Wind power has gained attention as a vital renewable energy source capable of reducing emissions and serving as an effective alternative to fossil fuels. Floating wind farms could significantly enhance the energy capacities of Mediterranean countries. However, location selection for offshore wind farms (OWFs) is a challenge for renewable energy policy and marine spatial planning (MSP). To address these issues, this study considers the marine space of Greece to propose a GIS-based multi-criteria decision-making (MCDM) framework employing the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) to identify suitable sites for OWFs. The approach assesses 19 exclusion criteria encompassing legislative, environmental, safety, and technical constraints to determine the eligible areas. Subsequently, 10 evaluation criteria are weighted to determine the selected areas’ level of suitability. The study considers baseline conditions (1981–2010) and future climate scenarios based on RCP 4.5 and RCP 8.5 for two horizons (2011–2040 and 2041–2070), integrating projected wind velocities and sea level rise to evaluate potential shifts in suitable areas. Results indicate the central and southeastern Aegean Sea as the most suitable areas for OWF deployment. Climate projections indicate a modest increase in suitable areas. Multi-vessel formation shipping demonstrates significant potential for enhancing maritime transportation efficiency and economy. However, existing route planning systems inadequately address the unique challenges of formations, where traditional methods fail to integrate global optimality, local dynamic obstacle avoidance, and formation coordination into a cohesive system. Global planning often neglects multi-ship collaborative constraints, while local methods disregard vessel maneuvering characteristics and formation stability. This paper proposes GLFM, a three-layer hierarchical framework (global optimization–local adjustment-formation collaboration module) for intelligent route planning of transport ship formations. GLFM integrates an improved multi-objective A* algorithm for global path optimization under dynamic meteorological and oceanographic (METOC) conditions and International Maritime Organization (IMO) safety regulations, with an enhanced Artificial Potential Field (APF) method incorporating ship safety domains for dynamic local obstacle avoidance. Formation, structural stability, and coordination are achieved through an improved leader–follower approach. Simulation results demonstrate that GLFM-generated trajectories significantly outperform conventional routes, reducing average risk level by 38.46% and voyage duration by 12.15%, while maintaining zero speed and period violation rates. Effective obstacle avoidance is achieved, with the leader vessel navigating optimized global waypoints and followers maintaining formation structure. The GLFM framework successfully balances global optimality with local responsiveness, enhances formation transportation efficiency and safety, and provides a comprehensive solution for intelligent route optimization in multi-constrained marine convoy operations. Wireless power transfer (WPT) systems for autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs) are gaining traction in marine exploration due to their operational convenience, safety, and flexibility. Nevertheless, disturbances from ocean currents and marine organisms frequently induce rotational, axial, and air-gap misalignments, significantly degrading the output power stability. To mitigate this issue, this paper proposes a novel reconfigurable WPT system utilizing coaxial antipodal dual DD (CAD-DD) coils, which strategically switches between a detuned S-LCC topology and a detuned S-S topology at a fixed operating frequency. By characterizing the output power versus the coupling coefficient (P-k) profiles under both reconfiguration modes, a parameter design methodology is developed to ensure stable power delivery across wide coupling variations. Experimental validation using a 1.2 kW AUV charging prototype demonstrates remarkable tolerance to misalignment: ±30° rotation, ±120 mm axial displacement, and 20–50 mm air-gap variation. Within this range, the output power fluctuation is confined to within 5%, while the system efficiency exceeds 85% consistently, peaking at 91.56%. Full article

The widespread adoption of liquefied natural gas (LNG) as a marine fuel has driven the development of LNG bunkering operations in global ports. Major international hubs, such as Shenzhen Port, have implemented ship-to-ship (STS) bunkering practices. However, this process entails unique safety risks, particularly hazards associated with vapor cloud dispersion caused by bunkering hose releases. This study employs the Phast software developed by DNV to systematically simulate LNG release scenarios during STS operations, integrating real-world meteorological data and storage conditions. The dynamic effects of transfer flow rates, release heights, and release directions on vapor cloud dispersion are quantitatively analyzed under daytime and nighttime conditions. The results demonstrate that transfer flow rate significantly regulates dispersion range, with recommendations to limit the rate below 1500 m3/h and prioritize daytime operations to mitigate risks. Release heights exceeding 10 m significantly amplify dispersion effects, particularly at night (nighttime dispersion area at a height of 20 m is 3.5 times larger than during the daytime). Optimizing release direction effectively suppresses dispersion, with vertically downward releases exhibiting minimal impact. Horizontal releases require avoidance of downwind alignment, and daytime operations are prioritized to reduce lateral dispersion risks. Full article

