This study offers the first systematic exploration of the Greek e-Government team, a public sector innovation unit that operated within the Office of the Prime Minister of Greece from 2009 to 2012—the sole example of such a unit in the country. It illustrates how strategically positioned innovation units can function as change agents within government bureaucracies. The purpose of this work was to analyze how this distinctive unit functioned by bridging policy formulation, legislative drafting, and technological implementation at the highest government levels. The research involved thematic analysis of original interviews conducted with most core members of the team. The findings highlight successes, notably the Diavgeia transparency platform, which markedly improved administrative transparency, accountability, and citizen access to government decisions. Important challenges were also identified, particularly regarding the sustainability of the unit, issues of institutionalization, and meaningful citizen engagement. The experience of the Greek e-Government team suggests that public sector innovation (PSI) units are most effective when they combine high-level political access with multidisciplinary expertise and operational flexibility. The analysis also reveals inherent tensions between the need for centralized coordination and the benefits of decentralized implementation, as well as challenges in maintaining citizen participation throughout the policy development process. High-precision 6D pose estimation for pick-and-place operations remains a critical problem for industrial robot arms in manufacturing. This study introduces an analytics-based solution for 6D pose estimation designed for a real-world industrial application: it enables the Staubli TX2-60L (manufactured by Stäubli International AG, Horgen, Switzerland) robot arm to pick up metal plates from various locations and place them into a precisely defined slot on a brake pad production line. The system uses a fixed eye-to-hand Intel RealSense D435 RGB-D camera (manufactured by Intel Corporation, Santa Clara, California, USA) to capture color and depth data. A robust software infrastructure developed in LabVIEW (ver.2019) integrated with the NI Vision (ver.2019) library processes the images through a series of steps, including particle filtering, equalization, and pattern matching, to determine the X-Y positions and Z-axis rotation of the object. The Z-position of the object is calculated from the camera’s intensity data, while the remaining X-Y rotation angles are determined using the angle-of-inclination analytics method. It is experimentally verified that the proposed analytical solution outperforms the hybrid-based method (YOLO-v8 combined with PnP/RANSAC algorithms). Experimental results across four distinct picking scenarios demonstrate the proposed solution’s superior accuracy, with position errors under 2 mm, orientation errors below 1°, and a perfect success rate in pick-and-place tasks. Accumulating Heterozygous Deleterious Mutations in Conserved Soybean Germplasm over Successive Regenerations

More than 5.9 million plant germplasm accessions currently conserved in over 850 national genebanks worldwide will accumulate deleterious mutations over long-term conservation. However, little is known about how mutations accumulate in germplasm under long-term conservation. An attempt was made using seed-based RNA-Seq analysis to identify and characterize deleterious genetic variants in 190 diverse soybean accessions that were conserved since 1972 and were regenerated up to 10 cycles. The analysis identified 588 deleterious variants, which were widely distributed across 20 soybean chromosomes, mostly present in 10 or fewer samples, associated with diverse biological processes, and largely predicted to be weakly and mildly detrimental. Significant differences in estimates of three mutation burdens (total, heterozygous, and homozygous) were found among the samples, including sample groups representing different countries of origin. Total and heterozygous mutation burden estimates were found to increase significantly with the number of conservation years since accession acquisition and the number of germplasm regenerations, but homozygous mutation burden estimates were not correlated with these two conservation-related accession features. Total mutation burden estimates were negatively correlated with expressed gene counts and RNA integrity numbers (RINs) and marginally positively associated with averaged gene expression levels. Correlations were also found among expressed gene count, averaged gene expression level, and RIN value. No significant differences were detected between seed-based and leaf-based estimates of total mutation burden, expressed gene count, averaged expression level, and RIN. These findings provide the first empirical evidence that total mutation burden increased primarily through the accumulation of heterozygous, rather than homozygous, deleterious mutations over successive soybean germplasm regenerations. This insight is useful for conducting informative assessments of deleterious mutation accumulation and enhancing the management and conservation of plant germplasm. Full article

