Analysis of 3D-Printed Zirconia Implant Overdenture Bars

Dental implant components are typically fabricated using subtractive manufacturing, often involving metal materials that can be costly, inefficient, and time-consuming. This study explores the use of additive manufacturing (AM) with zirconia for dental implant overdenture bars, focusing on mechanical performance, stress distribution, and fit. Solid and lattice-structured bars were designed in Fusion 360 and produced using LithaCon 210 3Y-TZP zirconia (Lithoz GmbH, Vienna, Austria) on a CeraFab 8500 printer. Post-processing included cleaning, debinding, and sintering. A 3D-printed denture was also fabricated to evaluate fit. Thermography and optical imaging were used to assess adaptation. Custom fixtures were developed for flexural testing, and fracture loads were recorded to calculate stress distribution using finite element analysis (ANSYS R2025). The FEA model assumed isotropic, homogeneous, linear-elastic material behavior. Bars were torqued to 15 Ncm on implant analogs. The average fracture loads were 1.2240 kN (solid, n = 12) and 1.1132 kN (lattice, n = 5), with corresponding stress values of 147 MPa and 143 MPa, respectively. No statistically significant difference was observed (p = 0.578; α = 0.05). The fracture occurred near high-stress regions at fixture support points. All bars demonstrated a clinically acceptable fit on the model; however, further validation and clinical evaluation are still needed. Additively manufactured zirconia bars, including lattice structures, show promise as alternatives to conventional superstructures, potentially offering reduced material use and faster production without compromising mechanical performance. Background: The growing complexity of production processes in the metal–mechanical industry demands ever more effective strategies for managing machine and equipment maintenance, as unexpected failures can incur high operational costs and compromise productivity by interrupting workflows and delaying deliveries. However, few studies have combined end-to-end data analytics and data mining methods to proactively predict and mitigate such failures. This study aims to develop and validate a comprehensive framework combining data analytics and data mining to prevent machine failures and support decision-making in a metal–mechanical manufacturing environment. Methods: First, exploratory data analytics were performed on the sensor and logistics data to identify significant relationships and trends between variables. Next, a preprocessing pipeline including data cleaning, data transformation, feature selection, and resampling was applied. Finally, a decision tree model was trained to identify conditions prone to failures, enabling not only predictions but also the explicit representation of knowledge in the form of decision rules. Results: The outstanding performance of the decision tree (82.1% accuracy and a Kappa index of 78.5%), which was modeled from preprocessed data and the insights produced by data analytics, demonstrates its ability to generate reliable rules for predicting failures to support decision-making. The implementation of the proposed framework enables the optimization of predictive maintenance strategies, effectively reducing unplanned downtimes and enhancing the reliability of production processes in the metal–mechanical industry. Background: Thallium is a metal that is ubiquitous in our natural environment. Despite its potential for high toxicity, thallium is understudied and not regulated in food. The California Department of Public Health was alerted to a household cluster of elevated urine thallium levels noted among a mother (peak 5.6 µg/g creatinine; adult reference: ≤0.4 µg/g creatinine) and her three young children (peak 10.5 µg/g creatinine; child reference: ≤0.8 µg/g creatinine). Objectives: This case report identifies questions raised after a public health investigation linked a household’s thallium exposure to a commercially available food product. We provide an overview of the public health investigation. We then explore concerns, such as gaps in toxicological data and limited surveillance of thallium in the food supply, which make management of individual and population exposure risks challenging. Methods: We highlight findings from a cross-agency investigation, including a household exposure survey, sampling of possible environmental and dietary exposures (ICP-MS analysis measured thallium in kale chips at 1.98 mg/kg and 2.15 mg/kg), and monitoring of symptoms and urine thallium levels after the source was removed. We use regulatory and research findings to describe the challenges and opportunities in characterizing the scale of thallium in our food supply and effects of dietary exposures on health. Discussion: Thallium can bioaccumulate in our food system, particularly in brassica vegetables like kale. Thallium concentration in foods can also be affected by manufacturing processes, such as dehydration. We have limited surveillance data nationally regarding this metal in our food supply. Dietary reviews internationally show increased thallium intake in toddlers. Limited information is available about low-dose or chronic exposures, particularly among children, although emerging evidence shows that there might be risks associated at lower levels than previously thought. Improved toxicological studies are needed to guide reference doses and food safety standards. Promising action towards enhanced monitoring of thallium is being pursued by food safety agencies internationally, and research is underway to deepen our understanding of thallium toxicity. Polyetheretherketone (PEEK) is a semi-crystalline thermoplastic polymer which, due to its very high mechanical properties and high chemical resistance, has found application in the automotive, aerospace, chemical, food and medical (biomedical engineering) industries. Owing to the use of additive technologies, particularly the Fused Filament Fabrication (FFF) method, this material is the most widely used plastic to produce skull reconstruction implants, parts of dental implants and orthopedic implants, including spinal, knee and hip implants. PEEK enables the creation of personalized implants, which not only have greater elasticity compared to implants made of metal alloys but also resemble the physical properties of the cortical layer of human bone in terms of their mechanical properties. Therefore, the aim of this article is to characterize polyether ether ketone as an alternative material used in the manufacturing of implants in orthopedics and dentistry. Full article

