Coffee silverskin (CS), a by-product generated during coffee roasting, contains high levels of xylan hemicellulose and protein, making it a promising substrate for functional ingredient production. This study developed an integrated bioprocess to simultaneously produce bioactive peptides and xylooligosaccharides (CS-XOS) from CS. Conventional alkaline extraction (CAE) under optimized conditions (1.0 M NaOH, 90 °C, 30 min) yielded 80.64 mg of protein per gram of CS and rendered the solid residue suitable for XOS production. Enzymatic hydrolysis of the extracted protein using protease_SE5 generated low-molecular-weight peptides (0.302 ± 0.01 mg/mL), including FLGY, FYDTYY, and FDYGKY. These peptides were non-toxic, exhibited in vitro antioxidant activity (0–50%), and showed ACE-inhibitory activities of 60%, 26%, and 79%, and DPP-IV-inhibitory activities of 19%, 18%, and 0%, respectively. Concurrently, the alkaline-treated CS solid residue (ACSS) was hydrolyzed using recombinant endo-xylanase, yielding 52.5 ± 0.08 mg of CS-XOS per gram of ACSS. The CS-XOS exhibited prebiotic effects by enhancing the growth of probiotic lactic acid bacteria (μmax 0.100–0.122 h−1), comparable to commercial XOS. This integrated bioprocess eliminates the need for separate processing lines, enhances resource efficiency, and provides a sustainable strategy for valorizing agro-industrial waste. The co-produced peptides and CS-XOS offer significant potential as functional food ingredients and nutraceuticals. Full article

This literature-based review draws on studies of thirty-four fish species; most are from northern temperate regions. Fish have flexible and indeterminate growth, and often they do not reach their growth and size potential. They may become stunted with impaired growth and early maturity, chiefly as a phenotypically plastic reaction. The main causes of stunted growth are negatively density-dependent food availability and keen intraspecific competition leading to environmental stress. Typically, their growth levels off early in life as energy consumptions approach energy costs of maintenance. Females typically attain maturity soon after the energy surplus from feeding starts to decrease. Males are often more variable in size at maturity owing to alternative mating strategies, and their size at maturity depends on both species-specific mating behaviours and environmental opportunities. In polyphenic/polymorphic populations, one phenotype may be stunted and the other phenotype non-stunted; stunted individuals do not perform the required ontogenetic niche shift needed to grow larger. The adult morphology of stunted fish is typically like the morphology of juveniles. Their secondary sexual characters are less pronounced, and they phenotypically retain adaptation to their early feeding niche, which is different from that of large-growing individuals. There are open questions regarding to what extent genetics and epigenetics regulate the life histories of stunted phenotypes. Full article

A global poly-crisis of climate change, biodiversity loss, dwindling natural resources, geopolitical instability, among other complex challenges, is on the rise. Societal transformations are therefore imminent, whether intended or unintended. The key question is how to steward and facilitate such changes where fragmentation and siloed ways of working persist. The concept of synergies and the notion of synergic action could help overcome fragmented efforts to steer transformative changes. However, there exists a critical research gap in understanding the conditions needed to enable synergic action. This paper thus explores how synergic action is currently undertaken and the key essentials needed to deliver synergic action. The study uses a case study of the Yorkshire food system transformation to learn from its exemplar practitioners. The study used semi-structured interviews and a thematic analysis process to reach our two key findings. First, we highlight the three types of synergic action: (1) Non-systemic synergic action, (2) Non-systemic synergic action with multiple outcomes, and (3) Systemic synergic action. Differentiating types of synergic action can help identify where synergic action is already underway and guide more explicit efforts towards transformative change. The second key finding is the five essentials for synergic action, which are (1) leadership for synergic action; (2) networking, partnerships, and collaborations; (3) care and understanding; (4) a systems approach; and (5) intentionality for synergic action. This study brings to the fore the importance of intentionality, without which the first four essentials are less likely to coalesce. This is important to inform the reflection and learning of practitioners of systemic change about how they are currently and could be working more synergistically in the future, driven by clear intentionality. This article describes the design, methods, and baseline characteristics of the social needs assessment (SNA) of participants enrolled in an ongoing randomized clinical trial implementing a comprehensive approach to improving diabetes self-management and providing an intensive Diabetes Self-Management Education and Support (iDSMES) Program at St. Vincent’s House Clinic, a primary care practice serving resource-challenged diverse populations in Galveston, Texas. Standardized SNA was conducted to collect information on financial needs, psychosocial well-being, and other chronic health conditions. Based on their identified needs, participants were referred to non-medical existing community resources. A series of in-depth interviews were conducted with a subset of participants. A team member independently categorized these SNA narratives and aggregated them into two overarching groups: medical and social needs. Fifty-nine participants (with a mean age of 53 years and equal representation of men and women) completed an SNA. Most (71%) did not have health insurance. Among 12 potential social needs surveyed, the most frequently requested resources were occupational therapy (78%), utility assistance (73%), and food pantry services (71%). SNA provided data with the potential to address barriers that may hinder participation, retention, and outcomes in diabetes self-management. SNA findings may serve as tertiary prevention to mitigate diabetes-related complications and disparities. Full article

