Wildfires represent one of the most destructive natural disturbances, yet they play a fundamental ecological role in the regeneration and evolution of forest ecosystems. In Mediterranean regions, fire acts as a selective factor shaping plant adaptive strategies and the structure of vegetation mosaics. This study analyzes post-fire regeneration dynamics in Pinus radiata and P. pinaster plantations located in Roccaforte del Greco (Metropolitan City of Reggio Calabria, southern Italy), severely affected by the 2021 wildfires. Phytosociological surveys were conducted along permanent transects using the Braun-Blanquet method and analyzed through diversity indices (Shannon, Evenness), Non-Metric Multidimensional Scaling (NMDS), Indicator Species Analysis (IndVal), and hierarchical clustering. The results reveal a clear floristic differentiation among management conditions, with higher species diversity and variability, and a predominance of pioneer therophytes and hemicryptophytes in burned areas. The in situ retention of burned logs enhances structural and microenvironmental heterogeneity, facilitating the establishment of native species and supporting post-fire functional recovery. Overall, this preliminary study, focusing on early successional dynamics, suggests that the in situ retention of burned logs may positively contribute to ecosystem resilience and biodiversity in post-fire Mediterranean pine forests, while also highlighting the need for long-term monitoring to confirm the persistence of these effects. As global production networks become increasingly regionalized, diversified, and resilience-oriented, metropolitan areas (MAs) have emerged as important spatial platforms for industrial development. This study examines whether China’s national-level metropolitan area integration policies promote urban industrial structure upgrading and, if so, through which channels. We first develop a set of conceptual mechanisms and hypotheses, and then test them using panel data for 281 prefecture-level cities in China from 2012 to 2022. A staggered difference-in-differences (DID) model, complemented by a series of robustness checks, is employed to identify the policy effects. The baseline estimates indicate that the industrial structure of MA member cities is, on average, about 2.43 percentage points more advanced than that of non-MA cities. Mechanism analysis shows that the policies foster urban industrial upgrading through unified market formation, technological improvement, and optimization of factor endowments. However, the policies have only a very limited impact on breakthroughs in cutting-edge or frontier technologies. Based on these findings, we propose targeted policy recommendations to address the identified shortcomings. Full article

This study investigates the sustainability, resilience, and institutional performance of urban governance systems by operationalizing key thermodynamic principles energy, exergy, entropy, equilibrium, open systems, and irreversibility within a political and behavioral systems framework. Urban political systems are conceptualized as open, non-equilibrium systems, characterized by continuous flows of resources, information, and institutional feedback across metropolitan governance structures. Within this model, energy represents systemic inputs to urban governance, exergy denotes usable governing capacity at the city and metropolitan scale, and entropy reflects levels of institutional disorder, inefficiency, and systemic degradation affecting urban sustainability. The study first formulates a conceptual analytical model defining urban political entropy and systemic exergy as measurable variables associated with institutional stability, crisis-management capability, adaptability, and reform potential in urban and metropolitan governance. It then conducts a comparative empirical analysis of Germany, Türkiye, China, and South Africa using normalized indicators derived from international datasets for 2023, with particular attention to their implications for urban governance capacity and city-level institutional performance. These indicators are employed to construct proxy measures for the Exergy Efficiency Ratio, Societal and Institutional Entropy, and overall urban governance capacity. The comparative results reveal that open and decentralized governance systems tend to maintain higher exergy efficiency and lower entropy levels at the urban scale, whereas highly centralized systems, although effective in resource mobilization, tend to accumulate greater systemic entropy over time. Transitional governance systems exhibit hybrid and fluctuating thermodynamic characteristics in their urban institutional structures. The findings empirically support the Thermodynamic Model of Political Systems and demonstrate its utility as a predictive and diagnostic framework for evaluating urban institutional efficiency, resilience, and sustainability. This article examines the role of coworking and flexible workspaces in promoting sustainable spatial development in the non-metropolitan areas of Bulgaria. A mixed-method approach was applied, combining inventory enumeration, spatial classification, SDG-based sustainability assessment, and qualitative coding (open, axial, selective). A total of 74 coworking