Maliciously deployed disco intelligent reflecting surfaces (DIRSs) introduce active channel aging (ACA) to achieve fully passive jamming without requiring channel state information or jamming power. To enhance this capability, we propose a distributed DIRS framework for downlink multi-user multiple-input single-output (MU-MISO) systems. By distributing multiple panels, this framework increases independent reflection paths and introduces inter-panel cascaded reflections, severely exacerbating precoder mismatch. We develop a comprehensive near- and far-field cascaded channel model, deriving closed-form expressions for the interference variance and a sum-rate lower bound in the large-antenna regime. Both pilot training (PT) phase-on and phase-off scenarios are investigated to evaluate the jamming impact under different operational states. Analytical and simulation results reveal that DIRS-induced interference scales with transmit power, imposing a strict rate ceiling. Specifically, at 10 dBm transmit power per LU, the proposed framework not only reduces the achievable sum-rate by over 57% relative to the interference-free scenario, but also improves the jamming impact by approximately 36% compared to the conventional single-panel DIRS, demonstrating superior and robust fully passive jamming capability. This paper investigates the secrecy energy efficiency (SEE) maximization problem in a downlink multiple-input single-output (MISO) wireless communication system assisted by an intelligent reflecting surface with movable elements (ME-IRS). Unlike a conventional IRS, which has fixed-position elements, the proposed ME-IRS enables dynamic adjustment of element positions to exploit additional spatial degrees of freedom for performance enhancement. However, such flexibility introduces new challenges due to the strong coupling among transmit beamforming, IRS phase shifts, and element positions, as well as the additional power consumption caused by element movement. To address these issues, we formulate an SEE maximization problem by jointly optimizing the transmit beamforming, phase shift matrix, and element positions. The resulting problem is highly non-convex owing to the fractional objective function and coupled variables. To address this challenge, an efficient alternating optimization (AO) framework is developed by leveraging semidefinite relaxation (SDR), successive convex approximation (SCA), and gradient-based methods. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed ME-IRS configuration significantly outperforms conventional fixed-position and discrete-position IRS configurations in terms of SEE, providing valuable insights into the impact of movable region size and system parameters. Reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs) hold promising technical prospects for 6G wireless communications to enhance system capacity, coverage and sum-rate. Unlike existing studies deploying only passive or active RISs, this paper adopts a novel hybrid RIS architecture that optimally allocates the number of active and passive elements. Under fixed quantities of both RIS element types in the fixed hybrid RIS, it simultaneously increases the number of base station antennas and served users, focusing on solving rate optimization for hybrid RIS-assisted MISO systems deployed in various scenarios. This paper establishes a fundamental model for hybrid RIS reflection signals. To better characterize the performance of the proposed hybrid RIS architecture, an optimization problem is formulated to maximize the sum-rate of the hybrid RIS-assisted multi-user, multiple-input, single-output (MU-MISO) system. An efficient algorithm is proposed combining fractional programming (FP), alternating optimization, and Lagrange duality transformation. Simulation results demonstrate that with hybrid RIS assistance, the system’s sum-rate gain increases by 49.1% and 40%, respectively, compared to systems with only active RIS deployment. This achieves higher sum-rate gains at lower power consumption. Full article