Rapid-Optimized Process Parameters of 1080 Carbon Steel Additively Manufactured via Laser Powder Bed Fusion on High-Throughput Mechanical Property Testing

To ensure the sustainability of alloy-based strategies, both compositional design and processing routes must be simplified. Metal additive manufacturing (AM), with its exceptionally rapid, non-equilibrium solidification, offers a unique platform to produce tailored microstructures in simple alloys that deliver superior mechanical properties. In this study, we employ laser powder bed fusion (LPBF) to fabricate 1080 plain carbon steel, a binary alloy comprising only iron and carbon. Deviating from conventional process optimization focusing primarily on density, we optimize LPBF parameters for mechanical performance. We systematically varied key parameters (laser power and scan speed) to produce batches of tensile specimens, which were then evaluated on a high-throughput mechanical testing platform (HTP). Using response surface methodology (RSM), we developed predictive models correlating these parameters with yield strength (YS) and elongation. The RSM models identified optimal and suboptimal parameter sets. Specimens printed under the predicted optimal conditions achieved YS of 1543.5 MPa and elongation of 7.58%, closely matching RSM predictions (1595.3 MPa and 8.32%) with deviations of −3.25% and −8.89% for YS and elongation, respectively, thus validating model accuracy. Comprehensive microstructural characterization, including metallographic analysis and fracture surface examination, revealed the microstructural origins of performance differences and the underlying strengthening mechanisms. This methodology enables rapid evaluation and optimization of LPBF parameters for 1080 carbon steel and can be generalized as an efficient framework for robust LPBF process development. Full article

Tribological Performance of Direct Metal Laser Sintered 20MnCr5 Tool Steel Countersamples Designed for Sheet Metal Forming Applications

This article presents the results of the tribological performance of 20MnCr5 (1.7147) tool steel countersamples produced by Direct Metal Laser Sintering (DMLS), as a potential material for inserts or working layers of sheet metal forming tools. Tribological tests were performed using a roller-block tribotester. The samples were sheet metals made of materials with significantly different properties: Inconel 625, titanium-stabilised stainless steel 321, EN AW-6061 T0 aluminium alloy, and pure copper. The samples and countersamples were analysed in terms of their wear resistance, coefficient of friction (COF), changes in friction force during testing, and surface morphology after tribological contact under dry friction conditions. The tests were performed on DMLSed countersamples in the as-received state. The largest gain of countersample mass was observed for the 20MnCr5/EN AW-6061 T0 friction pair. The sample mass loss in this combination was also the largest, amounting to 19.96% of the initial mass. On the other hand, in the 20MnCr5/Inconel 625 friction pair, no significant changes in the mass of materials were recorded. For the Inconel 625 sample, a mass loss of 0.04% was observed. The basic wear mechanism of the samples was identified as abrasive wear. The highest friction forces were observed in the 20MnCr5/Cu friction pair (COF = 0.913) and 20MnCr5/EN AW-6061 T0 friction pair (COF = 1.234). The other two samples (Inconel 625, 321 steel) showed a very stable value of the friction force during the roller-block test resulting in a COF between 0.194 and 0.213. Based on the changes in friction force, COFs, and mass changes in friction pair components during wear tests, it can be concluded that potential tools in the form of inserts or working layers manufactured using 3D printing technology, the DMLS method, without additional surface treatment can be successfully used for forming sheets of 321 steel and Inconel 625. This paper showcases current developments in the use of carbon nanotube (CNT) and nanoparticle-based materials for electromagnetic radiation shielding. Electromagnetic radiation involves different types of radiation covering a wide spectrum of frequencies. Due to their good electrical conductivity, small diameter, and light weight, individual CNTs are good candidates for shielding radio and microwaves. CNTs can be organized into macroscale forms by dispersing them in polymers or by wrapping CNT strands into fabrics or yarn. Magnetic nanoparticles can also be incorporated into the CNT fabric to provide excellent shielding of electromagnetic waves. However, for shielding higher-frequency X-ray and gamma ray radiation, the situation is reversed. Carbon’s low atomic number means that CNTs alone are less effective than metals. Thus, different nanoparticles such as tungsten are added to the CNT materials to provide improved shielding of photons. The goal is to achieve a desired combination of light weight, flexibility, safety, and multifunctionality for use in shielding spacecraft, satellites, nuclear reactors, and medical garments and to support lunar colonization. Future research should investigate the effect of the size, shape, and configuration of nanoparticles on radiation shielding. Developing large-scale low-cost methods for the continuous manufacturing of lightweight multifunctional nanoparticle-based materials is also needed. Full article

