This paper presents the design and optimisation of a low-power embedded sensor-node architecture for real-time environmental monitoring with on-board machine-learning inference. The proposed system integrates heterogeneous sensing elements for air quality and ambient parameters (temperature, humidity, gas concentration, and particulate matter) into a modular embedded platform based on a low-power microcontroller coupled with an energy-efficient neural inference accelerator. The design emphasises end-to-end energy optimisation through adaptive duty-cycling, hierarchical power domains, and edge-level data reduction. The embedded machine-learning layer performs lightweight event/anomaly detection via on-device multi-class classification (normal/anomalous/critical) using quantised neural models in fixed-point arithmetic. A comprehensive system-level analysis, performed via MATLAB Simulink simulations, evaluates inference accuracy, latency, and energy consumption under realistic environmental conditions. Results indicate that the proposed node achieves 94% inference accuracy, 0.87 ms latency, and an average power consumption of approximately 2.9 mWh, enabling energy-autonomous operation with hybrid solar–battery harvesting. The adaptive LoRaWAN communication strategy further reduces data transmissions by ≈88% relative to periodic reporting. The results indicate that on-device inference can reduce network traffic while maintaining reliable event detection under the evaluated operating conditions. The proposed architecture is intended to support energy-efficient environmental sensing deployments in smart-city and climate-monitoring contexts. Full article

The development of digital twins for railway freight vehicles represents a key step toward more efficient, data-driven maintenance and safety assessment. This study focuses on the creation of a digital twin of the T3000 articulated freight wagon, one of the most widespread intermodal transport solutions in Europe. Despite its relevance, the dynamic behavior of this vehicle type has been scarcely investigated so far in scientific literature. A dedicated onboard measurement layout was defined to enable comprehensive monitoring of vehicle dynamics and the interactions between adjacent wagons within the train. The experimental setup integrates inertial sensors and a 3D vision system, allowing for detailed analysis of both rigid-body and vibrational responses under real operating conditions. A high-fidelity multibody model of the articulated wagon was developed and tuned using the acquired data, achieving optimal agreement with experimental measurements in both straight and curved track segments. The resulting model constitutes a reliable and scalable digital twin of the T3000 wagon, suitable for predictive simulations and virtual testing. Future developments will focus on a deeper investigation of the buffer interaction through an additional experimental campaign, further extending the digital twin’s capability to represent the full dynamic behavior of articulated freight trains. With the fast development of the 5G technology and IoV, a vehicle has become a smart device with communication, computing, and storage capabilities. However, the limited on-board storage and computing resources often cause large latency for task processing and result in degradation of system QoS as well as user QoE. In the meantime, to build the environmentally harmonious transportation system and green city, the energy consumption of data processing has become a new concern in vehicles. Moreover, due to the fast movement of IoV, traditional GSI-based methods face the dilemma of information uncertainty and are no longer applicable. To address these challenges, we propose a T2VC model. To deal with information uncertainty and dynamic offloading due to the mobility of vehicles, we propose a MAB-based QEVA-UCB solution to minimize the system cost expressed as the sum of weighted latency and power consumption. QEVA-UCB takes into account several related factors such as the task property, task arrival queue, offloading decision as well as the vehicle mobility, and selects the optimal location for offloading tasks to minimize the system cost with latency energy awareness and conflict awareness. Extensive simulations verify that, compared with other benchmark methods, our approach can learn and make the task offloading decision faster and more accurately for both latency-sensitive and energy-sensitive vehicle users. Accurate Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) positioning is vital for swarm cooperation. However, this remains challenging in situations where Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) and other external infrastructures are unavailable. To address this challenge, we propose to use only the onboard Microelectromechanical System Inertial Measurement Unit (MIMU), Magnetic sensor, Monocular camera and Ultra-Wideband (UWB) device to construct a distributed and anchor-free cooperative localization system by tightly fusing the measurements. As the onboard UWB measurements under dynamic motion conditions are noisy and discontinuous, we propose an adaptive adjustment method based on chi-squared detection to effectively filter out inconsistent and false ranging information. Moreover, we introduce the pose-only theory to model the visual measurement, which improves the efficiency and