This review provides a comprehensive synthesis of phosphorus (P) dynamics relevant to salmonid aquaculture, with a particular focus on Atlantic salmon. It explores the global P cycle, the chemical forms of P in aquatic systems, and the implications of P sourcing, processing, and availability in aquafeeds. The review distinguishes between digestibility and availability of P, summarizes requirement studies, and evaluates the contribution of marine, animal, vegetable, and inorganic sources to dietary P. It also examines how aquaculture system design, particularly recirculating aquaculture systems (RASs), influences P accumulation and emissions. By integrating nutritional, physiological, and environmental perspectives, this review offers a uniquely holistic view of P efficiency and sustainability in salmonid aquaculture. Full article

To reduce carbon emissions in the shipping industry, the energy management problem of the ship-integrated energy system (S-IES) is analyzed in this paper. Firstly, a marine environmental risk field model is constructed to quantify the degree of hazard when designing the sailing route. Meanwhile, an energy management model that considers both economic and environmental benefits is developed to enhance the penetration rate of renewable resources. Subsequently, a distributed energy management algorithm based on finite-time consensus theory is proposed to ensure a rapid and accurate response to load demand. Moreover, a mathematical analysis is provided to demonstrate the algorithm’s effectiveness. Finally, the sea area between Singapore Port (Singapore) and Penang Port (Malaysia) is chosen as the simulation environment. The experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of energy management for the S-IES. Full article

Wind power has gained attention as a vital renewable energy source capable of reducing emissions and serving as an effective alternative to fossil fuels. Floating wind farms could significantly enhance the energy capacities of Mediterranean countries. However, location selection for offshore wind farms (OWFs) is a challenge for renewable energy policy and marine spatial planning (MSP). To address these issues, this study considers the marine space of Greece to propose a GIS-based multi-criteria decision-making (MCDM) framework employing the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) to identify suitable sites for OWFs. The approach assesses 19 exclusion criteria encompassing legislative, environmental, safety, and technical constraints to determine the eligible areas. Subsequently, 10 evaluation criteria are weighted to determine the selected areas’ level of suitability. The study considers baseline conditions (1981–2010) and future climate scenarios based on RCP 4.5 and RCP 8.5 for two horizons (2011–2040 and 2041–2070), integrating projected wind velocities and sea level rise to evaluate potential shifts in suitable areas. Results indicate the central and southeastern Aegean Sea as the most suitable areas for OWF deployment. Climate projections indicate a modest increase in suitable areas. The findings serve as input for climate-resilient MSP seeking to promote sustainable energy development. Full article

The maritime sector is undergoing rapid transformation, driven by increasingly stringent international regulations targeting air pollution. While newly built vessels integrate advanced technologies for compliance, the global fleet averages 21.8 years of age and must meet emission requirements through retrofitting or operational changes. This study evaluates, at environmental and economic levels, two key sulphur abatement strategies for a 1998-built cruise vessel nearing the end of its service life: (i) the installation of open-loop scrubbers with fuel enhancement devices, and (ii) a switch to marine diesel oil as main fuel. The analysis was based on real operational data from a cruise vessel. For the environmental assessment, a Tier III hybrid emissions model was used. The results show that scrubbers reduce SOx emissions by approximately 97% but increase fuel consumption by 3.6%, raising both CO2 and NOx emissions, while particulate matter decreases by only 6.7%. In contrast, switching to MDO achieves over 99% SOx reduction, an 89% drop in particulate matter, and a nearly 5% reduction in CO2 emissions. At an economic level, it was found that, despite a CAPEX of nearly USD 1.9 million, scrubber installation provides an average annual net saving exceeding USD 8.2 million. From the deterministic and probabilistic analyses performed, including Monte Carlo simulations under various fuel price correlation scenarios, scrubber installation consistently shows high profitability, with NPVs surpassing USD 70 million and payback periods under four months. This study evaluates the risk assessment and hazard identification of hydrothermal liquefaction (HTL)-derived bio-oil from the MARINES project, which converts military organic waste into fuel. The high oxygen content (35–50 wt%), acidic pH (2–4), and viscosity (10–1000 cP) of bio-oils pose unique challenges, including oxidative polymerization, corrosion, and micro-explosions during combustion. Key hazards include storage instability, particulate emissions (20–30% higher than diesel), and aquatic toxicity (LC50 < 10 mg/L for phenolics). Mitigation strategies such as inert gas blanketing, preheating, and spill containment are proposed. While offering renewable fuel potential, HTL bio-oil demands rigorous safety protocols for military/industrial deployment, warranting further experimental validation. Full article

