Background: The rapid advancement in artificial intelligence (AI) has fundamentally reshaped gut microbiome research by enabling high-resolution analysis of complex, high-dimensional microbial communities and their functional interactions with the human host. Objective: This narrative review aims to synthesize recent methodological advances in AI-driven gut microbiome research and to evaluate their translational relevance for therapeutic optimization, personalized nutrition, and precision medicine. Methods: A narrative literature review was conducted using PubMed, Google Scholar, Web of Science, and IEEE Xplore, focusing on peer-reviewed studies published between approximately 2015 and early 2025. Representative articles were selected based on relevance to AI methodologies applied to gut microbiome analysis, including machine learning, deep learning, transformer-based models, graph neural networks, generative AI, and multi-omics integration frameworks. Additional seminal studies were identified through manual screening of reference lists. Results: The reviewed literature demonstrates that AI enables robust identification of diagnostic microbial signatures, prediction of individual responses to microbiome-targeted therapies, and design of personalized nutritional and pharmacological interventions using in silico simulations and digital twin models. AI-driven multi-omics integration—encompassing metagenomics, metatranscriptomics, metabolomics, proteomics, and clinical data—has improved functional interpretation of host–microbiome interactions and enhanced predictive performance across diverse disease contexts. For example, AI-guided personalized nutrition models have achieved AUC exceeding 0.8 for predicting postprandial glycemic responses, while community-scale metabolic modeling frameworks have accurately forecast individualized short-chain fatty acid production. Conclusions: Despite substantial progress, key challenges remain, including data heterogeneity, limited model interpretability, population bias, and barriers to clinical deployment. Future research should prioritize standardized data pipelines, explainable and privacy-preserving AI frameworks, and broader population representation. Collectively, these advances position AI as a cornerstone technology for translating gut microbiome data into actionable insights for diagnostics, therapeutics, and precision nutrition. Full article

The residential energy sector contributes substantially to global energy-related emissions. Effective energy management requires an understanding occupant behavior through activity detection and habit identification. Recent advances in artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) enable the automatic detection of user activities and prediction of energy needs based on historical consumption data. Non-intrusive load monitoring (NILM) facilitates device-level disaggregation without additional sensors, supporting demand forecasting and behavior-aware control in Home Energy Management Systems (HEMSs). This review synthesizes various AI and ML approaches for detecting user activities and energy habits in HEMSs from 2020 to 2025. The analyses revealed that deep learning (DL) models, with their ability to capture complex temporal and nonlinear patterns in multisensor data, achieve superior accuracy in activity detection and load forecasting, with occupancy detection reaching 95–99% accuracy. Hybrid systems combining neural networks and optimization algorithms demonstrate enhanced robustness, but challenges remain in limited cross-building generalization, insufficient interpretability of deep models, and the absence of dataset standardized. Future work should prioritize lightweight, explainable edge-ready models, federated learning, and integration with digital twins and control systems. It should also extend energy optimization toward occupant wellbeing and grid flexibility, using standardized protocols and open datasets for ensuring trustworthy and sustainability. Full article

This paper presents a systematic review conducted under the PRISMA (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses) framework, analyzing 286 scientific articles focused on vibration-based predictive maintenance strategies for wind turbines within the context of advanced Prognostics and Health Management (PHM). The review combines international standards (ISO 10816, ISO 13373, and IEC 61400) with recent developments in sensing technologies, including piezoelectric accelerometers, microelectromechanical systems (MEMS), and fiber Bragg grating (FBG) sensors. Classical signal processing techniques, such as the Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) and wavelet-based methods, are identified as key preprocessing tools for feature extraction prior to the application of machine-learning-based diagnostic algorithms. Special emphasis is placed on machine learning and deep learning techniques, including Support Vector Machines (SVM), Random Forest (RF), Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN), Long Short-Term Memory networks (LSTM), and autoencoders, as well as on hybrid digital twin architectures that enable accurate Remaining Useful Life (RUL) estimation and support autonomous decision-making processes. The bibliometric and case study analysis covering the period 2020–2025 reveals a strong shift toward multisource data fusion—integrating vibration, acoustic, temperature, and Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) data—and the adoption of cloud-based platforms for real-time monitoring, particularly in offshore wind farms where physical accessibility is constrained. The results indicate that vibration-based predictive maintenance strategies can reduce operation and maintenance costs by more than 20%, extend component service life by up to threefold, and achieve turbine availability levels between 95% and 98%. These outcomes confirm that vibration-driven PHM frameworks represent a fundamental pillar for the development of smart, sustainable, and resilient next-generation wind energy systems. Full article

