This paper examines the intersection between digital learning environments and multilingual education policies, with a focus on the linguistic integration of migrant students in Europe. It explores how technology, particularly mobile-assisted learning, artificial intelligence, and immersive tools, can strengthen language acquisition and promote social inclusion. Drawing on European and Greek policy frameworks, the study shows how digital pedagogies operationalize multilingualism as both an educational objective and a social justice priority. Based on a qualitative review of contemporary research and institutional reports, the findings indicate that digitally enhanced learning environments act as catalysts for equity, intercultural dialogue, and active participation when supported by coherent pedagogical design. The paper concludes by outlining policy recommendations for the development of multilingual digital ecosystems that align technological innovation with democratic, inclusive, and human-centred education. Overall, the analysis highlights that technology-mediated multilingualism can effectively reinforce participation, inclusion, and linguistic integration when embedded within robust policy structures and sound pedagogical practice. Mental health inequities affecting migrant populations stem from structural determinants that hierarchize access to resources, recognition, and social protection. Among these determinants, structural racism plays a central role in the experiences of racialised Brazilian immigrant women in Portugal, producing vulnerabilities at the intersection of race, gender, nationality, and migration status. Grounded in intersectional feminist and decolonial epistemology, this study analyses how structural racism operates as a health determinant through specific mechanisms traversing material conditions of life, distress trajectories, and experiences of psychological care, and it examines how these women navigate the limitations of mental health services, identifying conditions for a practice committed to racial equity. Fifteen semi-structured interviews were conducted with racialised Brazilian immigrant women and analyzed through Reflexive Thematic Analysis. The findings indicate that racism is manifested through professional devaluation, labour precarity, documentation instability, and linguistic racialisation, impacting access to rights and the production of psychological distress. Mental health inequities are not limited to barriers to access, as institutional and clinical dynamics tend to individualize distress and disregard its historical and social bases, operating as epistemic violence. The community-based strategies mobilized by participants challenge models centred on individual intervention. This study underscores the need for structurally competent approaches and for institutional reforms oriented toward equity and racial justice within mental health systems. Full article

Social media is an integral part of everyday life for women from migrant and refugee backgrounds and is sometimes recognised as a ‘critical lifeline’ enabling access to essential support during settlement. Despite this, Culturally and Linguistically Diverse (CALD) women in Australia often have limited and uneven access to critical social media literacy education opportunities, and there remains a lack of in-depth research exploring what CALD women want to learn and how they wish to participate in such educational interventions. Adopting an education justice approach, this article advances a framework for social media literacy education developed with women from refugee backgrounds. The study employed semi-structured interviews and co-design workshops with women from refugee backgrounds, alongside staff from local public libraries and refugee support organisations. The study demonstrates that women from refugee backgrounds primarily use social media for communication and connection, but are also interested in learning how to use these platforms to navigate sexism, racism, and other systemic barriers to settlement. The proposed framework—which can be adopted by public libraries and other grassroots organisations—responds directly to women’s calls for peer-led, value-driven, context-specific, and culturally responsive social media literacy interventions. Against the backdrop of rapid development in megacities, urban park green spaces serve as essential public resources whose accessibility and equity directly affect residents’ quality of life and broader social justice. This study addresses the imbalance between the spatial distribution of green space resources and the socio-demographic characteristics of different population groups in megacities. It takes the six central districts of Beijing as the study area and integrates data from 457 urban parks. The research applies the Gaussian two-step floating catchment area (G2SFCA) method and bivariate spatial autocorrelation analysis (Moran’s I) to systematically evaluate the equity of urban park green space provision across multiple social dimensions, including economic status, educational attainment, and vulnerable groups. The results indicate that urban park green spaces in Beijing’s six central districts exhibit a pronounced central and northern advantage, with significant deficits in southern and peripheral areas. High accessibility and greater per capita green space are concentrated in core and high-housing-price districts, overlapping with high-income and highly educated populations. In contrast, vulnerable groups and migrant workers are more likely to reside in green-space-deficient areas, facing a structural “high population density–low green space provision” disadvantage, reflecting clear social inequities. In addition, inequity is more pronounced at the walking scale than at the cycling scale. The study reveals a dual mismatch in green space provision across both spatial and social dimensions within a megacity context. The findings suggest that future urban planning should shift from quantitative expansion to the optimization of existing green space resources. Planning strategies should prioritize vulnerable groups and adopt a people-oriented approach. Policymakers should allocate greater support to southern and peripheral areas, increase the provision of pocket parks, and improve slow-mobility systems. These measures can more precisely safeguard equitable access to green space for disadvantaged populations and promote the realization of spatial justice. Full article

