Validamycin Inhibits the Reproductive Capacity of Spodoptera frugiperda (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) by Suppressing the Activity of Trehalase

Spodoptera frugiperda (J. E. Smith, 1797), an omnivorous crop pest worldwide, reproduces prolifically. Validamycin, a competitive natural inhibitor of trehalase, is regarded as an effective and safe insecticide. Pupae were injected with a validamycin gradient (0.5–10 µg/µL) to block trehalase; enzyme activity and the Vitellogenin gene (Vg)/its receptor gene (VgR) expression (rpL10 reference) were subsequently quantified to determine the compound’s impact on S. frugiperda ontogeny and fecundity. Validamycin directly inhibited pupal membrane-bound trehalase, sharply lowering glycogen. Both pupal and adult mortality rose with dose, yielding marked abnormalities versus the Control Check (CK) group. At 0.5 μg/μL validamycin, eggs blackened and clumped in the lateral oviduct, blocking release; treated females produced far fewer eggs by day 4, exhibited ovarian atrophy, shorter lifespan, and low hatchability. The expression levels of Vg and VgR in the ovaries of the fall armyworm were consistent with the changes in the ovarian developmental phenotype. Validamycin significantly inhibited the activity of trehalase in S. frugiperda, severely hindering their normal eclosion and lowering the potential reproductive capacity of S. frugiperda. Simultaneously, it directly affects ovarian development and the lifespan of female moths. The results provide data to support the development of new methods for controlling S. frugiperda. Traditional Turkish marbling (Ebru) art is an intangible cultural heritage characterized by highly asymmetric, fluid, and non-reproducible patterns, making its long-term preservation and large-scale dissemination challenging. It is highly sensitive to environmental conditions, making it enormously difficult to mass produce while maintaining its original aesthetic qualities. A data-driven generative model is therefore required to create unlimited, high-fidelity digital surrogates that safeguard this UNESCO heritage against physical loss and enable large-scale cultural applications. This study introduces a deep generative modeling framework for the digital reconstruction of traditional Turkish marbling (Ebru) art using a Deep Convolutional Generative Adversarial Network (DCGAN). A dataset of 20,400 image patches, systematically derived from 17 original marbling works, was used to train the proposed model. The framework aims to mathematically capture the asymmetric, fluid, and stochastic nature of Ebru patterns, enabling the reproduction of their aesthetic structure in a digital medium. The generated images were evaluated using multiple quantitative and perceptual metrics, including Fréchet Inception Distance (FID), Kernel Inception Distance (KID), Learned Perceptual Image Patch Similarity (LPIPS), and PRDC-based indicators (Precision, Recall, Density, Coverage). For experimental validation, the proposed DCGAN framework is additionally compared against a Vanilla GAN baseline trained under identical conditions, highlighting the advantages of convolutional architectures for modeling marbling textures. The results show that the DCGAN model achieved a high level of realism and diversity without mode collapse or overfitting, producing images that were perceptually close to authentic marbling works. In addition to the quantitative evaluation, expert qualitative assessment by a traditional Ebru artist confirmed that the model reproduced the organic textures, color dynamics, and compositional asymmetrical characteristic of real marbling art. The proposed approach demonstrates the potential of deep generative models for the digital preservation, dissemination, and reinterpretation of intangible cultural heritage recognized by UNESCO. Microplastics (MPs) are considered to be dominant agents responsible for serious contamination in environmental and biological systems. Despite a huge increase in research on these contaminants, there are still considerable uncertainties and progress to be made on the exposure pathways of biological systems, modes of detection, and toxicity assessments. Therefore, developing a critical review of MPs is crucial due to growing evidence of their harmful effects on human health. In the current review, we aim to emphasize the potential toxic effects of MPs on different biological systems in humans, the mechanisms of their toxic effects, and gaps in our knowledge on risk assessment. Importantly, we focus on the risks posed by MPs for fetuses and child health. To ensure methodological rigor, the current review follows the PRISMA guidelines, explicitly detailing the literature search strategy and inclusion/exclusion criteria. The present review summarizes potential sources of MP generation, exposure pathways, quantitative analyses of dietary exposure, estimated daily intake, particle/leachate toxicity evidence, detection in different human organs, and potential toxic effects. MPs cause toxicity in several biological systems in humans, such as the gastrointestinal, nervous, hepatic, endocrine, respiratory, and reproductive systems. In addition, these particles are known to cause oxidative stress, alter metabolism, and affect gut microflora and gastrointestinal functions. Importantly, the current review also discusses the challenges encountered in conducting risk assessments for MPs and the approaches for counteracting these challenges. Finally, the review concludes by recommending future research directions in terms of counteracting the toxic effects of MPs on human health. Full article