and flexible workspaces were identified across the six national planning regions, evaluated according to six analytical criteria (accessibility, seasonality, specialization, municipal administrative district, urban planning zone, building function) and assessed against five SDG-aligned dimensions (SDG 8, 9, 11, 12, 13). The results reveal uneven territorial distribution, strong concentration in major cities outside the capital, and emerging sustainable models in peripheral areas. Comparative SDG scoring and typological interpretation demonstrate three recurring models—Sustainable Reuse, Nature-Oriented, and Innovative/Experimental—each associated with distinct spatial and environmental characteristics. A metropolitan benchmarking exercise further contextualizes the strongest sustainability profiles. Based on these findings, a conceptual sustainable coworking model is developed for a nationally significant spa and climatic resort, illustrating how coworking can address regional disparities, support green transition policies, and reinforce territorial cohesion. The article concludes by outlining research directions related to digitalization, circular construction, environmental performance indicators, and feasibility assessments for non-metropolitan coworking development. This study aimed to determine carbonyl compound concentrations and assess their potential health risk in indoor air at three homes in different areas of the Mexico City Metropolitan Area (MCMA) during the COVID-19 lockdown. Sampling was conducted from March to April 2021, during the home office confinement period. Average concentrations of formaldehyde, acetaldehyde, acrolein, acetone, propionaldehyde, and butyraldehyde in living rooms ranged from 84.15 to 74.93 μg m−3, 66.49 to 50.20 μg m−3, 60.01 to 41.35 μg m−3, 74.58 to 63.02 μg m−3, 10.90 to 6.21 μg m−3, and 12.45 to 9.91 μg m−3, respectively. In bedrooms, concentrations ranged from 84.76 to 59.70 μg m−3, 50.12 to 51.73 μg m−3, 59.74 to 37.25 μg m−3, 76.62 to 59.72 μg m−3, 14.45 to 8.40 μg m−3, and 10.72 to 8.82 μg m−3, respectively. All measured carbonyls had significant indoor concentrations, exceeding those reported in other studies worldwide. From the statistical analysis, it was found that there were significant differences in carbonyl levels between the studied homes. This suggests diverse and prevalent sources in these environments. E-cigarette vapors clearly increased acrolein levels, and the use of personal care and household products (PCHPs) also contributed to higher carbonyl concentrations indoors. The lifetime cancer risk coefficient (LTCR) and hazard quotient (HQ) values for formaldehyde and acetaldehyde exceeded WHO and US EPA recommendations, indicating increased risks of both carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic effects. The end-of-life phase of a building, which includes demolition and waste disposal, represents a crucial aspect of sustainable construction. In Europe, construction and demolition (C&D) waste accounts for approximately 40% of the total waste generated in the EU, making its management a global challenge. The EU Construction & Demolition Waste Management Protocol (2024) emphasizes the importance of evaluating, before proceeding with the demolition of a building, whether renovation could be a more efficient solution, considering economic, environmental, and technical aspects. From an economic perspective, demolition costs vary depending on several factors, including project size, structural complexity, techniques employed (conventional or non-conventional), materials to be removed, and local regulations. In addition to the direct costs of the intervention, it is essential to consider indirect impacts, such as the management of construction and demolition (C&D) waste, the removal of hazardous substances, and potential environmental damage to be mitigated. This study analyzes a case located in Italy, in the municipality of Caivano (Metropolitan City of Naples, in Campania region), concerning a building that required energy efficiency improvements and seismic upgrades. The decision to demolish and rebuild proved to be economically more advantageous than renovation, while also allowing a 35% increase in volume, enabling the creation of a greater number of housing units. Through the analysis of this real case study, the aim is to highlight how investments in demolition, if properly planned, designed, assessed, and managed, can effectively contribute to building redevelopment, supporting the transition towards a sustainable construction model in line with the principles of the circular economy. Land use change is closely related to land surface temperature (LST). Based on remote sensing data from 2001 to 2020, this study analyzed the spatiotemporal variations and driving mechanisms of daytime and nighttime LST in the Urumqi Metropolitan Area (UMA) by combining traditional methods with the eXtreme Gradient Boosting (XGBoost)–SHAP coupled model. Although the average LST trend in the region was one of warming, the pixel-level significance analysis indicated that statistically significant warming (p < 0.05) is concentrated mainly in the urban core (2.65% of the area), while the majority of the region (70%) showed a non-significant warming trend. LST