To address the limitations of parameter drift in physical models and poor generalization in data-driven methods, this paper proposes a self-evolving digital twin framework for PMSM thermal safety. The framework integrates a dynamic-batch Bayesian calibration (DBBC) algorithm and a hierarchical physics-aware network (HPA-Net). First, the DBBC eliminates plant–model mismatch by robustly identifying stochastic parameters from operational data. Subsequently, the HPA-Net adopts a “physics-augmented” strategy, utilizing the calibrated physical model as a dynamic prior to directly infer high-fidelity temperature via a hierarchical training scheme. Furthermore, a real-time demagnetization safety margin (DSM) monitoring strategy is integrated to eliminate “false safe” zones. Experimental validation on a PMSM test bench confirms the superior performance of the proposed framework, which achieves a Root Mean Square Error (RMSE) of 0.919 °C for the stator winding and 1.603 °C for the permanent magnets. The proposed digital twin ensures robust thermal safety even under unseen operating conditions, transforming the monitoring system into a proactive safety guardian. Full article

The rapid evolution of smart transportation systems necessitates the integration of advanced sensing technologies capable of supporting the real-time, reliable, and cost-effective monitoring of road infrastructure. Fiber-optic sensor (FOS) technologies, given their high sensitivity, immunity to electromagnetic interference, and suitability for harsh environments, have emerged as promising tools for enabling intelligent transportation infrastructure. This review critically examines the current landscape of classical mechanical and electrical sensor realization in monitoring solutions. Focus is also given to fiber-optic-sensor-based solutions for smart road applications, encompassing both well-established techniques such as Fiber Bragg Grating (FBG) sensors and distributed sensing systems, as well as emerging hybrid sensor networks. The article examines the most topical physical parameters that can be measured by FOSs in road infrastructure monitoring to support traffic monitoring, structural health assessment, weigh-in-motion (WIM) system development, pavement condition evaluation, and vehicle classification. In addition, strategies for FOS integration with digital twins, machine learning, artificial intelligence, quantum sensing, and Internet of Things (IoT) platforms are analyzed to highlight their potential for data-driven infrastructure management. Limitations related to deployment, scalability, long-term reliability, and standardization are also discussed. The review concludes by identifying key technological gaps and proposing future research directions to accelerate the adoption of FOS technologies in next-generation road transportation systems. Background: Artificial intelligence (AI) in urban and multimodal transport has demonstrated strong potential; however, real-world deployment remains constrained by limited governance-ready design, fragmented data ecosystems, and single-objective optimization practices. The resulting problem is that agencies lack a reproducible, deployment-ready architecture that links data fusion, multi-objective optimization, and electrification constraints into daily multimodal operational decision making. Methods: This study presents a systematic review and synthesis of 145 peer-reviewed studies on network control, green routing, digital twins, and electric-bus scheduling, conducted in accordance with PRISMA 2020 using predefined inclusion and exclusion criteria. Based on these findings, a deployment-oriented operational AI framework is developed. Results: The proposed architecture comprises five interoperable layers—data ingestion, streaming analytics, optimization services, decision evaluation, and governance monitoring—supporting scalability, reproducibility, and transparency. Rather than producing a single optimal solution, the framework provides decision-ready trade-offs across service quality, cost efficiency, and sustainability while accounting for uncertainty, reliability, and electrification constraints. The approach is solver-agnostic, supporting evolutionary and learning-based techniques. Conclusions: A Thessaloniki-based multimodal case study demonstrates how reproducible AI workflows can connect real-time data streams, optimization, and institutional decision making for continuous multimodal transport management under operational constraints. Engineering is suffering a significant change driven by the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) into engineering optimization in design, analysis, and operational efficiency across numerous disciplines. This review synthesizes the current landscape of AI-driven optimization methodologies and their impacts on engineering applications. In the literature, several frameworks for AI-based engineering optimization have been identified: (1) machine learning models are trained as objective and constraint functions for optimization problems; (2) machine learning techniques are used to improve the efficiency of optimization algorithms; (3) neural networks approximate complex simulation models such as finite element analysis (FEA) and computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and this makes it possible to optimize complex engineering systems; and (4) machine learning predicts design parameters/initial solutions that are subsequently optimized. Fundamental AI technologies, such as artificial neural networks and deep learning, are examined in this paper, along with commonly used AI-assisted optimization strategies. Representative applications of AI-driven engineering optimization have been surveyed in this paper across multiple fields, including mechanical and aerospace engineering, civil engineering, electrical and computer engineering, chemical and materials engineering, energy and management. These studies demonstrate how AI enables significant improvements in computational modelling, predictive analytics, and generative design while effectively handling complex multi-objective constraints. Despite these advancements, challenges remain in areas such as data quality, model interpretability, and computational cost, particularly in real-time environments. Through a systematic analysis of recent case studies and emerging trends, this paper provides a critical assessment of the state of the art and identifies promising research directions, including physics-informed neural networks, digital twins, and human–AI collaborative optimization frameworks. The findings highlight AI’s potential to redefine engineering optimization paradigms, while emphasizing the need for robust, scalable, and ethically aligned implementations. Full article