This research provides valuable insights into the application of mathematical modeling to real-world scenarios, as exemplified by the COVID-19 pandemic. After data collection, the preparation stage included exploratory analysis, standardization and normalization, computation, and validation. A mathematical model initially developed for COVID-19 dynamics in Romania was subsequently applied to data from Italy and Switzerland during the same time interval. The model is structured as a multiple-input single-output (MISO) system, where the inputs underwent a neural network-based training stage to address inconsistencies in the acquired data. In parallel, an ARMAX model was employed to capture the stochastic nature of the epidemic process. Results demonstrate that the Romanian-based model generalized effectively across the three countries, achieving a strong predictive accuracy (forecast accuracy > 98.59%). Importantly, the model maintained robust performance despite significant cross-country differences in testing strategies, policy measures, timing of initial cases, and imported infections. This work contributes a novel perspective by showing that a unified data-driven modeling framework can be transferable across heterogeneous contexts. More broadly, it underscores the potential of integrating mathematical modeling with predictive analytics to support evidence-based decision-making and strengthen preparedness for future global health crises. Poultry waste composting is a necessary technique for agricultural farm sustainability. Composting is a dynamic process influenced by multiple variables. Humidity and temperature play fundamental roles in analyzing its different phases according to the environment and composting technique. Current developments for monitoring these variables include automation via intelligent Internet of Things (IoT)-based sensor networks for variable tracking. These advancements serve as efficient tools for modeling that facilitate the simulation and prediction of composting process variables to improve system efficiency. Therefore, this paper presents the dynamic modeling of composting via forced aeration processes in high-mountain climates, with the intent of estimating biomass temperature dynamics in different phases using system identification techniques. To this end, four dynamic model estimation structures are employed: transfer function (TF), state space (SS), process (P), and Hammerstein–Wiener (HW). The and model quality, fitting results, and standard error metrics of the different models found in each phase are assessed through residual analysis from each structure by validation with real system data. Our results show that the second-order underdamped multiple-input–single-output (MISO) process model with added noise demonstrates the best fit and validation performance. Full article

Reconfigurable Intelligent Surface (RIS) has emerged as a promising enabling technology for wireless communications, which significantly enhances system performance through real-time manipulation of electromagnetic wave reflection characteristics. In RIS-assisted communication systems, existing deep learning-based channel state information (CSI) feedback methods often suffer from excessive parameter requirements and high computational complexity. To address this challenge, this paper proposes LwCSI-Net, a lightweight autoencoder network specifically designed for RIS-assisted multiple-input single-output (MISO) systems, aiming to achieve efficient and low-complexity CSI feedback. The core contribution of this work lies in an innovative lightweight feedback architecture that deeply integrates multi-layer convolutional neural networks (CNNs) with attention mechanisms. Specifically, the network employs 1D convolutional operations with unidirectional kernel sliding, which effectively reduces trainable parameters while maintaining robust feature-extraction capabilities. Furthermore, by incorporating an efficient channel attention (ECA) mechanism, the model dynamically allocates weights to different feature channels, thereby enhancing the capture of critical features. This approach not only improves network representational efficiency but also reduces redundant computations, leading to optimized computational complexity. Additionally, the proposed cross-channel residual block (CRBlock) establishes inter-channel information-exchange paths, strengthening feature fusion and ensuring outstanding stability and robustness under high compression ratio (CR) conditions. Our experimental results show that for CRs of 16, 32, and 64, LwCSI-Net significantly improves CSI reconstruction performance while maintaining fewer parameters and lower computational complexity, achieving an average complexity reduction of 35.63% compared to state-of-the-art (SOTA) CSI feedback autoencoder architectures. The performance of multiple-input single-output (MISO) transmission is highly dependent on the accuracy of the channel state information (CSI) at the base station (BS), which necessitates precise CSI estimation and reliable feedback from the user equipment. However, the overhead of the CSI feedback occupies substantial uplink bandwidth resources. To alleviate the overhead, this paper proposes a novel task-based quantizer for uplink MISO visible light communication (VLC) systems. In particular, a hybrid radio frequency (RF)/VLC system is considered, where VLC links are mainly used for large-volume downlink transmissions and RF links are used for uplink CSI feedback. Since the RF bandwidth resources are limited, the CSI is quantified to reduce the uplink resource requirements, which, however, inevitably causes CSI estimation errors at the BS. To guarantee the CSI estimation accuracy while minimizing the RF resource cost, a task-based quantization scheme for channel estimation (TQ-CE) is proposed. In the TQ-CE, both the quantized codebook and the post-processing matrix are optimized to minimize the mean square error (MSE) of the channel estimation. Taking the minimum MSE as the target task, the TQ-CE leverages vector quantization (VQ) to generate a codebook, which is designed to reduce the feedback overhead without compromising the precision of the channel estimation. Then, an optimal closed-form solution of the post-processing matrix is derived based on the minimum mean square error (MMSE) criterion. The simulation results demonstrate that the proposed TQ-CE achieved 0.25Mbit/s and 0.62Mbit/s higher data rates compared with the conventional scalar quantization-based channel estimation (SQ-CE) schemes and vector quantization-based channel estimation (VQ-CE) schemes, respectively. Moreover, in terms of the feedback overhead, compared with the 18-bit SQ-CE, the 4-bit TQ-CE achieved a 22.2% reduction in uplink bits. Full article