Women in resource-scarce communities navigate daily scarcity, structural neglect, and gendered violence, leaving profound but often invisible impacts on mental and reproductive health. Women play an active role in the Water–Energy–Food (WEF) space; they provide water, food, and household security daily. This study investigates how chronic deprivation across the WEF nexus shapes experiences of psychological distress, reproductive vulnerability, and social marginalization in South African settings: Lorentzville, a migrant urban informal settlement, and Mqanduli, a peri-urban Eastern Cape community. Using ethnographic methods, including in-depth interviews, focus group discussions, and participatory observation, and an analytical framework combining structural violence and feminist political ecology, we show that insecurity over water, energy, and food constrains reproductive autonomy, amplifies self-reported symptoms of anxiety and depression, and drives coping and adaptation strategies such as informal work, transactional sex, and fragile social support networks. These strategies, while mitigating immediate risks, cannot fully offset systemic harms. By foregrounding women’s lived experiences, this study extends the WEF nexus framework to include embodied, emotional, and reproductive dimensions, linking historical legacies of colonial and apartheid neglect to contemporary inequities. The findings offer critical insights for integrated health, social, and resource policy interventions that center on gender, care, and justice within environmental, wellbeing, and livelihood. Visual cues in urban street environments shape residents’ perceived safety, and these perceptions often differ across social groups. Using Shanghai as a case study, this research focuses on two vulnerable populations: older adults and migrants. In the context of rapid urban transformation and increasingly fine-grained governance, perceived safety not only reflects environmental experience but also relates to whether different social groups can receive equitable perceptual support and access to opportunities for public-space use. We trained a deep learning model and rated perceived safety using over 160,000 street-level images, integrated with demographic census data at the neighborhood level, to systematically examine inequalities in visual environment perception and underlying group-specific mechanisms. However, existing studies have largely relied on small-sample surveys or average-effect analyses, and systematic evidence remains limited that can simultaneously characterize city-scale inequalities in perceived safety, disparities in group exposure, and group-specific mechanisms, while translating findings into actionable guidance for targeted governance. Firstly, we quantified spatial inequality in perceived safety using the Gini coefficient and the Theil T index. Decomposition results indicate that the remaining disparity is primarily associated with between-group differences linked to social structure. Nonparametric tests and multiple linear regression further identified significant interactions between demographic characteristics (the share of older adults and the migrant proportion) and visual environmental features, confirming group-differentiated responses to comparable streetscape conditions. In addition, we developed a priority governance index that combines perceived safety scores with vulnerability indicators to spatially identify neighborhoods requiring targeted interventions. Results suggest relatively low overall spatial inequality in perceived safety at the city scale, while decomposition analyses reveal clear group-structured disparities between central and peripheral areas and between local residents and migrants. Migrants are more frequently concentrated in neighborhoods with lower perceived safety. Priority intervention areas are primarily older-adult communities in central districts and migrant settlements in peripheral areas, characterized by lower perceived safety and higher demographic vulnerability. These findings underscore the need to shift urban renewal from uniform improvements toward differentiated strategies that account for perceptual equity and social identity. Our main contribution is not the development of a new network architecture but the alignment of image-based perception estimates with demographic vulnerability at the neighborhood scale. By combining inequality decomposition with tests of interaction mechanisms, we provide governance-relevant evidence for identifying priority intervention areas and advancing fine-grained renewal decisions oriented toward visual justice. In recent years, the rapid construction of government-subsidized rental housing (GRH) has partially alleviated housing pressures caused by the growing number of migrant workers and persistently high rental costs in Shanghai. However, its overriding emphasis on construction and allocation efficiency neglects the realization of spatial justice, particularly in underdeveloped urban areas. This study adopts a mixed-methods approach to examine all 25 GRHs completed and operational in Shanghai’s Five New Towns, employing morphological characteristics and inherent differences to analyze their impacts on spatial justice. First, this study integrates urban functions and spatial justice elements to establish a systematic classification framework and an evaluative system for GRH, and then assesses the achievement of spatial justice across existing projects. Subsequently, morphological analysis is employed to examine how GRHs shape the socio-spatial context of new towns, thereby assessing their role in reinforcing or undermining spatial justice. Finally, this study establishes data logic between typological factors and morphological characteristics and analyzes the inherent differences among various types of GRH by using Fisher’s exact test. The results reveal that although the existing GRHs are situated in different urban geospatial contexts, they exhibit a severe homogenization phenomenon in terms of construction modality, planning layout, and community boundary, with only the residential scale showing inherent differences. The research findings highlight a systematic neglect of spatial justice in the current GRH development paradigm and reveal the underlying causes. This study contributes to the discourse on spatial justice in