accuracy for visual-inertial processing. A sliding window Extended Kalman Filter (EKF) is constructed to tightly fuse all the measurements, which is capable of working under UWB or visual deprived conditions. Additionally, a novel Multidimensional Scaling-MAP (MDS-MAP) initialization method fuses ranging, MIMU, and geomagnetic data to solve the non-convex optimization problem in ranging-aided Simultaneous Localization and Mapping (SLAM), ensuring fast and accurate swarm absolute pose initialization. To overcome the state consistency challenge inherent in the distributed cooperative structure, we model not only the UWB noisy uncertainty but also the neighbor agent’s position uncertainty in the measurement model. Furthermore, we incorporate the Covariance Intersection (CI) method into our UWB measurement fusion process to address the challenge of unknown correlations between state estimates from different UAVs, ensuring consistent and robust state estimation. To validate the effectiveness of the proposed methods, we have established both simulation and hardware test platforms. The proposed method is compared with state-of-the-art (SOTA) UAV localization approaches designed for GNSS-challenged environments. Extensive experiments demonstrate that our algorithm achieves superior positioning accuracy, higher computing efficiency and better robustness. Moreover, even when vision loss causes other methods to fail, our proposed method continues to operate effectively. Full article

Reducing CO2 emissions in transport requires sustainable alternatives such as fuel cell electric vehicles. A critical challenge is the efficient and safe storage and fast refueling of hydrogen at 70 MPa. This study proposes a practical design-support tool to optimize hydrogen storage systems for heavy-duty vehicles with capacities up to 100 kg. A customizable, dynamic Matlab-Simulink model was developed, including all components from dispenser to onboard tanks, enabling evaluation of multiple design options. The aim is to provide clear guidelines to ensure fast, safe, and complete refueling compliant with SAE J2601-5 limits. Simulations showed Type III tanks deliver the best performance. The fastest refueling (~10 min) was achieved with shorter pipes, larger diameters and low temperatures (20 °C ambient, −40 °C dispenser), while Average Pressure Ramp Rate was maximized up to 9 MPa/min (220 g/s of hydrogen from the dispenser) without exceeding SAE limits for pressure and temperature. Wind power generation ships (WPG ships), which combine rigid sails for propulsion and underwater turbines for onboard power generation, have attracted increasing attention as a promising concept for utilizing renewable energy at sea. This study presents an integrated assessment of a WPG ship by combining towing-tank experiments, CFD simulations using ANSYS Fluent, and theoretical analysis to evaluate the coupled performance of sails, hull, and underwater turbines. First, sail thrust and bare-hull resistance were quantified to identify the effective operating-speed range under Beaufort 6–8 wind conditions, and the optimal number of rigid sails was determined. Based on a thrust–resistance balance at a representative rated operating point, two turbine configurations (two and four turbines) were preliminarily sized. The results show that ten rigid sails can provide near-maximum thrust without excessive aerodynamic interference, and the installation of turbines significantly reduces the feasible operating range compared to the bare-hull case. For the two-turbine configuration, a common effective ship-speed range of 6.58–8.0 m/s is obtained, whereas the four-turbine configuration is restricted to 6.58–7.44 m/s due to wake losses, additional appendage drag, and near-free-surface effects. The four-turbine configuration exhibits approximately 30% lower total power output than the two-turbine configuration. These findings demonstrate that an integrated, system-level evaluation is essential for WPG ship design and indicate that the two-turbine configuration offers a more favorable balance between power generation capability and operational flexibility. The automatic emergency braking (AEB) system plays a crucial role in reducing rear-end collisions and is mandatory on certain heavy-duty vehicles, with future regulations extending to passenger cars. However, most current AEB systems are designed based on onboard sensors such as cameras and radar, which may fail to prevent collisions in scenarios where the lead vehicle is already in a collision. To address this issue, this study proposes an enhanced AEB control method based on Vehicle-to-Vehicle (V2V) communication and onboard sensors. The method utilizes V2V communication and onboard sensors to predict obstacles ahead, applying effective braking when necessary. Simulation results in Matlab/Simulink R2022a show that the proposed V2V-based AEB control method reduces the risk of chain collisions, ensuring that the ego vehicle can avoid rear-end collisions even when the lead vehicle is involved in a crash. Three simulation scenarios were designed, where both the subject vehicle and the lead vehicle travel at 120 km/h. The following three distances between the subject vehicle and the lead vehicle were considered: 45 m, 70 m, and 30 m. When the lead vehicle detects an obstacle 30 m ahead and suddenly applies emergency braking, the lead vehicle fails to avoid a collision. In this case, the subject vehicle, equipped only with onboard sensors, is also unable to successfully avoid the crash. However, when the subject vehicle is equipped with both onboard sensors and vehicle-to-vehicle communication, it can prevent a rear-end collision with the lead vehicle, maintaining a vehicle-to-vehicle distance of 1 m, 6.8 m, and 3.1 m, respectively, during the stopping process. This control method contributes to advancing the active safety technologies of autonomous vehicles. Full article

