The plant-based oil industry contributes significantly to food waste/by-products in the form of underutilized biomass, including oil pomace, cake/meal, seeds, peels, wastewater, etc. These waste/by-products contain a significant quantity of nutritious and bioactive compounds (phenolics, lignans, flavonoids, dietary fiber, proteins, and essential minerals) with proven health-promoting effects. The utilization of them as natural, cost-effective, and food-grade functional ingredients in novel food formulations holds considerable potential. This review highlights the potential of waste/by-products generated during plant-based oil processing as a promising source of bioactive compounds and covers systematic research, including recent studies focusing on innovative extraction and processing techniques. It also sheds light on their promising potential for valorization as food ingredients, with a focus on specific examples of food fortification. Furthermore, the potential for value creation in the food industry is emphasized, taking into account associated challenges and limitations, as well as future perspectives. Overall, the current information suggests that the valorization of plant-based oil industry waste and by-products for use in the food industry could substantially reduce malnutrition and poverty, generate favorable health outcomes, mitigate environmental concerns, and enhance economic profit in a sustainable way by developing health-promoting, environmentally sustainable food systems. This research demonstrates the potential of plant waste cellulose as a remarkable biomaterial for multilayer tablet formulation. Rice husks (RC) and orange peels (OC) were used as cellulose sources and characterized for a comparison with commercial cellulose. The FTIR characterization shows minimal differences in their chemical components, making them equivalent for compression into tablets containing ibuprofen. TGA measurements indicate that the RC is slightly better for multilayer formulations due to its favorable degradation profile. This is corroborated by an XRD analysis that reveals its higher crystalline fraction (~55%). The use of a heat press at combined high pressures and temperatures allows the layer-by-layer tablet formulation of ibuprofen, taken as a model drug. Additionally, this study compares the release profile of three types of tablets compressed with cellulose: mixed (MIX), two-layer (BL), and three-layer (TL). The MIX tablet shows a profile like that of conventional ibuprofen tablets. Although both BL and TL tablets significantly reduce their release percentage in the first hours, the TL ones have proven to be better in the long run. In fact, formulations made of extracted cellulose sandwiching ibuprofen display a zero-order release profile and prolonged release since the drug release amounts to ~70% after 120 h. This makes the TL formulations ideal for maintaining the therapeutic effect of the drug and improving patients’ wellbeing and compliance while reducing adverse effects. Full article

Restaurants and open markets generate considerable quantities of organic waste. Converting these residues into poultry feed ingredients offers a sustainable disposal route. This study aimed to evaluate the nutritional and sensory viability of a novel feed complement formulated from Bonito fish meal (Sarda chiliensis chiliensis) and Única potato peel flour (Solanum tuberosum L. cv. Única). This study was conducted in three phases: (i) production and nutritional characterization of the two by-product flours; (ii) formulation of a 48:52 (w/w) blend, incorporated into broiler diets at 15%, 30%, and 45% replacement levels over a 7-week trial divided into starter (3 weeks), grower (3 weeks), and finisher (1 week) phases; and (iii) assessment of growth performance (weight gain, final weight, and feed conversion ratio), followed by a sensory evaluation of the resulting meat using a Check-All-That-Apply (CATA) analysis. The Bonito fish meal exhibited 50.78% protein, while the Única potato peel flour was rich in carbohydrates (74.08%). The final body weights of broiler chickens ranged from 1872.1 to 1886.4 g across treatments, and the average feed conversion ratio across all groups was 0.65. Replacing up to 45% of commercial feed with the formulated complement did not significantly affect growth performance (p > 0.05). Sensory analysis revealed that meat from chickens receiving 15% and 45% substitution levels was preferred in terms of aroma and taste, whereas the control group was rated higher in appearance. These findings suggest that the formulated feed complement may represent a viable poultry-feed alternative with potential sensory and economic benefits, supporting future circular-economy strategies. This study explores the sustainable valorization of Annurca apple by-products by examining the polyphenolic content and antioxidant activity of peel, flesh, and core at two ripening stages. Ripening significantly enhanced the concentration of bioactive compounds, particularly in the peel, where total polyphenols increased from 124.4 to 423.3 mg of CAE/100 g FW, flavonoids from 18.2 to 51.3 mg of quercetin equivalents, and ortho-diphenols from 11.9 to 36.1 mg of CAE. The flesh and core showed more moderate increases. Antioxidant activity, assessed using five in vitro assays (DPPH, ABTS, FRAP, TAC, and H2O2), was consistently highest in the peel, especially in the ABTS assay. Although the flesh had fewer phenolics, it showed a 1.5-fold increase during ripening, accompanied by improved antioxidant performance. The core also proved notable antioxidant potential, particularly in ripe samples. UHPLC-MS/MS analysis identified 11 phenolic compounds, showing tissue- and ripening-specific distribution. SDS-PAGE revealed a ripening-related increase in Thaumatin-like Protein 1a (TLP1a), especially in the core and flesh. Its association with tissues showing high antioxidant ability suggests a possible role in enhancing the bioactivity of polyphenol-rich extracts. From an agri-food waste valorization perspective, the peel and core represent promising sources of bioactive compounds for developing functional foods and nutraceuticals. Full article

