In highly urbanised and industrialised settings, managing environmental pressures and enhancing urban resilience demand integrated, spatially explicit approaches. This study presents a methodological framework that integrates topographic data, land cover information, and open geodata to produce a high-resolution vulnerability map. A multi-criteria analysis was performed using indicators such as land use, population density, proximity to emission sources, vegetation cover, and sensitive services (e.g., schools and hospitals). The result is a high-resolution vulnerability map that classifies the urban, peri-urban, and coastal zones into five levels of environmental risk. These evaluation levels are derived from geospatial analyses combining pollutant dispersion modelling with land-use classification, enabling the identification of the most vulnerable urban zones. These findings support evidence-based planning and can guide local governments and environmental agencies in prioritising Nature-based Solutions (NBSs), enhancing ecological connectivity, and reducing exposure for vulnerable populations. Anxiety has become an important issue affecting students’ mental health. There is some evidence that mindfulness-based art interventions (MBAIs) can reduce students’ anxiety symptoms. However, some studies have shown the opposite view. Therefore, it is necessary to explore whether MBAIs are effective in alleviating students’ anxiety. In this meta-analysis, we chose 17 articles that met the criteria for inclusion, involving a total of 1548 participants, to figure out how big an impact the interventions had on student anxiety as a whole. The results show that MBAIs can reduce students’ anxiety (g = −0.387, p = 0.000). The effect size varies based on different moderators, including learning stage, sample size, intervention type, research design, measuring instrument, and intervention duration. Intervention type, research design, and measuring instrument are significant moderators. Specifically, the mindfulness-based art intervention (MBAI) showed stronger effects than the mandala coloring activity. Single-group experimental designs showed significantly higher effect sizes than studies that included a control group, and studies that used other measurement instruments had significantly higher effect sizes than those that used the State–Trait Anxiety Inventory. On this basis, the researchers put forward specific suggestions based on MBAIs to alleviate the anxiety of students from different educational backgrounds. However, due to the nascent nature of this field, the number of included articles is relatively small. The effectiveness of the research needs further testing. Full article

This article focuses on activities addressed in the European project hydrogen lightweight & innovative tank for zero-emission aircraft, H2ELIOS. The authors propose a preliminary approach oriented to the design of a structural health monitoring SHM system conceived for a cryo-tank liquid hydrogen storage for medium range vehicles. The system was ideated to be installed on board and operating during service, to provide early detection and localization of potential damage, critical both in terms of safety and maintenance. The use of optical fibers for strain measurement is justified, on one hand, by the capability of pure silica fiber to prevent hydrogen darkening effects and, on the other hand, by the absence of metal components, which eliminates the risk of embrittlement. In detail, distributed and fiber Bragg grating FBG sensors designed for this specific application have demonstrated reliable monitoring capabilities, even after exposure to hydrogen and at cryogenic temperatures. Furthermore, another key contribution of this preliminary activity is the analysis of thermoplastic material faults by correlating damage characteristics with static and dynamic response. This is due to the fact that the investigated physics strongly depend on the nature of occurring damage. Achievements lie in the demonstrated ability to assess the health status of the reference composite structure, establishing the first steps for a future qualification of the proprietary system, made of commercial and original hardware and software. Background: Thallium is a metal that is ubiquitous in our natural environment. Despite its potential for high toxicity, thallium is understudied and not regulated in food. The California Department of Public Health was alerted to a household cluster of elevated urine thallium levels noted among a mother (peak 5.6 µg/g creatinine; adult reference: ≤0.4 µg/g creatinine) and her three young children (peak 10.5 µg/g creatinine; child reference: ≤0.8 µg/g creatinine). Objectives: This case report identifies questions raised after a public health investigation linked a household’s thallium exposure to a commercially available food product. We provide an overview of the public health investigation. We then explore concerns, such as gaps in toxicological data and limited surveillance of thallium in the food supply, which make management of individual and population exposure risks challenging. Methods: We highlight findings from a cross-agency investigation, including a household exposure survey, sampling of possible environmental and dietary exposures (ICP-MS analysis measured thallium in kale chips at 1.98 mg/kg and 2.15 mg/kg), and monitoring of symptoms and urine thallium levels after the source was removed. We use regulatory and research findings to describe the challenges and opportunities in characterizing the scale of thallium in our food supply and effects of dietary exposures on health. Discussion: Thallium can bioaccumulate in our food system, particularly in brassica vegetables like kale. Thallium concentration in foods can also be affected by manufacturing processes, such as dehydration. We have limited surveillance data nationally regarding this metal in our food supply. Dietary reviews internationally show increased thallium intake in toddlers. Limited information is available about low-dose or chronic exposures, particularly among children, although emerging evidence shows that there might be risks associated at lower levels than previously thought. Improved toxicological studies are needed to guide reference doses and food safety standards. Promising action towards enhanced monitoring of thallium is being pursued by food safety agencies internationally, and research is underway to deepen our understanding of thallium toxicity. Background: Empowerment during pregnancy is linked to improved maternal and infant health outcomes and greater maternal well-being. Group Antenatal Care (GANC), a participant-centered model of care, promotes empowerment, active engagement, and the deconstruction of hierarchy between participants and care providers. It combines health assessment, interactive learning, and community building. While empowerment is a core concept of GANC, the ways it manifests and the elements that facilitate it remain unclear. Method: We conducted a generic qualitative study across four organizations in Brussels, using multiple data collection methods. This included interviews with 13 participants and 21 observations of GANC sessions, combining both the insider and outsider perspective. An adapted version of the Pregnancy-Related Empowerment Scale (PRES) guided the interviews guide and thematic analysis. Results: We identified seven themes that capture how empowerment occurs in GANC: peer connectedness, provider connectedness, skillful decision-making, responsibility, sense of control, taking action, and gaining voice. Several aspects of GANC contribute to empowerment, particularly the role of facilitators. Conclusions: This study highlights how GANC enhances empowerment during pregnancy through interpersonal, internal, and external processes. Important components within GANC that support this process include the group-based format and the interactive nature of the discussions. The presence of skillful GANC facilitators is an essential prerequisite. In a diverse and often vulnerable context like Brussels, strengthening empowerment through GANC presents challenges but is especially crucial. Full article

