This study uses life cycle analysis (LCA) to evaluate the environmental impacts of co-firing bituminous coal with agricultural biomass waste, such as coconut and rice husks, emphasising circular economy principles. Seven experimental scenarios with different coal-to-biomass ratios were designed, ranging from pure coal to pure biomass. The results show that Scenario B (100% rice husk) achieved the best overall environmental performance, with the lowest global warming potential (300 kg CO2 equivalent), eutrophication potential (4.742 kg PO4 equivalent), and smog formation potential (0.012 kg C2H4 equivalent). Additionally, Scenario F (15% biomass mix) recorded the lowest acidification potential (57.39 kg SO2 eq), indicating that even partial substitution can yield significant environmental benefits. In contrast, Scenario C (100% coal) exhibited the highest acidification (164.08 kg SO2 eq) and eutrophication (8.82 kg PO4 eq) potential. Overall, the results demonstrate that co-firing biomass waste significantly reduces pollutant emissions compared to burning coal alone. This study highlights the effectiveness of biomass waste co-firing in mitigating environmental impacts, promoting resource recovery, and supporting a sustainable energy transition within a circular economy framework. Buckwheat, a gluten-free pseudocereal, is rich in dietary fiber, minerals, high-quality proteins, vitamins, and essential amino acids. Buckwheat husk, a by-product of dehulling, contains high levels of bioactive compounds such as polyphenols and dietary fibers. This study compares green extraction methods (ultrasound-assisted extraction, UAE; and microwave-assisted extraction, MAE) for recovering polyphenols from buckwheat husk. MAE improved polyphenol yield by 43.6% compared to conventional acidified methanol extraction. Structural and chemical analyses of the residual husk material using SEM, FTIR, and fiber analysis revealed that MAE alters husk properties, enhancing polyphenol accessibility. Thus, MAE appears an efficient and sustainable alternative to acid- and solvent-based extraction techniques. Extracts obtained via “green” methods retained strong antioxidant activity and showed significant modulation of inflammatory markers in human Caco-2 cells, highlighting the potential use of “green” buckwheat husk extracts for food and pharma applications. This work supports the valorization of buckwheat husk within a circular economy framework, promoting buckwheat husk as a valuable raw material for bioactive compound recovery in diverse applications. Acid mine drainage (AMD) remains a critical environmental challenge in South Africa due to its severe impact on water quality, ecosystems and public health. Numerous studies on AMD management, treatment and resource recovery have been conducted over the past 20 years. This study presents a comprehensive review of research activities on AMD in South Africa from 1998 to 2025, highlighting key trends, emerging challenges and future directions. The study reveals a significant focus on passive and active treatment methods, environmental remediation and the recovery of valuable resources, such as iron, rare earth elements (REEs) and gypsum. A bibliometric analysis was conducted to identify the most influential studies and thematic research areas over the years. Bibliometric tools (Biblioshiny and VOSviewer) were used to analyse the data that was extracted from the PubMed database. The findings indicate that research production has increased significantly over time, with substantial contributions from top academics and institutions. Advanced treatment technologies, the use of artificial intelligence and circular economy strategies for resource recovery are among the new research prospects identified in this study. Despite substantial progress, persistent challenges, such as scalability, economic viability and policy implementation, remain. Furthermore, few technologies have moved beyond pilot-scale implementation, underscoring the need for greater investment in field-scale research and technology transfer. This study recommends stronger industry–academic collaboration, the development of standardised treatment protocols and enhanced government policy support to facilitate sustainable AMD management. The study emphasises the necessity of data-driven approaches, sustainable technology and interdisciplinary cooperation to address AMD’s socioeconomic and environmental effects in the ensuing decades. In recent decades, the rapid expansion of the food processing industry has led to significant losses and waste, with the fruit and vegetable sector among the most affected. According to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), losses in this category can reach up to 60%. Vegetable waste includes edible parts discarded during processing, packaging, distribution, and consumption, often comprising by-products rich in bioactive compounds such as polyphenols, carotenoids, dietary fibers, vitamins, and enzymes. The underutilization of these resources constitutes both an economic drawback and an environmental and ethical concern. Current recovery practices, including their use in animal feed or bioenergy production, contribute to a circular economy but are often limited by high operational costs. In this context, fermentation has emerged as a promising, sustainable approach for converting vegetable by-products into value-added food ingredients. This process improves digestibility, reduces undesirable compounds, and introduces probiotics beneficial to human health. The present review examines how fermentation can improve the