In this study, a Z-scheme Ho2InSbO7/Ag3PO4 (HAO) heterojunction photocatalyst was successfully fabricated for the first time by ultrasound-assisted solvothermal method. The structural features, compositional components and morphological characteristics of the synthesized materials were thoroughly characterized by a series of techniques, including X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, Raman spectrum, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy, scanning electron microscopy and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. A comprehensive array of analytical techniques, including ultraviolet-visible diffuse reflectance absorption spectra, photoluminescence spectroscopy, time-resolved photoluminescence spectroscopy, photocurrent testing, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, electron paramagnetic resonance, and ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy, was employed to systematically investigate the optical, chemical, and photoelectronic properties of the materials. Using oxytetracycline (OTC), a representative tetracycline antibiotic, as the target substrate, the photocatalytic activity of the HAO composite was assessed under visible light irradiation. Comparative analyses demonstrated that the photocatalytic degradation capability of the HAO composite surpassed those of its individual components. Notably, during the degradation process, the application of the HAO composite resulted in an impressive removal efficiency of 99.89% for OTC within a span of 95 min, along with a total organic carbon mineralization rate of 98.35%. This outstanding photocatalytic performance could be ascribed to the efficient Z-scheme electron-hole separation system occurring between Ho2InSbO7 and Ag3PO4. Moreover, the adaptability and stability of the HAO heterojunction were thoroughly validated. Through experiments involving the capture of reactive species and electron paramagnetic resonance analysis, the active species generated by HAO were identified as hydroxyl radicals (•OH), superoxide anions (•O2), and holes (h+). This identification provides valuable insights into the mechanisms and pathways associated with the photodegradation of OTC. In conclusion, this research not only elucidates the potential of HAO as an efficient Z-scheme heterojunction photocatalyst but also marks a significant contribution to the advancement of sustainable remediation strategies for OTC contamination. In this work, the structures of the isolated anion and anhydrous and monohydrated sodium salts of alizarin red S (ARS) have been theoretically investigated within the density functional theory framework (B3LYP/6-311++G** calculations). The combination of calculations with the scaled quantum mechanics force field (SQMFF) methodology has allowed the assignment of the experimental infrared spectrum of ARS in the solid phase and the determination of the corresponding force constants. The structural analysis also included the investigation of the NMR and UV-visible spectra of the compound in solution in light of the undertaken quantum chemical calculations, the obtained theoretical data being in good agreement with the corresponding experimental ones. The impact of the presence of the Na+ counterion and hydration water on the properties of the organic ARS fragment was evaluated. Atoms in molecules theory (AIM) analysis was also undertaken to obtain further details on the electronic structure of the investigated species, and the HOMO-LUMO gap was determined to evaluate their relative reactivity. Globally, the results obtained in this work extend the available information on alizarin red S and may also be used for the fast identification of the three studied species of the compound investigated (anhydrous and monohydrated sodium salts and isolated anion). The demand for anion exchange membranes (AEMs) is growing due to their applications in water electrolysis, CO2 reduction conversion and fuel cells, as well as water treatment, driven by the increasing energy demand and the need for a sustainable future. However, current AEMs still face challenges, such as insufficient permeability and stability in strongly acidic or alkaline media, which limit their durability and the sustainability of membrane fabrication. In this study, polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and chitosan (CS) biopolymers are selected for membrane preparation. Zinc oxide (ZnO) and porous organic polymer (POP) nanoparticles are also introduced within the PVA-CS polymer blends to make mixed-matrix membranes (MMMs) with increased OH transport sites. The membranes are characterized based on typical properties for AEM applications, such as thickness, water uptake, KOH uptake, Cl and OH permeability and ion exchange capacity (IEC). The OH transport of the PVA-CS blend is increased by at least 94.2% compared with commercial membranes. The incorporation of non-porous ZnO and porous POP nanoparticles into the polymer blend does not compromise the OH transport properties. On the contrary, ZnO nanoparticles enhance the membrane’s water retention capacity, provide basic surface sites that facilitate hydroxide ion conduction and reinforce the mechanical and thermal stability. In parallel, POPs introduce a highly porous architecture that increases the internal surface area and promotes the formation of continuous hydrated pathways, essential to efficient OH mobility. Furthermore, the presence of POPs also contributes to reinforcing the mechanical integrity of the membrane. Thus, PVA-CS bio-based membranes are a promising alternative to conventional ion exchange membranes for various applications. Full article