Understanding the movement behaviour of male ruffs (Calidris pugnax) during the breeding season requires integrating recent telemetry data with long-standing theory on conditional reproductive strategies, lek dynamics, and behavioural polymorphism. A large-scale tracking study revealed extensive within-season movements among many males, with individuals visiting 1 to 23 sites, but also documented prolonged residency, with site tenures exceeding 40 days. Such variation is not contradictory but expected in a species whose reproductive system combines genetically fixed alternative strategies, governed by a supergene, with flexible conditional tactics expressed in response to ecological and social cues. Here, I synthesize movement ecology, state-dependent decision models, lekking theory, and previous empirical work to show that spatial behaviour in ruffs reflects a continuum of tactics rather than a homogeneous nomadic mode. Telemetry data thereby enrich our understanding of how individuals navigate fluctuating environments, competitive pressures, and mating opportunities. Embracing behavioural heterogeneity is essential for interpreting movement patterns and for understanding how reproductive diversity evolves and is maintained in lekking systems. Full article

The speckled smooth-hound Mustelus mento is an endemic coastal shark from the southeastern Pacific, currently listed as “Critically Endangered” due to intense fishing pressure and the absence of species-specific management across its distribution range. Between November 2021 and October 2023, 925 individuals were examined from artisanal landings in northern Chile to describe their reproductive biology and embryonic development characteristics. The total length ranged from 27.6–159.3 cm in females and 14.2–165.0 cm in males, with a sex ratio of 1:1.2, which was slightly biased towards females. The estimated size at 50% maturity was 53.6 cm for females and 48.7 cm for males, with 70.6% of females and 66.0% of males caught below these thresholds, indicating a predominance of immature individuals in landings. Nine gravid females (106–139 cm) contained 71 embryos, which were classified into five developmental stages (encapsulated ovum, early organogenesis, fin differentiation, pigmentation and growth, and pre-partum) based on their external morphology and yolk sac reduction. The litter size ranged from 4 to 12 embryos, and the estimated size at birth was 13–14 cm in length. Embryos were recorded only during the summer months, suggesting a seasonal reproductive cycle with parturition in the early autumn. The persistent yolk sac connection throughout development and the absence of placental structures confirm that M. mento exhibits aplacental viviparity. These results document the first population-level description of the reproductive biology of M. mento, redefine its reproductive mode, and provide baseline information essential for implementing species-specific management and conservation measures in Chilean waters. Zinc (Zn) is an essential trace element that plays a key role as a cofactor for over 300 enzymes involved in metabolic processes, protein synthesis, and gene expression regulation. Zn supplementation is used in the prevention and treatment of infectious, dermatological, and reproductive system diseases. Legal regulations allow for a relatively wide range of mineral content in this product category (from −20% to +45% of the declared value). The study aimed to analyze the quality of food supplements containing Zn—compliance with declared Zn content was assessed. The study included 80 preparations. The preparations varied in terms of declared Zn content, pharmaceutical form, chemical form of Zn, composition, and primary mode of action. Zn content was determined by atomic absorption spectrometry after prior mineralization of the samples in concentrated nitric acid in a closed microwave system. It was estimated that 70% of food supplements contained Zn within the acceptable range. It should be emphasized that 23.75% of the preparations contained more Zn than the permissible range of Zn content, and 6.25% contained less—both of these groups of preparations may be associated with a health risk. From a regulatory perspective, these results highlight the need for continuous surveillance of the food supplement market to improve consumer safety. Full article