The increasing demand for food necessitates that agri-food systems adopt innovative techniques to enhance food production while optimizing the use of limited resources, such as water. In agriculture, hydrogels are being increasingly used to enhance water retention and reduce irrigation requirements. However, most of these materials are based on synthetic polymers that are not biodegradable. This raises serious environmental and health concerns, highlighting the urgent need for sustainable, biodegradable alternatives. Biomass-derived from agro-industrial waste presents a substantial potential for producing hydrogels, which can effectively function as water collectors and suppliers for crops. This review article provides a comprehensive overview of recent advancements in the application of agro-industrial waste for the formulation of hydrogels. Additionally, it offers a critical analysis of the development of hydrogels utilizing natural and compostable materials. Agro-industrial and food waste, which are rich in hemicellulose and cellulose, have been utilized to enhance the mechanical properties and water absorption capacity of hydrogels. These biomaterials hold significant potential for the development of effective hydrogels in agricultural applications; they can be either hybrid or natural materials that exhibit efficacy in enhancing seed germination, improving water retention capabilities, and facilitating the controlled release of fertilizers. Natural hydrogels derived from agro-industrial waste present a sustainable technological alternative that is environmentally benign. Full article

Biomass and other solid wastes create potential environmental and health hazards in our modern society. Conversion of the wastes into energy presents a promising avenue for sustainable energy generation. However, the feasibility of the approach is limited by the challenges in material handling because of the special properties of the materials. Despite their critical importance, the complexities of material handling often evade scrutiny until operational implementation. This paper highlights the challenges inherent in standard solid material-handling processes, preceded by a concise review of common solid waste typologies and their physical properties, particularly those related to biomass and biowastes. It delves into the complexities of material flow, storage, compaction, agglomeration, separation, transport, and hazard management. Specialised characterisation techniques essential for informed process design are also discussed to mitigate operational risks. In conclusion, this paper emphasises the necessity of a tailored framework before the establishment of any further conversion processes. Given the heterogeneous nature of biomaterials, material-handling equipment must demonstrate adaptability to accommodate the substantial variability in material properties in large-scale production. This approach aims to enhance feasibility and efficacy of any energy conversion initiatives by using biomass or other solid wastes, thereby advancing sustainable resource utilisation and environmental stewardship. Background and Objectives: Periodontitis is a chronic inflammatory disease that leads to progressive destruction of periodontal tissues and remains a significant global health burden. While conventional therapies such as scaling and root planning offer short-term improvements, they often fall short in maintaining long-term microbial control, underscoring the need for adjunctive strategies. This study evaluated the clinical and microbiological effects of a novel essential oil (EO)-based gel—SmartGel OV—formulated with Origanum vulgare. Materials and Methods: Thirty adults with periodontitis were enrolled in a 4-month observational study, during which SmartGel OV was applied daily via gingival massage. Clinical outcomes and bacterial profiles were assessed through probing measurements and real-time PCR analysis. Additionally, a pilot AI-based tool was explored as a supplemental method to monitor inflammation progression through intraoral images. Results: Significant reductions were observed in Fusobacterium nucleatum and Capnocytophaga spp., accompanied by improvements in clinical markers, including probing depth, bleeding on probing, and plaque index. The AI framework successfully identified visual inflammation changes and supported early detection of non-responsiveness. Conclusions: SmartGel OV demonstrates promise as a natural adjunctive treatment for periodontitis and AI monitoring was included as an exploratory secondary tool to assess feasibility for future remote tracking. White-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) are a cervid species native to the Americas with ecological, social, and