Visiblelightcommunication (VLC) is an emerging technology that offers an alternative to traditional wireless communications systems. However, the technology presents limitations related to the impact of the receiver’s orientation, which can significantly impact its performance. To address this issue, VLC systems use diversity schemes, such as transmitter and receiver diversity. In this paper, we derive an analytical expression for the probability of maintaining a line-of-sight (LoS) link in an underground mining visible light communication (UM-VLC) system with a receiver embedded in an object, such as a helmet, by considering user mobility. We show that the angle of incidence depends on the distance from the source and derive the probability accordingly for single-input single-output (SISO), multiple-input single-output (MISO), and single-input multiple-output cases (SIMO). Our results show that the analytical results fit with the simulated results. Furthermore, the resulting probabilities show that the angular position of the receiver significantly affects the channel’s quality, with the optimal position dependent on the field-of-view characteristics. These findings can provide an appropriate framework for receiver and transmitter diversity design through analytical expression. Full article

In this paper, we present a practical partitioned intelligent-reflecting-surface-aided transmit spatial modulation (PIRS-TSM) scheme, where spatial modulation is implemented at the transmitter and partitioning is conducted on the IRS to enhance the spectral efficiency (SE) and reliability for multiple-input single-output (MISO) systems. The theoretical analysis of average bit error rate (ABER) based on maximum likelihood (ML) detection and the computational complexity analysis are provided. Experimental simulations demonstrate that the PIRS-TSM scheme obtains a significant ABER enhancement under the same SE compared to the existing partitioned IRS-aided transmit space shift keying or generalized space shift keying schemes by additionally carrying modulated symbols. Moreover, the system performances with different configurations of antenna numbers and symbol modulation orders under the same SE are investigated as a practical application reference. Full article

For the non-homogeneous fractional-order Hammerstein multiple input single output (MISO) system, a method for identifying system coefficients and fractional-order parameters in stages is proposed. The coefficients of the system include the coefficients of nonlinear terms and the coefficients of the transfer function. In order to estimate them, we derived the coupling auxiliary form between the original system coefficients, developed a multi-innovation principle combined with the LM (Levenberg–Marquardt) parameter identification method, and introduced a decoupling strategy for the coupling coefficients. The entire identification process of fractional orders is split into three stages. The division of stages is based on assuming that the system is of different fractional order types, including global homogeneous fractional-order systems, local homogeneous fractional-order systems, and non-homogeneous fractional-order systems. Except for the first stage, the estimated initial value of the fractional order in each stage is derived from the estimated value of the fractional order in the previous stage. The fractional order iteration will re-drive the iteration of the system coefficients to achieve the purpose of alternate estimation. To validate the proposed algorithm, we modeled the fractional-order system of heat flow density through a two-layer wall system, demonstrating the algorithm’s effectiveness and practical applicability. An energy crisis, resulting from rapid population growth and advancements in the Internet of Things, has increased the importance of energy management strategies. Conventionally, energy management is conducted using sensors; however, additional energy is required to maintain sensor operation within these systems. Herein, an all-fiber-based triboelectric nanogenerator with O2 plasma treatment, graphene oxide/tannic acid solution coating, and hexane/1-octadecanethiol solution coating (AFT-OGH) is fabricated to implement a self-powered sensor, generating a high electrical power density, of 0.35 W/m2, with high stability. Using the AFT-OGH and inductors, self-powered wireless communication in real-time is implemented, achieving a communication distance of 180 cm. Based on these developments, a triboelectricity-driven multiple-input–single-output (T-MISO) system is demonstrated for the first time. An AFT-OGH-driven self-powered T-MISO occupancy detection system (AS-MODS) is implemented to determine the presence of a user in a specific space by developing a unique algorithm for automatically controlling LEDs using triboelectric signals. Considering these results, the proposed AS-MODS is expected to serve as a smart energy management system in the near future, owing to its great ability to control energy consumption. Full article