Background/Objectives: Acrylamide is a probably carcinogenic to humans that naturally forms during the thermal processing of foods. An individual’s lifestyle—especially dietary habits and physical activity—may influence the severity of acrylamide’s adverse health effects. This study aimed to examine the relationship between adolescents’ dietary and exercise behaviors and their dietary acrylamide exposure and associated health risks. Methods: This descriptive and cross-sectional study was conducted with 370 high school students in Türkiye. Data were collected using the Nutrition Exercise Behavior Scale (NEBS) and a retrospective 24-h dietary recall questionnaire. Acrylamide exposure was calculated based on food intake to estimate carcinogenic (CR) and non-corcinogenic (target hazard quotient: THQ) health risks and analyzed in relation to NEBS scores. Results: Findings indicated that while adolescents are beginning to adopt healthy eating and exercise habits, these behaviors are not yet consistent. Emotional eating and unhealthy food choices still occur. Higher acrylamide exposure and risk values were observed in boys and underweight individuals. This can be explained mainly by the fact that boys consume more of certain foods—especially bread, which contains relatively higher levels of acrylamide—than girls do, and that underweight individuals have lower body weights despite consuming similar amounts of food as other groups. Bread products emerged as the primary source of daily acrylamide intake. Positive correlations were found between NEBS total and subscale scores and acrylamide exposure and health risk values. Conclusions: The study demonstrates a significant association between adolescents’ health behaviors and acrylamide exposure. These results underscore potential public health concerns regarding acrylamide intake during adolescence and emphasize the need for targeted nutritional interventions to reduce risk and promote sustainable healthy behaviors. The utilisation of edible insects for human nutrition is a long-standing practice in many parts of the globe, and is being gradually introduced into countries without an entomophagic tradition as well. These unconventional sources of protein of animal origin have arisen as a sustainable alternative to other animal protein sources, such as meat. This review intends to present the compilation of data in the scientific literature on the chemical composition and nutritional value of the bee brood of A. mellifera species and subspecies as edible foods. For this, a comprehensive search of the scientific literature was carried out using the databases ScienceDirect, Scopus, Pub-Med, BOn, and SciELO. Appropriate keywords were used for the search to reach the research works that addressed the topics of the review. The results showed that bee brood has considerable quantities of protein, fat and carbohydrates. The most abundant amino acids are leucine and lysine (these two being essential amino acids) and aspartic acid, glutamic acid, and proline (these three being non-essential amino acids). As for the fatty acids, bee broods contain approximately equal fractions of saturated and monounsaturated fatty acids, while the polyunsaturated fatty acids are negligible. The dietary minerals present in higher quantities are potassium, phosphorus, and magnesium, and the most abundant vitamins are vitamin C and niacin; choline is also present, although it is not a true vitamin. Although bee brood from A. mellifera has potential for human consumption as a nutrient-rich food, there are still many aspects that need to be further studied in the future, such as safety and hazards linked to possible regular consumption. Exploring the interactions between compulsive buying and dietary practices is crucial in terms of understanding these behaviors from a behavioral standpoint. This paper investigates the relationships between compulsive buying (CB) and non-compulsive buying (non-CB), focusing on the influence of dietary habits (TFEQ), body mass index (BMI), and emotional valence. The study involved a representative sample of 707 Polish adults and employed tools such as the Compulsive Buying Scale, the Three-Factor Eating Questionnaire (TFEQ), and the Emotional Appetite Questionnaire (EMAQ). The results revealed that compulsive buyers (CBs) had higher levels of cognitive restraint, emotional eating, and uncontrolled eating than non-compulsive buyers (non-CBs). Importantly, emotional valence—which includes both positive and negative emotions—significantly influenced dietary behaviors, illustrating the complex role emotions play in food consumption. Additionally, the results highlighted that the BMI significantly affects these relationships, suggesting different eating patterns across BMI categories. This study underscores the need for targeted interventions focusing on psychological and nutritional aspects to address these interconnected compulsive behaviors. Full article

Time-Restricted Eating Improves Glycemic Control in Patients with Type 2 Diabetes: A Meta-Analysis and Systematic Review