Tomato processing waste (TPW) represents a valuable but underutilized by-product of the food industry with potential for valorization within bioeconomy models. This study investigated the chemical composition, antioxidant profile, and sanitary safety of TPW, analyzing the whole TPW; its fractions (peels and seeds) and oil are obtained from TPW seeds. All samples showed contaminant levels within regulatory limits, confirming their safety for further applications. Various drying methods (air-drying at 70 °C and at 50 °C, lyophilization and vacuum drying) and grinding intensities were evaluated to determine their impact on TPW bioactive compounds retention and organoleptic characteristics. TPW exhibited valuable nutritional properties, particularly high protein and dietary fiber content while TPW oil was characterized with high monounsaturated fatty acid content. Results demonstrated that drying method and particle size significantly influenced the yield of bioactive compound and organoleptic properties, with either lyophilization or vacuum drying and finer milling generally enhancing the recovery of polyphenols, β-carotene, and lycopene and improving color intensity. This research provides the first characterization of the TPW obtained from Croatian indigenous tomato varieties, establishing a scientific foundation for its sustainable valorization and, in broader terms, supporting circular economy objectives and contributing to more resource-efficient food systems. This study proposes an integrated framework for sustainable tropical agriculture by combining biochemical waste valorization with spatial carbon footprint estimation in ‘Phulae’ pineapple production. Peel and eye residues from fresh-cut processing were enzymatically converted into rare sugar, achieving average conversion efficiencies of 35.28% for peel and 37.51% for eyes, with a benefit–cost ratio of 1.56 and an estimated unit cost of USD 0.17 per gram. A complementary zero-waste pathway produced functional gummy products using vinegar fermented from pineapple eye waste, with the preferred formulation scoring a mean of 4.32 out of 5 on a sensory scale with 158 untrained panelists. For spatial carbon modeling, the Bare Land Referenced Algorithm (BRAH) and Otsu thresholding were applied to multi-temporal Sentinel-2 and THEOS imagery to estimate plantation age, which strongly correlated with field-measured emissions (r = 0.996). This enabled scalable mapping of plot-level greenhouse gas emissions, yielding an average footprint of 0.2304 kg CO2 eq. per kilogram of fresh pineapple at the plantation gate. Together, these innovations form a replicable model that aligns tropical fruit supply chains with circular economy goals and carbon-related trade standards. The framework supports waste traceability, resource efficiency, and climate accountability using accessible, data-driven tools suitable for smallholder contexts. By demonstrating practical value addition and spatially explicit carbon monitoring, this study shows how integrated circular and geospatial strategies can advance sustainability and market competitiveness for the ‘Phulae’ pineapple industry and similar perennial crop systems. Beetroot peel, an underutilised by-product of the food industry, has significant potential for valorisation due to its high content of bioactive compounds and natural pigments. This study aimed to sustainably reintroduce beetroot peel into the food chain by enriching the nutritional value of dehydrated apple snacks. Five experimental formulations of apple slices were developed: dipped in 5% RBPP in water, dipped in 10% RBPP in water, dipped in 5% RBPP in 50% lemon juice, dipped in 10% RBPP in 50% lemon juice all seasoned with cinnamon powder, and a control formulation. The biochemical analysis showed that the total phenolic content (2780.01 ± 68.38 mg GAE/100 g DM) and antioxidant activity of apple snacks significantly increased (503.96 ± 1.83 µmol TE/g DM). Sensory evaluation indicated that snacks with beetroot peel powder and lemon juice achieved the highest scores in colour, flavour, and acceptability. These results demonstrate that the valorisation of beetroot peel has the potential to reduce agro-industrial waste and also enhance the nutritional and functional quality of apple snacks. It is recommended that beetroot peel be further explored as a cost-effective natural ingredient to develop healthier, value-added snack products within a circular economy framework. Full article

