Despite increased investment in information and communication technologies (ICT), many micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs) struggle to translate digital adoption into improved business performance, particularly in post-pandemic contexts. This study addresses this gap by examining the mediating role of knowledge management (KM) in the relationship between ICT integration and business performance in MSMEs in Michoacán, Mexico. A quantitative, construct associate research framework was employed using survey data from 200 randomly selected MSMEs. Structural equation modeling was applied to test the hypothesized relationships. The results reveal that ICT integration does not have a direct significant effect on business performance. However, it significantly enhances KM processes, which in turn positively influence performance outcomes. Furthermore, KM fully mediates the relationship between ICT integration and business performance, indicating that the value of ICT is realized through effective knowledge processes rather than technology alone. These findings underscore the importance of aligning ICT investments with KM strategies to achieve superior performance. The study contributes to the integration of the resource-based view (RBV) and knowledge-based view (KBV), offering empirical evidence from an emerging economy context. Full article

As micro, small and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs) compete with limited resources, lightweight systems are needed to secure their digital assets. Fuzzy vaults (FVs) are useful for protecting secrets and, when applied to biometric systems, provide error-tolerance and privacy to enrolled biometric features. Combining multiple biometric traits also improves performance against attacks like spoofing in multimodal (MM) authentication systems. However, the design of the FV and the biometric-fusion method applied can limit the system’s effectiveness. This study systematically evaluates recent studies on FVs and MM systems and presents an up-to-date review to identify gaps, give directions for future studies, and, ultimately, improve the design of these systems. The research targeting MSMEs was carried out in two parts, with the first search focused on MM systems and the second on FVs, following the PRISMA guidelines. The main findings include the need to optimise the resource intensity of FV systems for the authentication of large numbers of individuals. It also found the need to make the model compatible with other biometric modalities as greater focus is on minutiae features. By reviewing these systems, we aim to foster the development of lightweight MM FV models to provide privacy and security in MSMEs. Full article

The shifting business landscape globally and within Saudi Arabia toward environmental sustainability requires a significant transformation in the business models of micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) to achieve long-term sustainable performance. This study investigates the factors that enhance firms’ sustainable business model innovation (SBMI), particularly in achieving sustainable competitive advantage (SCA) within the context of MSMEs in Saudi Arabia. Data were collected from more than 440 MSMEs using structured, web-based, closed-ended questionnaires and analyzed using partial least squares structural equation modeling. Drawing on the dynamic capabilities view and network theory, the findings indicate that entrepreneurial networks (ENs) are positively associated with dynamic capabilities, providing firms with the information and knowledge required to transform their capabilities toward greater sustainability. ENs are also positively associated with opportunity recognition, suggesting that MSMEs with favorable network positions are better able to identify and seize sustainable innovation-oriented opportunities. This, in turn, enables SBMI, which serves as a critical conduit between ENs, dynamic capabilities, opportunity recognition, and SCA. The findings suggest that managers should prioritize strengthening internal capabilities alongside ENs to better identify and capitalize on opportunities. Full article