Maritime corrosion is a global problem often retarded through protective coatings containing corrosion inhibitors (CIs). ZnAl layered double hydroxides (LDH) have been used to immobilize CIs, which can reduce their early leaching and, thus, foster long-term corrosion protection. However, the environmental behavior of these nanomaterials remains largely unknown, particularly in the context of global changes. The present study aims to assess the environmental behavior of four anti-corrosion nanomaterials in an ocean acidification scenario (IPCC SSP3-7.0). Three different concentrations of the nanostructured CIs (1.23, 11.11, and 100 mg L−1) were prepared and maintained at 20 °C and 30 °C in artificial salt water (ASW) at two pH values, with and without the presence of organic matter. The nanomaterials’ particle size and the release profiles of Al3+, Zn2+, and anions were monitored over time. In all conditions, the hydrodynamic size of the dispersed nanomaterials confirmed that the high ionic strength favors their aggregation/agglomeration. In the presence of organic matter, dissolved Al3+ increased, while Zn2+ decreased, and increased in the ocean acidification scenario at both temperatures. CIs were more released in the presence of humic acid. These findings demonstrate the influence of the tested parameters in the nanomaterials’ environmental behavior, leading to the release of metals and CIs. Full article

Iopamidol (IPM), as a typical recalcitrant emerging pollutant and precursor of iodinated disinfection by-products (I-DBPs), is unsuccessfully removed by conventional wastewater treatment processes. This study comprehensively evaluated the ozone/peracetic acid (O3/PAA) process for IPM degradation, focusing on degradation kinetics, environmental impacts, transformation products, ecotoxicity, disinfection byproducts (DBPs), and microbial inactivation. The O3/PAA system synergistically activates PAA via O3 to generate hydroxyl radicals (OH) and organic radicals (CH3COO and CH3CO(O)O), achieving an IPM degradation rate constant of 0.10 min−1, which was significantly higher than individual O3 or PAA treatments. The degradation efficiency of IPM in the O3/PAA system exhibited a positive correlation with solution pH, achieving a maximum degradation rate constant of 0.23 min−1 under alkaline conditions (pH 9.0). Furthermore, the process demonstrated strong resistance to interference from coexisting anions, maintaining robust IPM removal efficiency in the presence of common aqueous matrix constituents. Furthermore, quenching experiments revealed OH dominated IPM degradation in O3/PAA system, while the direct oxidation by O3 and R-O played secondary roles. Additionally, based on transformation products (TPs) identification and ECOSAR predictions, the primary degradation pathways were elucidated and the potential ecotoxicity of TPs was systematically assessed. DBPs analysis after chlorination revealed that the O3/PAA (2.5:3) system achieved the lowest total DBPs concentration (99.88 μg/L), representing a 71.5% reduction compared to PAA alone. Amongst, dichloroacetamide (DCAM) dominated the DBPs profile, comprising > 60% of total species. Furthermore, the O3/PAA process achieved rapid 5–6 log reductions of E. coli. and S. aureus within 3 min. These results highlight the dual advantages of O3/PAA in effective disinfection and byproduct control, supporting its application in sustainable wastewater treatment. Full article

Background/Objectives: Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is a powerful, non-invasive diagnostic tool capable of capturing detailed anatomical and physiological information. MRI contrast agents enhance image contrast but, especially linear gadolinium-based compounds, have been associated with safety concerns. This has prompted interest in alternative contrast agents. Manganese-based contrast agents offer a promising substitute, owing to manganese’s favorable magnetic properties, natural biological role, and strong T1 relaxivity. This review aims to critically assess the structure, mechanisms, applications, and challenges of manganese-based contrast agents in MRI. Methods: This review synthesizes findings from preclinical and clinical studies involving various types of manganese-based contrast agents, including small-molecule chelates, nanoparticles, theranostic platforms, responsive agents, and controlled-release systems. Special attention is given to pharmacokinetics, biodistribution, and safety evaluations. Results: Mn-based agents demonstrate promising imaging capabilities, with some achieving relaxivity values comparable to gadolinium compounds. Targeted uptake mechanisms, such as hepatocyte-specific transport via organic anion-transporting polypeptides, allow for enhanced tissue contrast. However, concerns remain regarding the in vivo release of free Mn2+ ions, which could lead to toxicity. Preliminary toxicity assessments report low cytotoxicity, but further comprehensive long-term safety studies should be carried out. Conclusions: Manganese-based contrast agents present a potential alternative to gadolinium-based MRI agents pending further validation. Despite promising imaging performance and biocompatibility, further investigation into stability and safety is essential. Additional research is needed to facilitate the clinical translation of these agents. Full article