displayed significant spatial clustering, with Moran’s I remaining above 0.990, indicating a positive spatial autocorrelation in spatial distribution. With the advancement of urbanization, the proportion of impervious surfaces increased from 0.87% to 1.14%, while wastelands consistently accounted for approximately 50% of the total area. Different land use types showed distinct effects on the urban heat island (UHI) phenomenon: water bodies, grasslands, and forests played cooling roles, whereas barren land and impervious areas were the main heat contributors. The XGBoost-SHAP analysis further revealed that the importance ranking of driving factors has evolved over time. Among these factors, Elevation dominates, while the influence of population-related factors increased significantly in 2020. This study provides a scientific basis for regulating the thermal environment of cities in arid regions from the perspective of land use. Contemporary cities and metropolises, as complex spatial and social structures, require innovative tools for promotion, education, and the identification of development potential. The search for such tools prompted the authors to conduct the research. This article attempts to assess the effectiveness of urban and metropolitan games as tools of territorial marketing and as means of supporting spatial education and social participation. The research is based on the analysis of 42 games with urban and metropolitan themes, selected according to defined criteria. Both qualitative and quantitative research methods were applied, including documentation analysis, comparative analysis techniques, statistical methods, case studies, and coding of games across seven parameters (dimensions), using five descriptors (coded 1–5) per parameter. The research results indicate a high diversity among the analyzed games in terms of structure, function, and application. The proposed typology of games allowed for an in-depth, systematic comparison. The identification of five typological clusters allowed for an assessment of the advantages and limitations of individual game forms. This provided data on the suitability of individual game types for various purposes, including their application in territorial marketing and urban education. The findings confirm that urban and metropolitan games can play a significant role in building spatial awareness, supporting planning processes, and promoting urban areas. They represent an innovative tool supporting the sustainable development of cities and metropolises, particularly in the areas of resident engagement in decision-making processes, collaboration between authorities, residents, and non-governmental organizations, planning with consideration for future generations, as well as fostering—even among the younger generation—a sense of shared responsibility for urban space and the decisions undertaken. The rapid expansion of electric vehicles in high-altitude Andean cities, such as the Metropolitan District of Quito, Ecuador’s capital, presents unique challenges for electrical infrastructure planning, necessitating advanced methodologies that capture behavioral heterogeneity and mass synchronization effects in high-penetration scenarios. This study introduces a hybrid approach that combines agent-based modelling with Monte Carlo simulation and a TimescaleDB architecture project charging demand with quarter-hour resolution through 2040. The model calibration deployed real-world data from 764 charging points collected over 30 months, which generated 2.1 million charging sessions. A dynamic coincidence factor (FC=0.222+0.036e(0.0003n)) was incorporated, resulting in a 52% reduction in demand overestimation compared to traditional models. The results for the 2040 project show a peak demand of 255 MW (95% CI: 240–270 MW) and an annual consumption of 800 GWh. These findings reveal that non-optimized time-of-use tariffs can generate a critical “cliff effect,” increasing peak demand by 32%, whereas smart charging management with randomization reduces it by 18 ± 2.5%. Model validation yields a MAPE of 4.2 ± 0.8% and an RMSE of 12.3 MW. The TimescaleDB architecture demonstrated processing speeds of 2398.7 records/second and achieved 91% data compression. This methodology offers robust tools for urban energy planning and demand-side management policy optimization in high-altitude contexts, with the source code available to ensure reproducibility. Balancing the development of urban road infrastructure (URI) with the pace of urbanization is crucial to supporting high-quality urban growth. This study constructed a comprehensive evaluation framework of URI and urbanization using data from 101 Chinese cities between 2002 and 2021. The spatio-temporal characteristics of URI and urbanization were assessed using the entropy weighting method and the relative development index (RDI). Key variables were identified through the obstacle degree model and further refined via relative importance analysis. To investigate the nonlinear interactions among the most influential factors, a random forest model was employed in combination with SHapley Additive exPlanations (SHAP). The results revealed three key findings: (1) both URI and urbanization levels exhibited overall upward trends during the study