nutritional, sensory, and functional properties of plant-based foods. By presenting several case studies, it illustrates how fermentation can effectively valorize vegetable processing by-products, supporting the development of novel, health-promoting food products with improved technological qualities. Addressing the challenges of bulky, low-efficiency sound-insulation materials at low frequencies, this work proposes an acoustic metamaterial based on curve fractal channels. Each unit cell comprises a concentric circular-ring channel recursively iterated: as the fractal order increases, the channel path length grows exponentially, enabling outstanding sound-insulation performance within a deep-subwavelength thickness. Finite-element and transfer-matrix analyses show that increasing the fractal order from one to three raises the number of bandgaps from three to five and expands total stop-band coverage from 17% to over 40% within a deep-subwavelength thickness. Four-microphone impedance-tube measurements on the third-order sample validate a peak transmission loss of 75 dB at 495 Hz, in excellent agreement with simulations. Compared to conventional zigzag and Hilbert-maze designs, this curve fractal architecture delivers enhanced low-frequency broadband insulation, structural lightweighting, and ease of fabrication, making it a promising solution for noise control in machine rooms, ducting systems, and traffic environments. The method proposed in this paper can be applied to noise reduction of transmission parts for ceramic automation production. Full article

Efficient plastic waste end-of-life management is a serious worldwide environmental issue motivated by growing waste production and negative effects of wrongful disposal. This study presents a comparative overview of plastic waste management regimes within the European Union (EU), the United States of America (USA), and Romania, ranked with circular economy goals. By using the United States Environmental Protection Agency (US EPA) Waste Reduction Model (WARM), version 16, the study provides a quantified score to greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions within three large options of management: recycling, energy recovery through combustion, and landfilling. The model setup utilizes region-specific information on legislation, base technology, and recycling efficiency. The outcomes show that recycling always entails net GHG emissions reductions, i.e., −4.49 kg CO2e/capita/year for EU plastic waste and −20 kg CO2e/capita/year for USA plastic waste. Combustion and landfilling have positive net emissions from 1.76 to 14.24 kg CO2e/capita/year. Economic indicators derived from the model also show significant variation: salaries for PET management amounted to USD 2.87 billion in the EU and USD 377 million in the USA, and tax collection was USD 506 million and USD 2.01 billion, respectively. The conclusions highlight the wider environmental and socioeconomic benefits of recycling and reinforce its status as a cornerstone of circular-economy sustainable plastic waste management and a strategic element of national development agendas, with special reference to Romania’s national agenda. In light of pressing global nutritional needs, the valorization of agri-food waste constitutes a vital strategy for enhancing human health and nutrition, while simultaneously supporting planetary health. This integrated approach is increasingly indispensable within sustainable and equitable food systems. Recently, a sustainability-driven focus has shifted attention toward the valorization of the agri-food by-products as rich sources of bioactive compounds useful in preventing or treating chronic diseases. Agri-food by-products, often regarded as waste, actually hold great potential as they are rich in bioactive components, dietary fiber, and other beneficial nutrients from which innovative food ingredients, functional foods, and even therapeutic products are developed. This review aims to provide a comprehensive analysis of the current advances in recovering and applying such compounds from agri-food waste, with a particular focus on their roles in human health, sustainable packaging, and circular economy strategies. Methods: This review critically synthesizes recent scientific literature on the extraction, characterization, and utilization of bioactive molecules from agri-food by-products. After careful analysis of the PubMed and Scopus databases, only English-language articles from the last 10 years were included in the final narrative review. The analysis also encompasses applications in the nutraceutical, pharmaceutical, and food packaging sectors. Results: Emerging technologies have enabled the efficient and eco-friendly recovery of compounds such as polyphenols, carotenoids, and dietary fibers that demonstrate antioxidant, antimicrobial, and anti-inflammatory properties. These bioactive compounds support the development of functional foods and biodegradable packaging materials. Furthermore, these valorization strategies align with global health trends by promoting dietary supplements that counteract the effects of the Western diet and chronic diseases. Conclusions: Valorization of agri-food by-products offers a promising path toward sustainable development by reducing waste, enhancing public health, and driving innovation. This strategy not only minimizes waste and supports sustainability, but also promotes a more nutritious and resilient food system. Full article