economic significance. Managers must consider several factors when working to maintain the health and sustainability of these wild herds, including reproduction, particularly pregnancy and recruitment rates. White-tailed deer have a variable reproductive capacity, with age, health, and habitat influencing this variability. However, it is unknown whether chronic wasting disease (CWD) impacts reproduction and, more specifically, if CWD infection alters a female deer’s probability of pregnancy. Our study addressed this question using data from 9783 female deer culled in northern Illinois between 2003 and 2023 as part of the Illinois Department of Natural Resources’ ongoing CWD management program. Multilevel Bayesian logistic regression was employed to quantify the relationship between pregnancy probability and covariates like maternal age, deer population density, and date of culling. Maternal infection with CWD was found to have no significant effect on pregnancy probability, raising concerns that the equal ability of infected and non-infected females to reproduce could make breeding, which inherently involves close physical contact, an important source of disease transmission between males and females and females and their fawns. The results also identified that female fawns (<1 year old) are sensitive to county-level deer land cover utility (LCU) and deer population density, and that there was no significant difference in how yearlings (1–2 years old) and adult (2+ years old) responded to these variables. Zoological environments aim to promote natural behaviours and optimal welfare conditions. Over the past decade, research on the use of artificial ultraviolet-B (UV-B) exposure has improved vitamin D3 levels and reduced incidences of metabolic bone disease in diurnal primates; however, this has not been investigated in nocturnals. Aye-ayes (Daubentonia madagascariensis), nocturnal lemurs often housed indoors in zoos with little to no exposure to natural sunlight, have been reported to have low vitamin D3 levels. This study aims to investigate the impacts of artificial UV-B as a supplemental healthcare strategy for aye-ayes, examining its influences on vitamin D3 levels and positional sleeping behaviour. The 25-hydroxy-vitamin D3 (25OHD3) blood levels were tested before and after exposure to different levels of artificial UV-B and heat sources. Statistical analysis showed no correlation between UV-B and 25OHD3 at group parameter levels. However, one individual showed a positive correlation. Sleeping position duration analysis showed a potential basking behaviour with the use of increased ear exposure and other thermoregulatory responses. Despite representing 8.06% of the European captive aye-aye population, these findings highlight the need for further research on vitamin D3 parameters and responses to UV-B to optimise captive conditions and support the species’ long-term health. Characterization of Natural Products as Inhibitors of Shikimate Dehydrogenase from Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus aureus: Kinetic and Molecular Dynamics Simulations, and Biological Activity Studies

Antibiotic resistance is considered to be one of the most complex health obstacles of our time. Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) represents a global health challenge due to its broad treatment resistance capacity, resulting in high mortality rates. The shikimate pathway (SP) is responsible for the biosynthesis of chorismate from glycolysis and pentose phosphate pathway intermediates. This pathway plays a crucial role in producing aromatic amino acids, folates, ubiquinone, and other secondary metabolites in bacteria. Notably, SP is absent in humans, which makes it a specific and potential therapeutic target to explore for discovering new antibiotics against MRSA. The present study characterized in vitro and in silico natural products as inhibitors of the shikimate dehydrogenase from methicillin-resistant S. aureus (SaSDH). The results showed that, from the set of compounds studied, phloridzin, rutin, and caffeic acid were the most potent inhibitors of SaSDH, with IC50 values of 140, 160, and 240 µM, respectively. Furthermore, phloridzin showed a mixed-type inhibition mechanism, whilst rutin and caffeic acid showed non-competitive mechanisms. The structural characterization of the SaSDH–inhibitor complex indicated that these compounds interacted with amino acids from the catalytic site and formed stable complexes. In biological activity studies against MRSA, caffeic acid showed an MIC of 2.2 mg/mL. Taken together, these data encourage using these compounds as a starting point for developing new antibiotics based on natural products against MRSA. Full article

