Specialty crop industries generate heterogeneous knowledge across cultivation, pest and disease management, post-harvest handling, quality control, and marketing, yet this knowledge is often dispersed across technical documents, web resources, relational datasets, and expert experience. Taking the jujube (Ziziphus jujuba Mill.) industry as a case study, this study develops a reproducible ontology-constrained knowledge-engineering framework. A lifecycle-oriented domain ontology and a curated knowledge graph prototype were constructed from verified ontology-aligned records, while unstructured texts were used to evaluate prospective information-extraction components. Four BERT-based named entity recognition models were compared under leakage-controlled five-fold cross-validation, and versioned ontology-constrained trigger rules were evaluated under a gold-entity setting. The final ontology contained 457 RDF triples, 38 classes, 13 object properties, and 71 data properties, and logical consistency checks detected no inconsistent named classes. BERT-Softmax obtained the highest mean NER F1-score (0.328 ± 0.146) in this small corpus, but the fold variability does not support a general claim of superiority over CRF-based architectures. Under gold entities, the refined trigger rules achieved an F1-score of 0.683 ± 0.142; in a stricter diagnostic using automatically predicted fine-grained entities, end-to-end relation extraction declined to 0.035 ± 0.054. On a 93-question benchmark generated from verified graph triples, the rule-graph QA engine achieved a token-level F1-score of 0.973 and a tail-set exact accuracy of 98.9%, primarily reflecting relation mapping and graph retrieval correctness. A separate 20-question human-authored challenge audit found three partially supported questions and no fully supported question, illustrating the boundary beyond graph-grounded retrieval. The results provide case-specific, exploratory evidence that explicit ontology constraints can support reproducible knowledge organization and verifiable retrieval under limited domain data; they do not establish deployment-level or unrestricted agricultural QA performance. As a fruit with both medicinal and edible value, red jujube (Ziziphus jujuba Mill.) is abundant in polyphenols and other bioactive components, exhibiting potent antioxidant potential. However, fresh jujubes are highly susceptible to spoilage, while existing processed products suffer from low added value and severe homogenization, restricting the upgrading of the jujube deep-processing industry. In this study, a strain suitable for jujube juice fermentation was selected from six lactic acid bacteria (LAB) strains. Using single-factor tests and response surface methodology, the fermentation conditions of fermented red jujube juice (FRJJ) were optimized. Systematic analysis was performed on the dynamic evolution of physicochemical properties, color, flavor, and bioactive compounds throughout the fermentation process. Additionally, a C2C12 cell model subjected to H2O2-induced oxidative stress was employed to evaluate the cytoprotective effects and antioxidant activity of FRJJ. The results demonstrated that LAB fermentation increased superoxide dismutase activity and total phenolic content, while improving flavor and sensory quality. Furthermore, FRJJ effectively mitigated oxidative stress damage and enhanced cell viability by reducing intracellular reactive oxygen species levels and maintaining mitochondrial membrane potential. These findings offer a theoretical basis for the value-added utilization of jujube resources and the formulation of functional fermented beverages. Full article

Jujube wine production faces the technical challenge of excessive methanol formation due to the high pectin content of the raw material. This study systematically compared five pre-fermentation treatments (pectinase, chitosan, bentonite, gelatin, and diatomite) for their effects on the methanol content and overall quality of jujube wine, aiming to identify an adsorbent pretreatment strategy that effectively reduces methanol levels while preserving wine quality. Using pectinase treatment as a reference control (representing conventional industrial pectin degradation), the results showed that all adsorbent treatments reduced the pectin content in jujube juice, thereby influencing methanol generation in the fermented wine. Notably, chitosan pretreatment exhibited the most pronounced methanol reduction (113.35 mg/L), which was 59.20% lower than that of the pectinase reference group (277.65 mg/L), and remained far below the methanol limits stipulated by Chinese, EU, and OIV standards (≤400 mg/L). This effectiveness is attributed to the positively charged nature of chitosan, which efficiently removes negatively charged pectin