It is well-established that principal leadership significantly influences student learning in developed countries, yet much less is known about how leadership practices manifest in complex systems like China’s, where rapid modernization intersects with deep-rooted educational traditions. In particular, Chinese principals face multiple challenges in balancing the implementation of educational reform policies, high parental expectations, and their own educational ideology, all within limited resources. The current study examines these challenges in Shenzhen, a city which typically manifests them through its rapid development. Specifically, we took a phenomenographic approach and interviewed the principals and staff from five prestigious primary schools to extract the key components behind the diverse school leaders’ styles and practices. Results showed that, the Chinese leadership practice model consists of five key components: mission setting, infrastructure reconstruction, teacher development, learning improvement, and educators’ networking. Although the first four components in this model align with established theories in developed countries, networking was identified as a distinctive and critical element for securing resources and fostering collaboration. These findings may broaden the scope of leadership theories and underscore the need to contextualize leadership practices based on local challenges and dynamics. It also offers practical insights for school leaders on navigating challenges to improve teacher and student outcomes. Full article

Participation in organized sport is widely encouraged for youth development, yet positive outcomes are not guaranteed. Parents play a pivotal role in shaping young athletes’ experiences, requiring emotional support, interpersonal skills, and self-regulation. This study examines the meanings parents attribute to their children’s sports participation and how young athletes construct their experiences under parental and coaching influences. An interpretive phenomenological methodology involved semi-structured interviews with coaches, focus groups with parents, and open-ended questionnaires to young athletes. Seventeen players (M = 11.2 years, SD = 0.59), nineteen parents (M = 47.6 years, SD = 3.61), and two coaches from the same football club volunteered to participate in the study. Participants were selected through purposive sampling to ensure a homogeneous experience. The findings reveal that parental involvement balances support and pressure, while trust-building between parents and coaches significantly impacts the athletes’ experiences. The evolving role of technology and the importance of social dynamics within teams also emerged as critical factors. Intrinsic motivation, fostering emotional bonding through the sport, and adopting a developmental rather than purely competitive framework were emphasized factors identified as supporting positive youth sport experiences. These findings offer insights into how interconnected relationships among parents, coaches, and athletes influence children’s sports engagement and development. Full article

This study addresses fairness in machine learning for student academic performance prediction using the UCI Student Performance dataset. We comparatively evaluate logistic regression, Random Forest, and XGBoost, integrating the Synthetic Minority Oversampling Technique (SMOTE) to address class imbalance and 5-fold cross-validation for robust model training. A comprehensive fairness analysis is conducted, considering sensitive attributes such as gender, school type, and socioeconomic factors, including parental education (Medu and Fedu), cohabitation status (Pstatus), and family size (famsize). Using the AIF360 library, we compute the demographic parity difference (DP) and Equalized Odds Difference (EO) to assess model biases across diverse subgroups. Our results demonstrate that XGBoost achieves high predictive performance (accuracy: 0.789; F1 score: 0.803) while maintaining low bias for socioeconomic attributes, offering a balanced approach to fairness and performance. A sensitivity analysis of bias mitigation strategies further enhances the study, advancing equitable artificial intelligence in education by incorporating socially relevant factors. Full article

Background: Parents of children with type 1 diabetes play a key role in managing their child’s self-management, which can be stressful and burdensome. High involvement can lead to reactions such as emotional, cognitive, and physical exhaustion in parents. Understanding parents’ psychosocial impact due to their child’s disease is crucial for the family’s overall well-being. The purpose of this study was to describe stress and burden experienced by parents in families with children living with type 1 diabetes. Methods: This study utilized a qualitative approach, analyzing interviews with 16 parents of children aged 10 to 17 years living with T1D through qualitative content analysis. The data collection occurred between January and February 2025. Results: Managing a child’s Type 1 diabetes can be tough on family relationships, affecting how partners interact, intimacy, and sibling relationships. The constant stress and worry might leave parents feeling exhausted, unable to sleep, and struggling to think clearly, on top of the pain of losing a normal everyday life. The delicate balance between allowing a child with type 1 diabetes to be independent and maintaining control over their self-management renders these challenges even more demanding for the parents. Conclusions: Parents’ experiences highlight the need for robust support systems, including dependable school environments, trustworthy technical devices, reliable family and friends, and accessible healthcare guidance. These elements are essential not only for the child’s health and well-being but also for alleviating the emotional and practical burdens parents face. Full article