This study developed internally consistent scenarios for tourism village development to strengthen destination competitiveness and support the local economy. Using an exploratory–constructive design and the Cross-Impact Balance method, the study structured the relationships among development elements, competitiveness, and local economic development into 13 descriptors with 52 states. Expert judgment was used to construct a cross-impact matrix, and ScenarioWizard identified 18 consistent scenarios and their Total Impact Scores. Four scenarios showed positive consistency scores, with one high-road scenario emerging as the most consistent pathway toward very high competitiveness and a stronger role for tourism villages in the local economy. This scenario was characterized by a clear value proposition, full integration of local MSMEs and products, diversified revenue sources, equitable benefit distribution, strong managerial and digital capacity, transparent governance, multi-stakeholder partnerships, strategic use of public funds, and a structured digital marketing and booking system. These findings suggest that policy efforts should prioritize coordinated improvements in value proposition, MSME integration, revenue diversification, governance, partnerships, and digital management to move tourism villages toward the high-road scenario. In the current context of digital transformation, Micro-, Small-, and Medium-Sized Enterprises (MSMEs) are increasingly exposed to cybersecurity risks. This exposure is intensified by the limited adoption of international standards for identifying impacts, low budgets, and shortages of trained personnel, which collectively result in the absence of structured control plans for mitigating cyber risks. (1) This study proposes a mechanism for selecting a cybersecurity risk analysis and management methodology suited to Colombian MSMEs by applying the multi-criteria Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) method. (2) The employed approach is qualitative and follows the AHP procedure to select the most suitable option that can be applied to cybersecurity. This selection process evaluated different criteria in five standards: ISO/IEC 27005:2022, NIST SP 800-30, OCTAVE-S, MAGERIT, and EBIOS-RM. (3) The AHP method enabled, in a practical manner, the selection of OCTAVE-S as the primary methodology, complemented with elements from other standards. Finally, the proposed methodology was implemented in a cloud-based web application called the Risk Analysis Module, integrated into the Keru IT security platform. It is concluded that the multi-criteria AHP method is effective and allows organizations to select the standards most appropriate to their needs, with potential applicability to other types of decisions. This study investigates the determinants of FinTech adoption and its role in supporting financial inclusion among micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) in South Sumatra, Indonesia. The analysis applies an extended Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology (UTAUT) framework that incorporates digital financial literacy, artificial intelligence literacy, green self-identity, and perceived green finance. Data from 632 MSMEs, comprising 377 rural and 255 urban enterprises, were analyzed using partial least squares structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM), multi-group analysis (MGA), and importance performance map analysis (IPMA). The results indicate that facilitating conditions represent the most influential determinant of FinTech adoption among rural MSMEs, while effort expectancy emerges as the dominant factor in urban enterprises. FinTech adoption also significantly strengthens both FinTech continuance intention and financial inclusion across the two groups, highlighting the role of digital financial technologies in promoting inclusive economic development. In addition, the IPMA shows that rural MSMEs place strong emphasis on facilitating conditions as the key driver of FinTech adoption, whereas urban MSMEs prioritize effort expectancy. By extending the UTAUT framework with sustainability-related constructs, this study provides new evidence on how digital financial innovation can support inclusive growth and contribute to Sustainable Development Goal 8. The circular economy (CE) has emerged as a central policy framework for advancing sustainable urban development; however, empirical evidence regarding the role of micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs) in metropolitan CE transitions remains limited, particularly in arid regions. This study examines how private sector firms and MSMEs engage with CE practices within an arid metropolitan context, using the Dammam Metropolitan Area (Saudi Arabia) as an illustrative case study. Adopting a place-based and governance-sensitive analytical perspective grounded in urban studies scholarship, the research employs a structured quantitative survey of 180 firms across key urban–industrial sectors. The analysis investigates levels of CE awareness, adoption patterns, perceived barriers, support needs, and future expectations. The findings indicate that MSMEs primarily engage in resource-based and efficiency-oriented circular practices, while more systemic models, such as supply-chain integration and platform-based circular solutions, remain limited. Moreover, capability-related factors, particularly skills and technological capacity, exert a stronger influence on adoption than awareness alone. Importantly, the study identifies a high level of latent willingness among MSMEs to invest in circular practices under supportive policy and institutional conditions. The discussion reframes CE transitions as governance-mediated urban development processes, emphasizing the importance of metropolitan coordination, institutional capacity-building, and shared spatial infrastructure. By grounding the analysis in the case of the Dammam Metropolitan Area, the study contributes to urban studies and CE scholarship by positioning MSMEs as conditionally willing system-building actors whose engagement is essential for advancing inclusive and place-sensitive circular transitions in arid metropolitan regions. Culinary micro-, small-, and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs) play a critical role in socio-economic sustainability, yet operate under heightened risks related to product quality, food safety, and business reputation. Although research on collaboration and co-creation often portrays openness as a desirable organizational orientation, limited attention has been paid to how MSMEs strategically regulate openness across their value-chain activities. This study explores how culinary MSMEs organize collaboration and negotiate boundaries between openness and closure. Using a qualitative multi-case approach, the findings show that openness is not uniformly applied but governed by a logic of selective openness shaped by risk exposure, accountability demands, and organizational capacity constraints. Core production activities function as protected zones characterized by strong closure, whereas market-facing functions allow more curated forms of external involvement. By reframing openness as a risk-based governance practice rather than a default collaboration strategy, this study provides a process-level explanation of how MSMEs sustain collaboration without compromising quality control, accountability, and organizational viability. The findings contribute to theorizing boundary governance in small enterprises and offer practical insights for designing collaborative strategies under conditions of risk and constraint. This study investigates the determinants of financial performance among Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) in Indonesia, addressing the critical issues of low accountability and limited access to capital. Grounded in the Resource-Based View and Dynamic Capabilities Theory, the research examines the impact of accounting information systems, management knowledge capability, and digital platform capability on financial performance, mediated by digital innovation. A quantitative approach was employed, utilizing a cluster random sampling survey of 403 MSME owners across Indonesia’s major islands. Data were analyzed using Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) with AMOS software. The results reveal that accounting information systems, management knowledge capability, and digital platforms significantly enhance financial performance. Notably, digital platform capability emerged as the most potent driver. Furthermore, digital innovation proved to be a vital mediator, transforming management knowledge and platform capabilities into tangible financial outcomes. The study concludes that while digital tools provide essential infrastructure, innovation serves as the critical mechanism for unlocking value. These findings suggest that MSMEs must transition from passive technology adoption to active digital innovation to achieve sustainable financial success in the digital economy. Full article