period, although notable disparities were observed across cities; (2) URI development generally outpaced urbanization, indicating a lack of synergy between the two systems; and (3) key determinants of this mismatch included road density, total road area, the number of streetlights per unit road length, resident population size, and educational human capital. By integrating multidimensional URI and urbanization metrics in a comprehensive evaluation framework, this study provides new insights into the spatial synergy mechanisms and supports the formulation of tier-specific urban planning strategies. Under the “dual carbon” strategy, clarifying the relationship between economic growth and carbon emissions and revealing the differences in green transition pathways among different urban tiers within the metropolitan area is of great significance for promoting regional low-carbon development. Based on panel data of prefecture-level cities in 27 national metropolitan areas in China from 2000 to 2020, this paper employs a two-way fixed effects model and a mediation effect model to test the Environmental Kuznets Curve (EKC) hypothesis and to evaluate the mediating role of industrial structure advancement. The results show that, at the national level, carbon emissions and economic growth exhibit a significant inverted U-shaped relationship, but the EKC becomes invalid in non-core cities after dividing the sample into core and non-core cities. Industrial structure advancement significantly curbs carbon emissions in core cities, while its effect is insignificant in non-core cities, indicating insufficient structural transformation capacity. The findings suggest that core cities have initially formed a “structure-embedded” emission reduction pathway, whereas non-core cities face a dual challenge of growth and emission reduction. In terms of policy, excessive reliance on the “automatic decoupling of growth” should be avoided, and a differentiated governance system centred on structural transformation capacity should be established, with particular attention to enhancing the green transition capacity of non-core cities so as to promote regionally equitable and coordinated low-carbon development. The phenomenon of arable land non-agriculturalization has become increasingly severe, posing significant threats to the security of arable land resources and ecological sustainability. This study focuses on Dachang Hui Autonomous County in Langfang City, Hebei Province, a region located at the edge of the Beijing–Tianjin–Hebei metropolitan cluster. In recent years, the area has undergone accelerated urbanization and industrial transfer, resulting in drastic land use changes and a pronounced contradiction between arable land protection and the expansion of construction land. The study period is 2016–2023, which covers the key period of the Beijing–Tianjin–Hebei synergistic development strategy and the strengthening of the national arable land protection policy, and is able to comprehensively reflect the dynamic changes of arable land non-agriculturalization under the policy and urbanization process. Multi-temporal Sentinel-2 imagery was utilized to construct a multi-dimensional feature set, and machine learning classifiers were applied to identify arable land non-agriculturalization with optimized performance. GIS-based analysis and the geographic detector model were employed to reveal the spatio-temporal dynamics and driving mechanisms. The results demonstrate that the XGBoost model, optimized using Bayesian parameter tuning, achieved the highest classification accuracy (overall accuracy = 0.94) among the four classifiers, indicating its superior suitability for identifying arable land non-agriculturalization using multi-temporal remote sensing imagery. Spatio-temporal analysis revealed that non-agriculturalization expanded rapidly between 2016 and 2020, followed by a deceleration after 2020, exhibiting a pattern of “rapid growth–slowing down–partial regression”. Further analysis using the geographic detector revealed that socioeconomic factors are the primary drivers of arable land non-agriculturalization in Dachang Hui Autonomous County, while natural factors exerted relatively weaker effects. These findings provide technical support and scientific evidence for dynamic monitoring and policy formulation regarding arable land under urbanization, offering significant theoretical and practical implications. Background: Non-communicable diseases (NCDs) are a leading cause of mortality globally, contributing significantly to the burden on healthcare systems. Understanding the spatiotemporal patterns of NCD mortality is crucial for identifying vulnerable populations and regions at high risk. Objectives: Here, we evaluated the spatiotemporal patterns of NCD mortality in the Metropolitan Area of the Valley of Mexico (MAVM) from 2000 to 2019 for five International Classification of Diseases chapters (4, 5, 6, 9, and 10) at two spatial scales: the municipal level and metropolitan region. Methods: Mortality rates were calculated for the total population and stratified by sex and age groups at both spatial scales. In addition, the relative risk (RR) of mortality was estimated to identify vulnerable population groups and regions with a high risk of