Plastic waste accumulation is one of the most pressing environmental challenges of the 21st century, owing to the widespread use of synthetic polymers and the limitations of conventional recycling methods. Among available strategies, chemical upcycling via depolymerization has emerged as a promising circular approach that converts plastic waste back into valuable monomers and chemical feedstocks. This article provides an in-depth narrative review of recent progress in the upcycling of major plastic types such as PET, PU, PS, and engineering plastics through thermal, chemical, catalytic, biological, and mechanochemical depolymerization methods. Each method is critically assessed in terms of efficiency, scalability, energy input, and environmental impact. Special attention is given to innovative catalyst systems, such as microsized MgO/SiO2 and Co/CaO composites, and emerging enzymatic systems like engineered PETases and whole-cell biocatalysts that enable low-temperature, selective depolymerization. Furthermore, the conversion pathways of depolymerized products into high-purity monomers such as BHET, TPA, vanillin, and bisphenols are discussed with supporting case studies. The review also examines life cycle assessment (LCA) data, techno-economic analyses, and policy frameworks supporting the adoption of depolymerization-based recycling systems. Collectively, this work outlines the technical viability and sustainability benefits of depolymerization as a core pillar of plastic circularity and monomer recovery, offering a path forward for high-value material recirculation and waste minimization. Agricultural and industrial residues are increasingly recognized as valuable resources for sustainable innovation, offering significant potential for biotechnological applications. By integrating waste valorization into production systems, this approach aims to mitigate environmental impacts and enhance economic value across various sectors. The findings underline the critical need for further research and policy support to scale these solutions, advancing global sustainability goals through innovative resource management. In this perspective, this article reviews the utilization of key by-products, including coffee residues, sugarcane bagasse, whey, cassava wastewater (manipueira), and brewery waste, highlighting their transformation into high-value products such as biofuels, bioplastics, enzymes, bioactive compounds, and organic fertilizers. The discussion presented encompasses the challenges and opportunities in leveraging these residues, emphasizing the role of advanced technologies, intellectual property, and circular economy principles. Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are synthetically produced chemicals that are causing a major One Health crisis. These “forever chemicals” are widely distributed globally in air, water, and soil, and because they are highly mobile and extremely difficult to degrade in the environment. They cause additional health concerns in a circular bioeconomy and food system that recycles and reuses by-products and numerous types of waste materials. Uptake of PFAS by plants and food-producing animals ultimately leads to the consumption of PFAS-contaminated food that is associated with numerous adverse health and developmental effects in humans. Contaminated meat, milk, and eggs are some of the main sources of human PFAS exposure. Although there is no safe level of PFAS exposure, maximum tolerable PFAS consumption guidelines have been established for some countries. However, there is no international PFAS monitoring system, and there are no standardized international guidelines and mechanisms to prevent the consumption of PFAS-contaminated foods. Urgent action is needed to stop PFAS production except for critical uses, implementing effective water-purification treatments, preventing spreading sewage sludge on land and pastures used to produce food, and requiring marketers and manufacturers to use packaging that is free of PFAS. Circular RNAs (circRNAs) have emerged as a transformative class of RNA therapeutics, distinguished by their closed-loop structure conferring nuclease resistance, reduced immunogenicity, and sustained translational activity. While challenges in pharmacokinetic control and manufacturing standardization require resolution, emerging synergies between computational design tools and modular delivery platforms are accelerating clinical translation. In this review, we synthesize recent advances in circRNA therapeutics, with a focused analysis of their stability and immunogenic properties in vaccine and drug development. Notably, key synthesis strategies, delivery platforms, and AI-driven optimization methods enabling scalable production are discussed. Moreover, we summarize preclinical and emerging clinical studies that underscore the potential of circRNA in vaccine development and protein replacement therapies. As both a promising expression vehicle and programmable regulatory molecule, circRNA represents a versatile platform poised to advance next-generation biologics and precision medicine. Full article