Quercetin, a natural polyphenolic flavonoid with antioxidant and anti-allergic properties, is extensively found in foods and holds significant importance for human health. In this study, a simple switch-off fluorescent sensor based on copper nanoclusters (Cu NCs) was proposed for the sensitive determination of quercetin. Glutathione acted as the reducing and protective agent in the synthesized process of Cu NCs via a facile, green one-pot method. As anticipated, the glutathione-capped Cu NCs (GSH-Cu NCs) exhibited favorable water solubility and ultrasmall size. The fluorescence property of GSH-Cu NCs was further enhanced with Al3+ ion through the aggregation-induced emission effect. When quercetin was present in the sample solution, the system exhibited effective fluorescence quenching, which was attributed to the internal filter effect. The GSH-Cu NCs/Al3+-based fluorescent sensor showed a good linear relationship to quercetin in the concentration range from 0.1 to 60 μM. A detection limit of 24 nM was obtained. Avocado (Persea americana), originally from Mesoamerica, has emerged as a focus of intense scientific and industrial interest due to its unique combination of nutritional richness, bioactive potential, and technological versatility. Its pulp, widely consumed across the globe, is notably abundant in monounsaturated fatty acids, especially oleic acid, which can comprise over two-thirds of its lipid content. In addition, it provides significant levels of dietary fiber, fat-soluble vitamins such as A, D, E and K, carotenoids, tocopherols, and phytosterols like β-sitosterol. These constituents are consistently associated with antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, glycemic regulatory, and cardioprotective effects, supported by a growing body of experimental and clinical evidence. This review offers a comprehensive and critical synthesis of the chemical composition and functional properties of avocado, with particular emphasis on its lipid profile, phenolic compounds, and phytosterols. It also explores recent advances in environmentally sustainable extraction techniques, including ultrasound-assisted and microwave-assisted processes, as well as the application of natural deep eutectic solvents. These technologies have demonstrated improved efficiency in recovering bioactives while aligning with the principles of green chemistry. The use of avocado-derived ingredients in nanostructured delivery systems and their incorporation into functional foods, cosmetics, and health-promoting formulations is discussed in detail. Additionally, the potential of native cultivars and the application of precision nutrition strategies are identified as promising avenues for future innovation. Taken together, the findings underscore the avocado’s relevance as a high-value matrix for sustainable development. Future research should focus on optimizing extraction protocols, clarifying pharmacokinetic behavior, and ensuring long-term safety in diverse applications. Full article

Immunoglobulin light chains are essential components of intact immunoglobulins, traditionally believed to be produced exclusively by B cells. Physiologically, excess light chains not assembled into intact antibodies exist as free light chains (FLCs). Increasingly recognized as important biomarkers for diseases such as multiple myeloma, systemic amyloidosis, and light chain-related renal injuries, FLCs have also been shown in recent decades to originate from non-B cell sources, including epithelial and carcinoma cells. This review primarily focuses on novel non-B cell-derived FLCs, which challenge the conventional paradigms. It systematically compares B cell-derived and non-B cell-derived FLCs, analyzing differences in genetic features, physicochemical properties, and functional roles in both health and disease. By elucidating the distinctions and similarities in their nature as immune regulators and disease mediators, we highlight the significant clinical potential of FLCs, particularly non-B cell-derived FLCs, for novel diagnostic and therapeutic strategies. The Role of Asprosin in Females in the Context of Fertility—An Exploratory Study

Background: Asprosin is a relatively recently discovered glucogenic adipokine secreted during fasting that plays an important role in various biochemical processes in the body, including those connected with obesity and insulin resistance. The aim of this exploratory study was to investigate the associations between selected hormonal, anthropometric, and lifestyle-related parameters and serum asprosin concentration. As studies concerning fertility and asprosin have so far been limited to men or women with PCOS, its role in the general female population remains largely unexplored. The direction of this exploration was thus pointed toward possible connections with female fertility. Methods: The case-control study group included 56 women of reproductive age (25–42 years), who were patients of the Reproductive Health Clinic and the Clinic of Endocrinology, Diabetology, and Internal Medicine of the Medical University of Białystok, Poland. The levels of selected hormones, including anti-Müllerian hormone (AMH), estradiol, sex hormone-binding globulin (SHBG), and testosterone, body composition parameters, and a lifestyle parameter—night fasting duration—were assessed to test their associations with serum asprosin concentration. Results: A weak negative correlation was found between AMH level and serum asprosin concentration, suggesting a potential link between asprosin and ovarian reserve. Furthermore, a moderate positive correlation was found between the percentage of total body water (TBW) and serum asprosin concentration. No significant associations were observed between the levels of the other tested hormones and serum asprosin concentration, or between body composition parameters or night fasting duration and serum asprosin concentration. The multivariate model designed in the study shows that AMH, TBW, and night fasting duration explain 23.4% of asprosin variability. Conclusions: Although the nature of the study is exploratory, the findings indicate that the role of asprosin in the female population—particularly its role in fertility—requires further research. Not only is the number of available studies on asprosin insufficient, but the results of this study partly contradict what is known about the hormone from previous studies, which were largely performed with male cohorts. In addition, the results of this study suggest that asprosin may indeed be involved in mechanisms related to female fertility, particularly those connected with ovarian reserve. Nevertheless, studies performed in larger, more homogeneous populations are necessary to confirm the role of asprosin in women, including its association with female fertility. Full article