Background: Cold chain distribution in Agri-Biotech supply chains faces serious challenges due to strict time windows, high temperature sensitivity, and conflict between different operational objectives, and conventional static approaches are unable to address these complexities. Methods: In this study, an integrated decision support framework is presented that combines multi-objective fuzzy modeling and an adaptive digital twin to simultaneously manage logistics costs, product quality degradation, and service time compliance under operational uncertainty. Key uncertain parameters are modeled using triangular fuzzy numbers, and the digital twin dynamically updates the decision parameters based on operational information. The proposed framework is evaluated using real industrial data and comprehensive computational experiments. Results: The results show that the proposed approach is able to produce stable and balanced solutions, provides near-optimal performance in benchmark cases, and is highly robust to demand fluctuations and temperature deviations. Digital twin activation significantly improves the convergence behavior and stability of the solutions. Conclusions: The proposed framework provides a reliable and practical tool for adaptive planning of cold chain distribution in Agri-Biotech industries and effectively reduces the gap between advanced optimization models and real-world operational requirements. The increasing complexity of modern electrical networks poses significant challenges in terms of monitoring, maintenance, and operational efficiency. However, current planning approaches often lack a unified integration of real-time data and predictive modeling. In this context, Digital Twins (DTs) emerge as a promising solution, as they enable the creation of virtual replicas of physical assets. This research addresses the lack of standardized technical frameworks by proposing a novel mathematical optimization model for grid planning based on DTs. The proposed methodology integrates comprehensive architecture (frontend/backend), specific data standards (IEC 61850), and a linear optimization formulation to minimize operational costs and enhance reliability. Case studies such as DTEK Grids and American Electric Power are analyzed to validate the approach. The results demonstrate that the proposed framework can reduce planning errors by approximately 15% and improve fault prediction accuracy to 99%, validating the DTs as a key tool for the digital transformation of the energy sector towards Industry 5.0. To achieve energy savings, reduce consumption, and support the “dual-carbon” strategy in China, this study applies digital twin technology to investigate the centralized air-conditioning water system of a metro-station HVAC installation and develops a high-fidelity digital twin model to reveal the thermal delay and thermal attenuation characteristics of the pipeline network. Using the noncausal modeling approach of the Modelica language, a full digital twin representation of the centralized air-conditioning water network is constructed by covering chillers, cooling towers, pumps, terminal units, the pipeline network, etc. The model is validated against real operation data to ensure high fidelity. Validation shows the predicted chilled water flow rate of the digital twin model agrees well with the measured chilled water flow rate with an RMSE of 0.27 kg/s. Validation also shows the difference is about 0.3 °C between the digital twin prediction and the measurement in the main pipe. Based on the validation digital twin model, the thermal delay and thermal attenuation characteristics of the centralized air-conditioning water system are seriously evaluated. The results indicate that branch K3, due to its longest transport distance, exhibits a delay of 227 s. The overall thermal delay of the system reaches 7.5 min. The temperature attenuation of this water system is about 0.2 °C due to heat loss through pipe walls. The findings may offer theoretical support for the optimal regulation and control, fault detection, and anomaly identification of this centralized air-conditioning water system. Full article