Marine biofouling significantly impacts the performance and longevity of polymer-based marine structures, particularly those designed for hydrodynamic applications such as Vortex-Induced Vibration suppression systems. Traditional antifouling solutions rely on copper-based multilayer coatings, which present challenges including mechanical vulnerability (e.g., chipping and scratching), high material and labor demands, and environmental concerns such as volatile organic compound emissions and copper leaching. Recent developments in material science have introduced an alternative system involving the direct incorporation of copper oxide (Cu2O) into high-density polyethylene (HDPE) during the molding process. This study conducts a comparative life cycle assessment (LCA) of two antifouling integration methods—System 1 (traditional coating-based) and System 2 (Cu2O-impregnated HDPE)—evaluating their environmental impact across production, application, use, and end-of-life stages. The functional unit used for this study was 1 square meter for a time period of five years. Using ISO 14040-compliant methodology and data from Ecoinvent and OpenLCA, three impact categories were assessed: global warming potential (GWP), cumulative energy demand (CED), and marine aquatic ecotoxicity Potential (MAETP). The results indicate that System 2 outperforms System 1 in GWP (4.42 vs. 5.65 kg CO2-eq), CED (75.3 vs. 91.0 MJ-eq), and MAETP (327,002 vs. 469,929 kg 1,4-DCB-eq) per functional unit over a five-year lifespan, indicating a 21.8%, 17.3%, and 30.4% reduction in the key impact factors, respectively. These results suggest that direct Cu2O incorporation offers a more environmentally sustainable and mechanically resilient antifouling strategy, supporting the potential of embedded antifouling systems to shift industry practices toward more sustainable marine infrastructure. The current research trends of production engineering are based on optimizing the machining process concerning human and environmental factors. High-performance materials, such as hardened steels, nickel-based alloys, fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) composites, and titanium alloys, are classified as hard-to-cut due to their ability to maintain strength at high operating temperatures. Due to these characteristics, such materials are employed in applications such as aerospace, marine, energy generation, and structural. The purpose of this article is to investigate the machinability of these alloys under various cutting conditions. The purpose of this article is to compare cryogenic cooling and cryogenic processing from the perspective of machinability and sustainability in the manufacturing process. Compared to conventional machining, hybrid techniques, which mix cryogenic and minimal quantity lubricant, led to significantly reduced cutting forces of 40–50%, cutting temperatures and surface finishes by approximately 20–30% and more than 40%, respectively. A carbon footprint is determined by several factors including power consumption, energy requirements, and carbon dioxide emissions. As a result of the cryogenic technology, the energy consumption, power consumption, and CO2 emissions were reduced by 40%, 28%, and 35%. Full article

Driven by stringent emission regulations, advanced combustion modes utilizing turbulent jet ignition technology are pivotal for enhancing the performance of marine low-speed natural gas dual-fuel engines. This review focuses on three novel combustion modes, yielding key conclusions: (1) Compared to the conventional DJCDC mode, the TJCDC mode exhibits a significantly higher swirl ratio and turbulence kinetic energy in the main chamber during initial combustion. This promotes natural gas jet development and combustion acceleration, leading to shorter ignition delay, reduced combustion duration, and a combustion center (CA50) positioned closer to the Top Dead Center (TDC), alongside higher peak cylinder pressure and a faster early heat release rate. Energetically, while TJCDC incurs higher heat transfer losses, it benefits from lower exhaust energy and irreversible exergy loss, indicating greater potential for useful work extraction, albeit with slightly higher indicated specific NOx emissions. (2) In the high-compression ratio TJCPC mode, the Liquid Pressurized Natural Gas (LPNG) injection parameters critically impact performance. Delaying the start of injection (SOI) or extending the injection duration degrades premixing uniformity and increases unburned methane (CH4) slip, with the duration effects showing a load dependency. Optimizing both the injection timing and duration is, therefore, essential for emission control. (3) Increasing the excess air ratio delays the combustion phasing in TJCPC (longer ignition delay, extended combustion duration, and retarded CA50). However, this shift positions the heat release more optimally relative to the TDC, resulting in significantly improved indicated thermal efficiency. This work provides a theoretical foundation for optimizing high-efficiency, low-emission combustion strategies in marine dual-fuel engines. Full article