The reliability of the Medium-Voltage Direct-Current (MVDC) power supply system is crucial for train operation, as it powers control, communication, and other critical onboard systems. Accurately locating insulation faults within this system can significantly reduce troubleshooting difficulty and prevent major operational losses. This study addresses a key challenge in applying Time-Domain Reflectometry (TDR) for fault location in single-core cables of IT systems: the incident-end impedance mismatch caused by the variable characteristic impedance of such cables, which fluctuates with installation distance from a ground plane. First, the mechanism through which this mismatch attenuates the primary fault reflection and generates secondary reflections is theoretically modeled. A resistive-capacitive (RC) coupling network is then designed to achieve bidirectional impedance matching between the test equipment and the cable under test while maintaining essential DC isolation. Simulation and experimental results demonstrate that the proposed network effectively mitigates the mismatch issue. In experiments, it increased the proportion of the primary reflected wave entering the receiver by over 30 percentage points and suppressed the secondary reflection by approximately 80%. These improvements enhance waveform clarity and signal strength, directly leading to more accurate fault location. The proposed solution, validated in a railway context, also holds significant potential for improving insulation fault diagnosis in analogous high-voltage cable applications, such as electric vehicle powertrains. FY-4B/GIIRS (Geostationary Interferometric Infrared Sounder) is a new-generation infrared hyperspectral atmospheric vertical sounder onboard a Chinese geostationary meteorological satellite. Its observations with high spatial and temporal resolution play an important role in high-impact weather forecasts. The GIIRS data assimilation module is developed in the GSI (Gridpoint Statistical Interpolation) assimilation system. Super Typhoon Doksuri in 2023 (No. 5) is taken as an example based on this module in this paper. Firstly, the sensitivity of analysis fields to five data thinning schemes at four daily assimilation times from 22 to 28 July 2023 is analyzed: the wavelet transform modulus maxima (WTMM) scheme, the grid-distance schemes of 30 km, 60 km, and 120 km in the GSI assimilation system, and a center field of view (FOV) scheme. Taking the ERA5 reanalysis fields as true, it is found that the mean error of temperature and humidity analysis for the WTMM scheme is the smallest, followed by the 120 km thinning scheme. Subsequently, a 72 h cycling assimilation and forecast experiments are conducted for the WTMM and 120 km thinning schemes. It is found that the root mean square error (RMSE) profiles of temperature and humidity forecast fields with no thinning scheme are the largest at all pressure levels and forecast times. The temperature forecast error decreases after data thinning at altitudes below 300 hPa. Since the WTMM scheme has assimilated more observations than the 120 km scheme, the accuracy of its temperature and humidity forecast fields gradually increases with the forecast time. In terms of typhoon track and intensity forecast, the typhoon intensities are underestimated before landfall and overestimated after landfall for all thinning schemes. As the forecast time increases, the advantage of the WTMM is increasingly evident, with both the forecast intensity and track being closest to the actual observations. Similarly, the forecasted 24 h accumulated precipitation over land is overestimated after typhoon landfall compared with the IMERG Final precipitation products. The location of precipitation simulated by no thinning scheme is more westward overall. The forecast accuracy of the locations and intensities of severe precipitation cores and the typhoon’s outer spiral rain bands over the South China Sea has been improved after thinning. The Equitable Threat Scores (ETSs) of the WTMM thinning scheme are the highest for most precipitation intensity thresholds. Full article