High-precision 6D pose estimation for pick-and-place operations remains a critical problem for industrial robot arms in manufacturing. This study introduces an analytics-based solution for 6D pose estimation designed for a real-world industrial application: it enables the Staubli TX2-60L (manufactured by Stäubli International AG, Horgen, Switzerland) robot arm to pick up metal plates from various locations and place them into a precisely defined slot on a brake pad production line. The system uses a fixed eye-to-hand Intel RealSense D435 RGB-D camera (manufactured by Intel Corporation, Santa Clara, California, USA) to capture color and depth data. A robust software infrastructure developed in LabVIEW (ver.2019) integrated with the NI Vision (ver.2019) library processes the images through a series of steps, including particle filtering, equalization, and pattern matching, to determine the X-Y positions and Z-axis rotation of the object. The Z-position of the object is calculated from the camera’s intensity data, while the remaining X-Y rotation angles are determined using the angle-of-inclination analytics method. It is experimentally verified that the proposed analytical solution outperforms the hybrid-based method (YOLO-v8 combined with PnP/RANSAC algorithms). Experimental results across four distinct picking scenarios demonstrate the proposed solution’s superior accuracy, with position errors under 2 mm, orientation errors below 1°, and a perfect success rate in pick-and-place tasks. Directed Energy Deposition is an additive manufacturing subgroup that uses a laser beam to melt the wire or powder to create a melt pool. In the current study, a scientometric analysis has been carried out to analyze the contribution of countries, publication type analysis, distribution of publications over the years, keywords analysis, author analysis, cited journal, categories, institutes of publication, and report the practical implications. Firstly, the database was extracted from the Web of Science and then post-processed with CiteSpace 6.2.R4 and VOSviewer 1.6.20 software. Afterward, the associated results had been extracted and reported. It was found that China is the leader according to publication, followed by the USA and Germany, which mostly published their achievements in article and proceeding paper formats, which are increasing annually. According to the keywords, additive manufacturing, Laser Metal Deposition, and fabrication are the most commonly used. Based on the CiteSapce and VOSviewer results, Lin, Xin and Huang, Weidong are the authors with the highest publication rates. In addition, Additive Manufacturing, Materials & Design, and Materials Science and Engineering: A are the most cited journals, and regarding the categories, materials science, multidisciplinary, applied physics, and manufacturing engineering are the most commonly used DED processes. Northwestern Polytechnical University, Fraunhofer Gesellschaft, and the United States Department of Energy (DOE) have performed the most research in the field of DED. Full article

Although cemented carbides have been manufactured by the powder metallurgy (P/M) technology for over a century now, systematic developmental efforts are still underway. In the present study, tool life improvements in metal grooving applications are the key objective. Four PVD-coated cemented carbides compositions, dedicated to groove steel, stainless steel, cast iron, and aluminium alloys, have been newly designed, along with their manufacturing conditions. Physical, mechanical and chemical characteristics—such as sintered density, modulus of elasticity, hardness, fracture toughness, WC grain size, and the chemical composition of the substrate material, as well as the chemical composition, microhardness, structure, and thickness of the coatings—have been studied. A series of grooving tests have also been conducted to assess whether modifications to the thus far marketed tool materials, tool geometries, and coatings can improve cutting performance. In order to compare the laboratory and application properties of the investigated materials with currently produced by reputable companies, commercial inserts have also been tested. The experimental results obtained indicate that the newly developed grooving inserts exhibit excellent microstructural characteristics, high hardness, fracture toughness, and wear resistance and that they show slightly longer tool life compared to the commercial ones. Titanium–aluminum–vanadium (Ti6Al4V) is a material chosen for spine, orthopedic, and dental implants due to its combination of desirable mechanical and biological properties. Lasers have been used to modify metal surfaces, enabling the generation of a surface on Ti6Al4V with distinct micro- and nano-scale structures. Studies indicate that topography with micro/nano features of osteoclast resorption pits causes bone marrow stromal cells (MSCs) and osteoprogenitor cells to favor differentiation into an osteoblastic phenotype. This study examined whether the biological response of human MSCs to Ti6Al4V surfaces is sensitive to laser treatment-controlled micro/nano-topography. First, 15 mm diameter Ti6Al4V discs (Spine Wave Inc., Shelton, CT, USA) were either machined (M) or additively manufactured (AM). Surface treatments included no laser treatment (NT), nanosecond laser (Ns), femtosecond laser (Fs), or nanosecond followed by femtosecond laser (Ns+Fs). Surface wettability, roughness, and surface chemistry were determined using sessile drop contact angle, laser confocal microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Human MSCs were cultured in growth media on tissue culture polystyrene (TCPS) or test surfaces. On day 7, the levels of osteocalcin (OCN), osteopontin (OPN), osteoprotegerin (OPG), and vascular endothelial growth factor 165 (VEGF) in the conditioned media were measured. M NT, Fs, and Ns+Fs surfaces were hydrophilic; Ns was hydrophobic. AM NT and Fs surfaces were hydrophilic; AM Ns and Ns+Fs were hydrophobic. Roughness (Sa and Sz) increased after Ns and Ns+Fs treatment for both M and AM disks. All surfaces primarily consisted of oxygen, titanium, and carbon; Fs had increased levels of aluminum for both M and AM. SEM images showed that M NT discs had a smooth surface, whereas AM surfaces appeared rough at a higher magnification. Fs surfaces had a similar morphology to their respective NT disc at low magnification, but higher magnification revealed nano-scale bumps not seen on NT surfaces. AM Fs surfaces also had regular interval ridges that were not seen on non-femto laser-ablated surfaces. Surface roughness was increased on M and AM Ns and Ns+Fs disks compared to NT and Fs disks. OCN was enhanced, and DNA was reduced on Ns and Ns+Fs, with no difference between them. OPN, OPG, and VEGF levels for laser-treated M surfaces were unchanged compared to NT, apart from an increase in OPG on Fs. MSCs grown on AM Ns and Ns+Fs surfaces had increased levels of OCN per DNA. These results indicate that MSCs cultured on AM Ns and AM Ns+Fs surfaces, which exhibited unique roughness at the microscale and nanoscale, had enhanced differentiation to an osteoblastic phenotype. The laser treatments of the surface mediated this enhancement of MSC differentiation and warrant further clinical investigation. Full article