Time-restricted eating (TRE), a dietary strategy that aligns food intake with circadian rhythms, has emerged as a promising non-pharmacological approach for improving glycemic control in patients with type 2 diabetes. This systematic review and meta-analysis evaluated the effects of TRE on glycemic outcomes by analyzing eight randomized controlled trials involving 312 participants with type 2 diabetes or impaired fasting glucose. Meta-analyses of six eligible studies demonstrated that TRE significantly reduced fasting glucose (mean difference [MD]: −0.74 mmol/L; 95% CI: −1.13 to −0.36) and glycated hemoglobin (ΔHbA1c) (MD: −0.11%; 95% CI: −0.15 to −0.07) and increased time in range (TIR) for blood glucose (MD: +10.51%; 95% CI: 6.81 to 14.21). Improvements in fasting glucose and HbA1c were modest but consistent, while the increase in TIR showed no between-study heterogeneity, suggesting a robust and reproducible benefit of TRE on glycemic stability. These findings support the clinical feasibility and effectiveness of TRE as a dietary intervention in diabetes management. However, further high-quality trials with standardized protocols and longer follow-up are needed to confirm long-term efficacy and inform guidelines. Full article

In this study, a composite film with dual antioxidant and antibacterial properties was prepared by combining 2% chitosan and 7% gelatin (2:1, w:w), with D-carvone (0–4%) as the primary active component. The effect of D-carvone content on the performance of the composite films was systematically investigated. The results showed that adding 1% D-carvone increased the water contact angle by 28%, increased the elongation at break by 35%, and decreased the WVTR by 18%. FTIR and SEM confirmed that ≤2% D-carvone uniformly bonded with the substrate through hydrogen bonds, and the film was dense and non-porous. In addition, the DPPH scavenging rate of the 1–2% D-carvone composite film increased to about 30–40%, and the ABTS+ scavenging rate increased to about 35–40%; the antibacterial effect on Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus increased by more than 70%. However, when the addition amount was too high (exceeding 2%), the composite film became agglomerated, microporous, and phase-separated, affecting the film performance, and due to its own taste, it reduced the sensory quality of the noodles. Comprehensively, the composites showed better performance when the content of D-carvone was 1–2% and also the best effect for freshness preservation in Xinjiang ramen. This study provides a broad application prospect for natural terpene compound-based composite films in the field of high-moisture, multi-fat food preservation, and provides a theoretical basis and practical guidance for the development of efficient and safe food packaging materials. In the future, the composite film can be further optimized, and the effect of flavor can be further explored to meet the needs of different food preservation methods. Full article

Drug repurposing or drug repositioning is the process of identifying new therapeutic uses for approved or investigational drugs beyond the original treatment indication. The discovery of new drugs for cancer therapy needs this cost-effective and time-saving alternative strategy to traditional drug development for a rapid clinical translation in Phase II/III studies, especially for unmet medical needs and rare diseases. Neuroendocrine tumors (NETs) are a heterogeneous group of rare neoplasms arising from cells of the neuroendocrine system that, though often indolent, can be aggressive and metastatic. In this context, drug repurposing has emerged as a promising strategy to improve treatment options due to the limited number of effective treatments and the heterogeneity of the disease. Indeed, a large number of non-oncology drugs have the potential to address more than one target that could be therapeutic for cancer patients. Although many repurposed drugs are used off-label, efficacy for the new use must be demonstrated in clinical trials. Within regulatory frameworks, both the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the European Medicines Agency (EMA) have procedures to reduce the need for extensive new studies and to expedite the review of drugs for serious conditions when preliminary evidence indicates substantial clinical improvement over available therapy. In spite of several advantages, including reduced development time, lower costs, known safety profiles, and faster regulatory approval, difficulty in obtaining new patents for old drugs with limited protection for intellectual property may reduce commercial returns and disincentivize investments. This review aims to provide comprehensive information on some marketed drugs currently under investigation to be repurposed or used in clinical practice for NETs and to discuss the major clinical challenges. Although drug repurposing is a useful strategy for early access to medicines, the monitoring of the clinical benefit of oncologic drugs during the post-marketing authorization is crucial to support the safety and effectiveness of treatments. The present study highlights the critical role of surface type, insect species, and exposure duration in determining the efficacy of surface-applied insecticides in stored-product pest management. Four insecticides were sprayed and evaluated on different surfaces (concrete, metallic, plastic, and ceramic) against two beetles: the red flour beetle and the tobacco beetle. Alpha-cypermethrin and spinosad exhibited rapid and high efficacy, particularly on non-porous surfaces such as metal and ceramic, whereas pirimiphos-methyl was less effective initially and required extended exposure to achieve complete mortality, especially against Tribolium castaneum. In contrast, Lasioderma serricorne showed greater susceptibility across all insecticides and surfaces. Spinosad maintained high efficacy across all surface types, suggesting broader applicability under variable conditions. The reduced performance of insecticides on concrete surfaces underscores the influence of substrate porosity on insecticide bioavailability. Additionally, the observed delayed mortality effect in all treatments indicates that even brief exposure can result in lethal outcomes, emphasizing the long-term potential of these applications. These findings underscore the need for surface-specific application strategies and support the integration of surface treatments into comprehensive pest management programs. Further research is warranted under simulated field conditions to assess residual efficacy over time and in the presence of food, thereby enhancing the relevance of laboratory findings to real-world storage environments. Phycocyanin is a natural, non-toxic, blue pigment-protein with many commercial applications. Its exploitation in various biotechnological sectors strongly depends on its purity grade (P). Phycocyanin is largely used in food industry where a low purity grade is required, while its widespread use in sectors requiring a higher purity is hampered by the cost of large-scale industrial production. Industry, in fact, needs simple, easily scalable and cost-effective procedures to ensure sustainable production of high-quality pigment. In this work we applied the innovative two-step ultrasound-based process UltraBlu to the pilot-scale production of phycocyanin. A total of 50 L of biomass suspension of commercial Spirulina were processed in batch mode. The pigment extract was obtained in one day, including the biomass harvesting. Food/cosmetic grade (P = 1.41–1.76) and a good yield (Y = 59.2–76.1%) were achieved. The initial results obtained suggest that UltraBlu can be an effective scalable process suitable to produce phycocyanin also on an industrial scale. Full article