This paper presents the assessment of the possibility of ammonia adsorption on biochars from banana peels, chemically activated with potassium hydroxide (KOH) at different temperatures. The obtained materials were characterized in detail using a number of analytical techniques, including nitrogen adsorption (BET), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), elemental analysis (CHNS), thermal analysis (TG, DTG, DTA), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR), Raman spectroscopy, Boehm titration method and biochar surface pH. They revealed a largely developed microporous structure and a large specific surface area, ranging from 1134 to 2332 m2 g−1. The adsorption tests against ammonia in the gas phase showed a large adsorption capacity of the materials, up to 5.94 mmol g−1 at 0 °C and 3.83 mmol g−1 at 20 °C. The adsorption properties of the obtained biochars were confirmed to be significantly influenced by the surface chemistry (presence of the acidic functional groups). The research results indicate that the waste-based biomass, such as banana peels, can be an ecological and economical raw material for the production of highly effective adsorbents, useful in the removal of ammonia and other toxic gases polluting the environment. Chemically demethoxylated and Ca-cross-linked orange-peel waste was engineered as a biosorbent for Mn(II) removal from water. A three-factor Box–Behnken design (biosorbent dose 3–10 g L−1, initial Mn2+ 100–300 mg L−1, contact time 3–8 h; pH 5.5 ± 0.1, 25 °C) required only 16 runs to locate the optimum (10 g L−1, 100 mg L−1, 8 h), at which the material removed 94.8% ± 0.3% manganese removal under the optimized conditions (10 g L−1, 100 mg L−1, 8 h, pH 5.5) of dissolved manganese and reached a Langmuir capacity of 29.7 mg g−1. Equilibrium data fitted the Freundlich (R2 = 0.968) and Sips (R2 = 0.969) models best, indicating a heterogeneous surface, whereas kinetic screening confirmed equilibrium within 6 h. FTIR and SEM–EDX verified abundant surface –COO/–OH groups and showed Mn deposits that partially replaced residual Ca, supporting an ion-exchange component in the uptake mechanism. A preliminary cost analysis (<USD 10 kg−1) and > 90% regeneration efficiency over three cycles highlight the economic and environmental promise of this modified agro-waste for polishing Mn-laden effluents. Biodrying and composting are aerobic processes to treat and stabilize organic solid waste, but biodrying involves a shorter process time and does not require the addition of water. The resulting biodried material (BM) is mainly used as an energy source in cement production or in municipal solid waste incineration with energy recovery, but when obtained from agricultural or agroindustrial organic waste, it could also be used as a soil amendment, such as compost (CO). In this study, the phytotoxicity of BM compared to CO, both made from organic wastes (orange peel, mulch and grass), was evaluated on seed germination and growth (for 90 days) of lettuce (Lactuca sativa L.) seedlings on treatments prepared from mixtures of BM and soil, soil (100%) and a mixture of CO and soil. The germination index (GI%) was higher for BM extracts (200 g/L) than for CO extracts (68% vs. 53%, respectively). According to their dry weight, lettuce grew more on the CO mixture (16.5 g) than on the BM (5.4–7.4 g), but both materials far exceeded the soil values (0.15 g). The absence of phytotoxicity suggests that BM acts as a soil amendment, improving soil structure and providing nutrients to the soil. Therefore, biodrying is a quick and low-cost bioprocess to obtain a soil improver. Full article

The quality and freshness of fruits and vegetables are critical factors in consumer acceptance and are significantly affected during transport and storage. This study aimed to evaluate the quality of greenhouse-grown tomatoes stored for 24 days by combining non-destructive image analysis, spectrophotometric assays (including total phenolic content and antioxidant and antiradical activity assessments), and attenuated total reflectance–Fourier transform infrared (ATR-FTIR) spectroscopy. Additionally, water activity, moisture content, total soluble solids, texture, and color were evaluated. Most physicochemical changes occurred between days 14 and 17, without major impact on overall fruit quality. A progressive transition in peel hue from orange to dark orange, and increased surface irregularity of their textural image were noted. Moreover, the combined use of instrumental and image analyses results via multivariate analysis allowed the clear discrimination of tomatoes according to storage days. In this sense, tomato samples were effectively classified by ATR-FTIR spectral bands, linked to carotenoids, phenolics, and polysaccharides. Machine learning (ML) models, including Random Forest and Gradient Boosting, were trained on image-derived features and accurately predicted shelf life and quality traits, achieving R2 values exceeding 0.9. The findings demonstrate the effectiveness of combining imaging, spectroscopy, and ML for non-invasive tomato quality monitoring and support the development of predictive tools to improve postharvest handling and reduce food waste. The Mediterranean region is increasingly confronted with intersecting environmental, agricultural, and socio-economic challenges, including biowaste accumulation, soil degradation, and high dependency on imported fossil fuels. Biomethane, a renewable substitute for natural gas, offers a strategic solution that aligns with the region’s need for sustainable energy transition and circular resource management. This review examines the current state of biomethane production in the Mediterranean area, with a focus on anaerobic digestion (AD) technologies, feedstock availability, policy drivers, and integration into the circular bioeconomy (CBE) framework. Emphasis is placed on the valorisation of regionally abundant feedstocks such as olive pomace, citrus peel, grape marc, cactus pear (Opuntia ficus-indica) residues, livestock manure, and the Organic Fraction of Municipal Solid Waste (OFMSW). The multifunctionality of AD—producing renewable energy and nutrient-rich digestate—is