Insect pests cause severe damage and yield losses to many agricultural crops globally. The use of chemical pesticides on agricultural crops is not recommended because of their toxic effects on the environment and consumers. In addition, pesticide toxicity reduces soil fertility, poisons ground waters, and is hazardous to soil biota. Therefore, applications of entomopathogenic nematodes (EPNs) and plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) are an alternative, eco-friendly solution to chemical pesticides and mineral-based fertilizers to enhance plant health and promote sustainable food security. This review focuses on the biological and ecological aspects of these organisms while also highlighting the practical application of molecular communication approaches in developing a novel plant health product. This insight will support this innovative approach that combines PGPR and EPNs for sustainable crop production. Several studies have reported positive interactions between nematodes and bacteria. Although the combined presence of both organisms has been shown to promote plant growth, the molecular interactions between them are still under investigation. Integrating molecular communication studies in the development of a new product could help in understanding their relationships and, in turn, support the combination of these organisms into a single plant health product. Modern meat processing faces several challenges, including high resource consumption, environmental impact, and the need to enhance the nutritional and biological value of finished products. In this context, interest is growing in functional plant-based ingredients capable of improving the quality of meat products. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of adding 0.01% hemp protein powder and 0.01% sea buckthorn extract (based on the weight of unsalted raw material) on the nutritional, technological, and microbiological characteristics of cooked-smoked sausages. The results demonstrated an increase in total protein content, a 2.5-fold rise in tocopherol levels, as well as a 17.9% improvement in the Amino Acid Score of threonine and a 2.48% increase in the biological value of protein. Samples enriched with plant-based components exhibited enhanced organoleptic properties and greater storage stability over 36 days. In addition, extrusion parameters for the production of the protein additive were optimized, resulting in a stable functional ingredient. Full article

The rhizosphere microbiome plays an important role in carbon- and nitrogen-cycling in soil and in the stress response of plants. It also affects the function of the ammonium transporter (AmtB) that senses nitrogen levels inside and outside the cells of the associative nitrogen-fixing bacterium GXGL-4A. However, the potential mechanism of the interaction between the AmtB deletion mutant of GXGL-4A (∆amtB) and microorganisms in the rhizosphere of plants under low-nitrogen stress is still unclear. As revealed by transcriptome analyses, mutation of the amtB gene in GXGL-4A resulted in a significant up-regulation of many functional genes associated with nitrogen fixation and transportation at transcription level. The application of ∆amtB changed the nitrogen level in the rhizosphere of cucumber seedlings and reshaped the microbial community structure in the rhizosphere, enriching the relative abundance of Actinobacteriota and Gemmatimonadota. Based on bacterial functional prediction analyses, the metabolic capacities of rhizobacteria were improved after inoculation of cucumber seedlings with the original strain GXGL-4A or the ∆amtB mutant, resulting in the enhancement of amino acids, lipids, and carbohydrates in the cucumber rhizosphere, which promoted the growth of cucumber plants under a low-nitrogen stress condition. The results contribute to understanding the biological function of gene amtB, revealing the regulatory role of the strain GXGL-4A on cucumber rhizosphere nitrogen metabolism and laying a theoretical foundation for the development of efficient nitrogen-fixing bacterial agents for sustainable agricultural production. Cultured meat is emerging as a sustainable alternative to conventional animal agriculture, with scaffolds playing a central role in supporting cellular attachment, growth, and tissue maturation. This review focuses on the development of gel-based hybrid biomaterials that meet the dual requirements of biocompatibility and food safety. We explore recent advances in the use of naturally derived gel-forming polymers such as gelatin, chitosan, cellulose, alginate, and plant-based proteins as the structural backbone for edible scaffolds. Particular attention is given to the integration of food-grade functional additives into hydrogel-based scaffolds. These include nanocellulose, dietary fibers, modified starches, polyphenols, and enzymatic crosslinkers such as transglutaminase, which enhance mechanical stability, rheological properties, and cell-guidance capabilities. Rather than focusing on fabrication methods or individual case studies, this review emphasizes the material-centric design strategies for building scalable, printable, and digestible gel scaffolds suitable for cultured meat production. By systemically evaluating the role of each component in structural reinforcement and biological interaction, this work provides a comprehensive frame work for designing next-generation edible scaffold systems. Nonetheless, the field continues to face challenges, including structural optimization, regulatory validation, and scale-up, which are critical for future implementation. Ultimately, hybrid gel-based scaffolds are positioned as a foundational technology for advancing the functionality, manufacturability, and consumer