Tidal seashell waste represents an abundant, underutilized marine resource that poses environmental disposal challenges but offers potential as a sustainable bio-filler in epoxy composites. This study investigates its incorporation into bio-based epoxy systems to reduce reliance on non-renewable materials and promote circular economy objectives. Processed seashell powder was blended into epoxy formulations, and response surface methodology was applied to optimize filler loading and resin composition. Comprehensive characterization included tensile strength, impact resistance, hardness, density, and thermal conductivity testing, along with microscopy analysis to evaluate filler dispersion and interfacial bonding. The optimized composites demonstrated improved hardness, density, and thermal stability while maintaining acceptable tensile and impact strength. Microscopy confirmed uniform filler distribution at optimal loadings but revealed agglomeration and void formation at higher contents, which can reduce interfacial bonding efficiency. These findings highlight the feasibility of valorizing marine waste as a reinforcing filler in sustainable composite production, supporting environmental goals and offering a scalable approach for the development of durable, lightweight materials suitable for structural, coating, and industrial applications. Plant by-products have gained significant attention due to their rich content in bioactive compounds, which exhibit promising antioxidant, antimicrobial, and antitumor properties. In European countries, vegetable waste generation ranged from 35 to 78 kg per capita in 2022, highlighting both the scale of the challenge and the potential for valorization. This review provides an overview of key studies investigating the potential of plant residues in biomedicine, highlighting their possible contents of antioxidant compounds, their antimicrobial and antitumor properties, as well as their applications in dermocosmetics and nutraceuticals. However, despite their potential, several challenges must be addressed, such as the standardization of extraction protocols, as bioactive compound profiles can vary with plant source, processing conditions, and storage methods. Effective segregation and storage protocols for household organic waste also require optimization to ensure the quality and usability of plant by-products in biomedicine. Emerging 4.0 technologies could help to identify suitable plant by-products for biomedicine, streamlining their selection process for high-value applications. Additionally, the transition from in vitro studies to clinical trials is hindered by gaps in the understanding of Absorption, Distribution, Metabolism, and Excretion (ADME) properties, as well as interaction and toxicity profiles. Nonetheless, environmental education and societal participation are crucial to enabling circular bioeconomy strategies and sustainable biomedical innovation. Full article

The olive oil industry, a key component of Southern Europe’s agricultural sector, generates large amounts of by-products during processing, including olive leaves, branches, stones, and seeds. In the context of growing environmental concerns and limited natural resources—particularly in the Mediterranean regions—there is increasing interest in circular economy approaches that promote the valorization of agricultural residues. These by-products are rich in bioactive compounds, particularly phenolics such as oleuropein and hydroxytyrosol, which are well known for their antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities. This study aimed to evaluate the phenolic content and antioxidant capacity of by-products from three olive cultivars using high-performance liquid chromatography with photodiode array detection (HPLC–PDA) and mass spectrometry (MS). The leaves and seeds, particularly from the “Cobrança” and a non-identified variety, presented the highest antioxidant activity, as well as the highest concentration of phenolic compounds, demonstrating once again the direct relationship between these two parameters. The identification of the compounds present demonstrated that the leaves and branches have a high diversity of phenolic compounds, particularly secoiridoids, flavonoids, phenylpropanoids, phenylethanoids, and lignans. An inverse relationship was observed between the chlorophyll and carotenoid content and the antioxidant activity, suggesting that phenolic compounds, rather than pigments, are the major contributors to antioxidant properties. Therefore, the by-products of the olive oil industry are a valuable source of sustainable bioactive compounds for distinct industrial sectors, such as the food, nutraceutical, and pharmaceutical industries, aligning with the European strategies for resource efficiency and waste reduction in the agri-food industries. Optimized Ultrasound-Assisted Extraction for Enhanced Recovery of Valuable Phenolic Compounds from Olive By-Products

The olive oil industry generates by-products like olive leaves and pomace, which are rich in bioactive compounds, especially polyphenols. This study applied a circular economy approach to valorize these residues using green ultrasound-assisted extraction (UAE) with GRAS solvents. Key parameters (solvent composition, ultrasound amplitude, and specific energy) were optimized via Response Surface Methodology (RSM) to enhance polyphenol recovery and yield. Ethanol concentration proved to be the most influential factor. Optimal conditions for olive pomace were 100% ethanol, 46 μm amplitude, and 25 J∙mL−1 specific energy, while olive leaves required 72% ethanol with similar ultrasound settings. Under these conditions, extracts were prepared and analyzed using HPLC-ESI-QTOF-MS and DPPH assays. The optimized UAE process achieved yields of 15–20% in less than 5 min and under mild conditions. Optimal extracts showed high oleuropein content (6 mg/g in leaves, 5 mg/g in pomace), lower hydroxytyrosol levels, and minimal oxidized derivatives, suggesting reduced degradation compared to conventional methods. These findings demonstrate UAE’s effectiveness in recovering valuable phenolics from olive by-products, supporting sustainable and efficient resource use. Full article