Polyoxometalate (POM)-type supramolecular materials have unique structures and hold immense potential for development in the fields of biomedicine, information storage, and electrocatalysis. In this study, (NH4)3 [AlMo6O24H6]·7H2O was employed as a polyacid anion template, pentacyclic imidazole molecules served as organic ligands, and the moderate-temperature hydrothermal and natural evaporation methods were used in combination for the design and synthesis of two octamolybdenum-oxo cluster (homopolyacids containing molybdenum-oxygen structures as the main small-molecular structures)-based organic–inorganic hybrid compounds, [(C3N2H5)(C3N2H4)][(β-Mo8O26H2)]0.5 (1) and {Zn(C3N2H4)4}{[(γ-Mo8O26)(C3N2H4)2]0.5}·2H2O (2). Structural and property characterization revealed that both compounds crystallized in the P-1 space group with relatively stable three-dimensional structures under the action of hydrogen bonding. Upon temperature stimulation, the [Zn(C3N2H4)4]2+ cation and water molecules in 2 exhibited obvious oscillations, leading to significant dielectric anomalies at approximately 250 and 260 K when dielectric testing was conducted under heating conditions. A nanoparticle formulation was generated from distiller dried grains with solubles (DDGS), and its effect on the production of anthraquinones (AQs) was evaluated on Rubia tinctorum hairy roots. The DDGS material was washed with water and ethyl acetate to remove mainly the soluble organic/inorganic molecules and reduce the fat content, respectively, followed by an alkaline treatment to remove the polysaccharides. The resulting alkaline solutions were then lyophilized and redispersed in deionized water to generate a monodispersed nanoparticulate formulation (DDGS-NP) with a hydrodynamic diameter and zeta potential of 227 ± 42 nm and −53 ± 7 mV, respectively. The formulation demonstrated good colloidal stability over time, and sterilized DDGS-NPs maintained comparable physicochemical properties. The nanoparticles were enriched in protein fractions, unsaturated fatty acids, and orthophosphate anion components from DDGS, as determined by solid-state Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), organic elemental analysis (OEA), and inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES) techniques. The DDGS-NPs were tested at different concentrations on Rubia tinctorum hairy roots, in comparison to or in combination with methyl jasmonate (MeJ), for their capacity to induce the production of AQs. All DDGS-NP concentrations increased the production of specific AQs to 7.7 (100 mg L−1), 7.8 (200 mg L−1), and 9.3 µmol/gFW (500 mg L−1), with an extracellular AQ accumulation of 18 µM for the highest DDGS-NP concentration, in comparison with the control hairy roots (~2 µM AQ). The plant growth was not affected at any of the tested nanoparticle concentrations. Interestingly, the combination of DDGS-NPs and MeJ resulted in the highest extracellular AQ accumulation in R. tinctorum root cultures. Full article

Organic acids could act as retarders in magnesium oxysulfide (MOS) systems, not only delaying setting and improving fluidity but also enhancing compressive strength and water resistance. These effects are generally attributed to both the presence of H+ ions and anion chelation. However, the enhancement efficiency of different organic acids in MOS systems varies significantly due to differences in their molecular structures. To determine the underlying mechanism, this study comparatively investigated the effects of amino trimethylene phosphonic acid (ATMP) and tartaric acid (TA) on the setting time, fluidity, compressive strength, and water resistance of the MOS system, with the two additives incorporated at mole ratios to MgO ranging from 0.002 to 0.006. The mechanism behind it was revealed by discussion on the hydration heat, hydrates, and pH value. Results showed that both ATMP and TA could effectively improve the fluidity, delay the setting process, and enhance the mechanical properties, including strength and water resistance. At a mole ratio of 0.006, the incorporation of ATMP increased the 28 d compressive strength and the softening coefficient by 214.12% and 37.29%, respectively, compared with the blank group. In contrast, under the same dosage, TA led to an increase of 55.13% in the 28 d strength and 22.03% in the softening coefficient. Furthermore, hydration heat, product analysis, and pH measurements