Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

The digitalised and rapidly changing world of the 21st century requires many new competences, skills and knowledge elements. Adapting to change and the changing environment requires new and innovative responses from individuals and businesses alike. Meeting these challenges will require significant innovation and new knowledge and experience. The ability to learn from each other and to collaborate, which requires an agile, open-minded approach, has been valued to an unprecedented extent. The aim of this special issue is to provide a platform for peer learning through papers that are useful at the academic, individual and corporate levels for the promotion, effective management and successful implementation of innovations. We see this area as a special project that, due to its novelty, will shed light on new aspects ranging from change management, digital and financial awareness to risk management, in order to explore as broadly as possible the related areas.

This paper aims to provide a framework for guiding organizations toward Agile practices for project management. Through a case study analysis conducted in an information technology company, the paper aims to explore the interplay between current organization structure and project management approaches, the set of competencies, and the cultural change required for a transition toward Agile transformation. The paper provides a framework comprising four main blocks necessary for guiding organizations toward Agile practices for successful project management. The framework proposed demonstrates that for organizations to be nimble and to improve teamwork performance, it is necessary to undertake a set of changes in culture, competencies, structure, and approaches. The findings highlight the importance of a structured approach to Agile transformation, with particular emphasis on top management support and continuous learning. By formalizing Agile initiatives through structured approaches and continuous engagement, organizations can foster a shared sense of purpose among team members, ensuring sustained commitment and facilitating smoother transitions. Artificial Intelligence (AI) startups possess four key attributes; being small enterprises, adopting AI technology, undergoing digital transformation, and using big data systems to enhance their competitiveness. This study aims to identify the key influencing factors needed to enhance the competitiveness of AI technology-based startups and to suggest a decision-making model to improve the technology and business competitiveness of AI startups in the digital era. To achieve this, the hierarchy concept framework was built with four evaluation areas based on the mechanism-based view theory, and the 16 evaluation factors that can influence were identified through existing literature, combining factors related to the digital transformation, technological application, and business competitiveness of the startups. These factors were analyzed using the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) by the survey, targeting experts in South Korea. The analysis results indicate that the subject area was the most crucial for the business competitiveness of AI startups. It was also revealed that the subject’s strategic mind is the most significant factor to AI startups’ success. In the case of two control groups, categorized as ‘AI experts’ and ‘startup experts’, AI experts chose the subject as the most important area, whereas startup experts selected the environment, and significant differences were observed in all other factors. The results of this study will provide implications for strengthening the business competitiveness of AI startups and factors important for the growth of AI startups in this era. Full article

In today’s digital era, where communication is primarily conducted using computers and other technological devices, an agile mindset is not enough to be sustainable. Given the significant influence of human behaviour in agile environments, it is common for emotions to come into play among team members, particularly when they seek to assert their opinions or perspectives. Having digital emotional intelligence (DEQ) is crucial for agile team members in the current digital age, as it allows them to comprehend the emotions of their fellow team members using digital tools and technologies. This study focused on determining the reciprocal influence for team members between DEQ and an agile mindset in an agile environment. Qualitative research was implemented using semi-structured interviews. The identified participants were industry agnostic and were the team members working in agile projects, transitioning to agile and working in hybrid projects. The findings revealed that the intersection of agile mindset and DEQ is self-awareness. Self-awareness includes psychological empowerment, communication and collaboration, and respect. Possessing an agile mindset and DEQ in an agile environment has advantages, including improved virtual collaboration, faster adaptation to new technologies, better management of digital distractions, enhanced customer focus in digital channels, and improved data literacy. Artificial Intelligence (AI) applications streamline workflows, automate tasks, and require adaptive strategies for effective integration into business processes. This research explores the transformative influence of AI on various industries, such as software engineering, automation, education, accounting, mining, legal services, and media. We investigate the relationship between technological advancements and the job market to identify relevant skills for individuals and organizations for implementing and managing AI systems and human–machine interactions necessary for actual and future jobs. We focus on the essential adaptations for individuals and organizations to flourish in this era. To bridge the gap between AI-driven demands and the existing capabilities of the workforce, we employ the Rapid Review methodology to explore the integration of AI in businesses, identify crucial skill sets, analyze challenges, and propose solutions in this dynamic age. We searched the Scopus database, screening a total of 39 articles, of which we selected 20 articles for this systematic review. The inclusion criteria focused on conference papers and journal articles from 2020 or later and written in English. The selected articles offer valuable insights into the impact of AI on education, business, healthcare, robotics, manufacturing, and automation across diverse sectors, as well as providing perspectives on the evolving landscape of expertise. The findings underscore the importance of crucial skill sets, such as technical proficiency and adaptability, to successfully adopt AI. Businesses respond strategically by implementing continuous skill adaptation and ethical technology to address challenges. The paper concludes by emphasizing the imperative of balanced skill development, proactive education, and strategic integration to navigate the profound impact of AI on the workforce effectively.