through electrostatic adsorption, thereby blocking methanol formation at the source. Chitosan treatment also resulted in the highest alcohol content (5.82%) and significantly reduced organic acid levels but concurrently led to a slight decrease in some key aroma esters. However, sensory evaluation revealed that jujube wine produced from the chitosan-pretreated juice maintained a harmonious overall taste profile, with an overall score comparable to that of the pectinase reference group. In comparison, bentonite and gelatin showed moderate effectiveness, while diatomite performed poorly. Notably, although pectinase treatment yielded the lowest pectin content, it paradoxically resulted in the highest methanol levels, highlighting the critical mechanism of pectin degradation (rather than removal) promoting methanol formation. In conclusion, chitosan was recommended as an effective pre-fermentation treatment strategy for producing jujube wine with a significantly reduced methanol risk. This study provided a theoretical basis and technical reference for the safe, high-quality industrial production of jujube wine. Full article

Mucor is widely distributed in nature and extensively applied in industries, food, and other fields. Based on analyses of the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) and the large subunit (LSU) of the ribosomal RNA gene, RNA polymerase II largest subunit gene (RPB1), and their morphological characteristics, six new species of Mucor were identified. Mucor catenatus sp. nov. forms chlamydospores in chains. Mucor jujubinus sp. nov. is characterized by jujube-shaped columellae. Mucor macrosporangium sp. nov. produces larger sporangia. Mucor multiramosus sp. nov. features extensively branched sporangiophores. Mucor oligorhizus sp. nov. shows a rare rhizoid formation. Mucor tumidus sp. nov. usually develops swellings in sporangiophores. This study represents the twelfth contribution in a series exploring early-diverging fungal diversity in China and raises the number of accepted Mucor species to 60. Full article

Aiming at the problems of tree vigor decline and unstable fruit quality caused by soil impoverishment and easy nutrient loss in the Ziziphus jujuba Mill. ‘Huizao’ (Huizao) producing areas of southern Xinjiang, the application effect of bag-controlled slow-release fertilizer (BCSRF) in this region remains unclear. In this study, a field experiment was conducted with four fertilization concentration gradients, including CK (0 kg/ha), T1 (22 kg/ha), T2 (44 kg/ha), and T3 (66 kg/ha), to investigate the effects of BCSRF on soil nutrient dynamics and plant growth, as well as the fruit yield and quality of Huizao. The results showed that BCSRF could effectively maintain the supply levels of soil alkali-hydrolysable nitrogen, available phosphorus, and available potassium during key growth periods, among which the T3 treatment exhibited the most significant effect. This treatment not only significantly increased the yield per plant of Huizao by 39.34% compared with the control, but also markedly enhanced the contents of the endogenous substance, including soluble sugar and cyclic adenosine monophosphate. This study confirms that under the condition of sandy loam soil in southern Xinjiang, a single basal application of an appropriate amount of BCSRF can achieve continuous nutrient supply, simultaneously improve soil fertility and fruit quality, providing a theoretical basis and technical guidance for simplified and efficient fertilization in local jujube orchards. A semi-empirical lumped parameter model for the extraction process of traditional Chinese medicine based on thermal equilibrium was established in this work. In this model, the effect of heat dissipation was considered. Differential equations was solved using numerical methods. Key model parameters such as the overall heat transfer coefficient and heat dissipation coefficient were obtained by fitting measured data. In the laboratory scale, Ginkgo biloba leaves were used as the liquid-solid extraction object to systematically investigate the effects of liquid-to-solid ratio, extraction temperature, solvent ratio, and slice particle size on the temperature changes during the extraction process. The average determination coefficient (R2) of the model fitting was 0.9955, and the R2 value for the prediction group was 0.9950. In the laboratory scale, extraction experiments of Xiaochaihu Decoction were conducted, and the performance of the model was verified. Furthermore, the model was applied to the mixed decoction process of five medicinal materials (Bupleurum, Glycyrrhiza, Scutellaria, Codonopsis, and Jujube) in industrial-scale for the production of Xiaochaihu capsules. The temperature change curves of three extraction tanks were all fitting well. The fitting results indicated abnormal heat transfer performance in Tank No. 1, providing a prompt for equipment maintenance and process optimization for the enterprise. A feasible method for temperature calculation and abnormal identification in the industrial process of traditional Chinese medicine extraction was provided in this work. Full article