indicated that both ATMP and TA inhibited hydration during the initial hours but promoted hydration at later stages. The potential reason could be divided into two aspects: (1) H+ ions from ATMP and TA suppressing the formation of Mg(OH)2; (2) anion chelation with Mg2+ in the liquid phase, leading to a supersaturated solution with higher saturation, which further hindered Mg(OH)2 formation and facilitated the later development of 5Mg(OH)2·MgSO4·7H2O (517 phase). By contrast, under the same mole dosage of H+ or anions, the enhancement in compressive strength as well as the water resistance is superior when using ATMP. This was owing to its stronger chelating ability of ATMP, which more effectively inhibited Mg(OH)2 formation and then promoted the formation of the 517 phase. These findings confirm that the chelating ability of anions exerts an important impact on the retarding effect as well as the enhancement of strength in MOS systems. Full article

The applications of magnetic particles in anti-counterfeiting and anti-absorbing coatings and other functional materials are becoming increasingly widespread. However, due to their high density, the magnetic particles rapidly settle in organic resin media, significantly affecting the quality of the related products. Thereby, reducing the density of the particles is essential. To achieve this goal, high-density magnetic particles were coated onto the surface of hollow silica using anion–cation composite technology. Further, the silane coupling agent N-[3-(trimethoxysilyl)propyl]ethylenediamine was bonded to the surface of magnetic particles to form an amino-covered interfacial layer with a pH value of 9.28, while acrylic acid was polymerized and coated onto the surface of hollow silica to form a carboxyl-covered interfacial layer with a pH value of 4.65. Subsequently, the two materials were compounded to obtain a low-density composite magnetic material. The morphologies and structural compositions of the magnetic composite materials were studied by FTIR, SEM, SEM-EDS, XRD, and other methods. The packing densities of the magnetic composite materials were compared using the particle packing method, thereby solving the problem of magnetic particles settling in the resin solution. Background: Methotrexate (MTX) remains the most commonly prescribed drug used to treat rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Polymorphisms in solute carrier organic anion transporter family member 1B3 (SLCO1B3) and SLCO1B1 may play a critical role in MTX pharmacokinetics and patient outcomes. However, research on these polymorphisms in Saudi Arabia remains limited. We evaluated the association of SLCO1B3 (rs4149117, rs7311358) and SLCO1B1 (rs2306283, rs4149056) polymorphisms with MTX efficacy and safety in Saudi patients with RA. Methods: This multicenter, case-control study included patients diagnosed with RA in Jeddah and Taif. Demographic and clinical data were collected and analyzed. Genotyping of SLCO1B3 (rs4149117, rs7311358) and SLCO1B1 (rs2306283, rs4149056) polymorphisms was performed using Sanger sequencing. Statistical analyses, including logistic regression and haplotype analysis, were conducted to evaluate associations between these polymorphisms, MTX efficacy, and toxicity. Results: The study cohort comprised 100 patients with RA, with 46 showing a good response to MTX and 54 showing a poor response. Clinical predictors of MTX response were significantly higher in patients with poor response. Both SLCO1B3 polymorphisms (rs4149117, rs7311358) were significantly associated with anemia. Significant associations were found between SLCO1B1 (rs2306283) and gastrointestinal disturbances and anemia. The GAAT haplotype was significantly more prevalent among good responders, while the TGGT haplotype was significantly associated with poor responders. Conclusions: These results highlight the importance of genetic testing in predicting MTX treatment outcomes and tailoring personalized treatment plans for patients with RA to improve efficacy and minimize adverse effects. Four novel crystalline architectures based on benzo[c]cinnolininium trifluoromethanesulonate salts, [C12H9N2]+[CF3SO3], have been isolated as single-crystals, and their structures have been determined by X-ray diffraction analysis. The formation of the new salts results from reactions involving the dimeric hydroxo di-n-butylstannane trifluoromethanesulfonato complex [n-Bu2Sn(OH)(H2O)(CF3SO3)]2 (1) and benzo[c]cinnoline (C12H8N2, BCC). Organic salts I, II, III, and IV were crystallized through slow evaporation at room temperature from a mixture of toluene/dichloromethane. The cystallographic structures of I, II, and IV exhibit the presence of monoprotonated benzo[c]cinnolinium cations in interactions with a free benzo[c]cinnoline molecule through N–H···N hydrogen bonding, while for salt III, the monoprotonated cation directly interacts with the CF3SO3 anion via an N–H···O interaction. For all four salts, aromatic π-π interactions involving rings of various components (free benzo[c]cinnoline molecule, benzo[c]cinnolinium cation, toluene molecule), combined with weak C–H···O and C–H···F interactions