Transformation involves reconfiguring organizational structures, decision-making logics, and value creation models around connectivity, automation, and predictive intelligence. In practice, it includes the adoption of smart port technologies such as the Internet of Things, 5G communication networks, digital twins, blockchain-based trade documentation, and artificial intelligence applied to vessel scheduling and cargo planning. It also encompasses collaborative platforms like port community systems that link shipping companies, terminal operators, freight forwarders, customs, and hinterland transport providers into data-driven ecosystems. Industrial aluminum-block heating processes exhibit nonlinear dynamics, substantial time delays, and stringent requirements for fault detection and diagnosis, especially in semiconductor manufacturing and other high-precision electronic processes, where slight temperature deviations can accelerate device degradation or even cause catastrophic failures. To address these challenges, this study presents a digital twin-based intelligent heating platform for aluminum blocks with a dual-artificial-intelligence framework (dual-AI) for control and diagnosis, which is applicable to multi-port aluminum-block heating systems. The system enables real-time observation and simulation of high-temperature operational conditions via virtual-real interaction. The platform precisely regulates a nonlinear temperature control system with a prolonged time delay by integrating a conventional proportional–integral–derivative (PID) controller with a Levenberg–Marquardt-optimized backpropagation (LM-optimized BP) neural network. Simultaneously, a relay is employed to sever the connection to the heater, thereby simulating an open-circuit fault. Throughout this procedure, sensor data are gathered simultaneously, facilitating the creation of a spatiotemporal time-series dataset under both normal and fault conditions. A one-dimensional convolutional neural network (1D-CNN) is trained to attain high-accuracy fault detection and localization. PID+LM-BP achieves a response time of about 200 s in simulation. In the 100 °C to 105 °C step experiment, it reaches a settling time of 6 min with a 3 °C overshoot. Fault detection uses a 0.38 °C threshold defined based on the absolute minute-to-minute change of the 1-min mean temperature. Full article

In the context of the digital transformation of industrial production, the need for intelligent maintenance and repair systems capable of ensuring reliable operation of machine-tool equipment without operator involvement is growing. This present study reviews the current state and future development of diagnostic and condition-monitoring systems for metalworking machine tools. A review of international standards and existing solutions from domestic and international vendors in vibration diagnostics has been conducted. Particular attention is paid to non-intrusive vibration diagnostics, digital twins, multiparametric analysis methods, and neural network approaches to failure prediction. The architecture of the developed system is presented. The concept of the system is developed in full compliance with Russian and international standards of vibration diagnostics. At its core, the comprehensive digital twin relies on machine learning methods. The proposed architecture is a predictive-maintenance system built on interconnected digital twin realizations: the dynamic machine passport of a unit, operational data, and a comprehensive digital twin of the machine-tool equipment. The potential of neuromorphic computing on a hardware platform is being considered as a promising element for local-condition classification and emergency protection. At the current development stage, the operating principle has been demonstrated along with the integration into the control loop. The system is now at the beginning of laboratory testing. It demonstrates capabilities for comprehensive assessment of the equipment’s technical condition based on multiparametric data, short-term vibration trend forecasting using a Long Short-Term Memory network, and state classification using a Multilayer Perceptron model. The results of the system’s testing on a turning machining center have been analyzed. Full article