Onboard models serve as the foundation for the advanced control and fault diagnosis of aero-engines. Currently, to address the issues of high computational complexity and insufficient real-time performance in component-level aero-engine models, three improvement methods are proposed: constructing the Jacobian matrix along the reverse flow path to avoid redundant calculations; reducing the number of initial guess variables and equations in the engine co-working system through aerothermodynamic analysis, thereby achieving dimensionality reduction in the nonlinear equation sets; and leveraging the minimal variation in Jacobian inverse elements across the full flight envelope to replace them with fixed gains, thus simplifying transient performance calculations. Simulation results demonstrate that, compared to the regular Newton-Raphson method, the reverse flow method reduces the steady-state, regular transient, and small-step transient calculation time by 27.6%, 33.9%, and 30.8%, respectively, with a maximum relative error within 1.6%; the dimensionality reduction method for equations cuts the steady-state, regular transient, and small-step transient calculation time by 20.1%, 11.4%, and 11.8%, with a maximum relative error within 1.4%; and the constant Jacobian matrix inverse method reduces the calculation time by 50.9% during full flight envelope transient performance simulation, with a maximum relative error below 1.6%. All methods improve real-time performance under rated operating conditions. However, only the reverse flow method preserves both high efficiency and accuracy under off-design operating conditions. This paper describes a compact low-cost telemetry system featuring ready-made sensors and an acquisition unit based on the ESP32, which makes use of the LoRa/Wi-Fi wireless standard for communication, and autonomous fallback logging to guarantee data recovery during communication loss. Ensuring safe atmospheric re-entry requires reliable onboard monitoring of capsule conditions during descent. The system is intended for sub-orbital, low-cost educational capsules and experimental atmospheric descent missions rather than full orbital re-entry at hypersonic speeds, where the environmental loads and communication constraints differ significantly. The novelty of this work is the development of a fully self-contained telemetry system that ensures continuous monitoring and fallback logging without external infrastructure, bridging the gap in compact solutions for CubeSat-scale capsules. In contrast to existing approaches built around UAVs or radar, the proposed design is entirely self-contained, lightweight, and tailored to CubeSat-class and academic missions, where costs and infrastructure are limited. Ground test validation consisted of vertical drop tests, wind tunnel runs, and hardware-in-the-loop simulations. In addition, high-temperature thermal cycling tests were performed to assess system reliability under rapid temperature transitions between −20 °C and +110 °C, confirming stable operation and data integrity under thermal stress. Results showed over 95% real-time packet success with full data recovery in blackout events, while acceleration profiling confirmed resilience to peak decelerations of ~9 g. To complement telemetry, the TeleCapsNet dataset was introduced, facilitating a CNN recognition of descent states via 87% mean Average Precision, and an F1-score of 0.82, which attests to feasibility under constrained computational power. The novelty of this work is twofold: having reliable dual-path telemetry in real-time with full post-mission recovery and producing a scalable platform that explicitly addresses the lack of compact, infrastructure-independent proposals found in the existing literature. Results show an independent and cost-effective system for small re-entry capsule experimenters with reliable data integrity (without external infrastructure). Future work will explore AI systems deployment as a means to prolong the onboard autonomy, as well as to broaden the applicability of the presented approach into academic and low-resource re- entry investigations. Precision agriculture increasingly recognizes the transformative potential of unmanned aerial systems (UASs) for crop monitoring and field assessment, yet research consistently highlights significant usability barriers as the main constraints to widespread adoption. Complex mission planning processes, including detailed flight plan creation and way point management, pose substantial technical challenges that mainly affect non-expert operators. Farmers and their teams generally prefer user-friendly, straightforward tools, as evidenced by the rapid adoption of GPS guidance systems, which underscores the need for simpler mission planning in UAS operations. To enhance accessibility and safety in UAS control, especially for non-expert operators in agriculture and related fields, we propose a Secure UAS Control Framework (SAUCF): a comprehensive system for natural-language-driven UAS mission management with integrated dual-factor biometric authentication. The framework converts spoken user instructions into executable flight plans by leveraging a language-model-powered mission planner that interprets transcribed voice commands and generates context-aware operational directives, including takeoff, location monitoring, return-to-home, and landing operations. Mission orchestration is performed through a large language model (LLM) agent, coupled with a human-in-the-loop supervision mechanism that enables operators to review, adjust, or confirm mission plans before deployment. Additionally, SAUCF offers a manual override feature, allowing users to assume direct control or interrupt missions at any stage, ensuring safety and adaptability in dynamic environments. Proof-of-concept demonstrations on a UAS plat-form with on-board computing validated reliable speech-to-text transcription, biometric verification via voice matching and face authentication, and effective Sim2Real transfer of natural-language-driven mission plans from simulation environments to physical UAS operations. Initial evaluations showed that SAUCF reduced mission planning time, minimized command errors, and simplified complex multi-objective workflows compared to traditional waypoint-based tools, though comprehensive field validation remains necessary to confirm these preliminary findings. The integration of natural-language-based interaction, real-time identity verification, human-in-the-loop LLM orchestration, and manual override capabilities allows SAUCF to significantly lower the technical barrier to UAS operation while ensuring mission security, operational reliability, and operator agency in real-world conditions. These findings lay the groundwork for systematic field trials and suggest that prioritizing ease of operation in mission planning can drive broader deployment of UAS technologies. Full article