readiness of cultured meat products, distinguishing this work from previous reviews. Unlike previous reviews that have focused primarily on fabrication techniques or tissue engineering applications, this review provides a uniquely food-centric perspective by systematically evaluating the compositional design of hybrid hydrogel-based scaffolds with edibility, scalability, and consumer acceptance in mind. Through a comparative analysis of food-safe additives and naturally derived biopolymers, this review establishes a framework that bridges biomaterials science and food engineering to advance the practical realization of cultured meat products. Soil degradation resulting from intensive agricultural practices, the excessive use of agrochemicals, and climate-induced stresses has significantly impaired soil fertility, disrupted microbial diversity, and reduced crop productivity. Plant growth-promoting bacteria (PGPB) represent a sustainable biological approach to restoring degraded soils by modulating plant physiology and soil function through diverse molecular mechanisms. PGPB synthesizes indole-3-acetic acid (IAA) to stimulate root development and nutrient uptake and produce ACC deaminase, which lowers ethylene accumulation under stress, mitigating growth inhibition. They also enhance nutrient availability by releasing phosphate-solubilizing enzymes and siderophores that improve iron acquisition. In parallel, PGPB activates jasmonate and salicylate pathways, priming a systemic resistance to biotic and abiotic stress. Through quorum sensing, biofilm formation, and biosynthetic gene clusters encoding antibiotics, lipopeptides, and VOCs, PGPB strengthen rhizosphere colonization and suppress pathogens. These interactions contribute to microbial community recovery, an improved soil structure, and enhanced nutrient cycling. This review synthesizes current evidence on the molecular and physiological mechanisms by which PGPB enhance soil restoration in degraded agroecosystems, highlighting their role beyond biofertilization as key agents in ecological rehabilitation. It examines advances in nutrient mobilization, stress mitigation, and signaling pathways, based on the literature retrieved from major scientific databases, focusing on studies published in the last decade. Carnitine (CA) is a chiral amino acid and mostly comes from meat and dairy products. CA cannot be found in fruits, vegetables, or other plants, so vegetarians are deficient in CA. CA exists in the form of D-carnitine (D-CA) and L-carnitine (L-CA); only L-carnitine has biological activity. L-CA promotes the oxidation of fatty acids and then causes the effect of weight loss. In this study, the fluorescence probe was established by using graphene oxide-modified cadmium telluride (CdTe) QDs (GO-CdTe QDs) for the chiral recognition of carnitine enantiomers. GO-CdTe QDs present fluorescence. D-CA enhances the fluorescence spectral signal of the GO-CdTe QDs system, while L-CA weakens its spectral signal. Based on this phenomenon, we determined D-carnitine and L-carnitine. Full article

Peanut productivity is severely restricted by soil salinization and associated nutrient deficiency in saline soil. The quinoa–peanut relay intercrop pattern (IP) is a promising planting system that utilizes the biological advantages of quinoa to improve soil ecological functions and productivity. However, the effects of IP on soil physicochemical and biological properties and the yield formation of the combined peanut crop are still unclear. Two-year field experiments in coastal saline soil were conducted to explore the effects of IP on peanut growth and pod yield, soil physicochemical properties, and microbial community characterization at different growth stages of peanut based on the traditional monocrop pattern (MP). The results show that IP promoted peanut pod yield, although there was the disadvantage of plant growth at an early stage. Soil water content, electrical conductivity (EC), and Na+ content in the peanut rhizosphere were lower, whereas K+, NH4+, and total organic carbon (TOC) contents were higher in IP systems at both the vegetative and reproductive stages. The pod yield of peanut was significantly negatively correlated with soil EC and Na+ contents at the vegetative stage, but positively correlated with K+, NO3, NH4+, PO43−, and TOC contents at the reproductive stage. IP rebuilt the composition of the soil bacterial community in the peanut rhizosphere and increased the abundance of the beneficial bacterial community, which were positively correlated with soil TOC, K+, NH4+, NO3, and PO43− contents. These findings suggest that IP can increase peanut pod yield through optimizing soil physicochemical properties and microbial community composition, and it is a promising planting system for improving agricultural production in coastal saline lands. Proteins play pivotal roles in safeguarding plants against numerous biotic and abiotic stresses. Understanding their biological functions and mechanisms of action is essential for advancing plant biology, agriculture, and biotechnology. This review considers the diversity and potential applications of plant defense proteins including pathogenesis-related (PR) proteins, chitinases, glucanases, protease inhibitors, lectins, and antimicrobial peptides. Recent advances, such as the omics technologies, have enabled the discovery of new plant defense proteins and regulatory networks that govern plant defense responses and unveiled numerous roles of plant defense proteins in stress perception, signal transduction, and immune priming. The molecular affinities and enzymatic activities of plant defense proteins are essential for their defense functions. Applications of plant defense proteins span