Improving the efficiency of spark-ignited (SI) engines while simultaneously reducing emissions remains a critical challenge in meeting global energy demands and increasingly stringent environmental regulations. Lean burn combustion is a proven strategy for increasing efficiency in SI engines. However, the air dilution level is limited by the mixture’s ignition ability and poor combustion efficiency and stability. A promising method to extend the dilution limit and ensure stable combustion is the implementation of an active pre-chamber combustion system. The pre-chamber spark-ignited (PCSI) engine facilitates stable and rapid combustion of very lean mixtures in the main chamber by utilizing high ignition energy from multiple flame jets penetrating from the pre-chamber (PC) to the main chamber (MC). Together with the increase in efficiency by dilution of the mixture, nitrogen oxide (NOX) emissions are lowered. However, at peak efficiencies, the NOX emissions are still too high and require aftertreatment. The use of exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) as a dilutant might enable simple aftertreatment by using a three-way catalyst. This study experimentally investigates the use of EGR as a dilution method in a PCSI engine fueled by methane and analyzes the benefits and drawbacks compared to the use of air as a dilution method. The experimental results are categorized into three sets: measurements at wide open throttle (WOT) conditions, at a constant engine load of indicated mean effective pressure (IMEP) of 5 bar, and at IMEP = 7 bar, all at a fixed engine speed of 1600 rpm. The experimental results were further enhanced with numerical 1D/0D simulations to obtain parameters such as the residual combustion products and excess air ratio in the pre-chamber, which could not be directly measured during the experimental testing. The findings indicate that air dilution achieves higher indicated efficiency than EGR, at all operating conditions. However, EGR shows an increasing trend in indicated efficiency with the increase in EGR rates but is limited due to misfires. In both dilution approaches, at peak efficiencies, aftertreatment is required for exhaust gases because they are above the legal limit, but a significant decrease in NOX emissions can be observed. Wetting behavior of molten metals on solid substrates is a critical phenomenon influencing numerous industrial applications, including welding, anti-corrosion coatings, and metal additive manufacturing (AM). In particular, molten metal jetting (MMJ), an emerging AM technology, requires that the molten metal remain pinned at the nozzle exit. Thus, each new metal requires a specific nozzle material to ensure consistent droplet ejection and deposition, making it important to rapidly identify the appropriate wetting combinations. However, traditional measurements of wetting angles require expensive equipment and only allow one combination of materials to be investigated at a time which can be time consuming. This work introduces a rapid screening method based on sessile droplet experiments to evaluate wetting profiles across multiple metal–substrate combinations simultaneously. This study investigates the wetting interactions of molten Al alloy (Al4008), Cu, and Sn on various ceramic and metal substrates to identify optimal material combinations for MMJ nozzle designs. Results demonstrate that Al4008 achieves wetting on ceramic substrates such as AlN, TiO2, and SiC, with varying mechanisms including chemical reactions and weak surface interactions. Additionally, theoretical predictions regarding miscibility gaps and melting point differences were verified for Cu and Sn on refractory metals like Mo and W. Findings from this study contribute to the establishment of a materials compatibility library, enabling the selection of wetting/non-wetting combinations for stable MMJ operation. This resource not only advances MMJ technologies but also provides valuable insights for broader applications such as welding, coating, and printed electronics. Full article

The increasing carbon footprint of civil aviation has made the use of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) a strategic necessity in line with the sector’s sustainability goals. This study evaluates the existing SAF types based on environmental, economic, technical and social criteria, determines the criteria weights with Fuzzy-Step-Wise Weight Assessment Ratio Analysis (F-SWARA) and selects the most suitable alternative through Spherical Fuzzy-Multi Objective Optimization on the basis of Ratio Analysis plus full MULTIplicative form (SF-MULTIMOORA) method. The alternative evaluation process was carried out on a Python-based online platform and sensitivity analysis was performed on five different scenarios. According to the findings, the Hydroprocessed Esters and Fatty Acids (HEFA-SPK) alternative stands out as the most suitable option in all scenarios, followed by the Fischer-Tropsch Synthetic Paraffinic Kerosene (FT-SPK) alternative. In contrast, Alcohol-to-Jet (ATJ-SPK) and Power-to-Liquid (PtL) options seem to be more variable and less stable. The study provides methodological contributions for the evaluation of SAF alternatives with fuzzy multi-criteria decision making (MCDM) methods and provides strategic implications for manufacturers and airlines in achieving the low-carbon targets of the aviation sector. This study investigated the aerodynamic structures generated by transverse jet injection in supersonic flows around high-speed vehicles. The unsteady evolution of these structures was analyzed using an improved delayed detached Eddy