The study analyzed the energy flow of a second-generation Toyota Mirai FCEV under Real Driving Conditions (RDC) in ECO and Normal driving modes. The results demonstrated significant operational differences between the two modes. The ECO mode reduced the maximum motor torque from 286.5 Nm to 187.6 Nm (−51%) but increased the high-voltage (HV) battery State of Charge swing (ΔSOC = 17.26% vs. 10.59%, +63%). Regenerative energy recovery rose by ~19.8% overall and by 25.7% in urban driving. The ECO mode exhibited higher HV battery cycling (4.03 Wh vs. 3.27 Wh) and slightly higher fuel cell energy use in urban conditions (+8.5%). The average fuel cell power was 36% higher in Normal mode, whereas the HV battery output was 11.4% higher in ECO mode. Hydrogen consumption in Normal mode was two times higher in urban and highway phases and three times higher in rural driving compared to ECO mode. In summary, the ECO mode enhances regenerative energy utilization and reduces total onboard energy consumption, at the expense of peak torque and increased battery cycling. These results provide valuable insights for optimizing energy management strategies in fuel cell electric powertrains under real driving conditions. The study introduces an independent methodology for high-resolution (1 Hz) electric energy-flow monitoring and quantification of energy exchange between the fuel cell, high-voltage battery, and powertrain system under Real Driving Conditions (RDC). Unlike manufacturer-derived data or laboratory simulations, the presented approach enables empirical validation of on-board energy management strategies in production FCEVs. The results reveal distinctive energy-flow patterns in ECO and Normal modes, offering reference data for the optimization of future hybrid control algorithms in hydrogen-powered vehicles. Ship damage control (DC) is pivotal to platform survivability in the face of battle damage and severe accidents. The DC context features multi-hazard coupling among flooding, fire, and smoke, as well as fast system dynamics and intensive human–machine collaboration, demanding real-time predictive simulation and decision support. Conventional DC simulations fall short in multiphysics fidelity, predictive speed, and integration with onboard sensing and control. A digital twin (DT) framework for predictive shipboard DC is introduced with an explicit capability envelope, observability, and latency requirements, and a cyber-physical mapping to ship systems. Building on this foundation, a three-stage/four-level maturity model charts progression from L1 monitoring, through L2 prediction and L3 human-in-the-loop, override-enabled plan generation, to L4 closed-loop decision control, specifying capability milestones and evaluation metrics. Guided by this model, a four-layer architecture and an end-to-end roadmap are formulated, spanning multi-domain modeling, multi-source sensing and fusion, surrogate-accelerated multiphysics simulation, assisted plan generation with human approval/override, and cyber-physical closed-loop control. The framework aligns interfaces, performance targets, and verification pathways, providing actionable guidance to upgrade shipboard DC toward resilient, efficient, and human-centric operation under multi-hazard coupling. The switching action of the main circuit breaker of the train will produce switching overvoltage. In order to suppress the switching overvoltage, the phase selection control of the circuit breaker is required. However, the mechanical structure of the train-mounted electronically controlled pneumatic vacuum main circuit breaker is too complicated, resulting in a large dispersion of its closing action time, which is not suitable for the traditional phase selection control system. In order to obtain the accurate closing action time, a method for predicting the closing action time of train electronically controlled pneumatic vacuum main circuit breaker based on the PCA and GBDT algorithm is proposed. The relationship between the closing phase of AC25 kV power supply train and the peak value of switching overvoltage is obtained by simulation and field test, and the accuracy requirement of the prediction model is determined, that is, the prediction error should be within ±3.3 ms. The final prediction results show that the prediction error of the on-board electronically controlled pneumatic vacuum main circuit breaker closing action time prediction model based on the PCA and GBDT algorithm is controlled within ±3.3 ms, and the probability is 92%, which meets the accuracy requirements of phase selection control.