highlighted for its dual role in reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and restoring soil health, especially in areas threatened by desertification such as Sicily (Italy), Spain, Malta, and Greece. The review also explores emerging innovations in biogas upgrading, nutrient recovery, and digital monitoring, along with the role of Renewable Energy Directive III (RED III) and national biomethane strategies in scaling up deployment. Case studies and decentralised implementation models underscore the socio-technical feasibility of biomethane systems across rural and insular territories. Despite significant potential, barriers such as feedstock variability, infrastructural gaps, and policy fragmentation remain. The paper concludes with a roadmap for research and policy to advance biomethane as a pillar of Mediterranean climate resilience, energy autonomy and sustainable agriculture within a circular bioeconomy paradigm. In alignment with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production) and 13 (Climate Action), this research explores the sustainable valorization of mangosteen peels into mangosteen peel powder (MPP), a value-added product with pharmaceutical properties. Mangosteen peels are an abundant agricultural waste in Thailand. This study evaluates six MPP production schemes, each employing different drying methods. Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) is utilized to assess the global warming potential (GWP) of these schemes, and the quality of the MPP produced is also compared. The results show that a combination of frozen storage and freeze-drying (scheme 4) has the highest GWP (1091.897 kgCO2eq) due to substantial electricity usage, whereas a combination of frozen storage and sun-drying (scheme 5) has the lowest GWP (0.031 kgCO2eq) but is prone to microbial contamination. Frozen storage without coarse grinding, combined with hot-air drying (scheme 6), is identified as the optimal scheme in terms of GWP (11.236 kgCO2eq) and product quality. Due to the lack of an onsite hot-air-drying facility, two transportation strategies are integrated into scheme 6 for scenarios A and B. These transportation strategies include transporting mangosteen peels from orchards to a facility in another province or transporting a mobile hot-air-drying unit to the orchards. The analysis indicates that scenario B is more favorable both operationally and environmentally, due to its lower emissions. This research is the first to comparatively assess the GWP of different MPP production schemes using LCA. Furthermore, it aligns with the growing trend in international trade which places greater emphasis on environmentally friendly production processes. Full article

This research presents a novel, sustainable, and eco-friendly method for the rapid green synthesis of nanoparticles with antibacterial properties. This method employs steam distillation to extract reducing and stabilizing agents from orange peel waste, followed by ultrasound-assisted synthesis. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first reported integration of these two techniques for nanoparticle production. The extracted materials were then subjected to rigorous characterization through a combination of analytical techniques, including FTIR, HPLC, and TEM. These analytical approaches enabled a comprehensive analysis of the synthesized NPs, revealing their size distribution within the range of 1.5 to 14 nm. Among the synthesized nanomaterials, AgNPs exhibited the most potent antibacterial activity, with statistically significant minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) of 16 ppm for E. coli ATCC and 32 ppm for resistant E. coli and E. faecalis strains. This study underscored the promise of valorizing citrus waste for nanomaterial synthesis and introduced a novel, scalable methodology for producing bioactive nanoparticles, promoting a more sustainable technology for this purpose. Notably, this research aligns with United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 12, which promotes responsible consumption and production by transforming organic waste into high-value functional nanomaterials for biomedical and environmental applications. There is a high demand for the development of new carriers for pharmaceutical forms for human, veterinary, and animal-feeding use. One of the solutions might be bioactive compound-loading pellets for animal forage. The aim of the work was to assess the physical and sensory properties of forage with the addition of onion peel and off-spec onions as a source of quercetin. The feed was prepared using an expanding process (thermal–mechanical expanding process). Quercetin content was evaluated in raw onion and in final-product feed mixture samples (before and after expanding, and pelleting). The obtained feed was subjected to sensory analysis, testing for expanded pellet uniformity, water absorption index (WAI), the angle of a slide, and antioxidant activity. The results confirmed a high recovery of the quercetin after the expanding process (approximately 80%), and a significantly reduced intensity of onion odor, which was confirmed compared to the non-expanded onion, which is beneficial. Furthermore, digital and optical microscopy were applied for structure analysis. Microscopic imaging results confirmed that the onion structures were visible in the whole length of feed material and analyzed cross-sections. The results can be an introduction to further research on developing products that use the expanding and pelleting process to exploit the peel and off-spec onions, as well as other waste raw materials.