GRH development by broadening its dimensions, and it provides valuable insights for promoting the realization of spatial justice through multi-tiered policy framework, place-making design strategy, and a joint operation model. The integration experiences and vulnerabilities of migrants in host states are a critical area of study. This qualitative research, grounded in a human rights and social justice framework, investigates the systemic injustices and integration challenges faced by Zimbabwean migrants in Johannesburg, South Africa. Through in-depth interviews with 16 participants and six key informants, the study employs thematic analysis to uncover the socio-cultural, economic, and political barriers that impede successful integration. The findings reveal pervasive issues such as prejudice, discrimination, xenophobia, and language barriers, which exacerbate the migrants’ vulnerabilities and make it difficult to support their families. They, at times, fail to buy food and pay school fees for their children. Despite these challenges, the resilience and creativity of Zimbabwean migrants are evident. The study’s unique contribution lies in its widening of the genealogy of theories of migration by incorporating African-centred migration perspectives, which are grounded in social justice perspectives. This critiques the Global North-dominated narratives that have historically sidelined the lived experiences of migrants from the Global South. The study offers a comprehensive examination of the interplay between systemic barriers and migrant resilience, offering new insights into how migration involves and affects families. This research calls for the development and implementation of rights-based integration frameworks to address systemic issues and enhance the well-being of migrants so that they can better support their families and kinsmen. Using the Danjiangkou Reservoir resettlement as a case study, this research adopts a policy lifecycle perspective to examine the evolutionary mechanisms of livelihood transformation and institutional adaptation under large-scale hydraulic development. The findings reveal that China’s resettlement governance is not merely an economic practice of resource redistribution and livelihood reconstruction but a deeper process of institutional learning and social reconfiguration. The transformation of Danjiangkou migrants—from administrative dependence to self-organized recovery and finally to development empowerment—reflects a structural shift in governance logic from control-oriented mobilization to collaborative and inclusive modernization. The study elucidates the dynamic interaction between institutional supply and social agency, arguing that the state acts not only as a resource provider but as an institutional recalibrator that fosters endogenous governance capacity through social self-organization. The identity transformation of migrants—from excluded subjects to integrated citizens—demonstrates that recognition, participation, and social capital are central to achieving social justice and sustainable governance. Practically, sustainable resettlement requires institutional flexibility and social empowerment, emphasizing long-term capacity building over short-term relief. The Danjiangkou experience reveals the deeper logic of Chinese modernization—a transition from control to collaboration, from survival to development, and from outsiders to citizens—offering valuable insights for equitable and resilient resettlement governance. Learning the host language is a crucial factor in the settlement of migrants and refugees in a new country. It offers opportunities, but can also generate exclusion, marginalization, and isolation, hindering the possibilities of participation and the creation of social networks. Host language classes, therefore, play a crucial role, fostering critical awareness that enables learners to act within their social and cultural context. This promotes agency, autonomy, and empowerment, transforming differences into productivity and fostering social justice. This article focuses on classes of Portuguese as a host language (HL) in northern Portugal, examining how these contexts shape learners’ relationship with the language beyond depoliticized or subaltern approaches. It discusses the main obstacles and difficulties in these educational settings, as well as mechanisms that could contribute to more democratic and effective practices. Drawing on interviews with teachers (n = 10), trainers (n = 4), volunteers (n = 8), and students (n = 20) involved in the HL learning process, the content analysis highlights how policies and pedagogical practices impact students and how they are interpreted by these actors, revealing their impact on processes of participation, belonging, and citizenship. The results indicate an emergent form of collective autonomy in the relationship among students, the host society, and teachers, which means that teaching practices encompass not only the development of communication skills but also the civic and political awareness of learners. Lastly, while the language teachers identified more practical barriers in these teaching and learning contexts, the students described emotional and sociocultural obstacles. Full article

Migrating people fleeing violence and persecution face narrowing options to seek safety through the U.S. immigration courts. Social work’s historical and ongoing commitment to immigrant health and immigrant justice supports an enlarged presence within asylum and other immigration processes. In the role of experts, social work clinicians can evaluate displaced people to collect evidence of harm, draft reports and affidavits for the lawyer, and may even testify to educate the court on the physical and mental sequelae of violence and trauma. They play an essential part in communicating the complexity of migrating people’s stories to adjudicators. Social work clinicians seeking to join this work will attune to cultural humility, relationship building, and an opportunity to support displaced peoples’ human right to safety, in line with the skills and values of the profession. This paper serves as a brief introduction to how clinical social workers can use their mental health expertise to contribute to immigrant legal proceedings, as well as a call to action to invite both new and established social workers to use their clinical skills to meet our profession’s ethical obligations