simulation (IDDES) approach based on the Reynolds stress model (RSM). The simulations successfully reproduced experimentally observed shock systems and vortical structures. The time-averaged flow characteristics were compared with the experimental results, and good agreement was observed. The flow characteristics were analyzed, with particular emphasis on the formation of counter-rotating vortex pairs in the downstream region, as well as complex near-field phenomena, such as flow separation and shock wave/boundary layer interactions. Time-resolved spectral analysis at multiple monitoring locations revealed the presence of a global oscillation within the flow dynamics. Within these regions, pressure fluctuations in the recirculation zone lead to periodic oscillations of the upstream bow shock. This dynamic interaction modulates the instability of the windward shear layer and generates large-scale vortex structures. As these shed vortices convect downstream, they interact with the barrel shock, triggering significant oscillatory motion. To further characterize this behavior, dynamic mode decomposition (DMD) was applied to the pressure fluctuations. The analysis confirmed the presence of a coherent global oscillation mode, which was found to simultaneously govern the periodic motions of both the upstream bow shock and the barrel shock. Jet fuels are a complex mixture of hydrocarbons and performance additives, including some compounds with established human toxicity. They represent a significant occupational hazard for military personnel; however, little is known about possible long-term health effects, particularly following cessation of exposure. In response to United States (US) Veterans’ concerns, the US Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) and the Department of Defense (DoD) launched a large retrospective cohort study to assess the impact of military occupational jet fuel exposure on Veterans’ health. The Long-Term Impact of Fuel Exposure (LIFE) cohort consists of over 1.3 million Veterans who entered service on or after 1 January 1995, including both individuals with jet fuel-exposed occupations in their service history and a random sample of unexposed Veterans. Data from multiple VA and DoD administrative datasets were linked to evaluate morbidity, disability, and mortality endpoints. Analyses are underway to assess associations between jet fuel exposure and adverse health outcomes in multiple body systems. This study represents the largest effort to date to investigate these effects, with the intention of informing policies affecting Veterans for years to come. Full article

Tungsten powder/polytetrafluoroethylene (W/PTFE) composites have the potential to replace traditional metallic materials as casings for controllable power warheads. Under explosive loading, they generate high-density and relatively uniformly distributed metal powder particles, thereby enhancing close-range impact effects while reducing collateral damage. To characterize the material’s response under impact loading, plate impact tests were conducted to investigate the effects of tungsten content (70 wt%, 80 wt%, and 90 wt%) and tungsten particle size (200 μm, 400 μm, and 600 μm) on the impact behavior of the composites. The free surface velocity histories of the target plates were measured using a 37 mm single-stage light gas gun and a full-fiber laser interferometer (DISAR), enabling the determination of the shock velocity–particle velocity relationship to establish the equation of state. Experimental data show a linear relationship between shock velocity and particle velocity, with the 80 wt% and 90 wt% composites exhibiting similar shock velocities. The fitted slope increases from 2.792 to 2.957 as the tungsten mass fraction rises from 70 wt% to 90 wt%. With particle size increasing from 200 μm to 600 μm, the slope decreases from 3.204 to 2.756, while c0 increases from 224.7 to 633.3. Comparison of the Hugoniot pressure curves of different specimens indicated that tungsten content significantly affects the impact behavior, whereas variations in tungsten particle size have a negligible influence on the Hugoniot pressure. A high tungsten content with small particle size (e.g., 90 wt% with ~200 μm) improves the overall compressive properties of composite materials. Based on the experimental results, a mesoscale finite element model consistent with the tests was developed. The overall error between the numerical simulations and experimental results was less than 5% under various conditions, thereby validating the accuracy of the model. Numerical simulations revealed the coupling mechanism between tungsten particle plastic deformation and matrix flow. The strong rarefaction unloading effect initiated at the composite’s free surface caused matrix spallation and jetting. Multiple wave systems were generated at the composite–copper interface, whose interference and coupling ultimately resulted in a nearly uniform macroscopic pressure field. Full article