This chapter examines shifting genealogies of knowledge and moral authority in Western Kenya by unsettling the hierarchical opposition between “indigenous” and “scientific” knowledge regimes as ways of knowing and acting. Treating pedagogy as a critical mode of social reproduction, it juxtaposes practices of taboo in the Mount Elgon region, as inherited prohibitions that regulate relations among people, animals, and land, with the deployment of animated educational media in Mumias by Scientific Animations Without Borders (SAWBO) as a technocratic apparatus for imparting new agrarian knowledge and practices. By staging an encounter between these two modes of social knowledge reproduction—both understood as moral technologies that shape conduct, sustain ecological balance, and transmit communal values (one grounded in taboo, the other in technical instruction)—the paper re-situates an “indigenous”/“scientific” inequality within longer genealogies spanning precolonial, colonial, and contemporary postcolonial and developmental formations. By foregrounding commitments to these knowledge traditions, the paper stages how taboos and educational animations alike can embody evolving modes of community self-determination and ethical stewardship. It ultimately argues that the force of the “indigenous < scientific” inequality lies primarily not in correcting its hierarchical opposition but in the ongoing struggle over which modes of life will be allowed to endure. Decolonizing these genealogies requires attending to the marked/unmarked distinctions that structure bodies, discourse, and social reproduction in the present. Full article

Portuguese ceramic tile (azulejo) production has evolved significantly since its beginnings in the 16th century. While historic tiles reflect well-established traditional techniques and styles, modern and contemporary works began to explore new aesthetic and material possibilities, introducing textures, surface effects, and experimental approaches that challenge conventional conservation methods. This study examines a contemporary Portuguese tile panel dated from 1987, featuring decorative effect glazes with crater and crazing textures, which were characterized and reproduced. Analytical techniques, including optical microscopy, micro-X-ray fluorescence spectrometry, and Raman spectroscopy in microscopic mode, were employed to characterize material composition and formation mechanisms. Results showed that the crater-effect glazes were achieved with a silica-rich glaze recipe with MnO2 and ZrO2. The crazing effect developed in regions where unmelted crystalline silica induced internal stresses within a lead-silicate glaze, contributing to localized degradation. Experimental reproductions of the glazes, guided by analytical data, were conducted to better understand their formation and inform conservation strategies. The results provide essential insights for the technical assessment, documentation, and preservation of contemporary ceramic artworks featuring decorative effect glazes and contribute to the broader field of cultural heritage conservation. This study was designed, for the first time, to fully characterize the corpus luteum’s (CL) dynamics, echotexture, and ovarian blood flow on the ipsilateral side of the CL during different stages of the follicular wave in spontaneously non-mated camels (Camelus dromedarius) and to correlate the CL’s size echotexture with Doppler parameters. Of 20 non-mated camels, only 7 exhibited spontaneous ovulation. B- and color-mode analyses of the CL were estimated; CL frozen image echotextures [CL echogenicity (CLE) and CL heterogeneity (CLH)] and ovarian artery (OV. A.) dynamics were recorded, and ultrasound scanning was performed. Blood sampling and progesterone (P4) levels were measured after ovulation. CL diameter and echotexture were elevated (p = 0.025 and p = 0.037) at the mid-maturation stage and compared to the early growth and late regression stages (1.03 ± 0.45/cm and 82.65 ± 2.87 for CLE and 33.65 ± 1.83 for CLH vs. 1.98 ± 0.88 cm; 66.52 ± 4.32 for CLE and 15.66 ± 0.25 for CLH vs. 1.02 ± 0.02 cm, 65.12 ± 2.66 for CLE, and 19.32 ± 1.33 for CLH), as those parameters are critical in the determination of CL activity. Ipsilateral OV. A. diameter increased (p = 0.021) in the mid-maturation and regression stages, with a significant elevation in Doppler velocities (p = 0.025) in the maturation stage, with a decline in Doppler indices (p = 0.013), while the contralateral side was not affected. Ipsilateral mean velocity (Vm; cm/s) and blood flow volume (BFV; mL/min) were increased in the mid-maturation stage (23.55 ± 0.66 cm/s and 25.62 ± 0.32 mL/min). CL diameter was positively correlated with the CL’s total colored area/pixels (r = 0.81; p = 0.001), total colored area % (r = 0.93; p = 0.001), and OV. A. velocities (r = 0.96; p = 0.001). In addition, there was a positive correlation between CLH and OV. A.BFV (r = 0.89; p = 0.001). After spontaneous ovulation, the CL increases in diameter and reaches its peak on day 12, with an elevation in the P4 level at day 10, and the total colored area of the CL continues to elevate until day 14. Ipsilateral OV. A. blood flow is elevated and linked to changes that occur in the CL’s total coloration %. Evaluating luteal function in camels presents several challenges due to the species’ unique reproductive physiology. Full article