implying the trifluoromethanesulfonate anion, promote the solid-state self-assembly of supramolecular stacks. In parallel to the formation of benzo[c]cinnolinium based-salts, organotin(IV) 1 was converted into a distannoxane compound, 2{[n-Bu2(μ-OH)SnOSn(μ-η2-O3SCF3)n-Bu2]2[n-Bu2(η1-O3SCF3)SnOSn(μ-OH)n-Bu2]2} (3), which was also isolated as a single crystal and whose crystallographic structure was previously established by us. This study investigated the degradation efficacy, kinetics, and mechanism of the ozone (O3) process and two enhanced O3 processes (O3/peroxymonosulfate (O3/PMS) and O3/peroxymonosulfate/iron molybdates/biochar composite (O3/PMS/FeMoBC)), especially the O3/PMS/FeMoBC process, for the degradation of tetracycline (TC) in water. An FeMoBC sample was synthesized by the impregnation–pyrolysis method. The XRD results showed that the material loaded on BC was an iron molybdates composite, in which Fe2Mo3O8 and FeMoO4 accounted for 26.3% and 73.7% of the composite, respectively. The experiments showed that, for the O3/PMS/FeMoBC process, the optimum conditions were obtained at pH 6.8 ± 0.1, an initial concentration of TC of 0.03 mM, an FeMoBC dosage set at 200 mg/L, a gaseous O3 concentration set at 3.6 mg/L, and a PMS concentration set at 30 μM. Under these reaction conditions, the degradation rate of TC in 8 min and 14 min reached 94.3% and 98.6%, respectively, and the TC could be reduced below the detection limit (10 μg/L) after 20 min of reaction. After recycling for five times, the degradation rate of TC could still reach about 40%. The introduction of FeMoBC into the O3/PMS system significantly improved the TC degradation efficacy and resistance to inorganic anion interference. Meanwhile, it enhanced the generation of hydroxyl radicals (OH) and sulfate radicals (SO4•−), thus improving the oxidizing efficiency of TC in water. Material characterization analysis showed that FeMoBC has a well-developed porous structure and abundant active sites, which is beneficial for the degradation of pollutants. The reaction mechanism of the O3/PMS/FeMoBC system was speculated by the EPR technique and quenching experiments. The results showed that FeMoBC efficiently catalyzed the O3/PMS process to generate a variety of reactive oxygen species, leading to the efficient degradation of TC. There are four active oxidants in O3/PMS/FeMoBC system, namely OH, SO4•−, 1O2, and •O2. The order of their contribution importance was OH, 1O2, SO4•−, and •O2. This study provides an effective technological pathway for the removal of refractory organic matter in the aquatic environment. Full article

The deep defluorination of water remains a significant environmental challenge. In this work, aluminum was loaded onto the bifunctional resin S957 containing a phosphoric-sulfonic acid difunctional group for efficient fluoride removal. Al-S957 demonstrated excellent fluoride removal performance across a broad pH range. When anions and organics coexisted, Al-S957 exhibited significantly better fluoride adsorption performance compared to aluminum-loaded monofunctional resins. The adsorption followed an endothermic chemisorption process on a monolayer surface. FTIR and XPS analyses further revealed that fluoride removal relied on a ligand exchange mechanism. Column adsorption conducted over five cycles highlighted the strong practical potential of Al-S957. The results suggested that Al-S957 exhibits significant potential for practical applications. Multifunctional water-treatment materials urgently need to be developed to avoid normal organic matter, inorganic anions, resistant bacteria, and hazardous disinfection by-products in conventional drinking water treatment strategies. While quaternary ammonium pyridine resins (QAPRs) possess porous adsorption structures and incorporate antibacterial groups, enabling simultaneous water disinfection and purification, their limited bactericidal efficacy hinders broader utilization. Therefore, a deeper understanding of the structure-dependent antimicrobial mechanism in QAPRs is crucial for improving their antibacterial performance. Hexyl (C6) was proved to be the optimal antibacterial alkyl in the QAPRs. A new antibacterial quaternary ammonium pyridine resin Py-61 was prepared by more surficial bactericidal N+ groups and higher efficient antibacterial hexyl, performing with the excellent antibacterial efficiency of 99.995%, far higher than the traditional resin Py-6C (89.53%). The antibacterial resin Py-61 completed the disinfection of sand-filtered water independently to produce safe drinking water, removing the viable bacteria from 3600 to 17 CFU/mL, which meets the drinking water standard of China in GB5749-2022 (<100 CFU/mL). Meanwhile, the contaminants in sand-filtered water were obviously removed by the resin Py-61, including anions and dissolved organic matter (DOM). The resin Py-61 can be regenerated by 15% NaCl solution, and keeps the reused antibacterial efficiency of >99.97%. As an integrated disinfection–purification solution, the novel antibacterial resin presents a promising alternative for enhancing safety in drinking water treatment. Full article