Floating solar technology has gained significant attention as part of the global expansion of renewable energy due to its potential for installation in underutilized water bodies. Several countries, including the Netherlands, have initiated efforts to extend this technology from inland freshwater applications to open offshore environments, particularly within offshore wind farm areas. This development is motivated by the synergistic benefits of increasing site energy density and leveraging the existing offshore grid infrastructure. The deployment of offshore floating photovoltaic (OFPV) systems involves assembling multiple modular units in a marine environment, introducing operational risks that may give rise to safety concerns. To mitigate these risks, weather windows must be considered prior to the task execution to ensure continuity between weather-sensitive activities, which can also lead to additional time delays and increased costs. Consequently, optimizing marine logistics becomes crucial to achieving the cost reductions necessary for making OFPV technology economically viable. This study employs a simulation-based approach to estimate the installation duration of a 5 MWp OFPV plant at a Dutch offshore wind farm site, started in different months and under three distinct risk management scenarios. Based on 20 years of hindcast wave data, the results reveal the impacts of campaign start months and risk management policies on installation duration. Across all the scenarios, the installation duration during the autumn and winter period is 160% longer than the one in the spring and summer period. The average installation durations, based on results from 12 campaign start months, are 70, 80, and 130 days for the three risk management policies analyzed. The result variation highlights the additional time required to mitigate operational risks arising from potential discontinuity between highly interdependent tasks (e.g., offshore platform assembly and mooring). Additionally, it is found that the weather-induced delays are mainly associated with the campaigns of pre-laying anchors and platform and mooring line installation compared with the other campaigns. In conclusion, this study presents a logistics modeling methodology for OFPV systems, demonstrated through a representative case study based on a state-of-the-art truss-type design. The primary contribution lies in providing a framework to quantify the performance of OFPV installation strategies at an early design stage. The findings of this case study further highlight that marine installation logistics are highly sensitive to local marine conditions and the chosen installation strategy, and should be integrated early in the OFPV design process to help reduce the levelized cost of electricity. With the rapid advancement of maritime sports, the integration of auxiliary unmanned surface vehicles (USVs) has emerged as a promising solution to enhance the efficiency and safety of maritime education, particularly in tasks such as buoy deployment and escort operations. This paper presents a novel high-precision trajectory tracking control algorithm designed to ensure stable navigation of the USVs along predefined competition boundaries, thereby facilitating the reliable execution of buoy placement and escort missions. First, the paper proposes an improved adaptive fractional-order nonsingular fast terminal sliding mode control (AFONFTSMC) algorithm to achieve precise trajectory tracking of the reference path. To address the challenges posed by unknown environmental disturbances and unmodeled dynamics in marine environments, a nonlinear lumped disturbance observer (NLDO) with exponential convergence properties is proposed, ensuring robust and continuous navigation performance. Additionally, an artificial potential field (APF) method is integrated to dynamically mitigate collision risks from both static and dynamic obstacles during trajectory tracking. The efficacy and practical applicability of the proposed control framework are rigorously validated through comprehensive numerical simulations. Experimental results demonstrate that the developed algorithm achieves superior trajectory tracking accuracy under complex sea conditions, thereby offering a reliable and efficient solution for maritime sports education and related applications. Pipeline leaks can pollute the marine environment and, in severe cases, cause safety incidents, endangering human lives and property. Regular integrity inspections of subsea pipelines are critical to prevent corrosion-related leaks. This study develops a magnetic flux leakage (MFL)-based pig for detecting corrosion in subsea pipelines. Using a three-dimensional finite element model, this study analyzes the effects of defect geometry, lift-off distance, and operating speed on MFL signals. It proposes a defect estimation method based on axial peak-to-valley values and radial peak spacing, with inversion accuracy validated against simulation results. This study establishes a theoretical and practical framework for subsea pipeline integrity management, providing an effective solution for corrosion monitoring. Full article