Liquefied natural gas (LNG) is increasingly used as a marine fuel due to its capacity to significantly reduce emissions of particulate matter, sulfur oxides (SOx), and nitrogen oxides (NOx), compared to conventional fuels. In addition, LNG combustion produces less carbon dioxide (CO2) than conventional marine fuels, and the use of non-fossil LNG offers further potential for reducing greenhouse gas emissions. However, this benefit can be partially offset by methane slip—the release of unburned methane in engine exhaust—which has a much higher global warming potential than CO2. This study presents an experimental evaluation of methane emissions from a RoPax vessel powered by low-pressure dual-fuel four-stroke engines with a direct mechanical propulsion system. Methane slip was measured directly during onboard testing and combined with a year-long analysis of engine operation using an Engine Load Monitoring (ELM) method. The yearly average methane slip coefficient (Cslip) obtained was 1.57%, slightly lower than values reported in previous studies on cruise ships (1.7%), and significantly lower than the default values specified by the FuelEU (3.1%) Maritime regulation and IMO (3.5%) LCA guidelines. This result reflects the ship’s operational profile, characterized by long crossings at high and stable engine loads. This study provides results that could support more representative emission assessments and can contribute to ongoing regulatory discussions. Full article

Biogenic volatile organic compounds (BVOCs) are low-boiling-point compounds commonly synthesized by secondary metabolic pathways in plants. As key precursors of ozone (O3) and secondary organic aerosols (SOA), BVOCs play a critical role in ecosystem-atmosphere interactions. However, their emission from both marine and terrestrial ecosystems, as well as their association with climate and the environment, remain poorly characterized. In light of recent advances in BVOC research, including the establishment of emission inventories, identification of driving factors, and evaluation of ecological and environmental impacts, this study reviews the latest advancements in the field. The findings underscore that the carbon losses via BVOC emission should not be overlooked when estimating the terrestrial carbon balance. Additionally, more work needs to be conducted to quantify the emission factors of specific tree species and to establish links between BVOC emission and climate or environment change. This study contributes to a deeper understanding of vegetation ecology and its environmental functions. Full article

The promising development of hydrogen and fuel cell technologies has garnered increased attention in recent years, assuming a significant role in industrial applications and the decarbonisation of the shipping industry. Given that the shipping industry generates considerable greenhouse gas emissions, it is crucial and imperative to implement integrated solutions based on clean energy sources, thereby meeting the proposed climate objectives. This study presents the standard hydrogen production, storage, and transport methods and analysis technologies that use hydrogen fuel cells in marine and industrial applications. Technologies based on hydrogen fuel cells and hybrid systems will have an increased perspective of application in industry and maritime transport under the conditions of optimising technological models, developing the hydrogen industrial chain, and updating standards and regulations in the field. However, there are still many shortcomings. The paper’s main contribution is analysing the hydrogen industrial chain, presenting the progress and obstacles associated with the technologies used in industrial and marine applications based on hydrogen energy. This study identifies the optimal location for an offshore energy island to supply sustainable power to desalination plants along the Red Sea coast. As demand for clean energy in water production grows, integrating renewables into desalination systems becomes increasingly essential. A decision-making framework was developed to assess site feasibility based on renewable energy potential (solar, wind, and wave), marine traffic, site suitability, planned developments, and proximity to desalination facilities. Data was sourced from platforms such as Windguru and RETScreen, and spatial analysis was conducted using Inverse Distance Weighting (IDW) and Multi-Criteria Decision Analysis (MCDA). Results indicate that the central Red Sea region offers the most favorable conditions, combining high renewable resource availability with existing infrastructure. The estimated regional desalination energy demand of 2.1 million kW can be met using available renewable sources. Integrating these sources is expected to reduce local CO2 emissions by up to 43.17% and global desalination-related emissions by 9.5%. Spatial constraints for offshore installations were also identified, with land-based solar energy proposed as a complementary solution. The study underscores the need for further research into wave energy potential in the Red Sea, due to limited real-time data and the absence of a dedicated wave energy atlas. Full article