Combustion of aviation jet fuel emits a complex mixture of pollutants linked to adverse health outcomes among airport personnel and nearby communities. While epidemiological studies showed the detrimental effects of aviation-derived air pollutants on human health, the molecular mechanisms of the interactions of these pollutants with cellular biomolecules like proteins that drive the adverse health effects remain poorly understood. In this study, we performed molecular docking simulations of 272 pollutant–protein complexes using AutoDock Vina 1.2.7 to characterize the binding strength of the pollutants with the selected proteins. We selected 34 aviation-derived pollutants that constitute three chemical categories of pollutants: volatile organic compounds (VOCs), polyaromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), and organophosphate esters (OPEs). Each pollutant was docked to eight proteins that play critical roles in endocrine, metabolic, transport, and neurophysiological functions, where functional disruption is implicated in disease. The effect of binding of multiple pollutants was analyzed. Our results indicate that aliphatic and monoaromatic VOCs display low (<6 kcal/mol) binding affinities while PAHs and organophosphate esters exhibit strong (>7 kcal/mol) binding affinities. Furthermore, the binding strength of PAHs exhibits a positive correlation with the increasing number of aromatic rings in the pollutants, ranging from nearly 7 kcal/mol for two aromatic rings to more than 15 kcal/mol for five aromatic rings. Analysis of intermolecular interactions showed that these interactions are predominantly stabilized by hydrophobic, pi-stacking, and hydrogen bonding interactions. Simultaneous docking of multiple pollutants revealed the increased binding strength of the resulting complexes, highlighting the detrimental effect of exposure to pollutant mixtures found in ambient air near airports. We provide a priority list of pollutants that regulatory authorities can use to further develop targeted mitigation strategies to protect the vulnerable personnel and communities near airports. Background: Airway management in otolaryngology presents unique challenges due to shared airway access, altered anatomy, and specific procedural requirements. This article examines current techniques and oxygenation strategies across various ENT procedures to provide a guide for otolaryngologists. Methods: A narrative review was performed of the contemporary literature, focusing on airway techniques in ENT surgery, including laryngeal surgery, pediatric bronchoscopy, transoral surgery, and trauma and emergency scenarios. A systematic search for difficult airway guidelines was performed using the EMBASE, Pubmed, and Cochrane databases to examine where guidelines are published. Results: The key areas for specialist airway management included laryngeal surgery in the tubeless field and adjuncts for emergency situations. High-flow nasal oxygen (HFNO), jet ventilation, video laryngoscopy, and specialized tubes emerged as key technological advances, improving safety and outcomes. A systematic search identified 947 difficult airway articles across 82 publishers. These were predominantly in anesthetic journals (n = 301), with limited representation in the otolaryngology literature (n = 8) and limited guidance concerning awake surgical tracheostomies under local anesthetic. Awake tracheal intubation and emergency front-of-neck access were identified as key techniques across multiple publications. Conclusions: Modern ENT airway management requires multidisciplinary planning, advanced equipment familiarity, and procedure-specific techniques. Despite having the expertise to perform the gold standard, the limited otolaryngology literature on difficult airways suggests that guidelines are primarily developed by the anesthetic community. Silicon carbide (SiC) materials have demonstrated promising application prospects in modern manufacturing due to their outstanding physical and chemical properties. With its process flexibility and formation feasibility, binder jetting 3D printing technology has become a crucial technical approach to meet the demand for mass production of complex, high-performance SiC components. Addressing the technical challenges of traditional manufacturing techniques in achieving high-quality, complex-shaped SiC components, this paper systematically reviews the application of binder jetting 3D printing technology in fabricating high-quality SiC-based ceramic components, with a particular focus on the regulation of key process parameters affecting SiC green body formation quality and the optimization of post-densification processes. Firstly, this paper elaborates on the powder pretreatment, green part formation process, and post-processing chain involved in this technology, establishes an evaluation index system for formation quality, and provides research directions for rapid prototyping of SiC powders. Secondly, it provides an in-depth analysis of the influence patterns of jetting parameters (e.g., jetting conditions, powder characteristics, binder properties) and various post-processing techniques on the quality of SiC-based components, along with optimization methods to enhance the dimensional accuracy and mechanical properties of 3D-printed SiC components. Furthermore, this paper systematically summarizes advanced characterization methods for evaluating formation quality and demonstrates the technology’s application potential across multiple industrial fields through representative engineering cases. Finally, it predicts the future development trends of this technology and discusses potential application expansion directions and key scientific issues in current research, aiming to provide theoretical references for promoting in-depth development of this technology. Estimating Remaining Useful Life (RUL) is crucial in modern Prognostic and Health Management (PHM) systems providing valuable information for planning the maintenance strategy of critical components in complex systems such as aircraft engines. Deep Learning (DL) models have shown great performance in the accurate prediction of RUL, building hierarchical representations by the stacking of multiple explicit neural layers. In the