Background: The long-term success of total knee arthroplasty (TKA) is often compromised by stress shielding, which can lead to bone resorption and even implant loosening. This study employs finite element analysis (FEA) to compare the stress-shielding effects of a knee prosthesis made from polyether ether ketone (PEEK) with a traditional titanium Ti6Al4V implant on an osteoporotic tibial bone model. Methods: Stress distribution and the stress-shielding factor (SSF) were evaluated at seven critical points in the proximal tibia under physiological loading conditions. Results: Results indicate that the PEEK prosthesis yields a more uniform stress transmission, with von Mises stress levels within the optimal 2–3 MPa range for bone maintenance and consistently negative or near-zero SSF values, implying minimal stress shielding. Conversely, titanium implants exhibited significant stress shielding with high positive SSF values across all points. Additionally, stress concentrations on the polyethylene liner were lower and more evenly distributed in the PEEK model, suggesting reduced wear potential. Conclusions: These findings highlight the biomechanical advantages of PEEK in reducing stress shielding and preserving bone integrity, supporting its potential use to improve implant longevity in TKA. Further experimental and clinical validation are warranted. Full article

Establishing an entrepreneurship education ecosystem is crucial for the continual nurturing of young entrepreneurs and, consequently, the enhancement of economic development. Beyond the expansion of entrepreneurship programs, the active involvement and support from relevant resources and external stakeholders are pivotal to constructing such ecosystems. However, obstacles arise from the lower intention of external stakeholders to participate, and constraints imposed by information technology, hindering the ecosystem’s development. The Metaverse, an innovative technology amalgamating three-dimensional virtual technologies with blockchain and artificial intelligence, emerges as a potential solution to overcome these barriers and construct an entrepreneurship education ecosystem. Despite this potential, there is a lack of analysis explaining how the Metaverse achieves this. To address this gap, a framework for entrepreneurship education ecosystems is established in this study, highlighting two barriers and elucidating how these barriers impede ecosystem construction. Furthermore, four efficiencies of the Metaverse are identified as key factors with positive effects in terms of surmounting barriers to ensure the successful establishment of an entrepreneurship education ecosystem: communication convenience, enhanced simulation environment, information filtering, and the creation of valuable information. (1) Background: This article aims to understand the forms and elements through which the inhabitants of the city of Medellin have configured their subjectivity in the context of the application of neoliberal policies in the last two decades. In this way, we can approach the frameworks of understanding that constitute a fundamental part of the individuation processes in which the incorporation of their subjectivities is evidenced in neoliberal contexts that, in the historical process, have been converging with authoritarian, antidemocratic and neoconservative elements. (2) Method: A qualitative approach with a hermeneutic-interpretative paradigm was used. In-depth semi-structured interviews were conducted with 41 inhabitants of Medellín who were politically identified with right-wing or center-right positions. Data analysis included thematic coding to identify patterns of thought and points of view. (3) Results: Participants associate success with individual effort and see state intervention as an obstacle to development. They reject redistributive policies, arguing that they generate dependency. In addition, they justify authoritarian models of government in the name of security and progress, from a moral superiority, which is related to a negative and stigmatizing perception of progressive sectors and a negative view of the social rule of law and public policies with social sense. (4) Conclusions: The naturalization of merit as a guiding principle, the perception of themselves as morally superior based on religious values that grant a subjective place of certainty and goodness; the criminalization of expressions of political leftism, mobilizations and redistributive reforms and support for policies that establish authoritarianism and perpetuate exclusion and structural inequalities, closes roads to a participatory democracy that enables social and economic transformations. Bare land exposed by glacier retreat provides new opportunities for ecosystem development. Investigating primary vegetation succession in deglaciated regions can provide significant insights for ecological restoration, particularly