This paper investigates the design of active and passive beamforming in a reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS)-aided multi-user multiple-input single-output (MU-MISO) system with the objective of maximizing the sum rate. We propose a deep evolution policy (DEP)-based algorithm to derive the optimal beamforming strategy by generating multiple agents, each utilizing distinct deep neural networks (DNNs). Additionally, a random subspace selection (RSS) strategy is incorporated to effectively balance exploitation and exploration. The proposed DEP-based algorithm operates without the need for alternating iterations, gradient descent, or backpropagation, enabling simultaneous optimization of both active and passive beamforming. This paper aims to examine the physical layer security (PLS) performance of a reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS)-aided wiretap multiple-input single-output (MISO) system over generalized fading conditions by assuming inherent phase shift errors at the RIS. Specifically, the procedures (i.e., the method) to conduct this research is based on learning-based approaches to model the magnitude of the end-to-end RIS channel, i.e., employing an unsupervised expectation-maximization (EM) approach via a finite mixture of Nakagami-m distributions. This general framework allows us to accurately approximate key practical factors in RIS’s channel modeling, such as generalized fading conditions, spatial correlation, discrete phase shift, beamforming, and the presence of direct and indirect links. For the numerical results, the secrecy outage probability, the average secrecy rate, and the average secrecy loss under different setups of RIS-aided wireless systems are assessed by varying the fading parameters of the N-wave with a diffuse power fading channel model. The results show that the correlation between RIS elements and unfavorable channel conditions (e.g., Rayleigh) affect secrecy performance. Likewise, it was confirmed that the use of a RIS is not essential when there is a solid line-of-sight link between the transmitter and the legitimate receiver. Full article

This paper proposes a novel hybrid beamforming (HBF) structure for gain-aware grouping transmit antennas and users in multiuser multiple-input single-output (MU-MISO) systems. In the conventional HBF structure, all transmit antennas form a beam to each user. In this case, the gain of each antenna varies depending on the location of the base station and each user, and the transmit power after the digital beamformer is allocated to the antenna with the smallest gain. Signals transmitted from antennas with small gains are susceptible to noise and interference. Therefore, this paper proposes an HBF structure in which only the antenna with the highest gain forms the beam for each user. In the proposed scheme, the transmitting antennas are grouped and the beam is formed only by the group of antennas with the highest gain for each user. Simulation results show that the proposed scheme can reduce the number of phase shifters used on the transmit side compared to the conventional HBF scheme while maintaining sum-rate performance when the number of transmit antennas and users are the same. It was also shown that there is a trade-off between the reduction in the number of phase shifters used to form the beam and the improvement in performance as the number of transmit antennas increases. Furthermore, it is shown that when antenna selection is used, although there is a trade-off between the number of phase shifters and performance improvement, the number of phase shifters can be reduced while maintaining performance even when the number of transmit antennas increases. Intelligent Reflecting Surfaces (IRS) and Multiple-Input Single-Output (MISO) technologies are essential in the fifth generation (5G) networks and beyond. IRS optimizes the signal propagation and the coverage and is a viable approach to address the issues caused by fading channels that limits the spectral efficiency, while MIMO enhances data rates, reliability, and spectral efficiency by using multiple antennas at both transmitter and receiver ends. This paper proposes an IRS-assisted MISO system using the Orthogonal Space-Time Block Code (OSTBC) scheme to enhance the channel reliability and reduce the Bit Error Rate (BER) in wireless communication systems. The proposed system exploits the benefits from the transmit diversity gain of the OSTBC scheme as well as from the bit energy to noise power spectral density (Eb/No) improvement of the IRS technology. The presented work explores these combined technologies across different modulation schemes. The obtained results outperform the similar previously published works by considering higher-order modulation schemes as well as the deployment of rate ¾ OSTBC-assisted IRS. Moreover, the obtained results demonstrate that the integration of OSTBC with IRS can yield significant performance improvements in terms of Eb/No by 7 dB and 13 dB when using 16 reflecting elements and 64 reflecting elements, respectively.