The conventional manufacturing of refractory complex concentrated alloys (RCCAs) for high-temperature applications is complicated, particularly when material costs and high melting points of the materials processed are considered. Additive manufacturing (AM) could provide an effective alternative. However, the extreme temperatures involved represent significant challenges for manufacturing defect-free alloys using this approach. To address this issue, we investigated the preparation of a CrNbTiZr quaternary complex concentrated alloy from an equimolar blend of elemental powders using commercially available powder-blown L-DED technology. Initially, the alloys exhibited some defects owing to the internal stress caused by the temperature gradients. This was subsequently resolved by optimizing the deposition strategy. SEM, XRD and EDS were used to analyze the alloy in the as-deposited condition, revealing a BCC phase and a secondary Laves phase. Furthermore, Vickers hardness testing demonstrated a correlation between the hardness and the volume fraction of the Laves phase. Finally, successfully performed compression tests confirmed that the prepared material exhibits high-temperature strength and therefore is promising for high-temperature application under extreme conditions. The present research features an experimental comparative design and the objective of this work was to determine the susceptibility to microbiological contamination in fatty acid methyl esters (FAMEs) and the FAME–water interface of residual and refined lard, large volume simulating storage conditions as fuel supply chain, and to identify the microorganisms developed. The plates were seeded according to ASTM E-1259 and the instructions provided by the manufacturer of the Bushnell Haas agar. Microbiological growth was observed at the FAME–water interface of FAME obtained from residual lard. Using the MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry technique, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Streptomyces violaceoruber bacteria were identified in the residual lard FAMEs, with the latter being previously reported in FAMEs. The implications of microorganism development on the physicochemical quality of FAMEs are significant, as it leads to an increase in the acid index, which may negatively impact metals by inducing corrosion. The refined lard FAMEs did not show any development of microorganisms. The present research concluded that residual lard tends to be more prone to microbiological attack if the conditions of water and temperature affect microbial growth. The findings will contribute to the knowledge base for a safer introduction of FAMEs into the biofuel matrix. Full article

This narrative review explores the role of additive manufacturing (AM) technologies in the production of dental implants, focusing on materials and key AM methods. The study discusses several materials used in implant fabrication, including porous titanium, trabecular tantalum, zirconium dioxide, polymers, and composite materials. These materials are evaluated for their mechanical properties, biocompatibility, and suitability for AM processes. Additionally, the review examines the main AM technologies used in dental implant production, such as selective laser melting (SLM), electron beam melting (EBM), stereolithography (SLA), selective laser sintering (SLS), and direct metal laser sintering (DMLS). These technologies are compared based on their accuracy, material limitations, customization potential, and applicability in dental practice. The final section presents a data source analysis of the Web of Science and Scopus databases, based on keyword searches. The analysis evaluates the research trends using three criteria: publication category, document type, and year of publication. This provides an insight into the evolution and current trends in the field of additive manufacturing for dental implants. The findings highlight the growing importance of AM technologies in producing customized and efficient dental implants. Full article