for future climate change scenarios. Nonetheless, research on this topic in the Qinghai–Tibet Plateau has been exceedingly limited. This study aimed to investigate vegetation succession in the deglaciated area of the Zepu glacier during the Little Ice Age in southeastern Tibet. Quadrat surveys were performed on arboreal communities, and trends in vegetation change were assessed utilizing multi-year (1986–2024) remote sensing data. The findings indicate that vegetation succession in the Zepu glacier deglaciated area typically adheres to a sequence of bare land–shrub–tree, divided into four stages: (1) shrub (species include Larix griffithii Mast., Hippophae rhamnoides subsp. yunnanensis Rousi, Betula utilis D. Don, and Populus pseudoglauca C. Wang & P. Y. Fu); (2) broadleaf forest primarily dominated by Hippophae rhamnoides subsp. yunnanensis Rousi; (3) mixed coniferous–broadleaf forest with Hippophae rhamnoides subsp. yunnanensis Rousi and Populus pseudoglauca C. Wang & P. Y. Fu as the dominant species; and (4) mixed coniferous–broadleaf forest dominated by Picea likiangensis (Franch.) E. Pritz. Soil depth and NDVI both increase with succession. Species diversity is significantly higher in the third stage compared to other successional stages. In addition, soil moisture content is significantly greater in the broadleaf-dominated communities than in the conifer-dominated communities. An analysis of NDVI from 1986 to 2024 reveals an overall positive trend in vegetation recovery in the area, with 93% of the area showing significant vegetation increase. Temperature is the primary controlling factor for this recovery, showing a positive correlation with vegetation cover. The results indicate that Key ecological indicators—including species composition, diversity, NDVI, soil depth, and soil moisture content—exhibit stage-specific patterns, reflecting distinct phases of primary succession. These findings enhance our comprehension of vegetation succession in deglaciated areas and their influencing factors in deglaciated areas, providing theoretical support for vegetation restoration in climate change. Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a sleep-related respiratory disorder characterized by partial or complete obstruction of the upper airway, typically resulting in a decrease in arterial oxygen saturation and repeated awakenings from sleep. It is the most common sleep-related respiratory disorder, affecting 9% to 38% of adults. OSA is associated with loss of tone, improper contraction of the tongue, and pharyngeal dilator muscles of the upper airway during sleep. The gold-standard treatment for moderate-to-severe OSA is continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP). However, many patients have poor long-term compliance with CPAP. Stimulation of the upper airway with electrical activation of the hypoglossal nerve has emerged as a promising treatment for patients with moderate-to-severe OSA who have failed CPAP therapy. Objectives: The present paper aims to review the literature regarding neurostimulation for the treatment of OSA. Conclusions: Hypoglossal nerve stimulation (HNS) has shown favorable success and low morbidity in the management of moderate-to-severe OSA. Full article

Untargeted Metabolomic Identifies Potential Seasonal Biomarkers of Semen Quality in Duroc Boars

High semen quality is vital for reproductive success in the swine industry; however, seasonal fluctuations often compromise this quality. The molecular mechanism underlying these seasonal effects on semen quality remains largely unclear. This study employed untargeted metabolomic profiling of boar seminal plasma (SP) to identify metabolites and metabolic pathways associated with semen quality during the summer and winter months. Semen samples were collected from mature Duroc boars at a commercial boar stud and classified as Passed or Failed based on motility and morphology. SP from five samples per group was analyzed using ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography–mass spectrometry (UHPLC-MS). In total, 373 metabolites were detected in positive ion mode and 478 in negative ion mode. Several differentially expressed metabolites (DEMs) were identified, including ergothioneine, indole-3-methyl acetate, and avocadyne in the summer, as well as LysoPC, dopamine, and betaine in the winter. These metabolites are associated with key sperm functions, including energy metabolism, antioxidant defense, and capacitation. KEGG pathway analysis indicated enrichment in starch and sucrose metabolism, pyrimidine metabolism, and amino acid metabolism across the seasons. Overall, the results reveal that SP metabolomic profiles vary with the season, thereby influencing semen quality. The identified metabolites may serve as potential biomarkers for assessing semen quality and enhancing reproductive efficiency in swine production. Full article