Fruit cracking in jujube is a major constraint on the sustainable development of the jujube industry. In this study, 60 mg L−1 of 6-Benzylaminopurine (6-BA) was foliar-sprayed at the early fruit stage. Fruit cracking incidence was recorded during the green and white fruit periods, and these observations were integrated with transcriptomic and metabolomic analyses to explore the potential mechanisms by which 6-BA influences fruit cracking. The results showed that the fruit cracking in the treatment groups was 53% and 18% of that in the control group during the green period and the white period, respectively. In jujube peel, catalase (CAT) activity was significantly increased in the treated peel during both periods. In the peel metabolites, compounds belonging to the cytokinin (CTK) category exhibited significant accumulation in both periods. Transcriptomic analysis showed that differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were enriched in pathways related to starch and sucrose metabolism, plant hormone signal transduction, and cellular polysaccharide metabolism. These findings suggest that 6-BA treatment may alleviate jujube fruit cracking by enhancing antioxidant capacity, modulating hormone homeostasis, and upregulating genes associated with carbohydrate and cell wall metabolism. Carpomya vesuviana (Diptera: Tephritidae), a significant invasive forestry pest of Zizyphus crops worldwide, has spread globally across jujube-growing regions, causing substantial yield losses and economic damage. In China, it is classified as both an imported and forestry quarantine pest. Existing risk assessments have primarily focused on the potential geographical distributions (PGDs) of C. vesuviana, but its economic impact on host plants is unknown. Therefore, we used an optimised MaxEnt model based on species distribution records and relevant environmental variables to predict the PGDs of C. vesuviana under current and future climate scenarios. Meanwhile, we used the @RISK stochastic model to assess the economic impact of this pest on the Chinese jujube industry under various scenarios. The results showed that the human influence index (HII), mean temperature of the wettest quarter (Bio8), temperature seasonality (Bio4), and precipitation during the driest month (Bio14) were the significant environmental variables affecting species distribution. Under the current climatic scenario, the total suitable area of C. vesuviana reached 2171.39 × 104 km2, which is mainly distributed in southern and western Asia, southern Europe, central North America, western Africa, and eastern South America. Potentially suitable habitats will increase and shift to the middle and high latitudes of the Northern Hemisphere under future climatic scenarios. Under the no-control scenario, C. vesuviana could cause losses of 15,687 million CNY to the jujube industry in China. However, control measures could have saved losses of 5047 million CNY. This study provides a theoretical basis for preventive monitoring and integrated management of C. vesuviana globally and helps reduce its economic impact on the jujube industry in China. Full article

Jujube (Ziziphus jujuba Mill.) is a nutritionally rich and economically significant fruit, highly valuable for its flavor, bioactive compounds, and therapeutic properties. However, it is highly perishable and has a short postharvest lifespan. This review aims to provide knowledge for preserving quality and improving postharvest storage by integrative strategies aimed at extending the shelf life of jujube. The literature was collected from recent peer-reviewed studies on postharvest physiology and handling technologies of jujube fruit. Key physiological factors, influencing postharvest deterioration such as water loss, softening, browning, and decay, are discussed, along with the underlying biochemical and enzymatic mechanisms driving quality decline. Conventional strategies such as cold storage, MAP, and CA effectively slow respiration, delay reddening, and extend storage up to 2–4 months, while emerging approaches such as ozone and cold plasma treatments reduce microbial decay and maintain antioxidant activity. Edible coatings like chitosan, aloe vera, and composites cut weight loss by 20–40%, and chemical regulators such as 1-MCP and calcium dips further delay ripening, preserve firmness, and enhance postharvest quality. Emphasis is placed on integrating innovative technologies with physiological