This study investigates farmers’ knowledge, perceptions, and adaptation strategies to climate change in Rwanda’s Eastern Province, integrating social and physical science approaches. Analyzing meteorological data (1981–2021) and surveys from 204 farmers across five districts, we assessed climate trends and adaptation behaviors using statistical methods (descriptive statistics, Chi-square, logistic regression, Regional Kendall test, dynamic linear state-space model). Results show that 85% of farmers acknowledge climate change, with 54% observing temperature increases and 37% noting rainfall declines. Climate data confirm significant rises in annual minimum (+0.76 °C/decade) and mean temperatures (+0.48 °C/decade), with the largest seasonal increase (+0.86 °C/decade) in June–August. Rainfall trends indicate a non-significant decrease in March–May and a slight increase in September–December. Farmers report crop failures, yield reductions, and food shortages as major climate impacts. Common adaptations include agroforestry, crop diversification, and fertilizer use, though financial limitations, information gaps, and input scarcity impede adoption. Despite limited formal education (53.9% primary, 22.3% no formal education), indigenous knowledge aids seasonal prediction. Farm location, group membership, and farming goal are key adaptation enablers. These findings emphasize the need for targeted policies and climate communication to enhance rural resilience by strengthening smallholder farmer support systems for effective climate adaptation. Aquaculture is a key food production sector responsible for meeting the nutritional needs of a rapidly growing global population. However, the emergence of disease outbreaks has become a major challenge for the aquaculture industry, resulting in significant economic losses. The use of costly and toxic antibiotics for treatment has a negative impact on the aquatic environment. Consequently, there has been a growing interest in probiotics as a non-antibiotic approach to manage disease outbreaks and improve fish performance. The use of the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae (SC) has shown remarkable benefits in aquaculture. In February 2025, a systematic search was conducted based on the Web of Science (WoS) database for the period 2015–2025 to identify relevant studies investigating the beneficial effects of SC in aquaculture. After searching on WoS, 466 documents were found and analyzed using R-bibliometric package for comprehensive analysis to identify research gap, trends, and distribution of global literature that focuses on SC in aquaculture. The most relevant and recent articles were reviewed, summarized and discussed. The yeast SC have shown a wide range of benefits, including improved growth performance, feed efficiency, enhanced diversity of the gut microbiome and immune response. The implementation of SC is becoming a recent trend and its efficacy in aquatic environments has been thoroughly investigated. This review aims to provide a valuable insight into SC as one of the most important aquaculture probiotics. It also emphasizes the need for further research to fully understand its benefits and the way it works. Full article

Background: Adolescence is characterized by physical and psychosocial changes. This implies modifying or implementing correct nutritional habits at an early age, which would have an impact on a healthy adult life. Objectives: The FFQ of dietary patterns has not been estimated in the population of adolescents. Therefore, conducting a pilot, cross-sectional, comparative, and correlational study, we sought to identify frequently consumed foods in an adolescent population. Methods: As part of the methodology, a Food Frequency Questionnaire (FFQ) was given to a non-probability convenience sample of 178 subjects aged 14 to 19 years to evaluate the most frequently consumed foods. Results: This study showed that the diet of Mexican adolescents was characterized with little variability in the foods consumed: 28.20% of the population had a good consumption of milk (1 to 5 serving/day), 16.50% of sugars, and 16% of cereals, while only less than 15% had a good consumption of source animal foods, fruits and vegetables, oils, and fat. Conclusions: Mexican adolescents have demonstrated that their diet is poorly varied. Adolescence is an important period in life that can define habitual dietary intake, and therefore, it is crucial to promote healthy eating at this age. Further research and appropriate public policies are needed. Full article