SMART DShot: Secure Machine-Learning-Based Adaptive Real-Time Timing Correction

The exponential growth of autonomous systems demands robust security mechanisms that can operate within the extreme constraints of real-time embedded environments. This paper introduces SMART DShot, a groundbreaking machine learning-enhanced framework that transforms the security landscape of unmanned aerial vehicle motor control systems through seamless integration of adaptive timing correction and real-time anomaly detection within Digital Shot (DShot) communication protocols. Our approach addresses critical vulnerabilities in Electronic Speed Controller (ESC) interfaces by deploying four synergistic algorithms—Kalman Filter Timing Correction (KFTC), Recursive Least Squares Timing Correction (RLSTC), Fuzzy Logic Timing Correction (FLTC), and Hybrid Adaptive Timing Correction (HATC)—each optimized for specific error characteristics and attack scenarios. Through comprehensive evaluation encompassing 32,000 Monte Carlo test iterations (500 per scenario × 16 scenarios × 4 algorithms) across 16 distinct operational scenarios and PolarFire SoC Field-Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) implementation, we demonstrate exceptional performance with 88.3% attack detection rate, only 2.3% false positive incidence, and substantial vulnerability mitigation reducing Common Vulnerability Scoring System (CVSS) severity from High (7.3) to Low (3.1). Hardware validation on PolarFire SoC confirms practical viability with minimal resource overhead (2.16% Look-Up Table utilization, 16.57 mW per channel) and deterministic sub-10 microsecond execution latency. The Hybrid Adaptive Timing Correction algorithm achieves 31.01% success rate (95% CI: [30.2%, 31.8%]), representing a 26.5% improvement over baseline approaches through intelligent meta-learning-based algorithm selection. Statistical validation using Analysis of Variance confirms significant performance differences (F(3,1996) = 30.30, p < 0.001) with large effect sizes (Cohen’s d up to 4.57), where 64.6% of algorithm comparisons showed large practical significance. SMART DShot establishes a paradigmatic shift from reactive to proactive embedded security, demonstrating that sophisticated artificial intelligence can operate effectively within microsecond-scale real-time constraints while providing comprehensive protection against timing manipulation, de-synchronization, burst interference, replay attacks, coordinated multi-channel attacks, and firmware-level compromises. This work provides essential foundations for trustworthy autonomous systems across critical domains including aerospace, automotive, industrial automation, and cyber–physical infrastructure. These results conclusively demonstrate that ML-enhanced motor control systems can achieve both superior security (88.3% attack detection rate with 2.3% false positives) and operational performance (31.01% timing correction success rate, 26.5% improvement over baseline) simultaneously, establishing SMART DShot as a practical, deployable solution for next-generation autonomous systems. Objective: This retrospective observational study evaluated the efficacy and safety of an ovarian stimulation protocol for embryo banking that involves continuous administration of clomiphene citrate (CC) in combination with gonadotropins, without the use of GnRH antagonists. Methods: Conducted at the Serum IVF Clinic in Athens, Greece, the study included 250 women aged 25–45 who underwent IVF for embryo banking. The protocol involved administering 150 mg of CC daily from day 2 of the menstrual cycle until the day before hCG trigger, alongside 150 IU/day of Meriofert. Outcomes assessed included oocyte yield, fertilization rates, incidence of ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS), and hormonal correlations. Comparative and regression analyses explored differences between age groups and predictors of success. Results: The protocol demonstrated a favorable safety profile with no cases of OHSS and yielded a mean of 10.25 oocytes per patient. Group analysis showed significantly more oocytes retrieved in women under 40 (mean: 12.5) versus those over 40 (mean: 8.43), while fertilization rates were paradoxically higher in the older cohort (59.16% vs. 30.68%, p < 0.0001). Regression models revealed basal FSH to be a significant inverse predictor of oocyte yield, but it was positively associated with fertilization rate. Continuous CC use effectively suppressed premature LH surges without compromising oocyte or embryo quality, allowing flexible and cost-effective stimulation with minimal monitoring. Conclusions: Continuous administration of clomiphene citrate in combination with gonadotropins presents a promising, antagonist-free ovarian stimulation protocol for embryo banking. The approach is economically efficient, reduces monitoring requirements, and maintains safety and effectiveness and is particularly notable in women over 40. Further studies are warranted to validate these findings and refine protocol mechanisms. Full article