In order to increase the toughness of poly(hexamethylene furandicarboxylate) (PHF) without severely compromising its strength at break, novel biobased poly(hexamethylene furandicarboxylate-co-hexamethylene thiophenedicarboxylate) (PHFTh) copolyesters and their parent homopolyesters, PHF and poly(hexamethylene thiophenedicarboxylate), were successfully synthesized through melt polycondensation in this research. Despite the variation in their compositions, all the PHFTh copolyesters exhibited excellent thermal stability. The PHFTh copolyesters were semicrystalline in nature, showing the lowest eutectic melting points and isodimorphism behaviors over the whole composition range. As the hexamethylene thiophenedicarboxylate (HTh) unit content increased, the glass transition temperature of the copolyesters gradually decreased, while the chain mobility was accordingly enhanced. Therefore, the introduction of the HTh unit significantly increased the elongation at break of the PHFTh, achieving a balance between strength and toughness. The biobased PHFTh copolyesters showed tunable thermal behaviors and excellent mechanical properties and may find potential end uses from a practical application viewpoint. Full article

Extended reality (XR)-based rehabilitation is an emerging therapeutic approach that combines real and virtual environments to enhance patient engagement and promote motor and cognitive recovery. Its clinical utility in children with cerebral palsy (CP), particularly regarding gross motor skills, balance, and psychosocial well-being, remains underexplored. This preliminary study aimed to evaluate the potential effects of XR-based rehabilitation on gross motor function, balance, parental stress, and quality of life in children with cerebral palsy. Thirty children with cerebral palsy were randomly assigned to an extended reality training group (XRT, n = 15) or a conventional physical therapy group (CPT, n = 15). Both groups received 30 min sessions, three times per week for 6 weeks. Outcome measures included the Gross Motor Function Measure-88 (GMFM-88), Pediatric Balance Scale (PBS), Functional Independence Measure (FIM), Parenting Stress Index (PSI), and Pediatric Quality of Life Inventory (PedsQL), assessed pre- and post-intervention. A 2 (group) × 2 (time) mixed ANOVA was conducted. The XR group demonstrated improvements in GMFM-88, PBS, and FIM scores, with decreased PSI and increased PedsQL scores. Although most interaction effects were not statistically significant (GMFM-88: η2 = 0.035, p = 0.329; PBS: η2 = 0.043, p = 0.274), a marginal interaction effect was observed for PSI (p = 0.065, η2 = 0.059), suggesting a potential benefit of XR-based rehabilitation in reducing parental stress. This preliminary study indicates that XR-based rehabilitation may provide beneficial trends in motor function and psychosocial health in children with CP, particularly in reducing parental stress. Further studies with larger sample sizes are needed to confirm these findings. Full article

Purposes: This study aims to construct a research framework integrating the theory of human values and Self-Determination Theory (SDT) to examine whether parents’ sport values influence their support for children’s continued participation in balance bike activities in terms of the mediation of participation motivation. Methods: Data were collected from 439 parents whose children participated in balance bike activities using a snowball sampling method. Descriptive statistics and structural equation modeling (SEM) were employed to analyze the relationships among parents’ sport values, participation motivation, and continued participation intention. Results: The findings revealed that parents’ sport values significantly predicted participation motivation, which, in turn, remarkably influenced continued participation intention. Participation motivation fully mediated the relationship between sport values and continued participation intention, supporting SDT’s assumption of motivational internalization and highlighting the crucial role of intrinsic motivation. Background: Several studies document the importance of communicative abilities for children’s development. Especially in recent years verbal communication in preschool children with developmental language disorder (DLD) has been studied, relying heavily on statistical analysis, outcome measures, or/and parents’ reports. Purpose: This explorative study investigates the effects of speech therapy on the development of language and verbal communication skills in preschool children with DLD within their peer group in a day-to-day setting using objective video-documentation. Hypothesis: Speech therapy leads to improvement of language, communication, and possibly to concurrent development of both language and verbal communication skills in preschool children. Methods: Preliminary prospective study to assess language and verbal communications skills of nine preschool children (seven boys, two girls, 4–6 y) with DLD in a speech therapy kindergarten using video recordings over a one-year therapy period. The communicative participation of the members of the peer group was assessed and included the verbal address (Av) and the ratio of “verbal address/verbal reaction” (Av/Rv). Results: The investigation results in evidence for two outcome groups: One group with suspected preferential verbal communication disorders (n = 4) was characterised by a high Av/Rv value, meaning they were scored to have a normal or high verbal address (Av) and a low verbal response (Rv) (predominantly interpersonal communication related disorder). This group showed minimal changes in the short term but demonstrated improvement after 5 years of schooling; thus, pedagogical activities seemed to be particularly effective for these children. The second group showed a balanced Av/Rv ratio (predominantly language related disorder) (n = 5); but after five years they demonstrated a partial need for special school support measures. This group may therefore particularly benefit from speech therapy. Conclusions: The present study clearly shows that even with speech-language therapy, the linguistic ability of DLD-disturbed children does not necessarily develop simultaneously with their communication ability. Rather, the investigations provide evidence for two groups of preschool children with DLD and communication disorder: One group demonstrated a predominantly verbal communication related disorder, where pedagogical intervention might be the more important treatment. The second group showed predominantly DLD, therefore making speech therapy the more effective intervention. In this study, all children expressed their desire to communicate with their peers. To the authors’ best knowledge, this is the first study determining the ability to communicate in a preschool cohort with DLD using characterisation with video documentation in a follow-up for 1 year. Family structure has long been regarded as an important determinant of household saving, yet the empirical evidence for developing economies remains limited. Using the 2018–2022 panels of the China Family Panel Studies (CFPS), a nationwide survey that follows 16,519 households across three waves, the present study investigates how family size, the elderly share, and the child share jointly shape saving behavior. A household fixed effects framework is employed to control for time-invariant heterogeneity, followed by a sequential endogeneity strategy: external-shock instruments are tested and rejected, lagged two-stage least squares implement internal instruments, and a dynamic System-GMM model is estimated to capture saving persistence. Robustness checks include province-by-year fixed effects, inverse probability weighting for attrition, balanced-panel replication, alternative variable definitions, lag structures, and sample filters. Family size raises the saving rate by 4.6 percentage points in the preferred dynamic specification (p < 0.01). The elderly ratio remains insignificant throughout, whereas the child ratio exerts a negative but model-sensitive association. A three-path mediation analysis indicates that approximately 26 percent of the total family size effect operates through scale economy savings on quasi-fixed expenses, 19 percent is offset by resource dilution pressure, and less than 1 percent flows through a precautionary saving channel linked to income volatility. These findings extend the resource dilution literature by quantifying the relative strength of competing mechanisms in a middle-income context and showing that cost-sharing economies dominate child-related dilution for most households. Policy discussion highlights the importance of public childcare subsidies and targeted credit access for rural parents, whose saving capacity is the most constrained by additional children. The study also demonstrates that fixed effects estimates of family structure can be upward-biased unless dynamic saving behavior and internal instruments are considered. Full article