mortality, using women and the 25–34 age group as reference categories for population-level analysis, and the overall MAVM mortality rate as the reference for municipal-level analysis. Results: Mortality trends showed that circulatory-system diseases (Chapter 9) are emerging as a concerning health issue, with 45 municipalities showing increasing mortality trends, especially among older adults. Respiratory-system diseases (Chapter 10), mental and behavioral disorders (Chapter 5) and nervous-system diseases (Chapter 6) predominantly did not exhibit a consistent general mortality trend. However, upon disaggregating by sex and age groups, specific negative or positive trends emerged at the municipal level for some of these chapters or subgroups. Endocrine, nutritional, and metabolic diseases (Chapter 4) showed a complex pattern, with some age groups presenting increasing mortality trends, and 52 municipalities showing increasing trends overall. The RR showed men and older age groups (≥35 years) exhibiting higher mortality risks. The temporal trend of RR allowed us to identify spatial mortality hotspots mainly in chapters related to circulatory, endocrine, and respiratory diseases, forming four geographical clusters in Mexico City that show persistent high risk of mortality. Conclusions: The spatiotemporal analysis highlights municipalities and vulnerable populations with a consistently elevated mortality risk. These findings emphasize the need for monitoring NCD mortality patterns at both the municipal and metropolitan levels to address disparities and guide the implementation of health policies aimed at reducing mortality risk in vulnerable populations. In an ever-changing driving environment where vehicles are becoming smarter, more autonomous, and more connected, a paradigmatic change in signals for drivers might be required. This need is correlated with road safety (social sustainability). There are several factors affecting road safety, and one of these, especially important on rural roads, is speed. One way to actively influence drivers’ speed is to intervene with regard to speed limit signs by providing credible and effective limits. This goal can be pursued by working on variable speed limits that align with the boundary conditions of the installation site. In this research, an analysis was conducted on the rural road network within the Metropolitan City of Bari (Italy) that involved collecting the speeds on each of the investigated two-way, two-lane rural roads of the network. In addition to the speeds, all the most relevant geometric details of the roads were considered, together with environmental factors like rainfall. A generalized linear model was developed to correlate the operating speed limits and other variables together with information about rainfall, which degrades tire–pavement friction and thus, road safety. After the development of this model, safety performance functions, depending on the amount of rain or number of days of rain, were calculated with the intent of predicting crash frequency, starting with the operative speed and rain conditions. Operative speed, speed limit, percentage of non-compliant drivers, traffic level, and site length were found to be associated with all typologies and locations of crashes investigated. Full article

Background: Oral diseases represent a constant burden for health care and socio-economic systems as they are correlated to other non-communicable diseases. The aim of the proposed intervention is to test the effect of daily tooth brushing and oral health education on the oral health status of kindergarten children. Methods: The protocol will be conducted based on a previous epidemiological survey and conducted over 24 months; it has been developed on different levels. Dental hygienists will receive specific training to deliver oral health promotion to children and nursery educators. Training will focus on tailoring key messages to the specific age at visit; this will be outlined in the care pathway and offer practical preparation for delivering interventions and a toothpaste/toothbrush scheme. It will also, involving involve offering free daily tooth brushing to every 4–6-year-old child attending nursery. Data will be collected in four kindergartens in the capital or metropolitan areas, two kindergartens each in two large cities, and one kindergarten each in four villages from different geographic areas. Procedures used to assess the outcomes of each activity will be tailored to specific outcomes. Daily tooth-brushing activities will be monitored using qualitative research. A cost analysis including the distribution of necessary materials and correct delivery of products that shows price trends and percentage differences over the time span as well as consumer price index evaluation for the given time span will be conducted. Clinical outcomes will be evaluated using the caries incidence rate; this will be calculated for each tooth as the unit of analysis and evaluated using a multi-step approach. Discussion: Downstream oral health prevention interventions, like clinical prevention and oral health promotion, aim to enhance children’s quality of life. The program’s goal is to progress towards upstream interventions for a more significant impact. Full article