agriculture, biotechnology, and medicine, including the development of resistant crop varieties, bio-based products, biopharmaceuticals, and functional foods. Future research directions include elucidating the structural bases of defense protein functions, exploring protein interactions with ligands and other proteins, and engineering defense proteins for enhanced efficacy. Overall, this review illuminates the significance of plant defense proteins against biotic stresses in plant biology and biotechnology, emphasizing their potential for sustainable agriculture and environmental management. Characteristic manifestations of skin aging, due to either intrinsic or extrinsic factors, such as ultraviolet (UV) radiation and oxidative stress, include cell senescence, alterations in collagen and elastin networks, and melanogenesis disorders. Natural products are considered a rich source of anti-aging molecules. Accordingly, the screening of a plant extract library from the Greek flora for a panel of biological activities related to skin aging is presented herein. In particular, 52 plant materials extracted using Accelerated Solvent Extraction (ASE) and Supercritical Fluid Extraction (SFE) were assessed for their effects on (1) human skin cell viability, (2) antioxidant activity—using both cell-free and cell-based methods—(3) photoprotective capacity, and (4) interference with collagenase, elastase, and tyrosinase, as well as with proteasomal and lysosomal activities of human skin cells. In vivo phenotypic screens on Danio rerio (zebrafish) embryos were also used for assessing melanogenesis. Many active extracts were identified, some of them for the first time, and others in agreement with previous reports. In general, ASE extracts exhibited higher activities than SFE ones. Seven extracts showed multiple activities, being highly effective in at least four different assays. These data support the potential use of these extracts against skin aging in medicinal and cosmetic applications. Full article

Monoculture plantation systems face increasing challenges in sustaining ecosystem multifunctionality (EMF) under intensive management and climate change, with long-term functional trajectories remaining poorly understood. Although biodiversity–EMF relationships are well-documented in natural forests, the drivers of multifunctionality in managed plantations, particularly age-dependent dynamics, require further investigation. This study examines how stand development influences EMF in Castanopsis hystrix L. plantations, a dominant subtropical timber species in China, by assessing six ecosystem functions (carbon stocks, wood production, nutrient cycling, decomposition, symbiosis, and water regulation) of six forest ages (6, 10, 15, 25, 30, and 34 years). The results demonstrate substantial age-dependent functional enhancement, with carbon stocks and wood production increasing by 467% and 2016% in mature stand (34 year) relative to younger stand (6 year). Nutrient cycling and water regulation showed intermediate gains (6% and 23%). Structural equation modeling identified plant diversity and microbial community composition as direct primary drivers. Tree biomass profiles emerged as the strongest biological predictors of EMF (p < 0.01), exceeding abiotic factors. These findings highlight that C. hystrix plantations can achieve high multifunctionality through stand maturation facilitated by synergistic interactions between plants and microbes. Conservation of understory vegetation and soil biodiversity represents a critical strategy for sustaining EMF, providing a science-based framework for climate-resilient plantation management in subtropical regions. Sustainable agriculture and food security are challenged by the indiscriminate use of synthetic nitrogen (N2) fertilizers, inefficient water management, and land degradation. Hydroponic cultivation uses nutrient-rich aqueous media and is a climate-resilient and resource-efficient alternative to traditional farming methods, whose dependence on synthetic N2 fertilizers reduces their long-term sustainability. Biological nitrogen fixation (BNF), which is mediated by diazotrophs that reduce atmospheric N2 to plant-available ammonium, has emerged as a sustainable alternative to synthetic N2 input in hydroponic systems. This review discusses the integration of BNF into hydroponic systems by exploring the functional diversity of diazotrophs, root–microbe interactions, and environmental constraints. It further highlights recent advances in strain improvement, microbial consortia development, nitrogenase protection, and genome editing tools, novel bioformulation strategies to enhance microbial compatibility with hydroponic nutrient regimes, and omics-based tools for the real-time assessment of N2 fixation and microbial functionality. Key challenges, such as microbial leaching, nitrate-induced inhibition of nitrogenase activity, and the absence of standardized biostimulant protocols, are discussed. Case studies on staple crops have demonstrated enhanced NUE and yield productivity following diazotroph applications. This review concludes with future perspectives on synthetic biology, regulatory policies, and omics-based tools for the real-time assessment of N2 fixation and microbial functionality. Full article