Objectives: The present study evaluated anthropometry Z-scores of exclusively breastfed infants aged 0~6 months and examined their associations with various parent–infant factors. Methods: This cross-sectional study included 383 mother–infant dyads from 10 Chinese cities in the final analyses, under strict inclusion and exclusion criteria. Data were collected by trained investigators using questionnaires covering demographic characteristics, perinatal health, maternal and infant factors during lactation. Nutrient intake was assessed and calculated by 24 h recall. Anthropometric measurements of parents and infants were taken using calibrated instruments, with infant growth assessed via Chinese growth standards. Statistical analyses included correlation and linear mixed-effect models accounting for regional clustering, with variable selection guided by backward elimination step regression. Nonlinear relationships were explored using spline and piecewise regression methods. Results: Over 60% of the mothers had inadequate energy and protein intake. Approximately two-thirds of the participants had fat intakes exceeding the upper limit. Inadequate or excessive gestational weight gain, poor maternal sleep quality, lactational mastitis, higher maternal fat intake and infant gastrointestinal symptoms were associated with lower infant anthropometry Z-scores. A threshold effect was detected between maternal fat intake and infant WAZ, BMI Z, and WLZ. Conclusions: This study found that anthropometry Z-scores of exclusively breastfed infants aged 0–6 months were significantly associated with certain maternal–infant factors and maternal fat intake, emphasizing the need for early intervention on adverse factors and balanced maternal diet nutrition during lactation. In the present study, five novel dexketoprofen amide derivatives with a free carboxyl group in their side chains were synthesized. The in vivo anti-inflammatory potential of dexketoprofen derivatives was evaluated using a carrageenan-induced paw edema model of acute inflammation. Additionally, the local and systemic redox status in rats following acute administration of the compounds was assessed by measuring levels of pro-oxidative markers and the activity of antioxidant enzymes. Among the analyzed molecules, derivatives 2 and 4 exhibited the most potent in vivo anti-inflammatory activity, showing effects comparable to those of the parent compound dexketoprofen. In vitro results revealed that all newly synthesized compounds exhibited low inhibitory activity toward COX-1, whereas only compound 4 showed significant COX-2 inhibition. The stronger binding affinity of derivative 4 for COX-2 in comparison to other tested compounds is likely attributed to its ability to form multiple electrostatic interactions within the enzyme’s active site. Furthermore, compounds 2 and 5 demonstrated efficacy comparable to the parent drug in restoring redox balance, indicating their potential antioxidant properties under acute inflammatory conditions. The findings of this study underscore the therapeutic potential of the novel dexketoprofen amide derivatives as dual-function agents with the capacity to modulate both inflammatory responses and oxidative stress. Individuals with CHARGE syndrome often experience motor delays impacting their balance, flexibility, and hand–eye coordination. Due to the medical complications associated with CHARGE syndrome, 40% of children will not develop functional communication skills and many more will have difficulty with speech and oral communication. Family caregivers play a critical role in the care of children and youths with disabilities, especially CHARGE syndrome. However, there is minimal research on the parental experiences of children and youth with CHARGE syndrome. The purpose of this study was to understand the family caregiver experiences and needs of parents of children and youth with CHARGE syndrome and related disabilities. Six family caregivers of children and youth living with CHARGE syndrome in the United States were interviewed to understand their current quality of life, factors influencing their quality of life, and the coping strategies they use. The interviews were transcribed verbatim and then analyzed using qualitative content analysis. The themes generated from the qualitative analyses of interviews showed that family caregivers experienced significant challenges in their quality of life and faced barriers as they navigated a complex system of care. However, family caregivers described robust approaches such as social support for coping with some of the stresses. Full article