insights to optimize storage conditions, control microbial contamination, and maintain nutritional integrity. The significance of this review lies in integrating physiological insights with innovative preservation methods, offering practical guidance for researchers, growers, and industry stakeholders to achieve sustainable, safe, and market-oriented solutions for jujube storage. In arid regions, water scarcity and soil potassium destruction are major constraints on the sustainable development of the jujube industry. In this regard, the use of crop models can compensate for time-consuming and costly field trials to screen for better irrigation regimes, but their predictive accuracy is often compromised by parameter uncertainty. To address this issue, we utilized data from a three-year (2022–2024) field trial (with irrigation at 50%, 75%, and 100% of evapotranspiration and potassium applications of 120, 180, and 240 kg/ha) to simulate the growth process of jujube trees in arid regions using the WOFOST model. In this study, parameter sensitivity analyses were conducted to determine that photosynthetic capacity maximization (Amax), the potassium nutrition index (Kstatus), the water stress factor (SWF), the water–potassium photosynthetic coefficient of synergy (α), and potassium partitioning weight coefficients (βi) were the important parameters affecting the simulated growth process of the crop. Path analysis using segmented structural equations also showed that water stress factor (SWF) and potassium nutrition index (Kstatus) indirectly controlled yield by significantly affecting photosynthesis (path coefficients: 0.72 and 0.75, respectively). The ability of the crop model to simulate the growth process and yield of jujube trees was improved by the introduction of water and potassium parameters (R2 = 0.94–0.96, NRMSE = 4.1–12.2%). The subsequent multi-objective optimization of yield and crop water productivity of dates under different combinations of water and potassium treatments under a bi-objective optimization model based on the NSGA-II algorithm showed that the optimal strategy was irrigation at 80% ETc combined with 300 kg/ha of potassium application. This management model ensures yield and maximizes crop water use efficiency (CWP), thus providing a scientific and efficient irrigation and fertilization regime for jujube trees in arid zones. Egg protein gels have relatively poor water-holding capacity, hardness, and freeze–thaw properties. Jujube juicing residue dietary fiber (JJRDF) is available, but it is rarely used in the food industry because of its poor hydration properties. Versions of JJRDF modified via cellulase and xylanase hydrolysis separately coupled with carboxymethylation (JJRDF-CXHC), phosphate crosslinking (JJRDF-CXHPC), and acetylation (JJRDF-CXHA) were prepared, and their effects on heat-induced and alkaline-induced egg protein gels (HA-EPGs) were studied. Smaller particle sizes and higher solubility, viscosity, expansion volume, and ability to retain water were observed in JJRDF-CXHC, JJRDF-CXHPC, and JJRDF-CXHA compared to JJRDF (p < 0.05). JJRDF-CXHC showed the highest viscosity (18.46 cP) and expansion volume (10.40 mL/g). Higher random coil and β-sheet contents resulted in an increase in pH, adhesiveness, hardness, and chewiness, and a decrease in the water-losing rate in freeze–thaw cycles, and gastric digestion was observed in the HA-EPGs as a consequence of adding JJRDF, JJRDF-CXHC, JJRDF-CXHPC, and JJRDF-CXHA at 3–5 g/100 g. Moreover, JJRDF-CXHC and JJRDF-CXHPC were better at improving the textural quality of the unmodified HA-EPG compared to JJRDF-CXHA and JJRDF (p < 0.05). Therefore, to improve egg protein gel quality, JJRDF modified with cellulase and xylanase hydrolysis separately coupled with carboxymethylation and crosslinking is a good choice. The long-term arid climate in Xinjiang poses a major challenge to sustainable jujube production. In this study, we systematically evaluated the impacts of deficit irrigation (DI) by comparing a full irrigation control (CK) with six DI treatments—mild DI (75% CK) and severe DI (50% CK) water deficits applied during either flowering + fruit setting or fruit enlargement stages. The key findings demonstrate that flowering + fruit setting DI effectively balances water conservation with productivity. Mild DI (75% CK) during flowering + fruit setting reduced irrigation by 72 mm while maintaining near-optimal photosynthesis (95% recovery post-rewatering) and significantly improving fruit quality (5.49–10.28% higher sugar content, 3.40–5.06% larger fruit volume), despite a moderate 4.22–11.36% yield reduction. In contrast, severe DI caused irreversible physiological stress (only 75% photosynthetic recovery), and fruit-enlargement-stage DI uniformly compromised both yield and fruit size. An economic analysis confirmed flowering + fruit setting mild DI as optimal, generating 17,139–20,550 RMB·ha−1 profit through enhanced water use efficiency (WUE) and premium-quality fruit production. PLS-PM validation revealed that targeted flowering + fruit setting water deficit suppresses vegetative overgrowth while optimizing source–sink relationships, achieving a 23–31% WUE improvement without sacrificing marketable yield. Thus, mild DI during flowering + fruit setting is a climate-smart irrigation strategy for Xinjiang’s jujube industry, resolving water scarcity challenges with economic viability. Full article