current research paper, we follow a different approach presenting a Deep Equilibrium Model (DEM) that effectively captures the spatial and temporal information of the sequential sensor. The DEM, which incorporates convolutional layers and a novel dual-input interconnection mechanism to capture sensor information effectively, estimates the degradation representation implicitly as the equilibrium solution of an equation, rather than explicitly computing it through multiple layer passes. The convergence representation of the DEM is estimated by a fixed-point equation solver while the computation of the gradients in the backward pass is made using the Implicit Function Theorem (IFT). The Monte Carlo Dropout (MCD) technique under calibration is the final key component of the framework that enhances regularization and performance providing a confidence interval for each prediction, contributing to a more robust and reliable outcome. Simulation experiments on the widely used NASA Turbofan Jet Engine Data Set show consistent improvements, with the proposed framework offering a competitive alternative for RUL prediction under diverse conditions. Battery thermal runaway (TR) is usually accompanied by a large amount of heat release, as well as a jet of flame. This not only causes harm to the surrounding environment but even exacerbates thermal runaway propagation (TRP). At this stage, many types of materials are used to suppress TRP, and people tend to focus on improving one characteristic of the material while ignoring other properties of the material. This may leave potential pitfalls for TRP suppression, suggesting the need to study multiple properties of multiple materials. In order to better weigh the advantages and disadvantages of different types of materials when suppressing TRP, we compared three typical materials for suppressing TRP behavior in lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). These materials are phase change materials (PCM), ceramic fibers, and glass fibers. They are all available in two different thicknesses, 2 mm and 3 mm. The experiments started with a comparative analysis of the TR experimental phenomena in the presence of the different materials. Then, the temperature and mass loss of the battery module during TR were analyzed separately and comparatively. The 3 mm glass fiber showed the best inhibition effect, which extended the TR interval between cells 1 and 2 to 894 s and successfully inhibited the TR of cell 3. Compared with the blank group, the total mass loss decreased from 194.3 g to 182.2 g, which is a 6.2% reduction. Subsequently, we comprehensively analyzed the performance of the three materials in suppressing TRP by combining their suppressing mechanisms. The experimental results show that glass fiber has the best effect in suppressing TRP due to its excellent thermal insulation and mechanical properties. This study may provide new insights into how to trade-off material properties for TRP suppression in the future. Full article

Numerical models were employed to simulate the effects of urban infrastructure on the city-scale precipitation distribution during multiple closely occurring convective squall line events over Chicago. Two high-resolution simulations were inter-compared, one using standard land use databases to initialize the WRF-ARW numerical model and the other using a high-resolution urban canopy formulation and detailed land use databases to initialize the WRF-UCM numerical model. Two squall lines organized and propagated over Chicago during an eight-hour period. The (1 km) spatio-temporal evolution of the first squall line was more accurately simulated by the WRF-UCM than that simulated by the WRF-ARW. The WRF-UCM captures more realistic urban heat island-induced buoyancy forcing when validated against multiple airport meteograms and Doppler radar-derived reflectivity and precipitation. The WRF-UCM increases surface heating, substantially strengthening the surface-based convective available potential energy (SBCAPE) and subsequent cold downdrafts. Additionally, the increased surface heating acts to strengthen and bifurcate the upper-level divergence and energize three low-level jets that converge upon the city and shape the convective organization. While the effect of this additional buoyancy on the first squall line was critical, the second line’s dissipation was not substantially different in the two simulations because of diminishing tropospheric forcing. OT 355 (4FGL J1734.3 + 3858) is a relatively rarely studied but highly variable, moderate-redshift (z = 0.975) flat-spectrum radio quasar (blazar). With this work, we aim to study its optical variability on different timescales, which can help us to better understand the physical processes in relativistic jets operating in blazar-type active galactic nuclei. OT 355 was observed in four colors (BVRI) during 41 nights between 2017 and 2023 using three 1 and 2 m class telescopes. The object was also monitored on intra-night timescales, for about 100 h in total. In addition, secondary standard stars in the field of OT 355 were calibrated in order to facilitate future photometric studies. We detected significant intra-night and night-to-night variations of up to 0.5 mag. Variability characteristics, color changes, and a possible “rms-flux” relation were studied and discussed. Using simple arguments, we show that a negative “rms-flux” relation should be expected if many independent processes/regions drive the short-term variability via Doppler factor changes, which is not observed in this and other cases. This finding raises arguments for the idea that more complex multiplicative processes are responsible for blazar variability. Studying blazar variability, especially on the shortest possible timescales, can help to estimate the strength and geometry of their magnetic fields, the linear sizes of the emitting regions, and other aspects, which may be of importance for constraining and modeling blazars’ emitting mechanisms. In Vitro and In Silico Analysis of Entrainment Characterization in Injection Jet-Assisted Fontan Circulation