Hydrogen is a potential key component of a carbon-neutral energy carrier and an input to marine industrial processes. This study examines the consequences of coupled hydrogen release and marine environmental factors during floating photovoltaic hydrogen production (FPHP) system failures. A validated three-dimensional numerical model of FPHP comprehensively characterizes hydrogen leakage dynamics under varied rupture diameters (25, 50, 100 mm), transient release duration, dispersion patterns, and wind intensity effects (0–20 m/s sea-level velocities) on hydrogen–air vapor clouds. FLACS-generated data establish the concentration–dispersion distance relationship, with numerical validation confirming predictive accuracy for hydrogen storage tank failures. The results indicate that the wind velocity and rupture size significantly influence the explosion risk; 100 mm ruptures elevate the explosion risk, producing vapor clouds that are 40–65% larger than 25 mm and 50 mm cases. Meanwhile, increased wind velocities (>10 m/s) accelerate hydrogen dilution, reducing the high-concentration cloud volume by 70–84%. Hydrogen jet orientation governs the spatial overpressure distribution in unconfined spaces, leading to considerable shockwave consequence variability. Photovoltaic modules and inverters of FPHP demonstrate maximum vulnerability to overpressure effects; these key findings can be used in the design of offshore platform safety. This study reveals fundamental accident characteristics for FPHP reliability assessment and provides critical insights for safety reinforcement strategies in maritime hydrogen applications. With advancements in radar sensors, communications, and computer technologies, alongside an increasing number of ground observation tasks, Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) remote sensing is transitioning from being theory and technology-driven to being application-demand-driven. Since the late 1960s, Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (InSAR) theories and techniques have continued to develop. They have been applied significantly in various fields, such as in the generation of global topography maps, monitoring of ground deformation, marine observations, and disaster reduction efforts. This article classifies InSAR into repeated-pass interference and single-pass interference. Repeated-pass interference mainly includes D-InSAR, PS-InSAR and SBAS-InSAR. Single-pass interference mainly includes CT-InSAR and AT-InSAR. Recently, China has made significant progress in the field of SAR satellite development, successfully launching several satellites equipped with interferometric measurement capabilities. These advancements have driven the evolution of spaceborne InSAR systems from single-frequency to multi-frequency, from low Earth orbit to higher orbits, and from single-platform to multi-platform configurations. These advancements have supported high precision and high-temporal-resolution land observation, and promoted the broader application of InSAR technology in disaster early warning, ecological monitoring, and infrastructure safety. To improve environmental sustainability and operational safety in maritime industries, the development of efficient methods for removing biofouling from submerged surfaces is critical. This study investigates the erosion mechanisms of cavitation jets as a non-contact, high-efficiency method for detaching marine organisms, including bacteria and larvae, from ship hulls and underwater infrastructure. Through erosion experiments on coated specimens, variations in jet morphology, and flow visualization using the Schlieren method, we examined how factors such as jet incident angle and nozzle configuration influence removal performance. The results reveal that erosion occurs not only at the direct jet impact zone but also in regions where cavitation bubbles exhibit intense motion, driven by pressure fluctuations and shock waves. Notably, single-hole jets with longer potential cores produced more concentrated erosion, while multi-jet interference enhanced bubble activity. These findings underscore the importance of understanding bubble distribution dynamics in the flow field and provide insight into optimizing cavitation jet configurations to expand the effective cleaning area while minimizing material damage. This study contributes to advancing biofouling removal technologies that promote safer and more sustainable maritime operations. Full article

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) has emerged as a global health crisis, with methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) representing one of the most clinically significant multidrug-resistant pathogens. In this study, three structurally unique anthracycline derivatives—keto-ester (1), 4-deoxy-ε-pyrromycinone (2), and misamycin (3)—were first isolated and characterized from the fermentation broth of the marine-derived Streptomyces tauricus NBUD24. These compounds exhibited notable antibacterial efficacy against MRSA, with minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) ranging from 16 to 32 µg/mL. Cytotoxicity assays confirmed their safety profile at therapeutic concentrations. The biofilm formation assay demonstrated that 4-deoxy-ε-pyrromycinone inhibited biofilm formation of MRSA ATCC43300, with an inhibition rate of 64.4%. Investigations of antibacterial mechanisms revealed that these compounds exert antibacterial effects primarily through disruption of bacterial cell wall integrity and destruction of DNA structure. These findings underscore the potential of marine-derived microbial metabolites as promising scaffolds for developing next-generation antimicrobial candidates to combat drug-resistant infections. This study evaluates the risk assessment and hazard identification of hydrothermal liquefaction (HTL)-derived bio-oil from the MARINES project, which converts military organic waste into fuel. The high oxygen content (35–50 wt%), acidic pH (2–4), and viscosity (10–1000 cP) of bio-oils pose unique challenges, including oxidative polymerization, corrosion, and micro-explosions during combustion. Key hazards include storage instability, particulate emissions (20–30% higher than diesel), and aquatic toxicity (LC50 < 10 mg/L for phenolics). Mitigation strategies such as inert gas blanketing, preheating, and spill containment are proposed. While offering renewable fuel potential, HTL bio-oil demands rigorous safety protocols for military/industrial deployment, warranting further experimental validation. Full article