Oxidative stress is a defining and pervasive driver of neurodegenerative diseases, including Alzheimer’s disease (AD), Parkinson’s disease (PD), and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). As a molecular accelerant, reactive oxygen species (ROS) and reactive nitrogen species (RNS) compromise mitochondrial function, amplify lipid peroxidation, induce protein misfolding, and promote chronic neuroinflammation, creating a positive feedback loop of neuronal damage and cognitive decline. Despite its centrality in promoting disease progression, attempts to neutralize oxidative stress with monotherapeutic antioxidants have largely failed owing to the multifactorial redox imbalance affecting each patient and their corresponding variation. We are now at the threshold of precision redox medicine, driven by advances in syndromic multi-omics integration, Artificial Intelligence biomarker identification, and the precision of patient-specific therapeutic interventions. This paper will aim to reveal a mechanistically deep assessment of oxidative stress and its contribution to diseases of neurodegeneration, with an emphasis on oxidatively modified proteins (e.g., carbonylated tau, nitrated α-synuclein), lipid peroxidation biomarkers (F2-isoprostanes, 4-HNE), and DNA damage (8-OHdG) as significant biomarkers of disease progression. We will critically examine the majority of clinical trial studies investigating mitochondria-targeted antioxidants (e.g., MitoQ, SS-31), Nrf2 activators (e.g., dimethyl fumarate, sulforaphane), and epigenetic reprogramming schemes aiming to re-establish antioxidant defenses and repair redox damage at the molecular level of biology. Emerging solutions that involve nanoparticles (e.g., antioxidant delivery systems) and CRISPR (e.g., correction of mutations in SOD1 and GPx1) have the potential to transform therapeutic approaches to treatment for these diseases by cutting the time required to realize meaningful impacts and meaningful treatment. This paper will argue that with the connection between molecular biology and progress in clinical hyperbole, dynamic multi-targeted interventions will define the treatment of neurodegenerative diseases in the transition from disease amelioration to disease modification or perhaps reversal. With these innovations at our doorstep, the future offers remarkable possibilities in translating network-based biomarker discovery, AI-powered patient stratification, and adaptive combination therapies into individualized/long-lasting neuroprotection. The question is no longer if we will neutralize oxidative stress; it is how likely we will achieve success in the new frontier of neurodegenerative disease therapies. Full article