Fontan circulation is a fragile system in which imperfections at any of multiple levels may compromise the quality of life, produce secondary pathophysiology, and shorten life span. Increased inferior vena caval pressure itself may play a role in “Fontan failure”. This study describes a mock flow loop model (MFL) designed to quantitatively estimate pulmonary flow entrainment induced by continuous and pulsed flow injections. A patient generic 3D-printed phantom model of the total cavopulmonary connection (TCPC) with average dimensions matching those of a 2–4-year-old patient was inserted in an MFL derived from a reduced lumped parameter model (LPM) representing cardiovascular circulation. The LPM comprises four 2-element Windkessel compartments (compliance and resistance), approximating the upper and lower systemic circulations and the right and left pulmonary circulations. The prescribed cardiac output is about 2.3 L/min for a body surface area of 0.675 m2. The injections originate from an external pump through a 7–9 fr catheter, following a strict protocol suggested by the clinical team, featuring a variation in injection rate (flow rate), injection volume, and injection modality (continuous or pulsed). The key measurements in this study are the flow rates sampled at the distal pulmonary arteries, as well as at the upper and lower body boundaries. These measurements were then used to calculate effective entrainment as the difference between the measured and expected flow rates, as well as jet relaxation (rise and fall time of injection). The results show that for continuous or pulsed injections, varying the total volume injected has no significant influence on the entrainment rate across all injection rates. On the other hand, for both injection modalities, increasing the injection rate results in a reduction in entrainment that is consistent across all injected volumes. This study demonstrates the effectiveness of a high-speed injection jet entraining a slow co-flow while determining the potential for fluid buildup, which could ultimately cause an increase in caval pressure. To avoid the increase in caval pressure due to mass accumulation, we added a fenestration to our proposed injection jet shunt-assisted Fontan models. It was found that for a set of well-defined parameters, the jet not only can be beneficial to the local flow, but any adverse effect can be obviated by careful tuning. These results were also cross-validated with similar in silico findings. Full article

Characteristic Analysis of the Extreme Precipitation over South China During the Dragon-Boat Precipitation in 2022

Using multi-source precipitation datasets including NASA GPM (IMERG), GPCP, ECMWF ERA5, and station precipitation data from the China Meteorological Administration (CMA), along with ERA5 reanalysis fields for atmospheric circulation analysis, this study investigates the extreme precipitation events during the “Dragon-Boat Precipitation” period from 20 May to 21 June over South China in 2022 using the synoptic diagnostic method. The results indicate that the total precipitation during this period significantly exceeded the climatological average, with multiple large-scale extreme rainfall events characterized by high intensity, extensive coverage, and prolonged duration. The spatial distribution of precipitation exhibited a north-more-south-less pattern, with the maximum rainfall center located in the Nanling Mountains, particularly in the Shaoguan–Qingyuan–Heyuan region of Guangdong Province, where peak precipitation exceeded 1100 mm, and the mean precipitation was approximately 1.7 times the climatology from the GPM data. The average daily precipitation throughout the period was 17.5 mm/day, which was 6 mm/day higher than the climatological mean, while the heaviest rainfall on 13 June reached 39 mm/day above the average, exceeding two standard deviations. The extreme precipitation during the “Dragon-Boat Precipitation” period in 2022 was associated with an anomalous deep East Asian trough, an intensified South Asian High, a stronger-than-usual Western Pacific Subtropical High, an enhanced South Asian monsoon and South China Sea monsoon, and the dominance of a strong Southwesterly Low-Level Jet (SLLJ) over South China. Two major moisture transport pathways were established: one from the Bay of Bengal to South China and another from the South China Sea, with the latter contributing a little higher amount of water vapor transport than the former. The widespread extreme precipitation on 13 June 2022 was triggered by the anomalous atmospheric circulation conditions. In the upper levels, South China was located at the northwestern periphery of the slightly stronger-than-normal Western Pacific Subtropical High, intersecting with the base of a deep trough associated with an anomalous intense Northeast China Cold Vortex (NCCV). At lower levels, the region was positioned along a shear line formed by anomalous southwesterly and northerly winds, where exceptionally strong southwesterly moisture transport, significant moisture convergence, and intense vertical updraft led to the widespread extreme rainfall event on that day.