Jujube (Ziziphus jujuba Mill.) is one of the three traditional woody crop species in China, where it originated from the middle and lower reaches of the Yellow River. Jujube is considered one of the oldest cultivated fruit trees species in the world, as its utilization can be traced back to more than 7000 years ago. The jujube has important nutritional, economic, and ecological values, hence it is well received by both planters and consumers. At present, jujube cultivation has spread to more than 48 countries and provides a pathway for Chinese farmers to produce a lucrative cash crop. Jujube is regarded as a superfruit of the future due to its excellent nutritional profile. Social progress and economic shifts leading to the improvement of living standards influence the value of jujube to consumers, who have gradually shifted toward functional foods, while at the same time, consumer desires and environmental pressures change the breeding goals for new jujube varieties. In this review, we summarize the origin, classification, and historical, as well as modern, uses of jujube. We also provide some advice on the establishment of breeding objectives in this new period of jujube development. This review aims to provide useful references for researchers new to jujube, to guide shareholders in the jujube industry, and to formulate breeding objectives for the modern development of elite jujube cultivars. The serious impact of Alternaria alternata on jujube black spot disease has seriously affected the quality and yield of jujube, constraining the sustainable development of the jujube industry. The purpose of this study was to isolate and screen highly effective biocontrol strains of jujube black spot disease from jujube rhizosphere soil. Thirty-three soil samples were collected from four regions in southern Xinjiang. The strains with antagonistic effects were isolated and screened by the dilution spread method and plate confrontation method and identified by morphological, physiological, and biochemical characteristics, as well as 16S rDNA, gyrB, and rpoB gene sequences. Indoor and field efficacy experiments were conducted to determine their biocontrol effect. A total of 110 strains with antibacterial activity were selected, and one strain, Bacillus velezensis 26-8, with a stable antagonistic effect was further tested. Biological characteristic experiments showed that strain 26-8 could grow at NaCl concentrations of 0.5–10% and pH 4.0–9.0. The biocontrol experiment results showed that Bacillus velezensis 26-8 could achieve an 89.83% control effect against black spot disease. In conclusion, strain 26-8 has good salt and alkali tolerance, exerts a good control effect on jujube black spot disease, and is worthy of further study. Full article

Jujube (Ziziphus jujuba Mill.) makes up a traditional characteristic industry with ecological significance in the Lüliang Mountain of middle reaches of the Yellow River (LMMRYR). However, low economic efficiency has reduced local farm households’ willingness to continue jujube cultivation, threatening the sustainable maintenance and development of jujube forests and the ecological environment. In response, Lüliang City implemented a technological innovation program, that is, the Jujube Forest High Grafting and Optimization Program (JFHGOP), in 2018. Based on survey data from 302 local farm households, an empirical analysis using propensity score matching and ordinary least squares methods revealed that the program significantly enhanced the economic, ecological, and social benefits for participating farm households, improving their overall welfare. Robustness tests confirmed these findings, and a heterogeneity analysis showed varied impacts across different dimensions. The program improved welfare through government support and cooperatives’ assistance. To further promote green development and farm households’ welfare, recommendations include advancing forestry innovation technology, supporting small farm households with policy, capital, and technology, optimizing subsidy mechanisms, supporting new business entities, and promoting cooperation and benefit-sharing among stakeholders.