The Krabi mouth-brooding fighting fish, Betta simplex Kottelat, 1994, is a critically endangered and endemic fish species in Krabi province, Southern Thailand. Little information is available on its reproductive ecology and early developmental morphology, which are essential for studying its conservation. Generally, B. simplex is considered an adaptable animal that can tolerate lower alkalinity and higher hardness compared to its natural environment conditions. In this study, wild broodstocks of B. simplex were collected from the reported type localities and bred in captivity under laboratory conditions for size-series collection. Some biological aspects of B. simplex in its natural environmental conditions were determined. We found that its flaring and mating behavior was similar to those of bubble-nesting fighting fish but did not involve bubble-nest building. The fertilized eggs and pre-flexion larvae were nurtured in the mouth cavity of parental males within 11–12 (mode = 11) days after fertilization (DAF). The first-release offspring developed to the post-flexion stage with a body size of 4.39 ± 0.01 mm of standard length (SL; n = 6) and then to the juvenile stage within 30 days after release with 11.72 ± 0.62 mm SL (n = 4). Thus, we propose the following linear regression equation for growth prediction by age (DAF) and body size (SL; mm): age = 0.2425 SL + 1.7036 (r2 = 0.9549). The findings of this study will deepen our knowledge of the reproduction and ontogeny of B. simplex and contribute to its future conservation and management. Full article

The psyllid genus Cacopsylla comprises mainly bisexually reproducing species; however, some members of this genus exhibit a unisexual mode of reproduction. Using an integrative approach that combines molecular and cytogenetic methods, as well as Wolbachia screening, we conducted a comprehensive study of the Palaearctic species C. ledi. We show that this species uses various reproductive strategies (bisexual and parthenogenetic) across its distribution range. Our findings indicate that the bisexual mode of reproduction has emerged at least twice in the evolutionary history of C. ledi. Bisexual populations in southern Fennoscandia are of ancestral origin, whereas the bisexual mode of reproduction observed in northern Fennoscandia represents a recent secondary transition from parthenogenesis. We report that in the first case, parthenogenetic and bisexual lineages can be easily distinguished not only cytogenetically but also by DNA barcoding, while in the second case, “bisexual” individuals share DNA barcodes with parthenogenetic ones. A comprehensive Wolbachia screening (1140 specimens across the entire distribution range) revealed Wolbachia infection in every specimen of C. ledi, indicating a significant role of the endosymbiont in the biology and evolution of this species. Abstract
The Artemia exhibit broad environmental adaptability and distinct reproductive modes, making them ideal for studying stress tolerance. The Artemia exhibit broad environmental adaptability and distinct reproductive modes, making them ideal for studying stress tolerance. Solar UV-B radiation poses a threat to aquatic organisms; however, for Artemia—a key aquatic organism characterized by a wide altitudinal distribution range and unique reproductive modes—it remains unclear how their UV-B resistance varies with altitudinal gradients, developmental stages, and reproductive modes. Here, we evaluated six Artemia species/lineages (three bisexual species, three parthenogenetic lineages) from 113 to 4700 m altitude across three developmental stages (embryo, nauplius, adult) under gradient UV-B doses. Key results: (1) UV-B resistance showed a dose-dependent positive correlation with altitude, especially under high-dose UV-B (6.4 kJ·m−2, R2 = 0.72, p < 0.01); (2) Adults had the highest resistance, while nauplii were the most vulnerable; (3) Bisexual species had 41–57% higher adult survival rates than parthenogenetic lineages at similar altitudes, but parthenogenetic lineages showed higher embryo relative hatching rates. These findings clarify the adaptive traits of Artemia in response to UV-B stress. Full article

