small-scale variation in ZD prevalence and program reach, allowing for a detailed analysis of disparities often masked in aggregated data. Importantly, the evaluation includes structured feedback loops with community health workers and caregivers, surfacing local knowledge on barriers to immunization access and program adoption. It also tracks real-time adaptations to implementation strategy across diverse contexts, offering insight into how routine immunization programs can be made more responsive, sustainable, and equitable. We propose eight design principles for conducting equity-sensitive evaluation of immunization programs in similar fragile settings. Full article

Incineration at sea is a significant source of marine pollution, threatening biodiversity and public health. Although Peru ratified the 1996 London Protocol in 2018, key deficiencies persist in its domestic legal framework, particularly the absence of clear and internationally aligned definitions for “incineration” and “incinerator.” These gaps hinder effective enforcement by the National Maritime Authority (NMA-DICAPI) and limit regulatory compliance with international obligations. This study analyzes Peru’s current legislation in light of the London Protocol and includes a comparative overview of regional regulatory approaches in Latin America. Based on this analysis, the study identifies regulatory inconsistencies that compromise environmental protection and proposes three key legal reforms: (1) refining the definition of “incineration” to reflect international standards; (2) formally incorporating a definition for “incinerator”; and (3) establishing specific administrative and economic sanctions for related infractions. Through comparative analysis with Mexico and Colombia’s approaches, we propose targeted amendments including refined definitions aligned with IMO standards and explicit administrative/economic sanctions. Implementing these recommendations would enhance Peru’s legal clarity, enforcement capacity, and compliance with international maritime law, reinforcing its role as a responsible actor in marine environmental governance. Heavy metal pollution represents a pervasive environmental challenge that significantly exacerbates the ever-increasing crisis of antimicrobial resistance and the capacity of microorganisms to endure and proliferate despite antibiotic interventions. This review examines the intricate relationship between heavy metals and AMR, with an emphasis on the underlying molecular mechanisms and ecological ramifications. Common environmental metals, including arsenic, mercury, cadmium, and lead, exert substantial selective pressures on microbial communities. These induce oxidative stress and DNA damage, potentially leading to mutations that enhance antibiotic resistance. Key microbial responses include the overexpression of efflux pumps that expel both metals and antibiotics, production of detoxifying enzymes, and formation of protective biofilms, all of which contribute to the emergence of multidrug-resistant strains. In the soil environment, particularly the rhizosphere, heavy metals disrupt plant–microbe interactions by inhibiting beneficial organisms, such as rhizobacteria, mycorrhizal fungi, and actinomycetes, thereby impairing nutrient cycling and plant health. Nonetheless, certain microbial consortia can tolerate and detoxify heavy metals through sequestration and biotransformation, rendering them valuable for bioremediation. Advances in biotechnology, including gene editing and the development of engineered metal-resistant microbes, offer promising solutions for mitigating the spread of metal-driven AMR and restoring ecological balance. By understanding the interplay between metal pollution and microbial resistance, we can more effectively devise strategies for environmental protection and public health. Full article

Background: Brain health is a growing public health priority due to the high global burden of neurological and mental disorders. Promoting brain health across the lifespan supports individual and societal well-being, creativity, and productivity. Objective: To address the need for specialized education in this field, the University of Bern developed a Certificate of Advanced Studies (CAS) in Brain Health. This article outlines the program’s rationale, structure, and goals. Program Description: The one-year, 15 ECTS-credit program is primarily online and consists of four modules: (1) Introduction to Brain Health, (2) Brain Disorders, (3) Risk Factors, Protective Factors and Interventions, and (4) Brain Health Implementation. It offers a multidisciplinary, interprofessional, life-course approach, integrating theory with practice through case studies and interactive sessions. Designed for healthcare and allied professionals, the CAS equips participants with skills to promote brain health in clinical, research, and public health contexts. Given the shortage of trained professionals in Europe and globally, the program seeks to build a new generation of brain health advocates. It aims to inspire action and initiatives that support the prevention, early detection, and management of brain disorders. Conclusions: The CAS in Brain Health is an innovative educational response to a pressing global need. By fostering interdisciplinary expertise and practical skills, it enhances professional development and supports improved brain health outcomes at individual and population levels. Full article

With the popularization of social media, information related to public health events has seen explosive growth online, making it essential to accurately identify informative tweets with decision-making and management value for public health emergency response and risk monitoring. However, existing methods often suffer performance degradation during cross-event transfer due to differences in data distribution, and research specifically targeting public health events remains limited. To address this, we propose the Label Confusion Domain Adversarial Network (LCDAN), which innovatively integrates label confusion with domain adaptation to enhance the detection of informative tweets across different public health events. First, LCDAN employs an adversarial domain adaptation model to learn cross-domain feature representation. Second, it dynamically evaluates the importance of different source domain samples to the target domain through label confusion to optimize the migration effect. Experiments were conducted on datasets related to COVID-19, Ebola disease, and Middle East Respiratory Syndrome public health events. The results demonstrate that LCDAN significantly outperforms existing methods across all tasks. This research provides an effective tool for information detection during public health emergencies, with substantial theoretical and practical implications. Full article

Testing the Temperature-Mortality Nonparametric Function Change with an Application to Chicago Mortality

The relationship between temperature and mortality is well-documented, yet most existing studies assume this relationship remains static over time. This study investigates whether the temperature-mortality association in Chicago from 1987 to 2000 has changed in shape or location of key features, such as change points. We apply nonparametric regression techniques to estimate the temperature-mortality functions for each year using daily mortality and temperature data from the National Morbidity, Mortality, and Air Pollution Study (NMMAPS) database. A permutation-based test is used to assess whether the shapes of these functions differ across time, while a bootstrap procedure evaluates the consistency of change points. Intensive simulation studies are conducted to evaluate the permutation-based test and bootstrap procedure based on Type I error and power. The proposed tests are compared with F tests in terms of Type I error and power. For the real data set, the analysis finds significant variation in the functional shapes across years, indicating evolving mortality responses to temperature. However, the estimated change points—temperatures associated with peak mortality—remain statistically consistent. These findings suggest that while the population’s overall vulnerability pattern may shift, the temperature threshold linked to maximum mortality has remained stable. This study contributes to understanding the temporal dynamics of climate-sensitive health outcomes and highlights the importance of flexible modeling in public health and climate adaptation planning.