Methods: This article systematically analyzes the main steps of the spray-drying microencapsulation process and discusses traditional and innovative wall materials, including natural polymers (polysaccharides and proteins), as well as new raw material sources (e.g., yeast cells, canola and pea protein isolates, and hemicelluloses). It also examines the potential of these systems for the stimulated release of active ingredients. Results: This review provides a comprehensive overview of the main stages of the spray-drying process and critically examines both conventional (e.g., maltodextrin and gum Arabic) and innovative wall materials (e.g., plant-based proteins and food industry by-products). Studies show that using different wall materials can achieve high encapsulation efficiency, improve the stability of biologically active substances, and control their release. Various compounds have been successfully microencapsulated—polyphenols, essential oils, carotenoids, fatty acids, and vitamins—protecting them from oxidation, light, and temperature. The review identifies key factors that can enhance product quality, increase encapsulation yield, and reduce processing costs and energy input—offering meaningful insights for optimizing the microencapsulation process. Conclusions: Spray-drying-based microencapsulation is an advanced technology that effectively protects sensitive active ingredients and allows for wider industrial food, pharmaceutical, and cosmetic applications. In the future, more attention is expected to be paid to personalized formulations, stimulated release systems, and sustainable wall materials from by-products. Full article

Humic acid (HA), a major component of soil organic matter, is a naturally occurring macromolecule formed through the decomposition of plant and microbial residues. Its molecular structure comprises functional groups such as carboxyl, phenolic, hydroxyl, and carbonyl functional groups, which enable HA to interact with soil particles, nutrients, and biological systems. These interactions significantly contribute to soil fertility and overall plant productivity. Functionally, HA enhances soil health by increasing cation exchange capacity, improving water retention, and promoting the formation and stabilization of soil aggregates. In addition to its role in soil conditioning, HA is essential in mitigating plant stress. It achieves this by modulating antioxidant enzyme activity, stabilizing cellular membranes, and alleviating the adverse effects of abiotic stressors such as salinity, drought, and heavy metal toxicity. This review highlights the structural characteristics of HA, its structure-based functions, and the mechanisms involved in plant stress alleviation. Additionally, we explore how HA can be modified through physical, chemical, and biological approaches to enhance its agronomic performance. These modifications are designed to improve HA agronomic efficiency by increasing nutrient bioavailability, reducing environmental losses through minimized leaching and volatilization, and supporting sustainable agricultural practices. Overall, this review underscores the multifaceted roles of HA in promoting plant resilience to environmental stress, highlighting its potential as a key agent in the development of sustainable and eco-friendly crop production systems. Common vetch (Vicia sativa L.) is a legume widely used both as a grain and as forage due to its high protein content, which provides considerable nutritional enrichment for livestock feed. As a cover crop, it has the potential to fix atmospheric nitrogen through symbiosis with rhizobia, contributing to sustainable agricultural systems by enhancing soil fertility and reducing the dependence on chemical fertilizers. Although much research has been focused on optimizing Rhizobium inoculants to enhance biological nitrogen fixation (BNF) in leguminous crops, the role of host plant genetic diversity in BNF has been underexplored. This study analyses a collection of V. sativa genotypes to evaluate their BNF by assaying their nodulation capacity, nodule nitrogenase activity, nitrogen fixation potential, and impact on biomass development. Our results reveal large variability in these parameters among the different genotypes, emphasizing the relevance of host legume diversity in the Rhizobium symbiosis. These findings show a direct relationship between nodule biomass development, nitrogen fixation capacity, shoot biomass production, and nitrogen content. However, no correlation was observed for other parameters such as the number of nodules, nitrogenase activity, and shoot nitrogen content. Taken together, these results suggest that selecting genotypes with high BNF capacity could be a promising strategy to improve nitrogen fixation in legume-based agricultural systems. Full article

Millettia speciosa (MS) is a traditional medicinal and edible plant with notable nutritional value and a wide range of biological activities. Recent studies have explored its chemical composition and pharmacological effects, particularly focusing on the potential utilization of its by-products. However, a lack of integrated analysis has limited a comprehensive understanding of its functional value and industrial relevance. This review provides a critical overview of the major bioactive components of MS, such as flavonoids, phenolic acids, alkaloids, saponins, and polysaccharides, and highlights their antioxidant, lipid-lowering, antimicrobial, antidepressant, and immune-regulatory properties. In addition, the nutritional aspects of MS, including its protein, amino acid, and mineral contents, are discussed in detail. Safety evaluations based on existing toxicological and pharmacokinetic studies are also summarized. Furthermore, this work outlines the current and emerging applications of MS and its by-products in key industries: in the food sector as functional ingredients and nutritional supplements, in agriculture as biofertilizers and animal feed additives, and in cosmetics for their antioxidative and skin-protective effects. Finally, the review identifies current challenges and prospects for the industrial development of MS-based products across multiple domains. Full article