This study focuses on the development of high-performance composite cementitious materials for offshore engineering applications, addressing the critical challenges of durability, environmental degradation, and carbon emissions. By incorporating polycarboxylate superplasticizers (PCE) and combining fly ash (FA), ground granulated blast furnace slag (GGBS), and silica fume (SF) in various proportions, composite mortars were designed and evaluated. A series of laboratory tests were conducted to assess workability, mechanical properties, volume stability, and durability under simulated marine conditions. The results demonstrate that the optimized composite exhibits superior performance in terms of strength development, shrinkage control, and resistance to chloride penetration and freeze–thaw cycles. Microstructural analysis further reveals that the enhanced performance is attributed to the formation of additional calcium silicate hydrate (C–S–H) gel and a denser internal matrix resulting from secondary hydration. These findings suggest that the proposed material holds significant potential for enhancing the long-term durability and sustainability of marine infrastructure. Full article

Shale and coal in the transitional marine–continental facies of the Ordos Basin serve as unconventional natural gas reservoirs, with their pore structures controlling gas adsorption characteristics and occurrence states. To quantitatively characterize the pore structure features and differences between these two reservoirs, this study takes the Shanxi Formation shale and coal in the Daning–Jixian area on the eastern margin of the Ordos Basin as examples. Field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), high-pressure mercury intrusion, low-temperature N2 adsorption, and low-pressure CO2 adsorption experiments were employed to analyze and compare the full-scale pore structures of the shale and coal reservoirs. Combined with methane isothermal adsorption experiments, the gas adsorption capacity and its differences in these reservoirs were investigated. The results indicate that the average total organic carbon (TOC) content of shale is 2.66%, with well-developed organic pores, inorganic pores, and microfractures. Organic pores are the most common, typically occurring densely and in clusters. The average TOC content of coal is 74.22%, with organic gas pores being the dominant pore type, significantly larger in diameter than those in transitional marine–continental facies shale and marine shale. In coal, micropores contribute the most to pore volume, while mesopores and macropores contribute less. In shale, mesopores dominate, followed by micropores, with macropores being underdeveloped. Both coal and shale exhibit a high SSA primarily contributed by micropores, with organic matter serving as the material basis for micropore development. The methane adsorption capacity of coal is 8–29 times higher than that of shale. Coal contains abundant organic micropores, providing a large SSA and numerous adsorption sites for methane, facilitating gas adsorption and storage. This study comprehensively reveals the similarities and differences in pore structures between transitional marine–continental facies shale and coal reservoirs in the Ordos Basin at the microscale, providing a scientific basis for the precise evaluation and development of unconventional oil and gas resources. Evaluation of the Effect of Floating Treatment Wetlands Planted with Sesuvium portulacastrum on the Dynamics of Dissolved Inorganic Nitrogen, CO2, and N2O in Grouper Aquaculture Systems

Aquaculture expansion to meet global protein demand has intensified concerns over nutrient pollution and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. While floating treatment wetlands (FTWs) are proven for water quality improvement, their potential to mitigate GHG emissions in marine aquaculture remains poorly understood. This study quantitatively evaluated the dual capacity of Sesuvium portulacastrum FTWs to (a) regulate dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN) and (b) reduce CO2/N2O emissions in grouper aquaculture systems. DIN speciation (NH4+, NO2, NO3) and CO2/N2O fluxes of six controlled ponds (three FTW and three control) were monitored for 44 days. DIN in the FTW group was approximately 90 μmol/L lower than that in the control group, and the water in the plant group was more “oxidative” than that in the control group. The former groups were dominated by NO3, with lower dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) and N2O concentrations, whereas the latter were dominated by NH4+ during the first 20 days of the experiment and by NO2 at the end of the experiment, with higher DIC and N2O concentrations on average. Higher primary production may be the reason that the DIC concentration was lower in the plant group than in the control group, whereas efficient nitrification and uptake by plants reduced the availability of NH4+ in the plant group, thereby reducing the production of N2O. A comparison of the CO2 and N2O flux potentials in the plant group and control group revealed that, in the presence of FTWs, the CO2 and N2O emissions decreased by 14% and 36%, respectively. This showed that S. portulacastrum FTWs effectively couple DIN removal with GHG mitigation, offering a nature-based solution for sustainable aquaculture.