to the human rights of migrating people. Despite the presence of strong international and regional instruments for protecting human rights and promoting social justice, migrant and refugee populations continue to experience gross human rights violations. Xenophobic attacks are a global phenomenon that have left foreigners and refugees vulnerable. This article uses a multi-sectoral perspective to explore the socio-economic services to address the effects of xenophobic attacks on refugee entrepreneurs in South Africa. A snowball sampling technique was used to select 10 participants for the study. Data were collected using one-on-one interviews. Thematic analysis was used to analyse the collected data. The findings revealed that multi-sectoral services should be provided to refugee entrepreneurs who are victims of xenophobic attacks. The paper also discusses the role of the government in providing aid and security, the role of social workers and civil society in facilitating community support, spiritual support, and support from fellow refugees, geared towards minimising the effects of xenophobic attacks. The conclusion is that social workers should coordinate relief programmes between the government and other service providers in the aftermath of xenophobic attacks. It recommends multi-sectoral and multi-disciplinary interventions to address the aftermath of the xenophobic attacks. Full article

Public cooperation is crucial for the police to successfully perform their duties. Yet marginalised and vulnerable groups facing uncertainty about their societal status often significantly mistrust the police. Migrant populations experiencing forced labour are marginalised and uncertain groups that face significant challenges for police in gaining trust and cooperation, especially since many have escaped conflict or authoritarian regimes, or experienced trauma and exploitation prior to encountering police in democratic contexts. This paper examines the potential role of policing agencies in Anglophone countries in addressing forced labour in migrant communities. Whilst recognising that police are not ideal first responders to this issue, the paper acknowledges that they often represent the first visible state response with the legal authority to support or detain individuals. This paper reviews the literature on forced labour and migration and presents a conceptual argument, applying procedural justice as a theoretical framework to assess its potential for improving the policing of forced labour, particularly among newly arrived migrants still establishing social relationships, bonds, and capital. The paper concludes by arguing that procedural justice may help police earn the trust and confidence of migrant populations experiencing forced labour and help address labour exploitation, although this trust-building remains hampered by the concomitant harms caused by crimmigration systems. Recognising linguistic diversity as a person’s characteristic is arguably central to their multilingual identity and is important as an equity issue. Different indicators suggest that students with migrant backgrounds, whose linguistic diversity is often not reflected in European education systems, tend to underperform compared to their peers without migrant backgrounds. There is a dire need, therefore, to alleviate the educational inequalities that negatively affect some of the most plurilingual students in European school systems. This can be carried out by revisiting assessment tools. Developing assessments to make children’s full linguistic and cultural repertoire visible, and what they can do with it, is one way that potential inequalities in school systems and assessment practices can be addressed so that cultural and linguistic responsiveness of assessments and practices can be improved. This paper explores the concept of discontinuities or mismatches between the assessment of plurilingual children’s linguistic practices in one primary school in Catalonia and their actual linguistic realities, including heritage languages. It asks: (1) What are the children’s linguistic profiles? (2) What mismatches and/or educational inequalities do they experience? and (3) How does the co-creation and use of a rubric assessing plurilingual and intercultural competence attempt to mitigate these mismatches and inequalities? Mismatches are identified using a context- and participant-relevant reflection tool, based on 18 reflective questions related to aspects of social justice. Results highlight that mismatches exist between children’s plurilingual and intercultural knowledge and skills compared to the school, education system, curriculum, and wider regional and European policy. These mismatches highlight two plurilingual visions for language education. The paper highlights how language assessment tools and practices can be made more culturally and linguistically fair for plurilingual children with migration backgrounds. Full article

Migrant Perceptions of Criminal Justice Systems: A Comparative Study of U.S. and Home Country Systems

Background: The United States has the highest number of immigrants in the world, with over 46 million foreign-born residents as of 2022. A growing number of migrants originate from Latin America, driven by factors such as economic instability, food insecurity, and crime. This study explores their experiences and perceptions regarding trust in the criminal justice system (CJS) in both their home countries and the United States. Methods: This study surveyed 500 migrants at a transitional institution in a U.S.–Mexico border city in the summer of 2023. The survey assessed confidence in law enforcement, immigration officers, courts, and government institutions using a 5-point Likert scale. Results: Migrants reported significantly higher confidence in the U.S. CJS compared to that of their home countries. Multivariate analysis revealed that satisfaction with border officials, documentation status, English proficiency, and health were positively associated with confidence in the U.S. CJS, while employment status, traveling with family, and fear of crime correlated with lower confidence. Conclusions: This study highlights the stark contrast in migrants’ confidence levels between their home countries and the U.S. criminal justice system. While migrants view the U.S. system as more legitimate, challenges such as fear of crime and legal uncertainties persist. Full article