Despite navigation advancements in enhanced sensor utilization and increased focus on maritime training and education, most marine accidents still involve collisions with high human involvement. Furthermore, navigators’ knowledge and application of the most often misunderstood Rule 10 Traffic Separation Schemes (TSS) according to the Convention on the International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea (COLREG) represents the first focus in this study. To provide insight into the level of understanding and knowledge regarding COLREG Rule 10, a customized, worldwide survey has been created and disseminated among marine industry professionals. The survey results reveal a notable knowledge gap in Rule 10, where we initially assumed that more than half of the respondents know COLREG regulations well. According to the probability calculation and chi-square test results, all three categories (OOW, Master, and others) have significant rule misunderstanding. In response to the COLREG misunderstanding, together with the increasing density of maritime traffic, the implementation of Decision Support Systems (DSS) in navigation has become crucial for ensuring compliance with regulatory frameworks and enhancing navigational safety in general. This study presents a structural approach to vessel prioritization and decision-making within a DSS framework, focusing on the classification and response of the own vessel (OV) to bow-crossing scenarios within the TSS. Through the real-time integration of AIS navigational status data, the proposed DSS Architecture offers a structured, rule-compliant architecture to enhance navigational safety and the decision-making process within the TSS. Furthermore, implementing a Fall-Back Strategy (FBS) represents the key innovation factor, which ensures system resilience by directing operator response if opposing vessels disobey COLREG rules. Based on the vessel’s dynamic context and COLREG hierarchy, the proposed DSS Architecture identifies and informs the navigator regarding stand-on or give-way obligations among vessels. Full article

Algal and cyanobacterial blooms are anticipated to increase in frequency, duration, and geographic extent as a result of environmental changes, including climate warming, elevated nutrient concentrations, and increased runoff in both marine and freshwater ecosystems. The eutrophication of aquatic environments represents a substantial threat to human health. As eutrophication progresses, airborne algae and cyanobacteria, particularly harmful genera originating from aquatic environments, are released into the atmosphere and may pose potential risks to human health. Furthermore, respiratory distress has been documented in individuals exposed to aerosols containing harmful algal bloom (HAB) toxins. This review investigates the generation of aerosolised harmful algal blooms, their responses to environmental factors, and their associated health risks. Evidence suggests that airborne algae, cyanobacteria, and their toxins are widespread. When these are aerosolised into micrometre-sized particles, they become susceptible to atmospheric processing, which may degrade the HAB toxins and produce byproducts with differing potencies compared to the parent compounds. Inhalation of aerosolised HAB toxins, especially when combined with co-morbid factors such as exposure to air pollutants, could present a significant health risk to a considerable proportion of the global population. A more comprehensive understanding of the chemical transformations of these toxins and the composition of harmful algal and cyanobacterial communities can improve public safety. Full article

The non-metallic armored optoelectronic cable (NAOC) serves as a critical component in deep-sea scientific winch systems. Due to its low density and excellent corrosion resistance, it has been widely adopted in marine exploration. However, as the operational water depth increases, the NAOC is subjected to multi-layer winding on the drum, resulting in a cumulative temperature rise that can severely impair insulation performance and compromise the safety of deep-sea operations. To address this issue, this paper conducts temperature rise experiments on NAOCs using a distributed temperature sensing test rig to investigate the effects of the number of winding layers and current amplitude on their temperature rise characteristics. Based on the experimental results, an electromagnetic thermal multi-physics field coupling simulation model is established to further examine the influence of these factors on the maximum operation time of the NAOC. Finally, a multi-variable predictive model for maximum operation time is developed, incorporating current amplitude, the number of winding layers, and ambient temperature, with a fitting accuracy of 97.92%. This research provides theoretical and technical support for ensuring the safety of deep-sea scientific operations and improving the reliability of deep-sea equipment. Full article