Spodoptera frugiperda J.E. Smith (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) represents a major threat to maize production across Pakistan, with chemical control serving as the predominant management approach. The intensive application of insecticides, particularly diamide compounds such as chlorantraniliprole, has escalated concerns regarding resistance evolution in field populations. This study evaluated the insecticidal efficacy of seven commonly used compounds against geographically diverse field-collected populations of S. frugiperda from major maize-growing regions of Pakistan, revealing significant inter-population variability in susceptibility profiles. Chlorantraniliprole was selected for comprehensive transgenerational screening based on moderate baseline LC50 values and optimal laboratory colony establishment parameters. A representative field strain underwent six consecutive generations of selection pressure at LC70 concentrations, resulting in a 4.48-fold increase in resistance levels with a realized heritability (h2) of 0.198. Predictive modeling using established quantitative genetic frameworks demonstrated that resistance evolution rates are critically dependent on both selection intensity and genetic parameters. Under constant h2 = 0.198, increasing selection intensity substantially accelerated resistance development, with 10-fold resistance achievable in approximately 18 generations at 80% selection intensity (slope = 2.696) compared to 36 generations at lower intensities (slope = 4.696). Sensitivity analysis revealed that heritability variations from 0.148 to 0.248 could reduce generation requirements from >40 to ~25 generations when slope was maintained at 3.696. Life table analyses of the chlorantraniliprole-selected strain demonstrated significant fitness costs manifested as extended developmental periods, reduced reproductive output, and decreased intrinsic rate of population increase (r), indicating evolutionary trade-offs associated with resistance acquisition. These findings provide crucial insights for developing sustainable management strategies, highlighting the importance of integrating resistance monitoring, refuge-based approaches, and rotation with insecticides of different modes of action to delay resistance buildup in field populations. Such data-driven management frameworks are vital for maintaining the long-term efficacy of diamides in Pakistan’s maize production systems. Full article

Universities have become central arenas in which the terms of racial justice are negotiated, contested, and at times sanctioned. This article examines how decolonial discourse in Belgian higher education navigates the tension between dialogic and authoritative discourse. Decolonial discourse in Belgium tackles racial illiteracy or the lack of institutional capacity to engage with the histories and contemporary realities of race. The study draws on a qualitative analysis of thirteen publicly available documents, including open letters, manifestos, and institutional responses produced between 2017 and 2021, with a dialogic analysis of five key texts within the Ghent University Association. Using Bakhtin’s framework of dialogic and authoritative discourse, operationalised through Matusov and von Duyke’s concept of internally persuasive discourse (IPD), the analysis identifies three modes of responding to racial illiteracy: appeals to personal conviction (IPD1), the formulation of new institutional norms (IPD2), and dialogic inquiry that treats illiteracy as a shared pedagogical problem (IPD3). The findings show that while decolonial movements expose the structural and epistemic conditions that sustain racial illiteracy, institutional responses from students, staff, and governing bodies often address these critiques by enforcing ‘decolonial’ personal convictions and institutional norms, risking the reproduction of the very illiteracy they seek to remedy. The article concludes that decolonial transformation requires cultivating dialogic practices that position racial illiteracy as a collective site of learning within the university’s civic mission. Mitochondria play essential roles for animal reproduction, influencing not only cellular energetics but also gamete quality, inheritance and evolutionary patterns. Currently, most research still focuses on chordates or mitochondrial diseases and their impact on the health of germ cells. However, few studies focus on integrative synthesis that connect comparative morphology, inheritance mechanisms and evolutionary theory. In this review, we integrate cross-phyla evidence to explore two interconnected dimensions: the fate of mitochondria during gametogenesis and the strategy shaping their evolution. We compare mitochondrial morphology, distribution, and metabolic strategies in gametogenesis, revealing how these traits align with reproductive modes and ecological adaptations. Then we further discuss how mitochondrial genome evolution, bottleneck effects and mito-nuclear coevolution contribute to germline stability and maternal inheritance. Special attention is given to exceptional systems such as Doubly Uniparental Inheritance (DUI) in bivalves, which challenges conventional mode of strictly maternal transmission and illuminates the flexibility of mito-nuclear evolution. Altogether, these perspectives highlight mitochondria as gatekeepers and evolutionary recorders in the reproductive systems across metazoans, providing a unifying framework for future research across ecology, evolution and molecular biology.