Cybersecurity and Resilience of Smart Grids: A Review of Threat Landscape, Incidents, and Emerging Solutions

The digital transformation of electric power systems into smart grids has significantly expanded the cybersecurity risk landscape of the energy sector. While advanced sensing, communication, automation, and data-driven control improve efficiency, flexibility, and renewable energy integration, they also introduce complex cyber–physical interdependencies and new vulnerabilities across interconnected technical and organisational domains. This study adopts a scoping review methodology in accordance with PRISMA-ScR to systematically analyse smart grid cybersecurity from an architecture-aware and resilience-oriented perspective. Peer-reviewed scientific literature and authoritative institutional sources are synthesised to examine modern smart grid architectures, key security challenges, major cyberthreats, and documented real-world cyber incidents affecting energy infrastructure up to 2025. The review systematically links architectural characteristics such as field devices, communication networks, software platforms, data pipelines, and externally operated services to specific threat mechanisms and observed attack patterns, illustrating how cyber risk propagates across interconnected grid components. The findings show that cybersecurity challenges in smart grids arise not only from technical vulnerabilities but also from architectural dependencies, software supply chains, operational constraints, and cross-sector coupling. Based on the analysis of historical incidents and emerging research, the study identifies key defensive strategies, including zero-trust architectures, advanced monitoring and anomaly detection, secure software lifecycle management, digital twins for cyber–physical testing, and cyber-resilient grid design. The review concludes that cybersecurity in smart grids should be treated as a systemic and persistent condition, requiring resilience-oriented approaches that prioritise detection, containment, recovery, and safe operation under adverse conditions. Characterizing tight reservoirs is challenging due to the complex pore structure and strong heterogeneity at various scales. Current digital rock physics often struggles to reconcile high-resolution imaging with representative sample sizes, and 3D digital cores are frequently used primarily as visualization tools rather than predictive, computable platforms. Thus, a clear methodological gap persists: high-resolution models typically lack macroscopic geological features, while existing 3D digital models are seldom leveraged for quantitative, predictive analysis. This study, based on a full-diameter core sample of a single lithology (gray-black shale), aims to bridge this gap by developing an integrated workflow to construct a high-fidelity, computable 3D model that connects the micro–nano to the macroscopic scale. The core was scanned using high-resolution X-ray computed tomography (CT) at 0.4 μm resolution. The raw CT images were processed through a dedicated pipeline to mitigate artifacts and noise, followed by segmentation using Otsu’s algorithm and region-growing techniques in Avizo 9.0 to isolate minerals, pores, and the matrix. The segmented model was converted into an unstructured tetrahedral finite element mesh within ANSYS 2024 Workbench, with quality control (aspect ratio ≤ 3; skewness ≤ 0.4), enabling mechanical property assignment and simulation. The digital core model was rigorously validated against physical laboratory measurements, showing excellent agreement with relative errors below 5% for key properties, including porosity (4.52% vs. 4.615%), permeability (0.0186 mD vs. 0.0192 mD), and elastic modulus (38.2 GPa vs. 39.5 GPa). Pore network analysis quantified the poor connectivity of the tight reservoir, revealing an average coordination number of 2.8 and a pore throat radius distribution of 0.05–0.32 μm. The presented workflow successfully creates a quantitatively validated “digital twin” of a full-diameter core. It provides a tangible solution to the scale-representativeness trade-off and transitions digital core analysis from a visualization tool to a computable platform for predicting key reservoir properties, such as permeability and elastic modulus, through numerical simulation, offering a robust technical means for the accurate evaluation of tight reservoirs.