Children’s outdoor physical activity (PA) serves as a crucial mechanism for health development, but its safety is affected by urban space design and management. However, most existing studies focus on isolated risk factors or singular spatial typologies, which lack a comprehensive safety assessment framework. This study aims to construct a safety assessment system for children’s outdoor public activity spaces and explore safety optimization strategies. This study employs a mixed methods approach to systematically analyze 13 outdoor public activity spaces across Shanghai, utilizing NVivo 12 Plus for qualitative coding of the data. Based on the coding results, a questionnaire survey targeting parents of children under 12 years old (with a balanced gender ratio) was designed and administered, yielding 509 valid responses. A 32-indicator assessment system was finally constructed via principal component analysis (PCA). The assessment system encompasses seven dimensions: site facilities (24.0%), spatial conditions (16.1%), site management (13.5%), material conditions (13.0%), service facilities (12.8%), traffic and landscape (10.3%), and ground conditions (10.3%). This study provides a quantitative safety assessment instrument for designing child-friendly urban public activity spaces, which has important implications for improving the public health service system and promoting the construction of healthy cities in the Sustainable Development Goals. Challenge, adventure, and risky play have repeatedly been found to be learning environments that positively shape childhood well-being and development. Extant evidence-based research conveys the physical, cognitive, and socio-emotional growth associated with risky play provision. However, understanding the interplay of risky play, injury, and safety is more nuanced and complex. The goal of this paper is to introduce a tool which allows educators, parents, health practitioners, urban planners, playground designers, certifiers, manufacturers, and inspectors to estimate both the benefit and risk of outdoor play and learning settings, such as playgrounds, adventure parks, or risk-taking activities. One of the key challenges associated with societal risk appetite or risk tolerance has been the inability to quantify the inherent benefits of risk taking in playgrounds and educational settings. Historically, the assessment of ‘benefit–risk’ has been dominated by a zero tolerance of incidents, whether in the workplace or road safety settings. Against this backdrop, if playgrounds and outdoor learning settings are boring, children will go elsewhere to seek thrills and adventure, which may often be manifested in antisocial behaviour. In 2023, ‘benefit–risk’ was formally recognised in the area of sport and recreation by the International Organisation for Standardisation, when it published the ISO 4980:2023 benefit–risk assessment for sport and recreational facilities, activities, and equipment. ISO 4980:2023 is a departure from the traditional view of risk management, in that it presents a perspective of risk which is not limited to framing risk as negative, but rather balances the calculation of positive benefits as well as the risks associated with the activity. Correspondingly, hazardous situations which have zero benefit should be eliminated or mitigated. The tool introduced in this paper offers playground inspectors and educators the ability to measure and assess both the benefit and risk of outdoor playgrounds and educational settings where children play, learn, and flourish. The Yangtze River Delta (YRD) is one of the most important japonica rice planting areas in China. Balancing the resistance, yield, and quality has always been a core issue in rice breeding due to the negative correlation among these three factors, while the broad-spectrum blast resistance gene Piz is closely linked with Hd1, the major gene regulating days to heading (DTH), and a precise combination of their beneficial alleles plays a key role in synchronously improving blast resistance and the regional adaptability of japonica rice in YRD. In this study, using the backcross progeny population derived from backbone parent ZD9471 and W1063, two alleles of Hd1 were identified. Then, through molecular marker-assisted selection combined with Green Super Rice 40K (GSR40K) chip-based screening, six introgression lines (ILs) with two different alleles combinations of Hd1 and Pigm were obtained. An evaluation of the blast resistance, yield, and quality traits showed that compared with the recipient parent, the panicle blast resistance of ILs was significantly enhanced; the grain number per panicle increased consistently with the delaying of the growth period, leading to higher yield in the ILs; the grain quality were synchronously improved. Two representative lines with similar genetic backgrounds but a significantly different regional adaptability, exhibiting a good blast resistance, high yield, and prominent quality were approved and demonstrated promising application prospects.