Evidence of Graft Incompatibility and Rootstock Scion Interactions in Cacao

This study sought to quantify and characterize diverse rootstock scion interactions in cacao around graft compatibility, disease resistance, nutrient use efficiency, vigor traits, and translocation of nonstructural carbohydrates. In total, 106 grafts were performed with three scion cultivars (Matina 1/6, Criollo 22, Pound 7) and nine diverse open-pollinated seedling populations (BYNC, EQX 3348, GNV 360, IMC 14, PA 107, SCA 6, T 294, T 384, T 484). We found evidence for both local and translocated graft incompatibility. Cross sections and Micro-XCT imaging revealed anatomical anomalies, including necrosis and cavitation at the junction and accumulation of starch in the rootstock directly below the graft junction. Scion genetics were a significant factor in explaining differences in graft take, and graft take varied from 47% (Criollo 22) to 72% (Pound 7). Rootstock and scion identity both accounted for differences in survival over the course of the 30-month greenhouse study, with a low of 28.5% survival of Criollo 22 scions and a high of 72% for Pound 7 scions. Survival by rootstocks varied from 14.3% on GNV 360 to 100% survival on T 294 rootstock. A positive correlation of 0.34 (p = 0.098) was found between the graft success of different rootstock–scion combinations and their kinship coefficient, suggesting that relatedness of stock and scion could be a driver of incompatibility. Significant rootstock–scion effects were also observed for nutrient use efficiency, plant vigor, and resistance to Phytophthora palmivora. These findings, while preliminary in nature, highlight the potential of rootstock breeding to improve plant nutrition, resilience, and disease resistance in cacao. Full article

Xylitol Antioxidant Properties: A Potential Effect for Inflammation Reduction in Menopausal Women?—A Pilot Study

Introduction: Oxidative stress is a key factor in the pathogenesis of many chronic diseases, especially in postmenopausal women. Xylitol, a sugar alcohol with potential antioxidant properties, may affect oxidative balance when used as a sugar substitute. Aim: This pilot study aimed to assess the effect of replacing sucrose with xylitol on serum antioxidant capacity in postmenopausal women. Methods: This study included 34 women aged 50 to 65 years who successively consumed 5 g/d, 10 g/d, and 15 g/d of xylitol. The dietary intervention lasted a total of 6 weeks, with each phase covering a 2-week period. Diet was assessed twice based on a 7-day dietary interview (Diet 6.0, NIZP–PZH, Warsaw). The material for this study was venous blood. Antioxidant capacity was determined using the DPPH radical scavenging method and the ABTS cation radical scavenging method. Results: In both methods, a significant increase in serum antioxidant potential was observed after replacing sugar with xylitol (p < 0.0001). An increase in the ability to neutralize free radicals was observed in almost all women studied. Additional analysis of the effect of selected nutrients on the obtained effects of the nutritional intervention showed that the most significant effect could potentially be exerted by manganese, maltose, sucrose, and mercury, and the strongest positive correlation was exerted by vitamin A, retinol, and vitamin E. Although the values obtained in the constructed models were not statistically significant, the large effect indicates potentially significant relationships that could have a significant impact on serum antioxidant potential in the studied group of women. Conclusions: The results suggest a potential role of xylitol in enhancing antioxidant defense mechanisms in menopausal women. Although the sample size was relatively small, this study was powered at approximately 80% to detect large effects, supporting the reliability of the observed results. Nevertheless, given the pilot nature of this study, further research with larger cohorts is warranted to confirm these preliminary observations and to clarify the clinical significance of xylitol supplementation in populations exposed to oxidative stress. Biosphere Reserves (BRs), designated by UNESCO, are uniquely positioned to serve as model territories for sustainable development, as they aim to harmonize biodiversity conservation with the socio-economic vitality and cultural identity of local communities. This work examines the commitment of the Spanish Network of Biosphere Reserves to the United Nations 2030 Agenda and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Using a survey-based research design, this study assesses the extent to which the reserves have integrated the SDGs into their strategic frameworks and operational practices. It also identifies and analyses successful initiatives and best practices implemented across Spain that exemplify this integration. The findings highlight the need for enhanced awareness and understanding of the 2030 Agenda among stakeholders, alongside stronger mechanisms for participation, cooperation, and governance. The conclusion emphasises the importance of equipping all reserves with strategic planning tools and robust systems for monitoring, evaluation, and accountability. Moreover, the analysis of exemplary cases reveals the transformative potential of sustainability-oriented projects—not only in advancing environmental goals but also in revitalizing local economies and reinforcing cultural heritage. These insights contribute to a broader understanding of how BRs can act as dynamic laboratories for sustainable development and heritage preservation. Full article