Tourism Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) in underdeveloped regions play a crucial role in driving local economic development and sustaining the tourism ecosystem. Yet they face limitations in innovation capacity and organizational performance. This study aims to develop and test a green innovation model to improve MSME organizational performance and strengthen the tourism ecosystem in East Sumba Regency, Indonesia. This study employed a quantitative approach, collecting data through questionnaires from tourism MSMEs, which were analyzed using Partial Least Squares–Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM). The results indicate that green innovation, represented by product value, technology, networking, marketing, and market demand, is positively and significantly associated with organizational performance, which, in turn, is positively associated with perceived ecosystem performance, as reflected in productivity and resilience. These findings support the view that the relationship between green innovation and perceived tourism ecosystem performance operates indirectly and is dependent on strengthening the operational and financial performance of MSMEs. The novelty of this study lies in integrating the empirical PLS-SEM model with an implementation approach, including the development of training modules and the digitalization of learning, in the context of 3T regions (Frontier, Outermost, and Underdeveloped). The limitations of this study include the use of data from a single time period; further research is recommended to use multi-period data to capture the dynamics of change better. Full article

Micro, small and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs) play a fundamental role in the socio-economic development of Ibero-America. However, they face structural and contextual challenges that constrain their sustainable growth. This study analyses the key determinants of MSMEs’ growth in the region using a quantitative approach based on a Random Forest model applied to a dataset of 1796 observations collected by a team of researchers from different universities affiliated with the Foundation for Strategic Analysis and Development of Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises (FAEDPYME). The results reveal that sound corporate governance, effective human talent management supported by strong organisational communication, the development of skills to reduce the digital divide, innovation, and environmental perception constitute hierarchically significant factors for business development and sustainability. Relevant patterns that enable business sustainability are discussed, and a basis for the formulation of public policies aimed at strengthening the productive fabric is provided. This study offers empirical evidence that contributes to the ongoing discussion on innovation and sustainability among MSMEs in Ibero-America. Full article

Although Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) are the backbone of economic activity and inclusive growth in Indonesia, and recent data from Jambi Province reveal a disconnect between robust post-pandemic recovery and meaningful poverty reduction. While regional GDP climbed from 0.99% to 6% between 2020 and 2024, poverty declined only slightly, highlighting persistent inequality. This study addresses this gap by examining, for the first time in the context of Jambi Province, how e-commerce adoption mediates the link between Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises’ (MSMEs’) quality and the achievement of economic growth, innovation, and Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 1 and 9. Using Structural Equation Modeling–Partial Least Squares (SEM-PLS) on data from 250 Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs), the findings reveal that improvements in Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises’ (MSMEs’) quality alone do not drive growth or reduce poverty unless they are accompanied by the effective adoption of e-commerce. This integrated approach, combining Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises’ (MSMEs’) capacity, digital transformation and regional Sustainable Development Goal outcomes, offers new empirical evidence and practical recommendations for emerging economies. Despite a sectoral and regional focus, the framework and results are generalizable to similar contexts. Future research should expand into additional sectors and regions, and adopt longitudinal analysis to validate and enrich these findings. Full article

Blockchain is widely promoted as a tool for enhancing transparency, trust, and sustainability in business, yet little is known about how creative micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) in emerging economies can meaningfully adopt it for finance and accounting purposes in times of global uncertainty. This study explores how blockchain can be harnessed for transparent and sustainable accounting in Indonesian creative MSMEs amid rapid digital disruption. Using an exploratory qualitative design, we conducted semi-structured, in-depth interviews with 18 owners and key decision-makers across diverse creative subsectors and analysed the data thematically through an integrated Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) and Diffusion of Innovation (DOI) lens. The findings show that participants recognise blockchain’s potential benefits for transaction transparency, verifiable records, intellectual property protection, and secure payments, but adoption is constrained by technical complexity, financial constraints, limited digital and accounting capabilities, and perceived regulatory and reputational risks. Government initiatives are seen as important for legitimacy yet insufficient without concrete guidance, capacity-building, and financial support. The study extends TAM–DOI applications to blockchain-enabled accounting in creative MSMEs and highlights the need for sequenced, ecosystem-based interventions to translate blockchain’s technical promise into accessible, ESG- and SDG-oriented accounting solutions in the creative economy. Grounded in the Theory of Planned Behavior, this study explores how sustainable marketing shapes consumer attitudes, brand image, and brand trust, and their implications for sustainable purchasing behavior among micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) in Bali. This study also examines the role of local wisdom as a moderating variable in the relationship between sustainable marketing and these three constructs. Using a quantitative approach with SEM-PLS analysis, this study involved 288 respondents who were local consumers of sustainable MSME products. Empirical data were collected through a Google Form-based questionnaire and analyzed using SmartPLS4. The results show that sustainable marketing has a significant effect on attitude, brand image, and brand trust. These three variables are proven to be strong drivers in increasing purchasing decisions for sustainable products. Furthermore, local wisdom does not moderate the relationship between sustainable marketing and attitude, but negatively moderates its relationships with brand image and brand trust, suggesting that culturally rooted consumers apply more critical evaluations to sustainable marketing efforts. These findings highlight the importance of integrating local wisdom authentically into sustainable marketing to strengthen consumer attitudes, brand image, and brand trust. The study contributes to sustainable marketing and consumer behavior theory and provides practical guidance for MSMEs in implementing sustainability strategies aligned with local wisdom. Full article
